The Bondi Vet at Landsborough

By Lea Parkes A visit to most workplaces by Dr Chris Brown (the Bondi Vet) would ruffle a few feathers with the ladies.

However at Twinnies Seabird and Pelican Rescue – Paula and Bridgett Powers remained their unflappable selves when he came to film part of his television series at their facility on Steve Irwin Way at Landsborough.

The girls stayed focused on the task at hand which was assisting Chris in his preparation for surgery on a two-month-old pelican – a girl called Johnnie.

The pelican was one of a group that the RSPCA had rescued at Wivenhoe Dam following flooding there in January. The baby pelicans were washed out of the rookery where they were being cared for by their parents.

The Twinnies sister Mischele, who works with the Rescue Service, said it is highly uncommon for pelicans as young as this to be cared for in captivity, so there isn’t any research to guide them.

When the team from Bondi Vet approached the Twinnies about Dr Chris coming for a visit, his timing was spot on, with Johnnie needing to have surgery on a ruptured air sac, and Dr Chris being able to include it as part of his show.

Dr Chris explained that while it wasn’t surgery that he had undertaken before, he’d done plenty of planning for it in the previous few days, and that part of the preparation included visualising himself doing the surgery.

From the response we got from a photo of Sarah (our lovely receptionist) myself and Dr Chris Brown on our Facebook page – it was pretty clear that he has plenty of fans locally.

However one thing that was even clearer on the day is that The Bondi Vet is definitely a fan of the Twinnies and their work, describing them as very special and unique.

Contributed by Carmel Schenk On the recent Clean up Australia Day, Rose Daley organised a group of volunteers to clean up Bells Creek Road, Beerwah. This area is known to locals as mostly forestry, which seems to be a common dumping area for unwanted tyres, mattress, TV's, fridges, household rubbish, garden waste and unwanted mobile phones.

Day for quite some time did a fantastic job.

One of the most memorable moments of the day was when they ended leg up in an 8" mud puddle!

Thanks must also go to the local businesses who supported this venture, in particular the IGA Beerwah who supplied bottled water and Daleys Turf providing the use of their vehicles to collect the rubbish, then cooked up fantastic sausage sizzle on completion for all the volunteers.

All volunteers worked under extreme conditions being so wet, then humid, but overall a total of 16 cubic metres of rubbish was collected.

Thanks to the sponsors and to the volunteers who turned up on the day.

Work on Old Landsborough Road Sunshine Coast Council is about to start road rehabilitation work on Old Landsborough Road, Beerwah.

Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said the section of road had progressively deteriorated over several severe wet weather events.

“It’s a well-used road for hinterland locals and I’m sure they’ll be relieved that work on the storm damaged section of a key connection road is about to get underway.

“Council has been working on the Greber Road floodway drainage project and now that’s substantially complete, the Old Landsborough Road work can finally begin.

“Initial preparations started on 5 March and depending on weather conditions, it’s expected the road will be strengthened and water proofed towards the end of March.

“The community has been patient waiting for the work to get underway and I hope that they are not too inconvenienced during the time it takes to complete.

“Traffic controllers will be on site during construction and we’re expecting some long delays at some stages of the roads reconstruction but overall I trust the impact on traffic or pedestrians will be kept to a minimum,” he said.

Old Landsborough Road was significantly damaged by the 2011 flood events, after which Council applied for Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery funding to assist with the infrastructure repairs.

This funding is still to be approved by the State Government; however, due to the ongoing deterioration of the road, Council has made the funds available now to undertake a road restoration project ($300,000) and to link in with the Greber Road drainage project ($270,000).

Aligning the two projects is smart planning, as completing one and starting the other at some time in the future would mean ripping up previously finished works – something which would not make good sense.

The road rehabilitation will be starting from Greber Road and running to the drainage culverts approximately 575m north.

Council expects to claim this money back as part of the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery funding after the project is complete.

Along with the major road restoration project is a road surface reseal from the drainage culverts north to Clarkes Road. This component is to be funded from Council’s Reseal and Rehabilitation program, and will cost approximately $50,000.

When seconds count For the next few months Glass House Mountains local Brian Hughes will be the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) Acting Officer-in-Charge at Beerwah Ambulance Station.

I was fortunate enough to catch up with Brian last week for a chat; I quickly discovered that he loves living in Glass House Mountains, which his wife Julie, a Flight Intensive Care Paramedic working on helicopters, and daughter have called home for the last four years.

Brian is passionate about being a paramedic and he has a strong belief in the importance of community education. In fact in 2011, he was presented with an Australia Day award for his services in Community Education.

He was keen to make sure that GCNews could spread the message of the importance to local residents that, in an emergency, the most important thing is to call triple zero (000).

Brian says it’s critical to a paramedic to be able to get the absolute best medical outcome for each and every patient they care for.

“We still have residents phoning the Beerwah Ambulance Station to report an emergency and presenting themselves at the Ambulance Station,” Brian said.

“In an emergency these actions potentially delay the medical treatment available to the patient, which in turn means you can be putting a life at risk.”

initiate appropriate treatment on a patient from the moment they arrive on the scene.

With the communication technology that is available today, the Ambulance Service is able to monitor the exact location of every vehicle and when a call comes in they can immediately direct the nearest appropriate vehicle, which may not necessarily be from the local station.

The result of calling triple zero (000) instead of phoning or arriving at the station, will ensure the best possible treatment and when required, transport to the most appropriate hospital.

In some emergency cases where every second counts, these factors can make all the difference in saving the life of a patient.

This reinforces Brian’s message of why it is crucial to follow the correct process in a medical emergency.

Brian explained that the department’s highly trained Emergency Medical Dispatchers (EMD’s) can quickly ascertain the patient’s medical requirements and will swiftly dispatch the most appropriate medical help to their location.

While the Paramedics are on their way, the EMDs can also provide necessary advice over the phone.

