Consistently these days I hear how challenging it is for sporting clubs and community organisations to find volunteers, so it is great to see these ladies being great role models for our younger community members.

On our cover this week is the lovely Katie Piva. She started her career in early childhood education back in 1979 at Mooloolah State School and recently retired from Beerwah and District Community Kindy.

Katie has been involved with the Kindy both as a parent and as a teacher for just over 30 years, which is such a remarkable achievement and a milestone that not many of us will achieve.

Work gets underway After operating for more than 30 years and jumping through plenty of bureaucratic hoops over the past six years, the Peachester Rural Fire Brigade is really looking forward to finally having a purpose-built depot facility.

At this stage it is anticipated the official opening of the shed will not happen until early 2021. However, members of the Peachester Rural Fire Brigade committee are excited and

keen to monitor the progress of the new shed, which is under construction on Peachester Road heading towards Woodford.

GC&M News caught up with the brigade’s first officer Kev Wrayford and some of the committee members recently when the slab for the facility was being poured. It will include a four-bay shed, a training room, offices and a kitchen/tea room.

While they may only be at the slab stage, there has already been significant work on and support for the project by a number of local individuals and businesses. The brigade members are keen to acknowledge the generous assistance that has got them this far with the project.

They plan to erect an honour board for all those involved with the project and particularly wanted to thank Sayer Civil from Maleny, Graeme Huddy from Huddy Plant Hire, Steve Harrison from Alta Engineering, Tom Ryan from TMR Concreting, Bulk Granite from Caboolture, Hy-Tech Concrete from Beerwah, Boyd Hanlon from Superior Sheds, Rod Heading from Beach to City Concrete Cutting, surveyor Rob

The small but enthusiastic group of locals who make up the volunteer fire brigade hope that having their own facility will encourage other locals to join them and become part of the Peachester Rural Fire Brigade.

The crew understands that not everyone is interested in fighting fires.

Kev assured us that there are plenty of other jobs, particularly for someone who would be happy to lend a hand

with washing trucks, mowing the grounds and all sorts of other tasks.

Basically they are on the lookout for motivated, self-driven people and, ideally, to recruit some new brigade members who are available during the week.

New walking trail in Maleny Nature lovers can explore more of the Sunshine Coast hinterland with new trails opening at the Maleny Community Precinct wetland, accessible off Porters Lane.

The Maleny Northern Wetlands Trail is an easy 1.8km walk that is relatively flat and suitable for walkers of all fitness levels. You can access the walk by heading to Parkland Drive (which is not on all map apps yet) off Porters Lane. Look for the street sign halfway down the hill that says ‘Northern Wetlands Trail’ where you can park your car. At that point there is an unassuming grass track leading to the start of the wetlands loop.

This beautiful and serene wetlands area is abundant with the chatter of bird life and the sound of frogs. It offers great views and the chance to spot a myriad of different birds along the way.

Sightings of the dusky moorhen are common but visitors may be fortunate to experience the rare sighting of the white-necked heron.

Get Ready Queensland Week Get Ready Queensland Week 2020 runs from October 12-18 so GC&M News caught up with Cathy Buck, Sunshine Coast Council coordinator disaster management, to tell us what the week is about, as well as providing some tips on how our local communities can get ready.

Q: What is Get Ready Queensland Week?

The week is a call to action for all Queenslanders to prepare their homes and communities and get ready for the 2020-2021 severe weather season.

Sunshine Coast Council is supported by the Queensland Government to promote this event locally. However, as most people are aware, disasters can strike anytime and anywhere, so we encourage the community to be prepared year-round.

Q: As we approach summer, what types of extreme weather events/ potential disaster situations should we be aware of?

When it comes to extreme weather events and emergency situations, it’s not a matter of if but when. In our region this most commonly includes bushfires, floods, severe storms and, of

course, we are still living with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Q: How should we prepare for an emergency?

There are three easy steps you can follow to get ready.

Katie’s first teaching job was at

Early childhood educator Katie Piva has devoted her professional life to teaching. Her passion for the profession, her community and the countless children and families whose educational journeys she shared over the years is still clearly evident when chatting to her on the eve of her retirement.

From her first job as a young graduate teacher at Mooloolah State School in 1979, to her work as a local supply (relief) teacher and remarkable 30-year involvement with Beerwah and District Kindergarten, Katie has undoubtedly enriched the lives of many children (and, in some cases, the children of those children).

Growing up in Chermside in Brisbane, after graduating high school Katie started her teacher training, aged 17, at Kedron Park and Carseldine, majoring in physical education, early childhood and primary school teaching.

Katie said that even during her training, it was the early childhood education that interested her the most. “And I still love it even after 40 years,” she said.

Her first teaching position was at Mooloolah State School, where she was the preschool, year 1 and year 2 teacher. Back then Katie taught the younger classes while another teacher taught years 3-5, and the principal taught years 6-7.

teacher for the whole of the north Queensland region. She later became the teacher in charge at Ayr Preschool before relocating back to North Brisbane with her family in 1986.

Moving to Beerwah with her young family at the end of the 1980s, Katie said the first thing she did was to join the local playgroup and enrol her eldest son Jeremy at the local kindergarten.

“My association with Beerwah Kindy started then and I’ve now been involved there for nearly half my life!

I remember when I first walked in, I was touched by what a warm, nurturing and welcoming place it was and it’s exactly the same today with new parents coming in and sharing the same feelings, which is just beautiful,” Katie said.

At the time, Katie was doing relief teaching at the local preschools. She said she always dreamed that one day she would be able to work at the kindy and in 1994 she was offered a permanent part-time position and hasn’t looked back since landing her dream job.

Katie said all three of her children (Jeremy, Alyce and Josh) attended Beerwah Kindy.

Over the years she has witnessed how the physical space has blossomed through grants and community contributions.

One of the lovely aspects of her work has been spending so many years within the local community teaching children and forming meaningful, and in some cases life-long, connections with families and colleagues.

“I remember when I first started I taught a little girl at Mooloolah, and years later when I was at Beerwah Kindy I ended up teaching her sister’s children,” Katie said.

“One of the things I’ve loved about working in our community is that I’ve been fortunate to have lovely continuity of connection with many families – especially through the kindy.”

Sometimes Katie has taught up to five children from the same family and she has enjoyed the beautiful moments seeing grandparents she knew as parents picking up their grandchildren from kindy.

“I have been so privileged to be able to spend so much time with young children and to be part of this community. It’s such a unique and beautiful time of life where the foundations for future health and wellbeing are formed – it’s been so rewarding and I’ve enjoyed every minute,” she said.

A farewell wine and cheese evening will be held at Beerwah Kindy on Friday, October 16 for present and past families and colleagues to wish Katie all the best for her future adventures involving family, grandchildren, friends and travel.

Turning red to end domestic violence

The new petrol station to be built in Maleny opposite the state school is back in Sunshine Coast Council’s development assessment system, with an application lodged to have an illuminated advertising pylon approved.

To be placed on the Bunya Street side close to the corner with Cudgerie Street, the 6m high and 2m wide brightly coloured pylon will display the branding of the petrol station (Mobil according to the accompanying illustrations) and the usual variety of fuel options and prices.

The planning application documents say the illuminated sign has been sited and designed to ensure that it does not contribute towards visual clutter.

To achieve this, the application states that the pylon sign is “… located within the approved landscaping area. This ensures that the proposed development will not be clearly visible or obtrusive when viewed from the street or surrounding properties”.

As the petrol station development is already approved, the application for the 6m illuminated advertising sign is deemed as being ‘code assessable’ and, as such, there is no requirement for public notification and no formal opportunity for community submissions to be made to the council.

Maleny has joined townships across Queensland by having a red bench in a public location as a permanent reminder that domestic violence occurs within all our communities.

On Friday, October 9, Quotarian Jan Olde and Cr Winston Johnson shared the honour of unveiling the bench outside Maleny Post Office in the Riverside Centre, which is rather fittingly post office red.

The local bench is supported by Speak Up Now Stop Domestic and Family Violence (a combined local group with representatives from Zonta, Lions, Rotary and Quota clubs). It was successfully achieved through the practical actions of Maleny Quota International, which originally donated the bench around 20 years ago, the Rotary Club of Maleny, which supplied the red paint, and Maleny Men’s Shed members Malcolm Baker and Rick Townsend, who completed the renovating and painting of the bench.

Quota’s immediate past president Val France said the red bench would become a conversation point to raise awareness of domestic and family violence within our community and educate people in what the community could do to help reduce further violence.

