his week’s edition is once again jam-packed with something for everyone I hope!

When we were up at the show last weekend I got talking to the Steward in the Cookery area and she was telling me how sad it was that a long time cookery stalwart of our community had decided not to continue entering her cookery, sweets and preserves into the show.

Beerwah local Mrs Monica Smith is 92 and she has been entering her cooking into the Maleny Show for over 60 years, and in some years she has entered up to 40 items!

It got me thinking that if reality television had been around 50 years ago, Mrs Smith would probably have been able to teach those My Kitchen Rules contestants a thing or two.

So in this week’s edition we have included a story about our very own local ‘celebrity cook’ who is an inspiration to many other fabulous local cooks.

And for those of you who are inspired to enter something next year, you have 50 weeks to practice. Sadly for me, I have just checked, and there isn’t a category for my signature dish the chocolate crackle!

New interpretive centre named after pioneering woman The official opening of Sunshine Coast Council’s new, purpose-built interpretive and archival building, the Mary Grigor Centre, was today marked with a commemorative re-enactment of the history of the Centre’s namesake.

Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said the State heritage-listed Bankfoot House played a significant role in the history of not only the local community, but also the Sunshine Coast region and more generally, the stories of our pioneers.

“Today’s opening of the Mary Grigor Centre is very important as it is a fitting acknowledgement of Mary Grigor who, with her husband William, was the first resident of Bankfoot House,” Cr Baberowski said.

“Mary Grigor was a well-known mid-wife, and local women would often go to Bankfoot House to give birth with Mary in attendance. Men would also leave their wives with Mary Grigor when they went on to Gympie in the search for gold.

“The Mary Grigor Centre provides archival storage for the paper and textile collections from the house and property, work space for the Friends of Bankfoot House who have been conserving the collection, and visitor and interpretive spaces for the general community.

Take control of your diabetes By Lea Parkes Two years ago GC&M News brought you a story about Glass House Mountains local Peter Pratt who had been able to turn his long-term diagnosis as a Type 2 diabetic around, by changing his daily eating habits, and adopting a totally non-processed food diet.

Peter’s success and belief in his results inspired him to help others and to share his approach by establishing a formal program. He then delivered the program in a group setting to other Glasshouse Country and Hinterland locals.

Peter said that since the first program that he ran at Glass House Mountains late in 2013 he's helped hundreds of people, not just here, but around the country and the world, through his on-line program delivered via his website.

And during that time Peter has been working on evolving the delivery of the program so that while participants are making their lifestyle changes, they have their doctor’s involvement along the way.

“Before getting started, participants need to see their doctor for an assessment about whether they should go ahead, in the context of their individual pharmaceutical situation,” Peter said.

“The program now incorporates a simple on-line data collection component which the participant completes which includes a food diary, monitoring of weight, and blood sugar levels pre and post meals.

“This data gives the doctor the opportunity to look at what the patient has been doing and seeing the changes that have been made, and as required, change their medication,” Peter said.

Peter with his wife Joanne have been inspired by Joe Cross (centre) from the movie Fat Sick and Nearly Dead Peter explained that the data collection is also vital as there has never been scientific research undertaken that shows the effectiveness of this lifestyle approach. Of course without significant data, no research can be undertaken.

Peter’s passion for helping others hasn’t lessened at all over the past couple of years. Type 2 Diabetes is affecting our world on an epidemic scale, and he's become more determined to share his approach and increase people’s knowledge and skills so they can take personal responsibility for their future health.

He is about to start another free community program on June 21 which consists of 12 weekly sessions at 6.30pm each Sunday, SDA Church Hall at 27 Maleny Street, Landsborough (the venue has been donated for this free community program).

Peachester NBN tower information

Celebration of Books Maleny 2015

As reported in last week’s Glasshouse Country & Maleny News, NBN is holding a community information session at the Peachester Hall on June 16 from 3.00pm to 6.00pm resulting from their plans to construct a microwave broadband tower on Range Road, about 500m from the general store and about 100m from the nearest resident.

