Especially if that job is serving up a decent coffee.

But that’s exactly the situation the hospitality sector finds itself in as it becomes the frontline in a new wave of hostility.

In this edition Shotgun Espresso owner Kelly Robson speaks out about the almost impossible situation she faces each day as she tries to comply with check-in mandates with an increasingly pandemic-weary and stressed out public.

For a time check-ins played a role as the government pursued suppression and ‘donut day’ strategies. But from December 17 that rhetoric changed to ‘let’s learn to live with Covid’.

That is, however unless you go to a cafe. Then you’re following the same rules as we have for the past two years.

But if contact tracing isn’t a thing, if the majority of the population is vaccinated, if the wave has passed and if worst case scenarios never actually happened, then why are cafes still being singled out?

At some point this will have to change, but until then cafes are forced to forge on with no compensation or acknowledgment of the stress they are under. Perhaps this should serves as a good reminder at the very least to be kind to others, especially your barista.

Check-in mandates cause misery for cafes

By Mitch Gaynor A HINTERLAND hospitality veteran has revealed the daily verbal and physical abuse she has endured because her small business is forced to comply with state government-mandated check-in rules.

Shotgun Espresso owner Kelly Robson who has lost staff and significant revenue in the past two years said the situation was now “untenable”.

The hospitality sector is one of only a few industries where check-in and vaccination verification rules still apply.

But Kelly said the messaging was confusing and raised stress levels for people who thought that check-ins were behind us.

“Since the 17th December this has been a nightmare. It can only be described as abuse from our Government. We have been utterly neglected,” the Maleny café owner said.

Kelly is not anti-vaccination, but is urging an even playing field for all business.

She said her ask of the Government was simple: “Stop policing us and remove the scanning.”

“To only single us out, but not a supermarket, bank or hotel, where you can crowd in, is just wrong.”

“It’s become a battlefield, it’s ridiculous. And worse, it’s not doing anything.”

Kelly said her sector was essentially being used by the Government to ensure the unvaccinated stayed away from public places.

“Our sector is being used against our wishes and at our expense, it’s our shout, so the government can punish those who choose not to be vaccinated,” she said.

“You cannot tell us otherwise. That data is not being used by the scan ins.

So what is the point? That’s such a next level of abuse.”

Glass House state MP Andrew Powell said the situation for the hospitality sector was unacceptable.

“The stress and strain, the abuse, that café owners and staff have had to bear is unreasonable,” he said.

“It’s wrong. Sure, other states had similar restrictions, but they set end dates (or vaccination targets) well in advance so business owners could plan for the future. And other states have provided support packages to impacted businesses.”

Mr Powell said he was pro vaccination and encouraged people to be vaccinated, but added he understood and respected that for some this is medically not possible and for others not desirable.

“With more than 90% of the Queensland population double vaxxed, I have struggled to understand why the Palaszczuk Government continues to single out our pubs, clubs, cafes and wedding venues when it comes to vaccination restrictions and Check-in Apps,” he said.

“We have no medical explanation why they are being singled out.”

Mr Powell said he was continuing to advocate for small and family businesses including targeted grants, sick leave and electricity or water rebates.

“For many businesses who’ve been fighting for two years to stay afloat, a support package will be the difference between whether they survive or not.”

A spokesperson for the Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said no abuse is acceptable and “staff should call police as the commissioner has advised”.

Asked if the Government was considering scrapping the demand on the hospitality sector, he said: “Measures like these have helped Queensland manage the current outbreak much better than initially projected encouraging us to be cautiously optimistic that the peak of the wave has passed and cases are trending down.”

Ms Robson said the suggestion to contact police meant the Premier had not “grasp” on what the mandate looked like on the ground.

“I do not have the time nor the means to have the police on speed dial to deal with the outright verbal/physical abuse to the constant defiance and passive aggressive abuse from people,” she said.

There was no response from the Premier’s office to questions about financial compensation for businesses.

The 2022 Maleny Wood Expo cancelled BARUNG Landcare announced that with “much disappointment” the expo would be cancelled due to concerns about COVID and the health and wellbeing of the local community.

“We and our exhibitors have been actively planning this year’s expo since September 2021. Things had looked very promising up to December and we genuinely looked forward to a bumper event to reignite community enthusiasm, and a wonderful expo experience,” Barung’s Ian McMaster wrote in a statement.

“However, the rapid emergence of the omicron variant of COVID-19 across Queensland and the country, has forced us to seriously rethink our plans.”

“The factors that are crucial to us are the health and wellbeing of the local community, the support and ability of our exhibitors and visitors to participate, and our capacity to keep faith with our visitors by providing an outstanding event.”

Many people approved of the decision, saying it was common sense in the face of the pandemic.

“This must be disappointing given all the work in planning. It would have been great to get back there in 2022 but we need to be safe so I totally agree with the decision,” Rod Iffinger wrote on Facebook.

“Fingers crossed that 2023 will see the world back to normal and we will be back in Maleny.”

Mr McMaster wrote that with only eight weeks until the expo, a decision had to be made about whether it was safe and viable to continue.

“Unfortunately we are not confident at this point that we can deliver on these three crucial factors,” he wrote.

The expo was also cancelled in 2021 due to worldwide lockdowns caused by the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Speed limit reduced along Steve Irwin Way

SPEED limits along a stretch of Steve Irwin Way are being intermittently reduced to 40km/hr as work ramps up on the long-awaited upgrade.

