n Saturday afternoon we headed down to the Beerwah Sportsground to witness the start of the first Hinterland Relay for Life.

I have to say while there were less than 10 teams - they had done an absolutely incredible job in fundraising, with a combined total of over $22,000 achieved in the lead up to the day.

These days there is so much competition for the fundraising dollar for so many worthwhile and valuable causes, so for this one group of crazy individuals to achieve this must be something of great pride for them all.

However I have to say what I loved most about the day was the serious attention to detail in creating their individual team identity.

The Dessert Divas looked great in their stylish aprons and decorated wooden spoons, but my favourite was definitely the ‘Angels of Care’ from Embracia in Glasshouse Country.

While the work of the Council Cancer is definitely no laughing matter, the organisers have definitely created a positive way for people to come together to celebrate surviving, to remember those lost and to give us all a way to fight back.

As previously reported in Glasshouse Country News (May 16, 2012), since May, Seqwater has been lowering the dam level to meet safety requirements while they undertake construction work to upgrade the dam.

A spokesperson for Seqwater said that the works, during June – December 2012, are to strengthen and widen the dam wall embankment, as well as to install relief wells to control groundwater levels.

“To minimise risk during construction, the dam’s full supply level has been reduced to 75 per cent and this level will be maintained until the work is completed in December, 2012,” the spokesperson said.

According to the Seqwater website, the level of the dam is currently at 72 per cent of capacity, which is lower than it has been since July 2009, when Seqwater commenced keeping records.

The current level is the lowest of all the locally Seqwater-managed dams – with Baroon Pocket Dam at 93 per cent, Borumba Dam 100 per cent, Lake McDonald 93 per cent, North Pine Dam 97 per cent, Wappa Dam 99 per cent, Somerset Dam 100 per cent and Wivenhoe Dam 98 per cent.

The Seqwater spokesperson asked people to be cautious when swimming or boating on Ewen Maddock Dam during this time.

“The current water level is not considered to be abnormally low.

“However, as is always the case when undertaking water-based recreation in a dam or

Although it appears that Seqwater is still utilising the water for the supply grid, no response was given when we asked how low the dam would have to get before the water was stopped being drawn off for coastal residents.

Jill Chamberlain, from the local branch of the Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland, says the low water level would probably be having an impact on breeding waterbirds at the moment.

“But on the other hand, the waders such as egrets and spoonbills, would be loving the mudflats. I’ve even seen a black necked stork (or Jabiru) recently, which I haven’t seen for years,” Jill said.

And if we ever get rain again, Seqwater say that we’ll need a decent drenching to bring back the old dam as we knew it.

“Many factors need to be considered in estimating the amount of rainfall required to take Ewen Maddock Dam back to 100 per cent of full supply, including the level of catchment saturation (which effects water run-off) and how the rain falls across the catchment, as falls may not be uniform across the catchment. It is estimated that in excess of 250mm across the catchment would be required to fill the dam,” they explained.

In the meantime, enjoy the opportunity to see again the old highway before she goes under the murky waters of ‘The Ewen’.

A group of local four-wheel-drive enthusiasts who are fed up with the local Glasshouse Country forests being used as a dumping ground for rubbish are putting their backs into doing something about it.

Glass House Mountains local Shane Ryall is part of the organising team and hopes to have around 50 people out on October 20 collecting dumped rubbish.

“Being part of a responsible driving group means that we really get wound up by people who don’t respect our environment and dump rubbish everywhere,” Shane said.

“We enjoy the outdoors and, being locals, we hate to see the area treated like a tip, so we thought that by cleaning up some of the worst areas, it may act as a deterrent to others littering and dumping in the future.”

Local businesses have jumped on board too, and are helping out where they can with sponsorship and donations of their time or resources.

In a show of solidarity surrounding the issue of illegal dumping, the Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN) have also got behind the group and will be supporting them on the day.

Margaret’s fundraising mission continues It was more than two years ago that locals showed their support for the women and children of a small Kenyan village by helping Margaret Briggs raise enough money to supply them with mosquito nets.

Today, in between in her business commitments and ongoing fundraising, Margaret is once again calling on the local community for support as she continues her quest to help the villagers of Blori strive for a better life.

Earlier this year, Margaret travelled to the village to see firsthand the remarkable work that one man, Ben Otieno, has done in helping improve the lives of these villagers through a not-for-profit organisation, Boro Division Villages Development Network.

The Boro Division Villages Development Network, chaired by Ben, came up with a simple plan for villages in Boro, Kenya, to shake the shackles of poverty and neglect by empowering the villagers themselves to take control of their future, by teaching them new skills and helping with resources to get projects off the ground.

So inspired was she by what she saw, Margaret is now upping the ante on her fundraising efforts, and will later this year host an inaugural fundraising auction in an effort to see the good work continue.

“My visit to the village of Blori was much more than I expected. I had prepared myself for the worst, but I was inspired by what I saw,” Margaret said.