Book lovers are gearing up for the fourth ‘Celebration of Books, Maleny’ on July 3, 4, and 5.

The aim of the session is to provide local Peachester residents with the opportunity to see information on the NBN broadband network and to ask questions of the NBN representatives on-hand. There won’t be a general discussion forum.

To get the most out of the opportunity, you may wish to find out more about the microwave tower fixed wireless broadband system they are proposing for Peachester, as opposed to the faster and more reliable optic fibre cable system that others in Beerwah and the coast will have access to.

A good starting point is the NBN website – www.nbnco.com.au – where you can read about what they do and what their plans are. Unfortunately, it’s a little difficult finding anything specific about Peachester.

Maleny Towerless NBN group representative Jim Straker warns people that there is another side to the story and that they don’t just have to accept what NBN is offering.

“There are proven health, amenity and land valuation concerns with these towers, and the level of broadband service they give is second-rate compared to what the majority of Australians will be enjoying via optic fibre cable,” he said.

“We will be making information available to Peachester people at the same time and place at the Tuesday session at the Peachester Hall, so that locals can be informed and arm themselves with the facts before talking with the NBN representatives.”

Last Thursday, NBN were in Peachester using a large balloon to take aerial photos to test signal strengths.

There are events for young and old - the Sunday Morning Forum, the Big Book Club, films and children's activities.

A rare display of first editions of Australian literature will be on show in the Maleny library near the Obi Obi Creek.

On Friday afternoon, July 3, emerging and established authors are invited to ‘Meet the Publishers’, a workshop with two senior editors from University of Queensland Press.

On Saturday morning, children's author Gregg Dreise presents his book ‘Kookoo Kookaburra’ in an interactive workshop in the Maleny library. The ‘Book Swap Bush’ in Tesch Park will be available as well as a screening of Paddington in the Maleny Community Centre Hall at 2.00pm.

One of the biggest events of the weekend, the Big Book Club, will be held at the Maleny RSL Hall at 2.00pm on July 4. Book Clubs and readers will read Ian McEwan’s latest page turner – ‘The Children Act’ and discuss it with fellow book lovers. Bring your friends and questions for co-facilitators Graeme Page QC and organisational psychologist Sue Collaro as they lead the group through their reflections on this challenging book and the bigger questions it raises for our society.

On July 5 four award-winning Australian authors Kristina Olsson, Matt Condon, Frances Whiting and Ashley Hay will discuss creativity as it informs their writing at the Sunday Morning Forum in the Maleny Local readers Sheila Community Centre starting at 10.00am.

Maleny NBN angst grows Local Maleny residents are unsure what impacts the proposed NBN microwave tower in the heart of Maleny will have on their health, lifestyle and even property values.

NBN plan to build a new tower on the council works depot at the corner of Palm and Bean Streets – 100m from the hospital, 100m from a retirement village, 50m from houses and 5m from a public walkway.

At a recent protest at the site organised by the Maleny Towerless NBN group, over 50 people heard about the planned tower and some of the impacts it may create for locals.

A call was made for residents living in or around the streets / roads of Palm, Bean, Trail, Curlew, Lorikeet, Tamarind, Carinya, Cherry, Fairview, Flame, Majuba, Morven, Parkglen, Pinewood, Sunnyside, Wongabel, Wattle, Fig, Willow, Teak and North Maleny to join a concerned residents group formed for the area.

Jim Straker from the Maleny Towerless NBN group would like people living in the above streets to contact him to become better informed before it’s too late.

“There are genuine concerns about the tower location for residents, and we would like locals to learn what is being planned for their backyards,” said Jim. “Anyone living in the vicinity can contact me on 5494 3229 or zrowaste@sctelco.net.au,” he said

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News was contacted by a number of local residents who expressed their apprehension at the plans.

One was Marcelle Holdaway from Palm Street.

Marcelle, who has lived there for 17 years and holds a Masters in Environmental Science, has some concerns.

“I went to the last community information session at Maleny but found that there is a difference between the facts that NBN use and those that the community concern group raised,” she said.

