his year we have decided to have a new category in the Christmas Lights Competition for people’s choice so that it is not just the judges who have their say.

The idea of the how it works is that each of the entrants has an entry number and then you can go onto our new ‘Lighting Up Glasshouse Country’ facebook page and you can like your favourite/s.

We put in last week’s paper that we would have everything on facebook by last Friday, which sounded easy thinking between a few of us we would go out a on a couple of nights after dark and grab some snaps.

What we didn’t count of was having a quick crazy storm ripping through some of our townships last Thursday,

There will be a ‘Dive in Movie’ Night, with the cool family fun Christmas movie ‘Elf’ at the Mooloolah Pool, at the Mooloolah State School, 48 King Road. The night kicks off at 5.30pm and the movie starts at 6.30pm.

Tickets are $2.50 per person or $10.00 per family.

Remember to ring along your floating devices (there will be plenty of lifeguards on the night). Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

The Woodford Golf Club are hosting free Christmas Open Day from 2.00pm – 5.00pm.

Santa on a fire truck, there will be a free sausage sizzle, a sheep herding display, jumping castle, as well as golf croquet. Bring the family along and enjoy the fun of the day.

There will be Tapas on the Deck at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club, from 1.00pm – 4.00pm.

This is the first year Glasshouse Country Christian College has held a P-2 Carols

by Candlelight night and it was a great success. There was plenty of room on the oval for extended families and friends to join in the celebrations. The atmosphere was festive and the weather was perfect.

The P and F organised stalls, food and drinks so many families made a dinner picnic of the night. The P and F also gave a battery operated candle to each student which meant everyone could enjoy the traditional twinkling of candles in complete safety.

The program began with little voices singing ‘Unto us a Child is Born’ followed by each class presentation items. Interspersed between items, the end of year awards were presented. All of

Truth Wiggins from 1G sings her heart out during her performance the classes performed wonderfully and kept the audience of more than 500 people entertained all night. There were beautiful traditional songs such as ‘Joy to the World’ and ‘On that Very First Christmas’ as well as new twists on old songs like the ‘Australian Jingle Bells’ and a hip hop version of ‘Little Drummer Boy’.

When Prep Green performed ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree’ there were cries of delight to watch the little ones dance ‘the swim’ and ‘the twist’. The props for the ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’ by Year 2M were anything but traditional. Five gold rings were five Cheezels, a partridge in a pear tree became a picture of Danny Partridge on top of a pear t-shirt and the ‘swans a swimming’ became AFL Sydney Swans!

It was a wonderful way for the Prep to Year 2 classes and their families of Glasshouse Country to celebrate the end of a great year.

Council contributes to Community Carols event Church on the Rise has been awarded a $5,000 grant from Sunshine Coast Council's Major Community Grant in the Festive Season category.

The grant is for the Glasshouse Country Community Carols event that is held at the Beerwah Sports Ground on Saturday, December 14 from 5.00pm to 8.00pm.

The Planning Committee for the event consists of representatives from local churches and community groups – involving over 22 partners in the Carols planning and event co-ordination.

The event attracts around 3,000 attendees (and is growing each year) from the surrounding local communities of Mooloolah, Landsborough, Beerwah, Peachester, Glass House and Beerburrum.

The community is looking forward to what will be a great night for all the family.

Please note for those planning to attend the Community Carols, make sure you take the song book printed as the centre pages of this week’s GCNews with you on the night.

Vale William Charles (Bill) Ferris (1927-2013)

Sadly, the Friends of Bankfoot House lost a life member when Bill Ferris passed away on December 2, 2013. A funeral service was held for him on Tuesday, December 10 in Brisbane.

Bill was the eldest son of Jack Ferris, who was the last resident of Bankfoot House, as well as the grandson of William Smith and Clementina Burgess (nee Grigor).

President of the Friends of Bankfoot House, Ron Gillander said Bill had many precious memories of his grandparents at Bankfoot House and, upon the death of his mother Mary in 1987, assisted in supporting his father.

“Through Bill’s mechanical skills, his sharp memory and his comprehensive research into family history he also provided the Friends with vital information on Bankfoot House and the families.

“On many occasions when volunteers were stumped on a question about the history of the house, the plea was made ‘ask Bill’. When a mystery tool or rusty object was found in the old shed the first thought was ‘ask Bill’.

“Friends of Bankfoot House volunteers were very fortunate in having Bill available to them to answer the ‘ask Bill’ questions. He will be greatly missed.” Ron said.

Staff at the Beerwah library are expecting local children and parents are going to love their ‘Circus Circus Corner’ interactive Children’s spaces which will be set up on Monday and Tuesday 9.00am to 10.30am, on Wednesday from 9.00am to 12.00noon and Thursday and Friday from 3.00pm to 5.00pm until March 29.

These library corners are highly popular. The interactive children’s spaces featuring arts-based activities are based on the ‘learn through play philosophy’. They are designed to encourage curious and creative ideas, and are dedicated to under eights and their families.

