his week we turn our attention to celebrating Senior’s Week which is on from August 15 – 23.

The ‘official week’ is an opportunity for Queenslanders of all ages to join together and celebrate the valuable contribution of older people.

To be honest it is not that different to most weeks, as we generally include plenty of stories featuring the more senior members of our community, who play such vital roles volunteering, and adding much to where we live.

Our front page features a very inspirational local couple who next week celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary, a milestone that isn’t celebrated too often.

Local News Celebrating 65th anniversary

Gordon and Heather Wright are a lively fun-loving couple in their 80’s that know a thing or two about married life - together they are about to celebrate their 65th Wedding Anniversary.

The couple who have resided at Glass House Mountains for the last 11 years, married in Adelaide on August 19, 1950 when Heather was 21 and Gordon was almost 23. They met through their families’ church choir when Heather was just 16 and Gordon was visiting his uncle, who also sang in the choir.

“When I saw Heather walk into that church I said to myself, I’m going to marry that girl,” said Gordon.

True to his word, once Heather turned 21 he did.

They were married in the same church where they originally met.

About 12 years ago, the couple who are keen travellers and motor homers, decided to build a granny flat next to their son’s property in Glass House Mountains. Currently they have 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

The couple have a shared love of singing and over the years have performed at various community events, musicals and church choirs.

When asked about a marriage tip for successful longevity Heather said, “just stick to it, and when you have a spat – just get over it!” Gordon added, “tomorrow is always another day.”

Heather said she always wanted to marry a man who was tall with nice wavy hair just like Gordon had, and when she first stood next to him, thought he had a really nice voice. She likes that he’s reliable and adds that “there’s something special about him – but I can’t say what!”

When asked about what he likes about his wife, Gordon replied, “she puts up with me and looks after me very well.”

With one final tip about what makes a successful marriage Gordon’s words of advice are quoted from the great Winston Churchill, “never, never, never give up!”

Be bushfire ready – Community Warnings

Contributed by Gavin Stewart, Volunteer Community Educator for Rural Fire Service – Caloundra Hinterland This week we are looking at bushfire community warnings.

Emergency services personnel issue bushfire warning messages (referred to as ‘community warnings’) through media and social media channels during significant bushfire incidents that may threaten life and property. It’s up to you to take notice, seek information, make decisions and act.

Community warnings are used to inform residents of threat to properties, time to impact, the direction and strength of the fire, and the steps residents must take to survive.

It’s essential for all Queenslanders to educate themselves and their families and understand the levels of warning to ensure you aren’t confused or panicked if a community warning is issued for your area this bushfire season.

There are four levels of community warnings which can be issued as an event escalates.

Advisory – there is a fire in your area, there is currently no threat to property; there is no action required.

Advice – there is a fire in your area, there is currently no threat to property, but stay informed and consider taking a series of preparatory actions.

Watch and Act – there is a fire in your area, you could be impacted and should prepare to enact your Bushfire Survival Plan.

Emergency Warning – there is a fire in your area, you need to enact your Bushfire Survival Plan immediately and prepare for impact.

If a Community Warning is issued in your area, you must tune into your local news broadcaster as emergency services personnel provide local radio with the most up-to-date information as it comes to hand.

Warnings are not only issued by the media or on social media platforms. Firefighters, State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers or police may doorknock in the area or you could receive an Emergency Alert message on your mobile or home phone with advice on the situation and where to go for further information.

Beerwah RSL Club doors permanently closed Last week the President of the Beerwah Peachester RSL Sub-branch, Gavin Smith confirmed that all options to keep the Beerwah RSL Club open have been exhausted, and sadly the next step would be for the club to go into receivership.

“While there had been hope that ‘State Branch’ would come to club's assistance to keep it running, this does not fall within their scope," he said.

The RSL State Branch focus is on the welfare of Returned Service Personnel and they do not get involved financially with clubs that have commercial gaming facilities.

"Beerwah RSL Club, like four or five of the other RSL Clubs, and many other clubs and hopitality business across the state, have been forced to close down in the last few years,” Gavin said.

Gavin explained that the Sub-branch members would now be given 14 days notice of a Special General Meeting that will be held for them to go through the process of appointing the liquidators.

“Once the liquidators have been engaged they will be given a 12 month period to sell the land and buildings which include the 'Club building' on Beerwah Parade and the ‘Drop in Centre’ in Free Street, which are all on the same property title,” he said.

“Once the property is sold, the Beerwah Peachester Sub-branch will still be a chartered sub-branch, however we won’t have a premises to operate out of.”

Finding a new premises and relocation of the Cenotaph will be two of their priorities to ensure

the Sub-branch will be able to continue the vital role they play in providing welfare services for both member and non-member returned services personnel.

Gavin is hoping that the Sunshine Coast Council will assist the Sub-branch in moving the Cenotaph which is central to all of the official events and services undertaken by the Sub-branch throughout the year.

This Saturday, August 15 is likely to be the last service held in the club’s current location, and the VP Day (Victory in the Pacific) service will be held at 10.00am.

It is now over four years since the Sub-branch made the decision to not continue their lease arrangement with the Community and Memorial Club.

At the time the decision divided the community, and created much anger from many of the area’s long-term residents and resulted in many in our

community predicting that the club’s permanent closure would be the ultimate long-term outcome.

Sadly, these views were proven correct and while those individuals may feel vindicated, there are still no winners from that decision made by the Sub-branch.

Both the Sub-branch members and the whole community have lost valuable community assets and there has been significant heartache along the way for many.

Queensland Road Safety Week 2015 One of the aims of QRSW2015 is to encourage greater individual and community ownership of road safety.

This is about everyone doing their part to ensure our roads are safe and helping to change what is acceptable behaviour on the roads.

The overwhelming majority of road users are safe and sensible drivers and riders, however many road users who fall into this category most of the time, still make some poor decisions.

A good example of this is a couple of recent incidents where accidents have been caused by drivers taking a chance at turning across traffic where they have not had clear sight lines.

While it may seem like life is too short to be stuck waiting to turn right onto, or cross over a busy road, the alternative could be life changing not just for you, but for other road users as well.

There are several side roads accessing Steve Irwin Way that are not controlled by traffic lights. On Steve Irwin Way the maximum speed limit is 80km/h, so vehicles are probably covering about 100 metres every five seconds.

If you can’t see at least 100 metres in each direction before you pull out of the side road then you have less than five seconds to make the turn.

Don’t become a statistic, take the time, it’s worth it.

The Ananda Marga River School in Maleny recently marked the beginning of its 21st birthday celebrations by hosting a full day of cultural activities to ‘honour our past, our land and our space.’

The celebrations will continue throughout the rest of the year culminating in a 21st Birthday Celebration and Reunion Dinner on November 28 for all past and present students, staff and their families.