“These villagers are using the resources they have been provided with and doing all the work

In addition to the first lot of mosquito nets sent over in 2010, an additional 300 were handed out during Margaret’s April visit themselves, raising poultry, farming fish and horticulture, and tending a tree nursery.

“By empowering the villagers, the various projects being coordinated by Ben are helping them gain a sense of pride, which in turn is helping them transform their lives.”

Margaret said what they had already achieved was remarkable, considering the villages have no running water or electricity, and where malaria is the number one killer.

“These people are just so grateful for all the support that has been shown by our local community.

“During my visit, I had villagers invite me into their mud huts, to proudly show me their skin, which is now free of mosquito bites thanks to the nets we sent over.

“They were just so grateful, it’s hard to put into words what an enormous difference our small contributions are making to them.”

Margaret’s inaugural fundraiser auction will be held at Key Restaurant in Maleny, on Sunday, December 2. The African-themed event will feature a two-course buffet lunch, entertainment and an auction, with some great prizes up for grabs, including a generous donation from Margaret’s private collection of John Farnham memorabilia, a signed, framed Broncos jersey, antique jewellery boxes and much more.

Pineapple growers see mulch benefits Pineapple producers throughout the Sunshine Coast are reaping the benefits from the inclusion of ‘living mulches’ sown as inter-row crops.

A green cover crop, inter-row living mulches are providing a platform for improved land management and weed control as well as reducing soil erosion and subsequent nutrient losses for producers.

Currently, four Glasshouse region pineapple producers are involved in living mulch trials, along with a number of producers based in Yeppoon, in an attempt to minimise soil and sediment loss through erosion and water runoff.

Agronomist Col Scott (Tropical Pines) has been passing on the word to other Tropical Pines growers.

“As we move into the wetter months the risk of high erosion potential mounts,” Mr Scott said.

“These inter-row crops act as a buffer that holds fertile topsoil in place, improving water infiltration and runoff capture.”

He said sediment loss has been shown to decrease by up to 78 per cent in plots that contained living mulch, compared to standard management practices.

Murray Pike is in his second year of utilising living mulch as a solution to weather erosion, and he is noticing “huge benefits for soil erosion.”

He has found that all silt is retained in the patch, with no soil movement, as root mass binds the soil and keeps the integrity of the mounds intact.

“I believe it is one of the best recent things we have done on the farm, and while we have always managed our soils the best we can, this definitely works well,” Mr Pike said.

Inter-row crops have been identified as a measure that significantly reduces erosion. They maintain plant bed heights while working to build up microbes within the soil, assisting in retaining excess nitrogen and nutrient cycling.

Mr Pike has found that the “crops act as a ground cover that stops rain impacting the soil for the first six months until the pineapple plants have been established.”

A concern of some producers is that, in retaining higher moisture levels within the plots, there is a possibility of creating an ideal environment for phytophthora spores (a type of soil-borne water mould) to flourish. However, living mulch has been found to pose no risk of increasing problems of phytophthora, as moisture levels in the top soil layers are not altered.

Cover crops such as oats, sorghum, pinto peanut and millet varieties are most commonly sown within the inter-row space.

Currently, Mr Pike is seeding oats over the winter months and sorghum over summer.

These varieties are nematode resistant and contain allelopathic properties that work to suppress seed germination and growth, reducing reliance on commercial pesticides and herbicides.

‘PLACE+Beerwah’ a winner

Fun, faith and friendship

Sunshine Coast Council’s ‘PLACE+Beerwah’ project won recognition for its commitment to community engagement at the recent Industry Award ceremony held by the Place Leaders Association’s (PLA).

The project was recognised for its multidirectorate approach to activity centre development through collaboration between council, the community and key stakeholders, receiving the PLA’s Towards Best Practice Award.

The council’s community engagement process culminated in Community and Council Action Plans that outline a collaborative place-making approach for future projects in the region.

The PLA’s Chairman, Dr Robert Lang, said: “It is exciting to see a council willing to take the lead from its community.

“The ‘PLACE+Beerwah’ project is a further example of the importance of listening to and engaging with our communities to ensure successful outcomes,” Dr Lang said.

Rosie Ukkola of Beerwah is a university student studying education as well as one of three Youth Leaders who run Church on the Rise’s ‘Impact Youth’ group.

The group is for Year 7 through to Year 12 students; however Rosie said that it is predominantly students from Year 8 to Year 10 who meet at the church on Peachester Road on a Friday night between 7.00pm and 9.00pm.

Rosie describes the three key elements of the group as being “fun, friendship and faith.” The group provides a chance for young people to come together, enjoy themselves and share their time with other young people with the same morals and values.

Every second week there are activities and outings which have included: bowling, ice-skating, going to the beach and going camping. Some of these are done on a Saturday.

On the alternate weeks, the group evenings are based at the church where they play games, have food and get involved in interactive discussions, or sometimes enjoy hearing from an inspirational speaker.

The group’s other two leaders are Daniel, who is 30 years old and runs his own business, and Ben (who Rosie describes as being in-training) who works at Australia Zoo. All three people sharing the leadership role have complementary skills and knowledge that helps them work well as a team.

