Local News Businesses re-open with COVID Safe plans Since Friday, June 5 more of us have been able to head into our favourite pubs, restaurants, surf clubs and RSLs, cafés, gyms and campgrounds with the approval of COVID Safe industry plans.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said that so far, nine COVID Safe industry plans had been approved

by Queensland’s Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young, spanning industries such as retail, tourism, food services, and sport and fitness.

Health Minister Steven Miles said local cafés, pubs and gyms could now safely open to more people, and more people could take part in on-field sports.

“Venues with more space can allow up to 20 people in each separate area. For example, surf clubs, pubs and RSLs that have multiple indoor and outdoor areas, can have 20 people in each of these areas if the areas are big enough,” Mr Miles said.

“However, every venue must continue to adhere to strict social distancing rules including adhering to extra hygiene protocols.

“I’m also asking Queenslanders to be patient as their local businesses adjust to the new rules. Businesses

and staff are doing their best to help you enjoy more activities and keep safe,” Mr Miles said.

COVID Safe plans are developed by industry bodies based on best practice to allow industries to have additional customers on business premises.

Some local businesses that have been able to re-open include the Beerwah Hotel, Landsborough Hotel and Hotel Maleny. All in One Fitness and Fitness Plus started operating last week and the Beerwah Pool is opening on June 13.

The Beerwah Hotel has stopped doing take-away. The sports bar reopened on Monday, June 8 and the bistro re-opened on Wednesday, June 10. It is now open seven days a week from 11.30am-2pm for lunch and for dinner on Sunday to Thursday from 5-8.30pm and Friday and Saturday from 5-9pm.

The Hotel Maleny reopened its bar and dining last week and will continue takeaway meals for lunch and dinner. Deliveries are only available for dinner.

The Maleny RSL has also reopened for Friday night dining, with two sittings of 20 people from 4.30-6.30pm and 6.45-8.45pm,

with bookings required by phoning 5435 2672.

Landsborough Hotel are open from 10am each day and will be serving lunch and dinner in two seatings of twenty for both meal times, bookings are recommended; and they have stopped their takeaway service.

While the pubs and clubs are now able to serve food and drinks, none of the gaming areas have reopened.

Club Glass House have not reopened as yet and club manager Sharon Bochow said they are currently working their way through all of the rules, regulations and training required.

“As we are such a small venue and with the strict measures have decided not to open until the next restriction lift, with the hope it will be more business friendly,” she said.

Local News Will Beerwah ANZ ever reopen?

By Greg Brown In a worrying move, ANZ has shut its Beerwah branch for what the bank says is a temporary closure, making locals and businesses go to Caloundra to do their banking.

According to an ANZ media spokesperson, it’s because locals have stopped going into the Beerwah branch.

“Changes in customer behaviour has led to a reduction in foot traffic,” the spokesperson said.

“At the same time we are seeing significant increases in the use of our call centres, so we have reconsidered some of our branch opening hours to support customers where demand is greatest.”

Staff at the Beerwah branch have been reassigned to become call-centre operators “… in order to help customers transition to online banking and to respond to the increased demand at our call centres, including hardship assistance,” the spokesperson said.

“Our customers can access their banking 24/7 via the ANZ app or www.anz.com.au. ANZ has proactively contacted about 7,000 passbook customers to assist with their transition to debit cards and customers who wish to continue face-to-face banking can do so at our Caloundra branch.”

Although some social media comments have said that the closure is for a two-week period, with branches across the nation closing on a

rotating basis to act as call centres, this was not confirmed by the ANZ spokesperson.

When asked about the future of the Beerwah branch, the spokesperson would not confirm if it was actually going to reopen.

“ANZ continues to evaluate its branch network and no decisions on reopening the temporarily closed branches have been made.”

In the decade to 2018, ANZ closed more than 110 branches across the nation, with more branches closing since then.

During the recent royal commission into the banking sector, the ANZ chief executive Shayne Elliott said that the organisation had chosen to continue a strategy of branch closures based on customer behaviour and impact data.

When asked what considerations were taken into account when deciding which branch closes and which stays open, he explained that it’s not the financials of the branch, rather the alternatives that are close by.

This may explain the decidedly unpopular decision to close the Maleny branch in 2017 but not the February closure of the Kilcoy branch, leaving that large rural town with no banks at all.

What lies in store for the future of Beerwah’s ANZ branch is anyone’s guess.

Greens select Maleny tradie as candidate Andrew McLean, the Greens candidate for Glass House for the October 31 state election, says he came to the Greens by “following the money”, which was his objection to political parties accepting corporate donations.

"I was a Liberal-National Party voter in my youth and then an issue-based swinging voter,” said Mr McLean, who grew up in the bush at Gilgandra in New South Wales.

Having lived in South Australia, Victoria and New Zealand, Mr McLean moved to Queensland permanently 20 years ago.

“When I found out that the major parties have accepted $100 million in corporate donations since 2006, I realised that they don’t do it out of the goodness of their hearts but rather to buy policy outcomes,” he said.

“The major parties have become the servants of corporations.”

According to their policy platform, the Queensland Greens don’t accept financial donations from corporations.

Mr McLean, aged 50 and the father of three adult children, is a motor mechanic who ran a mobile business before moving onto acreage in Maleny.

He has also been an ordained Lutheran minister.

Mr McLean says he has no personal dispute with other candidates but objects to their parties’ attachment to corporate money.

“Frankly, I never thought I would vote Greens, much less stand as a Greens candidate, but I have seen the party stand up for people,

animals and the environment in a way that other parties seem to be unwilling or unable to do,” he said.

“It is time to shift the power back to the people.

Locals know best.”

The Greens believe they can win up to seven state seats and potentially hold the balance of power in the next Queensland Government.

“The big five banks made $172 billion in profit in the past four years,” Mr McLean said.

“The Queensland Greens would push to impose

a 0.05% levy on that profit, which would raise $4.6 billion for Queenslanders.

“That’s a lot of cash for local economies, hospitals, schools and public infrastructure.”

Picnicking on the precinct From overgrown weeds and grass, to bountiful open space, gardens and views, the Maleny Community Precinct has undergone a huge transformation and is the perfect place to enjoy the outdoors with family and friends.

A lot of love and hard work has gone into making the Ziza Field perfect for public use with accessible hard mowed paths through to Settlers Green from the car park close by.

Visitors can enjoy magnificent views over the precinct from shaded benches under the fig tree, or enjoy a range of casual activities in the open fields.

