For a non-sporting type, it was like winning a gold medal!

Long road ahead for Reed Street upgrade Last Wednesday saw the Minister for Transport and Main Roads, the Hon Scott Emerson MP attend a Liberal-National Party fundraising luncheon at Beerwah before visiting the well-known blackspot, Steve Irwin Way and Reed Street intersection at Glass House Mountains.

Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell MP took the opportunity to call the Ministers attention to the seriousness of the issues surrounding the junction.

“Now that work on the D’Aguilar Highway has begun, the Reed Street intersection has become my number one road priority,” Mr Powell said.

“I wanted the Minister to come out and see this intersection for himself to understand the need for an upgrade.”

Mr Powell confirmed that the intersection is higher on his priority list than other local road issues, such as the Bowen Road intersection or the upgrading of the whole Steve Irwin way to a dual carriageway.

“The Reed Street intersection is now my main priority,” he said.

Mr Powell will be nominating the intersection for inclusion in the list of projects which may receive funding if he wins the next election … and if the LNP wins government … and if they then give

the go-ahead for asset sales … and then if (and when) those assets sell … and then if the project is prioritised at the top of the list.

That list will be a long one according to Minister Emerson, as all 89 Members will have their own priority projects they will want to see funded.

When asked for timeframes for when the project may likely be approved or if it was approved, for when the work is likely to be commenced or completed, both Minister Emerson and Mr Powell could give no definite commitments.

“I have listened to the feedback from the local residents and I look forward to working with Minister Emerson to further improve the Glass House road network into the future,” said Mr Powell.

Beerwah Interesting sales facts and great news

For the first six months of last year - January to June 2013, we (our office) had 40 sales.

For the same period this year we have achieved 57 sales, this is an outstanding 43% increase in settled sales. My own statistics show 17 sales and over $7million in dollar value for this same period in 2014.

This continued growth in sales has been made possible by the rising confidence in our special area and throughout the whole country.

We – as a community of interest – are being asked to tell the Government whether we want to see either, both or neither of these sites being intensively developed into the future.

The SEQ Plan sets out that the guiding rule (the urban footprint principles) for managing urban growth in these IGA’s is to promote liveability and transport efficiency and reduce car dependence and private vehicle travel, locate urban development in the urban footprint either within or near existing communities to utilise their infrastructure and services, or within existing activity centres and at key locations along planned public transportation infrastructure.

So for us as a community to assess the suitability of the two IGA’s, we need to keep this guiding principle at the forefront of our minds. Then to make a judgement, we need to also consider each site’s ability to: • assist in the delivery and performance of infrastructure (including public transportation) • protect environmental values

• achieve urban consolidation and self containment • achieve coordinated delivery of infrastructure • achieve high environmental performance Specifically, issues which have been identified and need to be put under the microscope for these two defined IGA’s are: • the protection of the inter-urban greenbelt break • the impacts on the Pumicestone Passage • the impacts on environmentally significant areas, species, landscape features and visual amenity • their interrelationship to the existing urban centres of Caloundra, Landsborough and Beerwah • their connectivity and enhancement of existing and previously planned future infrastructure, such as roads, rail, hospitals, schools, and water supply and treatment.

Considering that any urban development on either site may not be happening for another 30 or more years into the future, some bigger picture issues need also to be pondered.

What will be the impacts of rising sea levels?

What will be the residential wants for future families? How will our oil dependent transport systems operate? Can our region sustain 600,000 people in 2041? Can we claim to predict what the lifestyle values and aspirations of people will be in 30, 40 or 50 years time?

ELISSA JACKSON PSYCHOLOGIST BA (Psych), Grad Dip in Behav Studies in Health Care, MCrim (Forensic Psych) Psychologist Elissa Jackson has recently undertaken a classic tree change and relocated her life and successful practice in Melbourne to the beautiful Sunshine Coast Hinterland. She has just opened her consulting practice in Beerwah (next to Glass House Holistic Veterinary service) and she and her husband are embracing all the positive aspects this lifestyle change (and better weather!) brings. She is a registered psychologist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, Medicare, Work Cover and Veterans and Veterans Families Counselling Service and holds full membership with the Australian Psychological Society and Employee Assistance Professional Association of Australasia.

These are some of the basic tenets by which we need to judge the relative merits of the two IGA’s so that we can give an informed and unambiguous message to the two local State Members – Mark McArdle and Andrew Powell.

