ell, generally when I am writing my column I consider plenty of positive local stories that are featured and this week was no exception.

However, our page 3 story highlights an event that many in our community have been angered and appalled by.

On Thursday night Pioneer Park (located at the entry to Landsborough from Steve Irwin Way) was the victim of thieves who stole twenty four custom made fence panels, as well as a pedestrian gate and a double maintenance gate.

It is hard to believe that someone from our community would do this (let’s hope it wasn’t a local). Pioneer Park is one of the most well used community assets we have; it is a wonderful place for families and friends to come and have birthday parties, celebrations and just for the kids to run around and enjoy the playground.

To undertake a robbery of this nature, under the cover of darkness, you would have to think that somebody saw or knows something about the incident.

Rusty, Jack and artist Jane Nicol were accompanied by special guest Major Graham Palmer, Welfare Officer with the Australian Department of Defence, for the launch.

As it seems with much of Jane’s story, one thing leads to another and when having her studio plastered Jane discovered her plasterer (a local) happened to be the owner of a thoroughbred exrace horse (described as the slowest race horse in history) who participates in a number of light horse parades at different events.

Jane suggested she paint the plasterer in uniform on his beautiful horse and, as a laid back laconic Aussie, the plasterer, with his equally laid back horse, agreed. The painting, ‘Rusty and Jack’, is the result of this meeting of minds and interests.

Originally hailing from Scotland, Jane studied sculpture and ceramics as a teenager, and became an award-winning equestrian as well as a trauma psychotherapist whose passion was, and continues to be, helping people resolve and heal trauma.

Jane herself suffered a brain injury after which, as a means of healing, she began to paint – a pursuit she had not previously undertaken.

Jane’s original passion for healing people has not waned and, although she no longer operates as a psychotherapist, her desire to help and support people who have suffered trauma and their families has not diminished.

A percentage of monies from the sale of the limited edition prints of her work ‘Rusty and Jack’ will be donated to ‘Wounded Heroes’, a not for profit organisation that offers support to military service people suffering from injuries sustained during military service, as well as the families who no longer have the person they loved.

Jane has been working with Joanne Howard, from Maleny Art Direct, where the original painting and reproductions will be on display and available for sale. She is hoping that around $60,000.00 can be raised and donated to ‘Wounded Heroes’.

Poppies serve as reminder Anyone driving through Mooloolah last Friday couldn’t help but be reminded that it was Remembrance Day, as the garden beds outside of Kennys@Mooloolah had been decorated with hundreds of crocheted poppies.

The creative talent behind the work is Mooloolah local Lyn Peck who set up the Mooloolah Valley Poppy Creators group following Anzac Day. Lyn established the group to make the poppies for display in Mooloolah to honour those servicemen and women who have fought across all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations over the last 100 years.

Lyn and her husband Lindsay are both retired Navy personnel who each served for 20 years.

Lyn was a Warrant Officer and Lindsay served on both ships and 10 years in submarines.

Their backgrounds have also given Lyn the opportunities to include personal mementos from their own uniforms, with buttons and badges incorporated into some of the poppies.

The work that is featured on the front page was displayed in the front window of Kennys@ Mooloolah. It was clearly a labour of love, and Lyn was really appreciative of local business owner Tracey Hallink from Coast Imagewear generously donating her time to embroider that piece.

At this stage Lyn plans to continue creating the poppies until Remembrance Day 2018 and is

Despite hot and steamy conditions, eighty plus members of the public attended the recent Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch Remembrance Day Service under the shade of the trees at Rotary Park

hoping to encourage other locals to join in to be able keep growing the display.

The group meet on the first Tuesday of each month at Kennys@Mooloolah Café at 9.30am and the third Thursday of the month at 1.30pm; Lyn would also like to thank Kenny for his support.

If you would like to make the poppies without coming along to the group that is fine too. Lyn explained that the ladies from the Mooloolah Gardens Retirement Village have been working on their own to create poppies that are part of the nearly 700 currently in the display.

Beerwah Council depot nears completion Contributing to the changing face of Beerwah is the plan to relocate the Sunshine Coast Council works depot from Landsborough to the new site on Roys Road at Beerwah.

Construction of the new depot, located behind the Beerwah Rural Fire Brigade shed, has been progressing for a number of months, and Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski says that the facility is nearing completion.

“Council's Project Delivery team have told me that all work budgeted for this year is nearly finished and we expect staff from the Landsborough Depot will be relocating to the new depot in December,” Cr Baberowski said.

“The new and old are being beautifully blended with this sensitive modern design reflecting the rich history of timber in our region while protecting the original arboretum, a garden featuring many rare and imported trees.

“We’ve paid tribute to the old timber buildings by retaining two of the character-filled rooflines and cladding new and refurbished sheds in manufactured weatherboard with timber trims.

“An old forestry truck shed has been retained and the large seed-drying shed has been refurbished to serve as the works shed.

“Nineteen local companies were engaged as subcontractors and suppliers for the project.

“Thanks to their efforts in meeting construction schedules, the depot will be up and running in December, ready for operations in the new year.”

Public meeting set for Beerburrum BEERWAH to Nambour Rail Upgrade Project DENTURE CLINIC The State MPs for Glass House and Caloundra will host a public meeting next month regarding the Queensland Government’s proposed Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade Project and its impact on hinterland residents and businesses.

The meeting will be held on Tuesday, December 13 at the Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall, 4 Old Landsborough Road, Landsborough from 12 noon to 2.00pm.

