Hi Everyone Hi Everyone Well this is one very full edition – with plenty of stories and snippets of what is happening locally. With the Glasshouse Country Festival being kicked off next Sunday with the Sustainability and Garden Expo at the Beerwah Community Hall and Turner Park there will be plenty happening locally to keep everyone busy. Inside this week’s edition you will find a fold out program which gives you an overview of what is happening at the expo, with this year’s extensive program of workshops and talks. On the back page of the program you will see a listing for the rest of the events – at this stage there are 25 other events included that will happening right up until June 10. There was way too much information to include on the program so to get the complete picture you really need to check out the Website at www.

This is the first year this type of combined festival has been held in Glasshouse Country and it looks like all the hard work of the organising committee has paid off!

Gowinta’s poisoning scare The Sunshine Coast’s largest strawberry farmers Gowinta of Beerwah confirm last week that an attempt was made to poison the farms' 170 acre strawberry crop.

Gowinta Farms identified a breach in its security Tuesday with tests currently underway to reveal exactly what poisons were used. Leonard Smith, Managing director of Gowinta Farms is horrified at the thought someone could try and ruin the livelihood of not just his families’ farm, but the 350 + workers who flock to Gowinta Farms for seasonal work. “We’ve truly dodged a bullet. I’m pleased the staff I have working for me are meticulous with their daily water tests and noticed the breach in security before any damage was done,” he said. “This isn’t some petty crime; this could have resulted in a serious threat to life and livelihood if not detected.” Beerwah Police were notified of the incident on Wednesday, May 18, but are awaiting lab reports and any potential leads from Gowinta Farms security vision. Gowinta Farms experienced a similar incident in 2009 after their entire green house crop of tomatoes and cucumbers were deliberately poisoned. Since that incident the entire farm was fitted with security cameras and infrared devices to deter criminal acts of this nature. “We’re sifting through hours of security vision which we hope will aid police in their enquiry and

Local business man Kel McNamara has joined three other candidates who have put themselves forward as candidates for next year’s local government elections. Kel said the decision to enter the race for the Division 1 councillor was not one he has made lightly. “My love and dedication to the region, my commitment to ensuring it continues to offer balance and lifestyle for my family, will ensure that I will always have the best interests of this region at heart,” Kel said. Although he was born and brought up in Brisbane where he trained as a fitter and service technician, his long term connection with the Glasshouse Country region was developed after meeting wife Lorraine (daughter of local pineapple farmer George Morgan) in 1973. Kel established his own Petroleum Installation business on the Gold Coast and while living there he joined the Currumbin Volunteer Air Sea Rescue. He went on to spend the next 18 years skippering the rescue shark cat and serving on the executive committee. His long service to this organisation also earned him Life Membership to the club. In 1994 the family decided the time had come to return to Glasshouse Country. With the help of a childhood friend, Kel established an LP Gas business and in 1999 registered business name KLM Energy Services. From here the business has steadily grown and prospered and now employs Kel’s wife Lorraine, son Callan full time with Callan’s wife Narelle,

daughter Kele-Jane and her fiancée Tyler part time, in addition to four full time staff. This family run business now proudly boasts close to 7,000 customers and it continues to grow each year with plans to employ more locals. Kel has maintained an association with the local Business Association and Chamber of Commerce organisations since 2002 and in 2006 he was elected to the position of President, a position he still proudly holds today. Although Kel has decided not to seek re-election at the Annual General Meeting in August so he can concentrate on his council campaign. Kel would like to invite community members to come and meet him and share their ideas with him and get to know something of his vision for the region. The Silver Garden If every cloud has a silver lining, then for Glass House Mountains resident Kym Gilbert, 43, who has terminal cancer, the silver is the community spirit shown on Saturday, May 14 when family, friends and strangers alike gathered to help finish her garden. “The plants are just beautiful,” said Kym, “it looks gorgeous.” It was Kym’s close friend Kerry, who organised the garden make-over. Kerry told friends and they told friends of friends and from there it snowballed. Businesses and community groups also came on board. “There would have been 40 to 50 people here at any one time. People would come and go throughout the day. I was sitting there totally