The area was identified for potential future residential development in about 2000, when it was owned by Lendsworth (who subsequently sold to Stockland).

The where and what of Halls Creek IGA

Cattle grazing continues to this day, although the land appears not to be managed to maximise their pastoral efficiency, and so has become run down and underproductive.

Hall’s Creek IGA is a region totalling about 3,200 hectares of coastal plain on the eastern side of the Bruce Highway, roughly sitting south of Bells Creek Road, and bordered by the Pumicestone Passage to the east.

It is largely freehold land, with the largest landholder being the developer Stockland, who owns approximately 1,400 hectares or rural zoned land.

The site adjoins the soon to be developed Caloundra South Greenfield urban development, which is also owned by Stockland.

Prior to that, the lands were used for pine forests and grazing.

The area sits within the catchment of the Pumicestone Passage, with the lands draining through the Coochin Creek and Halls Creek subcatchments.

Approximately 40% of the site is flood-prone with the land being between 2m and 20m above the high tide level.

Mixed in are areas of native State Forest, National Park, Council reserves, and private freehold of various sizes owned by many different landholders.

The locality contains some wetlands, is adjacent to an internationally recognised waterway (Pumicestone Passage) and sits alongside a National Park.

The IGA sits mostly within the Pumicestone Passage catchment, flowing through the Mellum and Bells Creek sub-catchments.

The where and what of Beerwah East IGA Beerwah East (or Beerwah-Caloundra South Corridor) IGA is approximately 5,200 hectares of a mixture of state owned (70%) and privately owned (30%) lands.

The IGA sits between the Steve Irwin Way and the Bruce Highway, and approximately from Roys Road in the south to Forestry Road in the North.

by Hancock Plantations Queensland.

A portion of the northern area drains into Ewen Maddock Dam, thus being within the Mooloolah River catchment.

The IGA is generally not prone to flooding, with elevations of 20m to 70m above the high tide mark.

Maleny Players mark WW1 August Centenary

Using authentic letters from the Front donated by local people, Maleny Players are staging a newly-written production to commemorate the outbreak of World War 1, a 100 years ago.

Entitled ‘Billy Goes to War’, it follows the story of Digger Billy Smith, his comrades and his family throughout the four years of the War from 1914 to eventual peace in 1918.

Following a local appeal, playwright David Crewe was offered letters and other material from local people to add authenticity to his piece.

Beth Whan, of Maleny gave him a copy of a letter written by her father Oswald after the Gallipoli landings, in which he was wounded. This is now included in the show.

David said, “all the material has been enormously helpful in giving the production both a local connection and the reality and horror of the war.

“We are now into rehearsals with a cast of more than 30 people – civilians, soldiers, nurses as well as actors representing the warring countries.”

New title challenge for ‘Handful’ Last March we brought you the story of our own World Champion boxer Brett W. (‘Handful’) Smith from Landsborough.

Brett, 33, already holds the WBF Lightweight World Championship as well as the IBF Australasian Championship belt.

This weekend, he has a shot at another world championship – the WBU World Lightweight belt.

He comes up against a fancied fighter from the Philippines, Jerry (‘Dangerous’) Nardo.

Nardo is a younger fighter, who at the age of 23 has an impressive 19 wins and four defeats record within his short career.

Brett’s record is similar (19 wins / two defeats), and he is very positive about his preparations.

“While youth is a great thing, the strength and experience of a man can’t be bought and my conditioning has been great for this fight, so I'm confident in getting the job done,” said Brett.

“Both of us have decent KO records with about half of our fights winning that way, so anything can happen.

“Personally I feel it will go the distance as he seems super tough which Filipino fighters always are.”

Brett mixes his training between Coorparoo Boxing Gym and the Stephen Pitt’s Hinterland Boxing Club at Beerwah and has been working hard to prepare for this bout.

“I’ve left no stone unturned in preparing for this title bout. I’ve been sparring with a Gold Coast boxer who beat Nardo previously, so that I can learn from his success,” Brett said.

Beerwah Police would like to say a huge thank you to all the people who have assisted in the fundraising efforts for our colleague, Senior Constable Len Elliott.

The support from the local community has been incredible, from the public passing on messages of good will to the local businesses who have given so generously.