The Cultural Activities day began with guests Lyndon Davis and Brent Miller, from the ‘Gubbi Gubbi Dance Troupe and Cultural Education Program’, presenting an inspiring Welcome to Country, didgeridoo playing and traditional fire lighting.

Students enjoyed participating in a variety of activities including Dreamtime story-telling, recycling paper to make pods encasing wishes, planting trees donated by Barung Landcare, Brush Turkey Enterprises and Lake Baroon Catchment Care Group, leaf mandala creations and palm frond painting.

There was also damper making, critter designs, serpent painting, seed mobiles, piccabean creations, boys business with Lyndon, traditional basket weaving with Bianca Bond and indigenous dance with Brent.

The day extended into a well attended School Café and performance evening where current families, students and staff honoured the founders of our school for their great vision and perseverance in creating the amazing learning space currently being enjoyed at the River School.

Suba Roo comes through Back in edition July 1, we farewelled Bruce and Kerry Allen from ATL Graphix in Beerwah as they ventured cross-country to participate in the Great Endeavour Rally.

Their trusty yellow Subaru rally car was transformed with a new blue look – Team Suba Roo (or Car 125), thanks to a range of generous sponsors and supporters.

The annual charity event raises money for the Endeavour Foundation to allow them to continue their vital support programs for people living with disabilities and their families.

With this being their fifth Endeavour rally, you would think that they would have experienced everything by now. But according to Bruce, this one was tough going.

“This was the hardest one so far … mentally and physically draining,” he said.

“It was big kilometres each day and hard conditions on the Suba Roo, but we all came through it in one piece, although just.

“But in the end, we raised around $11,500 for the Endeavour Foundation, which was the eighth highest amount raised overall. So that’s something to be proud of,” he said.

The funds were raised through the efforts of the Landsborough Masonic Lodge with the support of Freemasons Queensland and various Lodges around the state.

“But we couldn’t have raised that money if we didn’t have the car … and getting the car up and running was thanks to a number of local businesses,” said Bruce.

Introducing Kris Allen, your local Meat Manager Kris comes from a family with a strong history of retail service; and following in his siblings footsteps, he started his career at 15 years of age at IGA Mooloolah. After gaining store experience; at 17 he was offered a butchers apprenticeship at the IGA. Kris remained at IGA Mooloolah until 2009, when he then moved to the IGA at Evans Head in New South Wales. At 21 he became Meat Manager and remained at the store until 2013 – working his way up to assistant Store Manager.

On the recent school holidays Teghan from Teghans Dance Club (TDC) at Peachester jetted off to America for a month to undertake training at the International Dance Academy (IDA) in Hollywood.

Teghan danced beside professional dancers, and took intensives from some of Teghan with Mat Hollywoods t Steffanina best and most popular choreographers and teachers.

One of whom was Matt Steffanina. Teghan has followed Matt’s choreography and online tutorials for many years now and described the experience as “surreal” to be in a room with him, taking his classes with over 60 other students.

She studied a range of dance styles from Hip Hop and Contemporary to Reggae and Funk, completing up to 15 classes across six nights per week.

Teghan said the versatility in styles and techniques in the dancers and choreographers is something you won't find here in Australia.

“I’m so grateful to have had this opportunity and experience,” she said.

Acupuncture for alleviating pain

By Robert Coombs Choosing the right method to alleviate pain can be sometimes confusing and difficult.

Unfortunately for many of us, the methods we choose can be unsatisfactory, expensive, and be the cause of additional adverse effects.

Whether you are aware of it or not, most analgesic drugs in the health industry only focus on eliminating the sensation and perception of pain without taking into account what really is causing the pain.

Interestingly, there is now a multitude of modern scientific research that supports the effectiveness of acupuncture for the treatment of many types of painful disorders.

For instance, acupuncture has been shown to either alleviate the symptoms of, or clear the cause of the pain completely, from such conditions as headaches, lower back pain, sciatica, arthritis, period pain and gastrointestinal pain. There is even research that suggests that acupuncture not only assists with the recovery of all kinds of invasive surgeries but also with the assistance of cancer patients in remission.

This month Maleny libraries' window display features timber working tools, music and instruments that would have been used in the 1890s in Teutoburg, now known as Witta.

In the 1880s in 1890s pioneer settlers in Teutoburg felled trees to clear rainforest from the land and pit sawed timber into planks which they then worked with simple hand tools, to make fences, furniture and houses. Music, singing around the piano and playing the accordion and other instruments were familiar pastimes for the Teutoburg settlers, who came from various places in northern Europe into the new state of Queensland at the end of the 19th Century.

The sheet music was loaned to us by Olga Webster, whose father was Bernard Julius Nothling. Bernard’s father, Martin Julius, brought the Nothing family along with their piano, to Australia in 1879. The Nothlings selected land at Teutoburg in 1887. Thanks to Olga Webster and Maleny Historical Society for loaning the objects in the Wittafest display.

Gala vintage calendar launch

By Sonia Clark Mt Mellum’s Misty Bland is getting ready for the premiere gala launch of her 2016 Vintage Calendar Girls project - which will be the result of months of hard work, effort and tireless fundraising. The cheeky and tantalising calendar will be officially launched at a gala event on Saturday, September 19 at 7.00pm at the Beerwah and District Memorial Golf Club (24 Biondi Crescent, Beerwah).

The idea behind the vintage inspired calendar arose from Misty’s bid to raise awareness and money for her husband Rob’s rare form of cancer with proceeds going towards ‘Rare Cancers Australia’. The project has been wonderfully supported by the local community and businesses.

The 12 calendar girls will arrive in classic vintage vehicles dressed in their finest vintage gowns. The night will feature a silent auction of key vintage items from the photo shoots, and a vintage props lounge with the chance to have your photo taken in true vintage style at the photobooth.

Beverages will be available for purchase from the cash bar and there will be a sumptuous selection of hors d’oeurves created by top chefs.

Tickets are $25.00 single and $35.00 (includes copy of calendar), the calendar will be on sale on the night for $15.00.

In a call out to local businesses or generous individuals for support, Misty would sincerely like to seek an option to print out a canvas print of each of the months final shoots (probably costing around $500.00) to give as a ‘thank you’ to the ladies who volunteered their time to appear as ‘pinups’.

Music Festival is coming to town!

By Sonia Clark Now in its fourth year, The Maleny Music Festival is on again for three musically enticing days from Friday, August 28 through to Sunday, August 30 at the Maleny Showgrounds.

The relaxed and friendly feel-good festival will feature over 75 musically diverse acts including an eclectic mix of folk, funkiness, jazz, blues, world and alternative music.