Having been involved in the youth group herself when she was younger, Rosie knows what it is like being a teenager and she understands the issues young people face and is happy for them to share their concerns and discuss the challenges they face in their day to day lives.

Former Beerwah local Amanda Cox and her husband Adam are taking on the Ocsober challenge, which encourages participants to give up alcohol during the month of October.

As well as raising awareness of the issues relating to alcohol abuse, participants in the challenge raise funds for vital health and drug prevention education for Aussie children.

"As the parents of four children we believe it is important that all young children need to be educated in the dangers of drugs," Amanda said.

Amanda and Adam know that the hardest thing about this month will be not being able to relax at the end of a hard week with a coldie – but they believe the cause is worth it, and have a goal of raising $700.00.

Cathy Condon of BADYACC BADYACC recently had an open day and GCNews popped down and talked to the co-ordinator, Cathy Condon, to find out a bit more about what happens there and who can access their services.

Q. So firstly, what is BADYACC? A. BADYACC stands for Beerwah and District Youth and Community Centre and is basically like any other community or neighbourhood centre.

But our focus is completely on supporting the younger members of our community and, for us, young means up to 25-years-old. We have a number of private office spaces as well as community meeting rooms which are available for use by a range of community services.

Q. So what types of services are available?

A. We provide assistance for the broad range of issues that face young people and this can be in the form of counselling, employment advice, assisting to reconnect young people with their families, emergency relief and self development programs.

Q. So can people come in anytime to speak to someone?

A. We have a schedule of when different types of services are available. This includes Tuesday afternoon between 1.00pm and 3.00pm, when we have someone come out from Centrelink who is available to help predominately people under 25 years old with any of their Centrelink payment issues. From 9.00am – 2.00pm on Wednesday, FOCUS is here and they provide drug and alcohol counselling. We also offer a young parents’ support program from 10.30am to 12.00noon on Wednesday for young or expectant parents.

Q. In GCNews a while ago we ran a story about an event co-ordination program for young people. How is that progressing and what upcoming events are there?

A. This is in partnership with Sunshine Coast Youth Partnerships and the group of young people involved meets up after school from 3.00pm. They are involved in organising events for local youth as part of a Spring Fiesta and they have three events planned: On November 2, a Dance Party will be held at the Beerwah Community Hall from 6.30 to 9.30pm. Then, on November 16, there will be Beerwah Tunes at the Beerwah Community Hall, 6.30pm – 9.30pm – and on December 1 there will be Beerwah Tunes II at the Beerwah Community Hall, 6.30pm – 9.30pm.

Q. What advice would you provide to locals about accessing the services you provide?

A: BADYACC is here for the whole of the community. However, we are funded to specifically cater for young people between the ages of 10 to 25. I would encourage anyone to pick up the phone or just come and drop in to the centre to find out how to access the services or to be part of some of the programs running.

Don’t forget to pick up a Lions Christmas Cake Once again this year, our local Beerwah Lions Club members will be making sure that they sell plenty of Lions Christmas Cakes and Puddings as part of their annual fundraising efforts.

By purchasing a cake – either the 1.5kg for $15.00, or the 1kg one for $11.00, as well as the lovely puddings for $11.00 – you will be assisting the Lions in supporting many local charities and institutions, such as schools and local bushfire brigades, as well as funding medical research into cancer and sight problems.

The Lions Australia Christmas Cake Program has been operating since 1966 and, during this period, more than 50 million dollars has been available to clubs for their service work.

The cakes are made to a special recipe and contain over 50 per cent fruit, much more than most cakes available in shops, and they are an ideal present for friends and family.

The process involves single-use fine gauge needles to stimulate the relaxation of the muscles, targeting the ‘trigger points’ that release muscle tension and provide relief both at the local site, and in regions away from the problem area that are supplied by the same nerve distribution.

If you are concerned about the idea of needles Brendan can reassure you that in most situations you won’t even know the needles have been inserted.

“The technique is far less uncomfortable than a firm massage. It’s more precise in achieving the release of muscle fibres than physical pressure is,” he says.

Peachester students learn to bush dance

By Lauren Davidson, work experience student from Beerwah State High School Since the end of August this year, the Year 5, 6 and 7 students at Beerburrum State School have been taking advantage of their new kitchen through weekly cooking classes and garden harvests.

Earlier this year the school received a grant through the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation which helped to fund a garden and kitchen projects which have been in progress all year.

Students are able to cook in the kitchen once a week on Thursdays and learn a variety of fun and healthy recipes including ingredients sourced from the school garden or from the local farming area.

Kitchen specialist Tina Davidson and garden specialist Lorelle Fisher work closely with the students in the garden and while preparing meals

Year 6 students Aiden Matthews and Jack Gilday getting their hands dirty in the kitchen which they get to eat.

Garden classes occur once a week for 45 minutes, during which they harvest fresh vegetables for their next cooking class.

Each Thursday features a new recipe. Some favourites prepared so far include: hot potato salad, strawberry milkshakes, zucchini muffins, and potato and leek soup.