The Speak Up Now - Stop Domestic and Family Violence group is working with Sunshine Coast Council, the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre and local body corporate owners to create more red benches within Maleny and along the Blackall Range in the near future.

The Red Bench Project was launched in May by The Red Rose Foundation, which is comprised of service

Its aim is to have at least one red bench in every local government area in Queensland. Each bench incorporates a metal plaque with the wording ‘Domestic violence: Let’s change the ending’. The new Maleny bench brings the total number of benches to 161.

After a 30-year history in Maleny, the red bench was the final project for local Quota members as they have decided to dissolve the Quota Club of Maleny.

I’ve contacted real estate agents, followed up every vacant building and commercial space in Landsborough, approached [Sunshine Coast] council and even our local politicians for help to find somewhere here,” she said.

“Maybe I’ve missed something and there is a hidden gem or a mystery benefactor who may have some land we can use.

“Ultimately, if we can’t find something suitable in the area, we’ll have to relocate the business further up the coast but I’d much rather continue to support the Landsborough community,” Lizzie said.

Landsborough-based education and support service All About Autism is looking for a permanent place in the area to call home.

The business, which offers an autism specific learning program supporting pre-prep and schoolaged children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), currently alternates its service out of the Landsborough CWA hall and the Girl Guides hall.

Director Lizzie Vaughan said she was currently at capacity with 40 children enrolled and an additional 20 on the waiting list.

Lizzie is looking to lease or buy somewhere locally that can accommodate three classroom spaces with a small kitchen and toilet, plus an outside space (preferably with grass and fencing) for children’s play time.

“As we currently run the business out of two temporary sites, each day we run sessions that require a full classroom set up and pack up at the end of the day, so it’d be lovely to have somewhere permanent,” Lizzie said.

She is also happy to explore the option of leasing land with toilet access that could have portable buildings put on it, preferably around the Landsborough, Mooloolah, Glenview or Beerwah area.

The business was a recent winner at the 2020 Glass House Small Business Awards (aka the Glassies).

Lizzie said the service currently operated with a team of four teachers over four days. However, she would love to operate five days a week with enough space to keep up with demand for the service, which has flourished over the past five years.

Visitors welcome again at Embracia 2020 has certainly been an unusual year with COVID-19 Embracia resident social restrictions affecting all Marcia members of Embracia Aged Care communities. For residents in aged care, restrictions on visiting had been particularly tough.

However, recent changes mean that while Queensland Health’s aged care directions are still in place, the strict no visitor rules have been eased slightly allowing residents to once again enjoy time with friends, family and loved ones.

This has been welcome news to staff and residents at Embracia aged care homes in Woodford and Burpengary, with residents particularly pleased to see visitors in person again.

General Manager, Gabrielle Hamilton from Embracia said that while it was not quite business as usual, residents were now able to receive up to two visitors at a time per resident.

Visitors are still required to practise physical distancing, as well as following strict entrance screening. “The staff have gone above and beyond to ensure the wellbeing of residents through these tough times by sharing laughter, love and joy wherever possible. We look forward to hopefully returning to being fully operational again in the not too distant future,” Gabrielle said.

Maleny community taking action GC&M News readers may recall a community forum held in Maleny in July 2019, when more than 60 locals gathered to discuss and decide on a new way for the community to work together to consider and act on important issues impacting their daily lives.

At the gathering Maleny Forums was endorsed as the vehicle to convene public meetings to share information in a factual and respectful manner, and take decisions on further action if required.

A coordinating team was endorsed as the volunteer body that could convene and promote future public forums on community-wide issues identified by Maleny residents.

A top priority for those at the first meeting was the concerns raised by residents about parking and traffic in and around Maleny.

Following that forum, the Maleny Forums coordinating team collected information on traffic and parking issues, including carrying out a community survey with 579 local responses.

A parking and traffic forum was held last November to hear the outcome of the research and to decide on a way

forward.

The 80-plus participants in the parking and traffic forum stated that they wanted to do something about the dangers of pedestrian crossings, lack of car parks and parking signage, the poor amenity and art of the streets and surrounds, the abysmal state of foot and bike paths and connections, and the chaotic nature of traffic in the town centre during busy periods.

The forum participants decided to form small dedicated working groups to take up the issues with the Sunshine Coast Council and Queensland Government. Five action groups were formed: • Pedestrian crossings working group • Parking working group • Traffic working group • Placemaking and streetscape working group • Pathways and connectivity working group.

Local residents are welcome to join these working groups and communicate their issues, concerns and solutions by emailing the groups through the Maleny Forums email address at malenyforums@gmail.com.

Locals at the 2019 community forum The constraints associated with COVID-19 have provided some challenges but progress has recently been made.

The working groups have been meeting since the end of November to clarify issues and have carried out specific research and information gathering as well as building relationships with key contacts in Sunshine Coast Council, local councillor Winston Johnson; local state member Andrew Powell and the Queensland Government Department of Transport and Main Roads.

A copy of the results of the Maleny parking and traffic survey have been given to Mr Powell and Cr Johnson for their information and action.

Representatives of the five working groups recently met with Cr Johnson and council officers to review progress to date and to consolidate the direct partnership arrangements between the working groups, council officers and Cr Johnson.

Over the coming months the individual working groups will report progress and achievements to the broader Maleny community through local media and social media.

Community News Life is a dance, not a journey

By Sonia Isaacs Clark Landsborough author and 2019 Australasian mediator of the year, Tom Stodulka, has recently released a new anthology of poems entitled ‘Life is a Dance’.

The book contains a compilation of almost 100 poems, and includes work from his debut book of poetry ‘Storm Clouds and Silver Linings – My Journey’ (originally published in 2018 and now in its third reprint) as well as new pieces written in recent years.

Drawing on his extensive insights into the human condition through his role as a professional peacemaker, with more than 40 years of experience in mediation and law, Tom’s second book of poetry is already garnering remarkable reviews.

Since writing his first poem in 1976 as a young naval legal officer, Tom has successfully combined his creative outlet of poetry with a hugely impressive career as a mediator that has seen him mediate more than 4,000 legal disputes within

Australia and be awarded the 2019 Australasian’s Law Award’s mediator of the year.

Tom said he settled on the title of his book as he felt life and all its challenges presented something different than merely a journey, and to describe life as being a dance implied a happier, hopeful and more positive outlook.

Many of his poems contain references to dance and he hopes his work captures the challenges of life while also retaining positivity in an everchanging world.

“Poetry is a wonderful way to connect directly with people. I like to write poems that bring people hope, remind them to find joy and to help them seek opportunities, and develop positivity and resilience in facing the challenges of everyday life,” Tom said.

“Life has always had its heartaches. It is how we face these challenges that can make a huge difference.”

Bridge club thanks council Maleny Contract Bridge Club committee members recently met with Cr Winston Johnson to formally acknowledge the two grants they have received from Sunshine Coast Council this year.

Club president Jean Coffee also thanked Dr Stuart Craig and committee members for all the work involved in putting the grant applications together.

The club received $5,192 in March for solar power from the council’s major grants community facilities fund. As part of the club’s sublease with Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club (MDSRC), members agreed that their club should be as sustainable as possible, with solar energy significantly assisting in reducing environmental impacts and promoting

clean energy production. During what has undoubtedly been a challenging year for all community-run clubs due to COVID-19, the subsequent reduction in electricity bills will also be very welcome.

In May, the club also received a $998 grant for the purchase of a laptop through the council’s COVID-19 community response, continuity and connectivity scheme. During lockdown, the club organised online bridge tournaments in order to keep members connected and the laptop has been integral in being able to provide that option.

The club hopes it can start organising classes early in 2021 to share the members’ passion for the game with interested locals, so make sure you watch this space as GC&M News will keep you updated.

Hard work acknowledged with life membership

Long time Tibro Netball Club members Kathy Smith and Mary-Lou Oliver, both Netball Australia accredited coaches and national C umpires, were recently presented with life membership awards for the many years of hard work, commitment and dedication to their club.

Club president Dimi Young said Kathy and Mary-Lou had volunteered their services in the club for many years and played an enormous part in the continuing improvements to the venue and the sport “that we all love and now benefit from”.

Kathy was instrumental in starting and organising the junior competition in 1993 and coached the club netball teams from 1993-2003. She also held numerous committee positions and roles during that time including Tibro’s delegate on the Caloundra District Netball Association, president in 1995 and 1996, secretary in 1997, junior registrar in 1998, coaching convenor in 1999 and 2000, and umpire convenor from 2001–2003. She returned to the role of umpire convenor in 2019 and is still doing that job.