Volunteers have been busy planting out 20 large specimen native trees

to allow for more shaded areas in the future. Plant beds stretching 300m with butterfly attracting native plants and a grove of rare heritage camellias to wander and observe.

Maleny District Sports and Recreation Club President Mike Norman said they were already seeing picnickers, dog walkers, families throwing and kicking balls around, and outdoor exercise classes enjoying the space.

“All the things we can hoped the public would avail themselves of,” he said.

The spacious Ziza Field, when not in use for event training by the Maleny 5th Light Horse Regiment, has been kindly made available

by the troop for public use and is the perfect place to enjoy some sunshine on these beautiful winter days.

“It’s a lovely quiet spot and we want the public to know it’s open to them when the horses are not training,” said President of the Regiment, Terry Murphy.

“We’ve got families flying kites, playing frisbee and just running around, it’s a great place for everyone.”

Mike said from paddock to park, all works have been completed by community volunteers (works approved by Council), for the community.

“We’ve also been able to purchase many of the materials with local

businesses including mulch, garden edging, plants etc and employed local contractors to do any earthworks,” he said.

“MDSRC has seen its volunteers spend many months making sure the grassy field is well mown and weed-free.”

There’s more to come for the lovely new space, with plans to add more benches, plants and smaller shade trees; a small interpretive boards shelter with historical information about the area; and, once funds are raised, a children’s playground.

Business News Plan for keeping money local in Maleny Maleny will be the first Sunshine Coast region to implement a local Eftpos gift card aimed at keeping money within the township by encouraging people to shop locally and support local businesses.

The Maleny Commerce has received a $5,000 Sunshine Coast Council major grant to implement this initiative, which will work with Why Leave Town Promotions (WLT).

Maleny Commerce president Nicole Hilton said the grant would fund

the program entirely, which meant no costs for businesses to be part of this exciting new chamber program.

“Now customers can buy the local gift card and know that the funds are supporting local businesses,” Nicole said.

The potential income to Maleny businesses could be $100,000$200,000 annually.

Nicole and the chamber committee reckon there is no limit to what they will be able to do with the

card to increase income to local businesses.

It can be used by clubs as raffle prizes or by employers as Christmas gifts to their employees.

The chamber regularly runs Live, Love, Shop local campaigns and gives away a $500 Eftpos card.

Previously they had no control over where those funds were spent but now they know they will be spent locally.

Nicole said the chamber intended to promote the card in the greater Sunshine Coast region and Brisbane.

“How lovely would it be to receive a Maleny gift card to spend on your next visit to our town,” she said.

The card will not be able to be used outside of participating stores, which means that every time one of these cards is used for a purchase, the money stays local.

The card can be used in all businesses signed up to the program, which includes retail and service businesses.

“More money locally means more local people employed and more clubs being supported by

Maleny Commerce president Nicole Hilton businesses. It’s a win-win for everyone in town,” Nicole said.

“We are very excited and look forward to the upcoming launch at the end of July. This is great timing for our town especially with the current situation.

“It will be great to come out the other side with an exciting program that benefits our businesses, our residents and our town as a whole,” Nicole said.

Take me away Communing with the orangutans of Borneo Beerwah resident Jane MacGibbon recently responded to our community callout for inspiring travel related stories we could share with our readers while international travel is still on our future dreams list.

Jane has generously shared some insights into a fascinating research trip she undertook in 1986 to study wild Indonesian orangutans at the Camp Leakey Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in Kalimantan, Borneo.

Following her childhood dream of becoming a zoologist, Jane had always been fascinated by great apes and was pleased to take up the opportunity for her and her young son Tim to join Professor Birute Galdikas, a long-term researcher of wild Indonesian orangutans, and her team at Camp Leaky.

They flew from Auckland, New Zealand to Jakarta and then onto the island of Borneo, landing on a grass strip near Pangkalanbun, a tiny settlement in southern Kalimantan.

From there, they had a short drive to the town of Kumai, where they caught a longboat, steered by a couple of lads who looked about 13 years old.

Jane said the river at Kumai was huge at almost half a kilometre wide. However, after about 20 minutes they turned into one of its tributaries, the Sekonyer River, a

much narrower channel surrounded by denser rainforest.

“Very quickly we began to see wildlife moving amongst the trees and occasionally along the river edges. We’d see birds, insects, spider monkeys and weird looking proboscis monkeys.

“Our level of excitement and the adrenalin rush of moving into the unknown increased as the width of the channel decreased.

“One of the boys shouted and pointed excitedly at a large object in the trees– it was our very first wild orangutan sighting,” Jane said.

Their destination at Camp Leakey in the Tanjung Puting National Park, the largest and most diverse protected coastal tropical heath and peat swamp forest in Borneo, took another three hours to reach by river.

Jane said the area was a veritable hothouse of eco-diversity, originally declared as a game reserve in 1935 and in 1982 a national park.

“We disembarked from our longboat onto a wooden boardwalk, which disappeared into the bush.

There were no humans in sight, but sitting on the bridge was a large orangutan cradling a tiny baby. I was gobsmacked and we stood just staring at this amazing pair as the longboat disappeared back down the river,” Jane said.

This encounter was the beginning of three months research in the rainforest.

Jane said she got used to battling mosquitos, occasional tummy upsets and continual sweating from the excessive humidity, and the daily late afternoon deluges.

She also remembered going without showers (washing consisted of soaping up beside the river then jumping in to rinse off) and eating predominantly fruit, fish and lots of rice!

CWA role still relevant today GC&M News has always been a great supporter of local CWA branches.

Our recent profile articles on Del Davis and Joan Kropp, who have been QCWA members for 60 years, reminded us of the historic role the organisation has played in our rural communities for many years.

We were keen to find out how younger CWA members felt about the organisation and its relevance today and caught up with Debbie Ives from Beerwah, Fiona Gray from Peachester and Maureen Jenkinson from Maleny to get their insights.

Debbie Ives Debbie is the Beerwah QCWA treasurer and strongly believes in the ongoing relevance of the CWA. She was motivated to join the group about eight years ago, initially curious about the street presence of the Beerwah CWA building in Simpson Street.

A dressmaker by trade, she was also keen to connect with other women in the area who had creative skills. Deb appreciates the ongoing strength of the organisation as well as its sometimes overlooked political power of advocacy, which can make real changes to people’s lives. She said members like Del

Davis were an inspiration and she appreciated the often selfless agenda of many of the older members.

“I feel the CWA has definitely evolved to address broader community needs over the years,” Deb said.

“We have a strong focus on sustainability, the sharing of skills and supporting our local community in many fun and engaging ways. We are currently looking to offer a new series of sustainability workshops that have already garnered incredible community interest as well as resuming future markets and some special events.”