Kitchen specialist Tina said the kids are always excited and can’t wait to get into the kitchen.

The program is great for introducing them to a range of healthier food choices and it gives them skills in the kitchen that they will have for the rest of their lives.

Goodstart Early Learning Centre Contributed by Carla Shultz The sun was shining and the birds chirping as the staff from Goodstart Early Learning set up a marquee at the Glass House Mountains State School ready for their Festival of Fun. Armed with 18 bottles of hair spray, icing and biscuits, (all not to be used together of course) they were armed and ready for business.

The day started off slowly, but soon the children were flowing in, ready for their hair to become a rainbow of colour, and ready to make their iced creations.

Our business really picked up when we informed the children that all proceeds would be going back into the school.

This caused an influx of children all busting to get their hair done and ice the biscuits.

We had to pack up early as we ran out of supplies – who knew 18 bottles of hair spray wouldn’t be enough!

All staff enjoyed getting in and interacting with everyone who came into our marquee.

Some parents and children did not know that we had changed names or that we even existed. This was an excellent way to promote our business and show to the community that we are here and want to be involved. We were able to raise $115.00 for the Glass House Mountains State School.

Well, it’s back to school again ... and the students at Peachester State School have an extra spring in their step. Each class is learning a dance which they will take part in at the Bush Dance Bonanza on Saturday night, October 27 – Peachester State School’s major fundraiser for 2012! One of the classes will be dancing the Pride of Erin, an old favourite we all remember learning during our school life.

Learning dance as part of their physical education program this term is wonderful to see. It teaches students social interaction skills and is great exercise while having so much fun!

Here’s what some of the students had to say: “It's heaps of fun leaning new dances!” (Jessie, seven). “I like learning new moves.” (Emily, eight).

Peachester State School’s Bush Dance Bonanza will be held at the Peachester Hall with good old fashioned country atmosphere on Saturday, October 27. Doors open at 5.00pm for a barbeque dinner. There will be a licensed bar and a mega multi-draw raffle throughout the evening.

New iphone - Unless you live in a cave, you will know Apple have released the new iPhone 5: slightly thinner, larger screen, better speakers and new reversible data/charger connector. iPhone5 is also reported to have less ‘toxic’ metal components; i.e. less impact on the planet at manufacture and disposal.

Last month we spoke about what to actually do with your Facebook page once you’ve created it.

Our main points were:

iOS 6 caution - With the new iPhone release comes iOS 6, operating system for iPhone 5 and upgrade for older phones and iPads. iOS 6 has caused great angst for many customers; apart from wireless issues, the mapping has suffered greatly. Downgrading back to iOS 5 was possible, but is no longer an option! Not all users suffer software malfunctions, but you may find some of your apps haven’t caught up yet.

Our advice: put off upgrading to iOS 6 for a while, to give Apple and the App developers time to sort out their challenges.

Coming soon - Office 2013. With the impending Microsoft Windows 8 release, we also see Office 2013. Microsoft is introducing a new way to buy Office 2013. Instead of purchasing outright, you can pay an annual license fee; this will be cheaper upfront, however you will need to renew every year. We still have several customers using Office 2003 who are happy; theirs would have been a huge saving compared to a proposed annual fee. On a side note, as things slowly migrate to the ‘cloud’, Office 365 could be a good option - this service is provided to Australia through Telstra. Alternatively, if you are prepared to learn a slightly different way to create office documents, you might try ‘Open Office’ which you can download free; quite a saving in anyone’s book!

There’s a few ways: 1. Add a Facebook 'Like' button to your website - code can be inserted into your actual website so that visitors can see how many Facebook likes you have, then jump on the bandwagon by liking you too!

Drop some hints - when updating your personal Facebook status, you may wish to mention your business page and suggest that people may like to 'join' or 'follow' you to keep updated on your individual offerings / area of expertise. For example: 'Exciting new line of clothing has just been announced, follow me on www.facebook.com/superclothes for all the latest updates'.

3. Create a Facebook Ad - a Facebook Ad will show your chosen message and image to exactly the types of users you specify. For example you could target 20 - 30 year old males in the Sunshine Coast. Your ad needs to entice these users to click through to your own Facebook page and then click “like”. This option is not free, but can be quite effective.

Curves goes Pink. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which means that Curves Beerwah is raising funds for vital women’s cancer research, prevention and support services.

This year, Curves clubs across Australia are striving to meet the goal of raising $1.5 million through a series of events and initiatives throughout the month of October. These include hosting Girls’ Night In parties, selling Pink Ribbon Merchandise at all outlets and, according to Linda of Curves Beerwah, the club will waive its standard fee of $149.00 for any woman who shows proof of a recent mammogram or makes a donation to breast cancer.

Community News What’s new in Rotary?

It will be a big night for Rotarians and their friends at the meeting at the Beerwah Hotel on October 15, at 6.15pm for 6.45pm.

First there will be the launch of the 2013 Rotary Charity Calendar, which is sponsored by local businesses and illustrated with images by local photographers.