Motorists noted that speed limits had been dropped along sections of the upgrade in February.

Transport and Main Roads told GC&M News that this was normal practice and that reductions may also be required on weekends during the upgrade.

Works requiring lane closures will occur at night, with anticipated delays of up to five minutes for commuters.

“The project team will endeavour to undertake works during the day as much as possible but some works requiring lane closures will occur at night when traffic volumes are lowest,” a TMR spokesman said.

“Traffic control will assist motorists and the anticipated delays will be up to five minutes.”

While there is some short-term pain, the gain is expected to be well-received with three right turn lanes to be installed in the project area and traffic lights at Australia Zoo to reduce the risk of accidents.

Social housing a pipe dream Residents rally council to help save nature strip against

By Mitch Gaynor CONCERNING new figures show not one new social housing dwelling has been built across the Glass House electorate in the past four years.

The region had just 46 social housing dwellings with a total of 106 bedrooms in 2018 and new data showed that number had not changed in 2021.

Glass House state MP, Andrew Powell, said housing affordability had disappeared in the electorate because of regional and town planning restrictions, Covid-19, interstate migration and the short-term accommodation boom.

“But for our most vulnerable, those who depend on the Government for a roof over their heads, there is only one reason – the failures of the Palaszczuk Labor Government,” he said.

“Five years ago, we were told they were investing $2 billion over 10 years to build social housing across the state.

Housing Minister Leeanne Enoch’s office did not respond to calls.

Local Greens spokesman Andrew McLean said the government needed to consider collaborative housing as a way to reduce worsening affordability. “Let’s have a hard look at collaborative housing,” he said. “These are really important solutions.”

Not-for-profit housing group, Smart Living Society, was urging governments to open up more land for social housing development.

“A lot of people who deserve to live here can’t afford it and are being pushed out,” the group’s Paulette Steele said.

MALENY residents are seeking urgent amendments to a new development that could see the removal of a 200-metre long nature corridor as well as road widening and increased traffic on a quiet street.

Sunshine Coast Council last week approved an application by BJ Pty Ltd to develop 34 blocks along Plant Street and Bridge Creek Rd. The development was code assessable meaning it did not require public submissions.

Nearly 50 residents turned out at the proposed development site on Saturday, February 12, to sign a petition objecting to the approval and hear the thoughts of local councillor Winston Johnston.

The development approval along Bridge Creek Rd consists of 10 lots ranging up to 15000sqm.

But if developed the road would have to be widened and driveways installed, which would likely require the removal of the nature corridor.

Local resident Clive Waring said the community was not objecting to the development - which had undertaken appropriate steps to receive code assessable approval - but that the approval amounted to “environmental destruction” of the nature corridor.

“We do object to another environmental destruction of an area that is home to wallabies, owls, carpet pythons, echidnas, bandicoots, and a range of birds.”

Councillor Winston Johnston said the fact it was code assessable meant it would be difficult to amend because there was no public objection period or appeal rights. “I told (the council) in writing and verbally that the subdivision proposal is not acceptable to the residents. And because of the tree planting it is not accessible,” Cr Johnston said.

Cr Johnston said he would contact the Planning Department to “make the strong community objection really clear”, in the hope of securing amendments.

Not just the koala that’s endangered, g , it’s the habitat

By Mitch Gaynor THE Federal Government is paying “lip service” to the issue of koala protection and regeneration, with multiple organisations critical of both a $50 million protection fund and the beloved animal’s status upgrade to ‘endangered’.

Visiting Australia Zoo recently, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the government would invest $50 million to ‘boost the longterm protection and recovery efforts for koalas’.

“Koalas are one of Australia’s most loved and best recognised icons, both here at home and across the world, and we are committed to protecting them for generations to come,” Mr Morrison said.

Just days later the animal’s status was upgraded from ‘vulnerable’ to ‘endangered’ in Queensland, News South Wales and the ACT. That move was labelled a “token gesture” by the Australian Koala Foundation.

Koala protection groups including Koala Action Inc. president Vanda Grabowski said the funding announcement lacked meaningful detail and nothing would improve without increasing habitat.

“Stop clearing. I’ve been saying the same thing since 1993. Stop clearing,” she said.

“That $50 million is meant to go across all states that have koalas. When you break that down it’s not much money to divvy up.”

The Australian Koala Foundation (AKF) shared a

similar sentiment and e extended an invitation to Mr Morrison to meet to discuss M best b measures to protect koalas. k “Posing with a cuddly K Koala and announcing a big chunk of money is u undeniably a vote winner,” A Chair Deborah Tabart AKF O said.

“This change in status is to little, too late,” she said. too “The Federal Government may be offering our koalas a nice new word, but behind all the photo opportunities and political rhetoric they continue to approve the destruction of koala habitat.

“If the clearing of koala habitat continues, a further status change is imminent – from ‘endangered’ to ‘extinct’.”

She said if the Federal Government is serious about saving the species, the $50 million should go to proper mapping to know where the Koalas are or could be.

“For over three decades, AKF has engaged the very best scientific minds to develop detailed habitat mapping, population data and carefully considered solutions to save the koala,” she said.

Maleny earns top gong for rolling out the welcome mat WITH international borders set to reopen next week, tourists looking to visit Queensland have an even better reason to add the hinterland to their bucket list.

