I

really try not to talk about the weather in my columns as I always feel like I haven’t tried hard enough to come up with a ‘real topic’! However this week I think I can justify that it is actually topical!

As I sit here at 6.30am on Monday morning writing in my study under a blanket (which definitely creates its own challenges for typing) Brownie informs me that it is a balmy 5 degrees outside.

We have just returned from a driving holiday in NSW travelling on the New England Highway where we stayed with family at Stanthorpe, on Monday, July 6. To me that seemed cold, but sadly there was no talk of snow at that stage. However the highlight for me was the technology available for weather reporting in the house.

When we were leaving the house at 5.00am we received an ‘Ice Alert’ from their indoor weather station which was handy so we at least had the water bottle with us to unfreeze the windscreen.

To be honest though, my favourite device was a camping clock that was beside the bed that when you touched it – it projected first the time and then the temperature in the room onto the ceiling. While it didn’t make it any warmer – being informed up to the minute – just made me feel so much more in control. Hope you are enjoying the seasonal change!

Local News John’s commitment recognised

At the recent Beerwah Lions Changeover Dinner, the highlight of the night was John Cruickshank receiving his Lions International Life Membership.

John joins three other locals as part of this ‘select group’ of Glasshouse Country locals whose committment to Lions has been previously recognised. They are Bob Banner, Ron Boyle and former Lion Bernie Partridge.

To be recognised as a Life Member, the individual must have maintained active membership for over 20 years, and have rendered outstanding service to their club/s and community.

John has been a Lion since 1967, so is nearing 50 years of service, although not all of this has been with the Beerwah Club.

However interestingly, his first club Dawson Valley, was formed in the same year as the Beerwah Club was established.

He originally joined Lions as a charter member of Dawson Valley (now Moura) in Queensland which was chartered on September, 13, 1967 where he served several terms as Treasurer.

Then after moving to Gladstone in 1974 he transferred to Gladstone Port Curtis Lions club where he served one term as president and served many years on 201Q4 Cabinet holding positions such as Zone Chairman, Deputy District Governor, Lioness Chairman Membership Chairman and 1988 Convention Chairman for Gladstone District Convention.

After John retired he and his wife Rita bought a block of land at Glass House Mountains, they then spent the next decade travelling, while mantaining his Lions membership, he wasn't such an active member.

Around the year 2000 the couple decided to build a house on their block and make a life here and to become more involved in activities of the Beerwah Lions Club.

Over the years John and Rita have attended and enjoyed International Lions Conventions in Hawaii, Brisbane, Hong Kong and Montreal.

Beerwah RSL Club future unclear

President of the Beerwah Peachester RSL, Gavin Smith said the future of Beerwah RSL is still uncertain while final options are being followed up.

“The Club was closed on Monday, July 6, which is only temporary at this stage, as the final decision will be not be made until the end of the month on whether we will be able to reopen it,” he said.

“The rumour mill has been working overtime, and it has been disappointing to see the amount of gossip mongering going on around town.

“Contrary to some of the rumours floating around town, the club has not gone into receivership.

“If the club doesn’t get the support to continue operating we may then need to go down this

path, however there is a strict legal process we must adhere to, which involves holding a Special Meeting for the sub-branch members,” he said.

The Beerwah RSL is definitely not alone in the challenges they have faced in operating the club over the past few years, and each month clubs continue to close down across the country.

Gavin believes there are a number of factors that have contributed to the Club’s current financial situation. He says these include the global financial crisis which has seen many people reduce their spending on entertainment, as well as a lack of support from the community, since the sub-branch took over the club management in 2010.

The Beerwah Peachester RSL sub-branch is continuing to function and planning is underway for the Commemorations for Victory in the Pacific Day on August 15 and Vietnam Vet Day on August 18.

Cloud over community use of Beerwah tip Community Recycling Inc (CRI), the well loved and highly regarded local community not-for-profit organisation, has been operating the resource recovery centres at Beerwah, Witta and Mapleton (including the popular ‘tip shops’) under contract from Sunshine Coast Council for many years.

Over the years, they have given tens of thousands of dollars back to other community groups, organisations and events from the proceeds of the recycled goods markets, even raising half the money to originally build the Beerwah Pool.