The committee set up to organise the fundraising efforts, certainly have their work cut out for them. They have so far conducted a very successful Golf day at Beerwah Golf Club which ended with a raffle draw of some of the many items donated. All the funds raised from the Golf day and future planned events will go to help Len and his family as he continues on his recovery.

Constable Sue Lowndes and the Beerwah Neighbourhood Watch have been the driving force behind efforts to have a ‘Turn the Screws’ event in Beerwah, with the assistance of the local Lions Club and the support of the Beerwah RSL who are allowing us the use of their car park.

‘Turn the Screws’ is an initiative to reduce the theft of vehicle number plates. While the theft of plates themselves can be little more than a minor irritation to the owner of the vehicle, the number plates are often used in other offences. The stolen plates are placed on another vehicle to assist in disguising the offenders.

The ‘Turn the Screws’ campaign is an opportunity for vehicle owners to have their number plate screws swapped for special non-reversible screws that can only be removed using a special tool.

The Beerwah event will be held on Saturday, July 19 from 9.00am to 11.00am at the Beerwah RSL car park on Beerwah Parade. We will be asking for a gold coin donation only so it’s a great opportunity to come and secure your plates against theft and assist in turning the screws on crime.

Retune your TV on July 17 Across Australia, TV frequencies are being changed to free up airwave space for new services such as mobile broadband.

This means that in our Glasshouse Country areas, you will need to retune your digital TV, set-top box or digital TV recorder to find the channels that have moved.

Retuning is done using the remote.

Start by pressing the ‘menu’ button on your remote then looking for the ‘set-up’ options.

Then select words like ‘channels’ or ‘auto-tuning’ and follow the prompts. A scanning bar may appear so when the scan finishes, you should be able to receive all the digital TV channels.

For this area, the federal Department of Communications says that the retune date is July 17. They are also saying that there will be some outages and disruptions to TV transmissions on the days before and after the retune, due to work being conducted at the transmission tower site.

Unfortunately for those with poor reception, it won’t mean better pictures, as the retune simply moves some free-to-air TV channels to a new location on the broadcast spectrum and is unlikely to change TV reception or coverage.

From Saturday, July 19, the day that marks 200 years since the death of Matthew Flinders, new interpretive panels will be available for viewing.

Contributed by Ursula Starkovsky Once again the Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains celebrated the change-over night in style at the Beerwah Hotel. A big thank you goes to the immediate past President Ross Horne and a big welcome to this year’s elected President Ian Hope. Ian has a long history with the Rotary organisation, not just with our club, but also at his previous locations.

Part of the celebration each year is that before the welcoming ceremony, the ‘still president’ distributes donations and appreciation awards to organisations and individuals of his choice.

It was no different this year. The Peachester Rural Firebrigade, Glasshouse Mountains Menshed, Glasshouse Mountains Chaplaincy, St Vincent de Paul Society, Glasshouse Country Care, CWA – Young Mums, Morris House, Emergency Foodbank (Anglicare), Wildlife Hospital and Alzheimers Association of Australia all received a financial contribution from our Club.

This year’s recipients of the Paul Harris Award

were, firstly, Lea Parkes for her tireless efforts to make our community a better place through the Glasshouse Country News.

The second recipient was Helen Weil from Beerwah High School. Helen is the force behind the Interact Club, teaching our young people about charity work through the Rotary Organisation and looking out for the less fortunate.

After the donations and awards were handed out, it was time to welcome this year’s president Ian Hope. Ian will take our club forward with new ideas and possibly new projects. We all wish him the very best and a prosperous and successful Rotary Year. The international Rotary theme for this current year is ‘Light up Rotary’.

Contributed by Helen White There has been lots of fun and games happening lately at Coonowrin Kids Playgroup at Glass House Mountains State School. Coonowrin Kids Playgroup meets every Wednesday morning from 8.30am to 11.00am. We welcome children of all ages.

We have lots of fun activities set up in our yard for your child to experience. You can participate in easel painting, sandpit fun, an obstacle course to help with your child’s gross motor skills and much more.

We also have lots of interesting activities to do inside our playgroup room. We have dough to help develop strong little fingers, a great home corner area that the children can experience imaginative play in, lots of blocks for our budding builders, and puzzles and books to keep our fingers and brains busy, just to name a few.

Every week we like to do an art activity that your child can participate in and music is incorporated into this inside play time as well.