Hayden Hack Infusion Also on the program is open mic sessions and local workshops held over Saturday and Sunday, with new skills to learn such as ‘finger style song arrangement’, ukulele, guitar techniques and even ‘Clawhammer Banjo’!

A number of local artists and home grown acts will be well represented over the three days including crowd pleasers, the five piece Sunshine Coast collective ‘Hayden Hack Infusion’. Hayden Hack and his ‘funk family’ will be bringing their unique brand of Afro and psychedelic aesthetic to the Bunya stage on the Friday night at 10.10pm.

Rob Longstaff will bring his combination of powerful vocals and groovy acoustic guitar to the Platypus Lounge on Saturday night at 9.20pm.

The socially and environmentally conscious Sunshine Coast soul, blues and pop musician creates energetic songs with a minimum of amplification.

Rob seeks to raise social and ecological awareness and his sets are always enthusiastically received.

Acclaimed multi instrumentalist Lee Hardisty will play the Bunya stage at 12.15pm on Sunday. Touring the world for the last 15 years, Lee brings an honest and heartfelt appreciation of what inspires him; with songs focussed around his wife and family, his garden and his community. He plays a number of instruments including saxophone, flute, guitar and kalimba to produce beautiful musical tapestries.

A number of other home grown local acts will be also be featured from Hinterland artists and groups such as the Beerwah High School Band (playing Friday Night on the Obi Obi stage at 7.00pm), Maleny Youth in Concert (Saturday morning 10.15am at the Platypus lounge) and the Maleny Ukulele Group (Saturday, 12.45pm on the Bunya Stage).

Area Co-ordinator Ron Stocks, Secretary/ Treasurer Maree Anderson, Committee Member Julianne Dickenson, Newsletter Editor Sheila Williams. The position of Deputy Area Co-ordinator is vacant.

At the ordinary meeting which followed, the August ‘Good Neighbour Award’ Greg and Lea with Ron Stocks certificate was presented by the Area Co-ordinator to Lea Parkes and Greg Brown from Glasshouse Country and Maleny News.

They were nominated by Sheila Williams, who wrote ‘not only do Lea and Greg work tirelessly to provide our area with a truly independent local paper, but they are very supportive of local organisations.’

It was very encouraging to see two police officers and a volunteer in policing at the meeting; it makes us feel that our work for NHWQ is valued.

Rotary Club of Glass House Mountains

Contributed by George McKenzie On August 17 our District Governor, John Leddy and his wife Barbara, will be visiting our club. This is always a great night, as we discuss what is happening around our different clubs. John has a busy schedule as he has to visit 67 clubs in his year.

At our meeting on August 3, our guest speaker was Robert Frizzo who spoke about pineapple farming. Robert’s grandfather settled in Beerwah in the 1930’s. We also had a visiting Rotarian Seb Messina who has settled in Beerwah. Seb has 22 years as a Rotarian starting at Cairns and Brisbane. Welcome to our district, Seb. From August 10 to 31 the Rotary photo competition entries for the 2016 Rotary Charity Calendar will be on display at Beerwah Library. On August 21, at 4.00pm, awards will be presented to the winning photos and calendar cover photo. There will also be light refreshments, everyone is welcome.

Local selected to attend specialised course in Japan By Sonia Clark In a lovely validation of her chosen profession and a once in a lifetime opportunity, local business owner of Soulqi Kaz Thomas-Roby, has been selected to attend a specialised Japanese Acupuncture training course in Osaka Japan later this year.

The opportunity to learn more about this ancient and specialised practice, under the guidance of three revered Japanese Masters, comes about only once every five years and only 30 people in the world are invited to attend.

To be considered to attend, an applicant must be nominated, and Kaz was fortunate to have her name put forward by her own ‘Sensei’ (master teacher) Emma who herself is an accomplished Japanese Acupuncturist practitioner.

“I am just so excited to have been selected. It‘s such an honour to be chosen to learn from the best of the best in my field,” said Kaz. The intensive week-long course will allow attendees to learn further skills in the practice of Japanese Acupuncture directly from the elderly masters.

It is a wonderful opportunity to gain knowledge of this ancient practice from those that were taught the skills from their own Sensei’s or who come from a long line of family practitioners.

The teaching course will further develop Kaz’s knowledge and she will learn more about needle skills, moxa (a herb that assists to tonify the body) and specialised body pressing skills (used instead of needles for children and for fertility treatments). The week will also see students attend an acupuncture museum and a high grade moxa factory.

There has been, over the last two or three months, publicity with regards to the raising of funds for charity by the Landsborough Masonic Lodge through their Sausage Sizzle at Beerwah Recycling. This is a small part of Freemasonry and much of what is involved remains a mystery. To clarify many of these mysteries Landsborough Masonic Lodge will hold an Open Night on Thursday, August 27 at 7.45pm in the Landsborough School of Arts. The evening is open to all those interested, and their partners.

It will take the form of an information session followed by questions and answers. The evening will close with a light supper and the usual Masonic Toasts will be observed. A test of strength at Charity Sports

For the second year running the strongman / strongwoman competition will be held at the Beerwah Charity Sports Day, Saturday, August 22.

This year the competition has been upgraded to become Round 3 (of 4) of the Queensland Strongman Series with a large number of competitors expected to enter the many exciting and exacting tests of strength.

Points won in this round go to building up total points for the eventual winner being declared Strongman and Strongwoman of Queensland 2015. So the competition will be fearsome! The competition will start at approximately 10.00am and will run for just on four hours so you will be able to see a lot of action. Come down to the Beerwah Sportsground and be amazed at the enormous weights these men and women can lift. Gates open at 8.30am with all funds raised going to the Cancer Council Queensland.

School News Beerwah students on camp

Contributed by Harrison (Year 5 student) Recently the Year 5 students from Beerwah State School attended a school camp at the Currimundi Recreation Centre. 5A1 students loved the camp!

We all had a great time with the experiences we had and the chance to get to know each other better. Some of the activities included high ropes, catapults, pool games (it was heated), circus skills, mini Olympics, and canoeing on Lake Currimundi, as well as free time. It was lots of fun.

When we made our catapults, they showed us how to tie different knots. Afterwards, we made our catapult, fired tennis balls and tried to catch them. I caught some of them and was hit plenty of times.

The food was great. We had our own eating area and everything was ready for us. Currimundi Recreation Centre was great and I hope the Year 4 students enjoy the experience next year.

Memorial gets a makeover

Contributed by Kylie Merola Landsborough State School's Anzac Memorial has received a makeover, thanks to local developer Darren Brown, who is currently creating Mellumbrook Drive Estate off Landsborough Maleny Road.

He has kindly donated sandstone to the school so that they could use it to give the school’s Anzac Memorial, that was originally built in 1999, a facelift.