Even though Kathy moved to Caloundra in 2004, she has always helped with umpiring duties in the junior competitions and many carnivals over the years.

Kathy Smith and Mary-Lou Oliver Mary-Lou Oliver coached many Tibro teams from 2003-2013 and returned again in 2019. She has umpired many social and mixed netball games played at Glasshouse Sports Club over the years, which provides revenue for the club and a great community resource.

During her years on the committee Mary-Lou was instrumental in the big projects of building a third netball court and the Tibro’s shed, which is now an essential asset to the club.

Mary-Lou was club president from 2007–2011, a committee member in 2012 and has been vice president since 2019.

About the mass transit project

Contributed by Tracey Goodwin-McDonald co-founder of and spokesperson for the Mass Transit Action Group The Mass Transit Action Group (MTAG) is a group of residents who live on the Sunshine Coast and are concerned about the impacts of the proposed mass transit project due to its narrow focus on light rail and massive population densification from Maroochydore to Kawana as the only solution.

We accept that the Sunshine Coast Council is right to address the issues of population growth, congestion and inadequate and under-utilised public transport, but strongly believe the current mass transit plan is not the right solution for the future.

We also feel the people of the Sunshine Coast should get the chance to have their say in the development of the next stage of this process – the detailed business case. This is particularly true as the council has committed $7.5 million of the $15 million to be spent on this next phase.

We believe the Sunshine Coast mass transit project is flawed for a range of significant and disturbing reasons.

The interim preliminary business case is supposed to look at all transport options but is heavily skewed to light rail. Other more modern technologies are not being adequately assessed.

The light rail proposed has fixed overhead wires and fixed steel tracks making it inflexible and a visible barrier between the beach front and the beach communities.

The business case is focussed on the 13km coastal corridor and does not address public transport needs for the majority of Sunshine Coast residents.

There has been a total lack of community engagement on this project since 2014 so the community is not aware of the full details of what is being planned. Recently, the council was forced to include a consultation process after Cr Joe Natoli raised the issue at the August council meeting.

Many people think the mass transit project currently being undertaken by the council is about finding the public transport solution that is right for residents. It is not. It is about the form of public transport that will achieve the greatest ‘urban transformation’ in the coastal corridor. The intent seems to use light rail as a way of achieving higher residential densities in the mass transit catchment area.

Under the current plan, the council is proposing to increase the housing density 400m either side of the light rail corridor.

Stage one (the extent of the current project) looks at the 13km stretch from Maroochydore to Kawana. If it goes ahead, it will mean the population has the potential to be up to five times more than we now have in this 13km stretch. There will be mass densification from Maroochydore to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

And this is only stage one! Stage two continues this densification all the way to Caloundra.

In fact, these stage one numbers mean we would end up with a population per square hectare worse than the Gold Coast. The Gold Coast light rail corridor has a population of 57,000 people or 28 people per square hectare. We could end up with as many as 105,000 people or 84 people per square hectare. These people will still need a car so it will mean more congestion not less.

Many of its assumptions are not explained or validated and there are no costings shown. It is worth noting that in Sydney the light rail project is already double the budgeted $1.5 billion to cost $3 billion.

On the Gold Coast all residents pay a $133 transport levy. On the Sunshine Coast we currently pay $44. Is this slug on the way for Sunshine Coast residents too?

The MTAG is dedicated to ensuring that the Sunshine Coast Council’s mass transit business case reflects the needs and aspirations of the community.

We need a transport solution for the future but believe this is not it!

On August 20 this year the council agreed to undertake public consultation on this plan before progressing to the detailed business case.

It is now important that we all voice our thoughts to the council on what we would like to see happen in the future.

This is not just about the people on the coast. It impacts everyone.

For some it will impact where they live, for others where they play.

But we will all pay! We are already paying.

The council has already spent $8.5 million on this project!

This plan does not mean less congestion ... it means more cost, more people, more cars and more high-rise.

As part of a broader strategy to reinvigorate community engagement and use of the historic Beerburrum School of Arts hall, committee members are excited about plans for a spectacular art exhibition on Saturday, November 14 from 10am-4pm, and are keen for local artists to get involved.

Event organiser Heather Cardaci said that for just a small booking fee ($10 per artist) local sculptors and artists were invited to book in as a wonderful way of showcasing and selling their work, while also strengthening connections with their local community.

Heather said she hoped the exhibition would not only showcase the incredible artistic talent of the local region, but also attract the local community to come together and support locally run events at the hall, which has been a place of community gathering for more than 100 years.

“We are really keen to look at ways we can engage our small community and we really want to get people out and about and meeting others. We thought an art exhibition would be a fun and interesting way to do that,” Heather said.

Tables for displaying artwork will be provided but artists are requested to bring their own easels and display boards for presentation.

Heather said all proceeds from any sales would go directly to the artist as the event was more about bringing

people together than a fundraiser for the hall.

“We thought an arts event would be a wonderful way to promote the use of the hall, especially as it was the traditional school of arts for the area,” Heather said.

“We’ve had some really wonderfully positive feedback on the exhibition idea and are excited that local artists are willing to be involved.”

With the recent addition of new air conditioning and a PA system, and with a number of artists already committed to the event, committee members hope this inaugural exhibition will become an annual event that may extend to a full weekend in the future.

Plans are also under way to include wine and cheese tasting from local suppliers.

We’re extending the JobKeeper Payment until 28 March 2021.

The Australian Government is extending the temporary JobKeeper Payment to the end of March 2021. From 28 September, businesses must meet the turnover test and submit their declarations by the 14th of each month.

There will be two new payment rates – one for those who work more than 20 hours per week in the relevant period, and another for those who work less. The employee eligibility date has also changed to 1 July, meaning some businesses could claim for more staff.

It’s part of our plan to keep business in business, and Australians in jobs.

Dave says one of the great things about the sport is that it’s easy on the body but still offers enough challenges

for those wishing to extend their game skills, and it’s a game for all ages.

“We love seeing the grandkids come along and play alongside their grandparents, and it’s a great game the whole family can enjoy, suitable for ages 10-110,” Dave said.

To encourage more families to get involved, juniors (up to age 18) who join the club will get free membership for the first year, with coaching available through the week.

Mapleton author Marg Gibbs, known for her children’s books, has written a new book for grown-ups called ‘Conversations with Strangers: The art of creativity and connection’.

Divided into 12 chapters, this easyread book is sprinkled with her own photography, poems and stories offering ideas and activities that promote joy and creativity.

In the book Marg expresses her ideas and experiences of meeting strangers and how having a conversation with them can shift the mood, inject a new perspective on life and even help direction.

She suggests that a little less fear about approaching someone can lead to satisfying dialogue that removes anxiety and creates happiness.

Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Poisons and baits don’t just kill rats Pesticides are substances that are designed to control pests. They include insecticides, rodenticides, molluscicides (such as snail bait) and herbicides. Sadly, they also commonly poison non-target species, including wildlife and pets, through either primary or secondary poisoning.

Primary poisoning occurs when baits are non-specific. For example, a brushtail possum or antechinus eating rat bait may be killed directly by the poison or it may become weak and ill, which increases its risk of being preyed upon, attacked by cats or dogs or being hit by vehicles. Secondary poisoning occurs when one animal (eg, an owl or eagle) consumes a rodent that still has undigested bait in its gut or mouth.

Which wildlife are most at risk? Small mammals, including possums and bandicoots, often consume poisons such as snail bait, rat bait or slug bait. Despite their size, wallabies and kangaroos have been known to suffer from rodenticide poisoning.

Rescued by the author and taken to Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, the young brushtail possum pictured was suffering from rat poisoning and sadly did not survive.

Small mammals can also be poisoned by insecticides. Possums, for example, can ingest these poisons when consuming fruit from a tree that has been sprayed with insecticide.

Birds have a high metabolic rate

and therefore succumb quickly to poisons. Australian birds of prey – owls and diurnal raptors – can be killed by internal bleeding when they eat rodents that have ingested rat bait. Insectivorous birds will often eat insects sprayed with insecticides.

There are alternative wildlife-friendly ways to deal with pests: • Deter rats and mice around your property by simply cleaning up, removing rubbish, keeping animal feed well contained and indoors, picking up fallen fruits and vegetation, and using chicken feeders.

• Seal up holes in your walls and roof to reduce the amount of rodent friendly habitat in your house.