“On that note, it is important to be as helpful as possible to the EMD on the other end of the line to ensure the quickest response,” Brian said.

“While it may be difficult to do, it is really important that you remain as calm as possible, trust the EMD, be aware of your surroundings and provide as much information as you can.

“I cannot stress enough that triple zero (000) is the only number to call if you are experiencing a medical emergency, no matter where you live or what time of the day or night," he said.

While arriving at a hospital in an ambulance may not guarantee that you will be seen before other emergency patients – the paramedics are able to provide the most accurate information on your medical condition to the hospital staff for their assessment.

“If you have a Medically Authorised Ambulance Transport Authority signed by a Medical Practitioner and need to call for non-urgent medical transport, call 13 12 33.

“However, if in doubt, always dial triple zero (000) without delay.”

No need for bat hysteria The recent death of a boy in north Queensland from the bat-borne Lyssavirus has again triggered calls for bat populations to be culled or forcibly moved-on from populated areas.

With bat colonies being found locally at places such as Peachester and Landsborough, many locals may also be feeling uneasy with their presence.

While many may see the calls for culling or moving colonies on as simple solutions, others who are more familiar with bat behaviour and ecology say that culling and dispersal is ill-informed and irresponsible.

Bat Conservation and Rescue QLD President Louise Saunders says wildlife rescuers are saddened by the death of the boy from Australian Bat Lyssavirus and feel a great deal of sympathy for his family.

“But killing and dispersing flying-foxes won’t help keep people safe and may increase the risk of contact between people and bats as well as being terrible for flying-foxes and the environment.

“People in prominent positions really need to check their facts and ensure their advice is based on medical and scientific fact rather than prejudice and gut instinct,” Ms Saunders said.

“Australian Bat Lyssavirus is an extremely rare disease in humans. Only two people are known to have caught it from flying-foxes and one from a micro-bat. The latest case is the first in more than 14 years.

“As long as people do not handle flying-foxes, having them roost near homes or feed in gardens or parks is safe.

“If people are bitten or scratched, the disease can be prevented by a vaccination.

“People are at most risk of a bite or scratch if they try to remove or rescue flying-foxes entangled in backyard netting over fruit trees or caught on barbed wire fences.

“It’s vital that people call a wildlife rescue organisation rather than try to help flying-foxes themselves.

Mr Andrew Powell, Member for Glass House and Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection said now is not the time for politics or hysteria.

“The Newman Government had taken two commitments regarding flying foxes to the election.

“The first was to reintroduce lethal damage mitigation permits (DMPs) for farmers and fruit growers, and the second was to work with councils in managing urban flying fox roosts.

“And we have delivered on both,” Mr Powell said.

In September the Newman Government changed legislation to again allow fruit growers to access lethal damage mitigation permits to protect crops.

He urged people to stay away from flying foxes, dead or alive.

If you see an injured bat, you can call the local wildlife rescue service WILVOS on 5441 6200 (24 hours / 7 days).

Local photographer Kathy Hill from Whisper Images said they’re now photographing for the second edition with places filling fast.

“The photo shoot is done on location such as a park, beach or bush setting,” Kathy said.

The participation fee to be part of the book is just $75.00 which is donated to the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge at Sippy Creek to help them continue the wonderful work they do there.

From the 2012 edition the animal refuge received over $5,000 from the project and this year the photographers are hoping to triple that amount.

Beerwah Lions Youth of the Year Beerwah High School student Phoebe Slater recently become the overall winner in the Beerwah Lions Clubs, Youth of the Year. Phoebe will now go on to contest the Lions District Finals.

Phoebe gave a very illuminating address on how big business monopoly is taking over a huge share of the Australian retail market, cleverly comparing it to the game of Monopoly.

Other Beerwah High School students competing included: Connor Bosch who talked about the problems with drugs in sport.

Mana Taripo: Mana’s topic was ‘What’s belief’, an address on misleading and biased journalism.

Talbot Speechley: Talbot talked on Australian constitutional change and recognition of indigenous rights and policy.

Travis Bosch: Travis presented a thought provoking address on gun control in Australia, comparing it to control in America. Travis went on to present convincing statistics on mass homicides and single gun related homicide between the two nations.

Earlier all contestants were given four minutes to answer two impromptu questions.

1. Courts today are pretty much a joke, as a juvenile offender stated in a recent newspaper.

Is our justice system to lenient on young people who commit crime?

2. What impact does social media; Face-book and Twitter have on our society?

While the angle of responses varied, each one presented a well thought out and informed point of view.

What’s in a name?

Last week C Fryer sent a letter to us trying to establish whether it was Glass House Mountains or Glasshouse Mountains and we have had plenty of response to clarify her question.

According to the Queensland Place Names section of the Department of Natural Resources and Mines website, the name of the township was officially gazetted as ‘Glass House Mountains’, but no gazettal date was given.

Bernie O’Mara made us aware that this question has been troubling locals for a long time, and fortunately for us he still had the confirmation that in 1987 the United Fruit Growers Co-operative Association Limited put the same question to the Queensland Place Names Board.

They received the same response as we discovered through our research – it is Glass House Mountains.

The railway station on the other hand has had a potted history. The following is an extract from the Brisbane Courier Saturday, February 28 1914, page 4).

‘Since 1891 the station at 44 miles 15 chains (between Beerburrum and Beerwah), on the North Coast line, has been known as "Glass Mountains." In order to be historically correct the approval of the Governor in Council has been secured to renaming the station Glass House Mountains.’

Bernie could also vouch for this and he provided a copy of a photo that featured the station’s signage. We asked what his views were about why he thought Mountains wasn’t included in the name of the train station – and having worked for Queensland Rail for over 50 years his opinion was that the length of the name was probably too long for the boards.

Olympian visits local triathlete club Recently the newly formed Ngungun Triathlon Club was really excited to welcome special guest Emma Jackson, Australian Olympic Triathlete to their training session at the Beerwah Pool.

