Hi Everyone...

For weeks I have been driving the road between our office in Glass House Mountains and Maleny keeping an eye on all the work happening at The Big Barrel, which is now called The Barrel.

So I have to say I was pretty excited to get the chance last week to have a look inside and see what has been happening.

Well, wow was pretty much the first word to come out of my mouth when I went inside. It looks fantastic.

I have always loved the shape of the barrel from the inside but they have really transformed how it looks and feels.

In this week’s edition we have included a story on page 5 about what is happening there these days, as well as a whole lot of other stories about interesting things that have been happening in our community.

On page 9 we also pay tribute to one of Maleny’s long serving volunteers, Tom Malone, who turns 90 this week. He is still volunteering his time to help out the rest of the community. Thanks Tom and hope you enjoy a little bit of relaxation and celebration on your special day.

A true crime author event with revered Australian author and journalist Matthew Condon is coming to the Beerwah Community Hall on Thursday, September 19, from 6pm. Matthew’s awardwinning series including ‘Three Crooked Kings’ about Queensland crime and corruption is considered the master work of true crime.

Hear Matthew in conversation about his latest work ‘The Night Dragon’ and live music by Lee Hardisty, with drinks on the deck and light refreshments.

There will be a cash wine bar from 6–7pm.

Local News Local toymaker launches global business Maleny mother of five, Angel Goulter, has long enjoyed the creative art of toy making and last month took a big step forward in turning her passion of toy making into a full-time career.

Along with studying midwifery, working part-time and raising her young family, Angel is currently running a project through Kickstarter, a global forprofit benefit corporation that helps bring creative projects to life by providing the opportunity for people to pledge their support. Angel’s aim is to make her original line of magical cuddly soft toys, the FuzzlePuffs, readily available to the public.

Angel has been creating the imaginative line of toys for more than a year after her daughter requested a special toy to help her be brave on bus trips. That was the beginning of FuzzlePuffs and Angel has received a tonne of support in creating little creatures for many to enjoy.

“I’ve had a lot of custom orders for birthdays and gifts, and it’s been really encouraging seeing how popular they are becoming,” she said.

“When hand-made, the process involved in making a FuzzlePuff requires many hours of work, which can make them difficult for most people to afford.

“We wanted to ensure that that their uniqueness and quality wasn’t lost in the manufacturing process, which is why we’ve partnered with some great manufacturers to keep the same attention to detail but at a fraction of the cost.”

Currently, Angel has three FuzzlePuff designs to choose from - Skulkin, Flutterby and Tripsy.

All have unique characteristics and personalities which Angel says are somewhat similar to those of the animals they are based on. Their names too are based on collective nouns of said animals.

Angel is also in talks for a pilot episode for television that will feature the characters in an animated series.

“We’ve had some really great feedback and encouragement from the public so far and we’re excited to see the business expand.”

A Montville mother of six and award winning business woman is nominating to represent the Sunshine Coast Council seat of Division 5 in the upcoming local government elections.

Tracie Sanim, owner of business growth consultancies Splash Marketing and PR and Innovate Sunshine Coast, has confirmed that she will run as an independent candidate for the division, which is currently held by retiring councillor Jenny McKay. “Local representation that truly represents the holistic interests of the hinterland community is more important than ever before,” Mrs Sanim said.

“I live in the division; I am a local business owner and my children attend school in the region and I am committed to ensuring a future in our hinterland villages that my children and their children will be proud to call home.

“My experience as a senior executive within various governments as well as a business owner means that I am well positioned to hit the ground running on my election to the council.”

Iconic Barrel reopens its doors

By Lea Parkes Following months of refurbishing and reimagining, The Barrel at Maleny is once again opening its doors, this time at the front of the building, to both locals and visitors to the area.

Those familiar with the venue over its almost 20-year history are sure to be impressed with the visual transformation of the space.

When the renovation started earlier in the year work was focused on the interior of The Barrel to give it a more contemporary feel as well as creating a number of separate function areas through the inclusion of mezzanine flooring.

However, as the work progressed a decision was made to resurface the outside of The Barrel that, while extending the time frames, has transformed the look of the iconic building.

The Barrel is now operating as a cellar door to showcase a range of wonderful wines from

the Granite Belt, as well as craft beers and gourmet food products from across South East Queensland.

At this stage the team from The Barrel is working closely with Whiskey Gully Wine, Granite Ridge Wines, Kominos and Casley Mount Hutton Winery, four well established Stanthorpe-based wineries.

For those who also like a craft beer, you will be pleased to know that they are also working with Cooroy’s Copperhead Brewery to showcase their products.

At this stage The Barrel are selling the wines by either small or large glasses, as well as by the bottle, which you will be able to enjoy with a cheese board or items from a shared plate menu.

Greg Guilford, the Food and Beverage Manager of Clouds Retreats, the owner of The Barrel said they are very proud of what they had created so far and were excited about all the plans they are continuing to work on, particularly the new dining/functions areas.

“We see what we are creating as a great addition to what is currently being offered in the Sunshine Coast hinterland,” Greg said.

One of the next things on the to-do list is to get their monthly winemakers dinners under way, with planning happening for the first event in October.

What has your NDIS experience been like?

Hilary Pearl (pictured) of Montville feels like she is walking taller since her daughter Erin started receiving funding from the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

"It has been overwhelmingly fantastic. I hadn’t realised what a load I was carrying," Hilary said. "My whole life for the past 29 years has been around Erin’s needs.

"One of the incredible things that happened when the funding came through was it was a validation of all the work I do.”

Getting to this point involved some research for Hilary. "I did a lot of preparation for NDIS over the past few years. All those planning meetings and all that advice and listening and so on. I really recommend doing the research.

“I went to two pre-planning meetings with different organisations and that just blew my mind. It made my thinking go from small to big – what was possible!

"I think going through disability systems for the past 29 years has been a case of having to sell how bad things are. NDIS has changed that to looking at goals, looking at the future, looking at possibilities for an ordinary life.

"When we got the funding I wanted everything happening straight away but it did take a few months to get it happening. It’s been great but it’s also been a lot of work.”