Andrew Powell MP and Mark McArdle MP have organised the meeting in response to the many residents who raised concerns with them regarding little information provided at community consultation sessions and direct to residents.

“What we do know is there is the possibility of the Caloundra Street level crossing in Landsborough being closed with impacts on businesses in Landsborough and loss of value to land holders,” Mr McArdle said.

“Many people are contacting my office saying they’ve spoken to project officers who have said nothing will happen, but then some residents are receiving property resumption notices.

“We are encouraging anyone who would like to express their views on the project to attend our meeting and provide direct feedback which we will then take to the State Government.”

Shadow Minister for Transport and Main Roads and Shadow Minister for Local Government Andrew Powell said everyone was welcome to attend.

Conondale Memorial Recreation Park 15-year vision Enhanced public open space and the Elaman Creek recreation area are two of the wins outlined in the Conondale Memorial Recreation Park Master Plan 2016-2031 endorsed by Sunshine Coast Council on November 10.

Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay said extensive community feedback had informed the design and recommendations of the master plan.

The key recommendations include: • Enhanced recreational opportunities, including access, shelter and seating, adjacent to Elaman Creek to support passive community use; • Improved community access to the park and creek area; • Improved road access to the site; • Inclusion of signage to acknowledge the site’s historical significance; • Improved wayfinding throughout the site; • The retention of the Sunshine Coast Motorcycle Club as a tenant of the site.

“We have incorporated feedback from the final consultation phase which includes the realignment of the western internal access road to minimise disturbance over the previous race track positioning.

“The master plan also provides opportunities for council and the Conondale community to consult regarding the final location of a proposed new Anzac memorial.

“It is important to note the implementation of the master plan will require external funding assistance as the recommendations are beyond the capacity of council to fund in its own right.

“The adoption of the master plan provides relevant stakeholders, community groups and council with a strategic direction to implement improvements in a clear and focused way, and provides a foundation for grant applications and facility planning.”

Council will apply to the State Government for the Sunshine Coast Motorcycle Club to be granted a 30-year lease at the park.

“Council has recognised the important role that the SCMC plays in the sporting landscape on the Sunshine Coast,” Cr McKay said.

“They are a hugely successful and well managed club who provide a great service for people in the local community and beyond.

“A 30-year lease will allow the club to plan with certainty and play a lead role in implementing, and in some cases funding, a number of the actions identified in the master plan.”

New initiative for Morris House Neighbourhood Centre

Morris House Neighbourhood Centre at Landsborough is proposing to start a new program which will involve a small group of volunteers who will do home visits to people who, for various reasons, are confined to their homes. These visits will apply to single people or couples.

There are more than a thousand elderly and / or physically challenged people receiving some sort of assistance (for example, Meals on Wheels) in the Glasshouse Country area, so we believe a service that provides visits to those people unable to ‘get out and about’ will be beneficial to their wellbeing.

The volunteers we are looking for in providing this outreach service should be outgoing, have good communication skills, have compassion and the desire to provide conversation and friendship, to brighten the lives of the lonely.

Glass House Mountains local Stacey O'Brien is very excited to announce that she is about to launch her second inspirational book, ‘The Healer's Workbook’.

Stacey said the book, which gives insights into transforming grief into healing and offers self care practices to the health industries, is a long awaited gift to midwives and nurses who care for us all at our toughest times.

Milestone moment recognised Glasshouse Country Care celebrated their 20 year anniversary at their property on Peachester Road, and many staff, volunteers and clients have contributed to the wonderful organisation it is today.

The vision of Alan Mountain and Annette James back in 1996, and the hard work of many others to create an organisation that would help and assist both our older residents and people with

disabilities, has made such a difference to the lives of many during these past two decades.

There were plenty of special guests on hand to celebrate on Saturday, including the Sunshine Coast Mayor and representatives from each level of government. Mayor Mark Jamieson also presented a plaque to the Chair of the Management Committee, recognising the dedication of the organisation.

Share the joy of Christmas For 25 years UnitingCare and Target have partnered to brighten the lives of thousands of Australians through their annual Christmas Appeal.

One in eight Australians live in poverty and many of these people turn to UnitingCare to put food on the table, buy gifts for their children and provide temporary accommodation over Christmas.

This year UnitingCare and Target are again calling on shoppers to give generously by purchasing gift tags for $1.00 or giving an unwrapped gift for local families in need this Christmas.

A few dollars could help women and children fleeing domestic violence, people seeking emergency relief or children in foster care.

UnitingCare and Target are asking shoppers to donate an unwrapped gift by dropping it off at their local Target Christmas tree at the front of store.

A small gift will help assist thousands of families who struggle to celebrate Christmas, something many of us take for granted.

Local Uniting Church Pastor Margaret Nieth says 2016 has been a really tough year for families facing issues of unemployment and increasing living costs.

“Fortunately we have so many generous people in our community and we're relying on them to dig deep, show compassion and support our appeal this Christmas,” Margaret said.

The UnitingCare and Target Christmas Appeal launched in all Target stores across the country on November 3 and runs through to December 24. Shoppers are encouraged to drop off unwrapped gifts under the Target Christmas tree at the front of any Target store or purchase a $1.00 bauble gift tag at the checkout. All proceeds will be donated to the UnitingCare Christmas Appeal.

