Still in the balance are five seats, with the ABC predicting two will go to Labor and three to LNP. This prediction would give Labor 44 seats – one less than is needed to form government in their own right.

To complicate matters further, the result for the seat of Ferny Grove may be declared void. The Palmer United Party’s candidate has been found to be an undischarged bankrupt, leaving him invalid to run in the election, leaving the way open for a possible by-election.

Currently, the ABC are predicting the seat will go to Labor, but a by-election win by the LNP would even up the predicted totals – Labor 43, LNP 43.

Last week, Peter Wellington (pictured right) announced that, after careful consideration, his support will go to Labor to form a government.

In a letter to Labor leader Annastacia Palaszczuk, Mr Wellington guaranteed that he will ‘conditionally’ support a Labor government on confidence motions unless there is evidence of gross fraud, misappropriation or illegal activities; whilst reserving the right to vote any way he chooses on legislation introduced into Parliament in the best interests of his electorate and the state.

“The reason I confirmed my support before the final result of the election is known was to

provide stability and I believe Annastacia is the best person to do that,” Mr Wellington said.

Mr Wellington sought the position of both Labor and the LNP on a long list of issues including asset sales, integrity and accountability, electoral reform, the Crime and Corruption Commission, the public service, political donations, rights of Queenslanders, review of subcontractor payment laws, road maintenance contracts, Caloundra South infrastructure charges, Halls Creek, North Coast rail line, Nambour rail station, and Nambour hospital parking.

“While Lawrence Springborg was the official spokesperson for the LNP, there were three other leadership teams all vying for the job. The problem was while Newman is no more, the same people who were complicit in his government decisions are still there, it's just a shuffling of the chairs on the deck.”

The Katter’s Australia Party are still negotiating with the two major parties, and have yet to show who they will support.

Local political faces stay the same More than a week after the State election and Queensland remains uncertain as to who will form a stable government.

The situation across the Sunshine Coast, however is more definite … all sitting members have retained their seats.

Andrew Powell (Glass House, LNP), Mark McArdle (Caloundra, LNP), Jarrod Bleijie (Kawana, LNP), Steve Dickson (Buderim, LNP), Fiona Simpson (Maroochydore, LNP) and Glen Elmes (Noosa, LNP) were all returned but with a significant drop in popularity from their results in 2012.

Peter Wellington (Nicklin, Independent) was the only member locally to have increased his support with voters.

Council’s independence affirmed Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson has also waded into the current political debate.

from Beerburrum to Nambour is a high priority for Peter Wellington and this Council.

“I appreciate that Peter Wellington’s decision is based on achieving the greatest degree of stability in government,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“It’s not up to me to comment on the reasons why he has made that decision, nor can I speculate what may or may not have been discussed in his conversations with the major parties.

“If the ALP forms government with the support of Peter Wellington, I hope that he is able to bring a closer look at the priorities for the Sunshine Coast which I have made very clear to him.

“Naturally the North Coast Rail Line duplication

“I lead an independent Council and the advantage of that is that we can work with either party.

“Whatever the outcome – and I have made this very clear since the beginning of the election campaign – the Sunshine Coast Council stands ready to work with whoever is in government to achieve great outcomes for the Sunshine Coast.”

LNP choose leadership team Last Saturday morning, the LiberalNational Party MP’s met and decided who will lead the party after the election defeat of Campbell Newman and the resignation of Jeff Seeney as the Deputy Leader.

Mr Springborg served as the Health Minister in the recent government, with Mr Langbroek holding the education portfolio.

Mr Springborg thanked his LNP colleagues for having the confidence in Mr Langbroek and himself.

"We believe we have the right level of competence and experience to take our party forward in what are very interesting times in Queensland," he said.

"I think it's probably fair to say for those that have observed politics in Queensland over a long period of time, that nothing should really ever surprise us, with regards to those particular outcomes."

The MP’s elected Lawrence Springborg as the Leader and John-Paul Langbroek as the Deputy Leader.

Both have held the reigns of leadership previously, with Mr Springborg leading the Opposition into three election defeats in 2004, 2006 and 2009. Mr Langbroek was Leader in 2011 when Campbell Newman successfully made his bid to take over as Leader from outside the Parliament.

Change is in the air …

It’s no surprise our former Premier is out the door, and there’s now new prospects and possibilities for the State as a whole on the horizon.