• Replace palms with native trees.

Palm trees are a favourite hideout for black rats, while native trees provide ideal habitat for native predators like owls and hawks that help to control rodent populations.

• Set traps in a safe, covered spot away from the reach of children, pets and wildlife. Two of the most effective yet safe baits are peanut butter and pumpkin seeds.

• To control slugs, terracotta or ceramic plant pots can be placed upside down in the garden or aviary.

Slugs and snails will seek the dark, damp area this creates and can be collected daily. They can then be drowned in a jar of soapy water. You can also sink a jar or dish into the soil and fill it with beer. The slugs are attracted to the yeast in the beer, fall in and then drown.

Our precious wildlife have enough threats to deal with (traffic, cats, dogs, disappearing habitat).

Meet the Producers

Seven years later the Simpsons stepped out of the cheese business but continued to supply milk to the factory.

Producers name: Sara and Markus Bucher Farm name: Maleny Cheese and Obi Obi Dairy Farm location: Balmoral Ridge and Kenilworth Years of operation: 16 years and 6 years If, like me, you’re a sucker for a slice or two (or three or four…) of cheese, you will, of course, have heard of Maleny Cheese. It is owned and run

by Sara and Markus Bucher, who say operating a boutique cheese factory has always been their passion. After chatting with Sara, I think it’s pretty safe to say it will continue to be there passion for some time yet.

Where it all began …

Sara and Markus, a Swiss-trained cheese maker, have been happily married for more than 30 years after their paths crossed while backpacking in the US. They later married in Switzerland, where they ran a cheese and bread shop for seven years. During that time, they welcomed their three

daughters to the world before deciding to sell their business and relocate back to Australia, heading to Townsville (Sara’s home town) and welcoming their son. The desire to open their own boutique cheese factory stayed with them, though the opportunity for a career in the dairy industry in Townsville was somewhat limited.

In the late 1990s they jumped at the opportunity to move and work for a prominent yoghurt factory in Margaret River in WA. “We longed to return to Queensland and the desire to set up our own boutique cheese factory was still strong,” Sara said. They visited plenty of dairy-rich regions in search of the perfect place but kept coming back to Maleny - “true dairy land”.

It was here that the Bucher family set out to create Maleny Cheese.

“We were lucky to have linked up with David and Heather Simpson, who owned a local dairy factory. With their support, together we opened Maleny Cheese in April 2004,” Sara said.

Who supplies your factory?

Being able to support local producers is important to the Bucher’s and Maleny Cheese is supplied by four local farms. One is Peachester farm Riverview owned by the Page family who GC&M News featured in the last Meet the Producer (September 16 edition).

In 2014 the Bucher’s had an opportunity to work with a dairy farm near Kenilworth and were presented with the opportunity to purchase Obi Obi Dairy.

“We are experienced dairy producers but we were the new kids when it came to farming,” Sara said. “We’ve been through the toughest years in the industry but it’s been an incredible journey.”

What is it like being on both sides of the industry – farmer and producer?

“We are processors at heart.

Developing dairy products has always been our dream and there’s never been anything more important than to support those who produce, grow and sell,” Sara said.

When it comes to the local dairy farms supporting Maleny Cheese, Sara says their dairy only strengthens their philosophy to support local farmers. As the combined milk production from the dairy farms supplying Maleny Cheese exceeds what their factory uses, the Bucher’s developed a milk hub, which continues to support other small producers on our region’s doorstep.

How can we get out hands on the products?

Maleny Cheese is open seven days a week, at 1 Clifford Street, Balmoral Ridge, with an onsite shop and café open to the public. You can also find Maleny Cheese products in a number of stores locally or buy them online through their website www.malenycheese.com.au.

Sara and Markus live their passion for providing beautiful, locally made produce, and while they are processers at heart, they have an innate trust and understanding through all levels of the industry, and continue to work in the community to support our local producers.

• This is not about public transport. It’s about “urbanisation” of our coastal strip Maroochydore to Caloundra.

• Urbanisation = high-rise infill = more people in existing residential areas.

• Stage 1 Maroochydore to Kawana to go from 11,000 dwellings to a capacity of 50,000 dwellings.

• Light Rail is the preferred option because of its ability to deliver greater infill. Not because it is the best public transport system.

Songwriting competitions We recently had our (Glasshouse Musos) songwriters competition final at Eudlo Hall and enjoyed performances and new songs from nine acts. The songwriters who appeared were Jacinta Foale and Jenny Fitzgibbon, Deni Chapple, the Dream Weavers (Trent and Mark), Stu McGovern, Ninindi Johnstone, John Ross, Craig Mercer, Tony Mitchell and Pat Craigie, along with their accompanists Mac, Jake, Ian, Juliette and Beans.

The songwriting judges were Noel Gardner, Alex Bridge and Ian Williams.

There were two main prizes to be awarded - a judge’s prize and an audience prize. It turned out to be a tight result, with Ninindi winning the judge’s prize closely followed by Pat, Jacinta and Jenny, and Deni. The runners up received a CD recorded at the Sound Space, and the winner will have four hours recording time in the studio. The audience prize was won by John Ross who will have three hours recording time in the Sound Space.

There were two themes from which the songwriters could draw in writing their songs. One was the horrific bushfires that began in 2019 and so dominated the airwaves back then, and the other was the COVID-19 pandemic.

As to how the writers interpreted the theme was totally up to them. We heard

from some of them that writing their songs and working to the performance deadline with a specific theme was a rewarding experience. It was a shared community experience too and that is always a good thing. I have long thought about the value of competitions in the arts. As a young composer I entered a few of them and certainly can vouch for the career value of them for the artist.

Winning looks good on the CV and opens doors. It is special but it is wholly what you make of it. This brings me back to one of the many wonders of the arts. If you have been gifted with the ability to appreciate them and you have the power of creativity in you then it is a marvelous thing and it must be given opportunity to develop. Competitions encourage work to be created and performed, and that is important for the artist and for us as an audience as well.

There is one other interest of mine that a boutique songwriting competition might satisfy and that is inspiring people to make positive contributions to the world - for the environment, for their community and humanity in general.

If we can create themes for songwriting competitions that encourage uplifting songs to be written, then such competitions will

hopefully take an even more valuable place in our community.

Q1 With the rise of unemployment due to economic factors resulting from COVID-19, homelessness will unfortunately become even more prevalent. This in part is due to the lasting impacts of lockdowns that will be felt throughout 2021 and beyond.

Homelessness can affect anyone - from single young people to families with children, to the elderly. The reasons for homelessness are varied and complex - including mental illness, domestic violence, relationship breakdowns, debt, substance abuse, housing affordability, to name a few.

Our homeless, ranging from our youth to the elderly, need to be protected and have access to safe accommodation, be that short or long term. There are many non-government organisations that deliver specialist homelessness services.

As a state representative, I will work with these stakeholders to hold quarterly meetings to develop strategies and solutions for addressing this issue from a community engagement point of view.

Facilitating these meetings will have the objective of combining knowledge and resources and utilising these in the most effective manner.

The need for additional funding in addressing homelessness, especially youth homelessness, will be very much needed post COVID-19 and beyond as well as investing in mental health initiatives.

Q2 The electorate office location is appointed and organised through the Clerk of Parliament and Queensland Parliamentary Service.

Normally, these leases have been entered in for 2-3 terms before a new location for the electorate office could be sourced.

It would be remiss of me to comment on Electorate Office location without knowing the full details of these agreements.

However, it would make sense that the electorate office remains in Maleny as it would save taxpayers money as it would be costly to conduct a new office fit out and location which would not be the best investment of Glass House electors’ tax money post COVID-19.

Q1 Zonta’s concerns are well founded. There has been an alarming increase in the number of older women who have become, or are at risk of becoming, homeless. And, sadly, many as a result of domestic or family violence.

That’s why I’ve been very supportive of the work of Safe Haven (coordinated locally in the electorate).

Their efforts have revealed 7.2 million spare rooms in private homes across Australia that are vacant for 90% of the year.

Safe Haven maintains a national database of security-vetted community members that donate their spare rooms to women who need a safe place to stay (see www.safehavencommunity.com.au). It’s been my privilege to support Safe Haven financially and to assist them in securing grants for the amazing work they do.

I have also been working on alternative housing models that may assist our community help those who are homeless.

I’ve worked with CHASM to fund and install their small house project in the Maple Street Community Garden.

I’m working with members of the Crystal Waters community to potentially establish a tiny homes initiative.