‘Woodies’ Christmas Santa Shop On Saturday and Sunday, December 3 and 4, the Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild present their annual ‘Woodies’ Christmas Santa shop at St Mary Hall, Village Green, Montville. It’s on from 9.00am to 8.15pm on the Saturday and from 9.00am to 3.30pm on the Sunday.

In the lead up to Christmas, retailers from Beerwah Village and Beerwah Marketplace are set to launch a fantastic promotion that will reward their customers for shopping locally.

From Monday, November 21, customers can take their $10.00 shopping docket from any retailer from both Centres to the dedicated promotion host/hostess who will be located front of the IGA. Customers will then be given a ‘promotional instant scratch it ticket’ and can win Reegan from Beerwah Cosmetics either a $10.00 or $20.00 Beerwah and Tracie from Shoes@Beerwah Money Voucher. Christmas Hampers for locals in need

Since establishing itself earlier this year, the community-minded members of the ‘Glasshouse Country Pay it Forward Group’ have worked tirelessly to help others in the local area.

The idea behind the group is to coordinate acts of community kindness in the belief that one good turn deserves another – hence the term ‘pay it forward’.

Now the group is busy coordinating funds and collecting donations to assist in their Christmas Hamper program for local neighbours in need, and they are calling for local business and individuals to help.

Group co-organiser Lani Mercer said that with one in eight families struggling, the group really wants to help ease the burden – especially at Christmas time.

“It would be wonderful if the businesses could help out,” Lani said. “Often people in need don’t put their hand up and it’d be great if we could help them in what is often a stressful time of year.”

To help raise funds Craig and Lani Mercer are hosting a special fundraising event titled ‘Opera by the Lagoon’ on Saturday, December 17 from 5.00pm.

The evening will feature the classically trained artist Louise Winton singing Christmas favourites, classical and light opera pieces.

Tickets are $20.00 (plus small booking fee) and are available via www.eventbrite.com.au or via the Glasshouse Country Pay It Forward Group Facebook event page.

Let’s light up the neighbourhood!

By Sonia Clark Christmas lights are always a lovely way to mark the festive season and the simple act of putting up a few lights (or more!) can bring festive joy to both young and old.

Putting up festive season lights can also be a fantastic community-building activity and a lovely way to bring neighbourhoods together.

One local man who is a ‘bit of an expert’ when it comes to awesome Christmas lights displays is Kevin Taylor who for seven years decked out his Pacific Place, Beerwah home with an increasingly impressive selection of lights.

For Kevin and his family, it started off when the neighbours on either side put up lights and so, being in the middle of two lit up residences, Kevin was inspired to put something up. He started with just one light and a 50cm-high Santa Claus which he would turn on and off whenever someone went past ! But by the end, this annual project developed into a spectacular display which saw the property lit up with thousands of lights. Over the years, more neighbours joined in until virtually the entire street was lit up during Christmas time.

“It doesn’t cost much money to put up a couple of lights and, for just a few dollars each, the whole street can get involved. It gives a great community feel to any neighbourhood and everyone loves seeing the streets lit up,” Kevin said.

Over seven years, Kevin developed the Christmas lighting into an annual project that saw the property eventually lit up with thousands of lights for four weeks at the end of the year – Kevin even dedicated himself to dressing up as Santa every night during the period to add to the experience.

Though you may not wish to put on such a huge display, why not consider getting together with neighbours in your street and making it a community activity?

Celebrating the beard

By Lea Parkes For many months now the dedicated Maleny Commerce’s Christmas Festival Committee has been working on creating another wonderful event, to be held in Maple Street on Friday, December 9, from 6.00pm.

For many of us our memories of Christmas include Santa and his iconic beard, and while Santa is still busy at the North Pole getting ready for the big event on December 25, the committee has decided to celebrate ‘the beard’.

And while the committee knew that out in the community there are plenty of hard-core, long-term bearded blokes sporting Santa Claus style beards, they were keen to make an inclusive event that would encourage others to be involved.

There are a number of categories including fake beard, (for those fellas that just can’t grow their own) decorated / most creative, longest, best kempt, and just a tash.

They are asking contestants for $5.00 to enter, and for those who would like to vote it is only a gold coin for each vote, with the funds raised going to the Maleny Hospital Auxiliary.

You Said It Concern about water legislation

Our State is facing a decision that can have serious far reaching consequences for rural Queensland in particular.

The Water Bill currently facing State Parliament highlights the terrifying conduct by the LNP on the very crucial issue of water access.

What have current LNP MPs from our region got to say for themselves on this vital matter?

Do local MPs like Fiona Simpson or our former Environment Minister Andrew Powell really believe that it is okay for mining companies to have unrestricted access to Queensland's water resources regardless of the potential impact on adjacent landowners, farmers, graziers, nearby towns?

If not, how can MP Elmes, MP Simpson, MP Powell and the rest of their gang possibly justify voting in favour of granting unrestricted access to mining companies?

Where are the Nationals to be found when there is so much at stake for Queensland farmers and graziers?

Folks, forget the threats of terrorism or job losses, if our state allows countless mining companies unrestricted access to our water resources, you can say goodbye to most life as we know it west from the coast.

Allowing unrestricted access to water to these companies will condemn most of the population in Queensland’s interior to a slow, costly and painful decline with no hope of recovery.

Come on LNP, explain yourselves!

I have recently started attending a church at Beerwah.

Sunday, 6 November, was my second attendance at this parish.

I was disturbed by the inclusion of Rolf Harris being played, singing two little boys, supported by a video which included children.