The space offers children and parents the freedom to experiment and play with objects and ideas.

The ‘Corner’ will provide the opportunity for children to explore, create, think and invent.

In the ‘Corner’ children can build something familiar out of the unfamiliar or create something unexpected out of the expected.

A child’s brain is rapidly developing in the early years and creating a network of skills that are built on OUR throughout their lives. By the age of SEAFOOD IS five, a child has learnt most of the basic skills needed to survive.

Glenview company nets big fish in China

A Glenview-based company – RADAQUA – last week turned the first sod on a new aquaculture site in Fujian Province, China.

Real results with new techonology – Digital Foot Scanning

RADAQUA has developed a best-practice fish harvesting process which has the potential to supply a huge market in that seafood-loving nation.

When complete, this multi-million dollar development will see RADAQUA engineers operating a fly-in-fly-out style support team as the Zhao’an development flourishes.

RADAQUA Managing Director Rod Missen said a long journey was finally paying off for the company.

“The ultimate investment in China, through a staged development, will see an annual production of 5000 tonnes of Marine finfish, within a 16.6 hectare bio-secure site, with all nutrient and energy streams being fully utilised,” he said.

“Pristine, premium product delivered through an industry-leading production system will deliver the core outcomes of product quality, environment sustainability and economic viability of operations.”

Sunshine Coast Council is also working with RADAQUA in a bid to expand the technology to a larger site.

Cr Jenny McKay, who attended the groundbreaking event in China recently, said RADAQUA’s achievement was a great milestone.

“RADAQUA’s technology will revolutionise fish farming here in China,” she said.

“I know the company’s success will position it very well for further expansion in the area – and from there, potentially across the nation.”

The company has recognised a need for better food production systems to ensure we can keep up with the future demand for protein.

They have developed environmental and economically sustainable fish farming systems which deliver premium fish products through aquaculture, which then relieves the pressure on diminishing wild fish populations.

Other projects RADAQUA have been involved with include the establishment and operation of Ecofish at Glenview, working with Queensland Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry at their Bribie Island research centre, and setting up systems for the research into aquatic fisheries disease prevention with the South Australian government.

Rod says that another innovative project they have partnered with is called Blue Beef.

“This is an integrated fish and cattle farm, where the Rockhampton farmer has developed a large barramundi aquaculture farm.

“The waste and nutrient rich waters are then used to irrigate pastures where he grazes cattle,” explained Rod.

One new entrant at Mooloolah also has a very ‘cool Santa’ on a surfboard as a special feature which blends in well with the garden full of snowmen and reindeers.

However, the one street in Beerwah that has definitely embraced the festive season over the past few years is Pacific Place.

While the people who get seriously hooked on creating these amazing displays each year are all quite different – they are different ages, come from all walks of life and with varying budgets – they all seem to have a particular ‘enthusiasm gene’ that clearly unites them.

Some spend months researching and searching for unique intricate premade display pieces, and others spend the whole year search through the recycle centre and happily incorporate items that people have ‘gifted’ them and others like to get very hands on and build and create their own pieces from scratch.

So when you go out and take a look at the different properties you will notice there are all sorts of quirky elements that will appeal to different individuals. Personally I love the nativity scene in the stable that Rhonda and Kym Petty have create on Lindeman Road, right down to the details of the lambs and the calves (not so sure about the rabbit, but it is cute).

The Casey family of Pacific Place This year it is just as spectacular, with four of the houses entering the competition and one in the display listings. The passion for light displays runs deep in this street, so much so for Beth Casey and her family who moved into the street this year. Beth confirmed that part of the reason that they chose to rent in Pacific Place was for the Christmas lights. Beth and her family had previously been decorating their property in Chantilly Court for the past six years and as their family has expanded so has their light displays.

Last week baby Beth's youngest celebrated her first birthday and first full year of being a part of the Christmas light fun. Beth said she just loves how sharing this common interest really draws the neighbours together.

The team at the Lookout Cafe are really excited about the changes ahead for 2014, and expect that by Easter next year the building they operate from will be transformed.

Currently the cafe seats around 34 people on its outdoor deck area – however the major renovations will see them also having air conditioned indoor dining for an extra 20 people.

If you have been to the cafe you will know that the girls do an amazing job preparing the meals and drinks in a highly organised but challengingly small space.

The work will see their kitchen become three times the size that it currently is – which is great for those working in it and for the regulars, you can expect an expanded menu.

For the transition to take place they have to close for approximately a month, so they plan to keep trading right through the Christmas School Holidays and then close down over February.

They will however take a short Christmas break from Sunday, December 22 – Wednesday, December 25 and will reopen on Boxing Day. Gary and Levi from Studio Ink are helping get Kiana Myers to France to represent Australia in the Junior Women’s In-Line Hockey team in France in June / July in 2014.