And in both my capacity as Member for Glass House and shadow Minister for Planning I am working with Greg Richards from Aussie Tiny Houses to ensure we have the right planning standards and approvals to ensure we can provide the greatest range of housing options, at affordable rent, for those who need it.

Q2 If re-elected my office will remain in Maleny.

The location of the office is determined by Parliamentary Services and they have recently renewed the lease in Maleny.

Having said that, I have always acknowledged I represent a community of communities and as such hold regular mobile offices throughout the electorate.

Q1 I am passionate about affordable housing. Since 2000, housing prices have risen 150% while wages have risen just 30%. The waiting list for social housing has blown out to 39,000 people and the government only plans to build 575 homes this year, which is just 1.5%.

The Greens will establish a Queensland housing trust to build 250,000 high-quality publicly owned homes over 10 years.

It’s a genius solution, creating 20,000 jobs per year, and at the end of it, we have homes!

• Rent will be set at 25% of income or market rate, whatever is lower.

• Homes will have solar panels and be well built.

• Tenants can stay for their whole life should they wish.

• We would introduce democratic and tenancy self management models.

• The homes pay for themselves over time through rent.

To come up with these ground-breaking ideas, we had to look overseas. Sixty per cent of the total housing stock in Austria is publicly owned, offering services like pools, gyms and gardens.

Housing is a basic human need but our developerdriven system makes housing unaffordable.

To help with the cost of living, the Greens will reverse privatisation of the electricity network, which will cut power bills by 46%; we will provide free public transport so you can get to work; build bulk-billed clinics in every community; and build a public pharmaceutical company to keep the costs of medicine down. All paid for by making billionaires pay their fair share.

Q2 The government is already in a lease agreement for the office in Maleny, so to save taxpayer money I would use this one, at least until the lease runs out.

However, I don’t plan to be there much – someone who claims to represent the people needs to be with the people.

Full preferential voting … how does it work?

The voting system that will be used for the upcoming state election is called full preferential voting.

This means that instead of indicating support for just one candidate or some candidates, voters must rank all the candidates on the ballot paper in order of their personal preference.

The ranking uses a numbering system, with 1 being your first choice, 2 the second and so on until all the candidates on the ballot paper have been numbered. A pen or pencil is used to write the numbers in the box next to the candidate’s name.

At the close of polling – after 6pm on election day, October 31 – the ballots are initially counted for each voter’s first preference, as indicated by the number 1 next to the candidate’s name.

During the counting process ballots are excluded if they are not formally cast. Reasons for an informal vote may include if the ballot paper is blank or unmarked, ticks or crosses have been used instead of numbering in order of preference, the required number of boxes have not been marked, or it has writing on it that identifies the elector.

If a candidate has more than half of the total votes based on first choices, that candidate wins.

If not, then preferences are distributed according to a set process.

The candidate with the fewest first preference votes is identified and eliminated from the race. Their ballot papers are checked and distributed to the candidates who the voters marked as their second preference.

This means voters who selected the defeated candidate as a first choice then have their votes redistributed and added to the totals of their next choice.

If, as a result of this preference reallocation, there is still no candidate with more than 50% of the total votes, the next candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated and their votes redistributed according to the preferences on the voter ballot papers.

This process continues until a candidate has more than half of the votes.

When the field is reduced to two, a comparison of the top two candidates can be made and is called the two-candidate preferred result.

Q1 The fact that older women are the fastest growing group at risk of homelessness casts shame on our society.

The reasons for this growing tragedy are many and varied, and the solution requires multi-faceted cooperation from all three levels of government.

For the past two years I’ve worked in the Morayfield electorate office of state MP Mark Ryan.

In that role I’ve assisted women who had found themselves without a home and struggling to find a ray of hope.

While the federal government needs to urgently address the underlying causes of this problem – wage disparity, lack of superannuation, insecure work – the state and local governments need to do much more to provide affordable housing with secure tenure.

While the Palaszczuk Labor government has made major inroads into increasing stock of social housing, there is no better time to boost that commitment as we strive to fire up the construction sector and with interest rates at record lows.

This is something I would fiercely advocate for if elected.

I further believe that as a society we can’t continue to stand by and allow homelessness to engulf our mothers, grandmothers and aunties.

We all have a role to play here.

I would never sit by while a relative was forced to sleep rough.

Q1 The number of older women at risk of homelessness is horrific! I believe this really shows the lack of concern our government has shown for its people. For more than 280,000, and rising, aged women to be at risk of homelessness without emergency government intervention is a disgrace and injustice to our Queensland mums and grandmothers.

This issue needs short- and long-term approaches to ensure the security of all at risk. I would propose emergency housing, of course, and financial support in the form of increased aged pension, and mortgage, tax or debt relief for those at risk.

In the longer-term approach, I would establish small independent communities close to towns and transport. These residential communities would be sustainable, running with minimal overheads funded by the government, although I would like it to be community owned to ensure it cannot be taken from the people. It is critical to provide access to local doctors and treatments where needed. Having small communities makes it easier for buses and doctors to service more areas.

We can get very creative with these options and I would love to see mixed-age activities within these residential areas with full community integration.

Before jumping into any solutions, I would ask the community for their suggestions as I am confident all ideas can be improved upon.

Q2 While it makes sense to keep the electorate office in its current location in Maleny, more must be done to effectively service the 25 townships and communities that make up Glass House.

I would support regular, scheduled mobile offices, and even investigate with the Clerk of Parliament the possibility of renting secondary office space in a town such as Woodford.

Q2 I would like to set up my office in the Woodford region. I would be spending a lot of time in Maleny, naturally, although I will live closer to Woodford and feel like it may offer better access to some of the forgotten areas within the electorate. I have strong intentions to be regularly available and present in all areas up and down the hinterland.

This system of voting and vote counting gives the fullest ballot power to each voter as no formal vote is exhausted and all votes are included in the final round of counting. The outcome gives victory to the candidate that a majority of the electorate ultimately prefers.

However, a 2007 Australian parliamentary research paper (‘Australian electoral systems’ by Scott Bennett and Rob Lundie) identified a number of downsides to this voting system.

These included that the system: favours the major parties, can sometimes award an election to the party that wins fewer votes than its major opponent, usually awards the party with the largest number of votes a disproportionate number of seats, and occasionally gives benefits to the parties that manufacture a three-cornered contest in a particular seat.

Q1 The Palaszczuk government not only believes every Queenslander deserves a place to call home, it works hard to help those who need housing support.

Here are some ways the Palaszczuk government currently helps older women experiencing homelessness: • Through the housing support network, sourcing rental homes for those in distress.

• Via the Homeless Hotline, a referral service providing information on where to find support and accommodation.

• Right here on the Sunshine Coast by trialling the Better Together Housing program supporting older women who are looking to share private rental properties.

• By building more than 5,000 affordable homes throughout Queensland.

We know that more needs to be done as the number of women over 50 facing homelessness is increasing. Some may have been forced out of the workforce early, others may be in poor health, while some have lost their partner or don’t have enough superannuation.

As a community we need to do more here. So one of the first groups I will work with is the Lady Musgrave Trust. The vision of the trust is that all women throughout Queensland will be free from homelessness. They do amazing work supporting older women experiencing homelessness and I will work with them to address this growing problem.

Q2 As your local MP, I have to know your concerns and needs, and be capable of responding to these.

With that in mind, I will work from my office in Caloundra’s CBD in Bulcock Street, and also from a mobile office in the Beerwah-Landsborough area.

I plan to be in the community on a regular basis, not just a drop in when elections come around. I will listen to residents. I will be here for you. I will get things done for you.

Q1 Homelessness has been around for some time but what is now obviously an increasing and unfortunate issue due to COVID-19 is the high percentage of unemployment throughout Queensland.

Prior to COVID-19, unemployment was high and homelessness existed. In many cases there were veterans who were without a place to call home, which to me is disheartening.

However, since the lockdowns and their impact on businesses, unemployment became even higher and these effects will last well into 2021 and perhaps even further depending on our government after this coming election.

There are many reasons for homelessness, including domestic violence, substance abuse, mental illness and housing affordability, to name some. Whatever the reasons behind this, those who are homeless need to be assisted and looked after with accommodation that is safe and secure, especially for those from domestic violence situations as well as children.

There are many volunteer not-for-profit organisations that do amazing work but in some cases can lack resources to better assist and since COVID-19 this has also made an impact on how these organisations can help out.

As a state representative I will work closely with communities to better develop strategies in addressing these issues.