My understanding of the ascension into heaven was that you have to adhere to the laws of the land, admit your guilt, pay your penance, ask for forgiveness and then you'll be judged at the gates of St Peter.

Rolf Harris has done none of these (never admitted guilt or apologised to his victims). Why

Ageism a red herring

Richard Giles (GC&M News, 9 November) accuses me of “ageism”, which is amusing considering I am a retired oldie myself!

Calling me an ageist is a red herring to divert attention away from the point I was making, which is simply that we cannot look to opinions that have not passed through the process of peer review and subsequent publication in a scientific journal.

The world is replete in polemics, unpublished and lacking peer review, written by academics working outside their fields.

I could point to the retired (and therefore often out-of-touch) scientists who have self-published arguments claiming that global warming does not exist.

They are utterly wrong, yet many of them have exemplary qualifications and long lists of published papers to their names. How do we know not to take them seriously? The answer lies in what I alluded to above: their papers “proving” that man-made global warming does not exist are never published because they cannot get through the peer review process.

And it does not matter how many references a paper has; if it is unpublished, it does indeed, as I have stated, "carry no weight". Ask any scientist and they will confirm what I am telling you.

Mulch vandalism

Recently I picked up a trailer load of garden mulch from Council’s Recycle Centre in Beerwah.

When I was unloading it at home, I was disgusted to find three bits of steel in the mulch. To be kind to those who don't take the trouble to ensure that there are no foreign objects in the garden waste they are delivering to be mulched, they could be described as just lazy or careless. To me they are vandals who by their actions are no better than people who throw rubbish out of their cars. Leaving household rubbish in with garden waste to be mulched (particularly steel or metal) can cause major damage to the mulching machinery. We as rate payers eventually bear the cost. I would like to see high penalties imposed on people caught in the act.

Money Smart states that if you sign on as some ones guarantor your are responsible for all of their mortgage repayments – including fees, charges and interest – in the event that they are unable or unwilling to pay a guarantor will share the burden of your home loan with you.

Your guarantor will have no rights to your home or anything else you purchase with your home loan. Basically the generous person who guarantees your loan will benefit in no way except for whatever satisfaction they get from helping you into a home. Would anyone you know do that for you?

This is not a decision to be entered into lightly by either party. When asking your parents to guarantee your loan the

following points should be considered.

•If you can’t pay your loan, they will have to or if unable to may need to sell the property they have offered as security is your guarantor comfortable with this?

•If they provide an asset as security for your loan, they may not be able to use it to secure a loan for themselves.

•If both you and the guarantor fail to make mortgage repayments your credit scores could both be damaged.

•Is your relationship solid enough to survive if something goes wrong?

Your guarantor will have no rights to your home or anything else you purchase with your home loan. To minimise the risk to both you and your guarantor it’s essential that you figure out how

much you can afford, then set your loan repayments well within your means.

It’s also essential that your guarantor knows exactly what they’re getting into, what the agreement means and how much they must pay if something changes and you can’t make mortgage repayments.

School News All safe and sound at Kindy

Fire trucks and police cars have been visiting the Beerwah Kindy for the past few weeks, but there hasn’t been an emergency in sight.

First responders from the Beerwah Fire Brigade and the Police Dog Squad visited excited children in both Beerwah Kindy groups to connect with them and reinforce the importance of knowing how to call 000 in an emergency.

Captain Luke Chapman led a conversation about fires and the children showed the impressed firefighters their fire drill before it was time to get wet, with the children pairing up to squirt water from the fire hose.

Senior Constable Chadd Christie visited with police dog-in-training Edge to talk about road safety and what the police do to help people in the community.

Beerwah Kindy co-director Rebecca Mackintosh said the visits were even more special because both Cpt Chapman and Snr Cnst Christie had personal connections to the kindy.

“Captain Chapman has had one child attend Beerwah Kindy and another daughter enrolled for next year and Snr Cnst Christie has had two children attend Beerwah Kindy and his youngest daughter is currently enrolled,” she said.

“It made the annual visits even more wonderful to have some of our past and present Kindy families represent these important community services this year.”

Mindfulness moments

Contributed by Roz Barbour Students at Elimbah State School have been learning that having a calm and present state of mind is a prerequisite for students to be psychologically and physiologically ready for learning.

Mindfulness is increasingly proving to be a great way to achieve this state, and work towards the goals of stress reduction, self-regulation, and better ability to focus and sustain attention necessary for learning.

Different classes have been incorporating different techniques into their daily classroom activities, Year 6s have been practising deep belly breathing for focus, calm and self-regulation – a helpful tool for their toolbox in a day of learning.

In Year 3 Mr Reedy’s classroom take a few minutes to allow their muscles to be gently stretched and oxygenated by their slow deep breathing, as a method to focus before a writing task, or transitioning into the classroom after a break.

Last week 3C looked at their ‘inner weather’. If we are feeling happy, it can feel like a sunny day, or maybe a shower has just passed and rainbows are about.

Yoga can also make wonderful use of children’s imaginations and can often serve as tie-in, such as for a writing assignment, maths, social skills or the arts.

Mrs Leyland’s Year 1 class are learning ‘snorkel breathing’ and downward facing dog, tabletop, and other pretzel-twisting yoga moves. It has been shown that, with as little as five minutes a day, three times a week, these moves can have immediate and lasting impact on students by lessening anxiety, improving motor skills, reinforcing natural kinetic learning, and increasing language reception.