“If there are question marks over some of the issues – such as health implications – I feel that the precautionary principle should be used rather than pushing ahead for corporate aims.

“I’m also concerned that the tower doesn’t meet the council guidelines for the location of a tower.

So why is NBN even wasting time, money and resources looking at this site when it most likely won’t pass the development application stage?”

Maleny Uniting Church Celebrates

Visitors from near and far will descend on the Maleny Uniting Church for a 25 year reunion on Saturday and Sunday, June 20 and 21.

It is 25 years since the construction of the current church on land adjacent to Erowal Blue Care. The Church was opened in January 1990, largely debt free due to the significant contribution of professionals and volunteers who donated much of their time free of charge.

The Reunion Committee is keen to be in contact with past members and in particular anyone who was involved in the building project.

The weekend also highlights the significant contribution of the pioneering Bryce family. It was Isabelle Bryce who gave the land where the Church now stands.

So if you are a past member, community person with an interest in the local community, or if you were involved in the original building project, you are most welcome to attend.

Events on Saturday include a 7.30am Men’s breakfast with Andrew Powell, Member for Glasshouse as guest speaker. Then at 2.00pm a Back to Maleny Uniting Church Afternoon Tea with live musical entertainment and memorabilia displays.

The celebrations continue on Sunday with a 9.45am Celebration Service, followed by a barbecue lunch. All welcome to attend.

A movie night will be held during Men’s Health Week on Friday, June 12 at Maleny Community Centre. The aim of the event is to raise awareness about the support there is for men in the local community.

The movie night will screen the recent coming-ofage film ‘Boyhood’ from 6.00pm with a barbecue beforehand from 5.00pm.

As part of the night, there will be brief presentations from the Maleny Men’s Group, the Maleny Men’s House and the newly formed Maleny Men’s Forum.

This will be one of the first introductions by the group to the community that aims to be a voice for men and boys and support their access to supports and services.

The Australian Men’s Health Week recently asked the question ‘Why is Australian male health so in need of attention? Why work on men's health?’

Our response is that the health status of males in most countries, including Australia, is generally poorer than that of females.

More males die at every stage through the course of life, more males have accidents, more males take their own lives, and more males suffer from lifestyle-related health conditions than females at the same age.

Meanwhile, men are less frequent visitors to general practitioners, and the perception is that they don't care about health, or that health services are not well prepared to interact with men effectively.

Cost to attend is by donation, no booking required.

Contributed by Ali Marks The children of Landsborough Community Kindergarten invited a group of residents from Blue Aged Care Caloundra to visit their kindy for a ‘sing-a-long’ followed by morning tea.

What a beautiful time was had for both the children and the 15 residents who accepted their invitation.

The children have been so involved in their Waltzing Matilda play, that they made each of their visitors a jumbuck (sheep) to take home.

The children also made and presented the residents with three painted stars to hang in their day room at their centre.

We sang Waltzing Matilda, Home among the Gum Trees and the children sang two of their favourite songs for the resident’s enjoyment.

And what a surprise when Elsie who is a sprightly 97 years young presented each of the children with a gift she had purchased herself!

Following morning tea of jam drops and pikelets, our special visitors enjoyed being shown around the grounds, and veggie garden.

Exactly one year ago, the 'Gardens for Wildlife' program was launched by Barung Landcare.

On the day of the launch, over 80 enthusiastic gardeners attended, and 47 of them signed up straight away, receiving a lovely sign for their front gate or fence, featuring a red-backed wren; a folder containing useful notes and information leaflets; 10 free tree guards; 10 wildlife-friendly plants and invitations to workshops, all for a once only fee of $30.00 (Barung Landcare Members $25.00).

The program's purpose is to give support to property owners who want to attract wildlife to smaller properties with under one hectare of native vegetation, hence not large enough to qualify for the 'Land for Wildlife' program.

Adventure is the best medicine Manager of the Amcal Pharmacy at Beerwah, Jonas Howard, is getting excited about tackling the upcoming Oxfam Trailwalker endurance event to be held in Brisbane from June 19 to 21.