Landsborough State School's Anzac Memorial Landsborough Principal, Kristy Walton, said the memorial helped keep the Anzac tradition and story alive. "It is a visible and tangible reminder of the past. It is also a part of daily school life as students pass it on their way to their classrooms and the playground," she said.

The recent restoration works include the new sandstone path, along with the surrounding garden being replanted with rosemary bushes and Australian natives.

The massive urban development plans for Halls Creek, adjacent to the Pumicestone passage, have been in limbo since the change of State Government last February.

The issue was a key issue in the local election outcome, which saw a substantial swing in the voting away from the Liberal-National Party, who the electorate saw as supporting the development of Halls Creek, with the resultant loss of the inter-urban break.

Protection of the inter-urban greenspace break has been identified by Sunshine Coast Council and local environment groups as vitally important to the future health of our natural environment.

The area comprises a 613sq km non-urban area located in the northern part of Moreton Bay region and southern part of the Sunshine Coast region, with about 52.5% being made up of National Parks, State Forests and Forest Reserves. About 36% is owned by the State Government and is leased for forestry purposes.

The State Government is progressing with the preliminary processes for the drafting of the next South East Queensland Regional Plan, which included the recent re-establishment of the Regional Planning Committee, a move welcomed by Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson.

“I commend the Deputy Premier for bringing the Committee together to advise on the next South East Queensland Regional Plan and I am absolutely delighted that regional inter-urban breaks is on the agenda,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“Preserving and protecting our own inter-urban break is absolutely crucial to maintaining our identity and protecting some of our most important natural assets.

“The current inter-urban break has been estimated as having a value of at least $5 billion to the regional economy.

“Protecting the inter-urban break from inappropriate development and ensuring it remains in place for current and future generations is one of the highest priorities for this council and reflects the long standing position of our communities,” Mayor Jamieson said.

Three absorbing days of field studies in the beautiful Sunshine Coast Hinterland, will take participants out of their lounge chairs and into the forests of the Blackall and Conondale ranges.

From their base at Booroobin, participants will commence with a wide view of the landscape from a vantage point overlooking the Glass House Mountains. Later they'll explore the diverse eucalypt forests and rainforests of this region.

Learning from experts in their field, participants will gain an understanding of the natural patterns in the landscape, the impact of disturbance, and build knowledge and skills to restore and connect our forests.

Over the last few weeks we have definitely had what could be described as some chilly winter nights. So you can imagine how relieved we were recently when the lovely staff at Cappriccios gave us a cosy table just near their fireplace!

Considering that the cold weather was keeping many locals snuggled up at home, we were not the only ones not deterred by the cold night – Cappriccios definitely have a dedicated bunch of locals who were dining in and loads of takeaways on the night.

It was a perfect night to tuck into a bowl of the rustic soup of the day, which was the hearty minestrone. It really hit the spot (although I have

Last week the Queensland Police Dog Squad calendar was officially launched.

It's an initiative from Sunshine Coast dog handler Senior Constable Dan Hayward and features beautiful photos of 39 police dogs from around the State.

Deputy Police Commissioner Barnett said he was proud to unveil the calendar with photos and biographies of sworn dogs, retired dogs, breeding dogs and puppies, and also contains a centrefold poster.

“The photographs of the calendar have beautifully captured the personalities of our general purpose, drug detection, explosive detection and human remains detection dogs,” he said.

The German Shepherds, Labradors and one Springer Spaniel were photographed in scenic locations from the south-east coasts to outback Mount Isa and in operational situations such as travelling on a Water Police RHIB and searching a car’s engine for explosives.

Police Dog Angel, the only female general purpose dog, was photographed in front of Brisbane’s beloved Story Bridge which Brisbane City Council lit up pink for us to raise awareness for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

“We hope the calendar raises valuable funds for animal rescue and breast cancer research and to assist police officers and their families who are in times of need or those families who have been affected by the death of a Queensland police officer.

All funds from the calendars will go to the Animal Welfare League of Queensland, Police Legacy and the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Handlers and dogs will be selling the calendars each day at the Queensland Police Stand stand at the Ekka.

The calendars are also available for purchase online at the Police Health and Recreation Association shop: www.qphra.com. They are $20.00 each and online sales will incur freight costs.

August is Pet Dental Month Business feature The Landsborough and Glass House Vet Surgery will be offering free dental checks throughout August as part of Pet Dental Month to raise awareness of pet dental problems, prevention and treatment, particularly in older pets.

According to Tom Duggan at Landsborough and Glass House Vet Surgery, four out of five dogs and cats over the age of three years have some sort of dental disease which may go unnoticed by their owners.

“Pets often won’t show pain. Even pets with sore gums, infected mouths and broken teeth will continue to eat so owners may not see any problems,” he said.

So how can you tell if your dog or cat has a toothache?

“Your pet’s breath should not smell bad. Bad breath is a sign of infection.

Gums may be red and inflamed and the teeth stained with tartar or they may start dropping food.

“Annual dental health checks are an ideal opportunity for owners to find out if their pet has existing problems which have gone unnoticed. Dental health checks also help ensure bacteria and poisons from dental infections do not spread to the heart, liver and kidneys through the blood stream.

“We also recommend regular tooth brushing and many cats and dogs can be trained to enjoy having their teeth brushed, especially if you start at an early age.”

During the month of August the clinic will be offering free dental assessments, dental prevention information and dietary advice.

Senior Moments It’s on for young and old In celebration of Seniors Week, Live Life Village, Maleny Grove will host a fun-filled day reminiscing the ‘old days’. Residents and the local community are invited to bring along a photo that is meaningful and to share your personal story. All photos will be displayed in the community centre at Maleny Grove in a special display.

Village Manager, Kaye Smyth said, they plan to bring the community together to celebrate their stories.

Do you remember Lucky Starr?

Lucky Starr is one of the founding members of the Australian Pop Music Industry and he will be taking to The Events Centre’s stage on Wednesday, August 19 at 11.00am.

He was a regular on television shows such as Bandstand and also hosted Six O’clock Rock for one season.

Lucky Starr also made regular appearances on Mavis Bramston, Revue 60 – 61, in Melbourne Tonight, Sing Sing Sing, plus many other entertainment shows.

In 1962 Lucky recorded a hit record ‘I’ve Been Everywhere’, which to date still remains one of Australia’s all-time favourites.

The record received the highest accolade in the music industry, the Platinum Award.

Glasshouse Mountains Probus What is Probus? We're an association of retired and semi - retired folk who meet monthly with the idea to keep our minds active, share our interests and enjoy the company of new friends.

Our main goals are fun, friendship and fellowship.

Our club is simple in structure and free from the constraints of a service club so we're not a fundraising body, rather we're self-funded with no obligation to any outside activity or association.

