Hi Everyone Well finally things are getting back on track – we actually have a five day working week this week and almost everything in our office has been unpacked and now has a place.

Choosing to move office over the Easter period seemed like such a smart move, somehow I thought that I could be so organised that I would be able to organise a smooth transition for everyone and that there would be no glitches.

Wow, who was I kidding! Moving is a complex task that just has to be gotten through and not something you can control every aspect of.

However we have been settling in well and have had plenty of locals drop in to see us, and admire the new premises. We didn’t realise just how much speculation there had been as to who would be moving into the building.

We have been pretty vigilant with

our renovation to keep considering the ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’ approach, and now that we have found a home for everything – with plenty of items we no longer require have been sent to the recycle market.

Although we have one big thing that we do have to sell and that is a Hyundai Getz. It is a cute little 3 door, black, 2004 model and best off all it is automatic.

The car has been well loved and cared for with all its servicing done

by Hyundai. Check out the ad at the bottom of the classifieds.

And thanks to everyone who had popped in to welcome us to Glass House Mountains.

Each of the prep rooms were set up for different activities but the highlight was the ‘Throne Room’. To the strains of Roy Orbison’s ‘Pretty Women’, each child escorted their mum down a fairy-light pathway to the beautifully decorated throne. The mums were then asked to sit for an official portrait with their very own little prince or princess.

Every mum deserves the royal treatment now and again.

The money was raised by IGA’s customer services manager Gayle Amos, staff and customers through both raffles and donations.

“The community was very generous, they are always generous,” Gayle said. “Helen Taylor donated a prize-winning teddy bear that she had hand-made to be raffled, and the donations snowballed from there,” she said.

Other customers donated a painting, a large porcelain doll, a patchwork quilt, a patchwork bag and a big floral arrangement in a vase. All were raffled.

There were also collection tins at each register.

The Salvation Army will distribute the funds raised to flood victims.

Kevin’s art on show at car boot sale

The Beerburrum School of Arts committee are running the Beerburrum School of Arts Car Boot Sale which take place on May 21. A highlight will be ceramicist Kevin Grealy and his works. According to Beerburrum School of Arts Secretary Bronwyn Bossley, “Kevin has also been a great supporter of our School of Arts hall.”

Ms Bossley also said a car boot sale can bring out many talented people, such as Kevin, who are part of the local community.

Working in his studio at the Old Bakehouse, Kevin produces wood fired stoneware and porcelain, some of which is represented in several State galleries, the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney, the Australian National Gallery in Canberra and in ceramic museums in the People’s Republic of China - in Shanghai, Jindezhen, Shanxi and Foshan.

Kevin’s work is also represented in several publications in Australia and in China and he was commissioned to design and construct several large scale public artworks for Australia’s Bicentenary Celebrations as well as corporate gifts for large companies such as the Ronson Corporation and Australian Paper Mills’ 75th Anniversary.

Kevin has worked as a ceramic consultant for the heavy clay industry in Australia, for the ceramic industry in Vietnam and as a design consultant for the Hualien Ocean Marine Project in Taiwan.

In 2004, Kevin was appointed Advisor and Ceramicist Kevin Ambassador to the city of Jingdezhen for its Grealy who will Millennium of Porcelain Celebrations. Kevin feature at the is presently assisting the Friendly Cities May car boot sale committee of the Sunshine Coast Council in negotiations with the city of Jingdezhen and is planning a tour to visit that city for its International Ceramic Fair in October.

As an artist Kevin believes that in order to grow, you must keep moving on to new ideas and challenges. This presents the problem of what to do with remaining works from previous periods. He has chosen to present a selection of past works for the Beerburrum Car Boot sale.

National Volunteer Week - lend a hand in the Outback Outback Australia is a stunning place. But to live and work in far-flung parts of the country can be tough. Frontier Services is calling for people to lend a hand in the Outback as part of National Volunteer Week from May 9 - 15 through its program Outback Links.

Volunteers are placed with individuals and families living in remote locations who need help for a short period of time. Last year about 900 volunteers provided help for more than 400 families in the bush.