In a bid to raise awareness and to fight global poverty, the event sees teams of four tackle a 100km course over a gruelling 48 hour period.

Funds raised will go towards support programs that help local communities overseas create their own sustainable solutions to poverty.

Over 350 teams are competing in the Brisbane challenge which starts at Mt Glorious and follows an adventurous trail through the D’Aguilar National Park through to the finish line at Mt Cootha.

Jonas will be competing in the event with his adventure buddy Craig Vaughan, who some readers may remember featured as cover stars in March 2012, when they competed together in the Kathmandu Adventure Series event.

Since meeting through their wives new mothers’ course in Beerwah that year, the men have become firm friends and have tackled a number of adventure races together.

This is Jonas’s first attempt at the Oxfam Trailwalker Challenge and along with Craig and two other friends, one from Glass House and one from Brisbane, the men are gearing up to tackle the challenge head-on. They’ve been training hard since earlier this year with practice mountain climbs and hikes to help raise their fitness levels.

With the moniker ‘Team Map’, the friends must start together, walk together and finish together – all within 48 hours to succeed at the challenge.

“I’m feeling excited but also nervous,” said Jonas.

“This is my first time attempting the 100km walk and so I’m a little nervous about being able to complete the track – hopefully without rolling an ankle!” he laughingly added.

As this is a charity event, all teams must commit to raise a minimum of $1,400.00 for Oxfam’s work around the world.

School News Teams pedalling for their Chappies

Contributed by Linda Whysall and Mike Turner On Saturday, May 23 teams of people from all over the Sunshine Coast converged on the Goodlife Centre in Buderim wearing all sorts of outfits from fancy dress to bike pants. Why, you ask? Well, these were people who were passionate about supporting their local school chaplain and prepared to put their bodies on the line – pedalling as far as they could on a Spin Bike!

Of the 25 teams who entered, three were from our region, representing the chaplaincies of the Landsborough Primary, Beerwah Primary and Beerwah High Schools.

It was an impressive sight… in each heat there were eight teams sprinting as fast as they could on Spin Bikes, changing riders when they were spent.

There were people cheering, music pumping and the huge counter was slowly but surely counting down from 30 minutes to 0! That was Spin off.

Thanks to all those who donated to our teams! We had school teachers, families, businesses, churches and community members get behind us sponsoring. Our state school chaplains rely on donations to keep their services going – particularly those in full time positions. Chaplains provide vital support to students, staff and their families.

Two competent riders Shannon (Shaz) and Jaiden (J-Dog) did some great tricks including backflips on their portable mini half pipe ramp.

Dave the MC talked to the students about how the choices we make today affect our future. Three points he made were, love, care and respect. Loving, caring and respecting other people no matter how old they are; how much money that have; or what their nationality or beliefs are.

All people deserve to be treated this way. There is no place in the world for bullies.

Reconciliation Week May 27 – June 3

The hands represent the Indigenous flag in shape and colour. They were placed in front of the school flag pole. The children wrote personal messages of forgiveness and how, as a country, we can move towards a positive future for All Australians.

Bingo at Beerwah Shopping Village!

It was hard to resist a sweet treat last Wednesday when the staff at the Maleny Credit Union set up a stall to raise funds for the Cancer Council outside their office in the Main Street of Maleny.

All goodies are home-baked by the staff and help to raise a couple of hundred dollars every year as part of the annual Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser.

Prevention equals less pain As the old saying goes, ‘prevention is better than cure’, or alternatively, ‘prevention is better than pain’. This is particularly accurate in the case of dental health.

The majority of dental pain can be prevented by attending regular dental examinations.

You Said It Re: Bowen Road

I was rather surprised to read some of the comments regarding this intersection. I drive that way a lot as we have family on Bowen Road and to me, despite the care I take, it always takes some navigating. There is traffic emerging back onto Bowen Road from the service station and Fruit Barn, traffic turning from the north and south, as well as traffic travelling through at supposedly 80kmph.