Emma, who was U23 World Triathlon Champion in 2010, and 8th at the London Olympics in 2012 in only her second season as an elite triathlete.

She had a great time interacting with some of the younger triathlon members and watching what was an excellent training session by some of our very own up and coming junior triathletes.

Emma was extremely approachable and gracious in sharing her achievements to date. The children got to see firsthand Emma's London Olympic uniform, signed by the whole Olympic Team, her trophies she has won, and even try on her medals as she passed her belongings around the group.

Emma answered questions from the children.

One question put to Emma by one of the younger members of the club was what her longest bike ride was.

Her answer of 200k impressed both the children and the adults present. Emma's visit was inspirational for all the club members, and before leaving she was presented with a Ngungun Triathlon Club official shirt and cap.

The Nyounguns (ages five to 10), train on a Monday afternoon at the Beerwah Pool from 3.30pm to 4.30pm with a combination of games, swimming, riding and running.

The Nyounguns Development Program is held on a Tuesday at 6.30am to 7.30am at Skippy Park, and on Thursdays at 6.30am to 7.30am at Beerwah Pool.

The aim of Ngungun Triathlon Club is to promote triathlon as a healthy activity for all ages and abilities whilst maintaining a family friendly focus.

Community News Beerwah Writers Group

Contributed by Shirley Moore The group has resumed after the Christmas Break at a well attended meeting chaired by Paul Stevens.

There was discussion on the overwhelming success of the publication of our children's book ‘The Witches of the Hinterland’ which we produced last Christmas; it was reprinted three times due to popularity.

A quantity of these books are still available for $10.00 each.

Members discussed the possibility of a further production for Christmas 2013.

Members involved in producing the book were congratulated, as were the contributing authors of a wide variety of stories.

Both magazines printed last year: ‘Five Minute Tales’ edited by Barbara Ramadge-Ross and her helpers also received congratulations.

The magazines will continue to be produced this year.

Members read homework pieces of stories titled a 'Piece of Wood' which were imaginative and entertaining, some humorous and others informative.

David Christmas gave a talk on the benefits of ‘Smash Words’. Steve Papa informed us on the advantages of having a Blog site. Two new members were welcomed.

Meetings are held on the second and fourth Friday's of each month at the meeting room at the Beerwah Library.

Graham Leach Memorial Chaplaincy Concert

The concert will help raise funds for Chaplaincies in Primary Schools and the Beerwah State High School in Glasshouse Country. It will be held from 2.00pm on Sunday, April 21 at the Baptist Church in Roberts Road, Beerwah.

The medical literature says infantile colic is difficult to diagnose and that if it is colic, most children will ‘outgrow it’ by 12 weeks of age.

The common treatment for infantile colic includes drugs like dimethicone, FROM * advice to change formula, or to ‘wait it out’ as the baby will eventually ‘outgrow it’. Most of these treatments, however, haven’t offered parents FROM * and babies the relief hoped for.

There is a better option! Several weeks of sleepless nights and living with a baby in pain can seem like forever. Chiropractors have known that specific spinal adjustments can get to the cause of what is ailing your child. There are numerous case studies where infants with colic have been relieved of their painful symptoms with chiropractic care.

In one study, 316 infants with moderate to severe colic were adjusted.

94 per cent of the children within 14 days of chiropractic care (usually three visits) showed a satisfactory response. After four weeks, the FROM improvements were maintained. New playgroup for Glass House Mountains Contributed by Jodie Russell It has been a long standing vision for the Glass House Mountains State School to establish a playgroup at the school, so that children under five can learn, play and socialise in a familiar school environment.

This year with the Prep A Classroom not being used, school principal Elizabeth Sommers was pleased to be able to instigate the forming of a playgroup to be held each Tuesday of the school term from 9.00am - 11.00am.

Playgroup leader Jodie Russell said many parents attended the initial meeting to discuss the idea and as a result, the first playgroup commenced on Tuesday, February 19. It was well attended with the children definitely enjoying the edible craft activities.

Jodie said the playgroup gives parents and children the opportunity to socialise and interact with other parents and children from the local area.

“It has created a forum for parents to share ideas on parenting, to contribute craft activities and stories to the playgroup as well as to have a good chin wag, something all parents need,” she said.

“Children who attended last week got to ice biscuits and make faces with sultanas, liquorice and sprinkles, as well as making edible necklaces.

That was the introduction of our guest speaker, Sandi Johnstone, Waste 2 Resource Education Program of the Sunshine Coast Council.

Her talk mainly focussed on composting with the aim of getting organic waste out of landfill.

Composting isn’t difficult but one of the simplest methods is to dig a trench somewhere in your

garden and bury all food scraps.

That was followed by the AGM and many thanks to the outgoing office bearers and congratulations to the incoming office bearers.

Congratulations to Nicholas, Lanara, Erin and Benjamin. We wish you every success in the years to come. Our first meeting was held at Cath’s home where we welcomed Eileen, Mirium and Rimini and enjoyed some craft work. We held the first part of the cooking competition which was judged the morning of our first markets.

Landsborough local Hollie Rowe who is a 14-yearold Year 10 student with gorgeous long flowing locks has been brave and signed up for this years’ Leukaemia Foundation’s Shave for a Cure.

Hollie said she first became interested in the shave for a cure last year when a friend at school did it and she thought that was a pretty amazing thing for her to do. Then last year one of her mum’s friends was diagnosed with cancer. Hollie said after a lot of treatment, thankfully she was now ok.

“Although her cancer was not leukemia, it gave me all the motivation I needed to do something.

I really wanted to help out in some way,” she said.

“I decided the world’s greatest shave was a great way for me to try and raise some money and make a contribution.”

Peter Seedy has organised for Hollie to hold a shave for a cure night at the Landsborough Hotel on Saturday, March 16, kicking off around 7.00pm.