Maleny has just been named the most welcoming town in the country according to a poll of millions of visitors. It is the second year running it has taken out the top prize in the booking.com survey, with Montville coming in at ninth most welcoming town.

Hinterland Tourism’s Kerry Brown said the key to Maleny’s ongoing allure was that so many businesses are locally owned and operated.

“You talk to the businesses and they become your friends,” she said.

“They get to know the people who come back. The same people who get married here, have their first anniversary, come back with their first baby.”

“There is repeat business and there is a human connection.

“You can’t buy that genuine happiness when the owner meets you at the door.”

The acknowledgment by booking.com comes after the region was polled as the most loved destination in the world. The Tourism Sentiment poll was based on 1.8 billion ‘content pieces’ based on people’s sentiments about places.

Swim club goes from strength-to-strength

By Mitch Gaynor BEERWAH Swim Club has a new coach and personal bests are becoming the new norm as a host of swimmers prepare to head to Brisbane for the State Sprint Championships.

The club recruited former New Zealand national swimmer Danelle Sealey in November and has gone from strength-to-strength in just a few short months.

Out of a club of about 43 swimmers, nine have qualified for the state sprints, with ith five set for the national prep meet and nearly 20 to swim at the Wide Bay Championships.

Danelle said she was proud of what the club had achieved, with up and comers Ava Scott, 12, smashing her 200 individual medley by 21 seconds and Grace Pearson, 13, beating her 800 freestyle PB by 17 seconds.

“The Swimfit family, parents and swimmers have all been very welcoming and we are all enjoying seeing the massive PBs the swimmers are achieving already,” Danelle said Grace said she loved swimming at the club.

“I’ve been doing it all my life and really enjoy it,” she said.

“But I’m mostly excited because my mum when she was my age didn’t qualify, but I have,” Ruby said.

Danelle has had a lifelong association at a high level with swimming including coaching senior competitive swimmers, surf lifesaving swimmers and

triathletes while living in New Zealand. “Over 30 of my swimmers qualified for Junior/Senior State National Competitions in the first year coming home with many loved medals,” she said.

“I then started up my own swim school teaching school age to mini squads before relocating with my family to Australia.

After some years away from swimming due to family commitments, Danelle has dived back in as head coach at Swimfit Beerwah; Danelle trains the Bronze, Silver, Gold squads, Masters and adult learn to swim classes.

New chamber president set to develop the ties that bind

By Mitch Gaynor A PHILOSOPHY of regeneration and sustainability instilled over more than 30 years in the native plant industry will play a key role for new Maleny Chamber of Commerce president Spencer Shaw.

Spencer is returning to the chair after a few year’s hiatus and as the local business community picks up the pieces from the Covid pandemic.

The co-owner of Forest Heart Nursery and BrushTurkey Enterprises with wife Karen, said he will be focused on developing ideas and relationships that he hopes will ultimately create positive outcomes for both business and community.

But Spencer said he was acutely aware of the challenges facing the business community.

“I think it’s very important now to be strengthening these community ties and associations especially off the back of Covid,” he said.

“A concern has been the division of the community through the pandemic.”

He said the opportunities to invite community and business groups together were exciting.

“If we’re going to have a vibrant democracy anywhere it’s up here,” he said.

The town’s main street might also be in the spotlight.

“One of the things I’ve been looking at is the streetscape and whether there’s the opportunity to expand the offering in the main street,” he said.

UPDATE Well, it’s been a few years since I last penned you an update from Maleny Commerce, because yes, I’m the déjà vu president and back at the helm as of early February. It’s been a difficult time for small business and our community, but being passionate about our little town, its people, its environment and of course its businesses, I look forward to working with you all over the coming year.

Just to recap, Maleny Commerce is a volunteer organisation whose focus of operations is networking, advocacy and promotion of the great businesses that are at the heart of the success story that is Maleny. Community is also a key consideration and focus for me when it comes to doing business in Maleny and we’ll also be working to strengthen our diverse community relationships and promoting the value of the healthy environment we live in.

Bonyi art exhibition is all about the yarning

By Mitch Gaynor A NEW art exhibition featuring local Indigenous artists celebrating bonyi culture was officially opened in Maleny on February 12.

Bonyi: Living Culture is a two-month series of events at art space Munnimbah-dja, above Forest Heart Nursery.

The event gathers together past and contemporary bonyi stories, through the creative works of Aunty Beverly Hand, BJ Murphy, Jo-Anne Driessens, Shannon Brett, Libby Harward, Dominique Chen and Kieron Anderson.

Co-curators Libby and Dominique described the exhibition as “testimonyy to the ongoing and regenerative connection of our people to the bonyi,, our culture and each other”. s.

“Living culture is not static moments.

It’s transformative and relational,” Dominique told GC&M News.

“This program is about the revitalisation and activation of that culture and this active public program m is about sharing this knowledge.”

The art space itself has been curated with bonyi-inspired works, including photography, drawings, prints and installations from artists including Jason Murphy, Cholena Hughs and Karen Shaw.

It is complemented by a strong public program across February and March including ferments and bonyi shucking and roasting. Other events include kids and adult printmaking, clapstick making and yarning circles.

Family mourn loss of community stalwart THE hinterland community is mourning the passing of former longtime Bank of Queensland Beerwah Owner Manager Jeff Willis.