The whole area of Glass House and Beerwah is increasing with traffic with new housing developments, and increases in population, so these intersections need to be changed.

Lights at the Glass House entrance onto Steve Irwin way will be excellent and stop the back-up off traffic especially at school pick-up and drop off times. It will also mean we sometimes don't have to hold our breath as we drive out onto Steve Irwin way from Glass House. The cautious driver can sit there timidly for quite a while as the traffic builds up behind them. The comment about obeying the traffic rules is obviously made by someone that doesn't travel that way very often.

For those who use these intersections every day, they are becoming dangerous areas.

With lights at the Glass House entrance that will alleviate traffic build up and my suggestion is a roundabout at the Bowen Road entrance.

That will keep the flow of traffic going and also cause traffic travelling through on Steve Irwin way to slow down.

Too many lights on Steve Irwin way is going to make it a very slow drive - which it sometimes already is. I'm looking forward to Roys Road opening up and giving us all other options to get out onto the Bruce Highway. We appreciate the changes since moving out this way, and look forward to more.

What a year

This year’s Maleny Agricultural Show was the best year we have had since the early 90’s, with two days of excellent weather and, with many more locals living in Maleny and surrounding areas nowadays, the numbers through the gate were record crowds.

The success of an event this size is dependent on the hard work of many, and I want everyone to know just how much we appreciate their commitment to making sure the event went off without a hitch.

It was really good to see the entrant numbers across all areas of the Show were significantly up, which kept the stewards and their assistants busy.

Each year we are working to increase the involvement of our younger generation, and the work being done by Jessica Wild and her helpers with the Small Farmers Tent is bringing some really positive results.

The support from the local business community as usual was outstanding, with many new sponsors from outside of Maleny, coming on board for the first time.

During the days leading up to the Show we had between 25 and 30 volunteers each day and on the Sunday about 70 people turned up to lend a hand to return the grounds back to the usual set up.

All in all it was a great year and I would really like to thank all those involved in making it happen. In particular, the executive committee, 18

The Life Art Worldwide Gallery opened officially on February 8 and provided a contemporary gallery for local, Australian and international artists.

As our work commitments draw us to Brisbane more and more each week, we have closed the gallery space. The artists exhibiting in Beerwah will now be able to be seen at Life Art Worldwide venues throughout Brisbane.

In September, 2015 Life Art Worldwide Arts Expo will showcase at Lightspace in Fortitude Valley. This contemporary venue has been carefully selected for both events.

Life Art Worldwide Expo and the Brisbane Art Prize Exhibition will both open to the public at Lightspace from September 23 – 27 during Brisbane Festival.

When Australia's artists are supported and valued they thrive, creating work that enriches our lives and puts Australian culture on the map. One of the objectives of bringing Life Art Worldwide first to Beerwah and the Sunshine Coast, and now to Brisbane, is to elevate and enhance the practice of Australian artists by producing a cross fertilisation of ideas with artists from around the world within a contemporary marketplace.

We look forward to the next stage of the adventure for Life Art Worldwide and hope the appreciation of visual art continues to flourish in the Glasshouse Country region.

Kindness is appreciated

Recently GC&M News have featured letters on the subject of kindness which reminded me of the many occasions I have been on the receiving end of unexpected brushes with kindness from total strangers, and how it has made me feel.

It is lovely to live somewhere that when you are out at the local shopping centres that you can find someone who is happy to assist with lifting a heavy object into the car, or sharing their umbrella on a rainy day, having a friendly chat, or helping you reach that tricky item at the back of the supermarket shelf.

Recently my sister and I were driving out of the Woolies carpark, when a group of young people on skateboards and bikes called out to us.

We didn't know them, and were a bit nervous as to why they were yelling at us. One of them rode up beside the car, and said, "your back door is open! Shall I shut it for you?" They did so, and

rode off with a smile and a wave. And we were left to remind ourselves that it is never good to generalise, or prejudge people.

The day after the recent heavy rain I surveyed my creek and it was a mess and I had no idea where or how to start clearing it up. Then a neighbour came across the road and asked did we need a hand.