‘SmilingMind’ is a mindfulness program that aims to build happier, healthier and more compassionate people.

This mindfulness program is designed to assist students to focus, and deal with anxiety and the challenges of daily life. Seven to 10 minutes, three to four times a week is all that is required to master this skill of “calm”.

Peachester School Camp

Contributed by Jessie Poole and Year 5/6 class Recently year 4, 5 and 6s from Peachester State School went to Currimundi for our annual camp.

Activities included body boarding, circus skills, team challenges and a mini Olympics.

We also completed an Alpine rescue where you work as a team to cover an obstacle course.

We tested our nerves and gave our adrenalin a boost not just with vertical climbing (10 metres straight up on different apparatus) but also on the Giant Swing. You are raised up to 20 metres from the ground by your team and you release a cord, like parachuting, and swing like a pendulum.

Caving was our last activity; even though it was man-made it seemed realistic.

The Sunshine Coast Recreation Centre is also open for weekend family bookings.

Beerburrum celebrates 100 years

by Tina Davidson On Sunday, November 6 the Beerburrum State School took part in a community day held at the local hall to celebrate 100 years of settlement in Beerburrum.

Students marched proudly in their school uniforms behind three army Light Horses to lead a parade along local streets to the School of Arts Hall.

The first special event was the unveiling of a memorial plaque on the front lawn of the hall grounds followed by a photo shoot with descendants of the original settlers living in the area before 1939.

The large crowd was entertained by the sweet voices of our school's junior choir led by music teacher Ian Williams. Many guests commented on the high level of confidence shown by the children.

Ms Francis, Mrs Davidson and Mrs Roberts manned a stall on the day to advertise the upcoming centenary of our school in 2018.

The staff were delighted to meet many past students and hear of their wonderful experiences at Beerburrum State School. A huge thank you must go out to the students and families from our school community who gave up their time to participate in the march or to sing in the choir.

Hats off to these students for being great ambassadors for Beerburrum State School within the wider community.

It is humbling to see children showing so much pride in our school's history. It is students such as these who will lead the way with preparations for our own school centenary.

For the first time in twenty years, a new biological rabbit control virus – known as RHDV1 K5 – will be trialled in 2017 at more than 600 sites across Australia in an effort to significantly reduce wild rabbit populations and their negative impact on agricultural production and native ecosystems.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources Barnaby Joyce said community organisations, Landcare groups and government land managers will be participating in the national rollout of the virus as part of the Coalition Government’s $1.2 million commitment to assist with the research and development of new rabbit control methods.

“Australia has a good track record when it comes to the biological control of rabbits,” Minister Joyce said.

“When we first released rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus (or RCD) in 1995, populations had multiplied to around 600 million, and we managed to reduce this by 98% in arid areas.

“It gave the environment time to regenerate and our farmers a fighting chance to keep rabbits at bay using traditional pest management techniques like baiting and traps."

RHDV1 K5 is a naturally occurring Korean variant of the rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus (RCD) currently found in Australia.

RHDV1 K5 is estimated to have a conservative knockdown average between 10 and 15% of the wild rabbit population in Australia, and up to 40% in cool-wet areas.

A vaccine to protect domestic rabbits against RHDV1 has been available in Australia since 1996 and studies demonstrate effective protection against the RHDV1 K5 variant. For more details about the RHD-Boost project, visit www.healthierlandscapes.org.au

I went for a walk in the bush the other day and couldn’t help but feel sorry, but the dry is not a new phenomenon. This time of the year is dry, some years more than others. What is amazing is to see the mechanisms the bush uses to cope; many trees lose their leaves, leaves droop, leaves curl and some plants die above the ground. These are all practices designed to reduce transpiration, the loss of moisture through the external parts of the plant.

Consequently, an otherwise dense bush becomes quite see through. We can see houses and cars travelling along our nearest road that are normally well hidden. The first time I witnessed a severe dry spell I was concerned that so much of the bush would die but, to my relief, it didn’t. I was surprised at just how quickly it responded and thickened up with new growth.

Look on the bright side, there’s a lovely new, thick layer of leaf mulch in the bush, weed growth has slowed, reducing the maintenance of revegetation areas, and trees affected

by Myrtle Rust which thrive on humidity, are enjoying the reprieve.

So, it’s not all doom and gloom!

Car cricket This game is suitable for all ages but younger children may need help adding up.

Each person in the car takes a turn batting. To score, you add up the value of the vehicles passing in the opposite direction. Scores are: Cars = 1 run Cars with a trailer = 2 runs Bus or truck = 4 runs (a boundary) Semi-trailer = 6 runs The batter continues to score until a red car passes, in which case they are out. The next batter takes the crease. The rules are very flexible and it’s lots of fun especially when everyone gets involved looking ahead for red cars.

If you want to use a different scoring, you could try: car 1 run, ute 2, truck 3, caravan 4, bus 6 and motorbike OUT! Wheel of Fortune Distribute the numbers 1 to 10 to the occupants of the car, and these numbers are then written in chalk on a tyre, at spaced intervals.

Living Historic Maleny house to undergo development

Revamped day-use area opens at Mapleton National Park

The Maleny Lodge and Guest House on Maple Street is about to undergo some changes.

A development application has been lodged with Sunshine Coast Council to expand the Maple Street guest accommodation options of the bed and breakfast by constructing three two-bedroom units and a one-bedroom unit.

To provide the changes, the development application identifies that some built elements, which are not part of the original house, and a pool will be demolished.