The makeover crew mind blown by the community spirit,” Kym said. Kym was diagnosed with bowel cancer in the middle of last year. She underwent surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Soon afterwards doctors found a 4cm brain tumour for which she had more radiation treatment and surgery. Early this year it was discovered she also has back cancer. ‘Battler’ is a word she would use to describe herself but despite everything she has and is going through she has a positive attitude that amazes people. “It flows on to other people,” Kym said. “If I’m going to be miserable and sulky and blame the world for my cancer, then everyone around me is going to be miserable. I want everyone to remember that I was still cracking jokes. You’ve got to keep a positive attitude whether it’s cancer you’ve got to battle through for now, or whether it’s going to be terminal. The only thing I’m annoyed with is losing my license because I love my car – I love my beast.”

It’s the concern for her kids, a son, 21, and daughter, 22 that is uppermost in her mind, but she knows they will have plenty of family support. There is only one other dream she has that hasn’t yet been fulfilled: to see the backyard pool that started being installed in 2005 actually get completed. “It needs to be drained, acid washed, and painted, and then it could be filled,” she said. After all these years, Kym would love to have a swim in her own pool. “That would be heaven,” she said. It is important to Kym that everyone who helped with her garden make-over knows how thankful she is. Dominic and fellow educators and travellers to NASA, Stuart Maish and Emily Verrall, preparing to launch some water bottle rockets Beerwah State School Year 4 teacher, Dominic Taylor, is looking forward to spending 12 days at the US Space and Rocket Centre’s Space Academy for Educators in Huntsville, Alabama, and on his return, sharing his new knowledge and resources with local teachers and students. Along with two other self-confessed rocket buffs, Dominic is excited to be in the US when the Space Shuttle Atlantis makes its final mission, hoping to visit Cape Canaveral after the Space Camp experience to watch the space shuttle land. The Space Camp trip is about boosting science education and the NASA project has been organised by the University of the Sunshine Coast. Dominic, along with Delaney’s Creek State School principal Stuart Maish, and USC Education student Emily Verrall of Buderim were selected for the trip from a large number of applicants. From July 5 - 16, they will take part in activities that astronauts and NASA support crews go through in their training, before returning to the Coast to share their experiences, knowledge and new resources with other teachers. The trip to Space Camp (the US Space and Rocket Center’s Space Academy for Educators) in Huntsville, Alabama, has been funded by Nambour Rotary Club, Education Queensland’s Science and Engineering Education Centre and USC. Activities are likely to include building and launching rockets, taking part in anti-gravity and G-force simulations, flying jet propulsion jackets, attending lectures by astronauts, and viewing real and replica space shuttle equipment. Mr Taylor, 40, has had stars in his eyes for decades. In his earlier years as a teacher in Central Queensland, he worked as a Star Lab facilitator, guiding students from various primary schools through a giant, inflatable planetarium. He currently teaches a unit in force, motion and rocketry at Beerwah State School, which is part of a network of local primary schools that will benefit from his Space Camp experiences. “I’m looking forward to the trip on a number of levels, but particularly building collaboration with other teachers and educators locally and from around the world and to continue those relationships in my teaching,” he said. Maleny Show is all the go (June 3 - 4)

One of the longest established events on the Range will take place at the Maleny Showgrounds on June 3 - 4 when The Maleny Show Society presents the 74th annual show. With a history dating back to 1923, the first Show was held The ‘Cops in Kilts’ band appearing at the Maleny Show on April 23 on the same site. We feel sure that the early committee would be proud of the way the Show has changed and developed through time. There were some years that the Show was not held due to drought, the depression, the War and even flood but the committee is steaming ahead with their plans for a fine weekend. A first for the Maleny Show this year will be performances by the Royal Australian Navy Band on Saturday, June 4, as well as performances by the Queensland Police Cops in Kilts Band on Friday, June 3. Other great entertainment includes motor cycle stunt riders, Fireworks on Friday night, and the Rodeo on Saturday night. Highlights also include The Spectacular Rings of Fire Event, Electronic Cow Demonstrations, Pavilion Exhibits, Beef, Dairy and Poultry Exhibits, Aboriginal Dancers, Flag Drill Teams, Horse events and show jumping, Dog Agility and Barrel Racing, Reptile Pit, Puppet Show, Fashion Parades, Woodchips, Sideshow Alley, and much more. Great entertainment on Saturday afternoon will be the Sommer’s Fuel Gumboot Ironman competition. This event creates a lot of laughs from not only the audience but the competitors as well as they move hay bales, push wheelbarrows, climb fences and the list goes on. Trevor and Maree Sommer have been generous with their sponsorship over the past few years and it is the wonderful spirit of community businesses that will ensure this year’s Show is bigger, brighter and more fun for the whole family. Take a ride back in time