“People in rural and particularly remote Australia do not have the same support structures that are available to people in cities and towns,” said Outback Links coordinator Davida Melksham.

“The nearest person to ask for help can be a 100 kilometres away.”

Volunteers have travelled the breadth of the country to some of its most remote locations, across desert and bush and through towns with little more than a pub.

One volunteer caught a ride on the postal service plane to Cape York.

Ms Melksham said there was a huge demand for volunteers to lighten the load in remote Australia, particularly for families battered by natural disasters this year.

“At times, these families must cope with added pressures, whether it is flooding or drought, an illness, financial strain or the stress of seasonal workloads. Having an extra set of hands around helps them to get through.”

The volunteers help out in lots of ways. They might be asked to work on the garden, feed the animals, put up a fence, assist with computers or plumbing jobs, look after children or to give a hand on the farm.

Outback Links volunteers Matt and Sarah Smith and their four children drove 1,000 kilometres to an isolated cattle station to lend a hand to a stranger in flood-affected Queensland over their summer break.

SES Carry out Mt Tibrogargan Rescue by Dave Erbacher On Tuesday, May 3, the Glasshouse Mountains SES Group was called to extract an injured person off Mt Tibrogargan. Two young Brisbane sisters who were experienced climbers and well prepared had a successful climb to the top of Tibrogargan. However, when nearing the final steep descent a shower of rain made the rocks very slippery. The 22-year-old slipped and fell four metres and sustained fractures to her left arm. The SES received the call at 3.00pm and a team of six members responded. On arrival, Paramedic Alan from Beerwah and a crew from Buderim attended to the injured. Once the patient was secured in the stretcher, ropes were utilised to lower her down the rock face and to a

position further down the difficult track. From this position the patient was stretchered out to the waiting ambulance. The extraction which was completed at 6.00pm was made more difficult by the constant rain from the storm which swept the area.

The climbers were most appreciative of the efforts of the Ambulance Officers and the SES Team of Tim, Louise, Ross, Dave, Graeme and Roger. SES Group Leader Robert Barry reinforced that it did not matter how experienced climbers were, circumstances and weather can take an unexpected turn and in this case the bare rocks became slippery because of the rain.

Outback Links began in 2006 and relies on the generosity of public donations.

The volunteer workforce includes tradespeople, nurses, teachers, speech pathologists, retired people, backpackers and other travellers.

Groups that currently meet regularly include children’s play groups, craft groups, children church, Neighbourhood Watch meetings, life drawing, spiritualist church, weight loss group, counselling, Hoy group and more.

“Groups are always looking for people to come and join them,” Kelly said. “Or if someone else

wants to start their own group they can do that as well. Hall hire is very reasonable, it works out to be $20.00 for four hours.”

Another important community service they provide is Emergency Relief for people who are finding things a bit tough. Emergency relief assistance is available on Thursdays from 9.00am to 12.00noon. On other days frozen bread and non-perishable items are available.

New entry statements for Beerwah Pineapples are synonymous to Beerwah and Glasshouse Country and that will soon become apparent to everyone who visits.

The hinterland township is set to have its own unique entry sign as part of Sunshine Coast Council’s Caloundra City Image Project.

Division 1 Councillor Anna Grosskreutz said the design for the new sign had been completed and tenders would be called for in the near future.

“The pineapple industry has been and continues to be such an important one for Beerwah and that will be recognised and symbolised in the new town entry signs,” she said.

“Local artist Sarah Rayner came up with the designs and they will materialise over the next few months as the signs are constructed and installed at the entry to the town – the intersection of Steve Irwin Way and the new town by-pass.

“This continues council’s work in designing and installing unique town entry signs in the Glasshouse Country Region, including Landborough, Beerburrum and Glass House Mountains.”

Cr Grosskreutz said council recently installed the first of these township statements at Glass House Mountains as part of the placemaking project for the township.

“Steve Irwin Way is an iconic road with wonderfull landmarks along the scenic drive and the entry statements to each township will add to the look and feel of our region,” she said.

Council takes a new road to recycling When it comes to local roads on the Sunshine Coast, everything old is new again.