Fiona Gray Fiona is the branch secretary and international officer of the Peachester QCWA. She was initially drawn to the association through her friendship with an existing older member, Coral Buetel.

Fiona said that older members such as Joan Kropp and Bev Wild always encouraged the involvement of younger members as a way of keeping the association and its values, stories and traditions alive, while sharing practical skills such as knitting, crocheting and making jam.

“The genuine camaraderie of its members, regardless of age, as well as the way the association gets people throughout communities to help one another was a key drawcard,” Fiona said.

“I realised that the relevance of the CWA stretches much further than I initially thought. The association is heavily involved with interests at a local, national and international level, which can be inspiring and interesting.

“We are also looking to get involved again in more local events that provide an additional avenue of community socialising – everyone is often so busy so it’s great to provide a local event for everyone to come together.”

Maureen Jenkinson Maureen, who belongs to Maleny QCWA branch, reiterates many of the sentiments expressed by other younger members that the CWA provides a great opportunity to come together and be strong as women as well as providing valuable support and representation.

Like Debbie and Fiona she believes the CWA will benefit from the resurgence of interest in

Currently the branch is also looking to alternate monthly meetings, currently held on the first Friday of the month, between morning and evening meetings in a bid to attract new members.

Maureen believes that the CWA can provide an excellent bridge between urban and rural concerns by showcasing the resourcefulness and enterprising nature of its members, which may not have previously been fully appreciated by society.

“Lately we have been shown that an alternative way of doing things may be more viable, and the skills we can learn through CWA have a revitalised need,” she said.

“I also believe that the CWA provides a safe and supportive space for women to connect as well as providing an outlet for a political voice that can support different causes, especially providing a champion for those in rural areas and families.

“I feel we have grown well beyond the traditional perception of a bunch of ladies who bake, to a dynamic and engaged organisation that has truly broadened its horizons,” Maureen said.

Neighbours at home, and at CWA

By Sonia Clark We recently caught up with two remarkable ladies - Del Davis and Joan Kropp - who are both long standing members of neighbouring CWA branches, as well as next door neighbours now living in Beerwah.

The fact that Del and Joan have each contributed 60 years of QCWA membership - which by any yardstick is an outstanding milestone, along with the fact that they still attend neighbouring branch meetings at Beerwah and Peachester, and that they now live next to each other, was a serendipitous story in itself!

Del and Joan have known each other since the late 1980s when they would meet up at CWA functions and divisional meetings over the years.

Del has lived at Glasshouse Views retirement village since 2012, with Joan relocating to the village around 12 months ago. Both ladies expressed their pleasure that by unexpected luck they had become neighbouring residents.

Joan said that when she went to enquire about availability at Glasshouse Views, she remembered being very surprised when told the address of the unit she was looking to book into.

“When they told me the number, I remember saying that was a wonderful surprise as my very good friend from the CWA lived right next door! It’s lovely that we are neighbours now,” Joan said.

When asked about the continuing relevance of the CWA today, Del said that recent changes to everyday life as people adapted to the challenges of COVID-19 meant more people were renewing their interest in the ideas of yesteryear, as well as embracing the basics of simpler living such as home cooking, growing vegetables and craft skills.

to respond to the resurgence in community interest in skill sets that may have been lost, unknown or underutilised. She also believes the association provides a powerful and united voice, especially for women and their families, and its ability to advocate on behalf of the interests of its members, especially those from the country at state and federal level, is invaluable.

Joan said the CWA’s relevance relates to its support for not only its members but the broader community through fundraising and local, national and international relief efforts, as well as community events.

She welcomes the increased interest from younger community members who appreciate both the strong history and potentially exciting future of the CWA as they carry the association forward.

Peachester residents receive OAM Peachester dairy farmer Mr Bruce Page, and a former high-ranking public servant Ms Kerrith McDermott, have been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Bruce was awarded the OAM in recognition of his services to the community of Beerwah and Peachester, which is an extensive record accomplished over many years As well as running a thriving dairy farm for the past 60 years, Bruce has found time to become an integral part of a very long list of community organisations, events and worthy causes, including: • being a founding member of Beerwah Charity Sports Committee since 1969 and its President for the past 47 years; • a founding member of the Peachester Rural Fire Brigade, as well as its Chairman and Inaugural Brigade First Officer from 1977 2014, and a current Fire Warden; and • a long serving member (1975 1994) of the Peachester School Parent and Citizens Association.

Bruce has been a tireless worker for numerous community organisations, including the Peachester Hall Committee, Peachester History Committee, Beerwah Sports Ground Management Committee; a Committee Member in the establishment of the Beerwah State

High School; an advocate for Dairy Farmers in Queensland; and on the executive committee of the Beerwah and District Returned and Services League Club.

The Medal of the Order of Australia will compliment Bruce’s Centenary Medal presented to him in 2003 for his ‘long voluntary service to the Peachester and Beerwah communities’.

Although Bruce isn’t one to seek out the limelight GC&M News will attempt to pin him down for a story in a follow-up edition.

The other Peachester resident to receive the Medal of the Order of Australia is Kerrith McDermott.

Kerrith has been honoured for her service to public administration in Queensland.

Kerrith had a distinguished career in Queensland Corrective Services, ending up by being the Deputy Commissioner for Corrective Services Statewide Operations from 2015-2018.

Prior to that, she served as the General Manager of the Etna Creek Correctional Centre as well as the Capricornia Correctional Centre, and was the General Manager, Statewide Operations.

Previously, she has received the Queensland Corrective Services Long-Service Medal in 2002, as well as an Australia Day Award in the same year.

State election on the horizon With the state election scheduled for October 31, candidates are starting to make their presence known in the two local seats of Caloundra and Glass House.

The two major parties have had their candidates locked in for a while now, with no surprises with their names.

For the seat of Glass House, incumbent Andrew Powell will run for the Liberal National Party (LNP), with Brent Hampstead again being preselected for Labor.

The seat of Caloundra sees longterm member Mark McArdle set to retire, opening up the opportunity for the new LNP candidate in Stuart Coward. Labor has again endorsed Jason Hunt to take up the challenge.

So far, other candidates who have confirmed are Graeme Campbell (One Nation for Glass House) and

After the turmoil of the March council elections, the state polls are likely to function under new practices and systems.

The high take-up of postal and pre-polling voting at the council election changed the face of campaigning for candidates. Local voters may be in for a longer campaign period starting earlier for the upcoming state election.