Celebrate National Tree Day at Beerburrum

Sunday, July 27 will be a busy day at Beerburrum with the Matthew Flinders Festival, the Flinders Tour Trail Run, and a National Tree Day activity underway as well.

GMAN members from their native plant nursery will acknowledge National Tree Day by giving away free trees or shrubs at the Flinders Tour Trail Run and at the Matthew Flinders day celebrations in Beerburrum.

This year also marks 25 years of environmental and community work by Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN).

GMAN also has a long history of association with the Trail Running Association Queensland (TRAQ) and will mark this by organising a guided walk along the Soldiers Settlers Track on the day of the Flinders Tour Trail Run at Beerburrum.

Bellamarteno’s new owner Harry Mann took over the site of what was previously only a take away wood fire pizza shop late last year. He’s rebranded the business to become an Italian restaurant that focuses on pasta and pizza. Moving up from interstate and with five years’ experience successfully running numerous Italian restaurants on the Sunshine Coast, Harry is keen to offer locals the Bellamarteno dining experience.

Bellamarteno not only specialises in wood fire pizza and pasta, but also includes meal options of chicken, veal and seafood dishes.

Asked about the appeal of Italian food – Harry believes that the cuisine should be one that everyone can eat. Pizza and pasta are a popular food that most people love and the menu will appeal to both young and old, while happily catering to most dietary requirements.

With all staff fully trained and qualified chefs, the new business whilst offering a complete menu overhaul, will also strive to keep the prices affordable to appeal to both new and existing customers. As Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors’ newest conservation partner, AAT Kings will make a significant donation of $48,000 over two years, with the organisations uniting over a shared passion for caring for the nation’s unique wildlife so that it can be protected for many years to come.

Terri Irwin said they are so grateful to be receiving this donation which will directly support the treatment and rehabilitation of koalas, one of Australia’s most iconic and unique endangered species at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital.

As one of Australia’s beloved marsupials, koalas are among the most commonly treated patients at Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, which cares for nearly 800 koalas each year at an average cost of $1,500 per animal. Could not believe it

Over the past three weeks we have been watching a pair of Plovers nesting on the vacant block of land at our back fence.

Early last week we assisted three teenage boys who were trying to retrieve a football which had accidentally landed beside the birds nest. We gave the boys a golf umbrella to use as a cover, as the Plovers were standing in defensive mode with their wings outspread. The boys also used the ‘For sale’ sign on the block as a barrier between them and the birds. With encouragement to distract the birds, the ball was retrieved without injury to either the boys or the Plover's nest.

The umbrella was returned with thanks and the boys left the block with good humour. We advised the boys that the eggs would hatch soon and suggested they play football elsewhere as the Plovers are very protective of their young.

You can imagine our horror when yesterday we witnessed a vehicle, driven by a neighbour resident enter the vacant block and deliberately run over the Plover’s nest. The vehicle then turned, very carefully and drove over the nest again.

When we inspected the damage, it was clear that the nest was totally destroyed and that the eggs had been close to maturity.

The wilful destruction of wildlife, on someone else’s property, beggars belief. It is also an appalling example to set to the young – if wildlife is of an annoyance – then kill it.

Plovers have nested around our property for years – certainly for longer then the establishment of the housing estate. Hours later the Plovers were still inspecting their nest.

This act of deliberate cruelty has been reported to the relevant authorities.

RV sites

In response to several recent letters, I'd like to acknowledge the feedback council has received on the issue of RVs at Beerwah, which has been both for and against.

Currently, the regulatory situation at the sports ground is under review, and we are working with the community management committee on this. We are investigating how our region and this council can better encourage and support the growing RV sector and I have called for a report to council, which is under way.

However much I would like it to be quicker, there are complex new state guidelines and national competition issues involved, so I can't advocate we shortcut the process.

We need to understand, as best we can, a still evolving RV sector, and set up effective and fair conditions for everyone involved. The goal is to provide certainty for the future. I can however, acknowledge the variety of views in the community and ask for patience while we work on this important tourism development issue.

Re: Pathways

I moved to Beerwah Heights Estate on their second release of the Estate in 2007. There is a walkway between Peachester Road, behind the Shopping Centre into the Estate at Parkside drive.

In this second release of 182 properties we were here well before most of the houses were built.