‘Save the Sports Club’ gaining momentum

The Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club has been a part of the local community since the late 1920s. It was built from scratch by dedicated local farmers and families, and at some stage every adult and family has had some connection with the club, used the sports grounds, and been to an event or a function there.

With the downturn in the economy the club has fallen on hard times.

Club President Ken Fullerton said that they urgently need to raise funds to help pay off the bank loan on the Club House and amenities block at the sports ground.

“This will release the mortgage the bank has over the facility. Once this is achieved, we can then engage with the State Government and local council to organise funding each year to ensure the fields and facilities are available to the 1,200 plus sporting members of Touch Football, Cricket, Soccer and Netball,” he explained.

“This will also ensure the tennis court and grounds are still available to the public for use, and that the grounds are always available for the district schools for their sporting events.

“To date, the support the fundraising effort has received from the local community has been outstanding.

“With the donations and pledges received so far, it seems we're about half way to wiping out the $160,000 mortgage hanging over our heads, but we ask that people dig deep to ensure that we

can keep the Club alive,” he said.

Many local businesses have had an involvement in the Sports Club one way or another over the years, and Kel McNamara from KLM Energy Services believes it’s time to step up.

“Being a local business means that you should also be a respectable corporate citizen, which means that when a vital community organisation needs help, we should show our support. Not just for the Club, but because many of our local customers are also supported by the Sports Club and its facilities,” he said.

Ken said he understands that it can sometimes be daunting for a business to hand over a cheque without knowing if the final total will be reached.

“So we’re asking local businesses to register a donation pledge with us, with the money not needing to be handed over until we reach the required total.”

Kel supports this approach, so much so that he is pledging $5,000 from KLM. “I ask that all local businesses – from Elimbah to Mooloolah – to look at making a pledge of whatever amount they can.

“The Sports Club is too important for our wider community to let it fail and be lost as a community asset.”

Well if you have seen Glass House Mountains local Leo Petrie recently he is one of those who have been avoiding the hairdresser’s scissors and barber’s blades in preparation for the World’s Greatest Shave.

For the fourth year in a row, Leo is going under the clippers to help raise funds as part of the ‘World’s Greatest Shave’ and help beat blood cancers and support the vital work of the Leukaemia Foundation.

Leo is calling on other locals to join him and would like to form a ‘Glass House Shavers and Razors’ who will go under the clippers at Club Glasshouse on Sunday, March 15.

In 2010 Beerwah local Karen Staunton lost her mother-in-law to Leukaemia, and this year she has decided to Shave For A Cure in memory of her.

Karen has set herself a goal of raising $2,000 to help people fighting blood cancers and in memory of all people that have lost their battle.

As part of Karen’s fundraising efforts, she is looking for prize donations for a raffle, and is hoping that she can encourage other locals to help her out.

Rarely today does staff stay in the job for 25 years, but that is exactly what Sharon Schofield from Easton Lawyers, Maleny, has done.

“It may be a small business but it has worked for me. I am very lucky for the flexibility for me and my family,” says practice manager Sharon, mum of eight-year-old Kelly, and wife to Andrew.

Sharon finished her secondary education in 1989 and started her working career the following year.

“When I took on the job I was a junior, as a trainee, and was very quickly promoted to a senior,” said Sharon.

“Highlights over the years would definitely have to be some of the most amazing clients I have had, who have also become my friends.

“I really appreciate having great clients and appreciate what I do.”

New ‘Rev’ on the range

The ‘Good Neighbour Award’ for February was, for the first time, presented to an organisation, Glasshouse Country Care, at the meeting of Beerwah NHWQ held on February 3. It was nominated by Sylvia Shaw, who wrote…‘When I became quite ill at the beginning of the year, the wonderful people at Glasshouse Country Care came to my rescue. I cannot nominate a single person from those who answer the phone, drive me to hospital, doctors, the boys who raised my bed and lounge chair so I can get up, Nick for mowing and Denise with the mop. The Blackall Range Uniting Churches recently welcomed a new minister. Reverend Catherine Solomon was inducted at a service which filled the Maleny Uniting Church with people from the four congregations at Maleny, Montville, Palmwoods and Kenilworth attending, along with representatives from the Mary-Burnett Presbytery of the Uniting Church, representatives from other local churches and many of Catherine’s family and friends.

This is Catherine’s first appointment to parish ministry, having recently completed her ministry training at Trinity College in Brisbane.