We manage the Club's business with a 10 person Management Committee who meets on the first Wednesday of the month.

This optimises our time for the regular second Wednesday meeting of the general membership.

This general meeting involves a half hour element to update the members, then a half hour smoko break followed by a guest speaker, and we've been fortunate to have informative and entertaining guests.

We're done by 12.00noon and then it's lunch we prefer a venue where we can BYO to share and the Beerwah Hall - ideal for camaraderie - is just right.

Our fourth Wednesday is billed as our outing for the month. This may be to organisations, or activities or places of current interest to members including one or other of our back yards for a barbecue.

In between, we do have a delightful monthly musical morning, a Book Club and an afternoon Mahjong group every fortnight.

We also have occasional functions such as our ‘Xmas in August’ luncheon, at Landsborough this time, and routine monthly ‘Upcoming Entertainment Events’ for our enjoyment.

Dental Excel (previously known as Marley Dental) has been providing health care services to Beerwah, the hinterland and the Sunshine Coast for going on 19 years.

Principal Dentist Dr David Marley says it is very important that the elderly have sound functioning dentition for the sake of their general health.

“Poor oral health and periodontal (gum) condition is a contributory factor in heart and vascular disease such as stroke, and a healthy mouth is very important in such conditions as diabetes,” Dr Marley stressed.

Maintaining oral health is not just about keeping teeth – although this is important.

“Dentures can be a dreaded reality and a real trial for many people,” he said.

“Although they provide a much reduced functional efficiency compared to natural teeth, ultimately both the enjoyment of food and good digestion are extremely important for a healthy life and an important sense of well-being, meaning dentures do become vitally important as we age.”

Masticatory function can deteriorate without one realising as dentures and the jawbone wear and, as a rough guide, full dentures should be relined every two years and replaced every five to seven years as the gums shrink and the mouth changes.

Dr Marley said many people after years struggling with a full lower denture, and forgetting what it is like to really bite and enjoy food, are now electing to have ‘implant retained’ dentures.

“This is where the lower denture is clipped down on two implants to provide a solid unmoving opponent for the upper denture to work against.

“One step further than this is ‘implant retained fixed’ dentures, more commonly called ‘All-on-4’, again available where appropriate from Dental Excel.

“This form of denture is becoming increasingly popular due to the benefits that they bring,” Dr Marley said.

New CEO for Maleny Credit Union Earlier this month, Maleny Credit Union welcomed Bob Malcolm as their new CEO. Bob brings with him over 35 years experience in the finance industry, 25 of which have been with the Credit Union movement.

Married with two children, two step-children, and a new granddaughter, Bob has been impressed with the warm welcome he has received from the Maleny Credit Union family.

Bob is very involved in the community and currently serves on the board of Aid for the Blind (Qld) and is also President of Northern Suburbs Hockey Club Inc. His vision for the future of Maleny Credit Union is also very much a community focused one, both within the geographical Maleny community and the wider ethical and sustainability community.

Bob is passionate about reengaging the younger locals. He said his aim is to rearticulate the values that made their parents and grandparents open Maleny Credit Union in the first place.

As well as evolving the current community programs, Bob is keen to re-engage the local community with the relaunch soon of the Community Soapbox forum.

He is looking forward to meeting everyone as he gets out and about in the next few weeks, or feel free to drop in, his door is always open.

Auscare trainee is a legend

By Lea Parkes Glasshouse Christian College Year 12 student Vanita Mens, who is currently completing a school based traineeship at AusCare Pharmacy at Glass House Mountains, was recently presented with an award for Trainee of the Quarter from Acclaim Apprentices and Employees. The award acknowledges her professionalism, work ethic and skill set.

Back in 2013 as a Year 10 student, Vanita completed work experience at the pharmacy, she obviously impressed them all, as they offered her a two year school based traineeship.

So along with completing her Year 12 studies, Vanita works about 14 hours per week and completes her Certificate 2 in Community Pharmacy through the Pharmacy Guild.

Vanita works a full day on Wednesday and the other hours she does outside of school hours. She is saving her wages so she can buy a car.

There was consensus among the staff that Vanita should be very proud of her award, business owner Martin Vigar definitely agrees, saying she is a legend.

The Chamber has held several successful network meetings in the past two months, but it would be great to see more members attend these meetings, to take advantage of the opportunities available.

And speaking of opportunities, the Annual General Meeting is coming up on Wednesday, September 2 at the Beerwah Hideaway, 6.00pm for a 6.30pm start (buffet dinner will be available). Please RSVP to the Hideway if you would like a meal phone 5494 6270. The AGM provides an ideal opportunity for any member to become a more active participant in providing input and direction on how the Chamber gets things done.

Your Chamber of Commerce is a valuable tool and resource but it is only as good as the people who are actively involved in making it work.

I have had information that there are some members who are not happy with the Chamber. If anyone has a genuine grievance then I am more than happy to discuss this with them personally. I can be contacted on 5494 9718. However before anyone rings, please have a think about what outcome you are seeking, a possible solution to your issue, and an idea of how you are going to be involved in being part of the solution.

Recently there have been notices in the media advising that a fresh round of Community Grants are available. Your Chamber would embrace the opportunity to apply for some of these grants, and make things happen, however these things do not happen by themselves. The current Chamber executive, who are all volunteers and should be thanked for their time and input, are stretched to the limit. And while it is easy to sit back and criticise, whether it be in a positive or negative way, it is always much more gratifying to become active and be part of the solution.

So, I invite all members to lodge a nomination for any of the required positions on the executive which will all become vacant at the AGM. Alternatively if there is an issue that any of our members are passionate about and it is within the scope of the Chamber to act upon, please bring it to our attention, but also be prepared to participate in making things happen.

The more members we have actively involved in your Chamber of Commerce the less work we all have to do to achieve the same things.

The reality with our complex and fast changing legal system is that there is an overlap between many different areas of law which all solicitors need to take into account when providing advice and assistance to clients.

Another example of the inter-lap of different areas of the law occurs quite frequently in property law.

It is quite common for clients to instruct solicitors to transfer a property from two persons (who were in a relationship but have separated) to one of those persons.

Stamp duty, a Queensland government tax, is payable in this situation. As many of you would be aware, stamp duty is a transaction tax based on the value of the property and is usually very costly.

We would advise the clients not to take this course of action but rather to enter into a binding financial agreement or consent orders which would not only transfer that property with no stamp duty payable whatsoever but would also have the effect of protecting the parties’ other assets, including superannuation, from any future claim from the other party.

It is only through a complete overview of your life, personal circumstances, business circumstances, and involvement with your legal affairs over many years that a comprehensive and complete legal service can be provided, with no conflict between different legal processes or documentation.