The photographs depicting our Glass House Mountains were displayed at the library, and 13 images were chosen for the calendar.

For each chosen image, the photographer received a voucher from Australia Zoo / Fuji Films. The front cover was the people’s choice and the winner received a digital camera sponsored by Australia Zoo / Fuji Films.

All proceeds from the sale of the calendars will be used to help children with cystic fibrosis and other needy children. Calendars will be available at different outlets and online at www.glasshouserotary.com.au for $7.50 plus postage.

Does the word ‘ShelterBox’ ring a bell? If not; the ShelterBox provides emergency shelter and lifesaving supplies for families around the world who are affected by disasters, at the time when they need it the most.

Each large, green ShelterBox is tailored to a disaster but typically contains a disaster relief tent for an extended family, blankets, water storage and filtration equipment, cooking utensils, a stove, a basic tool kit, a children’s activity pack and other vital items.

This is a Rotary project and it was started in the United Kingdom in 1999. We will be hearing from Greville Easte, the Director of Shelterbox Australia for Queensland and the Northern Territory, as our guest speaker on the night.

Arts and crafts plus fish and chips Contributed by Pauline Clarke, Publicity Officer Glasshouse Country View Club On Wednesday, October 3, 25 members from the Glasshouse Country View Club visited the Bribie Island Arts Centre for a tour and morning tea. The centre provided the opportunity for us to see potters, silversmiths, woodcrafters and gem crafters in action, as well as viewing all of the extensive exhibits in the art centre and adjacent gallery. It was a great morning, followed by a trip to The Esplanade for a fish and chips lunch.

The next View Club meeting is on Wednesday, October 17, at the Glasshouse Sports Club, at 11.00am for 11.30am, where our speaker will be John Major, a well-known bush poet.

Gubbi Gubbi Dyungungoo Group Contributed by Ross Smith Work has been continuing at the Dyungungoo property in Diamond Valley, with Green Army participants doing 15 weeks of work, clearing lantana and planting and watering trees.

This was organised through Murriajabree Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Association, with the aboriginal youth gaining invaluable cultural training, being taught respect for the land, as well as gaining on-ground environmental restoration practice.

The group was ably led by Gubbi Gubbi traditional custodian, Tony Ayers.

Tony actually went to school and grew up in Mooloolah, has a wealth of experience in a range of fields, and is a very positive role model, instilling respect, cultural values, and good work ethics and practices in the group. They respond to him very positively. We are very fortunate to have Tony on board as a Dyungungoo committee member.

Isaac and Isabella Burgess Two of the ancestors who figure largely in the Bankfoot House story are Isaac Hudson Burgess and his second wife, Isabella Landell Petrie.

Isaac was a Cheshire man who sailed to Australia with his first wife, Hannah Lake, in 1863. Hannah had already given birth to five children of whom only two survived, and she was destined to die at the end of a seven-day premature labour in 1876.

Isaac Hudson Burgess was the first settler in Landsborough (1871) and Maleny (1878). He had previously been carrying goods with a horse team to the Gympie gold fields when he erected a slab house with a bark roof on Portion 1, Parish of Bribie. This building was a place of call for Cobb & Co coaches and was known as Mellum Creek until renamed Landsborough in 1889.

Isaac Hudson Burgess, wife Isabella and baby William Smith Burgess, born 1878

A red cedar log from the Burgess property near Maleny was shipped to England for the Colonial and Indian Exhibition in 1886. The log measured 247 inches (6.2735 metres) in circumference.

Isaac received a medal for the event and this medal was presented to the Landsborough Historical Museum by the Burgess family in 1979.

It was Isaac’s second wife, Isabella, who gave birth to Bankfoot House ancestor, William Smith Burgess, in 1878. In 1902, WS Burgess married Clementina Grigor, youngest daughter of Bankfoot House founders, William and Mary Grigor, and moved into Bankfoot House. WS Burgess was an early teamster, timber-getter and councillor in the Landsborough Shire for 33 years.

Isabella had died in 1891 when WS Burgess was a young lad and Isaac Burgess married Mary Teresa Sullivan. On the night of January 1, 1905, their house caught alight and Mary didn’t make it out. Isaac was found the next day and taken to hospital in Brisbane but he was terribly injured.

He died that night of burns and shock.

This morning after my shower, I came out to my kitchen and looked around.

“What do you see?” I heard myself ask.

“Mess” I replied.

“No, that’s your opinion of what you see. What do you actually see?”

“Dishes to be washed, lunches to be made, juice spilt on the table that I have to clean up, etc, etc.”

“No, wrong again, that’s your ‘to do’ list you think you see. What do you actually see?”

“Ok, I get it. I see a bench with food on it, dishes on a table. I see an oven, a sink, a light that is on. Actually now I’m looking out the window and seeing a kookaburra on the clothes line. The day is sunny too.”

“What do you hear, touch or smell?”

“I hear the kids playing, the sounds of the birds outside. I can smell the freshness of today and feel a lot more at peace having taken the opinions off what I’m experiencing.”