Last year Kiana (who is ranked 22nd in the world for her division) travelled to California to compete in the World Championships and her team took out two bronze medals.

As part of Kiana’s fundraising she will be raffling the $500.00 voucher that the fellas have generously given her.

Tickets are $5.00 each or five for $20.00. To purchase a ticket, drop into Studio Ink in Simpson Street, Beerwah.

Gary said it was great to be able to support a talented young person on their way to being a champion.

Feed and Fodder at Beerwah are stocking the ‘Live Love Ride’ shirts that have been created in memory of little Jess Wall who sadly lost her battle with kidney disease back in 2012.

Jess’s mum Kelly has set the idea up as a fundraiser, purchasing the shirts for $30.00 then sells them for $35.00, with $5.00 being donated to the Kidney Foundation. (making no profit at all). The shirts are available in black, white, red and blue, as well as Jess’s favourite colours, pink and purple.

Community News Good Neighbour of the Year Award Contributed by Sheila Williams At the meeting of Beerwah NHWQ held on December 2, the ‘Good Neighbour of the Year’ Award was presented to John and Pam Innes, the recipients of the June award, who were nominated

by Esma and Jim Rigby.

Pam and John Innes have been involved in community affairs for many years since they retired to Beerwah. Pam was editor of the Glasshouse Country News, and as such, with John, became aware of the many needs in the community.

They have delivered Meals on Wheels, helped organise a plant stall at the Charity Sports Day and been involved with the local Glasshouse Country Orchid Society as well as the Peachester Horticultural Society.

They visit the sick and pick up those who have no transport to Church activities.

They have befriended the owners and the residents of Mooloolah Valley Lodge, and instigated twice yearly visits from the MU members and others

from the Anglican Church to have fellowship and afternoon tea with them.

Pam has been a long time member of the Anglican Debutante Ball Committee and of the Chaplaincy Committee. John is always willing to help a neighbour with small electrical problems.

Beerwah’s generosity gets the thumbs up from staff at Ruth Fairfax House

On Friday, five boxes of donated stationery from Beerwah were delivered to CWA’s accommodation, Ruth Fairfax House, in Brisbane.

From here they will make their way, with the help of Rotary International, to a depot where they will join all of the other Kits for Kids boxes collected by the many CWA branches in Queensland.

Rotary will deliver them to under-resourced schools in Papua New Guinea, Fiji and Samoa in the New Year.

We would especially like to thank Landsborough Kindy for their contribution (thanks for sharing what you have with other kids) and the Beerwah Newsagency for assisting with the collection.

Peter Pan flies before Christmas

Mooloolah Valley locals Ray and Lucy Oldfield, are part of the Maleny Players production of Peter Pan where Peter actually flies.

Ray plays a pirate in Hook’s crew and Lucy is a squaw in Big Chief Sitting Duck’s tribe. Peter Pan is a show the whole family can enjoy where pirates, Indians, crocodiles and lost children abound.

Tickets for Peter Pan are available from Maleny Visitors Centre or online from www. malenyplayers.org/bookings.

Ticket prices are $20.00 for adults, $10.00 for students aged six and over and children five and under are free.

The show will be held at the Maleny Community Centre Saturday, December 14 at 7.30pm.

Opening night, Sunday, December 15 at 2.30pm – matinee, Saturday, December 21 at 2.30pm and 7.30pm and the final performance will be held on Sunday, December 22 at 2.30pm.

Doors open 45 minutes prior to the commencement of the performance. There will be space allocated at the front of the stage for children to be close to all the fun and action.

Recently the Beerwah Catholic Ladies Auxiliary celebrated the launch of a soup recipe book titled ‘The Soup Kitchen’, the proceeds of which will go to support the Beerwah High School Chaplaincy.

The occasion was an end of year community dinner where cheques were given to our local St Vincent de Paul and Rosie's Street Mission to support their work as well as the book launch for the Chaplaincy. The inspiration for this project came out of the now traditional soup luncheon event held midyear by the Ladies Auxiliary where each year there are enquiries about recipes.

The Soup Kitchen book is a response to those requests. The many and varied recipes come from the kitchens of this community and have been well and truly taste tested.

By Trevor McGurk At our recent meeting, our facilitator Paul informed us that Penguin Books will accept manuscripts of approximately 50,000 words, between the first and eighth of each month. If the stories are of interest to them, they will advise and edit.

Paul also advised that the program at Glasshouse Primary School ‘Children’s Introduction to Writing’ has been an interesting and challenging exercise.

Many children showed encouraging potential to become good writers. The majority of children favoured topics on horror and dinosaurs. We thank BWG volunteers for conducting this program.

David emphasised the merits and reasons why we write and to make our weekly chosen homework topic a priority, so that constructive feedback and honest evaluations can be advantageous to writers.

An enjoyable barbecue break-up party was hosted

by David and Jo for group members - thanks to them for their generous hospitality.