Homelessness as well as mental health are issues that need to be addressed properly and thoroughly and not just put in the too hard basket, especially since COVID-19 where times have been tough and will continue to be tough for many.

Q1 I’ve worked in the community services sector for the past 16 years and helped support disadvantaged members of our community find employment and stability, so fixing homelessness has always been a passion of mine.

Homelessness and social dislocation would be priorities for me if I am elected as your local MP. Homelessness is a complex and sensitive issue. It requires a case-by-case approach to assist older women who have become homeless and the consequences that follow, especially the barrier it creates to employment.

The combined collaborative support provided by organisations like Coast 2 Bay, Salvation Army, Sundale and Zonta, work hard to help women in similar situations support each other in conjunction with the above-mentioned organisations.

Better Together Housing is a fantastic program where women who have experienced similar situations can seek housing options together and enable them to share expenditures. This program is also supported by Getting Together, which is a socialisation program of like-minded women in a friendly morning tea setting, sponsored by Zonta.

It enables participants to talk openly and seek compatible, future housemates to establish joint accommodation and commence rebuilding their capacity once again.

Counselling and other mentoring programs are also offered via these programs and I will continue to advocate and support them if elected.

Q2 As I am unsure on any agreements that have been made prior to the location and any leases made, I cannot comment on where the office should be situated. However, being the electorate is Caloundra it would make sense to leave the office in the current location in Caloundra, thus avoiding any further money spent and saving the taxpayers further expenditure.

Q2 Electorate offices are determined by Parliament and the current electorate office for Caloundra has a long-term lease in place after its recent relocation and office fit out. There would be no change to the current location for the next few years at least.

But MPs do their best out in the community, so I will hold regular mobile offices in community spaces to remain connected with residents in all towns of the electorate.

I want to see truth and transparency reinstated in government. Stand up, be counted, fight for the cause. We need freedom of choice to decide what we breath, eat, drink and inject into our bodies. Not corporate greed deciding for us.

Q1 As a lawyer who has worked with vulnerable women for more than 15 years, I am aware of the growing homelessness for older women. There are many factors that, as Zonta identified, contribute to this, and COVID hasn’t helped.

The Greens will invest in public housing to ensure that no one is left homeless. On the Sunshine Coast this will see 6,500 extra social housing homes.

The major parties have focused their post-COVID economic recovery heavily on male-dominated fields and women are being left even further behind. I spoke last edition about our unparalleled plans for education (investing an extra $45 million in Caloundra) that will result in the employment of 13,000 more teachers state-wide. We will address the health impacts to older women by creating multi-disciplinary bulk-billing health clinics to ensure health care is free and wait times cut.

I am a strong advocate for older people. This stems from personal experience of difficulties my mother faced as she aged. I gave evidence at the Royal Commission into Aged Care about this personal experience. I also recently met with Zonta and was very impressed with the wonderful work they do here to address this alarming statistic.

Q2 Balancing accessibility and affordability are two important considerations when contemplating office location. The benefit in maintaining the current MP’s office is that Caloundra is (relatively) accessible by public transport and maintaining the same office (if possible) may have cost savings as infrastructure already exists.

However, Caloundra is not central so I would consider alternate locations, provided it’s accessible by public transport and comparatively affordable.

Regardless of where my office is, I would hold weekly listening posts all around the electorate travelling to you to hear your concerns, ensuring I am accessible to all constituents. For the younger generation I am visible and contactable on social media.

Q1 Rebuilding our economy today, with priority being given to the homeless. There will be pre-ordained planning permission for YMCA caravan trailer parks, backpackers cabins, chalet style motels, etc.

I am passionate about regenerating and reviving our economy and will achieve this by introducing a mandatory pre-ordained proportion of planning permission for homeless backpackers per council division.

Because of the special relationship between landlord and tenant whereby rent increases to an existing tenant can only be affected in relation to capital expenditure and cost of maintenance and upgrade costs amortised on a 30-year loan (typical length of ownership of commercial and residential properties).

Q1 The over zealous approach of our current government in light of the COVID-19 scare and the mismanagement of our health policies have affected many sectors of the community.

The psychological and economic damages will be felt for generations to come.

Of course, the visible closures of businesses and job losses are being propped up temporally, but the real long-term issue of sustained poverty is yet to be fully realised by most.

Women and the elderly have always been at the frontline of such economic crisis throughout history and now is no exception.

As care takers, mothers are, at an alarming rate, victims of domestic abuse due to unnecessary economic strain and draconian measures. This group are over-looked and are under serious threat.

Cost of living including rent, utilities, living costs and crisis care, clearly aren’t being met.

As someone who has helped a fellow woman escape domestic violence, I have witnessed first-hand the red tape and reams of paperwork that needs to be waded through to access help.

There is still much more funding required to feed and house these at-risk groups considering the very COVID restrictions that were meant to be protecting them will be putting them at further risk going forward.

I will be lobbying for greater funding for women’s refuge housing and easier access to crisis support.

Q2 I typically do my office/staff work from home in the morning and do my rounds in the afternoon. If and when elected, I will revise this to a portable mobile office.

In today’s COVID-19 environment I will be available anytime via Zoom or the myriad of video phone smartphone apps such as WhatsApp, Messenger, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Zoom Line, Skype, SMS txt msg, MMS and voice telegraphic apparatus.

Q2 The Caloundra electorate spans a reasonably vast area from the coast to the hinterland. It will be important for me to have the ability to hear the concerns and needs of the people at a moment’s notice.

You Said It Pedestrians

My husband and I are regular pedestrians around the Beerwah area.

We are 60+ and my husband uses a walking stick.

Perhaps for these reasons we look more decrepit and less able than we actually are because when it comes to crossing the road, often at places that have no controlled crossings, so many motorists insist on slowing or stopping to let us cross and become very cranky when we insist that they have the right of way and indicate that they should continue. We are quite capable of waiting for a suitable opportunity to cross the road.

So while this is in some ways considerate of motorists, it is a misplaced consideration and concern as these motorists are not following the road rules and causing potential traffic

It’s encouraging to see there is enough confidence in Beerwah to expand our local shopping centre, a very much needed development giving us more opportunities to shop local. Perhaps a twin movie theatre could be slotted in.

Also it is great to see that Coles hasn’t given up on us. A better position would be the corner of Turner Street and Peachester Road, keeping the village shopping together and central. The servo could still go up on Roys Road.

What a lovely accessible town centre we would have then. Something to put us well and truly on the map.

Sunshine Coast Council will be undertaking a regulated dog inspection program between 1 November 2020 and 31 October 2021.

The purpose of the program is to conduct a compliance audit at premises within the region where dogs that have been regulated under the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008 are being kept.

The Act requires local governments to manage regulated dogs within their boundaries.

The program will work to ensure animal owners are adhering to the mandatory conditions for keeping a regulated dog to reduce the risk posed by these animals.

Water equals jobs. Quality fresh water is the lifeblood of rural Queensland.

We need to be very careful how we use it and what we use it for.

A Bradfield-like scheme (a favourite of the LNP and Andrew Powell) was conservatively put at $20 billion. It involves north Queensland flood waters collected in a new very large dam; then pumped via hundreds of kilometres of tunnels and pipes through the range to the west, then south through canals or pipes into the Warrego.

At that cost we have to begin with a well-informed thorough study.

The fate of the Murray-Darling is all the evidence we need that proper management is cheaper and better for our communities than running on a political message.

The Queensland Government’s Protected Area Strategy is a step in the right direction and I really hope we see more actions to care for nature and culture like this!

As a Queenslander, I love our wildlife but I think there’s so much more we could do to protect and look after our natural environment.

As we tackle the challenges of COVID-19, we need to remember that the decisions we make now to protect our nature and wildlife affect the next generation of Queenslanders.

I’m calling on all sides of politics to support better funding for Queensland’s national parks, nature refuges and onground conservation jobs.

Let the next generation have the same amazing opportunity we do to explore and discover Queensland’s national parks and wildlife now and into the future.

Offer of site for hydro pool

Regarding Andrew Powell’s election promise of $1 million towards the cost of a hydrotherapy pool in the event that the LNP wins the forthcoming state election.

Some years ago, an enlightened citizen of Maleny bequeathed a sum of money for a hydrotherapy pool in Maleny.

The Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club (MDSRC) has played a primary role in efforts to achieve the pool.

The current plan, supported by MDSRC, is to locate the pool on

open space it leases on the Maleny Community Precinct.