“That, my friend, is reality. Everything else is just judgement.”

Most of the time we live in our heads. We see life only through our PERCEPTIONS rather than the actual experience of life.

Motherhood comes with loads of challenges that we need to rationalise and find solutions for and this can cause stress. But the stress is not coming from the events, but from your perceptions – the judgements you have placed on the events.

When you take the labels away, what you are left with is an experience. You are left with what you see, what you hear, what you taste, what you smell and what you can feel – the five senses.

When you allow yourself to EXPERIENCE the situation without judgement, what you get is reality – life exactly as it is. And with that comes a sense of peace.

Over four months in and council has made good progress with the budget, integrated transport network and the soon to be released draft planning scheme. Here’s an update on a selection of projects closer to home that might be of benefit to you.

Landsborough As we speak, I am reviewing concept designs for improvements to the entry of Landsborough via Caloundra Street. It has been an unattractive sight in front of Pioneer Park for some years, but that’s about to change. The design features landscaping, entry and parking area improvements and, after consultation with locals, is expected to be implemented early in the New Year.

Peachester If you drive up to Peachester you would have noticed that you can now see the rest stop and General Store with ample distance and time to safely turn in before you’re past the turn off. It’s a great little community hub and over the years I’ve often driven past thinking if drivers had better sight-lines, more could make the decision to turn in and stop safely. After a recent meeting on site, a council crew has been out there pruning and removing vegetation and weeds from the road reserve in order to make it more attractive and safer for locals and visitors to use.

Glass House Mountains I’m pleased to say that we now have better designs for improvements to the Glass House Mountains retail precinct. It came as quite a surprise that a business in our local town was the target of a ram raid recently and council will be taking measures to reduce the possibility of this occurring again.

The improved designs will introduce more vegetation for shade and amenity and possibly additional seating. The new design will be implemented in the next few weeks – but not until I’ve caught up with affected local business owners about the plans.

Division 5 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council M: 0409 450 726 Mooloolah School Pool is undergoing minor maintenance in readiness for the coming summer season and will be open for community use outside school hours from October 15. It was disappointing to hear that this wonderful community facility was broken into over the weekend. Council’s contract with Education Queensland actually expires in November and there is some concern about the future for community access. Council is waiting to hear from Education Queensland about their plans for the facility.

The RV community are welcome visitors in our hinterland who contribute in many ways to the regional economy and diversity in the community. I’ll be attending an RV Conference in Brisbane this month with Mooloolah on my mind to find out how council can continue to ensure hinterland towns are an attractive destination for RV tourists.

Eudlo Mooloolah Community Disaster Management Group will be meeting for the first time in the next few weeks. Anyone is welcome to participate in the group, which will focus on disaster planning and preparedness in the local area. WOEIE – it’s a great name for a wonderful community festival. I’ll be at the Where on Earth is Eudlo festival on October 20 to enjoy this happy community celebration of all that’s great about Eudlo and I’m looking forward to it.

Barung Landcare is officially opening the Landsborough Nursery early in November. I’m looking forward to joining Mayor Mark Jamieson and Councillor Rick Baberowski at the opening and congratulating council, Barung Landcare and the many volunteers who have worked so hard to transform an abandoned ostrich farm into a native plant nursery.

Things 2 Do Beerwah State School’s Big Night Out!

A huge evening of fun is planned for October 19 from 3.00pm to 9.00pm when Beerwah State School is holding its annual ‘Big Night Out’. Unlimited Ride passes are able to be purchased for a cost of $30.00.

Elimbah Community Fun Day

The Elimbah Sports Ground will be jumping on Saturday, October 20 from 2.00pm – 9.00pm at their Community Fun Day which will feature fireworks, live entertainment and community displays, sports demonstrations, as well as fun rides, traditional games, live music stalls and food.

Kids both big and small will no doubt enjoy the fun rides which will include a jumbo slide, a rock wall, the cup and saucer, high flyer, a jumping castle and AFL inflatables.

Wristbands for the rides are available prior to event for $20.00 and $25.00 on the day (wristbands available from Elimbah General Store or from Kerrie 0408 881 926).

The day benefits the Elimbah community by providing a unique opportunity for Elimbah based sporting, recreation, community groups and businesses to showcase their activities to the local community. The event also allows the community to come together as one to celebrate and enjoy an affordable family friendly social event.

If you would like to expand your knowledge of our local endemic native plants, there is a Native Plant Identification Workshop on Saturday, October 13, at the Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare premises on Steve Irwin Road.

The workshop begins at 9.00am and is due to finish about 12.00noon. There is a small fee which includes morning tea.

The book, ‘Rainforest Trees and Shrubs – A field guide to their identification’, aka ‘The Red Book’, will be available for purchase so that you can practise your new found knowledge.

School holiday blues

In all the years of living in the area, we have always got behind local business, feeling the support of these businesses is paramount.

However, I ask these same businesses, please do not promote / advertise activities you do not intend to fulfil.