Specialist advice of course may be needed from time to time to ‘fine tune’ your legal affairs or deal with a particular issue which has arisen.

Out & About Drinks on the Deck with the cast of Figaro A near capacity crowd enjoyed the fun and frolics of Lindy Hume’s adaptation of Rossini’s ‘The Barber of Seville’ for Opera Queensland, performed at the Maleny Community Centre recently.

Many of the audience gathered on the deck at the Centre with the cast after the show to discuss the comic opera with a drink in hand.

This production was the first time Opera Q had come to the Hinterland. This was done under the auspices of the Maleny Arts Council (MAC).

Given the great reception they received, it is sure not to be the last.

37th Annual Caloundra Stamp Fair It is estimated that there will be around 500,000 stamps (mint and used), plus accessories available for purchase (browsers welcome) at the Caloundra Stamp Fair. The event will be hosted by the Caloundra Stamp Club, and held at the Beerwah and District Community Hall, 25 Peachester Road, Beerwah, on Sunday, August 23. The fair will open from 8.30am to 3.30pm and members of the public are most welcome to attend. Entry is free, there is plenty of off-street parking available, and the hall is wheel-chair accessible. There will be five stamp dealers (buying and selling) attending with a wide range of stock. There will also be up to 18 stamp clubs with stamps, covers etc. for sale. Other attractions will be a ‘Bargain Table’, and an auction at 1.30pm of philatelic items offered by club members or the public. Auction lots must be submitted by 10.30am and there is a limit of 200 lots auctioned. A raffle with multiple prizes and hourly ‘lucky door prizes’ will feature, and refreshments will be available at moderate prices.

Musical benefit for Nepal Support the victims of the disastrous earthquakes in Nepal by heading along to the Benefit Concert hosted by the Buderim Male Choir including items by the Buderim Concert Band and soloist Ms Fiona Simpson MP on Sunday, August 16. Local identity and now Brisbane resident, Graham Schulz, will return to the Sunshine Coast to compere the concert to be held at the Lake Kawana Community Centre from 2.00pm. All funds raised will support the work already undertaken in Nepal by Dr Sinnya, a Nepalese born surgeon currently working at the Buderim Private Hospital. Dr Sinnya grew up in Patan near Kathmandu, and says it is heartbreaking to see the devastation and distress, knowing how little the people of Nepal have and the difficulties they are now facing. Admission to the concert is $15.00 and children free.

Remarkable authors coming to Outspoken Outspoken, in partnership with the Brisbane Writers Festival, presents two remarkable events in September. Conversations with Kate Grenville on Wednesday, September 2 and Tim Flannery on Tuesday, September 8.

Kate Grenville is one of Australia’s most popular and best-known writers.

She will be discussing her new book: ‘One Life: My Mother’s Story’, a deeply moving homage to her mother, by one of Australia’s finest writers. She will be joined by author Olivera Simic.

Professor Tim Flannery is one of Australia’s leading writers on climate change. An internationally acclaimed scientist, explorer and conservationist, he was named Australian of the Year in 2007 and has held various academic positions. Professor Flannery will be talking about his new book ‘The Atmosphere of Hope’, and will be joined by author and columnist Kate Holden.

Beautification of entry to Beerwah

Council has spent a lot of money on Simpson Street, but there is nothing north or south bound along Steve Irwin Way to encourage tourists to think (Hey) this looks like a beautiful town let's turn off and have look.

All you see is long grass, weeds, and dead trees, except for the few private homes that keep the footpath mowed and tidy.

Council should consider undertaking work to beautify the dead trees, long grass and swamp at the corner of Mawhinney Street and Steve Irwin Way at Beerwah.

You drive past many towns like Beerwah and you see how neat and tidy their approaches are, which invites you to call into the business centre, and have a look.

Improvements to Mawhinney Street would also assist the rainwater drainage from Beerwah Parade and also Swan Street as there have been a large number of units built in the area and the drainage has not been adjusted to assist with the increase of volume of rainwater runoff.

Wrong NBN site?

If the proposed site for the Peachester NBN tower involves the permanent closure of part of the Old Peachester Road reserve, then this is a mistake. Old Peachester Road is a road reserve up the range to Peachester, although the formed road ends near the foot of the range. Pedestrians and cyclists using (new) Peachester Road up the range do so at considerable risk and horse-riders dare not use it at all.

If from the end of the formed road in Old Peachester Road a National Parks-style gravel footpath was extended up the road reserve to Peachester this would provide an alternate and safe route up the range to Peachester for walkers, joggers, cyclists and horse-riders. In the medium-term future this could have considerable economic benefits to our region. Overseas the townships on or near long distance footpaths (e.g the West Highland Way in Scotland) and bridle trails benefit from more tourist custom than they had anticipated. The same goes for country cycle paths. There are other higher-priority roadworks in the short-term (e.g a safe footpath and cycle-way between Glass House Mountains and Beerwah) but we should not be locking permanently doors which we later wished we had left unlocked with the potential of being opened at a later date.

Welcome to new business

We wish to welcome the owners of the little café and massage/beauty therapy home business on the corner of Poole Road and Coonowrin Road, at Glass House Mountains.

What a wonderful new addition to our area and we were so pleased to hear the idea behind this transformation of the old home that once was.

The idea was inspired by friends suffering cancer, immunosuppressant people who don’t have options to go out and meet a friend for a coffee, or have a makeover, because any little bug or germ can kill; or someone who may be feeling particularly self-conscious after a treatment.

It is great to see a local family trying to make a difference in some very deserving people’s lives.

Sadly a complaint has been made to council regarding the parking at this property; it is understandable at your frustration as there are bound to be teething problems.

However it is a shame in a community like ours that the person making the complaint felt unable to contact the owner directly to chat about your concerns.

Have we become too much like the city, unwilling to talk to a neighbour about a problem, eager instead to involve those who govern over us all?

NBN challenge moves to Council

In April 2014, the Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) adopted their new Planning Scheme which commenced operation from May 2014.

This contains many requirements including the Scenic Amenity Code and the Telecommunications Facility Code.

Both of these Codes reflect the council’s attitude towards the standards expected of telecommunications companies installing equipment in the SCC area. The Codes and other planning requirements reflect community expectations for the visual amenity of this area and for the long-term health and wellbeing of flora, fauna and humans.

The Objection Period for Development Applications (DAs) relating to towers and microwave equipment proposed for Razorback Road, Hunchy and Eagle’s Nest Court, and Bald Knob has closed. Both of these DAs breach the Performance Objectives within the Codes for this type of development.

It is now up to council to consider these DAs against those Performance Objectives contained in the new Planning Scheme.

Questions about the integrity of this process have been fuelled because council, as the property owner, allowed NBN to include an additional proposal located in the SCC depot in Palm Street, Maleny, at a Community Information Forum.