Sunshine Coast Council is driving a new approach to utilising old asphalt and gravel road base that was previously trucked into landfills or spoil sites for disposal.

Asset Management and Works Portfolio Councillor Ted Hungerford said council’s Civil Works Services department was recycling previously unwanted road material by incorporating it into local gravel and sealed road maintenance and construction operations.

“This initiative has minimal costs to council but provides numerous benefits, including keeping concrete and asphalt debris out of landfills, saving landfill space,” he said.

“The recycled material is used in a range of activities and this reduces the need for gravel mining.

“Using our own recycled concrete, gravel and asphalt for road works also reduces the pollution involved in trucking material from around the Sunshine Coast and outer areas.”

Cr Hungerford said the recycled materials were typically a product of council’s Road Rehabilitation Program or from road profiling work.

Hi everyone Our chamber will be busy over the coming weeks and we would like to extend an invitation to local business people to come along and see what we’re all about – and to meet up with the dynamic group of business people that are already actively involved in the Chamber.

Over the past few months the Chambers management committee has been working hard to create a schedule of events that will support the needs and interests of our overall membership base. We have developed a schedule of events that included formal meetings as well as networking events and an annual dinner.

General meetings – Wednesday, May 18 is the date of our next General meeting for the year, the meeting will be held at the Glasshouse Sports Club from 5.30pm. This is a formal meeting with an agenda that works through a range of issues and activities that the Chamber is currently working on.

Annual dinner – this year’s annual dinner is on Wednesday, June 8. This is timed to coincide with the Glasshouse Country Festival – an excellent community initiative developed by one of our members, Bob McLean. Our special guest speaker at the dinner will be Mayor Bob Abbott – who will be sharing his views on the business priorities for Council in 2012 and beyond.

It is great for the business community in Division 1 to finally have the chance to provide the Mayor with our views and ideas on our local area.

Reminder – Microsoft/Windows call scam still doing the rounds!

I covered this topic some time back – but it seems it needs a refresh! Not a day goes by in our stores where we don’t have a customer come in reporting a phone call from Microsoft or Windows.

For those who are unaware, this is how the scam works, first someone from India, the Philippines or similar will call you and tell you that they are from ‘Microsoft’ or ‘Windows’ and they have detected ‘errors’ on your computer.

They will then instruct you to do a few things on your computer to show you the error messages.

Finally they will advise you that for a fee, they can remotely access your computer and fix these errors for you.

The facts are that under no circumstances will someone from Microsoft ever call you about your computer. There will ALWAYS be errors in the error log on your computer – this is normal. If you give them remote access to your computer, they can access your personal data.

If you have provided one of these scammers with access to your computer, we would at the very least, recommend taking your machine to a reputable computer repair place for a check up and full virus scan.

If you have provided your credit card to scammers, we would recommend that in addition to the above, cancelling the card immediately and reporting the matter to your bank. These scammers are unscrupulous, and based overseas – providing them your credit card details will very likely lead to other unauthorised transactions on your card. It is best practice to never provide your credit card to anyone who has called you unless you are 100 per cent confident you know who they are, and who they work for.

Metamorphosis for Eclectic Dreams Eclectic Dreams in Landsborough has had another metamorphosis, Heidi and Anne have decided it was time for a revamp and the final results are definitely enchanting.

One customer recently Heidi from Eclectic Dreams described coming into the shop was like looking through her grandmother’s jewel box, she loved the experience so much she just wanted to stay and keep on discovering more treasures.

On Wednesday, May 4, the Glasshouse Country View Club enjoyed a day at Eumundi Markets where all manner of goods were bought to stock up the pantry and the wardrobe. Despite the retail sector complaining of hard times, the Wednesday markets are still extremely popular with the usual hordes of people and

a great atmosphere. The next Club meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 18 at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club at 11.00am for an 11.30am start. This meeting will include lunch and a special guest speaker, Dr James Lergeffner, who will give us a light hearted talk on ‘Baby Boomers’.

VIEW (Voice Interest and Education of Women) clubs are a valued part of the Smith Family, committed to helping disadvantaged Australian children by unlocking opportunities through education.