The donation promised by Mr Powell approximates the estimated cost of supplying the site with power, road access, water supply and sewerage.

The cost estimate of $1,381,800 was advised to the council in 2018 in an independent report by engineering experts GHD Consultants.

In 2017 then councillor Jenny McKay approached us, unsolicited, to ask if we would be interested in making available a site in which we have an interest in Coral Street for an aquatic centre.

The site already has power, water and road access and is in the centre of Maleny.

We write to place on record our offer, yet again, to make available at no cost a portion of the land on the Coral Street site for use as a hydrotherapy pool.

Should the Coral Street site be now chosen the whole of Andrew Powell’s generous offer could then be used to build the hydrotherapy pool rather than going towards paying council infrastructure costs.

We believe the community would readily support this economical solution to the issue of a site that has hampered the fulfilment of the bequest.

Coles proposed development

To obtain approval, this application by Coles Group Property Developments Ltd will require significant changes to the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme as the land is currently zoned for medium impact industrial use.

This zoning should be retained to accommodate future expansion of the industrial precinct on the opposite side of Roys Road, thereby keeping industry in the one area.

The approval currently sought by the Coles Group notes a supermarket (already three in Beerwah), a fuel outlet (two in Beerwah) and a food and drink outlet of which there are many in Beerwah. It seems that this

State election concerns

My biggest concern is the worst case scenario of the LNP regaining state control and reversing Queensland’s vegetation protection laws and the expansion of mining without any environmental safeguards.

Vegetation clearing in this state needs responsible management and the LNP has shown in the past how irresponsible it can be by basically allowing self regulation, which causes terrible damage to all flora and fauna and to our overall climate.

There are more long-term jobs to be gained when vegetation is properly managed and protected than jobs in unregulated land clearing.

There are more jobs in the renewable energy production sector than there will ever be in mining, especially since many mining operations are replacing human workers with machines.

Deb Frecklington is intending to withdraw all funding from the Environmental Defenders Office (EDO).

So where does this leave farmers,

graziers and other landholders when mining threatens their properties and livelihoods? Who will legally assist them that they can afford and how can they be sure they will represent them without any other hidden agendas?

Just look at what happened to farmers threatened by New Hope’s proposed mining expansion at Acland. If it wasn’t for the EDO those farmers would have a much harder time to get a fair hearing to defend their rights and lands from incompatible resource use nearby.

With thousands of abandoned mining sites (which were never cleaned up) scattered around the state already these farmers are quite right to be concerned about receiving a fair go.

Preference primer

In a preferential system, your vote can never be wasted. Your vote is actually more powerful when you put a minor party before a major party. This is because if the minor party does not get in, your vote then moves to your second (and third, etc) preference.

Your vote will generally land where you have put the first major party. (So if you put a major party before a minor, that’s a vote to the major).

My advice is to not reward bad behaviour by putting the majors first.

They have shown time and again that they are more interested in helping vested and corporate interests rather than ordinary people like us.

You, and only you, get to choose where your preferences go. Parties will, of course, publish how to vote cards that are there as a guide, which will benefit your chosen party.

The bottom line was simple if you analysed the rules Keep well away from others, wash your hands and don’t be fools.

Restrictions now have lifted here in Queensland, for a while.

It makes us bowlers happy and again we’ve learnt to smile.

But spare a thought for others who have not had such good luck The millions all around the world who suffered from this muck.

Be thankful to our leaders who had presence to take action.

Be thankful to our members who responded without question.

Be thankful that this virus never found our Glassy town.

Be thankful that we came back strong and no one let us down.

Be thankful and be so aware of what it might have been.

is a replication of what is already in Beerwah and the other towns of Glasshouse Country.

A far more acceptable development application is the proposed Beerwah Marketplace expansion that has the required zoning for same, thereby keeping the commercial and retail hub in one location.

The existing Glasshouse Country towns have commercial land available to meet future requirements, so there seems no justification for the establishment of a separate commercial and retail precinct on the industrial side of Beerwah town.

Oh, how we fretted and pondered our plight.

How were we going to sleep at night?

Time passed so very slowly as we fixed up our backyards.

We painted, pruned and weeded. Some took to playing cards.

Then finally we heard the news that COVID had retreated.

Established to help people living with Parkinson’s disease in Australia and specifically on the Sunshine Coast, the team behind the locally based Restoring Hope Parkinson’s Therapy (RHPT) is assisting locals to access the therapy they need.

Inspired by the Parkinson Voice Project in Texas, USA, the team is working to preserve the voices of people with Parkinson’s and related neurological conditions through quality, evidence-based intensive speech therapy, follow-up support and education.

Parkinson Voice Project’s founder and CEO Samantha Elandary said up to 90% of people with Parkinson’s were at high risk of losing their ability to speak. Aspiration pneumonia caused by swallowing issues accounted for 70% of the mortality rate in this patient population.

The Texan-based project provides evidence-based speech therapy programs to address the motor speech deficits associated with Parkinson’s and has provided grants to RHPT to deliver a combination of individual speech therapy with ongoing group maintenance on the Sunshine Coast.

RHPT is now offering telehealth therapy options.

RHPT is holding a Q&A session, with valuable information about Parkinson’s and treatment available locally, on Friday, October 16 from 9.30– 10.30am.

Hinterland Families Competing at state championships Contributed by Karli Pearson Congratulations to the six Beerwah Swimming Club swimmers who qualified and swam at the Swimming Queensland 2020 McDonald’s Short Course Championships recently.

It was a big weekend for the swimmers as they competed against the very best swimmers that Queensland has to offer.

Representing Beerwah were Joshua C, Indiah L, Dalton L, Iris R, Seanna T and Kael T. Iris and Seanna both placed in the top 20, while Kael placed in the top 10.

Beerwah Swimming Club is very proud not only of the fact that these swimmers qualified and competed at

state level but also for the way that they conducted themselves.

Under current COVID conditions the swimmers had the support of a team manager and their coach but not their usual cheer squad of family and friends.

Beerwah Splash is a family friendly swim club that meets on the second and fourth Thursday of each month during terms four and one.

Delve deeper into what boys are really made of University of the Sunshine Coast expert in children’s brain development, Associate Professor Michael Nagel, has recently released a book that sheds new light on boys’ behaviour.

An associate professor in child development and learning at USC, Michael uses recent advances in neuroscience as the framework for his latest book, ‘Educating and Raising Boys’. It examines how the hard wiring in boys’ brains influences the way they learn, and also the way boys learn differently from girls.

His new book invites parents, carers and educators to delve deeper into what boys are really made of as a way to better understand and respond to their behaviour. He offers insights into why ‘problematic’ behaviour in boys is often in the eye of the beholder while simultaneously providing a new lens to

understand that this behaviour may be the by-product of the brain and mind when X and Y chromosomes combine.

“With this book, I am challenging society’s apparent war on boyishness and encouraging educators and parents to expand their understanding of the male brain to better support the boys in their lives,” Michael said.

If you’d like to find out more, Michael will be presenting an evening to discuss the latest research from his new book and provide parents and educators with takeaway strategies and tools on Wednesday, October 28 from 5.45-7.30pm.

The event will be held at the USC Moreton Bay campus (Petrie) auditorium, with RSVP requested by Wednesday, October 21.

Dine in Take out with Lea Parkes

Something for everyone at The Orangery

I recently caught up with a couple of girlfriends for a long, leisurely Saturday lunch on the verandah of The Orangery Maleny, which was a lovely spot for some great food, enjoying a rather nice prosecco and just relaxing and taking some time out.

One of the great aspects of this venue is the menu as it keeps even the trickiest diners happy with plenty choice as well as lots of gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options included.

Maintaining some sort of commitment to my healthy eating approach on the day, I went for the

lovely grilled barramundi and salad that I counterbalanced with the absolutely amazing chips (which were so good I chose not to share even one mouthful of them).

One of my dining companions went for her favourite of nachos with spicy beef, which is gluten free, and the other chose the rather healthy option of The Orangery salad with salmon.

Let me say this is not your average salad as it included apples, pears, lettuce, pecans, bacon, cranberries and feta cheese with a creamy poppy seed dressing!

We lingered over our meals and our glass of bubbles before finishing with lovely cups of tea, of which they have a huge range, and, of course, we shared one of the sweet home-baked treats!

It was a lovely catch up and I was so pleased that I remembered to make my booking during the week.

With numbers limited these days it is definitely worth making sure you call to guarantee a table.