If you’ve ever wanted to travel on a steam train, here’s your chance.On Saturday, June 4, a genuine, heritage steam engine and wooden carriages will take passengers back in time as they travel between Glass House Mountains and Landsborough as part of the wider Glasshouse Country Festival. The steam train will set off from Roma Street station in Brisbane and reach Glass House Mountains railway station at 10.40am. Passengers can elect to take a coach tour of heritage sites in the Glasshouse district or continue on to Landsborough at 11.00am. Local patrons can step aboard at Glasshouse and enjoy a return trip to Landsborough. Alternatively, passengers at Landsborough can travel south to Glasshouse, departing from Landsborough at 11.45am, and leaving Glasshouse for the return journey to Landsborough at 12.30pm. The coach tour of heritage sites in the district will include Glasshouse Interpretative Centre; the Teamsters Hall of Fame and Bankfoot House in Old Gympie Road; the Beerwah Lions Club Art and Artisan Show; and, in Landsborough, the Museum, the markets and the World War 2 bomb shelter.The coach tour includes lunch at Glasshouse Mountains State School. The coach will return passengers to Glass House Mountains railway station for the steam train back to Brisbane, departing at 3.40pm. The tour is being organised by the Australian Railway Historical Society – Queensland Division. Tickets for a return trip Glass House Mountains - Landsborough cost $20.00 adults and $10.00 children aged four to 15 years. Improving traffic flow and flood immunity are the driving forces behind a bridge replacement on Whites Road, Landsborough. Sunshine Coast Council is set to replace the current single-lane timber bridge on Whites Road with a double-lane concrete bridge. Division 1 Councillor Anna Grosskreutz said the $670,000 project would include realignment of the approach road from the east to improve safety. “The new bridge will also be raised by approximately one metre to improve its flood immunity,” she said. “The old bridge will stay open to traffic while works are in progress because the new bridge is being built off the existing road alignment.” Cr Grosskreutz said a number of trees would

need to be removed to allow for construction of the new bridge. “The Department of Environment and Resource Management has given council approval for the removal of trees as required and to offset this impact, council will revegetate the site of the old bridge and the old road when the new bridge is complete,” she said. The project is due to start in the week commencing May 30 and completion is anticipated within 12 weeks (weather permitting). During construction, property access may be affected for short durations. Council officers will contact residents, where relevant, to discuss timing for access or parking if work is likely to block entrances.