But even in the early days I was very concerned as to the building contractor traffic and those already in the estate not having a walkway from Usher Boulevard onwards.

I discussed this when the last election was on with both Ann Ross and Rick Baberowski. I was told it wasn't requested by council that the developer put a pathway in.

I've since requested that this be looked at, but to no avail.

I have no idea how many are in the original release of the estate, but of the 182 homes which front the two main streets, there are an amazing amount of school children that go past. Parents with young children, prams and mobility chairs and those walking their dogs use the road to walk past to this exit to the shops, school etc. I do know that children from Pine Camp Road use this access to go to school and they are not on this estate but using it as the best and easiest access to school facilities and the shopping centre.

Save the Forest: Local family vs. the Politicians

Our family were delighted to take part in the Community Cabinet held in Maroochydore State High School on June 22. We had originally petitioned to meet with Premier Campbell Newman but were referred instead to the Minister for National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing, Minister Steve Dickson. We met with the Minister, his Chief of Staff and the Director General - an impressive line up!

We discussed the Steve Irwin Way forest (Meridan Hill section of Beerwah State Forest) with them and voiced our concerns regarding the planned interchange design and the planned motocross park, which will destroy at least 25 hectares of forest and impact on an additional 534 hectares.

We informed them that this is one of the last large corridors of native vegetation on the Sunshine Coast and that it contains many common native species and 19 endangered or threatened species (including Koalas and the Glossy Black Cockatoo).

We pointed out that the trees in this forest include hundreds of ancient habitat trees and that the aforementioned plan is akin to organising paint ball in the Louvre!

We wanted to know if we could be provided with details showing how they decided on this area for the facility.

The response from the Minister and his Director General gravely concerned us; they could (or would) not produce any details regarding the process for deciding on this site. They then went on to explain, using their new criteria, that many of the current National Parks wouldn’t be National Parks anymore.

We were also very concerned with the Minister’s flippant response that he could always put the motocross facility in Mary Carncross Park!

How to save our hinterland region:

Land developer Stockland would like to build a large city near Pumicestone Passage with a population of 75,000 people. I cannot believe the yarns they come up with.

With that many people it will affect Pumicestone Passage and the wildlife in that area and the cost to the tax payer will be vast. We’re being told unless our population grows many times larger than what it is now; we won’t get our infrastructure for a very long time. That’s blackmail.

The State Government LNP has a 30 year plan for the Sunshine Coast that would never get off the ground.

Labor had a 20 year plan, and before that, Liberal had a 10 year plan. What are they doing now?

Let our State government know how you feel and why. They need feedback. This area is ready for tourism and infrastructure which will create more work and businesses, being silent creates nothing.

For example: - road cycling, mountain biking, walking, abseiling, mountain climbing and bird watching, that’s a start. That will bring the people in and they need to eat and sleep.

All your thoughts need to go to State Members of Parliament Mark McArdle or Andrew Powell.

The concept may be great, a large company that will directly benefit by abusing our land. Then what’s left for your kids and grandkids?

Coochin Creek Bushland Group is currently rehabilitating the wetland area in Emma Park alongside Coochin Creek. Unfortunately there has been vandalism in the area with plants pulled out, stakes broken and used for fires, and stakes and guards removed from the site, and trampling of plants. These plants and materials are all purchased from a hard-earned community grant and all the work has been done by volunteers in their own time.

Please would adults supervise their youngsters when in the area and report any suspicious activity in the planted areas? While the park is for recreational use, please respect our hard work and limited funds.

When these plants grow up it will look fantastic and attract birds and animals to the area as well as helping to keep the water in the creek clean.

Each year the trees will bear a few cones but every third year they will produce a heavy crop. Before European settlement the aboriginals were acutely aware of these seasonal events and many travelled long distances to enjoy the great feasts of roasted bunya nuts.

In those early days the Blackall Range was spoken of as the Bon-yi Mountains.

In the 1860s, decisions taken by the new Queensland Government allowed timber-getters and settlers to move into the area. From this time the trees began to be cleared.

Several bunya pines continue to grow on the Bankfoot House property, the oldest of which was planted in 1878 by the Grigor family. It is believed the tree was planted to commemorate the birth of twin girls, Clementina and Margaret born 10 July 1878, to parents William and Mary Grigor. Sadly, daughter Margaret only survived a few months, but Clementina ultimately married William Smith Burgess and lived at Bankfoot House for her entire life.