This, teamed with an uncertain response of the electorate to the stresses of the COVID-19 crisis, means that results and trends from past elections may not have much bearing on the vote in October.

Hall COVID-19 report

Contributed by Helen Page Peachester Hall is usually such a busy place but, like all community halls, it has been strangely quiet for the past three months.

The hall committee is looking forward to welcoming the community back but has decided that the hall will remain closed during stage two of the plan for easing restrictions.

At present the strict conditions on numbers, physical distancing and extra cleaning and sanitising for shared spaces would make it difficult for our regular groups to conduct their normal activities.

So let’s look forward to stage three in July, when we hope life will be (almost) back to normal!

Money for jam Contributed by Glenda Galway Caloundra Evening VIEW Club member Sandra Harding has been looking on the bright side during isolation by raising funds for the club at home.

Sandra has taken donations of fruit and turned them into a range of delicious jams. Her rosella, raspberry, berry, fig and marmalade jams were eagerly snapped up by VIEW Club members, raising over $500.

Sandra feels she can now retire from the kitchen, knowing local young people will benefit from her efforts through The Smith Family’s Learning for Life Program, which supports disadvantaged students.

Although the Caloundra Club remains in recess, many other club members have been planting, sewing, quilting and knitting to create products for their next trading table.

Walking group at Mooloolah Contributed by Helen Weil After the recent COVID-19 upheaval, the Mooloolah Mob walking group has resumed walking each Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, starting at 7am for the winter months.

We meet at Martin Rungert Park, Mooloolah, right in the centre of town, and walk a variety of routes around the local area. Walking is for about an hour and it is a great way to start the day and to make new friends.

This is a National Heart Foundation group activity with certificates and awards for number of walks and attaining certain goals. Most of all it is about staying active

and healthy in a friendly social environment.

You don’t have to walk every day or for the whole hour – just do as much as you feel you can. We have our speedy walkers who cover a greater distance and we have our more relaxed walkers who maintain an average steady pace but we all walk and that is what is important.

Please consider coming along to enjoy the social aspect of belonging to a friendly group as well as the health benefits of regular exercise.

The website kidshealth.org defines divorce as what “happens after a husband and wife decide not to live together anymore and that they no longer want to be married to each other. They agree to sign legal papers that make them each single again and allow them to marry other people if they want to.” I like this simple explanation, as it focusses on the decision-making process that happens within individuals of that relationship.

I normally disagree with divorce but from time to time and case by case, I have seen genuine reasons for divorce. Like many, I have seen divorce affect my grandparents, parents and children.

There is hope though for those who desire a good marriage when we understand how relationships are formed and are maintained. I recently heard, and found helpful, the saying “Thoughts are made in the head, but decisions are made in the heart”.

I thank God for my wonderful wife who has loved me for nearly 40 years. A few weeks after we were

married, my wife asked me what love is and I stumbled out, some half-baked, romantic reply. My wife responded with an emphatic “commitment”. I disagreed with her as it seemed too simplistic and unromantic. Over time, I have come to understand and appreciate my wife’s definition.

In my experience, marriages work the best when couples make a life-long commitment to each other before God and peers. If we are to be genuine to ourselves and our loved ones, we must love in the way God loves. How do we do this?

Humanity is born “divorced” to God because we have a nature that wrongs God and others. The greatest relationship that needs restoration is ours to God. The only true love is the one that comes from God. John 3:16 says: “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (New International Version) It is only through accepting in our hearts God’s love to us that we can truly love others.

Hinterland Heritage

Local schooling in the 1870s Local records indicate the actual building was adjacent to grave number one (burial site for Edmund Lander). The building made of beech, tea wood and blackbutt had previously operated as a lodge owned by members of the local Quaker community (the Good Templers Lodge).

Mooloolah Plains Provisional School was one of the earliest schools established around our area. Opening in July 1878, the school (number 337) was originally located near the current site of the Mooloolah Cemetery to primarily cater for the families of the Glenview Mooloolah district.

During its early years the school alternated its service with the Mooloolah Bridge Provisional School established in 1879, which was located closer to the Mooloolah township.

Mooloolah Plains Provisional School opened with an enrolment of 16 students and the first teacher was Mr Thomas W Hodgson.

Local records indicate that in the early years, the school’s opening hours could be sporadic, with alternative places of temporary learning occasionally utilised.

The Mooloolah Plains School became a half time school in 1879 and was closed in 1881, with the Mooloolah Bridge School made full time in its place. The school reopened in 1883.

With the opening of the railway through Mooloolah in 1891, the settlement moved closer to the railway and Mooloolah Provisional School was opened in 1894, using desks from the Mooloolah Bridge School.

The first head teacher was Miss Ellen Elliot Brand. In later years a new school for Mooloolah would be established on the site of the

current Mooloolah Community Centre.

By around 1907, the Mooloolah Plains School had fallen into such a state of disrepair drastic action was required as the building was deemed unsafe. Around 1908, the Mooloolah Plains School moved to a new site.

A new school was built and the school’s name was changed in 1909 to Glenview after parents pointed out that the name was misleading considering its actual geographical location.

With the postal department having already established a post office in the area called Glenview, this name was deemed appropriate for the new school, and today Glenview State School retains the original identifying school number 337.

Jason Hunt Labor Candidate for Caloundra I’ve an idea about what we hope for and aspire to.

Like everyone else, I talk about it with friends and family at picnics and at barbecues (in the pre COVID-19 days), and at lunchtime at work, and a couple of things have struck me.

First, our hopes and aspirations are all remarkably similar.

Second, they’re not all that complicated.

All we are after are reasonably-paid jobs so we can support our families, a roof over our heads, access to a good education, and quality healthcare. And we want to be able to put something away for our retirement.

It’s not a lot to hope for. But for many of us, it’s a hard ask.

The fact is, we can have a better community.

For me, it all began in 2012 when my son was born. Everyone’s lives change when they become parents, I’ve discovered.

Anyway, I began looking at the world with fresh eyes.

I began thinking about Campbell Newman and his LNP government, most of who are still around today.

We had high hopes for them. We had a bag full of Sunshine Coast LNP representatives, many who were Ministers, and we thought, “at last, our turn”.

When I was young, I went to school by shanks’s pony, I went on legs, both thin and bony.

I walked two miles to the oneroomed school, Where to be seen and not heard, was the golden rule.

I carried my lunch in a bag of burnished leather, It smelled of chalk, ink and lunches gone forever.

Each school day started at nine and finished at three, Then it was home, to do the work they had set for me.

I wore patched grey shorts that reached down my skinny pegs Long socks held up with white elastic bands, upon my legs.