Welding the magic clippers on the night will be Gwen from the Landsborough Barber on Railway Parade, and there is a good chance that Peter will go the shave as well.

Hollie is hoping that plenty of locals will come along and take part by either paying to get their head shaved or coloured for a bit of fun or just to give a donation.

By Lea Parkes So far GCNews have featured some enthusiastic teenage girls who are going to make a dramatic difference to their long flowing hair when they participate in the upcoming ‘World’s Greatest Shave’.

Last Friday we met another local - Leo Petrie of Glass House Mountains. Leo might be way past his teenage years, but his enthusiasm for life and for fundraising are just as commendable.

Although he won’t be losing long hair, he will be having his quite full beard coming off as well as the hair on his head.

So we are definitely looking forward to seeing the transformation in Leo’s after photos.

At this stage, he plans to go under the clippers down at Club Glasshouse – date yet to be confirmed.

Year 8s rise to the challenge

School News Drews a keen cyclist Landsborough State School student, Drew Ketley, 10, is combining his passion for cycling with family adventures and assisting charities along the way.

On February 24, Drew rode 25km from Redcliffe to Chermside in the Cycle of Giving charity ride raising awareness of organ donor registration.

His younger brother Liam is following in his footsteps and set a blistering pace in the 10km ride of this event with his grandfather.

Drew is currently in training for the 8 day Cycle QLD ride taking place in September around the Atherton Tablelands. Covering an average of 70km per day, Drew will be riding with three generations of his family (grandmother, aunt, uncle and his mother).

In preparation for the 490km ride in September, Drew will be building up his fitness levels with many more family and charity rides throughout the year.

Having only just turned 10-years-old, Drew is already doing his bit. He no doubt has a very active and exciting future ahead of him.

Earn and learn success

Contributed by Kritina De Clara A huge thank-you to the community for supporting Beerburrum State School in the Woolworths Earn and Learn promotion held in 2012. The school recently received some fabulous resources - a fantastic variety of board games & a range of musical instruments. Students and teaching staff are very excited about getting these new resources into the classrooms. The board games will be a fantastic learning tool for math’s, learning strategies, the basics of taking it in turns and just plain old fun! The students are also very excited to have new musical instruments and are keen to learn how to play them.

This equipment will make a significant difference to our music classes. Once again a huge thankyou to everyone in the community who supported Beerburrum State School.

Dust off your cowboy boots and warm up your ‘yeehahs’

Settling into high school has always been a rite of passage met by young people with a certain degree of fear and trepidation. But the 2013 cohort of Year 8 students at Beerwah State High has proven that there is a whole lot of fun to be had as well by participating in the Year 8 Challenge Day. Under the guidance and instruction of the Senior Student Leadership Team, the Year 8 students recently spent a half day combining physical strength, keen intellect and cooperation, working with others to conquer a series of challenges better than 13 other teams.

“It was awesome fun. I really enjoyed The Spider’s Web where we had to get our entire group through the web without touching any part of it or using the same hole twice,” commented one student.

The serious side to what was a fun day is that the students experienced success through challenge, which when applied to life experiences develops strength of character and creative problem solving skills. It was a great opportunity for the seniors to work closely with their Year 8’s early in the year.

The winning team proudly received a tuckshop voucher.

The second annual Mooloolah Community Bush Dance is happening, on Friday, March 22, from 6.00pm - 9.00pm in Mooloolah State School hall.

Bushland Boogie, a lively piano accordion-banjo-guitar trio will be back again to entertain the crowd and keep the lines moving and toes tapping. There will be juicy corn cobs, sausages sizzling and scrumptious steak burgers, cold drinks and this year, a licensed liquor area.

Outrank Your Competition

LOGIN ID: PASSWORD: Does that configuration make you a little bit anxious? We now have passwords for PC, phone, email account, broadband account, online banking, iTunes (apple ID), Facebook, twitter, Skype, Google account, LinkedIn, Instagram, etc. etc. For those of us without photographic memories it’s becoming almost impossible to keep up!

You must already know it’s not wise to use one password for everything, and one of the latest cyber hooligan trends is email hacking. If your email address is joebloggs789@whatever.com. au and your password is jbloggs89 then you’re asking for trouble. A password should never be able to be associated with your actual account or your personal identity. For online needs, have a password comprised of letters (upper and lower case) and numbers +/or symbols, which is seemingly complex but logical to you.

At any time I have over 30 accounts requiring passwords and I sometimes can’t remember what I had for breakfast! However, I never lose a password, because I keep them all recorded. You can keep a record in several ways: a discreet notebook by your PC (be very careful about banking details), a document saved on your desktop (most reputable ‘Wordlike’ programs give you the option to password protect the document), or an App on your phone. I keep a database of my accounts and passwords, and also password protect the database! If you go the electronic way as I have, you should back that up too! Password protecting your PC is also sound advice!

It is proven that passwords do not guarantee protection, but, unless you don’t use any online services like phone banking etc., then you really have no choice. So, to save you hassle and time, keep a safe record (and do it NOW, if you’re like me 24 hours could be too late!) and keep that record where you can quickly access it. Good luck. (And to those of you with photographic memories – raspberries….!)

When it comes to bettering your website’s Google rankings, there’s a myriad of different techniques you can use, but how do you know when you’ve done enough to kick off your Google ladder climb, and where do you start? There’s actually a fairly straightforward technique that you can use as your starting point - check out the competition and go one better!

When you Google search some keywords for which you would like your website to rank highly, don’t just scroll past all of the top entries until you find your own... stop and take a look at a couple of those top entries. You may gain some real insight into what they’re doing which you’re not.

Firstly, take a look at your competition’s general site layout and informational content.

To rank highly, your own site content needs to be relevant and useful to your industry, and to the keywords upon which you have been searching.

Try to focus on two - three different keywords or keyword phrases on each page of your website, because Google does not rank your entire site in one go... instead it ranks each page on your site individually, so if each page has a different topic then each page will rank more highly for keywords related to that topic.