The bunya trees continue to produce cones containing nuts during the first two months of the year. The considerable size and weight of the cones falling from the trees at this time make it an undesirable place to picnic or park a car.

Bali temple offering A daily task of the Hindu women of Bali is the creation (or purchase) of offerings to the gods.

But for special festivals and holy days, the humble routine becomes a major production. At Pura Tirta Empul in the centre of Bali, most visit to bathe in the famed Sacred Springs, but go deeper into the Temple complex at festival time and you’ll find an army of women busy at work producing a mountain of exotic offerings for the faithful. From reeds and seeds, flowers and fruits, exquisite little basket platters are fashioned as gifts to the gods for the ensuing ceremonies. This devotee was fashioning dough as part of a highly elaborate baked confection being assembled at the temple complex. F/5 1/100sec ISO 100.

Another month has passed, and the Glass House Interpretive and Visitor Centre has been a hive of activity.

With the cooler weather, we have a lot of visitors from the south of Australia hoping for a bit of warmth. We have also seen a number of overseas visitors which is always very interesting.

We have several Ambassadors who speak several languages and this provides a chance to polish up their skills.

In order for visitors to remember their trip to the Sunshine Coast, we are developing a range of gift ideas to complement the local honey and jam we already sell. If you need a small gift or card, call into the centre and have a browse.

We have a new wall panel in the centre, celebrating the bicentennial of Matthew Flinders death, as the first tourist as such to the Glass House Mountains.

The display has a lot of interesting information about his visit and life. If Ivon is on duty he will be happy to pass on his expertise as he was the driving force behind the project to have the panel created. It will be on display to the public from July 20.

Our visitor centres on the coast have had some fantastic reports of whale sightings over the past few weeks.

Operators Whale One offer whale watching tours from Mooloolaba and also a new venture by Sunreef Dive allows people to swim with the whales.

Both offer a great opportunity to see these magnificent beasts. Come and see us if you would like more information.

New initiatives to assist our veterans

The Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Senator the Hon. Michael Ronaldson recently announced two initiatives aimed at helping our war veterans.

• From July 1, 2014 veterans with certain mental health and other conditions are able to access treatment for these conditions regardless of their cause and link to service. VVCS is a free and confidential service that offers eligible veterans counselling, group programs and after-hours crisis support 24 hours a day.

Our veterans young and old need to know that there is support available to them and that their role in protecting our nation is not forgotten once they are home on Australian soil.

Koalas habitat purchased in Crohamhurst Koalas in the Sunshine Coast hinterland will be the big beneficiaries with the Newman Government’s purchase and rehabilitation of 126 hectares of koala habitat. I recently had the opportunity to visit the property and see some of the hard work being put in by Departmental officers and conservation volunteers. More than 18,000 koala habitat trees will be planted on the property at Crohamhurst with around 8,000 trees planted so far. This is part of the Government’s $26.5 million commitment to help ensure our koala populations continue to survive and grow in the future.

Halls Creek / Beerwah East – Should we shackle future generations?

Have you ever heard of Halls Creek? How about Beerwah East? Do you know what they are and what they entail?

A recent survey undertaken by the University of the Sunshine Coast shows more than half of respondents had never heard of either areas.

Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney has asked both myself and Member for Glass House Andrew Powell to consult with the community regarding which potential future growth site they would like included in the South East Queensland Regional Plan. Both are merely investigation sites, not being considered until 20-25 years down the track to cater for potential growth in 30-40 years’ time.

Given they are investigation sites; do our future generations not deserve the right to say what they want the future of the Coast to be? If we restrict them and not even allow them the chance to say which area in the future should be used for growth is that not inter-generational arrogance?

South East Queensland is now home to just over 3.1 million people, accommodating 70 per cent of the Queensland’s population in only 1.3 per cent of the state’s total area.

The simple fact is since the SEQRP 2009-2031 was released in 2009, the growth rates and pressures have changed which has prompted a review of the plan.

Halls Creek is located next to the Bruce Highway, and has been dubbed as south of Caloundra South, while Beerwah East is located near Steve Irwin Way. USC data shows Halls Creek is 2310ha, while Beerwah East is 5032ha. Halls Creek is currently being used for cattle grazing, while Beerwah East is currently being used by HQ Plantations, who have a 99-year-lease to carry out their forestry operations.