Blue shirt, and peaked cloth cap perched upon my head, If I was found with it off my dome, I fear I would be dead.

I sat all day at a small desk of wood, in tight rows upon the floor, A desk stained with ink from nibbed pens of kids that had gone before.

Sitting with back straight, and hands firmly clasped on the desktop, Muttering not a sound, to do so meant the strap, I would cop.

I learnt the times table with others, as I did chants in monotone rote, Should I stray from the rest, home would be sent, a damning note.

Teacher stood and wrote upon a blackboard with squeaky chalk, Without turning, named the poor child, who was tempted to talk.

Those teachers that struck terror in my heart when one came near, Teachers that were treated with respect, that comes from fear.

Some may look back with affection to those days of rigid learning, I remember, to hear the sound of the go-home bell, I was yearning.

So when someone says, school days, golden rule days, I say to them, I’m glad those days have long since gone away.

As the COVID-19 lockdown has been further lifted, we also need to play a part in the recovery so we can all return to some sort of normal.

So, remember to maintain social distancing of 1.5metres, wash your hands, download the COVIDSafe app and follow the advice of our Chief Medical Officer. Only then can we get back to normal.

I want to help build a future where my son can grow up and get a decent job right here in Caloundra. Where all local parents can watch their children grow up with the same ambition – a decent job.

I want a future where our communities are strong and resilient, where our youth are challenged, our quality of life is enhanced and our elderly cared for.

I want to be a part of a future where working together we achieve great things.

I just want to get things done.

Who knows what that normal will be but – one thing is for sure and that is we need to work together to grow local jobs.

Whether these jobs are in existing industries like construction, hospitality, health, aged care or tourism. Or whether they are in new industries, for example like a revitalised manufacturing sector or the digital economy.

Decent outcomes are achievable if we can get all levels of government working together towards the common goal of fulfilling, rewarding and permanent jobs.

The DIY approach I recently had a chat with Peachester author Sandra Poole who took the DIY approach to publishing her own children’s book that was recently featured in GC&M News entitled Banjo and the Long Ago Dog. Sandra says publishing for your own satisfaction and enjoyment can be a very rewarding creative process that also keeps the mind engaged in learning new technology skills.

For her DIY approach she delved into the Amazon Kindle publishing site, which had several free resources including templates for manuscript layout and covers. Through her Amazon/Kindle bookshelf Sandra accessed easy, step-by-step guides, tutorials and YouTube clips.

She also had the option to get a free International Standard Book Number (ISBN) through Amazon ISBN but chose to purchase independently.

Sandra says she chose to buy her own ISBN from Bower Thorpe as this allowed her to sell her book with other booksellers. She also created a separate bank account not linked to her other accounts for peace of mind with security for any sale profits.

Sandra also liked that she could edit her book at any time and refresh it to her Amazon/Kindle bookshelf.

She suggests always reading a manuscript out loud at least once,

and maybe getting a wellread friend or a local writer’s group to look over the manuscript before going live.

She says the process is then quite easy to convert the printed version into an e-book, with many authors now choosing to do this instead of publishing in print form.

“Keep in mind that you will not make a great deal of money unless you pay for the marketing side of things but this is optional, and if you get your own printed copies with your own ISBN you can market them yourself or pay someone else to do that for you. I was very impressed in how the printed book turned out,” Sandra said.

She says her experience of the process was interesting and fun, but suggests if technology is too daunting, then the traditional method of self-publishing with a professional company may be the preferred option.

“Remember, do this for your own satisfaction, have realistic expectations and have fun. You could surprise yourself!” Sandra said.

Isolation the inspiration for book

When it comes to intriguingly cool professional titles, a ghostwriter would be hard to go past, and you do not need to be a celebrity or famous person to work with one.

In many cases you just need to be an aspiring author who would like to utilise the skills of a talented wordsmith to help to authentically capture the essence of your idea.

Beerwah-based Roxanne McCarty O’Kane started offering her professional services as a ghostwriter for non-fiction books in 2018, building upon her many years of work as a journalist and writer.

Roxanne says that, in essence, a ghostwriter is someone who takes on the responsibility for writing a book for a client. She says ghostwriters can use very different processes. Some “ghosties” are given a concept and run with it, while others work with supplied content to flesh it out and keep it in the same tone as the original work.

Roxanne adopts a process that is highly personalised to engage with her aspiring authors.

“I meet an aspiring author where they are at, which means the front end of our relationship is contactheavy as I get to know their story in depth and iron out where their passions lie when it comes to underlying themes and messaging,” Roxanne said.

“Then I head into my zone and write, bringing all of it together in a powerful way that flows with ease and connects with the authenticity of what the aspiring author wants to achieve.

“The beauty of this approach is that the client does not have to write a single word. This type of approach can suit a myriad of different people in different circumstances ranging from high-powered but time-poor entrepreneurs who want to leverage a book in their

Her inspiration for the book was coronavirus. Monica said that when the world was going into

lockdown and her university was going online she knew she wanted to do something productive in her spare time “to make my dream of being an author come true and bring some joy back into people’s lives”.

If so, joining a local writers’ group may be for you.

Beerwah Writers Group is a long running group of local amateur and professional writers who meet to discuss aspects of writing and publishing in a friendly and nonjudgemental setting.

Before COVID-19 restrictions, the group would meet on the second and fourth Friday of the month in the Beerwah Library meeting room from 10am-12noon.

Group spokesperson Patty Beecham said the group currently had up to 40 members ranging in age from their early 20s to well into their 80s.

She said many members were strong writers who “wrote like warriors”, and anybody with an interest in writing was welcome to join.

Members brought a wealth of interesting real-world experience to their writing and many were published authors in a range of genres, she said.

Plans are under way to publish a compilation of short stories and poetry in the near future.

Patty said they were keen to start up again with regular meetings as soon as it was safe for members to do so.

Type 2 diabetes workshop doors reopen

Anyone who has adopted a pet knows just how much love and joy they can bring, and Mooloolah Valley resident Norma McRae can attest to this.

Norma, who volunteers at the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge (SCARS) assisting with external events and submissions to council, among many other things, has a soft spot for adopting golden oldies. She says there is a lot of enjoyment in adopting older dogs, as they have so much love still to give.

Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service health promotion officer Kerry Roach said her team had been supporting people with type 2 diabetes through online resources during the COVID-19 restrictions.

“Although this has been effective in the short term, for some people coming together in a face-to-face, group-based environment can be very supportive and empowering,” Kerry said.

“We have worked hard to ensure we can restart our face-toface workshops in a safe and supportive environment for our staff and people with type 2 diabetes.

