Hi Everyone

T

his week we have included our first Senior’s Moments feature for the year, as well as our Valentine’s Day feature. Sadly, I didn’t get a chance to include a story about Senior Romancing!

But I think the information supplied by CPAP Direct in their ad in the senior's feature about the ‘Risks associated with Snoring’ missed the opportunity to point out that snoring could have an impact on your romance – you would have to think that not snoring would make for a happier partner?

And I am sure that the Senior Romancing story would be a winner with quite a few readers - so I have popped that story idea on my list for a later edition.

I already have some interesting insights written up from a friend (who is only just a senior) who has tried out internet dating, so if anyone out there has any great tips for dating for the over 60s I would love to hear them. I am always happy to include them (with names changed – in case you are a little shy).

And remember Valentine’s Day isn’t just for the young, and if you’re not so young – it's probably even more important to remember when it is - next Sunday, February 14!!

Local News History captured in drawing Visitors to the Landsborough Pub would have recently noticed a new addition to the walls of the dining room.

Peachester Artist, Sally Joyce, has completed a drawing of the historic Landsborough Pub for Publican Terry Morrow.

The very detailed pencil drawing took Sally more than 35 hours to complete.

She explained with two young children that while she would love to work in ink, it doesn’t have the flexibility to cope with the number of interruptions during her day.

While Sally has used a little artistic licence, basically the drawing reflects how the pub looks

today, and Terry reckons it is better than he expected, and that he's as happy as Larry with it.

Sally said that hopefully the drawing captures a pub that obviously holds many stories since it was built in 1888.

"A drawing can often capture different things and more memories than a photo. It was an honour to draw such an old beauty.”

Visitors to the pub can enjoy the drawing as an addition to their dining experience.

The drawing came about after Sally’s father-in law, builder Frank Joyce made a timber frame “too beautiful for a menu board” and instead was destined to hold a drawing of the pub.

Playing as the Gundrum family; the actual episode was filmed at the beginning of December last year. However the family were sworn to secrecy about their outcome until the show aired last week.

Appearing on a national game show involves quite a lengthy process. Denise originally saw an advertisement calling for contestants nearly two years ago, and immediately applied. About eight months later she received an email asking if the family could meet producers at the Marriott Hotel in Brisbane for the initial selection process.

Given only two weeks’ notice to nominate a team that could travel to Brisbane was a challenge, as although the Gundrum’s are a large family – they are spread out mainly around regional Queensland and Victoria. Eventually a team was found that included Denise’s 90-year-mother who was able to travel up from the Gold Coast.

The producers loved the family (especially Grandma!) and they spent the day progressing through the selection process and then were sent home still unsure if they would make it to the filming stage.

Nearly six months later, Denise got the call that they had been selected to appear on the show and that they would be flown down to

By all accounts, the actual filming process was a hoot and all the cast and crew an absolute delight to deal with. Grant Denyer took a shine to Denise’s mum and they even did a waltz together.

Sadly they didn’t win on the evening so they just made the one appearance. However Grant thought this might have been a great thing as Grandma had said If we win the $10,000, I’m going to take everyone here to Kakadu for a holiday ... then I’ll leave them there!

Flora and fauna protected by council purchase A number of endangered and significant flora and fauna species contained within 80 hectares on two hinterland properties will now be protected and enhanced thanks to Sunshine Coast Council’s Environment Levy Land Acquisition Program.

Mayor Mark Jamieson last week announced council had acquired two new properties – MacDonalds Road, Bald Knob and Burgess Avenue, Maleny.

“We now have almost 3,000 hectares of environmentally significant land that has been purchased for conservation through the Environment Levy since it was introduced in the early 1990s,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“Around 20% (474 hectares) of that has been acquired in the last four years.

“Through the Environment Levy, council aims to maintain, and where possible improve, the biodiversity of our region. Protecting environmentally significant land and improving connectivity between habitat areas are part of that aim.

“Both of these strategic investments adjoin council protected reserves which gives us important buffering and expansion opportunities.

“By acquiring these properties, we can also build greater landscape connectivity to nearby vegetation.

“We have already identified numerous important and vulnerable plant and wildlife species on the newly acquired sites and our council officers are excited to undertake flora and fauna assessments to build our knowledge of how to best preserve and protect what we have here for future generations.

“That is what these purchases are all about – protecting our environment for our children, our grandchildren.”

Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said the $525,000 acquisition of the 63.5 hectare Bald Knob site would expand the London Creek Environmental Reserve to 204 hectares.

“The new Bald Knob site is partly located in the London Creek sub-catchment which is considered one of the most ecologically diverse areas in the Upper Stanley River catchment area,” Cr Baberowski said.

“Council is looking forward to working with the community to find out what plants and animal species are being sheltered in this significant remnant patch of bush which is fully vegetated, contains headwater creek systems and retains areas of mature eucalypt and rainforest communities that are a priority for conservation.

“This acquisition ensures council is able to provide 'intact natural environment' study experiences for generations to come. It also protects sufficient habitat to maintain breeding populations of native wildlife in the London Creek reserve system such as the koala and at least three different types of gliders known to live in

the area.

“The investment will also assist to protect water quality of London Creek that supports endangered and significant species including the giant barred frog and the large spiney crayfish.”

Environment Portfolio and Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay said the $970,000 acquisition of the 13.4 hectare Maleny site was a real coup for many reasons.

“Located on the north-western boundary of Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve (MCSR), the Maleny property purchase will assist to protect and expand the existing habitat of the much loved reserve, which attracts in excess of 200,000 visitors a year,” Cr McKay said.

“The new environment site will also ensure a number of habitat trees and patches of remnant vegetation are safeguarded through future rehabilitation and offsetting activities.

“There will also be opportunities to facilitate a range of complementary social and economic outcomes resulting from the investment.

“Future strategic planning will be undertaken to determine the compatible future uses for the site and associated management requirements.”

Zonta International is an organisation that promotes the rights of women at international, national and local levels. The motto of the organisation is ‘empowering women through service and advocacy’.