Catherine, with architect husband Andrew Solomon, are living in Maleny. Previously, Catherine worked as a children and youth pastor in the Mogill Uniting Church.

Catherine’s interests include music, and both Catherine and Andrew are keen cyclists.

Catherine receiving a lei at the induction service from two representatives of the Tongan congregation at Palmwoods In commencing her ministry here on the range, Catherine is eager to identify the needs of the community and to look for ways that the church can help to meet these needs.

How good is it when you go to a country Show and you can wander through the pavilions, looking at all the weird and wonderful things that people have entered into the competitions?

It just wouldn’t be a real Show without the rows of fruit and vegetables lovingly grown, picked and displayed by local people.

And most of it comes from the average everyday backyard gardener … not from a professional farmer.

The Maleny Show is one such treasured institution, and you too can add to the magic of the Maleny Show by growing some sort of produce in your garden, on your balcony or in the school’s kitchen garden.

So, it’s time to get your veggie garden and fruit trees into shape if you want to grow champion produce for this year’s Maleny Show.

Each year there are lots and lots of different sections where the avid (or just adventurous) gardener can have a go.

From pumpkin to potato, chilli to cherry tomato, rhubarb to radish … there’s a class of fruit and vegetable to suit anyone.

Even the kids can get in on the act, with junior and school kitchen garden sections.

To start, have a read of Jade King’s monthly veggie gardening column on page 35 where she gives you some great advice on how to look after your soil. Then take a look at the classes in the produce section of last year’s Maleny Show to give you an idea of what to grow. At the Maleny Chamber of Commerce Christmas Carnival they organised a very successful fundraising raffle with all proceeds going to the Maleny Hospital towards purchasing a Spirometer.

Chamber Secretary, Karen Shaw said the community really supported this cause.

We raised $3020.00, which we handed over to the hospital last week, she said.

A spirometer is an apparatus for measuring the volume of air inspired and expired by the lungs, measuring the movement of air into and out of the lungs.

Nicole White, Director of Nursing (DON) at Maleny Hospital, had advised the chamber that they had wanted one for more than five years and the community’s fundraising was really appreciated.

You may have noticed the electronic signs on each side of the Tourist Information Centre on Bruce Parade at Glass House Mountains, advising of road works at night. The works are part of councils scheduled road maintenance program and not to do with the intersection.

A Sunshine Coast Council spokesperson said that as part of Sunshine Coast Council’s Road and Reseal Program, Reed Street, between Steve Irwin Way and Burgess Street, will be resurfaced from 6.00pm to 6.00am, February 10 and February 13.

“The works will involve removing existing surface; bitumen spray sealing; and full asphalt resurfacing,” said the spokesperson.

On those two nights, detours and traffic management will be in place for the safety of pedestrians and motorists.

Council are asking for people’s patience during construction.

Peachester CWA Contributed by Coral Beutel Four members of Peachester CWA branch travelled to the James Byrne Centre at Highfields, Toowoomba for the state CWA International weekend, where we learned about the English Midlands which is our country of study this year. What a great weekend, enjoyed by ladies from all over the state.

On Friday afternoon our first guest speaker spoke about living on a canal boat travelling the many canals and locks. Lots of good stories and photos. Next speaker was ACWW president Ruth Shanks, she spoke about the world conference which was held in India and about the Quarry she visited where women do all the hard work. For dinner we dressed in the flag colours of red and white.

On Saturday, after a lovely breakfast, the Glencoe Medieval display was enjoyed with talks and demonstrations. It is unbelievable how people lived.

There were two hours of craft lessons, followed by Clem Campbell QLD representative of the United Nations or UNAA speaking about his role.

Ruth Shanks and our state international officer spoke about the birthing and school kits etc. that we send overseas. Then we dressed up for the medieval dinner with a pig’s head adorning the main table in front of the Queensland state president Robyn McFarlen. The Morris dancers then invited some of Monks Maidens etc. to dance with them, it was hilarious.

Sunday morning our speakers were from ‘Day for girls’ program Toowoomba. These ladies make the necessary clothing for young girls who start menstruation and are not allowed to go to school after. They also teach them general hygiene. These girls (11, 12, and 13) are now considered child-bearing and are married off and sent to work in the fields. This is happening in a lot of countries, how lucky are we?

Peachester branch will be giving a donation to these ladies to help buy materials. Disposables are a no no!