As part of their community commitment, CRI also ran various work programs – such as work for the dole, school-based traineeships, community corrections placements and volunteer workers.

These programs provided vital life, social and work skills and experience to many participants.

The ‘up-cycling’ of materials into functional items and sculptures were then either donated to community groups, or sold through the market, and the proceeds went back to the community as grants.

In March this year, CRI (in a consortium bid) were unsuccessful in winning the council tender to operate the resource recovery centres, but were looking forward to being able to continue their successful work programs.

According to CRI president, John Nesbit the group had assurances from council that they would be able to operate out of the Beerwah recycling centre … in fact, the new operator – Iolar Pty Ltd – was strongly encouraged by

council to allow CRI to continue their community work programs.

“The new contractor was told by council waste management staff that it would be in his best interest for CRI to be incorporated into his operations of the facility,” said John.

“The contractor – who we have a great relationship with – is more than happy to make that happen. In fact he personally asked me to remain as the CRI president so that the work programs could smoothly transition after the contract changes hands.

“We had verbal and written assurances that council would be allowing CRI to continue to provide these vital work programs from the Beerwah facility,” he said.

But in a cruel twist, council staff arrived at the Beerwah facility last Monday and removed all the remaining tools and machinery that CRI were using, as well as ordering that their stockpile of perfectly good steel products, collected for future fabrication projects, be dumped as scrap.

“This latest decision and action from council has totally floored us,” said John.

“With no notification and no explanation, council have just gone back on all their assurances and promises.

“I really don’t know how we’re going to deliver the work programs that we’d planned.

“It’s a sad and unnecessary loss to the local community.”

GC&M News contacted council and asked a series of 11 detailed questions, trying to

elicit some explanations, and for council to confirm that they were supportive of CRI’s good community works.

Council supplied the following limited response.

“The new Beerwah RRC contractor, Iolar has full control of the Beerwah RRC site and all operations. Most CRI staff previously employed at the Beerwah RRC have been re-employed by Iolar. Other than former contract de-mobilisation activities, council has had no correspondence with CRI.” Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski was unaware of the dilemma.

“The changeover of management has so far been dealt with by the waste management department within the normal procurement process. This isn't something a councillor would normally be involved in, so I haven't been part of the process so far,” he said.

“I have now requested to be kept in the loop on all communications and have stressed the importance of getting this right to council staff.

“I can see absolutely no reason why CRI and other community groups should not get exactly the same level of access to the facility and support from council as they have in the past. They have done a great job and we should support them so they can continue to do so," he said.

“I am currently investigating what has caused the confusion in council's handling of this issue and I will be using whatever powers I can bring to bear to make sure this is swiftly resolved in favour of the community.”

Highway upgrade one step closer It seems that upgrading the Bruce Highway to three lanes has moved to the next stage, according to Federal Member for Fisher Mal Brough MP. Last week Mr Brough announced funding had been allocated for the planning of priority upgrade works on the Bruce Highway between the Pine River and the Caloundra Road interchange.

“This $8 million funding announcement is a major step forward as now real planning work can be completed,” Mr Brough said.

The funding is a commitment of $6.4 million from the Federal Government and $1.6 million from the State Government and will allow for high-level planning to help determine the capacity, flooding and safety issues along the 60 kilometre stretch of the highway.

“This announcement is the first step in a campaign to six-lane the Bruce Highway from the Sunshine Coast to Brisbane – something which has always been talked about but needs to be actioned, sooner rather than later,” Mr Brough said.

As well as an extra two lanes on the Bruce Highway between Caloundra and Caboolture, design work and costings will focus on reducing or eliminating the impacts of Bruce Highway flooding between Caboolture and Steve Irwin Way, particularly at King John Creek, Lagoon Creek and Six Mile Creek.

The planning work is due to start in early 2016 and to continue through to 2018.

Peachester NBN meeting Contributed by Jim Straker

On July 11, over 30 Peachester residents met at the Peachester Hall to further express their objections to the NBN proposal for a microwave tower in the road reserve near to town, and to hear what is being done to fight this proposal.

This unacceptable site would have about 30 households within the Sunshine Coast Council’s (SCC) 400 metre exclusion zone listed in their Telecommunications Facility Code under the SCC Planning Scheme 2014.