Our meetings go into recess from our last meeting date on December 12 and re-commence on January 24, at the meeting room at Beerwah Library.

New members are most welcome.

Our recently published children’s books – ‘Tales for Tots & Tweens’ are available for $10.00 each at the Beerwah Newsagency.

Mooloolah Valley Lions has reformed

The club has reformed and are looking for new members and all interested people.

The Mooloolah Valley Lions originally formed / chartered in 1991 with 39 men and women.

Unfortunately due to many circumstances it was disbanded in 2005-6.

After renewed community interest in having a local service club, the District hierarchy have re-established the club again and now we meet on the first and third Tuesday each month.

The Mooloolah Valley Lions Club, with the help of Kenny's of Mooloolah opening specially, the club recharted on Tuesday, November 19.

Mens Only Meditation

Craig from The Healthy Guru and Steve from Hinterland Boxing Club have joined forces and are offering a ‘Mens Only Meditation’ class which is held weekly at the Boxing Club in Mawhinney Street, Beerwah.

The class is run on a Tuesday night from 7.00pm.

The last one for the year will be on December 18 and they will then take a break for the holidays and restart again on January 21.

Quilt winner

The Beerwah Catholic Ladies Auxiliary is very happy to announce the winner of the raffle of a beautiful handmade patchwork quilt donated

by Sharon Hyde. The winner is Ingrid O'Shea of Glass House. The proceeds of the raffle went to our local St Vincent de Paul and Rosie's Street Mission operating out of Caloundra. Anzacs - Celebrating 100 Years Landsborough Museum was delighted to receive access to a wonderful collection of letters and photos from Gwen Davis (nee Hapgood).

Harry Hapgood hailed from Mooloolah and served in Palestine during WW1. Harrys’ collection will be one feature of an exhibition that Landsborough Museum will install to celebrate and commemorate the ANZAC tradition.

If you have similar images, letters or other items that you would like to include in the exhibition, the Museum can digitally scan the items and return all originals to you. All items should be relevant to the Sunshine Coast.

Caloundra Family History

Guest speaker at the last general meeting of the Caloundra Family History Research group for 2013 was Ms Stephanie Ryan. As Senior Librarian from the State Library of Queensland, and specialising in Family History, Stephanie gave a spirited and informative talk on the SLQ resources. Her talk will inspire members to search in a variety of different ways to find their ancestors and their way of life both before emigrating, and since their arrival in Queensland. It also incorporated hints on the use of the facilities at SLQ, both on-line, and at South Brisbane.

This will be particularly useful to researchers over the Christmas break, as Caloundra Family History is closed during December.

After the presentation, afternoon tea began, made magnificent by the beautiful home-made cakes and sweets provided by members who obviously possess talents other than record and cemetery searches to find long departed family.

While enjoying the Christmas fare, a pall of sadness hung in the air, as our group of 112 members still has not been able to secure

LSS swim success

School News Landsborough’s got talent This term, Landsborough State School has held their annual Landsborough's Got Talent contest.

Students nominated to participate in the event and the heats were held during lunchtimes. The Grand Final was held on Friday, November 29 in the school hall to a large and enthusiastic audience.

There was a wide variety of acts including singing, dancing, playing musical instruments and card tricks. Lots of hidden talents were discovered.

Thank you to the teachers who gave up their time to judge the acts and congratulations to the winners. It was a fantastic event, loved by all the audience.

On Thursday, December 5, Mooloolah State School swim carnival was held at the Mooloolah Pool, their first carnival under the new Cowan Taylor Aquatics management.

It was a brilliant blue-sky day and temperatures soared. Teachers and volunteers rallied to every task, students from Prep to Year 7 participated

in true sporting spirit, records were broken and Westaway won the day!

Swim squad swimmers proved that training definitely pays off, and starred in most events.

Congratulations to all winners and swimmers, and a big thank-you to all who assisted to make the day a big sporting success!

Landsborough State School held their annual Swimming Carnival at the Beerwah Aquatic Centre on Tuesday, December 3.

A beautiful Summer's day set the scene for a fierce competition between the school's three sports houses - Burgess, Flinders and Petrie. The day included novelty events for the junior school as well as individual competitive stroke races for the upper year levels.

If children were not swimming in events, they were enthusiastically cheering on their friends.

Many parents also came along to support their children and enjoy the day.

One of the highlights of the day was having the school's mascot ‘Bee’ in attendance to motivate and entertain the students.

He donned a special bee coloured wetsuit for the day and even entered the pool a few times to cool down. The winning team was Burgess.

Well done to everyone who attended, gave it a go, earned points for their team and made the day such a success.

Hospitals praised

A couple of months ago I had cause to be taken by ambulance to Caloundra hospital after a fall on the tennis court. The care and attention given to me by the paramedics and staff in the Emergency Section to treat my injuries was first class.

As further treatment was required at Nambour hospital the doctor at Caloundra organised this for me. After meeting with the specialist he made an appointment for me with a surgeon and I attended the Caloundra Private Hospital to have an operation two days later.