Hilary is looking forward to more freedom for herself

now that Erin is being supported through NDIS to live more independently.

Scouts recycling benefits local area

By Jennifer Kent You may have seen the new red Containers for Change bins located around the region recently.

These are provided by the Scout Recycling Centre, with funds raised through the recycling of bottles supporting Scouts Queensland and our local community.

Along with Beerwah Marketplace and Beerwah Village, Spicers Tamarind Retreat, Australia Zoo, Big Kart Track and Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club are among local businesses and community groups working with Scouts Recycling.

Scout Recycling business development manager Gavin Kelly says Scout Recycling pays a fee for the containers directly to the organisation that hosts the collection bin, which in many cases goes back into the local community For example the funds received by the Beerwah Village and Beerwah Marketplace are given to the Glasshouse Country War on Waste group to share in the local community.

Gavin said the bins were well received and while they were filling up slowing, the important thing was that people were becoming more aware of why they were there.

“It’s a great way to fundraise for local clubs and organisations, with money raised being reinvested into the local community,” Gavin said.

“Since the introduction of the Queensland Government initiative in November last year, Queenslanders have really adopted the process and the return rate has been in the high 40% - which is great.”

Not only is it increasing awareness about the benefits of recycling for the environment, it is a great way for the public to support local community projects.

Doors open on first stage

Welcome to a new chamber year and a very special welcome to our new executive!

Taking on a role in an organisation like the chamber is a commitment that keeps you away from your own business for the benefit of the entire business community.

Unfortunately in a lot of cases the business community is not aware of how many hours are spent to work collectively for the betterment of all businesses.

So, a big thank you to our executive!

Last year the chamber started to divert from the usual general meetings with an occasional guest speaker to a more educational agenda. We offered workshops on various topics, we showcased businesses and we introduced the round table discussion.

We hope to build on this and offer valuable events for our members, starting with the first workshop meeting on September 24 at the Beerwah Hideaway. Our presenter is Kay Ridge from the Australian Small Business Advisory Service.

The owners of Sun’s Market Square are keen to encourage customers to come into their new premises and take a look around, they are even offering a free gift for anyone who visits them this week.

Last week they opened the doors on stage one, which includes a small range of quality fruit and veges on the shelves and in the fridges.

Community News Local Ekka champion

It’s not all strawberry ice-creams and sideshow alley for our young locals at the Brisbane Ekka. For 11-year-old Zarah Smolders of Maleny, who recently represented the Maleny Show Society in the natural fibres competition, it was serious work.

Each year this competition attracts amateur dress makers and aspiring designers, giving the competitors the opportunity to display their latest creations in front of an audience of more than 400,000 people.

Zarah entered class 2 of the natural fibres – self-made competition, which required her to make an outfit for any occasion, except swimwear or sleepwear, and the purchase price of the fabrics could not exceed $120.

The garment was to be cut and sewn by the entrant, who could only take advice on how to complete it, and the entrant was required to model the garment for the judges as well.

Zarah won the category for students in years 5-9 against six other entrants. Her outfit was then judged against the winner of class 3, which was for students in years 10-12. She was ultimately awarded the overall champion of the junior selfmade competition.

Her prize package included a Bernina sewing machine and a number of smaller prizes.

Zarah is a student at Narelle Thamm Sewing School and she has been learning for 12 months. Narelle is very proud of Zarah’s achievement and is encouraging her to continue with her sewing.

Planning is already under way for the outfit Zarah will enter in the 2020 competition.

Tom Malone 40 years a fire warden - a lifetime of volunteering

Tom Malone is a man many in the hinterland will recognise and, if you’re lucky enough, you may have had the pleasure of meeting him.

Tomorrow, September 12, Tom celebrates his 90th birthday - proof that when it comes to volunteering and helping out the community age really is no barrier.

Tom - who is not one to boast – says volunteering and being involved in the community is just part of who he is. And he has been continually volunteering for close to 70 years.

“It has been a big part of my life and I’ve been lucky that throughout my life my work has allowed me time to be able to contribute to different projects in the area,” he said.

“I’ve been volunteering since I left school and I feel lucky that I still have the ability to continue with it now.”

For a large part of his life, Tom has been involved with the State Emergency Service (SES) and Rural Fire Brigade. He was pivotal in the establishment of the Maleny and District Rural Fire Brigade. Tom has since retired from those memberships but not before making an impact through many rescues in the region.

In 1980, he was appointed fire warden for the Maleny district and has held that position for almost 40 years. While he is no longer active in fighting fires, he plays an integral part in the overall running of the volunteer fire brigade, which provides an invaluable service to the local region. Tom takes his role very seriously, taking the opportunity to remind the public that fires over 2m require a permit.

Over the years, Tom has been involved in a number of projects throughout the region, many of which continue to have a big impact in our local community. Among his many contributions, Tom was heavily involved with Rotary establishing the caretaker’s residence at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve and pivotal in setting up the Maleny Senior Citizens Club and local soccer club.

Tom has also been heavily involved with St Vincent de Paul Society over the years and was the regional chairman for a number of years. You’ll still see Tom helping out at Landsborough Vinnies, where he provides support for people in need.

Maleny launches 18-hole member drive with three-year deal Maleny Golf Club is offering a special three-year membership option to new members as it prepares to bring the final six holes of the award-winning Sunshine Coast hinterland course into play in early 2020.

Maleny Golf Club, which opened in 2015, is known for its welcoming country hospitality and still has significant growth capacity to accommodate new male, female and junior members interested in playing socially or competitively.

There is currently no nomination fee. Anyone taking up the $2,244 offer will enjoy full gold membership from the day they sign up until 31 October 2022 and avoid anticipated annual fee increases in the meantime. The 2019/2020 full gold membership fee will be $748.

President Dr Max Whitten said the offer represented both good value for money and an opportunity for members and newcomers to help the club fund mowing and maintenance fleet additions to service the expanded 18-hole course.

“We will be bringing the last six of our 18 holes into play early in the new year and have committed to purchasing and leasing additional equipment so we can continue to deliver our high standard of course presentation,” Dr Whitten said.