Over the decades, Zonta International has flourished into a global organisation of professional women committed to advancing the status of women. The club is represented in 67 countries across the world and has over 30,000 members (Zontians).

Our local club is the Zonta Club of Blackall Range which was originally chartered in 1997.

Members consist of executive or business women from a broad range of professional backgrounds, and currently the club has around 25 members who meet and instigate a variety of programs that benefit women.

A strong focus is to improve the lives of women by supporting women in need as well as assisting young women, one initiative they offer annually is a scholarship for a local female student.

Currently members meet on the third Tuesday of each month at various locations across the range.

Zonta International celebrates International Women’s Day annually with Zonta Rose Day. The Zonta Rose is a beautiful yellow rose that symbolises the joining of Zonta clubs around the world in friendship. Since 1999, on this special day, Zontians around the world are encouraged to raise awareness of the organisation by distributing yellow roses or items that bear the image of a yellow rose.

Contributed by Scott Fullerton from the memories of Ken Fullerton and John Winterhoff Following the recent passing of former Glass House Mountain’s local Graham Ryan, members of the local farming community paused to remember Graham and wanted to share a tribute for the input that he had into the local farming industry.

In 1961 Graham, his wife Lotti and their children Kaye and Martin moved from Landsborough to Glass House when they purchased the Mobil Service Station.

In those days it was located on the old Bruce Highway and was quite a busy service station.

Soon after, they expanded the business to include an engineering workshop known as Glasshouse Engineering.

Around that time, they also expanded their family to include Peter and Robyn.

Glass House farmer, Ken Fullerton said that over the years Graham built a lot of farm machinery for pineapple, tobacco and small crop farmers, including harvesters, spray booms and planters …not just for locals but also for farmers outside of the area at Redland Bay and on the Henzells Farm at Dayboro.

“Being renowned for building quality machinery and always being really particular with his work, Graham had a good reputation both near and far,” Ken remembered.

“Graham was instrumental in building bulk handling pineapple harvesters and in the mid-1960’s he and Bill Fullerton Snr designed the Fullerton Farms first 5 bin harvester which

was still in use until 2010. He definitely built high quality machinery that was made to last.

“Many local farmers in the area are grateful for his knowledge and the contribution he made to modernising the way they farmed their crops,” Ken said.

It wasn’t just the local farmers who he worked for. Graham also built and repaired machinery to the Main Roads Department, Queensland Railways and the Forestry Department.

He did a lot of maintenance / repairs to earth moving equipment for local businesses Howard Earthmoving, Moroney’s of Beerwah and the Australian Paper Mill. He also employed a lot of local lads as apprentices.

Graham’s other love was deep sea fishing which he had to travel out of the area for. One of his favourite spots was 1770, as well as Mooloolaba and off Caloundra.

So not surprisingly after his retirement, Graham and Lotti moved to Buddina, where he could spend more time on his passion of fishing.

He could launch his big boat not far from the house, he even built his own truck to carry his boat to make it easier to unload and load his boat instead of relying on a trailer!

The locals that he worked with over the years appreciated his knowledge and skills and would like to thank him for the work he did for them.

In our January 27 issue we ran a story about the Maleny Show Society attending the Queensland Show Conference. In a wonderful recognition of locally known young talent, Jessica Wild, won the inaugural ‘Outstanding Contribution by an Individual’ award. Many readers will also know Jessica from her work with the popular ‘Small Farmers Tent’ program at the show.

GC&M News caught up with Jess to find out more about her well-deserved win.

Jess has been heavily involved with the Maleny Show throughout her life and continues to be involved even after moving with her young family from Maleny to Charleville. She comes from a strong family tradition of involvement, with her family exhibiting, judging and volunteering at the Maleny Show since the 1940s.

“It wasn't really a choice so much as an expectation that all of us in the generations to follow would also get involved with the Maleny Show Society.

Most of my family is under the direction of Aunty Kay (Kayrene Corkin) in the Main Ring, helping with all the Equestrian Events and that's where I spent most of my time on Show Days as a kid,” explained Jess.

In recent years, Jess approached the Committee about starting a new activity, the Small Farmers Tent - and for the past three years she says she has been given a leave pass from the Main Ring to organise this activity instead. Luckily Jess has a very supportive family – especially as she now travels from Charleville back to Maleny to do it.

The concept of the Small Farmers Tent grew from Jess’s realisation that Maleny Show has been growing at a rapid rate and while many people attend the show – there is perhaps not as much interaction with local agricultural activities or even hands-on involvement with the Show as in previous years. Jess wanted to get back to basics and help people find out what makes 'good food', good. And she saw the perfect opportunity through the annual local celebration of community and agriculture.

With 'good food', food provenance and community all the rage, Jess is committed to building interest in three main areas - the farm gate, the Show gate and the home gate.

“I invite local farmers to come and introduce themselves...give us some information about what it is they farm, how they farm it, what issues and concerns they have, and their future outcomes.

“I also try to provide information on how to get involved with the Maleny Show and encourage people to kick start their own farming journey at home.

It might be by simply understanding more about the local agricultural scene, by learning what to do with locally farmed produce through one of our masterclasses, or by growing their own produce at home,” she said.

Jess has been thrilled with the popularity of the program and has loved seeing so many people interested in learning about the fun and enjoyment that farming and Showing can bring. She said it strengthens both the position of the local farmer and community as new connections are made, developing hands-on experience and wider knowledge bases.

“I'm very proud to represent the Maleny Show Society and in turn the Maleny Community, especially all the small farmers, and it's wonderful to receive recognition from QCAS that we're developing something special here at the Maleny Show,” said Jess.

It is not surprising that coming from a family with a long history of being involved in the community, 20-year-old Shae Geritz has decided it’s time to start putting back. So Shae has entered the Maleny Show Society’s Charity Person contest for 2016.