As too many people are quick to criticise our overworked doctors and staff, I have no complaints and wish to praise them for the care and treatment I received during my time I spent in their care. I am now on the road to recovery.

Scary maths

Unfortunately, the climate debate goes on and on and on. I think that a relatively new study from the UK has thrown up three numbers with the potential to blow the debate to pieces; that is the debate is over. The numbers are 2,565 and 2,795 (Professor Bill McKibben) The number two is about the only thing that all the countries that attended the 2009 Copenhagen climate summit could agree on. In the voluntary accord signed by 141 countries responsible for 87.24% of the world’s carbon emissions, only one scientific number was included; it recognised the scientific view that the increase in global temperature should be below 2 degrees Celsius. While keeping this number in mind, we should also recognise that so far the temperature of the planet has already risen by 0.8 degrees.

The second number is 565 gigatons. This is roughly how much more carbon dioxide scientists say humans can pour into the atmosphere by midcentury (2050) and still have some reasonable hope of staying below the two degrees temperature rise. At the current rate we burn up carbon, the 565 gigatons will be used up in about 15 years.

While the above combination of two and 565 scares me, it’s the third number that makes it even scarier; 2,795 gigatons. This is the amount of carbon contained in all the coal, oil, and gas reserves held by fossil fuel companies and countries. This is five times higher than the 565 gigatons which would bring our temperature up to the 2 degree limit agreed to.

So if we already have five times as much oil and gas as science says it is safe to burn, why then are companies and governments still trying to open up new exploration licenses for even more of the same, at the same time as they are digging up more and more fossil fuel?

Surely, this should be all the evidence needed to start pouring huge amounts of money into the research and development of renewable energy sources, and quickly!

Rubbish at charity bins

You had a two page article in last weeks’ GCNews (pages 6 and 7) on the cost of dealing with rubbish and my letter is in that same rubbish vein.

I was very distressed by what I saw yesterday afternoon when I went to pick up my partner from the Glass House train station. I spotted old and decaying furnishings that had been left at the Charity bins. I was really seriously upset to see this.

Really, how could people do this?

I have a son who is in residential care; I know how much a place like Endeavour needs to collect financially to maintain the services given to these people with disabilities. And here are what can only be called very inconsiderate people literally dumping their household rubbish for someone else to dispose of.

As it is left at the foot of these bins, I get the impression that this rubbish is meant for those less fortunate?

Obviously, even the homeless would not want to sit on some of this stuff. Does this mean that those who are disabled and cannot even if they wanted to need to be accepting this as a gift?

It is high time that someone puts a CCTV camera on a pole near these bins, so we can arrest and fine these litter bugs who simply dump rubbish at everyone else’s expense.

If people are honest and want to donate things to charity, then it should be clean and usable.

Items that they do not think is good enough for themselves; should not be considered to be good enough for those less fortunate. That is really an insult. Then, when it is good enough, the charity will be more than happy to come and collect it from their homes, rather than having to pick up rubbish exposed to the weather.

Maybe council can consider re-introducing the curbside clean up?

After reading about the roosters, chook shed farms and kookaburras in the last couple of issues of this newspaper, I would like to say if you don't like where you live then why live here?

I can't believe people are complaining about these trivial little things. Take a look around at where you live. We live in one of the most beautiful places in Australia.

I would rather live here with the noise of roosters crowing, kookaburras laughing, peacocks calling, frogs croaking in our drain pipes and the stench of fertiliser at all hours of the day and night (as we do from our next door neighbors farm), than to live in a place like where we used to. With fire trucks and police screaming down our street, cars blazing on fire behind our neighbour's house, gun armed hold ups at the top of our street and knife punch ups in the alley way next to our house smashing through our fence.

I am thankful everyday for where we live now.

How about we all stop and look around at what we have and where we are - in a beautiful friendly community with beautiful wildlife, animals and creatures. Be thankful for that, some people can't afford to live in such a beautiful place.

Don't get hung up on the small things look at the bigger picture of life.

Good grief I thought I had heard it all. Where I have lived, for the past 24 years, I have a quarry (with regular dynamite explosions), nut and pineapple farms, chicken farms, greyhounds, trail bikes in the forest, off road rally's, helicopters, the Bruce Highway to the east and the trains to the west and all the sounds of nature including my own roosters and ducks.

I have one comment, this is the country and rural, you either get used to it or leave.

I have witnessed a lot of near misses to cars nearly backing into each other in car parks, and I myself am guilty. I backed into a delivery van, the damage was to my car not his and it was my fault. Why don’t we start beeping our horns three times when we are going to back out? People will look up and everyone around your car will then know what you are doing especially if you are beside a large car.

I read with interest the correspondence on the offensive smells which emanates from the chook farm in Glass House Mountains occasionally.