Right-click on a competitor’s website and select the 'View Source' option. This will show you the site’s raw code view... just do a text search on this code to find the terms: 'description', 'title', 'keywords', 'h1', 'h2' and 'h3'. These are the site’s 'meta-tags' and 'heading tags'. Take a look at the keywords your competitor is using straight after these various tags. This will give you an idea of what you should be putting in your own site to start ranking on Google page 1.

Bob McLean The first quarter of 2013 has almost passed with a change in the weather from being dry and hot to windy and wet. Australia day saw the end of good business conditions that attracted record numbers of tourists to our region.

The clean up after wind damage and four days without power was difficult for local businesses but now it is back to trying to make a dollar.

The challenge for Glasshouse Country is how does business attract the visitors to stay and shop in our communities, while enjoying the attractions Glasshouse Country offers?

The economic development unit of Sunshine Coast Council has staff available to work with prospective new business operators to ensure the success of their new ventures and to improve established businesses.

The untapped asset for Glasshouse Country is to be recognised as a Recreational Vehicle (RV) friendly destination.

The facilities available locally now, attract a small percentage of this traveling market. The information supplied by the CMCA & ACC as the bodies representing the RV community advise that each of these RV units will spend approximately $100.00 a day in welcoming towns.

Communities that are not welcoming, the CB radio will tell other travellers and they will drive on to another friendly town.

I attended Cr Jenny McKay’s community breakfast in Mooloolah recently; this provided an opportunity to meet with local business operators.

The Mooloolah business community is within the footprint of the Glasshouse Country Chamber, the chamber has a small number of Members in Mooloolah with the intention to attract more members from this business community.

The chamber will hold monthly meetings in most of the communities in the area. The April meeting will be held at the Landsborough Sports and Recreation Club on Wednesday, April 17.

This networking evening with a 5.15pm for 5.45pm start and 7.30pm finish will be an opportunity for new, existing and intending members to experience the value of communicating with business operators of like minds and goals.

Workshop great value

On Sunday, February 24, I attended a ‘Large Animal Awareness Rescue Course’ in Peachester Hall. It was run by the Qld Horse Council, and organised with them by Lizzie and Rod Peterson.

At a cost of $100.00, with full workshop, instruction, morning tea, lunch, and a quality textbook to cover the course – I have to say – it was phenomenally good value for money and a wonderful ‘skill’ to have in the event of such an emergency.

It was to learn correct and safe methods to deal with large (and potentially explosive) animals in the event of entrapment or emergency, to better ensure a safe outcome for all concerned. (Thanks also to the large equine ‘mannequin’ who also attended, he was incredibly well behaved).

Only one question – why were there only 12 of us? This area is loaded with horse / cattle owners, veterinary staff, emergency personnel and pony clubs etc. I just need to say, you missed a fantastic opportunity, and the acquisition of a very worthwhile set of skills – and right on your own doorstep!

Lizzie and Rod made a great personal attempt to inform the locals of this event. If anyone with an interest who did not make this workshop sees another coming up, I recommend that you attend.

Seriously, $100.00 was peanuts for the day, and it may save lives, valuable stock and heartache.

You may think it would never ‘happen to you or your horse’ - but it can.

I would like to thank Lizzie and Rod on behalf of the community and the animals, for organising this event. Very much appreciated and very worthwhile to attend.

Restored faith

On Sunday, February 24, at the height of the downpour of rain, we noticed that our waste water was slow to drain away. Even flushing a toilet was taking some time to drain. Because of the heavy rain and previous heavy rainfall, we assumed that the rain was the cause. However by Monday morning the drains were failing to work at all. I rang my neighbour to see if they were having any problems as they are on the same sewerage line, but they said all was well.

I saw that Unity Water had a 24 hour emergency number and at 7.00am it was answered immediately by the on duty staff member. He took all details and by 9.00am a gang of three men arrived. At this time it was raining torrentially but this did not deter the guys from carrying out some investigations. We tried to get them to wait until the rain abated but to no avail. They just carried on as if the sun was shining. It took until 12.30pm before they were able to clear the blockage and then they promised to return when the camera unit was available to further explore the problem. During this entire period of time the rain never let up.

We thought it was admirable that these three fellows were prepared to work in what might be described as deplorable conditions. The purpose of this letter is to commend them for a job well done. No names were taken but the guys will know who they are and no doubt so will their bosses. Well done guys....you restore our faith in Aussie tradesmen.

Relevant council officers take note

I have just read ‘A bit of thought would be just great’ in March 6 edition and would like to add these additional comments which I hope will attract the attention of relevant Council officers.

I am also wheelchair dependent, and rely on others to push me around on my increasingly rare outings in my local area. When I first moved here from Canberra my family used to take me for walks so I could come to know my new environment. I find Beerwah and surrounding areas the most wheelchair unfriendly areas I have visited and agree with the previous writer that many corners and footpaths are very dangerous. The wheelchair access is too steep and many are badly aligned and difficult for all but the strongest of helpers to access without endangering me or injuring themselves.

Regarding Greg Brown’s article ‘Is Beerwah the untidy town award winner’ (GCNews Wednesday, March 6) President of the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce, Bob McLean, has got it right in one when he says, it is clear Main Roads don’t care. Main Roads care about the Beerwah roundabout about as much as they care about Steve Irwin Way. Zilch.

Steve Irwin Way between Glass House Mountains and Landsborough is akin to a road in a third world country. This road is in an appalling condition.

The minute it rains, potholes appear in the road surface. Trucks pound out the material in these potholes almost as quick as it takes to place it in them. This road has been inadequately patched so many times it is now dangerous.

If Premier Newman wants to save a bit more public service money, he should look to getting rid of the Main Roads people in charge of Steve Irwin Way, because they are clearly not doing their job.