The current 12-hole, par-46 course incorporates an environmentally low-impact design by golf architect Graham Papworth that preserves and integrates existing wetlands and native flora.

The completed 18-hole course will be comprised of two par 5s, ten par 4s and six par 3s, presenting a par 68 layout featuring unique revetted greenside bunkering, Tifdwarf Bermudagrass greens and kikuyu fairways within a peaceful, scenic hinterland setting.

When asked about the most rewarding part of his volunteering over the years, Tom said there’s no simple answer but being able to support and be supported by others and to have the ability to “help get things done” had always been a part of what he loves about it.

A fine example that age really has no barrier when it comes to volunteering, Tom has no plans of slowing down heading into his 91st year and says life is not much fun if you don’t keep busy.

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell said Tom was simply amazing. “Everywhere I turn in the hinterland, there he is. And such a gentleman.

“Our local area, indeed the state and nation, would grind to a halt if not for our volunteers and Tom has been, and continues to be at 90, one of the best.

“Happy birthday Tom!" Andrew said.

International Peace Day celebrations The significance of International Peace Day will be honoured on Saturday, September 21 by the Cygnet Centre for Peacebuilding and Transformation in Maleny with a two-part arts and culture-based celebration.

The event offers an opportunity for the local community to come together and experience interconnection through a variety of activities, discussion and celebrations that aim to encourage peaceful collaborative communication.

Held under the dome at White Eagle Lodge in Maleny, the afternoon event, titled Growing Peace, will run from 2.30-6pm and include a Welcome to Country, corroboree by local Indigenous group Gifted Murri Unit, collaborative arts activities and talking circle, which will focus around peace, inclusion and reconciliation. The afternoon will include a variety of art and craft activities, including peace flags and talking sticks, a collaborative canvas and messages to be included in the creation of the Peace Tree

during the closing ceremony, alongside music and song.

The afternoon’s creative celebrations will be followed by an evening concert of intercultural sacred music - Harmonies for Peace. Starting at 7pm, the celebration will include performances

by Gifted Murri Unit and Sydney sacred music singers Kim Cunio and Heather Lee. The concert will close with a minute of silence for peace.

Cygnet invites Maleny and surrounding communities to join them on International Peace Day, Saturday, September 21 at White Eagle Lodge, 19 Tesch Road, Maleny.

New water meters for Mooloolah Valley

During September Unitywater will be identifying and replacing water meters nearing the end of their life cycle in Mooloolah Valley.

Affected residents will receive a notification card in their letterbox at least 48 hours before works are undertaken and, if they are home on the day of the work, Unitywater’s authorised contractor will make contact with them before replacing the meter.

Following meter replacement, the contractor will leave a works completed card in the resident’s letterbox that records the water consumption measured by the old meter.

Customers are advised to keep this reading for reference and to cross check when they receive their next Unitywater bill.

Good sign for local school safety Regular drivers on Coonowrin Road at Glass House Mountains will notice that new flashing school zone signs have recently been installed at the Glass House Mountains State School.

Last week the state government also annouced that they will install another four of these across the Sunshine Coast, including two in our area at Peachester State School on Kilcoy-Beerwah Road and Maleny State High School on Bunya Street.

The 40km per hour signs are part of the latest round of the Queensland Government’s $12 million flashing school zone program.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said flashing signs played an important role in alerting motorists that they were entering a school zone, reminding drivers to slow down and keep an eye out for children.

“The community has been very passionate in advocating for new flashing signs and it’s great to be able to secure it for these schools,” Mr Bailey said.

Back in March and again in May, thousands of school students and their supporters across the nation took to the streets in a day of action to call for better climate leadership from elected representatives.

On September 20, three days before the UN Emergency Climate Summit, another event – the Global Climate Strike – is planned across the world, with a local event to be held at Cotton Tree Park, Cotton Tree.

Starting at 12noon, the event is being promoted as family friendly and is a coordinated effort between Students Strike 4 Climate, Australian

Sister act hits Maleny The hills are alive with the sound of the Harvey Sisters!

Hailing from busy Brisbane, Marybeth and Clementine Harvey are the Harvey Sisters, specialising in enchanting live performances and quality music tuition.

After successfully conducting Harvey Sisters Music in Brisbane for the past four years, the talented musical duo recently spent a weekend away in Maleny, and it was love at first sight.

“The peace and serenity, the friendliness of the locals and, of course, the stunning scenery won us over completely,” Marybeth said.

Running their music school for more than 120 students in Brisbane and performing at various live events, both sisters felt inspired by the magic of Maleny and it wasn’t long before they felt the pull to move. Setting up their new rehearsal and teaching space in a beautiful Queenslander set in glorious gardens just three minutes from town, the women are excited to be bringing their musical talents to the region.

Clementine is an accomplished violinist and pianist. She studied her Bachelor of Music at the Queensland Conservatorium and graduated with first class honours in violin. Clementine is often on contract to the Queensland Pops Orchestra and Queensland Festival Philharmonic.

Marybeth is a talented vocalist, pianist and flutist, graduating in the inaugural year of the Queensland Conservatorium’s Bachelor of Music, musical theatre program. Marybeth is often asked by various dance schools and drama academies to coach vocals, movement and acting for their upcoming concerts/productions.

With the start of the cat breeding season, Sunshine Coast Council is calling on all cat owners to make sure their cats are contained to their properties.

Council’s coordinator of response services Tanya Esser said there had been a substantial increase in the number of cats impounded recently.

“In one week during August we had 19 cats come to the pound and, alarmingly, two were pregnant and only two had microchips and were able to be reunited with their owners,” Ms Esser said.

“Unfortunately at this time of year we often receive cats at the pound that are carrying litters and, had they not been taken to the pound, they have the potential to become feral and have a significant impact on native wildlife.”

Community programs portfolio councillor Jenny McKay said it was imperative for cat owners to do the right thing.

“When a cat becomes part of your family you become responsible for its health, welfare and the impact it has on your surrounding community,” Cr McKay said.

Your cat is your responsibility. Responsible cat ownership means registering your cat with council each year, making sure your cat is microchipped and keeping your cat contained at all times.

Lifetime cat registration is available for only $81 for cats that have been de-sexed and microchipped.