The information gathered and the plans for alternatives were on display.

The concerned citizens at the meeting considered five main issues: 1. The need to lodge objections to the proposed road closure by July 16, with Department of Natural Resources and Mining; 2. Start the preparation for an objection against a Development Application for this tower if the road closure objection above is not successful; 3. Convince NBN that there are other sites for a microwave tower that would meet NBN’s needs and the SCC’s Code; 4. Show NBN that the community seeks a landline solution so they do not have to have a microwave tower; and 5. Understand that more NBN tower proposals will be coming for nearby areas.

It was recalled by locals that the current site was burnt out by a bush fire some years ago. The SCC’s Planning Scheme does not allow communications towers in bushfire prone areas.

An alternate site has been located and this information has been sent to NBN - as was requested during the NBN’s recent presentation to residents of Peachester and nearby areas.

Forum focuses on Palmview highway plans As previously reported in GC&M News, the plans to upgrade the Bruce Highway / Steve Irwin Way / Caloundra Road interchange and the highway from this interchange north to the Sippy Downs interchange, have created considerable angst with local residents, businesses, community groups, indigenous peoples and environmental organisations.

A number of protests, community meetings and deputations to the Department of Main Roads have been made to save the Steve Irwin Way forest from destruction.

Alternative road designs, which significantly reduce their impacts, have been created by eminent civil engineers and put to Main Roads.

Aussie World Garage owner Mr Amos amassed over 6,600 signatures on a protest petition against the closure of the on and off ramps into the Aussie World complex, which State Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle MP presented in Parliament last May. But all to no avail … the Department of Main Roads continued to move ahead regardless.

Recently, design plans have been updated and construction timeframes have been brought forward. Federal Member of Fisher Mal Brough MP thinks it’s about time the community were properly consulted.

“The Department of Main Roads aren’t willing to consult with the community on what the new plans are, which as far as I’m concerned is far from good enough,” he said.

Maleny Music Festival to hit top notes again It’s back again this year and it’s bigger than ever!

Maleny Music Festival will welcome over 75 local, national and international performers to the stage from Friday, August 28 until Sunday, August 30.

“Since 2012, we’ve been determined to keep the Festival intimate, friendly and inexpensive to attend. All the while still bringing an incredible program of diverse music genres to our audience,” says event spokesperson Kim Holcroft.

In 2012 saw the 25th anniversary of the very first Maleny Folk Festival – the event which grew and went on to become the Woodford Folk Festival we know today.

One of the original organisers decided to get some

friends together to celebrate that milestone and the party hasn’t stopped!

Now in its fourth year, the Festival is attracting thousands of visitors while still maintaining its relaxed community feel.

“We’ve added some late night comedy to the program this year and the number of performances has increased including an eclectic mix of jazz, blues, world and alternative music.

Free workshops are also on offer, and there’s heaps for the whole family to see and do,” says Kim. Joining the line-up this year is Bek Jean Stewart with her powerful narrative tunes and Brett Holland with his socially topical presence on guitar. John Malcolm will also dazzle on guitar and The Flumes will inspire with their psychedelic electric harp.

Jack and the Giant Killers are going to have you on the dance floor in no time. Band members include music veterans from the Toothfairies and WolfMother.

Snow at Aussie World!

Although there were media reports of a cold snap coming our way at the end of last week, guests visiting Aussie World last Friday were treated to something very special when powerful snow machines were fired up to create a winter wonderland.

This amazing experience is normally reserved for the southern states. So with the temperatures falling, this was a truly special way to end the Winter School Holidays.

Coast cool comes to Beerwah Get ready Beerwah for your new favourite cafe and bar with ‘Mrs Brown’s Espresso and Bar’ now open and ready to rock in the Beerwah Village complex.

Established by Luke Mooney and fiancée Courtney Flint, the new venue brings the coolness of the coast right here to Beerwah with great coffee, all day dining options and an extensive bar menu that reflects the hip but warmly accessible vibe of the place.

Customers will know Luke and Courtney from their other successful venture – Mrs Browns Bakery, which they established together in 2010. The bakery will remain in its spot next to Woolworths but will be renamed to avoid

confusion with the new business which continues the Mrs Browns branding.