Jake’s gift

It’s every parent’s worst nightmare to lose a child, and sadly Tracey Cahill from Beerwah knows that heartache. In 2007 she lost her son Jake, a twin to sister Aylah, at the age of just 52 days to the condition Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM), an incurable disease of the heart muscle. A few months later Tracey realised an important thing. “I can’t have lost him for nothing,” she said. That was the beginning of Jake’s Gift which Tracey founded in 2009. Jake’s Gift is a not-for-profit organisation that provides many things including Memory Keepers so that families who have lost a child in hospital can keep mementos in a special container, financial assistance for families, comprehensive information packs on paediatric cardiomyopathy and practical support to families, as well as promoting awareness of this incurable heart disease. A disease that is considered rare in infants, unpredictable, and can appear at any stage in anyone’s life regardless of age, gender and race. Tracey said that at the time Jake was ill there was no information at all, which made her aware how important it is for other parents to have information available. Jake’s Gift held their first major fundraiser on Wednesday, May 18, a Movie Night at Maroochydore which was a huge success raising $2,200 for the charity. This will ensure they are able to purchase 3,000 more Memory Keepers which will be distributed to major hospitals across Australia. “It’ll never mend their hearts but we’ve received a few emails to say, ‘we’ve got one’, and they love them,” Tracey said. Tracey has also received feedback from the hospitals saying the Memory Keepers are a treasured item and that they have been very, very warmly received. The Shane Stewart Memorial Fishing Competition which runs June 10, 11 and 12 is open for registrations from June 10. Founded by the Stewart family in memory of Shane, a passionate fisherman who was killed in a boating accident in Pumicestone Passage in 1999, the Caloundra Lining up in support of the Shane Stewart Memorial Coastguard takes Fishing Competition – Sacha Palmer, Lucy Palmer, responsibility for Tom Palmer and Joel Perry, nieces and nephews of the the competition late Shane Stewart which has Open and Junior sections. Prizes are awarded to the best catch in the species with nine species recognised this year in the Open section and four in the Junior section. Spot prizes are also awarded and a draw to win one of the three Viking Kayaks is conducted for the Open section for registered competitors and a draw to win one Viking Kayak is conducted for the Junior section registered competitors. With Competitors fishing from late Friday to early Sunday, they may progressively weigh-in their catch over that time. Adherence to Queensland Fishing Regulations is monitored by an officer of the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries. Now in its third year, the search to find Queensland Red Nose Day Heroes has thrown the spotlight on unsung heroes doing great things to save babies and help guide families through their grief with professional and accessible support. Red Nose Day heroes might be social workers, psychologists, counsellors, doctors or specialists, midwives, peer supporters, health workers, allied health workers, volunteers or anyone else who has made a significant contribution in one or more of these areas. A great night was had by the 30 or so people who attended the inaugural Glasshouse Mountains Musos Club at the Sports Club recently. Among the performers were Duo Classique, who included a magical performance of Leonard Cohen’s 'Hallelujah', the rich harmonies of Champagne, Leanne Zadkovitch, who shared five originals with us - which we’ll look forward to hearing again. Paul Fagan showed what a versatile singer / guitarist he is, there were also a number of more than competent backing musicians who willingly got up to support us (thank you Neil for your harmonies and bass), and yours truly who presented some foot tappin’ ‘swamp rock’. There is little opportunity in the region for musicians to publically perform, meet their peers and develop their skills in a friendly non competitive environment. So if you’d like to get up or just see what other musos are doing, you’re encouraged to come along to the next night on Thursday, June 16, between 7.00pm and about 10.00pm. And if people bring a couple of extra chord and lyric charts with them, they are sure to find a few willing backers. We encourage all styles of music, but with an emphasis on folk, blues, world, jazz and all forms of improvisation, country, bluegrass and theatre music. Census collectors still needed

The next national census of population and housing will be conducted on Tuesday, August 9 this year. In Queensland the ABS needs 5,500 census collectors to help count every person in every suburb and town on that day. If you’re looking for a bit of exercise while helping your community and you like working in the fresh air, the Australian Bureau of Statistics has a job for you. The ABS is looking for collectors to visit householders and collect information. Queensland census director Sally Pritchard said these jobs suit anyone who cares about their community and is looking for a bit of extra money. "We need people to help out in all corners of the state,” Ms Pritchard said. Census collectors will be employed from July 1 to September 8 and will earn between $1,300.00 and $2,800.00. From the Schools Unity Team competes in Bond Mooting Competition Contributed by Mrs Amanda Paton, Legal Studies Teacher The Bond Mooting competition is the most challenging mock trial competition in Queensland. Last week, Unity College students, Phoebe Jones (Senior Counsel), Emma Connell (Junior Counsel) and Jamie Brown (Instructing Solicitor), presented a convincing submission to the judges at the Administrative Appeals Tribunal in Brisbane. Our team represented the Students compete at the Mooting trials respondent in an appeal case involving looting and grievous bodily harm. It was our task to convince the appeal judges that the original trial judge was correct in his application of the law and in finding the defendant guilty. This was no simple feat! However, Phoebe and Emma both performed extremely well under pressure and fended off some curly questions from the judges. Their court speaking skills were exceptional and they presented valid and convincing arguments that disputed what their opposition, Brisbane Boys Grammar, were suggesting. Well done Phoebe, Emma and Jamie!