Microchipping your cat is the best way to ensure it can be returned to you if it is found roaming.

Council officers who collect a wandering cat will do their best to return it home in the first instance but too many cats are not microchipped and this often means they have to go to the pound to wait for their owner.

While de-sexing your cat is not compulsory, it will help to reduce unwanted litters.

Cats are not allowed to roam off your property, so this may mean you need to adjust your fencing or build a cat enclosure if you want your cat to exercise outside.

If your cat is found wandering from your property you may receive a fine of $266. If your cat is impounded you may face an impound fee of $252 as well as daily care and sustenance fees. welcome new stall holders and we look forward to seeing them again in November.

Contributed by Helen Jakeman As we enter another fire season, which could be long and hot, we have been conducting some hazard reduction burns for landowners in preparation for the season ahead. However, we feel that these burns are most likely coming to an end for this year unless we get some substantial rain.

After our AGM in August there were a few changes with the officers.

Our long serving officer Kev Sedgman decided to resign as an officer but he will continue to be a very valuable and active member of our brigade. We would like to thank Kev for all of his extra time and expertise while serving as an officer over the past 18 years and we know he will continue to support our brigade and be prepared to be a mentor to our new members.

Our committee and officer list is: first officer - Mark Jakeman, second officer - Sam Mooney, third officer - Trevor Jakeman, fourth officer - Mike Noonan, fifth officer - Casey Hogan, chairman - Paul Fishburn, secretary Helen Jakeman and treasurer - Linda Young.

Community groups and services of the Glasshouse Country area are invited to a free workshop on community disaster management on Thursday, September 19, from 9.30am-12.30pm at the Church on the Rise, Beerwah.

Community development worker Natasha Odgers said the interest and need for this workshop came from a community disaster management workshop held in March this year.

“At that workshop, local community groups and services discussed for the first time how we could all support one another in the case of a natural disaster.

“From this, we now have a draft Community Directory of Resources for use in times of natural disasters or local emergencies,” Natasha said.

The upcoming workshop will be a valuable opportunity for local groups and services to connect and strengthen relationships, explore how groups could coordinate disaster management arrangements and preparedness, understand existing disaster management arrangements and consider how to support them.

This workshop is hosted by the Hinterland Community Development Program (Caloundra Community Centre), Celebrate Glasshouse Country, Sunshine Coast Council and the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services.

The venue is at 27 Beerwah Parade, Beerwah and lunch will be included.

This group of women are almost invisible. They don’t self-identify as homeless or in housing stress but they tend to move frequently, couch surf, house sit, sleep in their vehicles or go into unstable share situations.

Women over 55 become homeless due to a range of reasons including spousal death, Jeanie Hore, Natasha Odgers and Viki Blaik separation or divorce, domestic violence, mental ill health or family breakdown.

Glass Housing 55 aims to develop a pilot model for a collective of housing to provide long term stability and community inclusion.

The new community group will meet on Friday, September 27 at 10am at the Celebrate Glasshouse Country office, which is downstairs in the Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall.

People interested in being part of a local solution to this housing issue and those who may have knowledge and skills to offer, such as approaches to government, are encouraged to come along.

Walking group - the Mooloolah Mob Contributed by Helen Weil Mooloolah’s Heart Foundation walking group is still walking each Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings starting at 6.30am now that it is spring.

We meet at Martin Rungert Park in Mooloolah, right in the centre of town, and walk a variety of routes around the local area. Walking is for about an hour and it is a great way to start the day and to make new friends.

This is a National Heart Foundation group activity with certificates and awards for number of walks and attaining certain goals. Most of all it is about staying active and healthy in a friendly social environment.

You don’t have to walk every day or for the whole hour – just do as much as you feel you can. We have our speedy walkers who cover a greater distance and we have our more relaxed walkers who maintain an average steady pace but we all walk and that is what is important.

Consider coming along to enjoy the social aspect of belonging to a friendly group as well as the health benefits of regular walking.

Maleny Rotary Club members have been busy preparing photographs entered in the club’s 2020 Calendar Photo Competition for public display at Maple 3 Café in Maple Street Maleny.

All 65 entries, including 13 prize winners, are now displayed for public viewing until the end of the month for those interested in checking the talents of our local amateur photographers.

Competition and calendar production organiser Lionel Tilley said he continued to be amazed by the quality of the photos received since the start of the project in 2008.

“Images of the hinterland landscapes, local events and quirky accidental incidents captured in the winning photos and featured in each year’s calendar have all helped make the project a great success for the club,” he said.

Lionel said many people who buy the calendar each year purchase multiple copies to send to friends around Australia and overseas, making it a wonderful way to showcase the area to the world.

“This is not the only benefit of the calendar project because it also provides an opportunity for local photographers to highlight their talent to the wider world and it means the funds raised can be used by the club to help our local community,” he said.

The price of the calendars remains at $5 and they will be available from midSeptember from various local businesses.

Lionel urged anyone with innovative ideas for projects that could benefit the community to think about joining the Maleny Rotary Club.

“We would welcome people with original ideas and, of course, anyone who wants to have an opportunity to give back to the community,” Lionel said.

The club recognises that community-minded people, especially those raising families, might not have time to attend regular meetings so modern Rotary is all about being flexible and accommodating its members’ needs.

The hinterland’s newest Lions Club - Blackall Range Lions Club - with 33 members will hold its charter night at Flaxton Gardens on Saturday, November 2. Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club and district governor Donna Hedges will sponsor the club Maleny Blackall Range Lions president David Coffey said he was proud to welcome these men and women into the Lions family. “I am sure that the Montville, Flaxton and Mapleton communities will be proud to have such a fine group serving their communities,” he said.

The club is already involved with the creation of the Blackall Range Lions Calendar, the running of the annual Welcome to the hinterland dinner, sponsoring of Montville State School’s most academically improved award for all grades, and several other worthy activities in their communities.

Locals will have the opportunity to see the works of some of the nation’s most acclaimed wildlife artists when the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve hosts the Holmes Art Prize for Realistic Australian Bird Art exhibition from Wednesday, September 11 to Sunday, October 13.