The reason for the choice of this project being funded, according to Cr Johnston, was to expedite spending before June 30, with potentially more pressing projects across the division left off the table.

action, council has now agreed to replace most of the concrete with crushed granite, which will be less environmentally damaging, not to mention less ugly.

For years now, council has treated MDSRC as the community’s de facto representative on the precinct, as if the collective membership of its affiliates gives it that authority.

Return of dining out It has been amazing to see how innovative our local cafes have been over the past couple of months. So many have adapted and changed to meet all of the legal requirements to stay open and keep us locals with a coffee addiction supplied with our daily requirements.

After the first round of the easing of dining restrictions in May, Brownie and I went out for lunch at Mrs Brown’s Café at Beerwah, which was really great.

Business owner Julie Male and her lovely staff were obviously really happy to be welcoming diners back into the outdoor eating area.

And they did a great job explaining all of the new rules that cafés have

to follow, including completing a register of each diner’s name and contact details in case you need to be contacted for COVID-19 tracing.

As in many shops, diners are asked to enter the café via the ‘in’ and leave through the ‘out’ access. You need to use hand sanitiser before you can take a seat at the table, your order is taken at the table and the food is served to you as well.

After diners have left, the tables are cleared and cleaned down by a staff member wearing gloves.

Once you get past the process it was really nice to be able to enjoy my Turkish steak burger and Brownie was really impressed with his tender taco trio.

With time restrictions in place, the food and the coffee was served in record time and long-term staff Simon and Shelby were really friendly and patient with all their customers.

Mrs Brown’s Café is at the Beerwah Village and is open for breakfast 8am-11am MondaySaturday, on Sunday all day and for lunch from 11am MondaySaturday.

Markets are back with safety top priority If you’ve been missing your Saturday or Sunday morning trip to the markets, the good news is our local markets are starting to get up and running again.

Having to temporarily shut down due to COVID-19 restrictions, the relaxation of rules has allowed organisers to begin re-opening and welcoming back stallholders and shoppers.

Returning to trade within the parameters of the COVID-19 environment, organisers encourage the public to be vigilant and follow the rules to ensure the safety of the public. Having agreed to follow strict COVID-19 regulations, organisers implore visitors to continue to be vigilant about hygiene and social distancing while in attendance.

The Caloundra Street Fair reopened to the public recently with safety measures in place including stalls now placed further apart and in pods of four, toilets with handwashing facilities and bays with hand sanitiser throughout the market, eftpos available at all stalls, signage throughout reminding people of the requirements for visiting and staff on hand to manage crowds.

Traders and shoppers are urged to download the COVIDsafe app, ensuring Bluetooth has been activated.

Closer to home, Landsborough and Montville markets will reopen this Saturday, June 13. Witta Market will return next weekend on Saturday, June 20.

Free breast cancer screening in Maleny

Soul Qi welcomes new team member

Breast cancer is common in Australia, with one in seven Queensland women diagnosed with the disease. It’s likely you know a friend or relative who has had it.

There is currently no way to prevent breast cancer, which is why it is important to have a regular breast screen with BreastScreen Queensland. Nine out of ten women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history of the disease.

To help women in the Maleny area access a free, high quality breast screening service the BreastScreen Queensland mobile service is returning to the Maleny Hospital grounds from June 9–July 1.

Alice has completed a Bachelor of Health Science, majoring in acupuncture, at Endeavour College of Natural Health. Elected Representatives Ready, Set, Go Program with Andrew Wallace

Federal Member for Fisher I know a lot of young people on the Sunshine Coast love their home towns and want to be close to their families. However, particularly following COVID-19, many feel they must leave our community to fulfil their professional ambitions. I want to help change that perception and let more young people stay in the place they love, contributing to our region’s economic recovery.

I have decided to give a bursary of up to $1,000 to one student living in the electorate of Fisher three times a year through my new Ready, Set, Go! program. The bursary is open for applications right now from local students who are in their final year of education. The bursary will pay for whatever they need to get a leg up in the world of work.

I am passionate about apprenticeships and traineeships, which I know will be vital to our economic recovery. As such, in 2020 the bursaries will be specifically provided for students who are aiming to begin an apprenticeship or traineeship in the coming year.

You can check the website below to see what these bursaries can be used for. I expect to see applications for everything from tools for a chosen trade to training programs, and more.

As restrictions ease across Queensland, and businesses and organisations find their way forward in a changing world, inventiveness and creativity will play an important role. In truth, we cannot be completely certain what will “return to normal� and what will change for forever.

Smaller community organisations such as Lions, Rotary, CWA branches, VIEW clubs and many others have felt the weight of the pandemic.

As a member of Rotary and Lions, and through my patronage of many other organisations over the years, I have witnessed how they play an important role in the lives of their members.

With many programs and meetings suspended, members have not been able to have the same level of social connection they are used to. To add pressure, some of these organisations raise funds for larger charities across the sector but fundraising has taken a hit.

Yet continued support of fundraising by community groups for charities is still needed, perhaps more than ever. It would come as little surprise that Lions and other groups heavily rely on more traditional face-to-face fundraising such as sausage sizzles, tin shaking and raffles. Because they often fundraise through third party venues such as grocery stores and shopping centres, which they have no control over, how will this continue?

Organisations may need to change or find ways to adapt to new safety standards. More importantly, it is up to the community to think about how we support charities that receive funds from community groups so we can continue to help people in need.

Glass House main roads tour I was recently privileged to host the Shadow Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Steve Minnikin, in the Glass House electorate to do a problem roads tour. We visited and discussed Maleny-Kenilworth Road, Maleny-Stanley River Road, the intersection of the D’Aguilar Highway and Campbells Pocket Road in Wamuran, Mount Mee Road in Ocean View, Caboolture River Road, Beerburrum Road, the intersection of Landsborough-Maleny Road and Mountain View Road in Maleny and, finally, MalenyMontville Road. It was great to bring the Shadow Minister up to speed on the many roads in our area that have been neglected by the government, despite my many emails, phone calls, petitions and surveys calling for upgrades.

We also had a chance to discuss the Matthew Flinders Memorial at Beerburrum, which has sadly had its plaque recently stolen ‌ again.

The entire memorial will need to be removed to make way for the North Coast rail duplication in the near future, and I’m working with Celebrate Glasshouse Country to plan a new, more significant memorial elsewhere. We’re thinking that it might be nice to put it at the Glass House Visitor Information Centre. What are your thoughts? Do you have any suggestions for other locations that might be better suited?