Jeremy Green from Range Antiques then spoke about the beautiful china made in the midlands and had some on display. The weekend finished with the name decided for 2016 International weekend in January as ‘From Queensland to Greenland’. What a weekend with great food, entertainment, guest speakers and wonderful company. After that we are back to normal with our meetings on the first Thursday of each month.

Vivi and Lauren were also awarded the QUT Vice Chancellors Dean scholarship.

One member mentioned that in the United States, more people visited gardens than Las Vegas and Disneyland. A couple of members mentioned their experiences over the Christmas break visiting gardens.

It seems that ants are a serious problem for some members, and these are very hard to control without using some toxic chemicals.

A salute to my great grandfather

Frank Gowen bought and gave all his sons a block of land to farm. He also bought himself a block and moved to Glass Mountains, as it was called then. Sahara Farms and my farm were both given to his sons to farm. Without Frank there would be no Sahara Farms. Our ancestors have enabled us to lead a very bountiful life.

On August 21, 1917, five trustees from Glass Mountains were appointed to control the sports reserve.

Those appointed were Mr Frederick Lonergan, Mr Frank Gowen, Mr Robert Fullerton Snr, Mr George Markwell and Mr Hubert Eaton Kemp.

I would like to encourage other members of the Gowen family to give a donation to the sports club equaling if not bettering my donation of $10,500, in recognition of Frank Gowan’s commitment to the sports club and the Glass House community over many years.

I know my grandsons Sam and Jayden will want to use the club's facilities in the future and, Lucas James Morgan, wants to play soccer and he will be one of the sixth consecutive generations of the Gowen family to use these facilities and grounds since their inception. We do not want to see this change and look forward to a strong future for the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club.

The recent election results were a shock to Australia, not only Queensland. I believe that the Leader of the LNP got just what he deserved, with the campaign that he ran.

I am not surprised that our Prime Minister, Mr Abbott failed to come to Queensland to assist him.

My question to Queensland and Australia at large, though is why do we need or require State Government, surely two levels of government would be enough!

Without a third tier of government, just think how much money we could save in politician’s pensions? Where else in the world do politicians get full pensions after just nine years in Parliament?

I did over 33 years as a police officer in the State of NSW and I can tell you, I did not get offered ‘a full on you beaut’ pension.

I really don’t understand why we need state politicians? If anyone can tell me 10 things our Local ‘State’ Bloke has done for Glass House Mountains in the past six years, I'll shut up.

Passion and commitment are really important if citizens are to respond to the current and future needs of our country. Only when citizens are too self absorbed to be bothered with 'politics' can vested interests pursue their agenda to the detriment of us, the people.

My own experience as a party worker has most definitely been a positive one. I have found a spirit of helpfulness amongst the party workers, and the understanding that we are all there to do a job.

So to all my fellow foot soldiers, we are entitled to be happy with our role in the working of the democratic process. Cynicism achieves nothing.

Election comments

Campbell Newman shot himself in the foot, caused an upset. But it is not his fault by trying to rein in the horrible $85 billion deficit left by Anna Bligh’s government. It is the same with the federal government. It is the sound policy of the Labor systems to keep the state and Federal in deficit, this has been going on since 1901, the start of federation.

Now, Labor have a name tag they swear by, which is the ‘Red Deficits’. This is their tag, as the colour labor, always in the red, never in the black.

It is very sad that the state has to endure another deficit, as they have no agenda to change their policy of destruction.

Clive gets his way

While not being the only reason the LNP have had such a massive swing against them in this election, the fact that Clive Palmer has spent many millions on anti LNP advertising, not just since the election date was called, but going all the way back to when he fell out with the party because they refused his request for them to overrule council’s decision not allowing him to build a massive casino on the grounds of the Coolum resort. Might just have been enough to tip the balance towards the ALP more so then would have otherwise been the case. Just goes to show how spiteful he is.

No to Halls Creek

It is heartening to see that one of the main provisos that Peter Wellington has put on his support for a Labor government, is the removal of Hall's Creek from the urban planning agenda.

Hopefully reversals of other environmentally damaging decisions made by the outgoing government will follow, such as the Kondalilla Falls zip-line, Yaroomba high-rise resort, and the opening up of National Parks to commercial exploitation. Now that they will no longer be brow-beaten by Jeff Seeney, local members McArdle, Powell and Dixon may realise that people living on or visiting the Sunshine Coast are here to enjoy the environment in its natural state.

Politics in Queensland and Australia

I would like to make comment on the situation in politics in Queensland and in Australia overall.