The father of Scott, Jordan and Sarah, grandfather of Zoe and Mia and husband to Debbie has been remembered as a fantastic dad, husband, car lover and community stalwart.

Sons Scott and Jordan said their dad was a man with a terrific wit and boundless energy for his family.

“Dad never ceased to amaze with all of the incredible thoughts and ideas in his head, and the beauty and emotions that he proudly showed from his heart,” Scott said.

Jordan said a lifetime of memories included the story of chasing bank robbers and bringing home undrivable cars to refurbish.

“Not only did he chase down a bank robber who had just held him at gunpoint, he bravely brought home a fire damaged rolling shell of a Corvette and showed it to our mum,” he said.

“Our dad was a man of great character, full of wit, love, and kindness.

“After spending 20 years as part of our corporate network he opened the Beerwah branch with Debbie in 2003.

“Together, they built the branch into a successful owner-managed business before stepping away in 2018 in readiness for retirement.”

Jeff passed away on January 14 following a period of ill health.

Twinnies success to help injured seabirds Plant a tree and honour the Queen TWINNIES Pelican and Seabird Rescue are thrilled to have received a $10,000 state grant, to assist them in continuing their work helping sick and injured pelicans and seabirds at their Landsborough rescue and rehabilitation centre.

Twins Bridgette and Paula Powers received the cheque from Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Member for Caloundra Jason Hunt, with the Premier sharing she was impressed to have seen the twins on Australian Story last year, with their appearance on the show having “served to shine a new light on their long-running work”.

“Their dedication and passion as wildlife conservationists is truly admirable, and their track record of

voluntary work over so many years deserves our backing,” the Premier said.

“Our $10,000 contribution will hopefully inspire others to also support them and their mum Helen to help meet their running costs.”

Bridgette said the grant could not have come at a better time with the funding to go towards maintenance work on their physiotherapy pool and ongoing facility costs.

“We were overwhelmed by the visit and, of course, the grant,” Bridgette said.

“Our physio pool is in need of a new pump to get it back up and running to help rehabilitate our birds and this grant really could not have come at a better time.”

COMMUNITY organisations will have the opportunity to access funding to plant trees as part of celebrations to honour Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II and her Platinum Jubilee.

Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace welcomed the opportunity for local community groups to play a part in the nationwide ‘Planting Trees for The Queen’s Jubilee Program’.

“Eligible groups and organisations in Fisher here on the Sunshine Coast are invited to contact my office to discuss potential projects for nomination for an Australian Government grant to plant trees in honour of the legacy of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II and her 70 years of service to Australia and the Commonwealth,” Mr Wallace said.

“Planting regionally-appropriate species that enhance the tree canopy will help preserve the unique Sunshine Coast environment and protect the natural paradise that we are so fortunate to live in.

Grants from $2,500 to $20,000 will be available to a broad range of organisations with each federal electorate eligible to receive up to $100,000 for up to ten projects.

To be considered, projects must

include formal commemorative events in 2022 to mark the Jubilee, plantings of regionally appropriate tree species, and installation of commemorative signage or plaques.

Travelling Jackaroo receives local hero award

Students still connecting PEACHESTER State School Students have brightened up the day of local aged care residents with some COVID-friendly creativity.

While the virus restricted access for many visitors in aged care, some students from Peachester School used their extra time at school last week to make their own paper and turn it into home-made cards.

They then wrote letters and sent them to ten aged care residents on the Sunshine Coast.

The residents received a letter and photo of the children and teachers who had made the cards.

One of the residents reported to his wife that “The card made his day”.

ASK Maleny local Sam Hughes why he would choose to drive around Australia in a 1957 Chamberlain 9G Tractor called ‘Slim’, and the answer is easy.

“I like helping people,” he said.

Sam set off on his trek in March last year in the bright orange trailer to raise money for the Royal Flying Doctors Service (RFDS) and Dolly’s Dream.

That journey by Sam, otherwise known as the ‘Travelling Jackaroo’ has now seen him honoured as a 2021 Queensland RFDS Local Hero Award winner. The awards recognise Queenslanders who have donated their time and energy to keeping the flying doctors flying.

Along with the significant money raised, Sam said the trip allowed him to raise a huge level of awareness about mental health.

“I’m a quarter way, statistically, through life so might as well make the most of it and help as many people as

you can,” he said, adding “ ‘cause then you’ll be dust.”

“I love meeting people and hearing their stories.

“People see that [Slim] and smile and laugh, and when people smile they start talking, and it starts a conversation about mental health.”

There’s no missing Sam along his travels, with his decked out trailer now featuring a small RFDS aircraft replica proudly on top. His travels have thus far led him to Darwin, having met plenty of people and garnered quite the following along the way.

RDFS key relationship manager Heather Stott said that Sam’s following is phenomenal.

“I think what Sam is doing is wonderful, everything about it,” said Heather.

if you’re selling your property, it must have compliant smoke alarms installed prior to settlement.

If it does not, the buyer can seek an adjustment of the settlement price to rectify the issue, but there is no right to terminate the contract.

“So, the result here is simple, either ensure your property is fire alarm compliant prior to placing it on the market, or sellers can expect to pay for it to become fire alarm compliant at settlement,” Easton Lawyers said.