Federal budget The 2020 federal Budget was great news for the Sunshine Coast hinterland with hundreds of millions of dollars invested in our region to set up our recovery and, in particular, to create jobs in communities like the Sunshine Coast.

Up to 60,000 people in Fisher will be getting up to $2,745 back in their pockets this year because of the tax relief brought forward in the Budget.

This will help us all to shop local, play local and stay local to keep our region’s businesses open and employing hinterland locals.

The federal government is also providing significant new tax incentives to the region’s 20,000 small businesses to encourage them to invest, grow and hire, as well as providing subsidies for employing more local young people.

On the Sunshine Coast the government is investing $95.2 million in further upgrades to the Bruce Highway between Caloundra Road and the Sunshine Motorway to support 680 jobs and get all of us home sooner and safer. In the hinterland we will benefit from a $100 million fund to build new tourism infrastructure in regional communities, as well as a $328.4 million to help agricultural businesses to get better access to export markets, and much more.

Congestion-busting funding It was fantastic to hear recently that the Queensland Government will provide $11 million, in addition to council’s $4.2 million, towards an extension of Third Avenue to Nicklin Way at Caloundra. This project will deliver much needed alternative access to the Caloundra CBD and beaches and take traffic away from the busy Caloundra Road roundabout. Pending confirmation of the federal government’s contribution, the $18.2 million project will be able to proceed.

The Queensland Government has also committed to provide $35 million for the Bells Creek arterial road extension to the Bruce Highway, which will provide a fast new connection between our Glass House townships, Aura and Caloundra, potentially in just a couple of years.

Have your say The Sunshine Coast community is invited to share ideas on proposed rail and commuter parking improvements as part of the Australian and Queensland government-funded $550 million Beerburrum to Nambour rail upgrade.

The upgrade is designed to reduce travel times, improve service reliability and increase parking.

New walking trail There’s a new trail to explore at the Maleny Community Precinct wetland, accessible off Porters Lane.

With more than 2km of trails, the network offers an easy walk through the wetlands with the chance to spot dozens of native bird species, frogs and other water-loving wildlife.

Noticeboard Probus good news Contributed by Norma McCormack Glass House Mountains Probus has voted to meet at the RSL, as in preCOVID days, on Wednesday, October 13 at 10am.

This will be a trial to see if we can come together observing social distancing and having our usual lunch. However, there will be new arrangements in that the food will be served to you by duty members. These arrangements are now in place to meet all the COVID Safe requirements. How good it will be to feel we are getting back to normal.

Unfortunately the barbeque at the lookout was not well attended, although some folk there did test their stamina with a good walk. Hope their muscles have recovered.

The ceremony was conducted by past district governor Rod Layt and secretary Justin Neubecker acted as his sponsor.

In other news, activities of the members have been severely restricted

by COVID-19. At our changeover the club distributed $10,500 to local notfor-profit organisations and $8,000 to Lions projects.

Our major fundraiser for this year will be the Glasshouse Country Local Business Directory, which will be distributed to all households in the local area stretching from Beerburrum to Mooloolah in January.

Harmonize Climbing rose This is a beautiful but vigorous shrubby climbing rose and would be a great addition along a sunny fence line. In spring, large clusters of small-medium sized stunning flowers emerge in a mix of orange, yellow and white colours and the special red-eye centre. When established, they grow to 2.5m across and will flower throughout their spring/summer season.

Nemesia are quick growing and look fantastic in bedding and borders, mass display, ground cover, rockeries, and containers and hanging baskets. They are easy to care for and give you almost year-round colour.

One family of plants dominates the Australian landscape and this is the Myrtle Family – Myrtaceae. Trades & Services Directory Digital probe flushes out unlawful plumbing work Queensland’s building watchdog has issued a public warning about unlawful advertising on well-known online sites of plumbing work.

The Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) issued the warning due to the potential harm to public health and safety and the financial impact that unlicensed plumbing work can have on home owners and the building and construction industry.

QBCC commissioner Brett Bassett said that when it came to regulated plumbing work, false advertising and unlicensed work were, quite simply, illegal and dangerous.

“Anyone who advertises to do plumbing work, including on digital platforms, must include their QBCC licence number and the name of their business, otherwise we’ll be coming after them,” Brett said.

As part of its targeted compliance of unlawful online advertising, the QBCC will use new technology to “scrape” social media advertising platforms to identify unlicensed individuals trying to work illegally.

“This digital tool is new technology enabling us to do our job properly, while helping to make the industry safer and less risky, and creating a more even playing field for all industry participants,” Brett said.

“I urge home owners who are thinking of getting someone to perform plumbing work to first use the free licence search on the QBCC website to ensure they hold the correct licence for the work.”

Unlicensed people advertising to do licensed work could receive a warning or a fine, be subjected to further audits, and potentially face additional regulatory action.

Sport Times are tumbling in the pool Beerwah Splash Swim Club’s competitive swimmers had everyone fooled at the St Andrew’s Swim Club long course preparation meet recently. They might have looked relaxed and laid back but they ripped through the water.

Grace kicked off the meet and set the bar high with a 15 second PB in the 400m freestyle during the Friday night session on October 2. Sarah, Keelee and Estelle kept the PBs coming with five PBs and four new events between them in the junior session on Saturday morning, October 3.

In the 100m freestyle race Estelle cut 8.9 seconds from her time while Sarah slashed her time by 11 seconds.

The senior swimmers kept up the pace in the afternoon session with Kael taking 11 seconds from her 100m backstroke, Dalton took

14 seconds from his 200m IM and

Seanna took a colossal 18.28 seconds from her 100m backstroke.

After a fantastic swim meet, where four new times were set, 19 PBs were made and almost two minutes were cut from times, the Beerwah Swim Club swimmers are looking forward to the return to club nights.

Beerwah Swim Club runs familyfriendly club nights on the second and fourth Thursday of each month during terms four and one, starting at 5pm.

Club nights are suitable for swimmers from five years and up, as long as you can swim 12.5m.

Sport Maleny Bowls Club

Contributed by Miles Allen We’ve seen some great action on the green during the past two weeks and the weather has been ideal for bowls.

In our monthly pairs competition, the scores were so close that the result was decided by a count back.

Bill Edwards and Noel Greene from Kilcoy narrowly beat Brian and Sally Squires from Glass House and the winners of the second round were Mick and Wendy Bulger from Maleny.

We sent two teams to Mapleton for their monthly pairs competition. John Williams consistently put down some great bowls and showed that any team from Maleny is a force to be reckoned with. However, the only prize winner from Maleny was Joe Walters who beat off a strong field to win a meat voucher in the raffle. Overall winners were the formidable team of Ed Haller and Rob Shoyer who had the home advantage.

Our twilight bowls starts again on Wednesday, October 14 and already some good-natured sledging has started. Arrive at 5.45pm to get your name down and enjoy a delicious burger and some good company. Teams will be compiled and the competition will run until mid-December. Turn up and you are

On Tuesday, October 6 Sandra Kapetanic and Brett Gillis demolished the opposition and Curley Petersen won the game of scroungers.

Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker On the last Sunday in September Kath Smith made a meal of Ken Barker beating him 15-4 while Sarah Widin had a convincing win over Vince Carbery 21-11. On lawn two there was an entertaining game of doubles between a team of Helen Andrews and Wallace Roy who edged out Priscilla Vickers and Stuart Craig, who gave them a real fright, 8-7.

Vince and Ken competed to see who could make the most fundamental errors in their game on Thursday, October 1. Perhaps it was the later start with the onset of summer times. Short roquets were missed.

Simple approach shots were fluffed.

Hoops were bombed. Fortunately an approaching storm allowed an early cessation and, with the scores at 4-3 in Vince’s favour, they both claimed

unfinished game status for the debacle.

Sarah, Gillian Bradley, Donna Manning and Lynette Evans were much more sensible playing a game where no scores were recorded.

Sunday, October 4 saw the welcome return to the lawn of Val Carbery who teamed up with Stuart Craig to beat Helen Andrews and Janelle Wilson 16-4. Miggy Mackey played well against Vince despite being beaten 16-12.

Wallace and Gillian finished ahead of Lynette and Vince 7-5 on lawn two while on lawn one Bev Sockhill and Val played well to beat Janelle 9-4.

Kath and Ken came home on a wet sail to end up ahead of Alice Spittle and Sarah 15-7.

Our excellent lawns are on the right side of the Maleny Showground. We now meet at 2pm for a 2.30pm start for all social play games on Thursdays and Sundays. Coaching is still from 8–10am on Saturday mornings until further notice.