Politicians, Councilors and Main Roads let’s see some action, fix Steve Irwin Way now!

Untidy town – safety issue

I was interested in the article in last week’s GCNews re: Beerwah being in the running for the untidy town award, the main eyesore being the roundabout at the Roberts Road and Simpson Street intersection.

All jokes aside, the overgrown state of this roundabout is in my view quite dangerous.

Drivers approaching the roundabout on the link road from Peachester Road are required to give way to traffic coming around the roundabout from the bridge, as well as traffic entering from Roberts Road.

Due to the current overgrown state of the roundabout, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to see traffic coming around the roundabout until it’s right on top of you.

Could I suggest to whoever’s responsible, that they give this roundabout a badly needed face lift, then employ one of the numerous gardening contractors in town to keep it tidy.

Referring to Greg Browns article and Colin Batch’s letter in last week’s GCNews I am in total agreement.

In the last fortnight I have had occasion to visit Cooroy, Pomona, Tewantin, Asltonville and Bangalow in northern NSW. All these are small towns but are so different in appearance to Beerwah.

We present as a very poor cousin to them!

The maintenance and presence is so much more positive than ours.

There is a definite welcoming entrance to these towns. When you enter Beerwah you can’t even see our nameplace and it is dirty and overgrown.

The entrance to town is the Big Mower Shop which dominates the corner. Where is the landscaping around our signage? Even a few large trees and garden beds would help.

Also where do you go when you exit on the overpass?

It has had very little maintenance and looks like an overgrown swamp. People end up at a set of lights and a Woolworth’s supermarket. Is that all the town offers?

In the other small towns mentioned there are very few empty premises and lots of people and visitors walking around town. We pay our council rates and state government levies and deserve the same attention as these other towns. I also agree the intersection at Old Gympie Road and Peachester Road needs major improvement – it needs drainage, road repairs, maintenance (the fallen tree has been there for two months). It is very dangerous and a draw card for hoons.

Don’t get me wrong – I love living here – the people are wonderful and caring, the lifestyle is relaxed and the scenery is to die for, but the presentation of our town belies this and our community deserves so much more attention. I’m very concerned.

Tree slaughter

We were in attendance at the ‘Glass House tree massacre’ and witnessed the gorgeous trees that were home to hundreds of birds and a tonne of insects, as they were slaughtered and turned into garden mulch. We spoke at length to a rep from the lopping business who said he had been approached by many residents during the morning expressing their shock and disgust at what was happening.

It is not the case that these birds will just ‘find another tree’ to live in, as animals are extremely territorial and defend their homes zealously. As with everything else in this world, there is absolutely no consideration for those at our mercy when it comes to money.

We have requested the body corporate provide reasons as to why no alternative was sought and why no community consultation was undertaken.

This may be private property but we do not ‘own’ wildlife and have a duty of care to ensure their protection. It seems humans won’t be completely happy until they concrete any sign of nature.

I caught up with a number of locals last week in Beerwah as part of my now regular ‘out and about’ meetings. Thanks to everyone who shared their stories, concerns and aspirations on a wide range of topics. Here’s a brief summary of some of the things that came up in discussion.

The impact of the wet weather was certainly on people’s minds, particularly the power outages. I had some good discussions about how to improve council’s response in disaster events such as the possibility of utilising public noticeboards as a place for communication when people can no longer access the internet and information online. The radio is a really important source of information during emergency events and now, in-between storms, you might want to think about how you can be prepared for future power outages. On a side note, when the wild weather was hurtling down I was reminded about how good it is to be part of a country community when neighbours came along and helped me clear trees across the road.

Trails for walking and cycling, especially between Glass House and Beerwah, was another topic of discussion. There are a number of gaps along the current route and there are a few options on where to take a pathway between the towns and off the main road. I’m a huge supporter of active transport options and pathway connectivity between schools, town centres and urban areas makes sense.

The festive season and Christmas tree lights in Beerwah was talked about and it subsequently reinforced my view that the festive strategy for Glass House Mountains, Landsborough and Beerwah needs to be improved through a closer partnership with the community. A report on a review of the Festive Season Strategy will be presented to council in the coming months.

My next ‘out and about’ meeting is on Friday, March 22 at Glass House Mountains Visitor Information Centre between 1.00pm and 3.00pm.

There was some discussion about the future of the Mooloolah Pool and it looks like Education Queensland will be taking steps to ensure ongoing community access.

Environment Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Homes for Wildlife

By Gwen Malcolm In a recent article I wrote of the value of fauna boxes as homes for gliders and other wildlife.

As a species, humans have created a shortage of wildlife homes by clearing old growth forest with tree hollows. Many of these have taken 150 to 200 years to develop. Unfortunately some of the best hollow forming trees are Scribbly Gums or Eucalyptus racemosa, which are feared because of their tendency to drop limbs.

This of course is the point at which insect damage occurs in the tree giving rise to the eroded section or ‘hollow’.

If we must clear our old growth trees we can replace them with artificial boxes. While boxes of various sizes and shapes are designed for different species, we cannot always choose which creature will inhabit!

Gliders will make a home in a parrot box and parrots will take over a possum box!

It is always a delight to find parrots, possums, or gliders in your boxes, but other not so pleasant critters can also check them out. In the past I have used various methods to remove the introduced honey bee from a glider box. Recently I was even more upset to find a Goanna or Lace Monitor leaving my bird box obviously on the lookout for eggs. Since the box had been occupied by a possum I believe the Goanna went away hungry. Of course I accept that these large lizards clean up a lot of our waste and they too need a home!

Our local catchments have been overflowing recently, and all the pools of water are great for local frog populations.

But can you tell the difference between a Striped Marsh Frog, a Giant Barred Frog and a Cane Toad?

Mooloolah River Waterwatch & Landcare ran another successful Frog Workshop recently. Twenty four adults and eight children attended the workshop which turned out to be an amazing night. Six species of frogs were seen and eight were heard.