I wonder if anyone has been to Rotorua where the sulphur stink permeates the town continuously? Somehow the residents manage to live with it. Not sure what they do. Maybe they put pegs on their noses.

How sad it is to read that some people, ‘don’t care how chooks are farmed. Thank goodness there are a lot of us who do care about bad treatment meted out to dumb animals. Thanks Kerry!

User pays myth

Oh dear - I know that at this time of year, you really only want 'good cheer', but we now have our local councillor on about 'user pays'.

Firstly, I think most of the genuine cost complaints are about green waste. I agree that commercial users should pay the full cost.

Locals should get at least a discount, or free weekend drops for green waste (as it used to be).

The last load I took, I was going to be charged for a small (normal) load when the lady changed her mind and suddenly it was an 'average load' $16.00.

Now, user pays? Fair enough, when are you going to reduce my rates? I don't use council buses, taxi service, trains, bicycle paths, doggy parks, children’s parks etc. I do know that as a pensioner who thought I could end my days on this beautiful block, I cannot afford $16.00 every three to four weeks.

User pays is just a myth!

I would just like to say that I love hearing my neighbour's rooster at whatever hour he calls out.

It reminds me of how grateful I feel to live in a place where I hear this instead of sirens, traffic or even worse noises that people in war-torn countries hear.

My neighbour's rooster sounds like he is happy and enjoying life and that is a welcome start to my day.

I believe you can tune yourself to listen out for noises and be annoyed by them or you can choose to think of other things and before long your subconscious doesn't even hear it.

In the big picture we are more than lucky to live in a place where roosters are the worst thing we can complain about.

Upgrading / updating

Here are some tips that might save some time and heartache! Whether you're about to update your Windows 8 pc to 8.1 or your iPad to IOS 7, follow these steps before you dive in.

Firstly, backup any precious data: photographs, emails, documents etc. The updating / upgrading process is usually quite straight forward and painless, however, things can go wrong and you could be left with a big mess!

Once you have backed up on iTunes, a USB, Hard Drive, the Cloud, or wherever you back up to, take the next steps. Make sure your device is plugged into the power; you don’t want the battery to go flat halfway through!

Ensure your device is hooked up to the internet, and a good stable connection is highly recommended! Close any apps or programs that you have open.

Now you’re ready. With the IOS upgrade it’s pretty straight forward, however, if you have little available memory left, you will now be told you need 3.8 Gb free. If so, you’ll have to start tidying up, and maybe deleting a few apps.

You can re-install these apps after the process, but be warned, any data associated with that app may be lost.

With the Windows 8.1 update, you need to go through the App Store, so you need a Microsoft account. For a detailed step-by-step guide, go to the Microsoft Website (find a link at www.mooloolahpc.com.au). Finally, if your PC is running fine, and you don’t need potential drama, leave the Windows Update for a few more months while all the bugs get ironed out.

Apple is not totally immune to mishaps either!

My iPhone is still on the old IOS and very happy. I notice the update is up to 7.04 – I’ll give the experts a few more months yet.

Consistency is King Does your business have a Core Marketing Message? Unless you know exactly who you are and what you can offer, then how can your potential customers be expected to understand exactly what they can gain from your products and services?

A good business will have a Core Marketing Message that is short and to the point, and is consistent across all marketing materials, such as flyers, business cards, packaging, website, social media etc.

There is no point having a particular slogan, motto, mascot or symbol in your advertising if you do not also feature the same on your packaging, shopfront etc... otherwise how are people expected to remember that the advertisement they saw is actually related to the product or service they are considering?

A classic example was Duracell batteries versus Eveready batteries. Duracell had trademarked the pink 'Duracell Bunny' but once they let their trademark expire, Eveready Batteries swooped in and took it from them. What happened when Eveready began to advertise the 'Eveready Bunny'? It was Duracell sales that increased! It wasn’t until Eveready finally put the bunny imagery on their packaging that their own sales finally started to climb as a product of their advertising efforts.

An effective Core Marketing Message will: Show why and how you are uniquely placed in your industry as a quality provider; Touch people’s heartstrings and make them feel the benefits that are to be gained from dealing with your business; Put your potential customers’ minds at ease by calming their 'buyer's nerves' and reversing any risks that they may be considering.

TIME POOR? A good Social Media strategy can take 15 minutes per week.

And better still, there’s $$ no ongoing costs! $$ HIGH. Fires can be controlled but loss of life and damage to property is still a threat. What to do – ensure that you, your family and property are prepared for the risk of bushfire. Monitor the situation for any changes.