Shae is clearly very proud of her family ties to the area. She explained to me that her grandfather, a Maleny Dairy Farmer - Frank Geritz, was a life member of Maleny Apex and her grandmother Katherine Geritz was a girl guide leader, and that they were both heavily involved in the community.

And on her mum’s side of the family, her grandmother Pam McMaster has had a very long involvement with the Glasshouse Bowls Club.

This may be why she has decided to kick off her fundraising efforts at a Barefoot Bowls Day at Club Glasshouse on Saturday, February 20.

Shae is a former Glasshouse Mountains State School student, and you may also recognise her from Landsborough IGA where she has been employed for the past two years.

Shae says she enjoys working with all the staff, and she is pleased that the store owners Ashley and Casandra Grigor, are sponsoring her entry.

Her parents Scott and Leanne Geritz, and brothers Ty and Jesse, are all behind her efforts to raise funds that will go to the Maleny Show Society to ultimately be used for improvements at the showground.

Shae is currently busy looking for donations and sponsorship for the upcoming Barefoot Bowls Day and the Golf Day she is planning at the Maleny Golf Club on Sunday, April 10.

Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce update with Andrew Prescott I hope everyone had an enjoyable and safe Christmas and New Year break.

The Chamber has had a great start to the year with the completion of the CCTV project. Cameras are now installed and operational in Landsborough, Beerwah and Glass House.

This project presented quite a few challenges but with the hard work of a small number of people it has been completed and provides a great benefit to all three communities. It is quite amazing what can be achieved when people work together and everyone does their bit.

However projects like this take a lot of work, and so the more people we have involved, the lighter the load for all concerned.

We are currently involved in the development and initiation of a Small Business Awards in conjunction with several other local Chambers of Commerce and other business support groups in the Glass House Electorate.

There has been some information released about this recently and more will come to hand as work progresses. It promises to be a great way of recognising local businesses and employees,while having a bit of fun too.

As always, if you have any ideas about what you would like your Chamber to do, or become involved in, please let myself or one of the committee members know or contact us via the Facebook page or web site.

We are always available and looking for ways to provide service and value to our membership.

The beginning of the year is a great time to set goals and develop or revise our business plans, and review how things went in the past year. And for some of us it is a quieter time of the year and an excellent opportunity to think about how we can do things better. Making more use of our resources is a good way to start and your Chamber is a resource that can be utilised to help your business in a number of different ways.

Another film crew at Landsborough

By Lea Parkes Late in March you will be able to get the ‘inside story’ about well-known local twins Bridget and Paula Powers from Twinnies Seabird Rescue on Steve Irwin Way at Landsborough.

Their story will be featured on Channel Nine’s prime time current affairs program – ‘Inside Story’, hosted by journalist Leila McKinnon.

Each week they profile the courageous, the inspiring and the controversial remarkable Australians with extraordinary stories to tell.

Anyone who knows the girls won’t be surprised why their story would be chosen for the show.

The Twinnies mum Helen explained that the show was filmed over a few days showing the girls at work at the centre, as well as on the coast filming the releasing of a bird, and doing regular chores such as heading out to pick up food items for the birds at Woolies at the Beerwah Marketplace.

We caught up with the girls while they were casually filling their trolley while having a film crew capturing it all. The filming created a bit of interest from the locals doing their grocery shopping.

While most people continued to shop like it was an everyday occurrence, I did notice one couple who seemed to be having a bit of fun circuiting the filming area – let’s hope they end up in the footage that goes to air.

Kicking another goal on the Maleny Precinct with Maleny District Sport and Rec

Sunshine Coast Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay said she was excited to share the good news story with Sport and Rec Club’s Mike Norman today (Friday, February 5) to look at a portion of the club’s leased land area which will be freed up as open community recreation space.

“An opportunity was identified through the final design and construction of Parkland Drive that there was a great opportunity for additional public open space,” she said.

“As this land was part of the Sport and Rec Lease land, discussions were held with the club and the club strongly supported this minor amendment to their lease land.

“This also reflects the public feedback through the Master Planning process for Maleny District Sport and Rec. “I am looking forward to working with the clubs to construct seating etc on this land for the benefit of all. Congratulations Mike for his shared vision for the Precinct.”

Hair-raising challenge!

A hair-raising quest to find Queensland’s most extraordinarily brave community was launched recently.

Each year, the Leukaemia Foundation’s ‘World’s Greatest Shave’ sees thousands of Queenslander’s bravely shave, colour or wax – and this year it wants to know which city is a cut above the rest.

The Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland’s CEO, Bill Petch, said registration for the popular event on March 10-13 was now open and the race for the Sunshine Coast to be crowned bravest had begun.

“Chinville, the birthplace of the World’s Greatest Shave, has long been considered the most daring but I’m certain there are communities like the Sunshine Coast that can rival the bravery and charitable spirit of Chinville’s famed residents,” Mr Petch said.

“The city with the most residents signing up to World’s Greatest Shave will have the honour of becoming Chinville’s sister city, going down in history as the bravest community in the state.

“I urge everyone on the Sunshine Coast to look amongst their community of work colleagues,

Fairview open to the public monthly

By Sonia Clark Maleny’s Fairview is a wonderful historical house and valuable historical resource for the local area and is popular with local community groups and schools during educational visits and open days.

‘Friends of Pattemore House’ also proactively source documents, stories and photographs to support the cultural and heritage experience for visitors.

Previously open to the public only by appointment, Fairview will now be open on the last Saturday of the month from 2.00pm – 4.00pm, cost will be $5.00 for adults, and children under 12 free. The opening will give visitors the opportunity to explore the lives of the dairy farming families who built, lived and worked at 'Fairview' from 1907 - 1995 through displays, stories, photographs, early maps and surveying records.

You can also enjoy a stroll in their footsteps over to the property's Old Dairy Bails, taking in sweeping views of North Maleny on Maleny's Heritage Trail. Light refreshments are also available at ‘Fairview’ (which is also known as Pattemore House) a Queensland heritage listed property located at 15 Porters Lane, Maleny.