Upon seeing an advertisement in our great local papers, we invited our grandkids and some friends up to partake of what looked a great adventure during the school holidays, as advertised, only to be told it was a no show until the week after the holidays. Thus we were unable to avoid the School Holiday Blues, with everyone going home most disappointed.

Having run our own business in the area for many years I can assure all involved: bad news travels like wildfire, good news travels slow.

I respectfully suggest that Jaylene Musgrave (GCNews September 26), actually checks out rodeo stock or watches PBR on TV. Rodeo stock are amongst the most cared for livestock in the world. They are, for the most part, in excellent condition with shiny coats and looked after with great care. Without rodeo, most of this stock would probably be shipped out as live export where the real cruelty is abominable. If Jaylene

has the time and energy to lobby governments, live export would be a great place to start.

We are animal lovers (I have worked for RSPCA and animal shelters) and have followed rodeo for many years and love it, BUT live export sickens me to the core.

Be alert and slow down

For the second time in two months I have come across a kangaroo killed on the same stretch of Old Gympie Road between the Watson Road and Larapinta Drive turn offs. This is where the speed changes from 60 to 80kph. This time it was a young male hit on the side of the head, most likely from a car or truck. I travel this section of the road every morning and have come across roos sitting in the middle of this stretch of Old Gympie Road, as well as the two most recent deaths – both having occurred in the morning before 7.15am.

As this appears to be a common crossing point, I urge all drivers to be alert through this stretch and slow down, with speed being the biggest factor leading to death of our native wildlife on our roads.

The Meaning of Life

A recently repeated episode of the TV sitcom, Everybody Loves Raymond, has little Allie asking her father Raymond the question “What is the meaning of Life?” Instead of sticking with the topic of the birds and the bees, which Ray was trying to fumblingly cover with his pre-pubescent daughter, father, mother and grandparents fall over themselves trying to come up with an answer. One was that we are born, we reproduce, we die; that’s all. Grandmother suggests searching the Bible; surely there is an answer there. Although confident at first Marie soon discovers she can find no answers; mainly due to her lack of familiarity with the scriptures.

Frustrated, she tells Ray to phone the local church pastor. Comedy is often built on real life situations. The episode concludes with Allie happily playing with her younger brothers, wrestling on the floor, enjoying childhood fun together. the answer to “the meaning of life”. It seems we often find this question too hard. So, we move on like Allie to something else. We have little time to ponder the big questions. Who are we? Where did we come from? Why do we exist at all? What is the purpose of life? Is there any meaning to it all? The scriptures tell us that God is behind it all. We are assured that He is there for us, and that there is a plan in place for Salvation available to all. But, if our worldview does not include God, there does not appear to be any purpose in life. All the more reason to find a copy of the Scriptures at home, in the library, online, or at your local church. Reading the Word of God is always time well spent. You might even find the answer to Allie’s question.

Melaleuca nodosa – Prickly Leaved Paperbark Family – Myrtaceae As the common name suggests, this paperbark has prickly leaves. This species forms a medium to large shrub to seven metres which is effective as a screen plant.

Melaleuca nodosa is a hardy plant, adaptable over a wide range of soil types, tolerating less than perfect drainage. However, it prefers good drainage with moisture. The layered papery bark of this species is also a feature, with alternate leaves up to 40mm in length.

The leaf is linear in shape with a sharp point at the tips, which gives it its common name. The flowers occur in globular shaped clusters, are up to 20mm in size, and occur in the older stem, ranging from cream to yellow in colour, with flowering in spring. Flowering is best in a sunny position; however, the species will tolerate shade, which results in reduced flowering. The fruit is a woody knobbly capsule in 10mm clusters – and this is where it gets its botanical name, as nodosus means knobbly.

This plant is adaptable, with a range which includes the east coast of New South Wales and southern Queensland, with a few outcrops in northern Queensland. The Prickly Leaved Paperbark responds well to fertilising after flowering and an annual light prune will encourage a bushy shape. Propagation is easy from both seed and cuttings. It is also habitat for the Ground Parrot and is useful as a garden specimen.

‘The flower exposed’ at Caloundra Regional Gallery

Sunshine Coast Council presents ‘The Flower Exposed’ exhibition by local artist duo Justine and Richard Newport at Caloundra Regional Gallery from October 10 to November 18.

‘The Flower Exposed’ exhibition explores and exposes the organic sensual textures, colours and forms of the flower.

Artists Justine and Richard Newport seek the viewer’s response to their union of delicately painted large-scale subjects and intimate large-scale photographs.

Bookings are now open for a special, free, guided exhibition tour for children aged six to 14 years of age. The tour is at 3.30pm on Tuesday, October 16.

‘The Flower Exposed’ will be officially launched at Caloundra Regional Gallery on Friday, October 12, at 6.00pm. All art enthusiasts are invited to attend the launch and the artist floor talk at 10.30am on Saturday, October 13. Bookings are essential. Peachester District Horticulture Society

Contributed by Patricia Bradford Rob Morris, Jeff Bodley and Coral Beutel visited the Buderim Garden Festival and said it was great and there were some brilliant displays.