The exhibition, now in its fifth year, showcases two-dimensional realistic bird art, with entries depicting a range of birdlife scenes.

There have been 35 finalists announced including Peta Boyce of Mooloolah Valley, Gail Higgins of Glass House Mountains and Bernardine Hine of Caloundra, who are in the running to win the $15,000 major prize.

Internationally renowned environmentalist and Australian artist, Richard Weatherly OAM, is this year’s judge and is well placed to assess the work.

“It is an honour to be judging this year’s prize. The calibre of the 35 artists and work that has been selected is outstanding and the Sunshine Coast is very fortunate to have an exhibition of this national standard,” Mr Weatherly said.

“It’s no easy feat to capture the beauty and essence of these amazing animals, so I’ll be paying close attention to the composition of the works, brushwork and even the artists’ understanding of colour theory.”

Entry is free and is open to the public, with the People’s Choice Award announced on final day of the exhibition.

Mooloolah River Landcare Contribute to your local environment

Mooloolah River Landcare (MRL) is seeking volunteers to join its management committee to support the organisation’s ongoing success.

President Tim Odgers said the organisation was seeking volunteers for two key roles as part of the management committee. “We would love to hear from people with experience and ability who wish to contribute to their community and environment,” Tim said.

“With our 22nd annual general meeting just around the corner, we are seeking talented people to join the management committee in the roles of secretary and treasurer. We have a book keeper and can provide mentoring and support for these important positions.”

With more than 21,000 native plants in the MRL nursery, multiple projects, more than 7,000 hours of volunteer labour last financial year and a growing presence in the community, Tim said MRL was at an exciting point and was looking for people with accounting and administration skills who wanted to build their business administration skills “while contributing to the strategic operation of our wonderful organisation”.

Take me Away Consider Cambodia

Glass House Mountains couple Mary Anne and Bill Grace love to travel and recently had a two-week holiday in Cambodia. Mary Anne was keen to share their experience and encourage others to put Cambodia on their bucket list of places to visit. Mary Ann said the couple did not take tours but did lots of research and planned their own trip.

Here they describe their experiences for our readers While Cambodia is not for the faint-hearted, it is definitely a delight for open minded and adventurous people.

We started in Phnom Penh and initially stayed in the riverfront tourist area, which is well cared for and clean, and later stayed in a local area out of the centre where you are more likely to find poverty, squalor and mounds of rubbish. Both areas had a sense of being in Asia and loving it.

The cost of living is low. If you eat where the locals go, you can have two dishes of food and several beers for $US8 (about $AUS12). This is a cash society and they trade in American dollars as well as their own riel. You may pay in one currency and get change in the other. It is imperative to have plenty of low denomination US currency as many traders will tell you they don’t have change for big notes.

There is a seething mass of traffic that always works itself out. For us, with such a structured road system, it is surprising and exciting when there seems to be no rules but there are very few accidents. The scooter riders are fearless, skilful, patient and acutely spatially aware. The tuk tuk drivers know their place and are respected by all the cars and trucks. Tuk tuks are a wonderful way to get around. We found Alex and used him the whole time

we were there. We are happy to pass on his WhatsApp number to anyone considering Cambodia as he was honest, reliable and spoke good English.

We visited the Genocide Museum by tuk tuk and took the audio tour. While it was incredibly confronting, it is also a way of understanding what the country went through and why it is important to spend your tourist dollar to help them rebuild.

We never felt unsafe or uncomfortable. The people are so pleasant natured and polite. The tuk tuk drivers can be pushy but we must consider that they are in survival mode.

Siem Reap is a happy bustling little city. We visited the temples of Ankor Wat, Ankor Thom and the Royal Temple. We took an organised tour (8.30am) and were glad we did as the guide was incredibly knowledgeable.

The sheer size is amazing and the history is riveting.

We also visited Kep, a seaside town on the southern coast. It was a long bus ride, mainly due to the state of the roads, but well worth it. It is renowned for fresh crabs and we weren’t disappointed. We also rode a tuk tuk to a pepper farm and came home with some amazing peppercorns.

Cambodia was a wonderful experience – at times confronting, at times heartbreaking but mostly heart-warming and fun. Consider Cambodia and go and make memories!

Landsborough Community Kindergarten was very thankful to the Glasshouse Rotary Club for allowing us to collaborate with their Australia Zoo carpark fundraiser, that is held each school holidays.

With the support of our beautiful kindy parents who donated their time over the holiday period, we were able to fill the volunteer roles directing carpark traffic.

It was an honour to receive a cheque from Ian Hope from the Rotary Club of Glass House Mountains last week.

It will be put to good use, allowing us to continue to provide an incredible kindergarten experience for children both local to Landsborough and those in the surrounding Glasshouse region.

We are very grateful for the support from local organisations, like the Rotary - as well as the incredible parents that we have as part of our kindergarten family!

Dastardly spying

There seems to be a lot in the news about spying. Chinese-Australian writer Yang Hengjun is accused of spying and East Timor's celebrations remind us Australian spies bugged East Timor's cabinet rooms. All this supposedly vital information we have to glean or suppress, depending on which side of the fence we are on, although the district covered by the GC&M News may not have lots of lurking secrets.

If the Australian Government disbanded ASIO and retrenched the spies, then put out a statement saying any information any person requested would be made available, I wonder if anyone would bother making a request.

In spite of the rain, the day went very well and everyone was interested in the history of Morris House and the old photos we had on display.

The kids enjoyed the face painting and everyone enjoyed the sausage sizzle and the cake.

Water shortage and who cares?

We would like to sincerely thank Terry and his staff at the Landsborough Hotel for their continued support of our brigade and for all the organising that goes into running such a successful pig race day.

On Saturday, August 24 we were able to help out the Lions with the food at the Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival. Once again this was a very successful day with all funds raised going to the Queensland Cancer Council.

Each year the men and women of the Lions Club arrive early on the Saturday morning and prepare and cook the food for the event.

They are a great group of people who continue to volunteer their time at many different events in the area and we would like to thank them also for continuing to show their support of our brigade.