I think Bill Hoffman’s column in Wednesday’s Sunshine Coast Daily hit the nail right on the head. People in Australia are sick and tired of the politicians of both parties in this country pandering to the big end of town and screwing over the little bloke time and time again.

Politicians are all running around at the moment promising to change and listen. How long will this last? A week, maybe two, until they are all comfortably ensconced back in their roles with snouts strategically back in the public trough, and we, the voting public will not matter a hoot again to them, until the next election when the shallow promises and smear campaigns are again rolled out. Yes it’s the system that we have, but it’s not the systems fault, it’s the fault of these selfserving individuals and political parties with their big spending political donors behind the scenes pulling the political strings for their own benefit.

So much for the ‘Commonwealth of Australia’.

In closing, can I ask those rusted on LNP and ALP supporters who continue to mindlessly follow and believe these parties (they drive around at election time and have the politician’s mug shots up in their yards and on their cars) to wake up; these political parties do not give a hoot about you. You are merely a tool and pawn to be used at their discretion.

A Tiger snake Notechis scutatus, photographed in the Coochin Creek Riparian Reserve is one of the only known populations for this species on the Sunshine Coast - it was found during the latest round of Environment Levy fauna surveys in council’s reserves.

The spectacular looking large venomous snake feeds mainly on frogs and can grow up to 1.2m in length and while common in other states, there are only three known populations of Tiger snake in Queensland.

Wild dogs I was recently contacted by a resident about wild dogs, so thought I’d also share an update about this more broadly here also for everyone to read.

Wild dogs are a serious issue and failure to control them can result in livestock losses, attacks on domestic pets, and the loss of native fauna.

Hinterland areas have the most wild dog sightings, however there has been a steady increase reported in the fringe between the urban and rural land (peri-urban land areas) throughout SEQ. Council is working with Biosecurity Queensland on a peri-urban wild dog research program to monitor, track and identify their dispersal patterns.

Council and Bio-security Queensland also help support local area community groups to undertake proactive wild dog baiting programs as landholders have a legislative responsibility to control declared pests on their land.

Council officers also provide assistance and advice to landowners about actions they should take to reduce the impact of wild dogs including ensuring pet dogs are contained and methods to keep livestock safe.

Residents are encouraged to report wild dog sightings, incidents or requests by visiting Council’s website or calling 5475 7272. Council will then investigate and action as appropriate.

Roadside litter is an ongoing problem and one my family and I try to reduce by regularly walking around our local area and collecting rubbish largely thrown from cars.

In the lead-up to Keep Australia Beautiful Day on March 1, I’d like to encourage other Division 1 residents to join the ‘picitup’ cause to keep our hinterland beautiful every day as well as keeping the plastic etc. out of our waterways and creek systems.

To help with picking up the litter, I am offering a limited supply of free long reach pick-up tongs and canvas ‘picitup’ envirobags to any interested residents willing to give it a go! Ideally you can collect them by coming to my ‘out and about session’ at Beerwah Marketplace between 9.30am to 11.30am on Friday, February 20.

Of course I will also be available to listen to any general suggestions or concerns about local issues. I will be located outside the IGA so why not drop by to let me know your thoughts and pick up a picitup kit?

Senior Moments Still sprightly and living independently at 100!

By Sonia Clark Last Tuesday, February 3, the staff of Glasshouse Country Care had a very special event planned to mark the 100th birthday of one of their well respected clients Mary Baker.

Mary incredibly still lives in her home in Beerwah and makes use of the independent living support packages from the not-for-profit organisation including visits to the facility two days a week for socialising, activities and entertainment.

With a massive birthday cake and special cards from the Prime Minister, Governor-General and the Queen, Mary was the centre of attention in the recreation hall packed with around 50 people marking this most meaningful of milestones.

A sprightly and engaging lady, Mary stood up and elegantly thanked everyone for their well wishes ahead of her actual birthday last Friday.

With a rousing rendition of ‘Mary’s a grand old name’ and ‘It’s a long way to Tipperary’, staff and clients sang along while Mary blew out her candles and cut the cake. Staff also presented her with a beautiful plant to mark the occasion.

When asked about her life and tips for longevity Mary reiterates just how fortunate she has been to have had a good life and loving friends, husband and family as well as a strong faith to lead her.

“And I never worry,” says Mary “what’s the good in that - it gets you nowhere!” she says with a

chuckle. Glasshouse Country Care manager Ann McQuay describes Mary as amazing.