The property sits on about 2.5 hectares of land and is surrounded by established gardens,fruit trees and paddocks. Fairview was built in 1907 and is one of the oldest examples of an early twentieth century farmhouse still located on its original site.

The property is now owned and maintained by Sunshine Coast Council assisted by a dedicated community group called Friends of Pattemore House. Fairview represents an insight for visitors into the rich dairying history of the area as well as an excellent historical example of building of the time. There are only a very few houses of this type still existing in our local area.

The lowset house is made of white beech board that was cut, pit-sawn and dressed onsite for the original owners John and Emily Pattemore.

The style of building is rare and the inside of the house is quite extensive and still intact.

The house consists of four rooms surrounded by verandahs. The house block was originally fenced to keep the cattle out and beyond the fence line were other outbuildings including the dairy and machinery shed. John Pattemore ran the diary using share farming, and along with farmer Bill Dickson, they introduced the first Friesian dairy cattle into the Maleny area.

Maleny Hinterland community information sessions

The NBN is heading to the Maleny Hinterland to provide the local community with the information they need to take advantage of fixed wireless superfast broadband, ask any questions, or raise concerns about the proposed fixed wireless network.

The NBN already has 13 fixed wireless facilities delivering services to more than 2,700 homes and businesses across the Sunshine Coast Council area, and another three facilities are approved and awaiting completion.

Along with fixed wireless, the NBN is using a mix of technologies, including fixed line and satellite to deliver high speed broadband to Australians.

Under the minimum speeds that all technologies on the network is designed to provide, Queensland families can all be online at the same time, using multiple devices.

In keeping with previous commitments to Maleny Hinterland communities, NBN has not yet lodged a Development Application for these proposals.

These proposals are instead being brought forward to the community for pre-lodgement consultation, and to that end, a community information session for each proposal is being held.

Peachester CWA

Contributed by Coral Beutel Well 2016 has started for Peachester CWA with Jo, Margaret and Coral attending the International weekend at James Byrne Centre, Toowoomba starting on Friday, January 29.

The weekend was about Greenland our country of study this year. We started with the royal anthem and Greenland anthem. A power point of ‘Not so white Greenland’ showing Angelica widely used and other produce like seal meat, fish etc. was shown, then we listened to Heather Brennan of Bundaberg who is Treasurer of ACWW (Associated Country Women of the World) speak. An international doll display was held in the dining room covering two tables. At 6.30pm saw most ladies dressed in international costumes for the international dinner.

On Saturday a power point of the Northern Lights ‘Aurora Borealis’ was followed by a talk about tomatoes, the primary product for study, it was amazing. After morning tea, a gentleman showed and talked about leather work, whips and greenhide rope. We then did craft work, some making cards with polar bears and national flower ‘Little Girl’, others doing houses for table decorations. After lunch it was plants from arctic regions with Brian Sams and a talk about Eric the Red whose father was deported from Denmark. After afternoon tea, Tom Larsen spoke about life in Greenland and introduced us to Jenny and her beautiful Siberian Husky. Dinner dress was the colours of the Northern Lights and we were entertained by Danish dancers with some ladies joining in. Great fun!

On Sunday Christine King told us about ACWW conference in Toronto. We had morning tea and a talk about United Nations which ACWW works with. With the drawing of raffle, Nepal was introduced as next year’s country of study.

Allocation of profit from the weekend goes to mid wives in New Guinea.

The CWA song of peace was sung then Auld Lang Syne. What a wonderful weekend of learning with great food, and friendly company.

One hundred and twelve ladies from all over Queensland attended.

Home battery storage market is set to boom in 2016

by Ian Hall, from All Energy HQ World battery manufacturers are looking closely at events in Australia, and guess what … Queensland is expected to lead the charge, with NSW taking off in 2017.

Why is Australia leading the world?

We have the third highest electricity charges in the world.

Why is this? Because year after year our state governments have encouraged the grossly over capitalisation of the grid system when year after year electricity consumption is falling.

But don’t worry … it’s only you and I who are paying for their mistakes.

Australia has some very low feed in tariffs.

Yes it is a good system for the utility – they kindly pay the householder a paltry 6 cents a kWh for power sent to the grid and then graciously send it back to the householder after sunset for 25 cents a kWh. That’s about a 400% profit margin for the loan of a commodity for a few hours.

Australia is the most solarised country in the world per capita. We have 2.5 million households with solar.

Guess what – we are blessed with abundant sunshine. Even Dorothea Mackellar noticed that decades ago.

Increasing network charges.

And just hang onto your hat, the show hasn’t started yet. For about 100 years everyone’s dear friend Energex has “serviced” our electricity meters for free. And if any dear reader has had the need to have a meter “serviced” during the last 100 years please advise me because you may win a cigar. So it is fair to say that for the probable quarter million households in the Energex area in the last 100 years the meter “service” fee has maybe burdened Energex for a crippling sum of twelve shillings and nine pence a year.

Now this is a great testimony to the old fashioned employees who took great pride in their workmanship and made long-lasting reliable mechanical meters. Maybe Energex engineers don’t have the same confidence in the new electronic meters, which they have selected.

Or just maybe by changing this new swag of supply charges, service charges and any new ones they can invent is a method of just increasing their revenue from the little Aussie battlers in Queensland.

Surely, Energex wouldn’t do that. Monopolies don’t behave like that. Ask Telstra.

Anyhow, this is just the introduction, to the subject of Queensland and Australia’s battery storage boom.

Construction begins on new pound Construction of Sunshine Coast Council’s new animal pound facility is now underway, with completion expected by October.

The new facility will be located in Sippy Creek Road, Tanawha which is a central location in the region integral to servicing the domestic animal, livestock and poultry population.

Mayor Mark Jamieson said the new Sippy Creek Animal Pound would have the ability to service the region’s growing pet population and animal management needs now, and in to the future.

“The current pound has been servicing the Coast for more than 30 years and demand on the service has grown significantly over that time,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“We have a commitment to safely house lost or abandoned animals and the new pound will enable us to do so in a way that is aligned with contemporary animal welfare obligations and guidelines.”

Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the development would improve efficiencies by consolidating the existing small and large animal pound facilities.

“We currently have more than 38,000 dogs and 7,000 cats registered with council, and we expect this will increase along with our growing population,” Cr McKay said.

“The existing small animal compound is located in Tanawha, while the large animal compound is in North Landsborough.

“The new pound will bring these two services together and will include a cattery building with 32 individual cat enclosures, kennel building with 32 individual kennel modules, assessment facility for administering animal procedures, a large animal enclosure and central administration and reception building.

“The design and layout of the facility also allows for potential further expansion in conjunction with future population growth.”

The project is funded through council’s $183 million Capital Works Program as one of many operational, civil or recreational projects which council delivers to provide high quality services and facilities across the Sunshine Coast.

Environment Percy goes off the rails

Percy the juvenile platypus was found alone in a stormwater drain near the Caboolture Train Station on Thursday morning by a private security guard, who is now doubling as a Wildlife Warrior!

Upon his arrival to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, Percy was examined CONCENTRATION CONCENTRATION by vets and deemed fit and healthy for release by hospital staff. He weighed in at only half a kilogram and measured just short of a ruler.

On treating platypus patients, GOAL SETTING GOAL SETTING Dr Booth said although ANTI BULLYING ANTI BULLYING they’re not necessarily harder to treat than other wildlife, due to their elusive nature, platypus are often only found by rescuers when their health has deteriorated over time and they’re particularly unwell.

“We’re very pleased that Percy was brought in with no obvious injuries and that we do not need to prolong his release back into the wild,” she said.

Being in such good health, our encounter with Percy was brief and is a great sign that he will be perfectly capable of surviving independently in the wild.

During release, Percy was keen to explore his new surroundings and barrelled out of his transportation container with gusto. Impatient to return to the fresh spring water and relax in his new home, Percy ducked his head up in a quick goodbye, before settling in a much more comfortable environment.

Hopefully, Percy doesn’t go off the rails and into unfamiliar territory again.

Barung Landcare More than just mushrooms Contributed by Theresa Bint Our fungi group often go to Mapleton Forest to check out the fungi there.

We have discovered an area near a creek which I am beginning to think of as a ‘hotspot’ as we have found some rare and possibly endangered specimens there.

One of these is a Hydnellum sp. which belongs to the ‘spine’ group as it reproduces by bearing spores on the outside of spines which hang underneath the cap. This contrasts with the typical mushroom which produces spores on the gills.

It was found in wet sclerophyll forest growing in litter deposited by flood water. It can grow singly or sometimes several grow together in a kind of fused mass. The caps are 3-6 cm in diameter.

Other Hydnellum species occur in the northern hemisphere where they are ectomycorrhizal (a form of symbiotic relationship) with conifers but there is little information on this fungus in Australia.

Strong team for 2016 The Ananda Marga River School in Maleny is entering its 22nd year of operations with a strong staff team in 2016. Our Early Childcare Centre, under the guidance of Nicole Duncombe, is excited to welcome Katchia, an expert in free, and play-based learning.

In the Primary, new staff will join the existing dedicated team to create a holistic educational program based on Neohumanism that will include excellence in academics, music, dance, drama, film making, technologies, physical education and self-development through yoga and meditation.

At Glass House Mountains State School, they offer two great programs for non school age children that run during school terms.

One is the Coonowrin Kid’s Playgroup which runs on Wednesday mornings from 9.00am 11.00am, and is held in the school’s F Block.

Remember to bring a snack and drink for your child. Tea and coffee are provided and we have a coffee van that visits us on site.

The other program is Koala Joeys which is a free, fun, and interactive program to help parents develop an understanding of early literacy, numeracy, emotional and social skills, gross and fine motor development, and the importance of play for learning in the early years.

The program includes storytelling, specially selected songs, rhymes and dances. By attending Koala Joeys you can be more confident that your child will easily transition into school.

Koala Joeys meet any time after 8.30am for an 8.45am start on Thursday mornings in the School Hall.

New computers for students Mooloolah State school students are excited to use the new computer lab that has been set up in the resource centre.

For the first time, students from Prep to Year 6 will have access to the new computer lab as part of their curriculum to develop computer and research skills as a whole class using the 28 new computers installed. New chairs and desks were also purchased for the students to work comfortably at the computers.

The room is air conditioned with plenty of space for the students to work in.

Mooloolah students will be able to access programs like Reading Eggs, Mathletics, Spelling City and other learning tools. They will be able to use the internet to source current information for assignments and homework questions.

Having the new computers will allow students to work with up-to-date equipment and enhance their technological skills.

The computers and furniture were ordered at the end of 2015 with a huge contribution from the Mooloolah State School P&C. The students and staff would like to give a huge thank you to the P&C for helping their school acquire these new computers.

Multi-National Tax Avoidance

I am pleased to advise that Australia was one of 31 countries to sign a multilateral agreement to share tax information on the activities of multinational companies. This agreement will give the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) further scope to ensure companies pay their fair share of tax.

The agreement will facilitate the exchange of multinationals’ country-by-country reports between tax authorities in different jurisdictions. These reports will contain details of multinationals’ international transactions, including the location of their income and taxes paid, as well as setting out their transfer pricing policies.

This will now make it much harder for multinational companies to shift profit offshore by mispricing their dealings with foreign related entities and help to ensure they are paying their fair share of tax in Australia.

Just 1% of people die in circumstances which allow them to become an organ donor.

Register as an organ donor, and more importantly discuss your desire to be an organ donor with your family.

A recent audit shows that family consent rates to allow donation to go ahead are 91% when the deceased had registered as an organ donor, but are only 42% when the deceased has neither registered nor discussed their wishes with their family.

Donor families give an amazing gift and the more registered donors we have the more lives can be saved.

I know there is much excitement in the community that we finally have work progressing on traffic lights at the Reed Street and Steve Irwin Way intersection.