According to the planning report, the heritage integrity of the Lodge will be maintained and enhanced by “the demolition of the post-war additions at the rear of the property; the maintenance of key landscape elements and the enhancement of the existing garden, landscape treatment and visual presentation from Maple Street; and the upgrade and enhancement of the entry statement, together with a sensitively designed enclosure to accommodate a genuine circa early 1900s Abbot Buggy that is a legacy of the Maleny ambience and heritage.”

According to heritage records, the original building was constructed for Alfred Cooke in 1909 by locals Harry Bate and Samuel Sallaway and given the name ‘Rosedale’.

Cooke, the so-called ‘father of Maleny’, who, amongst other things, had a family of nine children, owned a dairy farm at Witta and was the local publican and auctioneer for a time.

The house was converted into a guest house in the 1930s and run by Judi Herbert for many years until the early 1990s.

Council’s heritage register notes that the house is significant as an example of an early 20th century house in Maleny.

Renowned heritage architect Roger Todd compiled a Heritage Impact Report for the development application, in which he identifies that, as one of the early few buildings shown from a 1914 photo, the house was a substantial residence at the time.

Roger explained that the design is a step beyond the typical four-room cottages of the time, and it could be compared to ‘Fairview’, built in 1908 by the Pattemore family, although ‘Fairview’ lacks the modern styling and decorative elements of ‘Rosedale’.

He states that the opulence of ‘Rosedale’ is confirmed by its planning around a long hall leading to the formal living room complete with rich timber detailing and Art Nouveau / Federation styling. These include leadlighted doors and divider arch in the main room.

Roger concludes that the proposed additional residences will make the place more sustainable as a business, and conservation philosophy acknowledges that maintenance of the usefulness of a place is essential for survival.

“The sections required to be removed are later additions to the original house as seen in 1914,” he writes.

“The incorporation of a driveway and rationalisation of the bin area will impact on the streetscape and will need to be handled sensitively. New structures should be clearly modern so as not to be interpreted as heritage elements.

“As an example, Cooke Park and surrounds contains both heritage replica structures as well as modern shelters. The modern shelters are stylish and add to the streetscape, whereas the replica structure confuses the story and devalues genuine heritage in the area.”

Mapleton National Park in the Sunshine Coast hinterland has benefited from a $250,000 revamp of the day-use area and surrounds by Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) to improve visitor experiences.

National Parks Minister Dr Steven Miles said the popular area now had a more open, grassy environment, a separate carpark, new trail networks, new picnic tables and better signage.

“Extensive works to develop the park’s infrastructure show the Government’s commitment to meeting local recreational demands,” Dr Miles said.

“For Mapleton National Park this means catering to the most popular pastimes of horseback riding, mountain biking and trailbike riding on shared trails, as well as picnicking and bushwalking.

“There are now dedicated horse-riding facilities including a new, separate carpark for horse floats. Horse riding in Mapleton is an important community activity with a strong history.

“Dedicated trailbike riding facilities include a new, separate carpark for easier access to the Gheerulla Trail Bike Circuit.

“For the picnic lovers, there has been a complete revamp of the park’s dayuse area with the picnic area redesigned for a more peaceful setting. QPWS has improved the access to toilet facilities for people with disabilities, as well as upgrading barbecues and picnic tables.

“Regular visitors will be pleased to see the extensive trail network, with 23km of shared-use trail for walking, horse-riding and mountain-bike riding, and an added 9.5km of low-grade mountain-bike track between the day use area and Point Glorious,” Dr Miles said.

The works have been underway for the past two years and were finalised in July, 2016.

The 10,064 hectare national park near the town of Mapleton features mountain scenery, numerous creeks, small waterfalls, rocky outcrops with expansive views, and diverse forests — rainforest, tall open blackbutt forest, scribbly gum forest, piccabeen palm groves, vine forest and shrubby woodland.

Visitor Information Centre Update

By Bev Dooley In recent weeks the Visit Sunshine Coast Volunteers have undertaken some wonderful walks and visited several local businesses to update our knowledge.

The Information Centre also hosts morning sessions every three months, and the last one involved National Parks and Wildlife officers updating us on the new lookout at Mapleton Falls. This inspired us to go and visit and experience it first-hand. It is probably one of the best views in the hinterland, absolutely stunning and so easy to get to that almost everyone can see it. At the same point is the Wompoo Circuit, a short but very pretty walk through rainforest. It only takes about 40 minutes and is an easy way to get out and about. Follow up with a lovely coffee in Mapleton and you have a great day out.

At the same morning session we were advised of Tibrogargan being opened again. It seems such a long time that we have been advising visitors that they cannot walk this magnificent area of the Glass House Mountains. We really do have so many international visitors that are keen to climb, having read about it in various publications on their travels.

Chris Johnson - Glasshouse Country Baptist Church When someone becomes a Christian they start to become a follower of Jesus. And one of the questions a follower of Jesus should be asking is, “how do I follow Jesus in whatever?”, but particularly in regards to my work, my marriage, my kids, my family and my relationships.

Jesus encourages us to love one another with Him as our role model.

So how did Jesus love? In Matthew’s account of the life of Jesus, he quotes Jesus as saying “the son of man (that’s Jesus’s favourite name he gives himself) came to seek and save the lost.”

In another part of his record Matthew records how Jesus said “the Son of man did not come to be served but to serve.”

In other words came the sort of love Jesus loved with – that is, it was not about him it was about us!