Fundraiser in the Jungle The Women’s Auxiliary of The Beerwah and Peachester RSL Sub branch Inc. recently held a fundraiser fashion parade compared by their President Kay Farrell.

Over 60 people came along on the day held at Simply Spoilt Hideaway Restaurant at Peachester and enjoyed tropical fruit entrees made by Kay which was followed by a lovely two course lunch in a jungle setting.

The highlight of the day was Tarzan who escorted the models and the $700.00 that was raised to help our war veterans.

William Fraser, killed in action in World War 1 Twenty six year old William (Willie) Fraser was a member of an intrepid band of young Queenslanders when he learned to fly in Brisbane in 1915.

Willie was the son of Janet Fraser (nee Grigor) and John Fraser of Cooloolabin near Yandina.

Grandson of William and Mary Grigor who established Bankfoot House in 1868, William grew up in Cooloolabin and attended Yandina State School.

The training aircraft was a reconstructed Caudron, originally imported from England and flown in flying demonstrations in 1913 in Queensland.

Major McLeod took seven pilots to the UK where they joined the Royal Flying Corps. All served with the RFC on the Western Front in World War 1. Willie was a Second Lieutenant in the 7th Squadron.

The ‘Official History of Australia in the War of 1914 – 18 Volume VIII’ states, ‘There were many Australian pilots in the Royal Air Force . . . in the earlier part of the war, the number of airmen from all oversea dominions was said to amount to over fifty per cent, in both the Royal Naval Air Service and the Royal Flying Corps’.

When I was a relatively new Toastmaster, I believed I was a typical member. I thought most people came to the program looking for the same things I did. But what an amazing revelation this experience has been! I find people joining clubs worldwide who already have very sophisticated communication or leadership skills, people who already possess confidence and self-esteem. I gradually realised there really is no typical new Toastmaster.

As we mentor and support one another in our club environment, we share our own personal greatness.

Toastmaster International is in the education business and we change the lives of men and women around the world, one person at the time, one assignment at the time, each time we receive feedback in the form of applause or a suggestion for improvement.

Willie was killed in action in France on October 25, 1916. He is remembered in the Flying Services Memorial at Arras in northern France.

Willie’s younger brother, John Fraser, enlisted in the Army the following year, and was also killed in action in France.

Their parents, Janet and John (Snr) were left with one remaining child, a son named James Fenwick Fraser.

There is a memorial to the two young men in Yandina cemetery.

Peachester CWA

After our successful markets in February our branch assisted Sue Stokes with her wedding reception in the Peachester Hall. We wish Sue and her husband a long happy future.

This was followed up by the big CWA Expo in Nambour on March 24 with our state president and vice presidents attending. With over 100 visitors it was an outstanding success. Peachester Branch was represented by Joan Kropp cookery convenor for the Nambour North Coast Division assisted by Bev Wild and Coral Beutel floral art convenor.

April was a busy month with our branch making 88 lunch packs for visitors at the floral art garden party held at Margaret Ferris’s. What a wonderful display around the garden with arrangements in the trees, stumps, on logs, you name it, there was a beautiful arrangement there. Congratulations to all who were involved. A big thank you to the horticultural society ladies who helped us out as some of our members were away.

We donated CD’s to Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital to commemorate ANZAC Day and on April 30 we had over 20 stalls at our Mother’s Day Markets in the Peachester Hall. With donated goods for the flood appeal still to be moved on, this was quite a task.

After our meeting on May 5 we were joined by members of Beerwah QCWA for a Mother’s Day Luncheon at Pasta D’Vine. Thank you Sue and staff for making our day so enjoyable with such delightful food and friendly service.

Winners of our Mothers Day Raffle are Aileen Wrayford, Kris, Emma Carr, Joan Kropp, and Bev Gower. Congratulations and thank you to all who bought tickets. Better luck next time.

Also a big thank you to all who helped in any way to set up the hall for the markets and put up banners and signs etc. Your help is truly appreciated.

President John Innes introduced Denise Owen who presented Joan Kropp with the Irene Owen trophy for being the most successful competitor for the previous year.