But I just wanted to take a moment, to remind drivers to use caution, while the works are underway.

I know it is frustrating that the speed limit has been reduced, but the short term inconvenience will be so worth it in the end.

I would like to also take the opportunity to thank everyone in the community for their support during our campaign to secure these lights and for your patience during the 12 months it has taken to get the project started.

First ever Glass House Small Business Awards

Over the past few months I have held several meetings with the Chamber of Commerce groups that operate in the Glass House electorate to discuss the idea of having our own small business awards during the Queensland Small Business Week in May this year.

Excitement is building and we are all looking forward to announcing details by the end of this month.

Gambling Community Benefit Fund grants

Recipients of round 86 of this grant program were recently announced and I am thrilled to say the Celebrate Beerwah, Glasshouse Musos, the Peachester History Committee Inc and the Glass House Mountains Primary P&C were all successful in their application.

Principal of Glass House Mountains State School, Mrs Elizabeth Somers took me on a tour of the school last year and showed me where they would like to install shade sails for their primary students.

I'm really pleased to see their application was successful.

I was also fortunate to be able to drop in on one of the Peachester History Committee’s monthly meetings so I could personally present them with a certificate to acknowledge their successful grant to upgrade the Peachester Hall.

Council elections called Last Friday, the Local Government elections were officially called to be held on Saturday, March 19. This kick starts a six-week election campaign for Divisional and Mayoral candidates.

As a consequence, Local Governments across Queensland have been placed in caretaker mode.

To maintain fair, balanced and equitable reporting on the election campaign of all candidates, Glasshouse Country & Maleny News implements special editorial guidelines, including the suspension of councillor columns until the election results are known.

Starting from next week’s edition, we will commence a series of features where the candidates in Division 1, Division 2 and for the Mayoralty are given space to introduce to readers who they are and what they stand for.

Following these will be question / answer style features for readers to gauge where they stand on specific issues.

In one study*, 316 infants with moderate to severe colic were adjusted. 94% of the children within 14 days of chiropractic care (usually three visits) showed a satisfactory response. Living 19th Century Clothes Washing In the 21st century, instructions for the washing of clothes are more about how to turn on and operate the machine rather than the washing method.

Back in the 19th century it was all about method. The following instructions were based on those in a book titled ‘Back in the Day – 101 things everyone used to know how to do’ written by Michael Powell.

1. Carry water from a nearby well or creek. Enlist the help of the family because you need lots of pails of water 2. Heat the washing water in an iron kettle or a large metal washtub 3. Sort the clothes into whites, colours and those that are very dirty; wash in that order.

4. Stir the clothes in the hot water with a long stick, then remove and scrub them on a washboard with homemade soap 5. Place washboard vertically in the washtub and bring the clothes out of the water. Rub them briskly on the metal or glass ridges and plunge them back in the water regularly 6. To remove stains, rub soap directly over the stain before using the washboard 7. Replace the water when it becomes too dirty and heat a fresh supply 8. Rinse clothes in two or more tubs of cold water to remove the soap 9. Wring the clothes out by hand or use a mechanical wringer 10. Peg them up on a line to dry.

Beerwah NHWQ Good Neighbour Award

The ‘Good Neighbour Award’ for February was presented at the meeting of Beerwah NHWQ held on February 1 to the Beerwah and District Rural Fire Brigade. Sylvia Shaw, who unfortunately was unable to be present, was the nominator. The citation read: ‘Our local Rural Fire Brigade, which began in 1990, covers 200 square kilometres and has four Fire Appliances and 32 members, all volunteers. Everyone who lived through the bush fires of 1994 will be well aware of the good work they do in case of a fire, but they are also there to assist the Glasshouse SES and Caloundra SES in flood assistance and clearing debris from dwellings. The Brisbane and Bundaberg floods saw members assisting these communities for extended periods helping in flood situations.’

Mystery solved

Regarding the letter in January 27 – ‘Mystery noise’ from Michelle Deveze. From your description, my guess is that it is macadamia farming related. When spraying, large sprayers on the back of tractors spray about six metres into trees, so this could be the noise. Or it could also be relating to when they are harvesting the nuts, where they use a large spinning, sweeping machine, that goes up and down the rows.

Re: Leone Newell, GC&M News in February 3 edition, it's gratifying to see that others are finally starting to question the myth of global warming. Have you noticed how the Green alarmist groups are not calling it ‘Global Warming’? That's because they got caught with their pants down when eminent scientists disproved their theories, so they changed tactics and they have started calling it ‘Climate Change’.

The truth is the planet has in fact cooled by 0.71 degrees over the last decade. And as for the CO2 levels they keep waffling on about, and telling us we have to have a carbon tax, to reduce this mythical man-made CO2 level that is killing us, what a crock.

So for all you armchair experts out there who are convinced that a carbon tax is going to save the planet, I have just one thing to say.

Taxing CO2 achieves nothing for the environment.

In fact, it deprives real environmental issues from receiving funds.

A carbon tax will have a disastrous impact on lower and middle income earners.

Even if drastic measures were imposed equally on all countries around the world to reduce the total human CO2 contribution by as much as 30%, this would reduce total CO2 by an insignificant percentage.

It would have no effect whatsoever on the climate, but it would totally destroy the economies of every country and dramatically lower everyone’s living standards.

Most people and politicians are making decisions emotively, not factually, about a complex science they know virtually nothing about.

We have been grossly misled for years to think there is tens of thousands of tonnes more CO2 in the atmosphere than there really is!

Re: The truth of the matter, GC&M News, February 3 edition. I have to concur with Leone Newell, as I have read similar articles.

The Federation Drought from 1890-1904 was caused by three El Ninos in a row. During that time 50 million sheep died, which was half of the nation’s flock; 40% of cattle also perished.

Recently I read an article by Geoff Derrick, a consultant Geologist, which was aimed at our Prime Minister.

He suggested that Malcom look out of his Sydney Harbour mansion and examine what has happened in the vicinity.

In 1788 Arthur Phillip, on landing at Sydney Cove, immediately set up a weather station on board Sirius.