The State Government is committed to consulting with the community and together with local councils we have already agreed on preserving the need for an inter-urban break between Caboolture and Caloundra.

In May we held a site tour for community groups, and a community forum was held on July 3.

Information booths will also be set up in the main foyer of Beerwah and Caloundra libraries in August and September. Dates are available on my Facebook page or via contacting my office on 5491 2780. This is our future and that of those to come. It’s important for the present and the future residents to have their say.

What tax deductions can I claim on my rental property?

With the last financial year over and the next one newly begun, it might pay to think about taxes. One of the benefits of having a rental property is that, since it’s considered a source of income, you’re entitled to claim for a wide array of tax deductions.

Environment Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Nest Boxes

Old growth trees are like gold to many of Australia’s natives – hard to find, but precious – specifically, for their natural hollows which provide nesting, breeding and roosting sites.

Approximately 40% of Australia’s mammals and 20% of our birds, as well as reptiles, frogs and even insects, depend on hollows.

Hollows only form in very old trees – at least 100 years old. With encroaching development, agricultural clearing, logging and fires, these ancients are simply not there anymore. The largest hollow-nesters, such as black cockatoos and large owls, are the most vulnerable, as natural hollows spacious enough for these big species may take centuries to develop.

Planting more trees and stopping clearance of old growth forest will help for the future, but in the meantime, nest boxes are a vital interim resort.

However, it is not okay to put up any old nest box and hope for the best.

It is important to assess which wildlife species are present in your area and cater for them specifically, with boxes of the correct size, shape, height and location. It is recommended that an expert be consulted before installing any boxes, as it may have the opposite effect in attracting introduced species, such as Indian Myna. A special barrier or baffle may be necessary to prevent these pests from flying directly into the hole (parrots tend to climb up to the entrance). Post-installation maintenance is also important to ensure boxes aren’t taken over by European honey bees, or rats.

Go Green Rainforest Nursery Plant of the Week Grey Myrtle or Carrol Backhousia myrtifolia

The Grey Myrtle or Carrol is another of our local beauties. Its natural range is from Gladstone to Bega in SE NSW. It is commonly seen as a small tree to 10m but cutting grown nursery specimens are a bushy 3 to 7m. It is a very versatile plant with stunning flushes of new growth that looks best in full sun to semi shade. When crushed its leaves give off a lovely fruity scent. It produces dense clusters of creamy flowers with lovely star shaped petals.

A yearly prune can keep this shrub at any height you desire. Pruning will produce a much denser shrub which is ideal as a screen or windbreak.

Koala-tracking canine is on the case

If you were a koala and had a dog tracking you down, you’d be hoping it was Maya the environmental canine on the case.

Maya, the only professionally-trained koala poop detection dog in the world, is on the Sunshine Coast as part of the council’s koala conservation program.

In a twist of fate, Maya was saved from the RSPCA and is now saving koalas.

The friendly border collie will spend the next few weeks seeking out koala scats (as they are more politely referred to in the industry) on 55 Sunshine Coast Council reserves, Land for Wildlife and voluntary conservation agreement properties.

Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the survey was a vital component of the council’s Koala Conservation Plan and Maya’s work was funded through the environment levy.

“Knowing where our koalas are on the Sunshine Coast is essential if we are to identify area-specific threats and impacts and develop the appropriate conservation measures to mitigate those impacts,” Cr McKay said.

“The survey outcomes will contribute to a growing body of data that is informing the draft Koala Conservation Plan which will be going out for community consultation in October.”

“Maya will have a huge impact on our survey work and will provide the data we need to protect our koalas in the long-term.

“We are committed to protecting our koala population and bringing Maya onto the team is just another example of our environment levy at work.”

“As soon as she’s found poop - sometimes under a minute - she drops. You can work out whether the poop is from a fresh colony, if they are cruising through or staying longer.”

Dog trainer Gary Jackson works with Maya’s owner, Dr Romane Cristescu from WildHelpers, and ecologist Olivia Woosnam from OWAD Environment who together ensure Maya remains efficient, balanced and highly-motivated.

Romane said Maya had the perfect temperament for this type of work.

“Maya is obsessive compulsive,” Romane said. “She wants to chase a ball all day long.

“These dogs need to be attentive to humans and must follow orders and because she’s working off-leash in a national park, we needed to ensure she was not a threat to wildlife.