As Beerwah locals themselves, Luke and Courtney wanted to set up a venue that they would enjoy going to … one that had great atmosphere and served amazing food and coffee, but also offered somewhere to meet friends and kick back both during the day, and in the evenings.

With this in mind, the new establishment will be open for breakfast seven days a week, followed by lunch and then tapas menu options on offer from 3.00pm.

With seating for around 80 customers, the cafe and bar will remain open until the evening.

Locals can now enjoy meeting up on Friday and Saturday nights, with current licensing allowing opening until 10.00pm. Sunday afternoon will be geared up for a laid back Sunday session vibe with tunes, tapas and jugs of sangria, wines, spirits and beers.

The cocktail and bar menu is being finalised with something to appeal to everyone from craft beers and boutique cider, to wines, spirits and not one but three options of The Mrs Browns signature cocktail – The espresso martini!

Coffee addicts will be pleased to know that they have a state of the art Ruggero coffee machine – aka the ‘Ferrari of coffee machines’, and the resident chefs have put together a menu, that along with traditional crowd pleasers, will also feature signature twists to tempt all tastebuds.

USC academic brings past to life with new novel Internationally acclaimed author, University of the Sunshine Coast Associate Professor and Maleny local Gary Crew will this week launch his latest novel – a fascinating recount of the fate of two young castaways in the Torres Strait.

‘Voicing the Dead’ is based on the true story of two English boys whose lives were spared during a grisly massacre following the shipwrecking of the ‘Charles Eaton’ in 1834.

“Fourteen-year-old Jack Ireland and 18-monthold William D’Oyly were raised by Torres Strait Islanders on the Island of Mer following the beheading of the ship’s other passengers, including young William’s wealthy parents and brother,” Dr Crew said.

“After two years, William D’Oyly was rescued through his family connections, but Jack Ireland was forced to make his own way back to London.

Upon his return, he demanded an audience with the Lord Mayor and gained a court hearing.”

The content of that hearing was turned into a book in 1844, entitled ‘The Ship-Wrecked Orphans’, that was co-authored by Jack Ireland and a newspaper reporter.

Dr Crew has penned ‘Voicing the Dead’ as his own interpretation of Jack Ireland’s biographical book in the style of a palimpsest – a Greek word meaning ‘to over-write’.

“I’m fascinated by these unfinished tales, so to be able to go back and explore them is so ultimately intriguing to me,” he said. “There’s a whole other history of Australia that we just don’t know.”

“Above all, I really want this book to let young people know that it’s okay to read history and that it goes some way in furthering positive steps towards encouraging racial understandings.”

Dr Crew, who is the Program Leader for Creative Writing at USC, is well known for his unique approach to historical writing.

His multi-award winning novel ‘Strange Objects’ broke the rules on how history was written for young people and celebrates its 25th birthday this year.

The 25th Anniversary Edition of ‘Strange Objects’ was launched at the Australian Literacy Educators’ Association Conference in Canberra on Sunday, July 5, complete with new cover art by Shaun Tan. ‘Voicing the Dead’ was launched in Melbourne on Monday, July 6.

We had a great time with many visitors attending and enjoying themselves. Also there were many laughs with members trying to outdo each other when it came to bringing humour to their tasks. It is amazing that each member started off petrified at having to stand up and talk in front of other members; now we have trouble keeping each member contained when it comes to talking. We now have a new committee and hopefully the year ahead will bring new members to our Club. Come along and give us a try.

Introducing a new Weed Busters Group called Mulla River Mob (MRM).

The group will work for two hours on a Sunday once a month, around different properties in Mooloolah Valley, helping landowners catch up with their weeds.

It is also a social group, and after weed busting, a nice morning tea at the property worked on is a great reward for helping out.

If you’re a sucker for strawberries (and who isn’t?) you’re in for a treat, with a number of new niche products now in the pipeline as a result of last month’s strawberry waste forum at the Beerwah RSL. The forum was facilitated by Sunshine Coast Council and the Queensland Strawberry Association. It also involved local growers, food industry businesses, technologists and suppliers to the strawberry industry.

Maleny Cheese Director Sara Bucher was among the forum attendees and said it had planted the seed for a range of new products that could reduce the amount of fruit currently going to waste.