This Palm Street proposal certainly fails in many aspects against the Codes including that it is near the hospital, a retirement village and many residences within the 400 metre zone.

The Community now calls on council to do their duty to local residents by assessing these DAs in a manner which demonstrates adherence to the standards contained within the Planning Scheme.

This would require rejection of the DAs. Towerless NBN for Maleny and Hinterlands please.

A big thanks must go to the Maleny Show Society and Col Sinclair for another very successful Muscle on the Mountain Show and Shine Day in early July. Now in its fifth year the event continues to grow each year. The day attracted 705 entries (up almost 100 on last year) with around 5,000 patrons through the gates for just a gold coin. The event raised around $15,000 (with pledges still coming in) for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and funding research. Thanks on behalf of all blokes for a great effort.

The latest round of recipients from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund grants were also recently announced and I was able to visit quite a few groups who were successful in this round. Well done to the Peachester P & C for receiving a grant for air-conditioning and also the Peachester Playgroup who now have funds to upgrade their shed. The kids at Woodford Kindy also recently received funding for an upgrade to their playground and the Eudlo Rural Fire Bridge will be upgrading their building and purchasing furnishings. It is great to be able to catch up with these groups personally so I can join in their celebrations. They constantly tell me that injections of funds like this go such a long way to helping them survive and provide an even better service to the community.

After much deliberation with the community and council staff regarding the proposed community information sign in Martin Rungert Park, the project has been canned. Whilst the proposed sign reflected an aesthetic appeal and was to be a new innovative type structure, the proposed sign did not meet with safety standards in that location, taking into consideration the vicinity of the pedestrian crossing etc.

It’s onto the next projects:

• Mooloolah Rec. Park – works will commence soon on improving the entrance. This will include a walking path connecting to town, culverts across the water course, also providing for pedestrian traffic towards our new picnic shelter. New signage will also be erected to the entrance of the park.

• Proposed skate facility – progressing after the tabling of the petition, a letter has been forwarded to the office of Jackie Trad seeking a peppercorn lease of land adjacent to the Mooloolah train station (eastern side).

The monthly meeting is on the first Thursday of each month at 7.00am for a 7.30am start.

Walk of Peace

It's been a busy time in the community too lately.

I attended the 20 year celebrations for Art on Cairncross and the official presentation for the Muscle on the Mountain, both in Maleny. I joined the crew from Delaneys Creek Rural Fire Brigade to celebrate their 50 year anniversary and once school resumed for Term 3, got to personally present a new flag to the Mt Mee State School.

I also dropped in on the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce monthly dinner meeting it's great to see these guys come together regularly to discuss the future of small business and how they can work collaboratively to improve the local economy. The Maleny CWA held their AGM last month complete with Midlands' Ploughman's Lunch - yum! I also joined Cr McKay and Mayor Jamieson to officially open the new Maleny Trail which will be a great asset to our local community.

It was with much excitement that we officially launched the Maleny Trail recently, incorporating the Riverside Boardwalk and Reynolds Circuit Boardwalk, which allows walkers better access to enjoy the rolling hills of the Hinterland town, Obi Obi Creek and the township itself.

A spectacular addition to the trail, the ‘Peace in the Trees’ sculptures at the Cloud Walk end is progressing well and should be ready for viewing in September. The ‘Peace in the Trees’ walk has been created to encourage us to think a little more about peace and our natural environment.

The walk is a result of the inspiration and support of internationally renowned local sculptor Craig Medson. Craig supported the community and fellow artists by arranging the delivery of 12 tonnes of Helidon sandstone, personally breaking it into workable monoliths and inspiring and teaching artists to sculpt stone.

I’m very much looking forward to this wonderful project come to fruition soon.

Raffle winner Gwyneth Clarke went home happy

Well, it was certainly a cold day in July for our Friendship day, but a warm welcome was extended to the many visitors from neighbouring garden clubs and members.

The first guest speaker introduced was John Innes whose topic was bees. There are a number of varieties of native bees to be found, but many native bees are solitary bees and only a few gather honey.

John also explained and demonstrated how a European honey bee hive is constructed. He also spoke a little about moving his bee hives from place to place to take advantage of whatever trees were in flower at different times of the year.

Our second guest speaker was Greg Brown or Brownie as he is known from our local paper. He spoke a little about his early years of gardening experiences, then showed us a selection of common garden plants, particularly those found in older gardens, and a few common weeds.

Some of the common garden plants are poisonous to people and some can affect pets as well. Unfortunately many of these common garden plants can, and have become, environmental weeds, so as gardeners, we should be aware of this possibility.

Then Julie Lumsdale ambassador of the QLD Council of Garden Clubs, and Glenis Bruin, representative of the garden clubs of Australia, were invited to say a few words.

There were a large number of raffle prizes drawn and Gwyneth Clarke from the Aspley Garden Club was the lucky winner of the major prize of a large pot filled with goodies.

Results of the competition bench for June: 1st Coral Beutel 20 points, 2nd Pam Innes 18 Points.

We will meet in the garden of Nessie Pratten on Thursday, August 20 for our next meeting at 9.30am. Please bring along lunch, chair and mug. Visitors are always welcome.

Native Sarsaparilla - Hardenbergia violacea Spring is almost here and one of our local wildflowers is already starting her beautiful display. Normally seen as a sprawling shrub or groundcover, Native Sarsaparilla puts on a gorgeous display of deep purple flowers throughout Spring into Summer. Two popular cultivars in ‘Happy Wanderer’ and ‘Mini Ha Ha’ also offer great growing variations and prolonged flowering periods.

They look great in a mixed native bed. This is a very tough plant for most soil types and can take full sun or semi shade. It can be grown in a pot where it cascades down or up a fence or arbour.

Usually found on the fringes of Eucalypt forests, the Native Sarsaparilla can be found locally around Ewen Maddock Dam in flower now.

Hilldene, Reesville Continuing on with my look at some of the open gardens from the recent Gardening on the Edge event (organised by the Maleny Garden Club). This week’s Backyard Stickbeak is of ‘Hilldene’ at Reesville, just outside Maleny.

The property, owned and cared for by Jim and Kim Straker, has been a labour of love since they took over its stewardship in 2004.

Camell “What you inherited in the way of a garden, Vari ia 'Mark Alan egated' via three previous owners, was not quite what you see today,” said Kim. “By the time we came here there were mature eucalypts, 30 really awful Fiddlewood trees, the Bribie and Norfolk Island Pines, many small rock feature gardens and about two-thirds of an acre of lawn.”

Jim and Kim spent five years (2006 to 2011) living overseas.

“We could only manage a couple of weeks back here each year, during which time we planted a few more trees, mowed that wretched lawn and wondered if what we had in mind for the garden would ever come to fruition,” explained Kim.