Levi Powell, Lucy Bauer, Edward Simpson and Ian Hope On the Saturday night news our PM stands and says that he is standing beside us, knowing your adversity.

However, what is he or his government doing about it? Our local federal member has done bugger all to my knowledge.

Water is a marvelous commodity. Everyone needs it, uses it and our stock, pastures and animals also require it, but who cares that it is no longer readily available?

Our rivers, dams and lakes are dry, or are not running or supplying sustenance to our towns, people, stock or the wildlife who cannot talk for themselves.

Farmers are not planting crops, towns are suffering rain water shortages having water tanked in so that they can survive and still our glorious Prime Minister and his group of useless members do nothing.

Australians come a very poor last. Who gives a bugger about the bush? Not that many voters out there to worry about.

During bushfires where do the firefighters and the volunteers who place their lives on the line get water to assist them to fight the bushfires and save property, people, homes, livestock, crops and animals in the bush?

I am disgusted in our Australian Government, especially the bloke I voted in.

Put Australia first, get your bums into gear and wake up. Australia needs you to do something about this water shortage.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the Ord River Scheme in Western Australia can supply the whole of Australia with water with pipelines, solar, holding dams and, if required, use the desalination plant in Brisbane that has never been used.

Re: Beerwah Intersection

In response to Brent Hampstead’s letter regarding the Peachester Road and Old Gympie Road intersection at Beerwah, I would like to point out that it is the tireless efforts of locals that has seen the intersection upgrade being delivered. The government is simply responding, finally, to what locals have demanded for decades.

Members of the community have signed multiple petitions, penned countless letters to the editor and written innumerable requests to the Minister for Main Roads highlighting an extremely dangerous intersection in dire need of an upgrade.

I believe we should acknowledge their persistence and celebrate with them a successful outcome rather than try to score some cheap political point.

August was a busy month for us, first at the pig races that were held at the Landsborough Hotel.

Terry Morrow has run this event for the past seven years and all proceeds raised from the day are donated to local organisations.

This year Beerwah Glasshouse United Soccer, Lions Club of Beerwah, Landsborough State School P&C and the Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade were the lucky beneficiaries.

Your paper provides a valuable service to our local community, but I'm not happy to keep on reading alarmist letters whipping up baseless hysteria about "the dangers of electromagnetic radiation".

Regularly letters that are included, while sounding authoritative, actually have no credible scientific basis.

It's important for those of us wanting better phone and internet connectivity to understand this, and the ABC just happens to have compiled a clear, excellent and easily understood explanation of this by Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, which your readers should find most illuminating. Federal Member for Fisher Getting a handle on housing in the hinterland In August I brought the Assistant Minister for Community Housing and Homelessness Luke Howarth to the hinterland for a community housing roundtable at the Landsborough School of Arts. At the meeting we heard from local organisations working in our region, like Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, IFYS and Glass Housing 55, about the housing pressures facing vulnerable people in our community. The assistant minister left with a much more detailed understanding of the issues that some of our residents are facing and I know that he will take those lessons back to Canberra. I have brought many ministers to Fisher over the past three years and I will keep doing so in the future because I want our experience on the Sunshine Coast to be front of mind when the government makes big decisions.

Remembering Ziza with the Maleny Light Horse I recently had the honour of officially naming the new training grounds for the 5th Light Horse Regiment, Maleny Troop. The troop has named the field Ziza after one of the Great War’s most unique actions. If you don’t know the story I would urge you look it up. In the midst of a terrible and bloody conflict at Ziza, the character, the compassion and the courage of the Australian Light Horse truly shone through. The federal government provided the Maleny Troop with a grant to pay for the construction of a fence for the training grounds to keep everyone, including the animals, safe. I want to thank the Maleny Troop for inviting me to name the field and for letting me don the slouch hat and ride one of their magnificent horses myself.

Leading the fight against eating disorders This month the federal Health Minister Greg Hunt visited Mooloolah Valley to turn the first sod on construction of endED Butterfly House. This new facility is going to be the first ever specialist residential treatment facility for eating disorders in the country and will mean that vulnerable people will have the option to be treated in the best possible home-like environment. It will make the Sunshine Coast hinterland truly a national leader in the treatment of these insidious conditions.

The federal government has provided $6 million to support the construction of the house and to pay for its operation during the first four years.

However, without the passion and commitment of Mark and Gayle Forbes, and the generous support of dozens of local businesses on the Coast who have made pledges and donations towards construction, this project could never have happened.

State Member for Glass House Dinner at Parliament for bursary winner Last month, I was delighted to finally read out and table in Parliament the winning essay from the inaugural Joyce Newton OAM Memorial Bursary, written by Glasshouse Christian College student Jessica Perro. As part of the bursary prize, Jessica and her family were invited to join me for dinner at Parliament House and a private tour of the Parliament. I then read and tabled Jessica’s essay while Jess and her family were in the gallery.

It was fantastic to be able to pay tribute to Joyce in this way and I know she would have been proud of Jessica’s essay and advocacy for the Glass House region. Jessica and her family were also treated to a special visit by the leader of the LNP, Deb Frecklington MP, who wanted to personally congratulate the young winner.

Also joining the Perro family was Joyce’s daughter, Jennifer Tunley. Mrs Tunley explained that the evening would have actually been her mum and dad’s 47th wedding anniversary so it was a pretty bittersweet night. However, she knows that her mum would have been honoured by the bursary and delighted at the fact that it was such a bright young woman who won it.

Next year Jessica hopes to head off to the University of Queensland at Gatton to study agriculture and work towards a PhD in this field.

Now she has a $1,000 prize at Concept IT to help her prepare for those studies!

Flashing lights delivered at Glass House Together with parents, teachers and community members, I have been fighting to get flashing lights installed at Glass House Mountains State School for years. Earlier this week, I was thrilled to finally be able to announce that those lights have been delivered and installed. Thank you so much to all of you who lobbied with me to achieve this outcome for the school.

I have also secured flashing lights for Peachester State School. These lights have not yet been installed but they have been announced. As another school that was in desperate need of the lights, I'm so pleased for them. However, the fight isn't over yet! Hinterland Kids Goombuckar Bus visit Contributed by Kylie Merola

The Goombuckar Bus recently visited Landsborough State School as part of this year's incursions program.