I suspect, if we are honest with ourselves, we love people for very selfish reasons. That’s why we say things like; “I love you because you make me happy or you make me feel good, or I

can be myself with you.”- Selfish reasons. Jesus loved us for our sake.

When we learn to love like Jesus loves we will start saying something like "I want to love you so that your life will be better."

And with that attitude our lives change, as does the lives of the people around us. Now, instead of making things about me and what I want, now it’s about the other person and about making them happy.

Jesus love is consistent. He loves us, not for His benefit but for ours. Jesus asks us to be His followers not to make Him feel good but because he knows it’s for our benefit. Isn’t it time you became a follower of Jesus?

Peachester District Horticultural Society

Patricia Bradford (Publicity Officer) President Coral Beutel welcomed two guest speakers to the October meeting, Dorothy and Ian Robb.

Dorothy showed off a selection of projected images of the creation and progress of the rainforest garden at the Peachester State School. All of the students, with help and support of parents and community members, are involved with the garden. Representatives from the Gubbi Gubbi Group were involved with choosing local native plants used for food and medicine to create the Aboriginal food forest walk section. Dorothy also explained how the Stephanie Alexander vegetable garden is progressing.

Ian Robb, General Manager of Verterra Ecological Engineering, spoke about a few of the projects the company is involved with in land management solutions, such as rehabilitation and regeneration of degraded land, old mining sites and waste water management – and that is just a small sample of the large number of projects they are involved in. If you Google Verterra Ecological Engineering, the number of other projects covered is quite amazing.

Coral then thanked Dorothy and Ian for their very interesting and informative talks.

Results of the competition for September: First, Pam Innes, 16 points; Tie Second, Margaret Ferris and Coral Beutel, 12 points.

After the meeting, most of the members enjoyed a stroll through the rainforest walk. We were shown the thriving vegetable garden and a quick peek into the kitchen where students learn how to cook their produce and cleaning.

The rainforest area planted up so far covers about one hectare. All the students are involved and each plant is marked with a wooden stake with the name of the plant and the student who planted it. There are Richmond Birdwing Butterfly vines planted and they are thriving. We all tried out the outdoor classroom and what a great place it is to have a lesson.

Weed … you’re fired!

Biosecurity Queensland has put out a timely reminder that we should be on the lookout for Fireweed at this time of the year.

Fireweed (Senecio madagascariensis) is a declared weed which causes problems for livestock and native grazing animals due to its poisonous nature.

It s a smallish upright (up to 60cm high) herb with multi-branched stems and five cent coin sized daisy-like yellow flowers. Each flower can produce up to 150 wind-blown seeds, and so it can spread easily.

Luckily, we have very little Fireweed in our part of the world, in stark contrast to the Gold Coast and the whole of the coastal strip of New South Wales, where it is rampant and causes significant losses to primary production.

This far north, you’ll generally only notice it at this time of the year when it flowers – although the dry spell may have restricted its flowering this year.

If you see fireweed growing on your property make sure you take the necessary steps to control it, as the seeds can easily be dispersed by wind and livestock and transported in pasture seed, hay, turf, mulch and via car, mower or tractor tires.

Fireweed is a restrictive invasive plant under the Biosecurity Act 2014 which means everyone has a general biosecurity obligation to minimise the spread of Fireweed. Grey Myrtle or Carrol

Backhousia myrtifolia The Grey Myrtle or Carrol is another of our local beauties. Its natural range is from Gladstone in Queensland to Bega in south east NSW. It is commonly seen as a small tree to 10m, but cutting grown nursery specimens are a bushy 3-7m. It is a very versatile plant with stunning flushes of new growth that looks best in full sun to semi shade. When crushed, its leaves give off a lovely fruity scent. It produces dense clusters of creamy flowers with lovely star shaped petals. A yearly prune can keep this shrub at any height you desire. Pruning will produce a much denser shrub which is ideal as a screen or windbreak.

Seniors have a blast at the Masters Games

Contributed by Norm Taylor Four of the adults from San Taekwondo joined in the fun when they competed in Taekwondo at the Pan-Pacific Masters Games at the Gold Coast last weekend, finishing with two gold and two silver medals.

The Taekwondo event was held at Jupiter’s Casino with 116 competitors from all over Australia and New Zealand aged between 30 and 73. The San team had four members: Jodi Chapman and Christine Mortimer from Beerwah and husband and wife Norm and Kate Taylor from the Kenilworth and Maleny clubs.

Christine was first up on the mats taking on a much higher ranked opponent in what was her debut fight. This was a very exciting match with the lead changing hands many times until Christine managed to score with a head kick in the dying seconds of the final round to secure the win.

Unfortunately Christine's next opponent was fellow club mate Jodi who had received a bye to the final. Despite their friendship both ladies were fighting for the gold medal after many months of dedicated training where they had both worked hard to be ready with the help of the club's strength and conditioning coach, physiotherapist and martial arts instructors.

Christine also had to recover from an ACL tear in February.

Both ladies fought exceptionally well in the final showing good skill and tactics. Unfortunately Christine was carrying a foot injury from her first fight which made it difficult for her to compete.

Jodi won the fight to finish with Gold and Christine with Silver.

Kate, also in her debut, took on a heavier and more experienced opponent. She fought well but was unable to hold her position in the ring and was defeated to claim the silver.

Norm was competing in the biggest division in the competition and took gold after narrowly winning his preliminary match in the dying seconds, then dominating in the final. In the final he got off to a strong start leading 3-0 however his opponent was unable to continue after being knocked down and injuring his shoulder.