For generations Aboriginal people have used song, dance and music to teach their customs and traditions to children. In the year 2011, music students of Glasshouse Country Christian College found that this was still the best way to learn about the Aboriginal culture. Lewis Parter, whose heritage is of the Central Queensland Daranbal people, visited GCCC to present his culture through song, guitar, and the didgeridoo. Mr Parter encouraged the students to forget they were in school to learn. Instead, he taught them to experience learning with joy by singing and moving. The children loved it! Jack said, “I really liked his singing and the way he made so many sounds on the didgeridoo.” Oskar said, “learning about totems was really interesting.” Annabelle was surprised at how interesting learning about another culture was. The students were also keen to ask questions about a wide variety of issues including the Stolen Generations and how to live off the land, while still having respect for the environment. Mr Parter is passionate about teaching young people a better understanding of his people and believes his presentations allows for a ‘softer’ approach to reconciliation. He visits about 200 schools every year and presents his message to anyone willing to listen and learn. The GCCC students were left with the spirit of Australia singing in their hearts and minds. Lions Club Beerwah Lions club in its involvement with the Rotary club’s Glasshouse Country Festival, is not only running a competitive art show in June, there is also a beautiful watercolour painting to win as a raffle prize. Local Artist Joy Joyce has generously donated a watercolour painting titled ‘Egrets on Tibro’ to help raise funds for the Lions Childhood Cancer Foundation. Over 600 children in Australia are diagnosed annually with three dying per week. Lions want to research a cure to save our children. Most people do not go untouched without knowing some family member or friend with cancer challenges; Joy is one who has been touched. Beerwah Writers Group At our recent meeting we concentrated on evaluating 10 short stories that were presented by members all writing on common theme – capital punishment. Betty, Shirley, Trevor and John all chose historic stories respectively from Jamaica, Tasmania, and Scotland. Martin wrote a ‘shaggy dog’ story set in Gibraltar and ending with a pun. Viki emphasised the drama of death with ‘The Trapdoor’. Anneke took us into dark emotions. Wil’s tale of ‘Judicial Killing’ gripped everyone’s imagination, and Kate’s story of ‘The Gibbet’ described the last minute feelings of a young boy as he approached his final breath. Paul introduced a sardonic account of a horse and four condemned men. Eric’s story, ‘The Tree’, portrayed the thoughts of a tree on the day that it died. David had a light-

The eclipses are here again – the New Moon in Gemini on Thursday, June 2 is a solar eclipse, and the Full Moon on Thursday, June 16 is a total lunar eclipse. Unusually, we will experience a further solar eclipse with the New Moon in Cancer on Friday, July 1. These eclipses mean that the month of June is likely to be a time of intense changes, especially for anyone with the signs Gemini or Sagittarius strong in their birth chart.

The Great Ocean Road in Victoria gives the traveller access to some spectacular scenery. At the Grotto, several flights of steps lead to a sinkhole and a view of the ocean through the window that has been eroded by wind, rain and surf. Low tide allowed the pool to remain calm, except for ripples caused by the wind. It was an overcast day softening the shadows. The rocks in the foreground lead the eye to the pool and out to sea, from where it returns to explore the rest of the rocks which frame the picture. The camera used was a small Samsung ST500 with ISO of 80, aperture f/4.1 and

Rocking night for the Chappy Contributed by Chris Bell Recently there was a really rocking night held to raise funds for our Beerwah High Chaplain – Mike Turner. There was a wonderful turn up for a fantastic night of Rock and Roll music and dance organised by Allie Lovett at the Beerwah Community Hall. The skill and energy of some of the dancers was amazing while others became exhausted just watching.