And while it is now standard for buyers to pay a deposit by direct debit under the new REIQ residential contract, when you pay by direct debit you’re deemed to have paid the deposit on the day you instruct your bank to pay the funds, and this will be considered as “paid on time”.

But Easton Lawyers said the buyer is not off the hook.

“They must also provide evidence confirming the payment was made, otherwise, the seller may terminate the contract,” the firm said.

“So, obtaining and keeping those email or SMS receipts from your financial institution has become vital in this otherwise electronic age.”

LOCAL MALENY GROUP ADVOCATE FOR BETTER INTERNET SINCE its establishment in 2019 Maleny Forums has initiated a range of working groups, including Pathways Working Group and Waste Action Maleny. COVID caution has meant that most planned meetings have been delayed.

NBN Working Group continues to monitor the range of issues and found that on the political front, Labor has promised that an additional 660,000 regional premises would receive access to optical fibre if elected. This would include Maleny and surrounding districts that missed out on the NBN rollout.

Regarding ongoing problems with the internet experienced by many residents of Maleny and surrounds, thousands of regional users with satellite have ditched NBN and are turning to US company Starlink for their internet.

It is unfortunate that they have had to resort to this because Starlink costs twice as much as NBN - which they have already paid through their taxes.

The group continues to advocate for effective internet coverage, as promised by the Federal government. RULES demanding buyers and sellers stick to their contractual obligations by a strict deadline have been relaxed as part of a suite of changes affecting property transactions in Queensland.

The three most significant changes to the Real Estate Institute of Queensland residential contracts includes amending the ‘time is of the essence’ rule that meant all obligations had to be met by 5pm on the due date.

The new changes allow buyers and sellers to obtain an extension of up to five days after settlement if they are unable to settle due to the inaction or delay of a financier.

“Moreover, there is no requirement to provide any evidence to support this request for an extension,” Beerwah law firm Easton Lawyers said.

“This fundamental change to the time is of the essence clause, has seen the Queensland legal community enter into quite a bit of debate, as ‘time is of the essence’ is a fundamental principle of conveyancing practice which has long been relied on.”

Another change is to smoke alarms.

Glass Mountains Post Office Contributed by Ron Gillinder THE first Cobb & Co coaches departed from Brisbane and Gympie on 12 November, 1868. They carried both passengers and mail.

After a seven hour journey, the coach from Brisbane stopped for the midday meal and a change of horses at Bankfoot House in the ‘Glass Mountains’. The coach from Gympie had a similar stop on the following day (day two).

Owner of Bankfoot House, William Grigor, is recorded as the official Postmaster for ‘Glass Mountains’ from 1868 up until his death in 1907. Mail was left at Bankfoot House for posting and incoming mail distributed.

When the Caboolture to Mellum Creek (Landsborough) railway line was opened in February 1890, the railway quickly took over the mail contract.

William on horseback, took the mail lodged at Bankfoot House to the new Coonowrin railway station and picked up the mail for the district. The station was renamed ‘Glass House Station’ in 1894.

After William died in 1907 his daughter Clementina carried on the service until about 1910 when the post office agency was transferred to the railway station.

The station was again renamed in 1914 to Glass House Mountains Station.

By the end of 1936, the post office was incorporated into the new general store by Mr E Greaves, in the Glass House Mountains township.

Photo of the original Bankfoot House from 1868 which included the Post Office. There is a small hole in the centre of the front wall, near the centre verandah post. Mail to be posted was dropped into that opening.

This house was demolished in 1930 – you can see it is in a bad state of repair from this photo.

Yes, these can be recycled via the REDcycle soft plastic recycling program.

Before dropping them off, give the plastic bags a quick rinse and dry them off, and then cut the bags into pieces no bigger than A3 size (30cmX42cm).

Cutting the bags up is necessary so that the recycling equipment can process the plastic. Woolworths in Beerwah and Maleny are our local REDcycle drop-off points.

YOU Opening hearts and minds

ON the 26th of January my wife and I attended a Ceremony of Remembrance at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre gardens. It was a very moving and respectful ceremony acknowledging the dispossession of Australia’s Indigenous people.

What is sadly obviously in this country of ours is we do not know anywhere near enough about the First Nations peoples’ culture and history, let alone language. We do not know anything about the frontier conflicts that occurred from 26 January 1788, with the violence extending for decades and the discrimination and abuse continuing to this day.

The mood for discussion and change is building. Witness the marches around the country that now occur. Witness what is happening in places like Maleny. The silence from politicians is deafening.

I am part of the baby boomer brigade and I am ashamed that it is my generation in the main that chooses to ignore the truth. When you begin to understand the truth the solutions then become a lot easier. Why don’t we give it a go.

Farewell Lea and Brownie

GLASSHOUSE Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN) Inc. is sad to say farewell to Lea and Brownie. GMAN has been in existence for over three decades, and Lea and Brownie have been strong advocates for our organisation for well over half that time. On hearing of Lea and Brownie moving on, one of our members recently commented that it seemed they were not just about filling up space in the newspaper, rather, they were genuinely interested in presenting the diverse activities and views that make up our vibrant community.

Lea and Brownie always responded positively to any issues or activities for which our group sought assistance or public relations. Whether it was via a phone call, email or face to face meeting, either or both of them always made time to listen and offer whatever support they could.