The endangered Giant Barred Frog (Mixophyes literalis) was the hot topic of the night with many taking close up photographs.

A thank you to QLD Frog Society, Sunshine Coast Council and the many volunteers that helped to make the night a great success.

Mooloolah Pharmacy Grant

We were very lucky to win a grant from Mooloolah Pharmacy to conduct a community tree plant and barbeque in the Mooloolah Recreation Reserve as part of Mooloolah’s 150 year celebrations.

The grant will clean-up the masses of lantana and broadleaf pepper and plant the area with native trees for everyone in the community to enjoy.

Watch this space for information on dates and times for the community tree plant. We would love residents of Mooloolah to be involved in creating a resource that the community can be proud of.

Happenings Out and About Come and Try Day Recently Sunshine Coast Council organised a Come and Try day at the Beerwah Sportsgrounds to give parents and kids some ideas for winter sports. As the day followed on from a wet weekend the kids weren’t able to go out onto the field for a kick around.

They made do with the small grassy area beside the club house – with the kids making the most of being able to get outside.

Britney Dale of Glass House Mountains is a member of the Goodwin Performing Art team that will compete in the World Championships of Performing Arts in Hollywood, California.

Thiele Hobbs Suncoast Church Hinterland I had the pleasure of attending my niece’s wedding on the weekend. It was a beautiful and memorable day though it rained practically all day! After the wedding, I looked back over the photos on my phone and couldn’t help but smile at this young, happy couple in snapshots of umbrellas and gumboots! Though it was raining outside, the moment the bride stepped inside the church everyone forgot about the weather! My lasting impression of the day was not the rain but rather the little ray of sunshine. The bride was so beautiful, young and happy; and her handsome groom so in love with his new bride.

It made me think of what kind of impression we leave on people when we enter a room because every day whether we realise it or not; we make impressions on others. 1 Timothy 4:12 reads, ‘Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity’. The way we live and treat others can leave a good impression or a bad one. What kind of an example are we in the lives that surround us?

M.R.W.L. Inc Plant of the Month Pararistolochia praevenosa (Aristolochia praevenosa) As this is the only plant the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly caterpillar eats, it is vital in helping save this threatened butterfly.

Along with the butterfly, the Birdwing Vine has also become extinct from two-thirds of its original distribution due mostly to habitat loss.

The Birdwing Vine has oblong shaped leaves, is dull green and rough to the touch, producing small yellow and reddish brown tubular flowers in Spring.

Slow growing, it grows best in semi-shade and moist soils, and benefits from a regular feed with a native plant food. Be aware that fresh wood chip mulch can burn the sensitive roots and new growth.

We encourage people to plant a number of plants in close proximity to each other so that the female Birdwing Butterfly can source enough food for the caterpillars.

Melicope 'Euodia' is commonly found along local streams but is suitable for the larger home garden, acreage, or for revegetation projects. Growing to about six metres, it has large glossy green leaves with three leaflets not unlike the North Queensland Umbrella tree.

Melicope has pale, soft corky bark which supports epiphytic species like native orchids and ferns.

Unit and townhouse activity grows

Queensland units and townhouses have followed the positive lead of the house market, according to the latest Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) data.

The REIQ’s December Queensland Market Monitor (QMM), released recently, showed the numbers of unit and townhouse sales across the State continued the property market’s upward trend compared to the year before.

The numbers of unit and townhouse sales increased 8.9 per cent in the December quarter 2012 compared to the same period in 2011.

REIQ CEO Anton Kardash said the driving force behind the improving sales volumes was the southeast corner.

“Compared to the December quarter in 2011, the numbers of sales in Brisbane and the Gold and Sunshine coasts continues to trend upwards, which of course partly reflects the concentration of, and demand for, these types of properties in South East Queensland,” he said.

“Also this quarter, there has been an increase in the numbers of affordable unit sales across the State, especially for properties priced between $250,000 and $350,000, as buyers take advantage of some attractively-priced properties.

“And Brisbane has posted its second quarter where the annual median price change has been in the positive, which is another sign that prices are heading in the right direction once more.”

According to the QMM, the numbers of sales in Brisbane was up 16 per cent compared to the December quarter in 2011; sales on the Gold Coast were up 8 per cent; and on the Sunshine Coast, the sales numbers increased an impressive 23 per cent over the same periods.

“The median price of units and townhouses on the Sunshine Coast also increased 1.1 per cent to $328,500 over the quarter with Noosa Heads and Noosaville also both recording price growth,” Mr Kardash said.

The Brisbane median unit price decreased 4 per cent to $389,000 over the quarter but posted an increase of 0.3 per cent over the year ending December.

Over the period there was also a marked rise in the numbers of sales between $250,000 and $350,000 which reduced the overall median price.

“Inner Brisbane suburbs continue to do well with median prices in New Farm and South Brisbane all posting solid price growth,” Mr Kardash said.

On Saturday, March 9 Hinterland Boxing Club sent a team to the Shamrock Boxing Gym’s tournament at the Sand’s Tavern in Maroochydore.

Three boys weighed in, however on Light Welter Weight, Taylen Pitt was the only boxer to be matched for a bout on the night. Taylen fought Shamrock Boxer Ryan Kelly with the bout going the full three rounds.

The first round saw Taylen start strongly landing some clean shots while pressing forward. The bout settled during the second round with both boys showing skills beyond their experience.

The third round saw Taylen using his rear hand, hook combination to great effect with Taylen winning the bout 12-6. Well done Taylen.

Hinterland Boxing Club will now be sending a team to Bundaberg on March 23 for a Flood Recovery Appeal Tournament before a tournament at Deception Bay on April 6.

Wednesday, March 6 - Ladies Bowls Day. Round 1 of the Ladies Championship A Singles was played.

PM game winners were Bray Howard and Trevor Bertram with 2 + 46. Runners up were Kerry Capern and Max Viterale with highest score in 1st game of + 24.