An improving economic environment and the deamalgamation with Noosa means that the New Year is a genuine re-start for our region. In council our challenge is to continue to leverage off the necessity to reorganise ourselves; which we are doing. Post GFC, finance and funding will remain difficult, so it’s important that Council and the community think and act creatively to create important new job opportunities, while developing a sustainable economic, social and environmental foundation for a much happier 2014 onwards. I attended the Landsborough Museum’s Cheese and Wine night for the launch of the latest display panels and their new Museum Interactive Data Access System (MIDAS). Council resealed and refurbished the back mudbrick walls of the museum that were starting to deteriorate from damp, in time for the launch. Three new themed panels have been installed that present aspects of early settlement, cultural heritage and the social history of the area and the new data system gives visitors a way of browsing the large collection of artefacts and articles that the museum preserves and presents on behalf of the whole community. Congratulations to all the volunteers who go to great lengths to preserve and present the history of our region using conventional as well as these newer and innovative platforms.

What was also brilliant about the evening was the attendance of Mayor Mark Jamieson, Mal Brough MP, Mark McArdle MP and Anne Bailey from the Museum and Gallery Services Qld – it’s great to see Landsborough and our museum spend a night in the spotlight.

It’s been a big year of consultation with the community about how the future design and development of the Coast will be reflected in the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme. Council has spent thousands of hours considering all of the submissions made by the community and the plan has now been sent to the State Government for final endorsement. Council expects to have the plan back early in the new year and we will be able to start implementing the scheme thereafter. It’s a vital document for the future of our region and I’d really like to thank all of those community members who have been involved in the process.

Thanks to everyone who came along to the Eudlo information session about the bridge replacement work that’s about to get underway. It was really enjoyable catching up with locals and hearing about what’s happening in the local area. There’s certainly a lot of interest in what will happen at the Old Olsen Mill site and that’s a project that I will be following up on and getting underway in the new year.

Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Is it a Rat or Yellow-footed Antechinus!

Friends and neighbours have often commented to me that they have a mouse or rat in their home, and, as in a recent case, one even came to me to borrow a rat trap. I only realised what the ‘rat’ was when told that it was in a cupboard and had left a pile of poo or droppings in one corner.

This is typical behaviour of the Yellow-footed Antechinus or Antechinus flavipes. In other words they can be very tidy creatures! Antechinus are marsupial mice, not rodents, and in size are between a rat and a mouse. The droppings are much larger than those of a mouse and do not have a characteristic ‘rodent’ smell.

They have rather flat heads, pointy noses and rather rusty brown coloured bodies. Apparently Photo courtesy of Alan one toe is missing a nail if you can get close enough to observe. I have often observed their characteristic jerky movement as they scurry across the floor. They love to nest in clothes or linen cupboards where they can produce eight or more young which attempt to suckle from teats in an immature pouch. The young are carried around on the back of the female for some time. Sounds totally exhausting doesn’t it! However, perhaps it is worse for the male who spends up to two weeks in a frenzy of mating with as many females as possible and then dies of exhaustion. A short but happy life!

Antechinus are wonderful predators making a meal of cockroaches, insects and even mice.

Koalas on the Sunshine Coast

Once plentiful and now hard to find, 80% of koala habitat in Australia has already disappeared. Habitat loss and fragmentation is the greatest threat facing koalas today and this increases the koala’s vulnerability to bush fires, domestic dog attacks and being hit on the roads.

Sensitive urban design should be provided to support wildlife to move freely throughout the environment. Koalas, along with kangaroos, are recognised as an Australian tourism icon enhancing the need for their protection.

Each individual koala has a number of habitat trees (usually old growth with forks), which are called the ‘Home Range Trees’ and are usually up to 43ha in area. These trees provide shelter and food throughout the koala’s life. Koalas can tell whether a tree ‘belongs’ to another koala or not, it would be like us walking into someone else’s home. These home trees however overlap so social interaction can occur between families. Removal of these trees can cause the koala family to lose both its food and shelter as it cannot simply move next door into another koala family’s home. Even after a koala has died, other koalas won’t move into the ‘empty’ home range for about a year, which is the time it takes for the scent markings and scratches of the old owner to disappear.

Koalas like a variety of different Eucalypts. Koalas sniff the leaves to detect toxin levels before eating. It is crucial to plant trees in suitable soils with the right amount of drainage. If a tree is growing in a less than ideal location it will suffer moisture and nutrient stress, and produce chemicals (terpenes, phenols) that discourage koalas from eating them.

Of concern is the Steve Irwin Way / Caloundra Road Interchange that will wipe out 24ha plus of koala habitat, endangered frog habitat and a number of large 300-year-old trees. We have an alternative design for the interchange to go ahead that will protect all of the above, but Main Roads will not listen.

They have stated they are not interested.

With Christmas just around the corner how would you like to have a rare living fossil in your lounge room, patio or backyard? A plant whose ancestors would have seen the passing of the dinosaurs and the formation of our Great Southern land. Fossil records show the Daintree Pine has been around approximately 50 million years since the time of Gondwana.

Today it is found in only a handful of small sites in the World Heritage listed Daintree National Park of FNQ. The Daintree Pine is not actually a pine at all but a primitive member of the Casuarina family. The female flowers are red to pink and they are followed by fruits resembling Casuarina cones. It is a very attractive bushy plant which maintains a lovely conical shape that provides great habitat for small nesting birds.