This was manned by William Bradley from 27/1/1788-14/9/1788, when a land based station was built. That station was manned by William Dawes who took up to six measurements per day until 6/12/1891. These measurements were discovered in the Library of the Royal Society of London in 1977.

In 2009 three Australians, Geris, Karoly and Allan examined these and later compared them to measurements from Observatory Hill (Sydney) taken between 1859 and 2014. They used average monthly temperatures and to everyone's surprise they matched almost exactly.

So there has been no increase in average temperatures in the Sydney Harbour area for the last 226 years.

Geoff also noted that Malcom could see Fort Denison from his patio. They have collected tidal recordings there since 1886. These show a steady rise of 0.65mm/yr.

A ride on the Manly Ferry and short drive to Collaroy Beach would reveal a fishing hut that was built on the shore in 1870. Photos taken over the ensuing years show it in exactly the same position in relation to the shoreline.

It would be safe to say that there has been no major rise in ocean levels in the Sydney area for last 129 years.

A head for heights

By Sonia Clark Noelle Dean has a head for heights; in previous years among her various other adventures, she has happily completed a tandem skydive as well as flown in a tiger moth. Not bad for a devoted wife, mother and great-grandmother who is also President of the Glasshouse Country Ladies Bowls Club. So at the end of last month when it came around to celebrating her 80th birthday Noelle knew exactly what she wanted to do - she wanted to head back up to the skies for another exhilarating skydive!

“I enjoyed it so much the first time and talk about an adrenaline rush! It was a great way to celebrate becoming 80!” said Noelle.

The plane for Noelle’s skydive departed from Caloundra airport and Noelle and her skydiving companion landed at Currimundi Beach where she was excitedly greeted by family members upon completing the dive. Then it was back to the airport to view the video of the dive, followed by lunch at the Powerboat Club with her family, to celebrate both the successful dive and her birthday.

“I love to be active and embrace living. Planning to do the dive was a great way to use my mind and do something a bit adventurous.

The adrenaline certainly makes you feel alive,” laughed Noelle.

Now that all the diving is out of the way for the moment, next on Noelle’s must do list is a visit to the famous ‘Cameron Corner’.

In another notable milestone, to commemorate her 80th birthday, Noelle was awarded her ‘Super Veteran’ badge from Glasshouse Country Bowls Club. Noelle has been with the club for many years and has already received her ‘Veteran’ badge (when she turned 70). She now looks forward to wearing her new badge with pride.

Maleny Grove’s newly appointed village manager Greg Guilford (pictured) met with residents at the village clubhouse last week. Greg brings to the role many years of experience in senior positions in the hospitality industry. "There are a lot of parallels between my previous and current position," he said.

A village is not unlike a hotel, but instead of having guests who come and go, residents remain to live the relaxed and supportive community lifestyle.

We’re well away to another year with strong membership and comfortable fellowship. This is a Club in which you feel you’re part of a supportive family geared to keeping your mind active.

Traditionally, our Annual Honour Board records those of our members who came up with that extra special Club activity to boost our lives which either made it happen or produced the idea that made it work.

Eight of our members were awarded this year.

Di, Catherine, Marie, Riny, Bev, Coral, Ken and Steve carried home the chocolate box trophies.

Our guest list for the next year will cover topics such as piracy on the high seas, a reminisce of the hospital ship Centaur and the story of a service we rely on, QR rail.

For outings, we’ll have a good mix of home barbecues and trips, such as a day on the river or a wander through the Museum or Art Gallery or maybe learn about waste disposal.

Our ‘Musical Morning with Peter’ covering a wide range of styles from Beethoven to Slim Dusty is always a winner and our periodic ‘Chat Morning’ on a member’s verandah is a lovely time to just relax and have a yarn with friends.

Pensioner electricity concessions safe Treasurer Curtis Pitt has again assured Queensland pensioners and seniors their existing electricity bill concessions are not at risk.

“As I stated yesterday, the Palaszczuk Government is focussed on looking after our pensioners and making sure their concessions are safe,” Mr Pitt said.

“We will always ensure we look after our pensioners and make sure their existing concessions are safe.

“Everyone can remember the debacle under the previous LNP government when concessions were removed and had to be reinstated a day later.

“We will always listen to stakeholders and the Palaszczuk Government will always do its best to look after the interests of our pensioners and low-income earners,” Mr Pitt said.

One of their ‘Senior’ computer volunteers sharing his expert skills is Brian Machin, from Landsborough, who assists people at the Beerwah Library.

Brian has been a computer tutor at Beerwah Library since his retirement in 2012.

“I really enjoy my volunteer role at Beerwah Library as it is a very friendly place, well-used by the community, and they’re a great group of staff,” he said.

“I have a vast background in communications and IT and felt I could share my experience with the community.

“Volunteering is my way of finally being able to give back to the community – something that is somewhat difficult when you work full time.

“The benefits of being a tutor are seeing clients learn and grow, being unafraid of their device and having a go. I also meet some wonderful people,” he added.

“I have seen people come to me with their laptop/phone/tablet still in the box as they have been too confronted to even turn their device on.

“I would like to see more volunteers with the broad range of my skill sets as there is definitely a need for this knowledge to be available for our community.”

A Diamond of a celebration

Gum Leaves, candles, and diamonds set the scene as Gordon and Cath Howitt, of Peachester, celebrated their 60th Wedding anniversary at ‘The Hideway’ in Beerwah. Family, friends and three of the original wedding guests travelled from New Zealand, Perth and everywhere in between.

With much hilarity the gorgeous flower girl, (+ 60 years) complete with matching head gear and basket of flowers, led the happy couple into the function room that had been lovingly decorated with special photos and memorabilia depicting Gordon and Cath’s 60 years together.

The celebration, organised by their four daughters, was full of surprises. Cath always dressed her daughters in home-made matching outfits so matching pinnies on the night, added to the festivities.