“Throughout September, locally sourced fresh strawberries will be a big feature on our seasonal menu,” she said.

“We’ll be including options for more strawberries on our house specialty cheese platter and we’re also currently working on some fantastic new creations like milkshakes and cheese cakes with locally sourced Sunshine Coast strawberries.

“We are also looking to investigate partnering with a like-minded local, branded grower and developing a new ‘Gourmet Strawberry Yoghurt’ which will be promoted for its local-grower link as well as being delicious!

“Turning food waste into valuable co-products has been an approach Maleny Cheese has used since its inception 11 years ago and in keeping with our ‘zero waste’ approach, we’d like to utilise 'spoiled' local strawberries at our local dairy as another feed supplement for our dairy cows.

“We currently make use of the whey from our cheese making to produce a very nutritious supplement for our cows.

“Showcasing locally produced strawberries during the peak season of production is a delicious way to use regional fruit at its best. If cafes across the coast were to all take this approach at this time, it would help strawberry growers right at the time they need it and would help stem the amount of fruit growers are forced to dump due to excess volumes.”

School News Athletics Carnival

Contributed by Kylie Merola Landsborough State School held their Inter House Athletics Carnival on June 26 at Skippy Park.

Students from Prep to Year 6 participated in a whole host of track and field events - sprinting, relays, shot put, long jump, high jump, and discus, as well as some novelty events for the younger children.

Close to 300 students, along with a huge crowd of parents and spectators, made for a colourful and energetic competition. The camaraderie between the children was wonderful to see as they congratulated and encouraged each other. It wasn't about winning; it was all about having-ago.

Petrie house won the carnival, with Burgess only 10 points behind in second place and Flinders third. Well done to all the young athletes who participated.

School holiday fun

It isn’t always easy to take the kids shopping during the school holidays, however there was plenty of free fun on offer at Beerwah Village these holidays to keep them entertained.

The kids had the opportunity to jump and laugh on the Big Castle and the UFO rides. And word on the street was that everyone enjoyed the Little Red Train, and the awesome Snake and Reptile Show, as well as being able to see Magic Glen perform.

Hundreds of Queensland women are developing breast cancers between screening each year, prompting a warning from Cancer Council for women to be breast aware between mammograms.

The call follows the publication of new data revealing women diagnosed with breast cancer between mammograms experience poorer survival.

Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift urged all women to be breast aware in order to detect any changes that might occur between scheduled screenings.

“Analysis of historical data shows that women diagnosed with breast cancer in between routine mammograms were 59% more likely to die from their cancer than those with a screen-detected breast cancer,” Ms Clift said.

“It’s absolutely critical that Queensland women are breast aware and familiarise themselves with the normal look and feel of their breasts,” Ms Clift said.

“All women should see a doctor immediately if they notice any unusual breast changes.

“Participating in regular mammograms is imperative, but Queensland women need to prioritise their health and get familiar with their breasts in-between screenings too.

“If you notice any changes, don’t wait for the next mammogram – being breast aware could save your life.”

Interval-detected breast cancers include fastgrowing tumours that emerge and grow rapidly between two scheduled screenings, and others that aren’t detected by mammography.

“Around 80% of all interval tumours are aggressive and fast-growing, a factor that accounts for poorer survival rates,” Ms Clift said.

“We recommend that women continue to participate in routine screening but carefully monitor their breast health between screenings.

Cancer Council Queensland recommends women aged 50-74 have a mammogram every two years through BreastScreen Queensland. Women at a high risk or with a family history should discuss their screening options with a GP. Welcome to chilly July!

I have noticed a number of smoke stacks on my trips around the area this week. With the stunning winter views with crystal clear air, it’s a perfect time to be walking the tracks and mountains and this is reflected in the increased visitor numbers we have had through the centre of late.

Weekends have seen us needing extra volunteers on duty to cope, which is wonderful news for the local economy.

It has been a very diverse month in the centre as we have hosted the Leader of the Opposition, Lawrence Springborg and MP, Andrew Powell in a meet and greet session. Sunshine Coast Destination CEO, Simon Ambrose, along with 40 volunteers from the Information Centre, Neighbourhood Centre and representatives from the Chamber of Commerce got together to welcome and chat with the politicians.