“Just three years ago she travelled by herself to South Africa, taking a cruise to Cape Town, and she still lives independently!”

Mary celebrated her actual birthday last Friday with a party organised by her niece Shirley Jack with family and friends travelling from Melbourne and from around the world to mark the occasion.

Sunshine 60 and Better Group Inc. is a healthy ageing program providing a variety of fun activities to keep the mind and body active for older people. It is funded by the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disabilities Services.

The luckiest of adventures Lucky Watson has had some lucky escapes in his life but no one could say he has not lived.

The Beerwah Embracia resident, who was named after his family's change of fortune, devotedly served his country for a quarter of a century in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) but his life before and after service has been equally as interesting.

Lucky grew up in Sydney and had what could be described as an eventful childhood, often harnessing his boyish energy towards misguided activities.

"Lucky and his mates used to 'acquire' live rounds of ammunition from a nearby US air force base," said Pam, Lucky's wife.

"At school they would use the ammo to blow up ants nests, with one explosion injuring a boy's fingers.

"One of his experiments at home went a bit wrong and he blew a hole in the family's lounge room floor. His father contacted the police to come and tell him off!"

Raised with the belief that he could be or do anything, Lucky joined the RAAF as an apprentice radio technician (radar and electronics) at age 15, and was based at Frognall in Melbourne for training, before being transferred to Ballarat to begin his service.

Lucky said at the time: "We thought it was like

being released from prison when we went to Ballarat and that the reins were not quite so tight.

"No compulsory study, none of the extra duties we were rostered to do in the kitchen at Frognall, involving pot walloping and that sort of thing. It was like a holiday by comparison," he said.

During his RAAF career, Lucky served in Singapore from 1950 to 1956 as the RAAF operated against Malayan terrorists.

Other accomplishments include serving during the Vietnam War when Lucky flew with crew as a radar technician, and assisting flying troop replacements, supplies and evacuating the wounded. In 1969 Lucky was awarded the British Empire Medal for long service, good conduct and outstanding service.

After his illustrious 25 year career in the RAAF, Lucky requested a discharge to pursue other interests, including spending time with his two children from a previous marriage.

He relocated to Mackay and acquired a taxi licence and vehicle to support his family. He was eventually promoted to Director - Treasurer of Mackay City Cabs and then Chairman of Directors.

Lucky continued his association with taxis after relocating to Tewantin followed by Nambour, then owned two cabs and operated the Noosa Taxi Service.

"Lucky was the founding chairman of directors of the regional Suncoast Cabs Association in 1984 and later was re-elected to a second term," said Pam. "His contribution to the association was significant, with Lucky writing the Suncoast Cabs Association's constitution, as well as devising and producing the standing rules and operational procedures of the association in conjunction with the board of directors."

Lucky went on to work for Telstra for five years until retiring in 1990 at the age of 57. During their retirement Pam and Lucky enjoyed many adventures, laughs and some close calls with misadventure!

This included backpacking treks, motor bike riding, white water rafting, and campervan and rail trips through Asia, Europe, Britain, Russia and in Australia, crossing the Simpson Desert and the Canning Stock Route in their own trusty Toyota Troop Carrier.

"We have had our fair share of excitement and both loved travelling and talking to people wherever we happened to be," explains Pam.

New year, new resolutions

How to make real change in 2015 It’s a new year! Time for making all those great resolutions for the year that last approximately…two weeks! As a health practitioner, every week I see people who want to make positive changes, who need to make positive changes, but simply don’t. Or if they do start to make changes, it’s only until their pain or crisis subsides. Why do we do this to ourselves? Why don’t we make and sustain these positive changes we all know that we should?

It’s quite simple. Most of us live in a reactive world, rather than being proactive in our lives. It’s the same for our health, our relationships, our finances, etc. We only focus on improving when something bad happens that causes us to react.

I suggest making only one resolution this year, to be proactive, and to apply it to all areas of your life. If you don’t wake up each morning feeling great, healthy and happy, then start taking steps now towards that goal.

Don’t wait until you can hardly roll out of bed to then take positive actions towards your health. If you don’t have the most amazing relationships that fill your life with love and joy, start working on them now, before relationship stress takes over your life. If your finances aren’t as great as you’d like, make a plan to improve them and take the first step.