John and Pam Innes visited the Nambour Garden Club for their Friendship Day. It was a very enjoyable day as the Nambour club has a large membership and guest speaker was Jerry Colbey-Williams of the ABC Gardening Australia fame.

After the meeting closed, members travelled to Mountain View Nursery for lunch. Barbara Power gave a short talk on growing water plants. Water lillies are best grown in pots for ponds. Fertilise in spring and repot in garden soil in spring every few years. If there are goldfish in the pond, spread some gravel on top of the soil. Water lillies need plenty of sun to flower well.

Rosemary Hambleton (owner) spoke about Bat plants. Bat plants are a genus of perennials with rhizomes, grown for their curious flowers.

There are two main types of bat plants, white flowers, jacca integrifolia and black flowers, jacca chantrieri. A native variety, jacca leontopetaloides, is also available. Bat plants grow well in pots with a peaty mix in a humid atmosphere in partial shade. Water sparingly during winter. John Innes thanked both Barbara and Rosemary for their interesting talks. Many members took advantage to purchase more plants for their gardens.

A reminder that the Spring Flower Show will be held on Friday and Saturday, September 9 and 10. The next meeting will be held in the garden of Rob Morris, Thursday, May 19, at 9.30am. Rob has a large and interesting collection of succulents and will be speaking about them. Visitors are always welcome.

Locked Gates at Skippy Park

Access at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve

I recently noticed the gates have been locked at Skippy Park in the late afternoon timeframe. I know this has caused joggers, walkers and those who cycle to be forced to climb fences and crawl under the gates. I am sorry for this and when I discovered the problem requested that the gates not be locked.

Parts of the park are under construction and if residents can keep an eye on the area at night that would be great.

There is also a side gate to the park which requires a rather slushy walk to the cycleway. I will investigate a path connection from the gate.

New Playground for Beerwah

A new playground facility will be installed at Caralan Way Park, in Emma Place, Beerwah.

The playground will be an exciting and usable facility for all local residents and general public, and the equipment will be suitable for children aged two – 12 years.

The new playground equipment will include a double swing, play and climbing system, a spring toy, and a seat glide, all built on softfall material.

Works will commence in June 2011 and the council workmen will endeavour to minimise noise and associated impacts on the nearby community during the construction program.

Wild Dog Baiting

In the Hinterland it is important to keep control of wild dogs. These dogs are dangerous to livestock and pets. Each year the council in conjunction with rural landholders carries out a baiting control program. These people are experienced and know what they are doing.

Early May this program is being conducted with residents being notified well in advance. Please ensure household pets remain in their own yards during this time to ensure they don't come in contact with baits not meant for them.

Cr Anna is available for meetings, by appointment only, at her Beerwah office located in the BADYAC building, in the Beerwah Sportsground Complex on Roberts Road. Please call 5420 8987 to book a time.

At present the construction of the new car park at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve has entered stage two, this means the western end of the car park will be completely closed to traffic and is likely to stay this way for at least four weeks or longer depending on weather conditions.

Revaluation of Properties Advice has been received from the Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM) that the new valuations for the 2011/2012 year, originally due to be issued on March 31, will now be issued to the public in early May. In accordance with the new Land Valuation Act 2010 all non-rural land will be valued using site value methodology (as opposed to the current unimproved value methodology). Rural land will continue to be valued using unimproved value. DERM will commence a public information campaign shortly to educate the public about the impact of the new legislation. Once property owners receive their Annual Valuation Notice by mail, they will have 60 days to object to the new valuation. Information about the new valuations and the objection process will be provided online and via a toll free number. Valuation rolls will be available at DERM offices and Council offices. Valuation information and information on major residential localities will be accessible on the DERM website www.derm.qld.gov.au Detailed modelling has commenced to incorporate the new valuations into the Differential General Rates. Further information will be provided in due course. Please let me know if any further information is required.

Camping at the cemetery To the four teenagers who camped at the Beerburrum Cemetery on Friday, April 29.

Obviously you know who you are, and hopefully your parents know who you are as well.