In other news, our volunteers have been out and about with a visit to a local pottery - Fried Mudd where we managed to make the odd frog and learn just what you can do in a day’s workshop.

We have also visited the LARC, an amphibious vehicle based at Caloundra for a trip up the Pumicestone Passage.

These visits allow us to learn firsthand about tourism experiences in the region and represent the area in an informed and interesting way.

The Chinese fable involves a dying Emperor and his caged nightingale. In this modern film, set in modern China, grandfather Zhu Zhu Gen has made a promise to his dying wife, that he will take his own caged nightingale back to its home village and release it.

The odd-couple road movie teams Zhu Zhu Gen with increasingly relaxed granddaughter Xin Yi Yang in a quest to find release on several levels. The caged nightingale becomes a charming metaphor, with its own decisions to make, based on love.

You Said It Turner Park upgrades

I have good news for anyone concerned about the issues raised about Turner Park by the letter-writer in GC&M News, who suggested that council might not have the money to upgrade the playground for five years.

Thankfully, that is not the case. Planning of a playground upgrade is funded for this financial year, with money allocated in next year’s budget to start work on the ground (of course subject to approval in the next budget). I am confident the park will receive the funding it needs to fulfil its potential. The letter-writer also questioned why council had chosen to invest in a new entrance to the park before a major renewal of the park itself.

The key reason is that unfortunately, as numerous residents have made me aware, the park is ‘hidden’ and had begun to developed a reputation for being a ‘hang-out’ for a few people who have engaged in anti-social behaviour including the burning down of one of the shade structures some time ago.

Council has assessed how to best deal with problems like this and has developed a strategy to address the issue.

A major part of this strategy of increasing visibility and accessibility to the park is so that it is less isolated and has better ‘natural surveillance’ from the surrounding community.

The new Turner Street entrance will begin to implement this by creating much better recognition of the park, improved sight lines into the park and an entry that is much more inviting.

The new entrance will also extend the great look and feel of Simpson Street across into Turner Street and its parklands and will contribute to a more pleasurable walk between the town centre and the park, which we can all enjoy. Once it’s finished, I encourage residents to re-discover our ‘hidden gem’ one that I’m determined will become an exceptional family friendly district park in the near future.

NBN at Peachester

A meeting was held on Saturday in Peachester regarding the NBN facility. We were presented with a few opinions and facts on the microwave towers which NBN refers to as wireless facilities.

A major concern for us (Blaiks) is the claim that years ago Telstra had considered the same site as is now proposed on Old Peachester Road.

The supposed reason Telstra scrapped the idea was due to the high fire risk especially after the 1994 fires that swept through the area.

I would like to know how does someone find this information and present it as a really sound reason for objection to the proposed tower?

Has this knowledge been lost over the years or ignored for convenience?

Apart from some emotive concepts surrounding microwave technology, there were some very sound proposals. One of the presenters has come up with an alternative site for a tower that is 450 metres from the nearest house, another idea was at a similar cost it would be easier to place nodes around the township, thus providing wire to the node and ensuring a greater coverage within the community.

Conspiracy theories abounded and a general sense of hopelessness pervaded the group. There now also seems to be a division from within the opposition ranks.

The Maleny group was well represented and I was unable to ascertain the exact positioning of each player / presenter and their self-interests.

Those present were encouraged to contact Glasshouse Country and Maleny News as a means of accessing information from NBN/pollies and other influential people.

Where are our traffic lights?

Remember one week before our last State Elections when our State Member informed us that our traffic lights at the intersection of Reed Street and Steve Irwin Way at Glass House Mountains would go ahead? It seems that as he wasn’t on the winning side that we are still waiting for this to happen? It was quite possible that the lights may have even been the reason he received some of those votes that finally got him back in. He certainly has been quiet and our intersection is still void of traffic lights.

Our local council elections are approaching very quickly, I am hoping we have a candidate or two interested in running and doing something that will assist Glass House Mountains.

I have not seen any new footpaths, drainage or proper action when repairing local streets.

When will our council wake up that sealer does not suffice where we have dog trailers and other heavy transport using our roads? Being a rate payer, I am not interested in what is happening in Maroochydore or Caloundra for that matter.