More hamper giveaways We all know and love Maleny Dairies but did you know how generous they are? They’ve previously donated milks, custards and creams for me to give away in hampers and have recently teamed up with Maleny Black Angus Beef to do it all again.

I recently delivered ten hampers to lucky families in Maleny, Stony Creek, Woodford, Wamuran, Elimbah, Glass House, Peachester and Mooloolah Valley. Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards nominations 2020 has been unlike anything the Sunshine Coast has experienced before and the community response has been remarkable and wide ranging, which is why council has opened nominations for the 2021 Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards earlier than usual.

Grant Funding More than $63,000 in grant funding for Division 1 At the May ordinary meeting, council endorsed the latest round of major community grants, which included more than $63,000 for Division 1. Funding will go to support our many wonderful community groups including Landsborough Cricket Club, Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed, Nungeena Aboriginal Corporation for Women’s Business and many more. Local project funding with Winston Johnston

Division 5 Sunshine Coast Council Budget preparation under way Now the seven weeks of induction, briefings and councillor training is almost at an end, the next few weeks will be taken up with preparing the Sunshine Coast Council budget for the 202021 financial year. I’m also looking forward to the further easing of COVID-19 restrictions so I can get out and about to meet residents, businesses and community groups in each of the communities of Division 5.

Salary freeze At the May 28 ordinary meeting, council resolved to freeze councillor salaries and decline the automatic indexation from June 30.

Local projects boosted 80 local projects throughout the Sunshine Coast Council area have now benefitted from $515,000 of community grant funding. Nine Division 5 community groups have received funding. Please go to council’s website www. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au for all the details.

Montville residents and visitors have a fun, bright and lively new look to their beloved Russell Family Park.

The nature-based inspired playground features an inviting cone-structured playground standing just shy of 10m tall, with butterflies eclipsing the tip of the equipment. The playground also features a spinner bowl, waterlily spring toy and slippery slide suitable for children aged 2-12+ and of all abilities.

The 75,000m2 recreational park now features new rock seating walls, colourful artwork and interweaving pathways for parents and children to enjoy the natural surroundings.

Sunshine Coast Council endorsed the Russell Family Park Master Plan in 2001 after the community expressed the need for a welcoming space and additional car parking, which has been progressively implemented.

Division 5 councillor Winston Johnson said the park and green open space were great places for families, friends and visitors to enjoy almost anytime. “It was really important for council to complement the existing character of Russell Family Park and create a place that actively connects us to our environment – giving our children the opportunity to explore the outdoors and build on their social skills,� Cr Johnston said. “I really like how the park offers nature and landscape play activities, with large grassy hills, mature trees, an environmental walk and a range of wildlife for children to experience.�

Parents and carers are reminded that playgrounds are open to a maximum of 20 people at one time and strict social distancing must be followed. Stay 1.5m apart and stay at home if you are unwell.

Local dance school, The Dance Academy, was fortunate to be able to adapt quickly and effectively during the COVID-19 restrictions to continue to offer a range of classes online and outdoors.

Principal teacher Dawn Burman said the feedback from parents and students over the past few months had been fantastic, and she was very pleased that the academy was able to smoothly transition to online accessibility to allow students to continue engagement with their dance family.

“We were very lucky to be able to offer online classes the very next day after restrictions came into effect, as we had been prepared for the likelihood of everything closing,” Dawn said.

“We were able to offer Zoom classes straight away from the studio in Landsborough by setting up a laptop, and rearranging my house to incorporate a dance studio and separate studio space in the spare room,” she said.

The dance school was able to offer more than 50 classes a week ranging from ballet, jazz and tap to contemporary and hip-hop

through utilising the three separate locations.

Dawn said the feedback from families was that it had been really nice for the kids to have some normality, especially when they weren’t able to attend school, and loved being able to continue to see their friends and have a chat online.

“We made sure we started every online lesson with a chance for the students to catch up with each other first and socialise before commencing the lessons,” Dawn said.

The academy also created an additional online platform with extra tutorials and lessons for those who were unable to stream live lessons.

In recent weeks, outdoor classes have been offered at the Maleny Showgrounds and now the dance school is starting to transition back to in-studio classes. However, Dawn said they will combine the studio lessons with their online platforms and offer personalised options to cater for the ongoing needs of all students. Personalised learning, inspiring opportunity Now in its third year, Maleny Independent School (MIS) offers a progressive and holistic approach to education, that honours the individual needs of learners, through years 7 to 10.

Principal Angie Kelly said that acknowledging the unique needs of the adolescent learner was crucial to a successful learning journey.

“The mainstream system is based on a model that dates back to the industrial revolution and it is not serving many young people.

“Their experience is largely one of being pushed through a hefty curriculum with little opportunity to develop a love of learning, embrace

their innate curiosity about themselves and the world around them, and discover their passions. At MIS, we strive to change all that,” she said.

There is one facilitator for every 10-12 learners, so everyone gets a high level of support to achieve their individual learning goals.

A personalised learning approach means that it is not a one-size-fits-all experience at school. Learners are encouraged to have a voice in their learning and set expectations for the way the school community works.

Embedding innovation in the way the curriculum is delivered is also a way to improve engagement and learning.

This year the school partnered with Chris Bond, a chef at a local restaurant On Obi, to run the food technology sessions. Each week learners went to the restaurant to learn about food safety and preparation under Chris’s expert tuition.

“Having a clear sense of purpose in learning also helps to engage young people at school,” Angie said.

“Getting learners involved with projects and focusing on real-life

skills contributes to building a sense of ownership of learning and aims to bring enjoyment to education.

“The design of the education program allows learners to feel that school is more relevant, important and prepares them in a way that has meaning for life outside school,” Angie said.

The school encourages and supports a diversity of pathways to meet the individual needs of each learner as they progress through high school, such as TAFE in Schools, school-based apprenticeships and VET. MIS also focuses on the social and emotional wellbeing of learners, with sessions on communication skills, bullying, brain development and more.

Addressing social and emotional needs allows for a more enjoyable and meaningful learning environment.

In the Garden Maintaining timber furniture Timber outdoor furniture is becoming more popular and is admired for its feel and weathered features.

It’s not only functional but can be located in the garden as a décor feature. Function and beauty garden designer’s dream.

Selecting the right piece of furniture is usually based on appearance, timber type, usage and functionality.

Over summer, you’ve probably given your outdoor timber furniture a hard time … so now is the time to show it some TLC. There are three main timber types, which require some care.