Landsborough Museum will be holding a Garage Sale on Saturday, June 4 from 8.00am - 2.00pm. We are in need of more saleable items which can be dropped off at the Museum any Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Sunday from 9.00am to 2.00pm. This is one of our fundraising events of the year with all profits going back into the Museum to help with the running costs as we are totally self-funded. Page Street Tree Planting

GMAN (Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network) is planning a community tree planting in the Page Street Bushland Park on Saturday, June 5 as part of the Glasshouse Country Festival. We invite you, your family and friends to join us on that morning to plant up to 1,000 trees to revegetate the area. Our tube stock propagation is well advanced and the local council are planning the preparation of the area. We would like to see as many as possible mums, dads and children come along at 8.00am to help with this wonderful event. Community Thanksgiving Service There will be a special service held on Saturday, June 5 at the Beerwah Sportsground from 5.00pm – 6.00pm. The service is all about being thankful to the people in our community and for where we live. Bring along your picnic rug and chairs to this very important family event, there will be a sausage sizzle on the night. The event is being organised by the Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship and Scripture Union. Organisers have invited representatives from emergency services, teachers, cleaners, sports coaches and volunteers so they can be thanked for the important work they do in our community each day.

‘Bankfoot House’ Open Day On Sunday, June 5, the 140 year old Bankfoot House at 1998 Old Gympie Road, Glass House Mountains will be open from 9.00am – 4.00pm. The day will give locals and visitors an opportunity to inspect this former Cobb & Co lunch stop and accommodation house from the late 1800s. Volunteers from the Friends of Bankfoot House will be on hand as house guides to explain the history of the house and talk of the three generations of the same family who made Bankfoot their home. The Australian Teamster’s Hall of Fame, across the road from Bankfoot House, will also be open for inspection and includes memorabilia from the coaching days. Tea and damper will be available. Green Light for Glasshouse Streetscape Project

Construction is about to start on the Glasshouse Streetscape Project, with a focus on Bruce Parade. The aim of this project is to improve pedestrian and traffic safety, while improving the visual amenity and capture that ‘village feel’. Features of the $700,000 Glasshouse Streetscape Project include: • Planted medians on Bruce Parade that separate through traffic from parking for local shops • Realignment of kerbs to allow for new pathways • Feature seating areas and gardens • Upgrade to underground road drainage • Washed concrete footpaths • Feature handrail to western footpath outside existing café • Upgraded street lighting • Improved underground drainage • Provision for additional caravan and heavy vehicle parking • Two additional motorcycle parking bays Work is due to start in the week commencing May 30 and is expected to be completed within 12 weeks. During construction pedestrian property access may be affected for short durations. Traffic management measures will be in place to ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists.

Whites Road, Landsborough – Bridge Replacement

Council will be undertaking work to replace the bridge on Whites Road, Landsborough which will also include the realignment of the approach road from the east to improve safety. The new bridge will be a double lane bridge, and will be raised by approximately one metre to improve flood immunity. The old bridge will remain open during construction as the new bridge is being built off the existing alignment. Unfortunately a number of trees will need to be removed to allow for construction, however; to offset the impact council will be undertaking revegetation of the old road and bridge site after work is completed. The $670,000 project is programmed to start in the week commencing May 30 and completion is anticipated within 12 weeks. RSL Youth Development Program

The Returned and Services League (RSL) of Australia (QLD Branch) and Bond University have joined forces to offer the half-million dollar RSL Youth Development Program. The program has been designed to recognise and reward the efforts of high-achieving Queensland students. Grants of up to $5,000 will be awarded in the following categories: Academic Achievement (inclusive of Arts, Drama, Dance and Media); Sporting Achievement; Community Leadership and Civic Participation. Both year 10 and 11 students will be eligible for grants of up to $2,500 and the top 10 per cent of the highest achieving finalists will receive greater recognition via a $5,000 grant. Recipients of an RSL Youth Development Program grant also have the exclusive opportunity to apply for a Scholarship to cover 50 per cent of tuition fees for any single or combined degree at Bond University at the completion of high school. Nambout Waste Disposal Facility changes to acceptance of waste

The Nambour Waste Disposal Facility in Cooney Road is now closed to any and all vehicles in excess of 4.5 tonnes (other than the kerbside collection vehicles). The modified facility receiving options commenced May 17, following an extensive advertising campaign. The Caloundra Facility in Pierce Avenue is open for business as usual and can accept any of the usual wastes. With construction of a new waste disposal cell now commencing, we hope to have the facility open again to all traffic at the end of 2012. We will confirm the date nearer to completion of the works.