A tribute was paid to Colin Campbell. Colin was a very popular visitor to our club some years ago. He will be sadly missed.

Coral Beutel told us of problems with bandicoots digging holes everywhere in her garden and John and Pam Innes have a big problem with scrub turkeys and rats.

Results of the competition bench for August were: First – Margaret Ferris, Second – Pam Innes.

After lunch, a few members visited the Beerwah Recycling Centre. Trish Cashin showed us through the garden constructed entirely from recycled items. All the plants were salvaged from green waste and were flourishing with the addition of mulch made from the green waste. We had a sneak peek at the items for the Saturday Markets. The Recycling Centre is a real eye opener.

The next meeting will be on Thursday, October 18, at the Peachester Hall from 9.30am. Details of the next garden visit are still to be advised. Visitors are always welcome.

Beerwah Ladies Golf Club Contributed by Jenny Kelly As the weather heats up, so too does the scoring at Beerwah Ladies Golf. On Thursday we had 68 girls play for the final weekday Monthly Medal, which was once again sponsored by our Club Professional, John Mellish. Division 1 was won by Sonia Kenway with a Nett score of 71, on a count back from Mavis Brimelow, also on 71. Lea Garner took out the Gross event with a score of 86 off the stick. Betty Howe romped in with a score of 66 Nett to take out 2nd Division. Ruth Bowie came in with a 71 Nett to take the Runner Up prize. Sharon Phillips won the Gross with a nice round of 92 off the stick.

Division 3 was well won by Gail Murphy with a score of 69 Nett. Janelle Balfe was Runner Up with a score of 73 Nett. Third Division Gross was won by Margaret Goodger with105 off the stick. NTP honours went to Barb Whitfield on the 2nd, Lydia Costello on 5, Gail Gundry on 16 and Margaret Zonca was closest on 18. The Ball Rundown went to 76 nett.

by Matilda Fruit Barn. Matilda have been great sponsors of Beerwah Ladies Golf and we would like to thank them for their continued support.

Take extra care this fire season Each year fires are sparked across the state as a result of people being careless.

Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) Regional Manager of Rural Operations for the North Coast Region Peter Hollier said bushfire season was upon us and, with dry and warm conditions set to continue across the region, even a small fire had the potential to spread quickly.

“There have been instances on the North Coast where fires have been deliberately lit and people have been prosecuted for these careless and inconsiderate acts,” Mr Hollier said.

“Vacant grassland is often seen to be a desirable area to light fires because it can appear low risk and out of public view.

“Bushfire arson is a crime and no matter how big or small, it is a threat to our community, property and the safety of you, your family and friends.

“I urge residents to be vigilant and aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious activity to Crime Stoppers Queensland on 1800 333 000.”

Mr Hollier said people should also take extreme care when using power tools and machinery.

“In conditions such as this, adequate equipment should be readily available to extinguish any fire which may start and QFRS recommends having someone available, other than just the tool operator, to watch closely for ignitions which may occur.

“It is important to remember people can also be liable for any damage which a fire may cause.”

Mr Hollier reminded motorists of the dangers of flicking cigarette butts outside car windows.

“Cigarette butts are one of the major causes of dangerous roadside fires, which can be avoided if people don’t throw cigarette butts from their cars,” he said.

“The smoke haze caused by these fires has the potential to cause a serious accident, particularly on the highway, where people can be travelling at over 100 kilometres per hour.”

Mr Hollier said parents and guardians should also educate their children on the danger of playing with fire – for their safety and the safety of the wider community.

Get in the game a hit with sporting clubs The Newman Government’s Get in the Game initiative is already proving a success with clubs across Queensland, Sport and Recreation Minister Steve Dickson said today.

Mr Dickson said there had been a great turn-out to information sessions held all over the State during the past week, and almost 200 clubs had already signed up to be a part of the Get Started voucher component of the program.

“Around 520 people have attended Get in the Game information sessions already, with an impressive 95 people present at the Gold Coast meeting on Wednesday night,” he said.

“And next week is set to be even stronger, with hundreds of people and clubs already registering to attend upcoming sessions in their local area.

“Feedback from industry members has been very positive so far, with clubs saying the programs will benefit their members and help them to provide better services.”

Mr Dickson said Get in the Game, which consists of three key programs, is another way

the Newman Government is determined to ease the cost of living burden for Queensland families.

“Get Started will provide more than 40,000 vouchers of up to $150 to help with the cost of registration fees for children who are least able to afford it, or would otherwise benefit from joining a sporting club,” he said.

“Get Going will see $10,000 grants paid directly to local sporting clubs to help them grow through the purchasing of new sporting equipment or promoting new membership initiatives.

“And the Get Playing program will provide $100,000 grants for clubs to upgrade or replace existing facilities and infrastructure.”

Get Going and Get Playing are open for applications until December 1, 2012.

Applications for Get Started vouchers will officially open in January 2013, however clubs can register their interest in participation from October 1.