I had the pleasure of cleaning up the vast array of food scraps and assorted rubbish you left behind.

Not only is this rubbish a danger to the health of wildlife, it desecrated the cemetery at which many of Beerburrum’s past residents including soldier settlers are buried.

If you live in Beerburrum, you should be ashamed of yourselves.

If you don’t live in Beerburrum, you are not welcome back.

Bye to Bob’s Butchery While it was great to see some new life being injected into Simpson Street with the grand opening of Beerwah’s new gym, Fitness Matters recently, the gloss was somewhat taken off by news of the closure of Bob’s Butchery. The iconic red and white shop will no doubt have a for lease sign in its front window before too long after decades of great ‘local’ service and support to the region.

It’s another reminder we need to ‘shop local’, so small businesses that put their necks out and offer continued support to our sporting groups, schools and wider community have a greater chance of survival during the quieter times.

Caloundra South Development As a resident of the Sunshine Coast I hereby voice my concerns regarding the proposed Caloundra South Development. The Urban Development Authority Plan devised for this area leaves many questions unanswered: Why are major transport issues not being assessed?

The four lane Bruce Highway from Caloundra to Caboolture already experiences frequent traffic standstills. My research reveals that currently the Sunshine Coast region averages 1.7 cars per household, and 70 per cent of its residents commute to work by private vehicle.

The proposed development is set to hold 20,000 dwellings, calculated to house 50,000 people, thus generating on average an additional 34,000 vehicles on main and local roads. The major traffic problems currently experienced by Caloundra West/Bellvista Boulevard will seem minor compared to the impact of Caloundra South.

Why and how can this development commence before the CAMCOS rail link is a reality?

Transport related social exclusion is a welldocumented problem within our society. I am sure the ULDA must be well aware of this fact.

Why does the ULDA have a ‘Vision’ and not ‘Signed Off’ agreements between the state government, the local government and the proposed developer, Stockland, in regard to the infrastructure and ongoing financial obligations this development will require?

Why are the rules on environment so loose?

The Pumicestone Passage, which is an intertidal area of Moreton Bay, will be subject to further upward pressure from this development. The passage is an important habitat for many threatened and vulnerable species of flora, fauna and marine life. The ecological balance is still struggling to recover from the short-sighted activities of the 60s and 70s in which the aerial spraying of pine plantations, poor farming practices and rapid population growth sent the Passage into rapid decline. Today the sea grass beds are regrowing, but there is still a long way to go in terms of water quality and the overall health of the passage eco-system.

I am very concerned about this development, including the short and long term effects that will result if it remains under the control of the ULDA. The Sunshine Coast Council is the best authority to work with the developer to ensure that Caloundra South does not become an environmental, social and financial burden on the ratepayers of the Sunshine Coast and the residents of Queensland as a whole.

Living Well

The Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation (DEEDI) some weeks ago released details of a funding grant available to farmers in the Pumicestone Catchment region to improve soil and nutrient management. Landholders within the catchment area have been invited to apply for funding grants of up to $6,000 or up to $10,000 for joint projects with neighbouring properties.

After torrential rain and flooding throughout December and January, the regions farms were put to the test with some losing crops and others bearing the scars of deep gouges caused by water run-off. The Pumicestone FarmFLOW project will work with rural landholders in the area to increase the adoption of land and water management practices to create more productive and sustainable landscapes.

Farms eligible for the DEEDI grant will be able to use the funds for the following projects.

- establishing grassed headlands and vegetated filter strips - converting to minimum tillage systems

- creating bulk poultry litter and manure storage areas - constructing off-stream banks and wetlands - redesigning drainage.

To be eligible for funding you must: - own or manage a rural property in the Pumicestone Catchment - be willing to match the proposed funds dollar for dollar through cash or in-kind contribution - be willing to participate in either a field day, training workshop, media release and/or case study - have, or be willing to develop, a property management plan - complete the project no later than February 2012.

For most farmers, the Pumicestone Catchment plays a vital role in the survival of their livelihood, so farmers have always had the interest of waterways at heart. This assistance offered by the Australian Government and DEEDI is another step towards Governments working with farmers to ensure their continued survival in the South East Queensland region.