Bringing over a 4-wheel drive, and some chains, they winched two large wet logs out of the culvert. They returned with a chainsaw and then cut the logs into small lengths, neatly stacking them all in one area.

When I tried to thank them, they simply said, "Hey, that's okay. That's just one neighbour helping another!" I still have no words to express how very grateful I am.

There is a saying, ‘How beautiful a day can be when kindness touches it’. There are many in our local community that have touched my days and my life with beauty, kindness and hope. I thank you from the depths of my heart.

On January 6, 2015 a state election was called (that’s right that far back). Within hours of the announcement, roadside signs were popping up everywhere by all parties. My feelings towards these were around 95% of all of the election signs within five metres there was some kind of rubbish there, and all parties at the end of the snap election, there was rubbish left there after the signs were gone. I wonder the example this displays to all in the community?

What will it take?

Recently on a Saturday for the second time in as many weeks, I was nearly forced off the Peachester Range by a company 4WD going down the mountain and on the wrong side of the road. All these hinterland roads are a death trap, including Commissioners Flat Road. After the head on there a couple of months ago, they slowed down for about three weeks, now it is full on, as fast as they can go.

When are people going to learn respect for their fellow road users, and to leave in plenty of time to get from A to B? What is it going to take for people to wake up?

Grand Champion hangs up her apron

By Sonia Clark This year the Maleny Show’s ‘Grand Cooking Champion’, Mrs Monica Smith will be hanging up her apron at the top of her game as she retires from show cooking at the sprightly age of 92.

Long time Beerwah local, Monica has been entering her cooking in competitions since the 1950’s, and with 60 years of baking and cookery behind her, she certainly knows her show cooking.

Every year, Monica has entered between two to three pages of submissions in the cookery and jams and preserves sections, and according to show cooking steward Glennis Barber, “all her entries are of a very high quality.”

It’s not surprising then that Monica has won the perpetual cooking trophy (donated by Ian Aldred in memory of wife Beryle) nine years out of the previous 10, and most years Monica wins the most points overall.

In some years she has successfully entered over 40 separate items which is a feat of logistics in itself, and in the memory of the show stewards,

Monica has only missed one year of entry in the Maleny Show.

Growing up as a teenager in Beerwah, Monica also married and settled in the area and used the fresh eggs, milk and cream from her family farm to compliment her show entries. A couple of years ago, Monica was one of just two local ladies selected to have her recipe ‘the fruited supper cake’ included in prestigious ‘The Australian Blue Ribbon Cookbook’.

“Monica will be sadly missed as well as the amount of entries that she submits every year – she is just a beautiful lady who has a wonderful connection with the community,” said Glennis.

Congratulations to Monica for all her tireless effort and contributions to the show. It certainly is apparent that everyone who knows Monica wishes her all the very best in her future endeavours.

Gallery space officially opens

Locals and visitors have been enjoying the exhibitions of artwork on display at Vianta Cafe in Simpson Street, Beerwah over the past few months and last Friday night Cr Rick Baberowski officially opened ‘Vianta Arts’. The current Hinterland Alive exhibition includes the work of talented local artists Cathy Condon, Neville Field, Cholena Hughes, Heather Gall, Robyn Shaw, Leigh Camilleri, Christine Elcoate, Joanne Turner, Stephanie McLennan and Glenis Grey, and will be on display until June 31.

Acrylic paints workshop Due to popular demand, and many people being unable to attend the last session, on Wednesday, June 17 in the morning, Margaret Kirman will again be giving a demonstration of the use of Acrylic paints and mediums and the new Atelier Fast Flow range. ‘The Second Best Marigold Hotel’, the sequel, takes us back to Jaipur, India, a few years after a group of cashstrapped Brits have made their home in the less than salubrious Marigold Hotel. ‘Still Alice’ focuses on family relationships and Alice’s inventive coping strategies as the incurable disease takes its hold. Comic operetta comes to Maleny

Do you like your musicals a little bit saucy, a little bit cheeky and not too serious? Well then you had better get your tickets organised to see the Maleny Singers’ latest musical production, ‘La Belle Hélène’.