Saturday, March 9 - Super Challenge Competition.

Final round of Bronze Division 6/7. The Men and Ladies played Mooloolaba at Glass House. The men won five rinks to nil with overall score of 164 to 61. The men have won their Division, congratulations! They progress to the Round Robin Playoffs to be played at Glasshouse on Saturday, March 16. The ladies won one rink and lost one. The overall score was 42 to 27. The result for the ladies puts them as the winners of their Division also, so congratulations to them as well. They also will be playing in the Round Robin Playoffs. A great result for our small club. Opposition yet to be named.

Mooloolah Soccer Club Contributed by Sian Mountney

The club hosted one the 2013 U8 Soccer Carnivals along with some of the associations grading games on Saturday. These were the first official games of the season and we saw only a few showers of rain throughout the day. There were many happy faces and lots of laughter throughout the day.

A big thank you to all the wonderful volunteers – you made many of the Sunshine Coast kids very happy.

The Senior games kicked off on Friday night as well.

Unfortunately the Ladies game was cancelled.

With the beginning of March, the girls also started their eclectic and Monthly Medal competitions. We try to play these games regardless of the conditions and on Thursday, the course was so wet, we had to play the back nine twice as the front nine was just too heavy to play. Despite this, we had 25 players who came out to brave the conditions, when we played our first Monthly Medal for the year. The Thursday Medal is always sponsored by our Club Professional John Mellish.

John's shop at the club house caters for all your golfing needs so be sure to check it out. The winner of Division 1, with a score of 78 Nett, was our Captain Lea Garner.

Lea was followed by Cathy Stone who scored an 81 Nett. Best Gross in Division 1 went to Andrea Campbell who had 91 off the stick. Division 2 winner was Lea Doyle with a score of 86 Nett followed by Teresa Keast on 87 Nett. Best Gross in Division 2 went to Barb Drury with a 108 off the stick. Marjorie Pavitt took out Division 3 with a score of 86 Nett while Ruth Parish was runner up with a 94 Nett. Our own Joan Swyny took out Division 3 Gross with a score of 129 off the stick. NTPs went to Lea Garner on 16 (the first time round), and Sonia Kenway the second time. Andrea Campbell has the 18th worked out, taking that pin both times, along with the putting competition with 30 putts. The ball rundown went to 89 Nett. As I said, the course was very wet and I think all 25 girls deserve a medal just for playing Same goes for the Weekend Monthly medal held on Saturday. Even though the 18 holes were open, they were still very wet. Regardless of this, a field of 21 girls played a Stroke event for the Weekend Monthly Medal, which is sponsored by our great friends at Beerwah Newsagency. Winner of the Medal was Sonia Kenway with a Nett score of 77, pretty good considering the conditions. Sonia was followed by Kaye Jansen who scored a Nett 78. Best Gross score was submitted by Andrea Campbell who scored 92 off the stick. Sonia really had her radar tuned in, taking out the NTPs on 2 and 16, as well as the putting with 29 putts. Cathy Stone took out the NTP on the 18th. The ball rundown went to 84 Nett.

Goodness knows what the weather will bring next week, but until then stay safe and good golfing.

Lea Garner with Weekend Medal winner Sonia Kenway

Landsborough 13-year-old Tahlia Harrop has been selected, along with her horse Roseamba Romeo (Zam), as a member of the Pony Club Association of Queensland (PCAQ) Sporting Interstate Team. They’ll compete at the NSW Sporting Championships in Gloucester New South Wales in mid-April.

Tahlia, who has been riding since she was 4-years-old, is currently a member of Mooloolah Pony Club. She had been a member of Maleny Pony Club for the past four years.

She is passionate about her horses and riding in different disciplines like show jumping, and eventing, but her real love is sporting.

Earlier in April, Tahlia will be heading to Beaudesert to represent her club and Zone 6 for jumping equitation.

Her amazing horse Zam is a beautiful grey Egyptian Arab that she absolutely adores. He has taken her to the next level with his powerful, quick, graceful movements and he loves it just as much as she does.

Tahlia’s mum Helen says owning horses is about 80 per cent work and 20 per cent pleasure with cleaning, feeding and looking after their horses.

“There’s work to do in the morning before school, training etc after school, out at competitions most weekends with four horses, but Tahlia wouldn't have it any other way,” she said.

Sign on for the 2013 AFL Sunshine Coast Juniors season will be ongoing in March, at training on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 4.30pm until 6.00pm at Tunnel Ridge Road, Landsborough.

We have many willing parents spread out over the hinterland that are happy to help out with transport for training and games. So if the times are too hard with other commitments, we are able to help out.

The season will kick off on April 21 for the under 8s and 10s carnival and the first game for the Under 12s,14s,16s will be on April 14. Seniors start on April the 6.

This year you can become a non playing member for a one-off fee, this gets you discount on drinks and tickets in members raffles only, plus heaps more. So come on down and support your local AFL Club and meet the all new committee and have a kick on the oval.

Paddy is at it again

Paddy calls an airline to book a flight.

The operator asks "how many people are flying with you?" Paddy replies "I don't know! It's your bloomin’ plane!"

Paddy and Murphy are working on a building site.

Paddy says to Murphy "I'm gonna have the day off. I'm gonna pretend I'm mad!" He climbs up the rafters, hangs upside down and shouts "I'm a light bulb! I'm a light bulb!" Murphy watches in amazement! The Foreman shouts "Paddy you're mad, go home."

So he leaves the site. Murphy starts packing his kit up to leave as well. "where the hell are you going?" asks the Foreman. "I can't work in the

friggin' dark!" says Murphy.

Paddy and his wife are lying in bed and the neighbours' dog is barking like mad in the garden. Paddy says "to hell with this!" and storms off.

He comes back upstairs five minutes later and his wife asks "what did you do?"

Paddy replies "I've put the dog in our garden.