Learn how to talk to your animals Next week, Heidi Wright from America will be visiting the Sunshine Coast talking to animals and getting real answers.

Heidi is an internationally known animal communicator and she’s an ex-police officer who now travels to many different countries to teach workshops and talk on television and radio about deepening the relationships between humans and animals.

The Glasshouse Country Anglicans put on a stylish garden party last Saturday for some very glamorous local ladies. With a clothing fashion parade by Eclectic Dreams of Landsborough, and a hat demonstration and parade with beautiful hats from Hatrageous Headwear of Beerwah.

They were fortunate to have local Elaine Mergard – former Milliner to the Governor General, Quentin Bryce – who was able to share stories and inspire the ladies on the day.

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship George Woodward Glasshouse Country Uniting Church I recently had an experience that made me think very deeply about what was really important in life. My parents are elderly and because of a set of circumstances associated with their health it became necessary for me to sell their home of over 20 years and buy a small unit in a retirement village. My parents had almost no involvement in the process. There was some pain and sadness associated with working out what we would need to take to the unit, what my siblings and I would keep and what we would give to charity. What did we do with the kit bag that my father came out of the army with 66 years ago? When I asked my dad about this particular item he just looked sad. It is still on the back seat of the car while I decide what to do with it.

In our culture the place where we live is often very important. Family members may have lived in a particular place or area for a long time, sometimes for more than one generation. The place then becomes important. The familiar place

where I visited my parents for over 20 years I can no longer go to. The things we have are often very important and often hold precious memories.

Some of my parent’s things we had to get rid of.

The things we do can easily define who we are.

When we meet someone new we often ask them, ‘what do you do?’

My parents can now do very little. One of the other things that often defines us is what we look like. My parents now look little like the young couple in the 66 year old photo of them on their wedding day.

This experience led me to the think; It is not the place we live; It is not what we have; It is not what we do; It is not what we look like; None of these are important. The important thing is WHO WE ARE. My parents have been good loving parents who still love each other deeply. It is the relationship that I share with these people that is important. We have just celebrated Easter and Easter reminds me that my relationship with God is central to all other relationships. My parents are the wonderful people who showed me that truth in how they lived their lives and in what they taught me.

Also on Saturday, Glasshouse travelled to Maleny to play the final of the Maleny Grove Live Life Village, 2011 Hinterland Challenge Competition.

Unfortunately, despite winning the preliminary four rounds (Glasshouse 20 points, Maleny 12 points and Mapleton 4 points) we ended up running second in the overall competition. Mapleton defeated Maleny in the semifinal on Saturday morning and then beat us 52 to 49 shots in the final in the afternoon.

The seniors back from the holiday break headed up to Gympie to take on last year’s premiers the Devils.

Reserve Grade down 24-4 at the break came out playing good footy in the 2nd half to go down 28-22 which will give them some confidence heading into next week.

The under 18’s also came close to getting their 2nd win of the year but just failing 30-28.

A Grade were paying some great footy and leading 12-6 at the break with some very solid defense the highlight. The boys came out after half time and stretched the lead to 18-6 when the game was stopped due to a lighting malfunction and was not started again.

A decision was to be made by the SCGRL on Monday on what was to happen with the result of this game.

We had a big weekend of soccer with 16 competitive games played plus small sided games played the ovals were busy.

The senior women’s teams kicked off the weekend with wins in both divisions with Daley Johnson having a blinder, scoring 5 goals in an 8-1 victory over Maleny. Our 1st division ladies also had a good win over Caloundra 3-0.

Our senior men’s teams played well, both going down. Both teams are showing great improvement and as the season progress are having better results.

Mooloolah River Waterwatch & Landcare Inc. We Care About Our Environment It’s nice to see the sun out again drying up the water-logged ground. The landslips at the headwaters of Hell Hole Creek are creating turbid muddy conditions in our river systems and threatening people’s land and houses.