“Every animal is safe with Maya. She even allows our family chickens to eat her food.”

Romane has been involved in koala research since 2006 and before Maya came along, she spent a lot of time on her knees searching for koala scats.

“Obviously working with the dog is more enjoyable, but Maya’s acute sense of smell makes her so much faster and more efficient than a human and we can provide more accurate data for conservation,” she said.

But does Romane hold out hope the koala can be saved?

“You have to hope otherwise it’s not worth it.

“If we can’t save the koala, it’s not a good outlook for any animal because koalas are the cutest in the world.”

If I was to say there was one thing I have learnt in my years as a minister it’s that everybody hurts sometime. I’ve known families who look brilliant from the outside, but scratch beneath the surface there is the pain of difficult marriages, drugs, alcohol, wayward children, death, cancer and so on, the list goes on and on.

As a Christian I believe in a loving God and yet as I look around this world I see such beauty mingled with such pain. And I keep asking God, if you are that loving and good, why haven’t you done something about this world; and I want you to do it now.

The bible tells me that God has done something about it, and he will do something about it, but He has done it his way.

I look around at cancer and death and fractured relationships and I say God fix this but God says: there is a bigger problem, that’s sin - the things you think are important and bad are just symptoms of a bigger issue, namely sin. We say God treat the symptoms, God says I’ll treat the

I saw some pictures of the effects of smallpox virus. The person is covered in what looks like pimples. Bad things are like the pimples of smallpox, they are a sign there is a bigger issue.

We want God to put a bandaid on the pimples of this world, God says: ‘let me treat the disease.’

God treated our disease when Jesus died on the cross. He took sin, our sin, and the universes sin upon himself.

And God promises that one day he will apply that remedy to the entire universe and when he does, all will be as it should be.

Why wait? Simply because when God applies the remedy, if we haven’t had our sin dealt with properly we will be in God’s firing line - and that would be a terrible thing. So God waits to give all of us an opportunity to turn back to him.

A young son came to his dad with a broken toy and said: “Dad will you fix it please?” “Of course I will son,” came the reply, “I’ll do it tomorrow.”

We say to God can you fix this awful world please, and God says of course - I already have it will be ready tomorrow.

Jani is very passionate about tennis and is looking forward to promoting and developing the sport in our local area. He will be offering a range of programs from ANZ Hotshots for all junior groups (starting from five years of age), adult groups, private lessons, Squad training (for tournament players) and the new fun, social and fitness based ‘Cardio Tennis’.

Jani’s tennis career has taken him overseas playing professionally in several circuits. His real passion is in coaching however, and as a level two coach, he’s worked at the John Newcombe’s Tennis Academy in Texas and a number of clubs around Australia. Settling in Maleny with his 34 |

We had a great field of 73 players so we were able to play in three divisions. The winner of Division 1 with a score of 35 Stableford points was Lesley Eggleston on the dreaded count back from Mavis Brimelow, also on 35 points. Brenda Briese won Division 2 with 37 points from Lyn Steele on 36 points. Winner of Division 3 with the best score of the day was Marjorie Pavitt with a great score of 41 points. Marjorie was followed by Ruth Parish on 35 points. Nearest to the Pins went to Jen Kelly on number 2, Barb Drury on the 5th and Rosemary Collins on 16. Social or competitive. The Sunshine Orienteers Club is holding a Mountain Bike Orienteering event in the Beerburrum State Forest on Sunday, July 27. There are six courses on offer: 6km is the shortest and is designed for families and newcomers. 36km is the longest. It will all be off-road on forest trails and dirt tracks. It is a sport suitable for a family bonding session or an adventure racer's training run. It can be challenging both mentally and physically at the same time. Super Strawberry 2014 Round 2

It was a very slow week in the Super Strawberry stakes – only one entry in Round 2.

Thanks to Oaklands Farms for keeping up the good work; and they have won this round with an entry weighing 135 grams.

Remember, this novelty competition is for everyone, not just for farmers, and in the past there have been some very impressive entries from the home gardener!

Strawberries can be brought in to Coochin Creek Co-op at any time during the week, and Round 3 closes on Friday, July 18 at 4.00pm.

There is a six-pack from Beerwah Hotel waiting for the winner of each weekly round, so don't let that go to waste!