Current research is confirming what many of us heard from our elders and spiritual leaders; satisfaction comes with being engaged, doing good, and focusing on the present. Rather than setting goals that you’ll likely not put much effort into pursuing, choose to go with the flow of life and be proactive in all aspects; Health, Family / Relationships, Work, Finances, Recreation, and Mindset. With this approach, there is no ‘failing’ and no self-judgement – only doing and being better each day.

On Sunday, March 15 the Glasshouse Country Anglican community will celebrate a major milestone: 100 years since the church was first established in Beerwah. There will be a special service at the Mary MacKillop Centre, commencing at 10.00am (not the usual time of 9.00am) followed by a luncheon.

Records show that March 6, 1915 the small township of Beerwah celebrated with great enthusiasm the dedication of their new Church of England. .. The Brisbane Courier reported on March 13:

‘RELIGIOUS. On Saturday the Ven. H. Le Fanu (Archdeacon of Brisbane) dedicated the new church building at Beerwah to St. James.

Not only was the building packed to its utmost capacity, but many were compelled to remain outside. After the dedication service, which was fully choral, evensong was conducted by the vicar (the Rev. Cecil Smith), the musical part of the service being well rendered by a choir, largely augmented by church friends from Nambour. Mr Cheney officiated at the new church organ, which is his own gift to the church. Later in the afternoon a social gathering took place, when afternoon tea was

When the ‘fruiting’ season arrives for the 100 year old Bunya Pine trees it is a time of extreme caution. The nut cones weigh over six kilograms and fall from the very top canopy of the spiky Bunya trees. The oldest tree on the Bankfoot House property was planted in 1878 to celebrate the birth of twin girls, Clementina and Margaret, to parents William and Mary Grigor.

It is unwise to park cars or work in the garden directly under the trees during January / February. After two lean years, 2015 has been a bountiful season for the nuts. As the cones dry out the nut kernels are easily removed. These can be roasted or boiled to taste.

Bankfoot House Sign A new house sign was recently installed above the front verandah. The old sign was badly damaged by the summer sun and the plastic lettering was cracked or broken.

The new sign, exactly the size of the old one, has been made in metal and constructed by a visiting blacksmith – Australian made using methods sympathetic to the historic house.

New Interpretive and Archival Building Work is well advanced on the new building in the north-east corner of the Bankfoot property.

The new facility (with public toilets) will allow the volunteers to carry out their preservation work away from the heritage-listed house, as well as provide an archival store for historic photos, documents and other collection items. Current progress will see the building completed in March.

provided by the ladies of the congregation. The following day (Sunday) saw a great gathering of church people from the country districts round about, and the little church was found far too small for the assembled congregation.’

What a big event for a small community; and the congregation must have been doubly proud of the new building as it was all their own work. The land for the original site (east of the railway line) had been given by the Mawhinney family, timber for the building was donated, and after the stump capping in November 1914, the church was constructed at working bees with a volunteer labour force.

The building was later moved to the western side of the railway line to the site where it remained until sold for removal in 1997.

The Anglican community however has continued through many changes of clergy and congregation – and the name change to Anglican – and now worships at the Mary MacKillop Centre on Peachester Road, which they share with the local Catholic Church.

Looking forward to the celebration on Sunday, March 15, parishioners are contacting former clergy and district residents, hoping to welcome back many for the occasion.

Environment Levy Grants offer up to $5,000 funding to not-for-prot community based organisations for projects that make a positive and ongoing contribution to the region’s biodiversity and waterways.

Celebrating Soil!

2015 looks to be an exciting and productive year in the garden with it being the International Year of Soils! This is definitely one of my favourite subjects and often one of the most overlooked when it comes to productive gardening.

A healthy soil is one that is alive. I’m talking really alive … teeming with both plant and animal life, nutrient rich compost, sufficient water holding capacity and good porosity to enable it to breathe. Yes, ALIVE! All of these things combined make it virtually impossible for plants not to grow healthy and productively.

To achieve a healthy soil environment like this certainly takes time. You are in essence trying to build a population of many millions of microorganisms, and then on top of that, waiting for the new populations to reach equilibrium and work productively to breakdown organic matter and transform it into soluble nutrients.

In previous years I have spoken of the raised bed ‘lasagne layering’ garden as my preferred productive gardening set-up. It is this combination of ingredients, lucerne mulch, compost, lime/dolomite and blood and bone that creates a living soil.