The bus has been converted into a mobile Indigenous learning platform to become a living history and storytelling experience.

During the three-day visit all students had the opportunity to learn about our local Indigenous places, people and culture first hand.

Some lessons were held inside the bus where the children were told stories and shown videos.

There were also outdoor lessons where students experimented with face painting with ochre and painting Indigenous pictures.

Many masterpieces were created! It was a fantastic cultural lesson for everyone involved.

Muddy partnership

Contributed by Anita Smith Glenview State School prep and lower school students have recently become the very lucky recipients of two fantastic new mud kitchens.

The mud kitchens were acquired for the lower school children by the Student Council, who generously raised funds across the year to give back something to the school before they graduate to high school.

To provide younger students with play equipment that meets their physical needs, the school engaged the skills and expert knowledge of the Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed.

Ian Collingwood and Andy Henry were tasked with this specific project and were able to come up with a design that was functional and sturdy but that also met the safety requirements of Education Queensland. Ian, Andy and their coworkers Terry Howard and Ron Watson sourced the materials and created two pieces of play equipment that not only look great but will also survive many seasons in the playground for Glenview students.

The kitchens will no doubt provide many hours of enjoyment and intellectual growth for a multitude of children.

Kindy open day

The Landsborough Community Kindy is holding an open day on Saturday, September 21 from 9.30-11am. Families are invited to enrol children for 2020 kindy places now.

The kindy will offer a five-day fortnight model in 2020, giving families the choice of beginning or end of week groups.

Bring the family to the open day to experience everything the kindy has to offer.

An apple for the teacher Contributed by Deb Lawrence Eight of the teachers at Beerwah State School were recently nominated for their hard work with the chance of being crowned the region’s favourite teacher.

What a celebration that so many teachers at Beerwah State School are celebrated by the students, staff and parents.

Beerwah State School offers a safe and supportive environment and a 21st century curriculum. It has been recognised by the community as a positive place to learn and this has been validated by the many nominations for the Apple for the Teacher competition.

Turning Japanese

Sensei Miller with Giann and Madison and their winning artworks Peachester State School students are falling in love with the Japanese language since Sensei Miller was welcomed to the school as a specialist language teacher in term two. Through lots of fun learning about Japan and its icons and culture, the students have taken on the challenge of learning the language and the results in such a short time are astounding.

The students recently entered artworks in the Japan Festival Sunshine Coast depicting places and things they have learnt about in their Japanese lessons.

The children’s enthusiasm was also evident at the recent University of the Sunshine Coast speech contest.

Anna, Addison, Eden, Keeley and Archie competed with 165 other students from years 3-6.

Congratulations to Keeley who was awarded highly commended for her Japanese year 4 speech.

Out & About Bogan trivia on the hill

Peachester State School P&C recently hosted the winter edition of its ever popular trivia night fundraiser for the school’s Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden.

Those attending enthusiastically embraced the evening’s theme of Flannos and Ugg boots with locals turning up in their best flannos and uggies.

Much consideration was also placed on choosing team names, which included the Feral Animals, Once Were Bogans, Team Shazzza, The Motley Crew and Ava Go Ya Mugs.

It was the Feral Animals who took out the night’s competition. No one was sure if having the local MP and former Minister for Environment Andrew Powell gave them any added advantage.

Past battle honoured

The 5th Light Horse Regiment, Maleny recently celebrated the official naming of their training field that adjoins their Beersheeba Museum in Maleny. The field was named Ziza in honour of the 5th Light Horse Regiment’s involvement in the Battle of Ziza almost 101 years ago during World War I. The Maleny Troop was joined by representatives from the 2nd Light Horse Regiment, Woombye Troop, Cooroy and District Memorial Troop, Australian Army Veterinary Corps and the Queensland Mounted Infantry Historical Troop for a training session.

A newly formed group of artists, called Hinterland Artists – Maleny and Beyond, have joined together with the Bribie Island Contemporary Art Group for an exciting joint exhibition entitled Collaborations, which will be held at the Mathew Flinders Gallery from September 17-October 6.

From moo cows to sea cows, bunyas to Bribie pines, members of the two groups share different aspects of this amazing country in South East Queensland in paintings, drawings, art prints, pottery and glass blowing. It is an exciting display that features original art by local artisans.

Artists from the Sunshine Coast hinterland aim to offer opportunities for members to be exposed to workshops, creative opportunities, exhibiting, shows, competitions and outings.

There will be an official opening on Saturday, September 21 from 2-4pm. Everyone is welcome to come along and entry is free.

Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Based on the biography of Manhattan writer Lee Israel (Melissa McCarthy), Can You Ever Forgive Me? was an instant critical success when it was released in 2018, winning 48 awards at international film festivals and later being nominated for another 85. Israel earned a living writing biographical profiles of celebrities until she was plagued by writer's block, debt and alcoholism. Trying to find a way out of her problems, she turned to forgery - at which she proved highly successful. She forged letters from deceased celebrities so convincingly that her stalled career was revitalised, emboldening her to steal authentic letters from libraries and archives, replacing them with her forgeries. In these criminal pursuits she was assisted by old friend and drug dealer Jack Hock (Richard E Grant). Of course, it's only a matter of time before the FBI catch up with them. When Israel is advised by her lawyer to appear contrite in court, she insists on being honest, saying that she enjoyed creating forgeries although she did regret the restrictions it placed on her true creative potential. This tragicomedy with its witty, intelligent script and its depiction of two slovenly people lacking in basic house training, while devoted to a similarly ill-trained cat, will both disgust and delight. Portrayals of the eccentric but brilliant Israel and her dubious sidekick Hock were widely praised by critics. Overall, this is a very human story about loneliness, fear of failure and the need for forgiveness.

With all the stories about dogs being baited in parks around Brisbane, I saw a comment the other day from someone who thought their dog had been baited but the vet found that it had been affected

by Brunfelsia (yesterday, today, tomorrow). It was a good reminder that the backyard can be such a dangerous place for our pets.

Brunfelsia is a common garden shrub but the leaves and the fruit are very poisonous to dogs, cats, cattle and people.