Along with publicity promoting our regular native plant sales, and featuring a fortnightly GMAN ‘plant’ column in the GC&M News, Lea and Brownie supported us in projects such as the ‘Hands Off Halls Creek’ campaign (in conjunction with Sunshine Coast Environment Council); the public ‘Meet the Division One Candidates’ forum during Council elections when the thencandidate stepped down; and in calling for public participation in the establishment of our first ‘Koala Food Tree Plantation’, to name just a few.

Many will agree that with the onset of the pandemic, Lea and Brownie made a remarkable effort to continue publishing our local newspaper both in print and online. They consistently kept our community well informed, and while this must have been an extremely tough time for their business, they never faltered in their attentiveness to our region’s people and their endeavours. We wish you well Lea and Brownie, your presence and encouragement in our community will be sorely missed.

Some members of our society are scathingly critical of people who promote ivermectin as a preventative against coronavirus.

I wish these people would desist: I have yet to come across a single horse with coronavirus.

Re: Differing views

THE contrasting views of the readership of GC&M News raised some interesting points.

Peter Slade has a valid gripe about his “no junk mail” sign being ignored, however, stereotyping people and making assumptions about their level of education or intelligence because they have an opposing opinion to his does nothing to help his argument.

If we (the unvaccinated) struggled to read then some of us may not be able to express ourselves so eloquently in questioning the pro-vax propaganda and the scare campaign the government is behind.

Realistically, nobody is fully vaccinated so whether you have had three jabs or none is irrelevant.

Vaccinated people can still contract COVID and die just the same as someone who is unvaccinated.

People have died from adverse effects from taking the vaccine.

Why risk that, if the vaccine doesn’t protect you from anything anyway?

So why would anyone bother (unless they are among the many that have been bullied into it for the sake of retaining their employment)?

As for the argument from another writer who wrote “When the choice of a minority group has an adverse effect on the wider community, maybe that group should reconsider their position”.

I agree and propose that people who struggle with obesity should avoid eating fast food and drinking sugary drinks.

Too many health problems are related to lifestyle choices.

But maybe people with health problems related to “diseases of affluence” are not in the minority anymore. I would advise everybody to take government statistics or figures with a grain of salt. Politicians lie.

No law needed for love

I USED to be a Lutheran Pastor and I am a member of the Greens, so I have a unique perspective on the Religious Discrimination Bill.

Not once, as a pastor of the church, was I unable to say what I wanted to say. That may be because for me, Jesus embodied one thing - love. Every time Jesus opened his mouth there was compassion, love and understanding (unless you were a religious leader).

It’s not easy being human and some people, under the guise of religion, want to make life harder, especially for those who are different. A follower of Jesus should only have time for encouragement, love, and care. And who needs a law for this?

The Greens are also very nervous about any law making life harder for LGBTIQ+, young or old people, women or refugees; which this bill could easily do. We saw this in real time with Citipointe College. The two major parties, it seems to us, are playing with people lives to score political points.

This bill was a time-wasting distraction.

Let’s get back to more important issues like housing, dental in Medicare, climate, domestic violence and treaty for First Nations.

JOHN MCGRATH – TIME TO SHINE FOR BRISBANE & SURROUNDS It’s no surprise that for the fourth consecutive month, Brisbane has outshone the other East Coast capital cities and recorded the highest monthon-month median home value growth, according to new CoreLogic figures for the month of January.

It’s also the fourth consecutive month that the Sunshine State’s capital has recorded more than 2% growth. Regional Queensland, which incorporates the exceptionally strong markets of the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, has also recorded about 2% price growth since October as well.

The new year began very positively for Brisbane, with home values up 2.3% in January compared to Canberra 1.7%, Hobart 1.2%, Sydney 0.6% and Melbourne 0.2%.

As you can see, home values continue

to rise across the East Coast capitals but the rate of growth has slowed in Sydney and Melbourne, largely due to an increase in the number of homes for sale.

Conversely, supply is still very tight in Brisbane with stock on market currently 47% lower than the 5-year average for the city.

Brisbane and surrounds have been overdue for a strong run of price growth for a few years. Consider the lifestyle benefits – with possibly the best warm climate in Australia and pristine beaches and waterways everywhere – then look at the value on offer.

The median house price in Brisbane is $810,000 compared to Sydney $1,390,000, Canberra $1,032,000 and Melbourne $1,002,000. (As you’d expect, Hobart is much cheaper at $760,000.)

This price gap indicates there is potentially much more room for capital growth in Brisbane this year compared to the other East Coast capitals.

South-East Queensland will undoubtedly continue to benefit from pandemic trends – the most impactful being the now commonplace opportunity to work from home. When you can do that, you can essentially live anywhere and South-East Queensland allows buyers to upgrade their lifestyles while downgrading their mortgages. What a win-win.

Future drivers for capital growth are also very strong, including 10 years of preOlympics infrastructure projects ahead – not only in Brisbane but also on the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast where many events will be held – and increasing interest from overseas investors.

John McGrath And what about investment? Not only does the Brisbane and surrounds market offer great comparative affordability, but it also offers better rental returns than the other East Coast capitals.

If we focus on typical investment stock – apartments – gross yields in Brisbane are 4.8% compared to 4% in Hobart, 3.5% in Melbourne and 3% in Sydney (and they’re on par with Canberra at 4.9%), according to CoreLogic data.