But in 2011, they moved back permanently and decided to change the landscaping to be minimal maintenance, low water dependent and wildlife friendly.

Six years later, the results are plain to see.

Wildlife abounds, the soil is full of worms and fungi and fruit trees flourish.

According to Kim, the key is mulch the soil often and well, go easy on the soil so as not to compact it, don’t use sprays or poisons, and select appropriate species.

“Although the garden may appear labour intensive, it’s actually quite the reverse.

Although the block is only one acre, it genuinely appears to be larger, which is due to the layout of the meandering paths and the hidden ‘rooms’ and vistas.

One aspect of the garden that is Jim’s passion is his native bee ‘condominium’ – a collection of logs and timber with hollows in them for native bees to nest. Native bees are struggling, even in non-urban environments, so any help we can give them is most welcome.

Not only has the wildlife – such as koalas, echidnas, 29 species of birds, lizards, butterflies and bees – been catered for, but their grandkids have a fantastic cubby house made from a converted caravan.

The garden also features an array of colourful exotics set amongst the natives, proving that the two genres can be successfully mixed.

One beautiful example is the Camellia japonica ‘Mark Alan Variegated’ at the front gate – definitely one to hunt down and plant in anyone’s garden.

Sport Maleny Redbacks Cricket Club sign on With footy finals fast approaching and the days getting warmer, it’s now time for the locals to drag out the old bat and ball and join the local cricket team. The Maleny Redbacks Cricket Club will be holding their 2015/16 Season Sign On this Sunday, August 16 from 10.00am to 12.00noon at the Maleny Showgrounds.

The Maleny Redbacks are searching for boys and girls to fill their Under 10, 12, 14 and 16 teams and men of all ages and ability to be part of the senior sides. All sides play in the Sunshine Coast Cricket Competition.

The Under 10 team will play on a Friday night from 6.00pm to 8.00pm, in a fun-filled modified game using a softer ball with the aim of the game being that everyone gets a go. It is a great way for kids as young as five to get a start in cricket.

The Under 12, 14 and 16 teams play on Saturday mornings from 7.45am to 12.00noon playing One Day and Two Day games, using a proper cricket ball, where all players receive a bat and a bowl. Junior registration is very affordable, with each player receiving a playing and club shirt and hat as well. The Senior side plays on a Saturday afternoon, from 12.30pm to 5.30pm. The season is made up of seven two day games and seven one-dayers. The team consists of players ranging from teenagers through to a couple of experienced lads in their 50’s and 60’s.

Anyone interested in playing for the whole season or filling in for a few games is welcome to join up.

The competition was a Monthly Medal Stroke and the 6th Round of the GQ Brooch. The worthy winners were as follows: Division 1 Cathy Stone with 74 nett, Runner-up was Lea Garner with 77 nett and Gross Winner, Cindy Godfrey with 89 off the stick. Division 2 was Carol Cork with 69 nett, Runner-up Sharon Phillips with 71 nett and Gross Winner was Jennifer Kelly with 92 off the stick. Division 3 was Heather Coyle with 75 nett, Runner-up Bridget John with 77 nett.

NTP’s were won by: Jennifer Kelly No 2, Hope Hannah No 5, Leslie Eggleston No 16, and Bridget John No 18. The Ball Rundown went to 78 nett. Next week’s competition on Thursday, August 13 is our Captain versus President Day in an 18 hold Stroke team challenge sponsored by Lea Garner and Monica Dangerfield. Spectacular Sports Day

Mooloolah State School recently held their annual sports carnival at the school. It was a cloudy morning and we hoped the rain would stay away, but we were blessed with awesome weather for the whole day. The Sport houses, Rungert, Maddock and Westawaycame out strong and were hungry to win points. All students participated in the march past which was a wonderful display of team colours and pride. They sang their ‘War Cries’ with passion and impressed the staff, families and visitors with their efforts and team spirit.

All students participated in running races and received ribbons for their efforts, while the older children performed in other events including relays, long jump, high jump and shot put.Many winners on the day broke school records for time or distance. Mooloolah State School staff would like to thank the parents and volunteers that helped on the day either timekeeping or in the tuckshop. They would also like to give a huge thank you to the Mooloolah Lions Club for volunteering their time and cooking thebarbecue and helping make the day a huge success.

Maddock came in first place followed by Rungert and then Westaway. Many of our students are now off to the District Athletics Carnival.

Cricket Sign On

The Landsborough Loggers Cricket Club is on the scout for new members, both senior and junior, to play all levels of cricket. Plenty of action promised in this 2015/16 season so come join this great group of people and enjoy all things cricket and social! Remember, social memberships are also available to take advantage of the club’s top facilities. The Wednesday fixtures commenced the Autumn season on July 15. The Lunachicks team from Landsborough Tennis Club won their first match for the season against Witta Wagtails, on July 22.

The home match was cancelled due to rain.

The team lost their next match on July 29 against the Caloundra team Buddies at Caloundra however at the home game on August 5 they had a win against Kawana Zodiacs. Social Tennis is available as follows: Ladies Tennis Tuesday at 8.30am to 12.00noon and Wednesday evening at 7.00pm and Sunday at 1.30pm.

San players have a tough time in Korea Contributed by Norm Taylor

A small team from San Training Centre recently travelled to South Korea.

Cameron Taylor with his partner Kasia Bartnikowska, as well as coach, father Norm Taylor, and team manager/mother Kate Taylor, spent three weeks training and sightseeing in the home of taekwondo, South Korea. A highlight of the trip was competing in the Korean Open - one the world’s biggest taekwondo competitions, held over six days with a total of almost 3000 entrants from about 100 countries this year.

Cameron competed in the lightweight division against 58 other competitors from 19 countries.

Unfortunately he lost his first match 12 points to one, against a tough competitor, Said Guliyev from the small country of Azerbaijan who last year won the Gold medal at the Youth Olympic Games.

Cameron said although losing is disappointing, he learned so much from fighting at the top level.

"These competitors are the best in the world.

Competing against a champion like Said is a great experience,” he said.

Cameron moves up to number 190 in the world after the competition.

The chance to train in Korea is also a memorable experience. After the competition Cameron and Kasia went for two weeks of training at Chillgok Middle school in the city of Dague.

Korean style training is very hard, especially in schools, as students wishing to study taekwondo at University need to win a high level competition to gain entrance.Training started at 3.00pm and went to 7.00pm each day and had many intense pad drills and around an hour of sparring each class. Training was made even harder by the 40 degree days.

Now back training in Beerwah, Cameron and Norm are getting the team ready for the National Titles in Adelaide in October. Cameron Taylor and Aaron Lerch will both be looking to defend their National Champion titles.