Over the last two weekends in June, Ancient Greece will come to life in the Maleny Community Centre, with the story of Helen, Queen of Sparta, reputedly the most beautiful woman in the world.

Her love affair with Paris, Prince of Troy, later leads to the Trojan War, when supposedly a thousand Greek ships were launched to both rescue Helen and avenge her abduction.

This operetta by French composer, Jacques Offenbach, is a funny, flirtatious version of ‘what might have happened’. Jealous goddesses, a deceived husband and scheming prophets all feature in a tongue-in-cheek romp, set to plenty of lively music.

Don’t miss this saucy send-up, accompanied by the Maleny Performing Arts Orchestra. Opening night is Saturday, June 20 at 6.30pm, followed by a matinee on Sunday, June 21 at 2.00pm. Australia’s biggest morning tea at Beerwah Beerwah Country Women’s Association will once again host Australia’s biggest morning tea to raise funds for cancer research. The event will be held in the garden at the Beerwah CWA on Thursday, June 18 from 10.00am until 12.00noon.

Two speakers will present on the day. Young cancer survivor, 21-year-old Erin Hickey will speak about her journey with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Also speaking will be Leanda from the Erin and Healthy Guru in Beerwah. It was an honour to attend the recent opening of the Mary Grigor Centre, a purpose-built archival storage and interpretive centre in the Glass House Mountains. The naming of the centre is a fitting acknowledgement of the first female resident of Bankfoot House, Mary Grigor, who was a well-known midwife who played a significant role in the in the lives of the local community. The addition of this centre to the broader Bankfoot House Heritage Precinct recognises its importance in the region’s rich history. I recommend a visit to council’s website where you can further explore the history of Bankfoot House.

Community Nature Conservation is a highly effective environmental program that promotes responsible use and protection of the natural environment.

The program involves community volunteers in saving and restoring natural areas in local communities. Maleny sewerage treatment plant finalist in prestigious awards

I’m pleased to hear that Unitywater’s $17 million project to upgrade Maleny Sewage Treatment Plant and establish its associated wetlands has achieved finalist status in this year’s United Nations World Environment Day Awards.

The upgraded plant uses a membrane bioreactor to treat effluent to a very high standard before sending it to an irrigated rainforest and wetlands in the Maleny Community Precinct to further disperse and remove nutrients.

The winners of the Awards will be announced in Melbourne on June 5.

Contributed by Trish Bradford It was a glorious day for the May meeting held in Gillian Davie's garden.

A number of members have been out and about lately, Rob Morris, Jeff Bodley, Jenny Welsteed and Trish Bradford visited the Caloundra Garden Club for their Friendship Day and birthday celebrations.

One of the organisers of the Nambour Garden Expo also spoke about the International Garden Expo to be held in Strathpine in October. It sounds like the Expo will be an exceptional event.

Coral Beutal visited the Bribie Island Garden Club for their Friendship Day and said that they had a very good bench display.

Our Friendship Day is coming up in July and preparations are well underway.

Nessie Pratten explained that she watered her citrus trees with Condy’s Crystals (potash) to improve the flavour of the fruit. Club members were not very complimentary to the culprit who stole some of her plants that she sells outside her gate, as all monies raised goes towards medical research.

Margaret Ferris demonstrated a High Power Frequency Shifting ultrasonic pest repeller to repel insects, rats and mice.

Results of the competition bench for April: 1st Coral Beutal - 18 points, 2nd Trish Bradford - 16 points Thank you very much to Gillian for allowing us to visit her garden. It is a fairly new garden with landscaping still in progress and it is filled mainly with native plants, some members were able to advise with ideas for improvements.

Mozzie Blocker is a selected form of a local tea tree that has high concentrations of citronella oil in its leaves. Big boost to local economy Glass House is enjoying one if it’s biggest economic boosts in years, thanks to the success of the new Glasshouse Country estate subdivision.