Business Bowls fifth week. The winners for the night were ‘We are here for the Snags’ on 77 points.

Friday night bare foot bowls will be on the next three Fridays, 6.00pm for a 6.30pm start.

Cost $10.00. Anyone is welcome including non-members. Bring a friend or partner for an enjoyable evening under lights.

The annual Forever Young Charity Bowls night held on Saturday was a huge success with over $5000.00 raised for cancer. All those who turned up for a game of bowls also had a great time. Thanks to all those who donated raffle prizes and a big thanks to Chris Freshwater who organised this event.

A great turnout on Sunday for the Diggers vs Civvies game. Over 30 members took part which was a great turnout considering the hot conditions. The Diggers had a big win 117 to 54.

Police Bowls Day break up is 11am Sunday, December 4. Cost is $30.00 for bowls and lunch or $7.00 just for bowls from 11.30am. All members welcome. Place your names down on the sheet at the club.

Saturday, November 19: We will be holding a quarterly meeting at Club Glasshouse from 9.30am. One of the many things on the agenda to be discussed is the changing of men’s pants from white to navy blue.

On Wednesday, December 14 all members are welcome for a Christmas game of bowls / lunch which is being organised by a few of the lady bowlers who bowl of a Wednesday. $20.00 includes a game of bowls plus lunch, and there will also be raffles throughout the day.

If everybody could bring a gift worth around $10.00 it would be most appreciated.

Tickets are also on sale for our Club's Official Christmas Luncheon and Presentation of badges which is to be held on Saturday, December 3 at 12noon. Cost is $20.00 for members and $30.00 for non-members. Come enjoy the company of your fellow club members and celebrate what has been a great year. Tickets can be purchased at our office on the days that we bowl at the club.

First place went to Tom Bertwistle with 66 nett, Runner-up went to Liz Mellish with 70 nett on a count back from third place winner Hans Van Sambeeck, and Michael Kapper, both with 70 nett. No nearest the pin recorded.

Wednesday, November 9: our ladies played in an American Foursomes 18 Hole Competition. The team of Penny Edwards and Liz Mellish came first with 68, Runners-Up were Liz Mellish & Seri Tytherleigh with 71 and Third place went to the team of Beth Glover and Anne Devane with 73.125. Nearest to the Pin went to Susanne Hardy on Hole 3 and Liz Mellish on Hole 14.

Friday, November 11: Our usual Chook Run competition was held with first place (and the chook) going to John Tytherleigh with 23 points, runner-up was Rod Waldron with 22 points and third place went to Jan Johnston with 21 points.

Saturday, November 12: there was an 18 Hole Single Stroke Competition held for both the men and the ladies. Winner was Dennis Brown with 64 nett, Runner-up was Joe Walters with 65 nett and third place went to Chris Pottinger with 68 nett. The next five golfers all came in on countbacks with 69 nett, Geoff Smith, Gary Dallyn, Bill Reynolds, Liz Mellish and Dave Nielsen. Nearest To Pin: John Clayton Hole 5 and Joe Walters Hole 3.

Our Golf Club is still very picturesque despite the need for some rain to fall. Maleny Golf Club is situated at 15 Porters Lane, North Maleny and the ambiance and natural environment of our course offers nine holes, each with its own challenge. An 8.30am shotgun start was scheduled to enable the annual general meeting which followed to begin promptly at 2pm. The event was generously sponsored by Hinterland Body and Soul. Winners were Andrea Campbell and Cathy Stone with a very convincing 63 nett. Sonia Kenway and Trish Dixon were Runners-up with 65¾. Second Runners-up were Helen Lewis and Barb Drury with 67½. Ball rundown went to 70½. Nearest the pin shots went to Pauline Lowry and Heather Rudkin on 2, Lesley Eggleston and Mavis Brimelow on 5, Brenda Briese and Heather Henn on 16, Lea Doyle and Ruth Parish on 18. First set went to tie break and it took a very long time and we felt like we'd had enough already. We lost in the end but we are happy to finish this year of our tennis with having great games. Score was 27- 40 games, 3-5 sets. Team was Donna Kuskopf, Aki Lepper, Liz Mellish, Maree Hooley and thanks Brenda Warner for coming and supporting.

Witta Tennis - Golf Fun Day: A great day was held at Maleny Golf Club. Winners are grinners, on a day were everybody won. There were a few good shots, a few arrggghhhs and a few ‘so close’ and 'you were robbed’.

However, Max, Laurie and Lyall were the best on the day (amazing round) and will be enjoying the sponsored Brouhaha prize. The best net went to No John and his bunch of one hit wonders, again enjoying the sponsored Brouhaha prize. Nearest the pin went to our 'Hole in One' lady Liz, and lucky Tiger.

A man walks into a movie theatre and a few rows in front of him there is a woman and her dog.

As the movie wore on, he noticed that the dog seemed to be watching the show intently.

During the sad scenes, he could hear the dog whimpering.

During the action scenes, the dog was standing on the seat with his paws on the back of the seat in front of him. He even swore he heard the dog chuckling at the funny lines.

And at the end of the movie, the dog again stood on his seat and barked his approval.

The man could stand it no longer, he had to talk to the woman with the dog.

“Excuse me,” he said, "I just wanted to let you know that I could not believe how much your dog enjoyed the movie."

"Me either," said the woman. "He hated the book."