A family always known for having lots of fun and laughter, when the congratulatory letters were delivered from the Queen, the Governor General and the Prime Minister, the daughters were suitably attired!

Stories and memories from the flower girl and brother of the groom (a well know NZ rugby journalist) certainly entertained the guests.

Their secret to 60 years of marriage is plenty of laughter, always working as a team, doing everything together, and communication.

Initially the new friends I made were basically neighbours, however I also now have lovely friends that I have made through being involved in Toastmasters.

Back when I was working in Melbourne, my boss was a Toastmaster, and I thought that it only catered to business people.

Anyhow I decided to give it a go and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

I was terrified the first time I turned up but, wow, what a friendly bunch of people they were and I was made welcome by one and all.

I was never pushed into anything that I didn’t want to do and could go at my own pace.

Through Glasshouse Country Toastmasters I have gained confidence, made some fantastic friends, learnt how to speak up for what I think is right, and be myself.

I’ve previously discovered the main meal size is a little bit too big for me, so I enjoyed a entrée size Fettuccine Piselli which has a light meat and tomato sauce and a sprinkling of peas across the top.

Brownie loves a good meat dish so he went for the Pork Scaloppine Marsala with a side salad which he loved, and recommended the half carafe of house red to go with it.

Good thing that I sipped on sparkling water so was not alarmed at all when the very polite police officer flagged me over at Landsborough for a breath test on the way home!

After a crazy busy few days last week, we decided to head along to Cappriccio's Italian Pizza Restaurant on Wednesday night, and as usual it was the best decision we made that day.

The restaurant has a really relaxed atmosphere and the food is always great we have been working our way through the menu and it never disappoints.

After sharing a really tasty focaccia which is served with sun-dried tomato, garlic and herbs and some mozzarella, I headed straight to the pasta menu.

As a pasta lover, it is hard to go past the taste of fresh pasta, and at Cappriccio's all but the gluten free pasta in made in-house.

A few years back a survey by the Australian Bureau of Statistics on what Australian farmers do about managing their natural resources turned up some amazing results – and some pretty huge figures.

The survey asked managers of agricultural businesses to identify the extent and type of weed, pest, and land and soil problems present on their land, and the activities they undertook to prevent or manage them.

It found that Australian farmers spent more than $1.5 billion controlling weeds, $768 million battling pests and $649 million preventing land and soil problems.

The total cost of managing these problems was almost $3 billion.

Nationally, nearly two thirds of farmers reported that they had improved their natural resource management practices. Of these, 89% reported doing so to increase productivity, 88% for farm sustainability, and 75% to improve environmental protection.

The study found that farmers look after 425 million hectares of land, or just over half (55%) of Australia's land mass.

More amazing is that only 150,000 agricultural businesses were found to be involved in looking after this 55% of the entire area of our wide brown land.

That’s a big responsibility on a small number of landholders.

Not surprisingly, Queensland farming businesses managed the largest amount of agricultural land (143 million ha) of any of the States. Western Australia ranked second with 96 million hectares.

Again not surprisingly, Tasmania had the smallest amount of farming land with only 1.6 million hectares.

But amazingly, Tasmania spent almost the highest per hectare on addressing natural resource management problems ($38.00 per hectare).

Queensland farmers spent $572 million on addressing weeds, pests, soil and land problems.

Incredibly, they toiled for a collective 2,395,946 person days looking after their natural resources.

Nationally, the most commonly reported NRM problems were pests (70.4%), followed by weeds (66.0%) and land and soil (56.4%). But it seems that farmers spend most time fighting weed invasions (88.8%), followed by pest related management activities (80.4%) and land and soil related management activities (60.1%).

Typically, a higher proportion of farmers reported undertaking activities than those reporting a problem, indicating that natural resource management problems are managed preventatively as well as remedially.

So here’s a big congratulations to our farmers, and thank you for being such good land stewards. It’s the future generations who’ll benefit from all your hard labour (all 2,395,946 person days of it).

The tolerance and intolerance of Jesus Many people think Christians should be the most tolerant of all people and should more accepting, and not critical or judgemental of others. While there is a case to be made for that, Christians strive to be followers of Christ, and look to him as a model on how to live.

Jesus was indeed tolerant of people. He associated with the poor, sick and hungry, much to the disdain of religious leadership of the day whose attitudes towards these people were quite wrong and not God-honouring. Jesus repeatedly defended the down trodden, showing love, kindness and support for them. We certainly need to be seen as doing likewise in our local communities.

However, it seems that there is a misunderstanding among some, that Christians have to be tolerant about any and everything that goes on in society these days. Whatever the 51% majority says is 'right' and 'true', is now something that Christians must accept and be tolerant of.

But Jesus was not very tolerant on a number of things. He was and is always intolerant of sin. He never redefined sin, but instead called for people to repent of their sins and trust in

Matthew 12:30 ESV 'Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.'

When Jesus said we are not to 'judge others' he was referring to people judging another’s heart or mind such that we assign them to heaven or hell, which is something only God the Father can do.

However, Jesus also said that we are to judge the actions of people. We pray for repentance of sin. During this process we are to love and pray for those in sinful habits. We don’t reject them image-bearers of God…but we don’t tolerate their behaviour either.

Being tolerant means being tolerant of those who are at odds with you and still loving them.

It doesn’t mean that everyone has to believe the same things.

Hailey Deacon of Bald Knob, was part of Queensland U19 Women’s softball team who were the runners up after narrowly missing out on claiming a National Championship take down, after being defeated by their NSW counterparts in their Finals.

The Women’s competition for the 43rd NSR U19 Elinor McKenzie Shield saw the Queensland U19 Women’s team put on some outstanding displays of softball throughout the duration of the tournament, held from January 17 – 23 at Redlands Softball Association, Ormiston.

Leading into the Final, Queensland had won an incredible 11 out of 14 games played, including several matches in which their opponents were unable to put a single run on the board.

However, the Final match saw Queensland go up against a strong NSW side, to be defeated 8-0 on home ground and finish as runners up for the 2016 Championship Title.