This is Australia’s answer to a Christmas tree and it grows beautifully here in SE QLD. It grows approximately 3 to 6m high x 2m wide and prefers full sun to semi shade in a well drained situation. It makes a wonderful pot specimen for many years.

They don’t get Christmas presents on Christmas day. They have to wait. They have to wait until the Wise men turn up on January 6.

In Majorca, the Procession of the Three Kings is a huge day. The kings arrive by boat on their camels and donkeys and, with the help of their servants, visit the houses of children bringing them presents and toys. Tens of thousands of people turn up to meet them.

But still it would be hard to wait those 11 days and even then the Wise men don’t come until late afternoon!

Waiting is never easy.

Surprisingly the Advent was originally about waiting. The Christmas term Advent comes from the Latin word for ‘coming.’ The purpose of the season was to look toward the coming of Christ to earth; it was a season that focused on waiting.

As early as the fourth century A.D., Christians fasted during this season and ended their fasts with celebrations either of the arrival of the Wise men or of the baptism of Jesus.

Trouble is we have never liked waiting - and so today we have replaced the waiting for Jesus with Celebrating, and that in turn has degenerated

into the buying and getting stuff. Our present celebration of the greatest event in world history has been rewritten so marketers can move products off the shelves.

Advent is about waiting, and waiting contributes little to the gross domestic. Yet waiting is a characteristic of God’s people. In the Old days they were waiting for their messiah’s coming.

Today we wait for the Messiah’s return. Christians are people who wait.

My hope for me and for you this Christmas is that sometime in the business that life brings we will find time to wait and find Jesus - the reason for the season.

Saturday, December 7 – our Awards Luncheon and Presentation was held at Club Glass House. After a very enjoyable buffet banquet the awards won during the year in Club Championships were presented. This was a most enjoyable time of good friendship and bowlers all coming together for this special occasion.

Contributed by Judy Walker On Tuesday we had the final of Consistency which was won by Eileen Pierce over Rosemay Roderick. A very good game girls. Social game won by Chris Mellon, Ian Henderson and Judy Walker. Members draw Ede Clark not present. Friday winners were Lloyd Walker and Nev Shaw, 2nd James Sammon and Horst Jonscher and 3rd. Rosemay Roderick, Eric Wood and Rob Hall.

Saturday was our Christmas lunch and a great day was had by all. On Friday we discovered the Club had been broken into and a great mess left behind. Nothing like being kicked when you are down.

Landsborough Loggers Cricket Club

Contributed by Dean Stainsby A Grade – played their first game against CooroyEumundi under lights at the Landsborough Sports Club on Tunnel Ridge Road. It was always going to be a tough contest coming up against a very good side who batted first and put an imposing score of all out for 229.

Landsborough’s innings finished at all out for 128.

Despite the result, the match was hailed as a great success due to approval from the SCCA to allow Day/ Night games to be played at the Landsborough Sports club.

Landsborough becomes only the second club on the

Sunshine Coast to gain this approval, and will seek to hold more Day/Night games as the season progresses.

Landsborough face Yandina at home next Saturday.

C Grade – travelled to Cooroy to face Cooroy-Eumundi in a very important match. With both teams needing a victory to keep themselves in contention for the One Day final, it was always going to be a close contest.

Landsborough captain Nathan Schulze won the toss and elected to bat in very warm conditions. The decision proved to be a good one as Landsborough piled on 228 runs after their 40 overs. Perennial run scorer Matthew Norton made an impressive 91, whilst Josh Quinn and Stephen Hocking pitched in with cameos of 32 and 29 respectively.

Cooroy-Eumundi got off to a shaky start when their opening batsman was run-out off the fielding of Matthew Norton. Ben Haycroft took a splendid catch off the bowling of David Carter to have the hosts reeling at 2 for not many. Cooroy-Eumundi’s opening batsman Andrew Bowden threatened to take the game away from Landsborough, making an impressive 150, before being run-out by Dean Stainsby. Unfortunately for Cooroy, he did not have enough support at the other end as the Loggers managed to get Cooroy all out for 206.

Matthew Norton took 4 wickets to go with his 91 runs in a Man of the Match display.

The C Grade face Yandina away next Saturday.

Owner Gary Gray brings a wealth of experience to Studio Ink having previously owned Shades of Gray in Caboolture from 1999 until 2011.

As an artistic kid who always enjoyed drawing, Gary initially started his apprenticeship on the Sunshine Coast. He then moved into setting up his own studio and has now returned to the Sunshine Coast with Studio Ink in Beerwah open for just over two years.

Tattoo artist Levi Bell originally started as an apprentice at Gary’s Shades of Gray Studio and then moved on to become one of the leading tattooists in his field. He has been part of the Studio Ink crew for the last six months. Both Gary and Levi are national and international multi award winners.