Mooloolah River is silting up at a rapid rate which could cause greater flooding issues in the future. Mooloolah River Waterwatch & Landcare (MRWL) is currently working with various funding organisations to secure money to revegetate landslip areas and eroded banks along our waterways. Water Monitors Needed! We would love to set up water quality monitoring sites at the headwaters of the following creeks: Coochin, Coonowrin, Tibrogargan and Mellum Creeks. Green Army. Our Green Army team is still working hard on sites around Mooloolah cleaning up parks, waterways and planting trees. They are learning heaps about looking after our natural areas. Three of the team have now secured jobs.

Mooloolah Reveg Rescue Team. We have a team of five passionate reveg boys and they are available for a reasonable fee to help you in your garden, removing weeds and planting trees for you. They are trained in revegetation, maintenance and spraying.

Mooloolah Native Nursery. We have a wide variety of Sunshine Coast native plants at Mooloolah Native Nursery, which is part of Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare.

We grow most of our plants from local seed.

Come in and have a browse and a chat with our knowledgeable staff about what plants are best for your land/garden. Our stock is available from $2.00 each. Members are entitled to a 10 per cent discount on all plants.

Plant of the Month Diploglottis australis – Native Tamarind This lovely tree is found naturally in subtropical rainforest of Queensland and New South Wales, where it can reach 35m. In the home garden it will generally be a lot smaller, around 12m in height. It is a handsome tree with large leaves and interesting, edible fruit. The fruit has two to three lobed seed capsules with the seeds enclosed in an edible orange pulp, which is high in vitamin C. This tree is on special for the month of May at $1.50 per tube. Veterinary Assessment: ET was very thin and extremely weak, and much too young to be on his own. He had a bleeding tail and a blood test revealed ET to be quite anaemic.

Treatment: Dr Amber administered ET sub-cutaneous fluids and applied several heat packs to the tail end while he received a blood transfusion. ET was kept nice and warm during his overnight stay in the Nursery.

Future: ET is now with a registered wildlife carer and will return to the hospital for a check up in one week.

AZWH Statistic: We have already treated 14 echidnas so far this year at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital.

Rosemary’s plant of the month ‘Flaming Beauty’

Carphalea kirondron A very rare colourful shrub with large flower heads of brilliant red and white. It makes a wonderful specimen plant as it flowers for most of the year. Growing well in full sun or part shade to around 2m, all it needs is a prune back after flowering.

More funding to improve Sunshine Coast waterways Sunshine Coast landholders can further improve the viability of their properties and local waterways thanks to a new Queensland Government land management project. Senior Extension Officer Ian Layden from the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation (DEEDI) said the government’s FarmFLOW project has been extended to support landholders in the upper Mooloolah, North Maroochy and Kin Kin catchments, and the Maroochy canelands.

FarmFLOW helps producers to identify and implement practices that can result in significant fuel and fertiliser savings and production gains while reducing sediments and nutrients in waterways.

“As part of the FarmFLOW projects, the Maroochy Landcare Group has received $789,000 under the Australian Government’s Caring for our Country program,” Mr Layden said.

“This group has demonstrated a strong commitment to sustainable land practices locally, and the Queensland Government is pleased to partner with them.

“FarmFLOW will deliver support, incentives and training to landholders in partnership with local government, Natural Resource Management and traditional owner groups.

“Producers will learn how to improve their land management practices, repair and rehabilitate waterways and wetlands, and stabilise landslips.

“The goal is to empower landholders with increased knowledge and capacity in sustainable land management.

“This will lead to improved economic viability for local farms, as well as reduced impact on our waterways through less erosion and nutrient run off.”

Mr Layden said FarmFLOW has been running for the past three years across the Logan, Lockyer, Bremer and Pumicestone catchments, and landholders had reported real benefits.

“Producers can save money from these practices through reduced input costs, improved soil health and reduced machinery and fuel costs. There are also considerable benefits to water quality.”

“Training events and field days will be held across the Sunshine Coast to assist landholders implement new farming practices, including economic assessment tools, nutrient management and grazing land management techniques.”

FarmFLOW projects are a collaboration between the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation (DEEDI), Maroochy Landcare Group, Sunshine Coast Council and SEQ Catchments, supported by the Australian Government Caring for our Country program.