My interest is where I live and my local councillor does not do much for our area that I can see.

Great event

On Sunday, July 5 we attended 'Muscle on the Mountain' car show in Maleny. Wow, what a great day! Although the event is only five years old, there were more than 700 cars entered.

This was our first visit and definitely won't be the last. It was very well organised, the food was beautiful and very affordable, great live and recorded music played non-stop, and all for a gold coin entry fee!

And all monies go to a wonderful cause, dear to most of us...prostate cancer.

We have been to many car shows over the years, and we both agreed that this was the best, in every way. Our congratulations go out to the organisers on a job very well done.

Get in the Game funding continues

The LNP Government had committed $68 million for the state-wide ‘Get in the Game’ funding program and up until now, Labor had been refusing to follow through with the funding. I’m pleased to say that local clubs in Glass House can breathe a sigh of relief after the Labor Government has listened to the LNP and guaranteed funding for another three years. I met with so many groups who successfully received funding through this program over the past three years so I know how much it is valued by our community.

Out and About

With Parliament on its annual winter break, I have had plenty of time to catch up on local activities and attend many community events. I have been posting each week on my website some of the events I have been attending which include, a visit to the Caboolture Montessori State School to celebrate World Environment Day, a presentation of old war telegrams to the Maleny RSL, attended all four shows that overlap with the Glass House boundaries, participated in the Friends of Bankfoot House AGM and more recently attended the 20th anniversary celebrations of Tony and Jane who own Art on Cairncross in Maleny. We have such an amazing community, and when I get to spend time enjoying the many and varied events held throughout the Glass House electorate, I am reminded of how lucky we are to call this place home.

I know it can be hard for people to visit me during the week and with my office located in Maleny the distance can also sometimes pose a problem for people. For this reason I am holding several Saturday mobile offices to see whether this makes it easier for locals to get in touch with me.

Domestic violence disclosure scheme - Your right to know

The LNP was very pleased to table an exposure draft Bill in Parliament on May 21 that provides for a domestic violence and sexual offence disclosure scheme which would be modeled off the UK’s Clare’s Law disclosure scheme.

As at the start of May this year, 34 women have been killed across Australia as a result of domestic violence.

It is unfathomable that these lives were lost from this insidious crime happening in our homes.

This type of disclosure scheme gives people the right to ask police about any individual who they are in an intimate relationship with, if there is concern that abuse is taking place.

It also gives a third party, such as a parent, friend or neighbor the ‘Right to Ask’ on behalf of a person if they also hold concerns.

Police would also have the ability under ‘Right to Know’ provisions to inform a potential victim of the risk posed because of the criminal past of the person they are in a relationship with.

Clare’s Law was initially set up in the United Kingdom after a woman named Clare Wood was murdered by her former partner.

In the course of the investigation, it was discovered he had a violent past that had it been known by the victim or her family, may have saved her life.

This is a scheme that gives access to vital information about someone’s violent past and crimes, and we believe that having that information, could potentially save lives.

This is definitely something that should be looked at in Queensland and that is why we are now consulting with you on your views of such a scheme in our state.

Beetroot basics

The humble beetroot is a good source of potassium, calcium and vitamin A. It contains no fat, few calories, lots of fibre, has a low GI index and is rich in antioxidants, making beetroot a pretty good healthy vegetable. But contrary to popular belief, they are not high in iron.

Some even claim the natural red-colouring in beetroot is a cancer-fighting agent, and beetroot has been used in Europe for many years as a treatment for cancer.

Other claims include helping to stop cholesterol from clogging the arteries, protecting against high blood pressure and fighting Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Seedlings can be planted now and they’ll be ready to start picking in 10-12 weeks.

They need a sunny spot in the veggie patch, and like some fertiliser when first planted – blood and bone is great.

Amazingly, the early Romans ate only the leaves. These can be lightly cooked in simmering water or steamed. They can also be added to a salad as a colourful leafy green.

Beetroot is a very versatile vegetable as it can be served cooked and raw – steamed, boiled, baked or grated.

They can be either globe-shaped or long and similar to parsnips.

Some of the newer beetroots are gold, white or red and white striped. We usually see them about the size of a tennis ball, but picked the size of a golf ball, they are very sweet.