BEERWAH Writers Group members were honoured when award-winning author Sarah Williams dropped in to give a talk about her background and how she became an author.

The Maleny romance novelist said she loves helping budding writers and is holding an “outline your novel’ challenge in March as well as launching a digital course on how to write a bestseller. She has published seven romance novels including two set in Maleny - The Dairy Farmer’s Daughter and Their Perfect Blend.

The Beerwah Writers Group celebrates its 16th anniversary this year, with organisers urging anyone interested in

writing in a friendly and non-judgmental setting to join the group.

Members travel from Maleny, Beerwah, Glasshouse Mountains, Buderim, Caloundra, Brisbane, and beyond.

It is an active group of local amateur and professional writers who meet to discuss aspects of writing and publishing. Our members love memoir, romance, fiction, travel, science fantasy, mystery and poetry. All genres welcome! The group meet on the second and fourth Friday of the month.

New members are welcome and encouraged; a yearly subscription of $5 applies.

ELECTED School camps cop “devastating blow”

I fully support the school camps industry (and the many suppliers that work with them) in their quest for a business support package as another industry teeters on the brink.

The decision to suspend school camps for a month without any meaningful economic and business support plan in place is a devastating blow for a vital industry that is so important to the education experience for Queensland kids and to our local economy.

I met with Shadow Education Minister Dr Christian Rowan and Andrew Grant of Queensland Conference and Camping Centres, based in Mapleton, on the Sunshine Coast last week to hear firsthand the impact on the camping and convention sector.

Dr Rowan said term one was traditionally the busiest time of year for school camps organisations as schools prepare for the year ahead.

“The economic and employment impacts on organisations like the QCCC cannot be underestimated,” Dr Rowan said.

“School camps are such an important experience for kids and we cannot afford for them to go under.”

Garden organics bin ready to roll From July 2022, councils garden organics bin collection service is expanding to households across the Sunshine Coast who don’t currently use the service. It’s an easy and convenient way to dispose of your lawn clippings, weeds, leaves and other organic garden materials. Each fortnight, the lime green lid bin will be emptied by council, diverted away from landfill and mulched ready to be reused. The garden organics bin service is expected to be about $35 per year for a 240L bin and is the first step on our journey to a future Food Organics and Garden Organics (aka FOGO) collection service.

If you already have a garden organics bin your annual fees will reduce to the new rate. Residents can expect mailout correspondence with links to council’s website for further information and answers to frequently asked questions.

Wishlist Centre one step closer for families FOR the families of loved ones seeking treatment at Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH), affordable accommodation and complementary therapies is one step closer, with the construction of the Australian-first facility, Wishlist Centre, powering ahead.

Wishlist Centre, which is located directly opposite the hospital on the corner of Eccles Boulevard and Bright Place, Birtinya, will provide 18 transitionary care accommodation rooms to support patients and their families whilst having ongoing treatment at SCUH, as well as a space for cancer support services, a low or no-cost GP service, youth mental health programs and more.

Works are ramping up, with the Birtinya construction site abuzz with trades as they look to complete

installation of the build’s level three suspended slab. Stage One is expected to be open in July.

Wishlist CEO Lisa Rowe said construction was in full swing with the roof expected to be installed in mid-March.

“We can’t wait for Wishlist Centre to open because we know how crucial that circle-of-care is, and how being close to a hospital during or after a medical crisis is critical to enhancing a patient’s wellbeing,” Ms Rowe said.

The four-level $14 million Wishlist Centre (Stage One) is supported by a $12 million Federal Government grant through the Australian Government’s Department of Health, Community Health and Hospital Program, secured by Federal Member for Fisher, Andrew Wallace, and a $2 million donated by local philanthropists Roy and Nola Thompson.

Serves: 4 (2 ½ serves per portion) Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 30 minutes Ingredients 4 small sweet potatoes, washed 2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil plus extra for drizzling 1 onion, diced 1 garlic clove, crushed 1 teaspoon paprika 1 teaspoon ground cumin ½ teaspoon ground coriander seeds 1 400g can black beans, rinsed and drained 1 cup cheddar cheese, reduced fat, grated To serve: 1 avocado, deseeded Juice of half a lime Freshly ground pepper Sour cream, reduced fat Coriander leaves, roughly chopped Method PREHEAT oven to 200°C. PRICK the surface of the sweet potatoes with a fork then drizzle each with olive oil and wrap individually in foil. Place on a baking tray.* ROAST for 30 minutes or until soft and a knife passes through with no resistance.

SLICE each potato in half lengthways and mash the insides to soften with a fork.

HEAT frying pan on medium heat then add oil once hot. Fry the onion, garlic and spices until soft, about five minutes.

ADD the black beans and heat through.

TOP each potato with bean mixture and a sprinkle of cheese.

MAKE guacamole by mashing the avocado in a small bowl and mixing through the lime juice and some ground pepper.

SERVE the sweet potatoes with a dollop of guacamole and sour cream and sprinkle with coriander. *Alternative: Prick the surface of the sweet potatoes with a fork and wrap each one in a damp paper towel.

Microwave each potato individually on high for six minutes or until soft and a knife passes through with no resistance.

• Keep an eye on your citrus for aphids and leaf miner. They breed up quickly in these moist conditions and damage new growth. Treat as required with pyrethrum spray or white oil.