It is mostly dogs and cattle that are affected, just because dogs will chew on the leaves and fruits, as will cattle if they have access to the plants.

The fruits are the most toxic parts and it takes as little as a dog eating 5g of fruit per kilogram of its weight to cause death.

In dogs, the visual affects are very similar to snail bait and strychnine poisoning.

Symptoms include salivation, vomiting, diarrhoea, incoordination, tremors and convulsions.

Convulsions can be brought on by touch or loud noises. The convulsions – if severe enough – can result in the animal dying.

Symptoms start about two hours after eating the plant and death can take up to 48 hours. Getting the animal to the vet quickly will make a big difference, as treatment is successful if it’s intensive and early.

There are some good resources around to identify poisonous plants, one being the book called ‘Poisonous 2 Pets’ by Nicole O’Kane.

The courtyard garden had a good range of plants, the patio was filled with potted plants and hanging baskets and the small shade house was crammed with a variety of orchids and foliage plants.

Everything was flourishing. We enjoyed lunch while admiring the courtyard and enjoying the peace and quiet. Some members collected a few cuttings and thanks to Coral for her hospitality and Coral Beutel receives some advice from John Innes an enjoyable day.

Next meeting is a week early, this Thursday, September 12 at 9.30am at the Peachester Hall. We would love to see some new members join our small group.

Sport Maleny Bowls Club

Grand Final winners Beerwah Bulldogs U16's were victorious in their Grand Final game this season, beating Bribie by 20-18.

It was a tough season due to player injuries, but the Bulldogs fought hard to the very end, showing great sportsmanship, team pride and fantastic skills.

The majority of the boys have been coached by Glenn Tomokino since U12's and it was fitting that they secured the win to celebrate their last year as juniors and also to farewell Glenn as he takes a break from coaching.

Two of our players were awarded accolades at the Sunshine Coast JRL presentation, Mitchell Jennings was named Representative Player of the Year and Riley McMillan was named U16 Division 2 Player of the Year.

This was a fantastic result not only for the boys but also the club.

The parents, grandparents, team staff and sponsors support throughout the year has been invaluable.

Wednesday numbers were down in some teams last week because of players on holidays but thanks to the creativity of Miles Allen some excellent games were arranged and all players catered for. It was great to have Tony Yorkston back on deck playing and supervising the barbeque. The Musketeers still have that winning feeling.

Friday scroungers was our monthly final. Using finals format, where the winners at the end of 15 ends play off, saw Miles Allen, Wendy Bulger, Dave Edwards and Ben Fawns contest the final.

Congratulations to all who played with Ben Fawns coming out on top. Well done Ben. Well done to all those teams that travelled last week. Teams recorded good wins at both Mapleton and Kilcoy. Thanks again to all who help us meet our club commitments.

The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker Bill Habner from Nambour Club visited recently and was treated to a friendly game of association with Donna Manning that resulted in a 12-all draw. Gillian Bradley and Vince Carbery played well to beat Bev Sockhill and Kath Smith 10–5.

The last round of the Bray Shield was played on Saturday. Nambour brought Robyn Pettman and Noel Stoddart up the hill to play our team of Sarah Widin and Kath. Sarah beat Robyn in their singles game 16–8. Kath and Noel were drawn after two and a half hours so a golden hoop situation decided the game. This means that the next player to score a hoop wins the game.

After four turns apiece, adding to the tension, Kath unfortunately lost 18–19. It was bad luck but well played. In the doubles Noel and Robyn beat Sarah and Kath 26–6, which meant that Nambour won the round two games to one.

Coaching for beginners and others is available on the laid-back lawns at the bottom of the Maleny Showgrounds from 8-10am on Saturdays.

Last Saturday our club hosted some of the men’s pennant semi-finals and there was a big crowd on hand to watch. Division three Brighton got up over Solander 63-44. Division six Toombul got up over Brighton 40-25.

Division nine came down to the last end where Dayboro beat Aspley 45-44. A big thank you to our umpires Bruce Angus, Rob Scullion, Barry Kirk and Chris Dougan and thanks also to Bill Tumbridge who sold raffles.

October is Bowls Queensland’s state-wide Come and Try Lawn Bowls month. On Sunday, October 20 our club will host a come and try day, or bring a friend day, who can be a friend, a family member, grandchild, neighbour, anyone you can think of. Time is 11am to 1pm with a free sausage sizzle. We need to introduce new people to our club for us to have a future.

The Glass House ladies springtime fours will be on Monday, September 16. Cost is $20 per player. A 9am morning tea for a 9.30am start of play. The format is mixed fours, 21 ends with a lady to skip and men to play lead or second. A sheet is at the club to put your name down or please contact Noelle Dean for more information. It should be a fantastic day.

The mixed singles draw is up with 32 players participating, which is a great turnout. Please be aware of when your game is and make sure you organise a marker for rounds one, two and three. Round one, part one is at 9.30am on Saturday, September 21 and round one, part two the same day at 12noon.

Recently the under 11 junior players from the Beerwah rugby league team held their club breakup at our club and played some barefoot bowls. All the kids had a fun time with a big thanks to Bill Tumbridge and Jimmy Tatum who assisted on the day.

Our AGM will be held in the dining room of Club Glass House at 9.30am this Saturday, September 14. Morning tea along with a free drink of your choice will be provided to those that attend the meeting at 10am.

Even though the strong, coastal wind made shots more difficult for all players, persistence and teamwork proved to be the winning formula for the Wagtails. Gerry Gabriel, Cynthia Garvey, Jan Maguire and Sonia Douglas were tenacious during the hardfought games and finished victors on the day against the Maroochydore TTs. With four sets each and a score of 37-31, it was a very welcome win for the Wagtails.

The Whistlers had a forfeit win.

The Wildcats travelled to Caloundra to compete against the Skylarks. The wind was horrendous. The ball was lined up then it wasn’t. Both sides battled against each other and the wind. Unfortunately, Pauline Fraley, Stacey English, Jenie Riding and a big thanks to Lucy Purcell from Yandina came up two games short. Final score 3-5 sets, 35-37 games.