They are available most of the year, but the peak season is now until the end of Spring.

And once you start to grow your own fresh beetroot, you’ll never go back to the canned varieties ever again.

Hakea florulenta

The two species of Hakea most commonly seen in the local area are probably better known for their hard, woody seed capsules, than for their flowers.

However, both have attractive creamy flowers which are often overlooked, because the woody fruit or seed capsules are so prolific.

Hakea florulenta is a slender shrub which grows to approximately three metres and is found on sandy or shallow stony soils. The elliptical leaves are light or grey green with lateral veins.

The creamy white flowers are arranged in clusters around slightly hairy stalks and are followed after a lengthy period by the hard, spotty and warty fruit. These require considerable heat to open and release the two winged seeds.

Hakeas are one of the many Australian native plant species that are well adapted to recovery from fire. Seed germination is instigated by the extreme heat and plants resprout from an underground lignotuber.

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship My wife Jenny and I recently had a short holiday in Mackay. We stayed with Helen, our youngest daughter and her growing family. As always, it is a joy to see one’s children growing and making their way in the world. One feels proud of their achievements and we can also enjoy the blessing of grandchildren. It is however unsettling, at least for Jenny and I, to be so far from our growing families, but they have to move where jobs are available. There are many occasions when we simply want to be nearer so that we can offer support at special times like pregnancies, a sick baby etc.

While visiting, we had a couple of lovely meals and conversations with new friends (Ian and Robyn) that Helen’s family have made.

Interestingly, these ‘new’ friends for Helen both attended Jenny and my wedding 39 years ago.

Ian is the son of the man who was the Church Warden for Jenny’s father when he was the

I have come home from my holiday very grateful to God for having a great family. I am also deeply grateful to God for the family of the Church.

This Church family is not just empty words of shallow rhetoric preached from a pulpit. The Church introduces people, makes relationships that are strong, forged in love, care and service, united in worship. Ian and Robbie hugged us and assured us that they will care for Helen and her family especially during this pregnancy. We have returned home much relieved and grateful to God. Our gratitude is amplified by the joy we experienced in attending Church with our family of blood ties and also our family of spiritual ties.

The Church is a practical expression of God’s love for us and of our love for each other.

I encourage you to give Church a go if you don’t already attend. If you do and you find fault with it, well that is the reality of a gathering of people – flaws and faults abound – yet in God we forgive, even as we are forgiven. If you attend and find happiness in belonging, then alleluia!

Super strawberry: round 2 A slow week in the Super Strawberry competition – only one entry in Round 2, and that was another last-minute effort! This round was almost a no-show, but thanks to Gowinta Farms who saved the day, and won the round, with an entry weighing 145 grams.

Remember, there is a six-pack from Beerwah Hotel waiting for the winning grower each week, so don't let that go to waste! And it is important to note that the competition is not only for strawberry farmers – home gardeners can enter as well, and in fact some years ago one of the champion strawberries was grown by a keen gardener.

Yet many are not aware that there is a township named Glass House Mountains, let alone that there is a bowls club there. So as our bowlers win and make known who we are, the more will come to know of the township of Glass House Mountains.

Saturday, July 11 - Men’s Pennant Bowls: Round 1 for Division 1 with Glass House playing Bribie Island at Bribie. Glass House won 63 to 62. In Round 2 Division 4 played Bongaree at Bongaree.

Bongaree won 51 to 28. In Round 2 Division 5 Glass House played Beachmere at home. Glass House won 52 to 39.

Entries can be brought in to Coochin Creek Fruitgrowers’ Co-op at any time during the week, and Round 3 closes on Friday, July 17 at 4.00pm.

There are eight rounds leading up to the Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival on Saturday, August 22, and the 2015 Super Strawberry Champion will be announced at the sports day.

NTP’s were won by Dianne Flint No 2, Mavis Brimelow No 5,Josie Thistlewaite No 16, and Mavis Brimelow No 18. The Ball Rundown went to 29 pts.

Next Thursday, July 16, is the 27 Holes Ladies Foursomes Championships sponsored by Beerwah Jewellers.

A Single Stableford competition will be held in conjunction for those not competing in the Championships. The Ladies welcome new members, beginners and visitors.