Lucerne mulch provides organic matter that is quick to decompose, feeding microorganisms, and as this happens, a steady supply of available nitrogen is released. Plants grown in soils that are low in nitrogen will always grow slowly and appear to be a yellow/green instead of the usual healthy green.

Humates, which are moisture retaining organic particles, are also a product of lucerne decomposition and aids in maintaining optimal soil moisture.

Compost provides the life – bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes that chemically decompose organic matter. There are literally millions of these little guys in just a teaspoon of healthy soil! The more you have, the quicker the decomposition process, and hence, the quicker plants are supplied with readily available nutrients. Plants can grow without compost and simply be supplied with synthetic fertilisers instead; however the beneficial microbial populations can prevent outbreaks of pathogens and increase the overall immunity of the plant.

Lime and/or dolomite aid in providing an ideal pH environment for soil organisms and facilitate the decomposition process. Furthermore, it provides essential calcium and magnesium to the soil. A incorrect pH for a plant will prevent nutrients from becoming available to the plant regardless of whether they are in the soil matrix or not.

Blood and bone is a great quick way to maintain a food source for the soil organisms. It is also a good source of nitrogen that will assist with plant growth.

Finally, time is what is required to establish the physical decomposing macro-organisms such as worms, mites and millipedes. At this point, you will have the most productive soil teaming with life.

If you are finding that your plants are showing signs of poor growth, before just applying some fertiliser, consider ways you can ameliorate your soils.

You will be rewarded by bigger, healthier plants and a more sustainable nutrient supply within your patch. Until next time in Get Up and Grow!

The thing that surprised me was just how sparsely vegetated the city was. There were very few trees, but lots of rocks. Lots and lots and lots of rocks.

Olive trees seem to thrive there but not much else other than rocks.

Many years ago the only evidence of crucifixion was discovered. It was a bent nail through an ankle bone.

Scientists examined the bone and its nail intently so they could learn more about this horrible practice. They discovered that the nail had been nailed into an olive tree.

When we imagine the cross on which Jesus was crucified most of us think of a nice piece of milled timber that was straight and of some length. No such creature existed around Jerusalem in Jesus’ day. Even if it did, because wood was so scarce, it certainly would not have been wasted on a common criminal’s cross - it would have been used in the emperors palace or for somewhere important.

what was available to them - olive trees. And what scholars think happened is that the Romans nailed Jesus to the cross beam and then threw that cross beam between a couple of forks in the olive tree, and then nailed his feet to the trunk of that tree.

If that’s true then Jesus died while he literally hung on a tree.

In the Old testament God said cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.

Jesus was hung on a tree. And the idea was that when someone saw Jesus hanging on a tree they would immediately think of this verse and conclude that Jesus was cursed by God. That’s why the apostle Paul says that Jesus became a curse for us, by hanging on a tree.

As Jesus hung on that tree 2,000 years ago Jesus took the judgement and punishment (curse) we deserved so that we didn’t have to.

So next time you see a tree remember that Jesus died on a tree so that we might be set free from the curse of sin.

The Friday competition will start on Friday, February 20 and finishes in June. It is open to all ages and abilities, for coached or non-coached players. Matches are played at Glass House starting from 3.30pm. If you are interested in playing or would just like some information please ring Katya on 5494 9464 or 0417 625 194 or Jill on 5494 8218. For a 14 week season, the cost for the Continuous Tennis ‘A’ (the starters group), would be $40.00.

Strong start for season

Beerburrum Strongman Tim O'Shea had a strong start to the strongman season with a win in the ISF Strongman Triple Threat competition on the Gold Coast on Saturday.

To win the competition Tim had to duck walk (carry between the legs) a 182kg implement for 20m, overhead press a 105kg axle with tractor tyres multiple times and do a final medley of events including carrying a tractor bucket, several kegs and flipping a 300kg tyre five times.

Tim is fresh from a four month off season break after his silver medal at the powerlifting World Championships in Argentina last October, but now has a busy schedule including the powerlifting Queensland Championships next weekend in Brisbane.

Tim has also been fortunate to pick up another sponsor over the off season, with Sunshine Coast based Sports and Spinal Physiotherapy joining supplement company www.bulkpowders.com.au, and Muscle Hut gym in Kawana in supporting Tim is his strength sports endeavours.

Forty eight women battled the wet weather to compete in the two divisions. The triumphant winners were: Division 1: Winner - Andrea Campbell on a count back with 32pts and the runner-up was Lyn Wallace on a count back with 32pts.