Kwila refers to exotic timber. This timber can be left outdoors to

weather with minimal care, slowly ageing to a beautiful silvery grey colour while maintaining its smooth texture. Kwila will, however, need to be bled, a process of wetting the timber to release excess colours that may stain clothing, decking and paving.

Teak comes mostly from Vietnam.

It is lighter in colour and is the most attractive when left untreated to age into a natural colour.

Jarrah furniture comes from the Western Australian gum tree (Eucalyptus marginata). The natural timber colour varies from light pink to dark red. When aged, jarrah turns silver grey but can be kept to its original appearance with maintenance. Jarrah does not need to be bled. Generally more expensive than the other two types of timber, Jarrah has a reputation for quality and exceptionally well made furniture.

Shortly after purchasing any new garden furniture tighten all screws.

Apply a timber protection coating if you do not want the aged look.

Each timber will have a recommended treatment product – it’s best to follow the

manufacturer’s instructions.

However, if it’s old furniture you’re looking after, it’s best to give it a good wash down with a timber cleaning product. Let the timber totally dry before applying any treatments.

All three timbers can be treated using a good quality oil-based timber treatment product. Lightly brush it on or use a rag and rub it in. Let it dry between coats, and apply two or three coats in total.

How to bleed kwila Place the furniture on a grassed area upside down.

Hose the item and keep moist for about one hour. Runoff water will appear light brown.

Flip furniture right side up.

Continue to hose and moisten the furniture as before.

Maintain moisture on the furniture until droplets of water are clear.

You might need to do this every day for a few days.

Once totally dry re-oil the furniture.

It is the strong UV light of our Australian skies that damages

outdoor timber furniture by drawing out the protective oils from the wood.

Furniture that is under cover will only need a light re-oiling once a year, while furniture in direct sunlight will need a thorough going over once or twice a year.

This will involve a rub down with light sandpaper to remove any surface mould and grime, then apply at least two coats of a protective oil.

Furniture around a pool may have to be retreated three or four times a year.

An open sprawling shrub growing up to 3m tall and up to 2m wide, the velvet leaf or Callicarpa pedunculata is an excellent addition to a garden, either as a feature plant, screen or border plant. It is also a great shrub to plant in areas being cleared of lantana, which it superficially resembles.

The natural habitat for this plant varies from dry rainforest to the edges of subtropical rainforest and it is found throughout Queensland and New South Wales. A hardy bush that will grow in a range of soils from clay to sand, and in light shade or sunny spots, this shrub does need regular watering and does not tolerant frosts.

Also known as a beautyberry, velvet leaf is great for attracting pollinators and wildlife. It produces cascades of tiny pinkish-mauve flowers in October-November and stunning glossy purple berries that ripen in late summer to early autumn that catch your eye as you walk through the bush. These fruit are a delicacy loved by many native animals and birds, including Lewin’s honeyeaters and silvereyes. This bush provides habitat for small bush birds, such as willie wagtails and finches, which often build their nests among its branches.

Velvet leaf has a long history of medicinal use. The leaves stop cuts from bleeding and prevent infection. A tea made from the leaves has been used to treat fever and pain. The leaves historically have been dried and smoked to treat asthma, and used as a poultice for boils and ulcers.

Beerwah gardeners win local gardening competition

By Jennifer Kent It seems gardeners in Beerwah are some of the best in our region. But we can’t say we’re surprised to hear that.

Earlier this year Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Coast and Hinterland ran their inaugural gardening competition for the coast and hinterland. The competition was open for residents within the 4551 postcode, as well as Glass House Mountains, Beerwah and Peachester.

Out of the five competition categories, which included Best edible garden (judged), best courtyard garden (judged), best themed garden (judged), most colourful garden (judged) and people’s choice, it was Beerwah residents who were the clear winners, taking out three of five the categories.

As fellow hinterland residents, we wanted to share our neighbours wins with our readers and showcase their beautiful gardens to those who may not have seen them.

Out of so many amazing entries it was Katrina Odgers’ flourishing garden which took home the people’s choice award (which was determined by the number of likes on the BH&G Real Estate Facebook page).

Truly a labour of love, it was only a mere four years ago that Katrina’s yard was just grass. Having moved from her large block across the border, she brought with her a few roses and cuttings from her acre garden, and started fresh.

“I started out with one garden of roses and a few cuttings, and

slowly they got bigger,” explained Katrina.

“As one bed started to overflow, I’d take cuttings and transplant to another garden bed.

“I now have over 60 coleus, 50 roses, 15 fruit trees and a variety of herbs and vegie plants all mixed in between.”

Katrina explained that her children have been a source of inspiration for her gardening. Now ten and five, they’ve helped her select a variety of plants and vegetables, and will often help her out in the garden, along with her free-range guinea pigs and chooks (which often get a ride on the back of a toy truck with her five-year-old).

With gardens covering her 800m2 block, there’s plenty to keep her busy.

“Some days are for weeding, some days are planting, and some days are simply for sitting and enjoying,” she said.

As for her favourite part of the garden? “It’s a bit like choosing your favourite child – you can’t!”

Katrina’s focus is now on her front garden, and working with her established gardens consolidating them with more of a theme in mind. And with her background in visual design, we can’t wait to see what she does next.

Fellow Beerwah residents Cheryl and Ian Peut were originally nominated by their neighbour and were judged the ‘best edible garden’ in the competition.

Cheryl said they were delighted to have won, having made some big changes to their gardens over the last five years.

“I have always been a gardener and find being out in the garden be very therapeutic,” said Cheryl.

“At the moment we have silverbeet, carrot, snow peas, lettuce, cucumber, zucchini, Katrina Odgers

beans and herbs in our edible garden beds, but it all depends on the time of year.”

Cheryl explained when they purchased their home five years ago, while the garden was lovely, it wasn’t quite manageable for them and they’ve added plenty of their own character over the years to their outdoor spaces, including the addition of Cheryl’s orchard houses.

And some advice from the winning gardeners to the novice gardeners out there (read: me) who aren’t sure where to start with edibles, Cheryl says beans and herbs are a great start, and lettuce – but keep the water up. A handy tip from Cheryl: when buying shallots at the supermarket, rather than keep the leftovers in the fridge, pop them in the garden and you can pick them fresh whenever you need.

I know I find a themed garden an incredibly daunting project, but that’s not the case for Michael and Andrea McDonald, who won ‘best themed’ in the competition. After excavations on their property, the couple were left with thousands of rocks and set about moving them all over their property by wheelbarrow, making terraces, garden edges and paths to create their tropical paradise. The McDonald’s garden is full of texture and colour, with paths leading throughout their property, carrying on their theme from one section to the next. An amazing feat!