The Power of Thanks

It is not hard to see there is a lot of anxiety and fear in our world. Mental illness is at an alltime high, suicide claims more lives than car fatalities. It is not a pretty picture. Some of the big issues for us seem to include the cost of living, dealing with relationship problems and family breakdown, worrying about loved ones, health issues, lack of direction, then there is all the horrible stuff we see on the news night after night… This is real stuff. Now, I believe that there is a direct correlation between how thankful we are in life and our general wellbeing. I believe that there is real power in being thankful regardless of what life is like for us. I can say from personal experience that this is sometimes very difficult to do, but there have been times when our family car has broken down again, the kids are sick, I've had a bad day at work, even then… if I stop and take a breath… I begin to see all the things that I can be thankful for. When I do this, it lifts my mood and I get things back into perspective. I think this is a great habit to get into – I am trying to do this more and more. In Proverbs 17:22 it says ‘a cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.’ I think that is a great way of describing how it feels when stuff gets on top of us and we lose heart – it ‘dries up the bones’. The big thing about all this stuff is that it is about our heart (not our physical heart – but the deepest part of who we are). God knows everything about us, he knows our motives and our attitudes. It is God’s plan for us that we be thankful to him for the blessings he has given us – our families, our employment, food, shelter, friends, a car, clothes, air, water, electricity… the list goes on. As well as being thankful, we can thank others for what they do. We all know how good it is to be thanked by someone. It lifts your spirit as well. So, to that end, on Saturday, June 4 from 5.00pm the local churches are working together to run a ‘Community Thanksgiving Service’ at the Beerwah Sportsground. Please come along and bring your family, picnic rug and chairs. There will be a sausage sizzle from 4.30pm. It will be a special time for our community to stop and express what we are thankful for, plus thank some people from our community.

New home for Barung Landcare Native Nursery

Barung Landcare has found a new home for its production nursery thanks to the Sunshine Coast Council. The Council has been working with Barung to ensure its valuable contribution to the region's biodiversity is not lost due to decisions around opportunities within the Maleny Precinct Project running behind schedule. Cr Anna Grosskreutz has welcomed Barung to the Glasshouse Country Region with Barung setting up its nursery operations on Council owned land at Forestry Road, Landsborough. “Caloundra City Council purchased the 31.3 hectare site known as the ‘Ostrich Farm’ back in 1985 when it was purchased partly to provide temporary wetlands for the nearby sewerage treatment plant,” Cr Grosskreutz said. Cr Jenny MacKay said it was important Barung found a home in time to meet their business plan under the Federal Government Job's Initiative Grant and the Landsborough land would be a long term investment by the Council, Government and Barung Landcare.

Local strongman prepares for next competition Beerburrum resident 33-year-old Tim O’Shea is deep into his preparation for his assault on the Brisbane Strongest Man competition to be held at the Sleeman Sports Centre at Chandler for Sunday, May 29. Tim followed up a solid 2010 season with a great start to 2011, placing third at the Australian Amateur Strongman Championships in Ballarat on Australia Day. The Brisbane Strongest Man competition is not only a stepping stone to Australia’s Strongest Man in July, but is a prestigious title in its own right. Brisbane’s Strongest Man will have two novice and two open divisions, with Tim competing in the open heavyweight division. The five disciplines will include a 370kg yoke walk, a 130kg per hand farmers walk, a 300kg sled drag, a 260kg dead lift for maximum repetitions and a 130kg axle clean and press for maximum repetitions. Good luck Tim, we all look forward to hearing how you go.