• White cedar caterpillars are on the move. Wrap a hessian bag around the trunk and check underneath for the damaging insects as they’ll congregate there during the day. Squash or spray them with a pyrethrum spray.

• Plan where you’d like to plant your bare rooted roses when they become available in winter. Select the sites and prepare them by digging in manure and mulch. Do the same about a month before planting (more digging in June), and your bare rooted roses will thrive.

• Wait until the rain eases a bit before giving you lawn a fertiliser boost coming into autumn, or else it’ll just wash away and be wasted.

• When the rains do ease, gypsum should also be applied to the lawns and gardens, followed up a couple of weeks later with an application of a soil wetting agent, such as Wettasoil, to make sure that the last summer rains soak in deep and keep the lawn going through winter.

• At the start of the month, put spring flowering bulbs, such as freesia, anemone, ranunculus and daffodil, in the fridge veggie crisper and plant out at the end of the month.

• Prepare the soil for winter veggies (such as broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower) by digging in loads of compost and manure.

• Start planting broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower seedlings from mid-March.

Watch out for little green caterpillars, as they can destroy your seedlings overnight.

The change officially took place in November last year, with Bill saying it had been months in the making behind the scenes with the established business owners ready for a change, a new goal and enthusiasm about moving to their own independent brand. Three months down the track and Bill happily shares they’re still enjoying providing their service to locals under the new name.

Fly-in-fly-out golfers have a field day GOLFERS were stopped mid-swing recently at the sight of a helicopter landing on the practice area at Maleny Golf Club where some occupants of sporting note disembarked to play a round.

Former rugby league international Mark Cantoni and mates Matt Lockyer (brother of league legend Darren) and Angus Simmons said they really loved the course and had a great day out.

“The flight up from Brisbane through the Glasshouse Mountains was spectacular and it was amazing to land on and play at such a picturesque course like Maleny,” said Cantoni. “We’ll definitely be back!”

League legend Alfie Langer was also spotted out on the course recently.

Masters champion and former world No. 1 Adam Scott really helped put Maleny Golf Club on the international ‘must play’ map in 2020 by streaming nine holes live on Instagram during the

Since then a plethora of top players have visited Maleny to pit their skills against the course – the most recent being former Australian men’s amateur champion and 2022 Australian PGA champion Jed Morgan.

Sign on success for the Doggies THERE were plenty of eager rugby leagues players from all ages at the kennels for the Beerwah Bulldogs sign on day last month, with club president Shannan Roy sharing it was a great turnout and a fantastic start to the season.

“Our sign on day went well with good

numbers, and we appear to have an increase across the board in all teams from last year.” said Shannan.

For those keen to play this year, you can still get involved with the club welcoming you to come down and have a try on training days – Tuesday and Thursday at the Beerwah Sportsground.

The Range Croquet Report Club Contributed by Ken Barker ON Thursday, January 27 Sarah Widin defeated Vince Carbery 13-9 while Ken Barker defeated Val Carbery 19-12 with both matches fiercely contested on lawn one. During the game on lawn two, when Wallace Roy defeated Helen Uhlmann 5-2, a great moment occurred.

Wallace suddenly relocated his missing roquet skill, which had been absent for some time, by identifying a fault in his backswing. This resulted in much joy as he proceeded to make many impressively accurate roquets during the match. A croquet player’s dream comes true!

Saturday morning, January 29 saw the inaugural association skills workshop held on our lawns. This was well attended by local players and people from other clubs in the region.

Five skills stations were set up, with a specific skill being coached at each.

It was a wonderful opportunity. Many thanks to the coaches who donated their time.

On Sunday, January 30 we had the pleasure of a visit from Ted Singleton, a longstanding friend of the club.

Sarah and Ted made a very impressive partnership to defeat Donna and Ken 21-14. In another match, Wallace took on the strong partnership of Kath Smith and Helen Andrews, with the final score

14-9 in Kath and Helen’s favour.

We ventured into new territory on Thursday, February 3. Several players commenced ricochet, another form of croquet to association which is very similar, but with different tactics and slightly different rules of play. A steep, but necessary learning curve commenced for the eight people involved. “Necessary” as we are entering a combined team, “Ranbour” (Range + Nambour), in the ricochet pennants tournament this year. Several players also have expressed an interest in participating in the Lochwood and Bray pennants competitions, association tournaments where we are fielding teams as well – a tribute to the strength of the club.

in a game of association doubles on Sunday Feburary 6. Lynette, who is playing in Bribie on the weekend of the 12th and 13th, welcomed the experience of partnering Vince as preparation. They went down 9–12 to Donna and Val who are both division two players in fine form. Wallace and Sarah had a wild time ducking in and out of torrential rain bullets to lose a tight, fun-filled game to Helen Andrews and Ken 6–8.

Robert Lee and Wallace are fundamental to the care of our lawn.

Robert has been invaluable in caring for the “greens” mower - the “old John Deere” - which delivers the fine cut required for precision play. In the attached photo, the dynamic duo demonstrate their technical versatility by addressing the problem of leaking irrigation pipes, a job which occupied nearly a full day. We, as a club, are very grateful for the work that they put into maintaining the lawn.

Play days are Thursday and Sunday.

Please arrive at 2pm for games to be arranged at 2.15pm and started by 2.30pm. Contact Sarah for other days.