Released last November, 38 of the 43 lots in Stage 1 have already sold. A number of homes are already fully completed and being enjoyed by their new owners, while over 15 homes are in various stages of construction.

Activity is set to soar over the coming weeks as it welcomes even more new residents as they too start building their new homes.

With house and land packages averaging $450,000 this represents a total investment value in Glass House of almost $25M. Houses underway mean lots of tradies using local

shops for food coffee and other items.

Sport Beerwah Ladies Golf Club

Contributed by Sue Greentree On Thursday, June 4, 75 women played in three divisions for trophies donated by Nicole Purvis, First National and John Mellish. The competition was a Monthly Medal Stroke; 4th Round of the GQ Brooch and 1st round of the International Bowl. The worthy winners were: Division 1 Andrea Campbell with a 76 nett, runner-up was Fay Barry with a 77 nett and the Gross Winner was Sonia Kenway with an 89 off the stick.

Division 2 Winner was Lesley Eggleston with a 73 nett, the Runner-up was Helen Lewis with a 74 nett and the Gross Winner was Gail Gundry with a 95 off the stick.

Division 3 Winner was Margaret Goodger with a 71 nett, the Runner-up was Elizabeth Gemmellon a count back with a 75 nett and the Gross Winner was Carolyn Hale with a 105 off the stick.

The Putting competition was won by Andrea Campbell with 25 putts.

NTP’s were won by: Teresa Keast No 2; Carolyn Gamble No 5; Margaret Zonca No 16 and Carolyn Hale No 18. The Ball Rundown went to 78 nett.

The 1st and 2nd round of the Club Championships, sponsored by Halcyon and Club Super, will be held next week on Thursday and Friday, June 11 and 12. A separate competition will be held for those women not competing in the championships. The Committee will also hold their monthly meeting after the presentation.

Hope you have all paid your season fees, otherwise they need to be paid by Friday at the latest, as this helps to pay for the season court hire, tennis balls and other costs for the season.Matches for the finals will all be held at the Glasshouse Sports Club and all players need to be there by 3.30pm.

All players and families are welcome to come and support the players in the finals and enjoy the presentation and break-up afterwards, which will include some fun and games. Proposed finish time will be 7.00pm. Good luck to all the teams in the finals.

Some of the results from the semi-finals are below.

Division 1: Nadal defeated Murray and Djokovic defeated Federer. For the finals it will be Nadal v Djokovic. Division 2: Bryce defeated Ziggy and Riley defeated Declan. For the finals it will be Bryce v Riley.

Division 3: Peewee: Prince defeated Yonex and Head defeated Babolat.

For the finals match it will be Prince v Head. Continuous Tennis: In the semi-final knockout Emily defeated Josh and Isabel defeated Eadie. For the finals it will be Emily v Isabel. Players in Division 2 and Division 3 / Peewee will have to contact Katya for the finals matches.

Local Lion up against giants Local Mum, Evie Joy contacted GC&M News last week to let us know that her 19 year old son Jonah Licht, who attended Glasshouse Christian College during his school days, was asked to play for Brisbane Lions Reserves in Sydney against the Greater Western Giants last weekend. Currently Jonah plays for Redland Bay and the Brisbane Lions Academy had signed him up for the Queensland AFL team a couple weeks ago.

Strongman places 2nd

Beerburrum Strongman Tim O'Shea, 37, placed 2nd in Round Two of the Queensland Strongman Series in Brisbane last Sunday. This places him in second spot in the Queensland Strongman Series with two rounds to go.

During the competition on Sunday Tim had to press 120kg over his head multiple times, deadlift a car, carry kegs and sandbags, drag chains and lift 140kg Atlas Stones.

Tim said that he is very pleased with the result, and to move into second position overall in the series is great.

“Full credit to Dave Napper for a first place finish and confirming himself as the man to beat in the series at the moment," he said.

Round Three of the Queensland Strongman Series will be held at the Beerwah Charity Sports Day in August. With up to fifty entrants it will be a fantastic spectacle and as the local entrant, Tim would love your support.
