HOW TO VOTE ... WHEN TO VOTE ... WHERE TO VOTE At this election (March 28, 2020), you’ll have the option to vote for one, some or all the candidates in your Division and for the Mayoralty – this is called ‘optional preferential voting’ (OPV).

OPV requires an elector to mark the ballot paper to indicate their preference. Electors can choose to “vote for one, vote for some, or vote for all” candidates on the ballot paper.

Your preference order won’t be automatically allocated; only you can decide where your preferences go. If the candidates you vote for are eliminated from the count, your vote will be exhausted.

There will be instructions at the polling booth and on the ballot paper itself. Make sure you read them and understand what you have to do. If you have any questions, you can always just ask one of the Electoral Commission Queensland staff inside the polling station.

If a ballot paper is not completed correctly it is called an informal vote. An informal vote is unable to be counted and does not contribute towards determining the election result.

Some reasons a ballot paper is informal are because: it is blank or unmarked; ticks or crosses have been used when numbering in order of preferences is required; the required number of boxes have not been marked; or it has writing on it which identifies the elector.

And don’t write comments on the ballot paper. You might think them witty, poignant or cutting, but no one really cares. The vote counters just count the votes, they don’t take notice of the comments and they aren’t seen by anyone who you might be directing the comments at.

Vote for some / vote for all

Vote for only one candidate by placing a one (1), tick or cross in the square opposite the name of your preferred candidate.

Vote for some or all by placing a one (1) in the box of your preferred candidate. You can then number some or all of remaining boxes in order of your preference according to the instructions on the ballot paper.

There are two main ways you can vote 1. Pre-poll voting is where you cast your ballot before the election day at one of the pre-polling stations. The locations of these pre-polling stations are listed below.

2. On the day voting, March 28, Election Day and fill out the ballot paper at a polling booth. This way of voting lets you also maybe buy a sausage sandwich from a P&C or a cake from the CWA stall ... not a bad day all-round. Polling booths will be open at 8am and close at 6pm.

Vote counting and declaration of results The day after election day, the ECQ will start the official vote count and publish results on the ECQ website. The official count process can take up to 10 days for postal

You will need to vote on both ballot papers, choosing your preferences for the Divisional Councillor on one and again for the Mayor on the other.

In Division 5, you have a choice between ten candidates for Councillor.

Greg Cutlack I cannot pretend I am not joining this campaign only to focus on roads, rates and rubbish. All three are of paramount importance to me. They are fundamental and crucial services that we have to plan and manage better for our future.

However, I believe there are bigger challenges ahead and my intention is go beyond just local issues.

Our soil, water and air are being impacted upon at an ever-increasing rate. This is not just a local issue as you know. Globally there are mechanisms in place that, if not addressed, will make our lifestyle or even existence very difficult.

Here on the Sunshine Coast we must plan and act decisively and immediately. Together we can plan and construct a future that embraces our cultural differences - a future that recognises and incorporates an equal measure of social, environment and economic responsibility.

We must plan our future together.

Starting my working life as a jackaroo on a large sheep station near Wilcannia and later a cattle station in the Northern Territory, I ran my own cattle and sheep property before settling in Eudlo with my family in 2002.

We had sold our farm near Emmaville in NSW and purchased our block at Eudlo.

The children enrolled at Eudlo State School where we immersed ourselves in our new community. I was the P&C president and enjoyed organising our local WOEIE (Where On Earth Is Eudlo) festival.

We owner-built our house from demolition and recycled materials from two small Queenslanders, a retired timber mill and the old Moffat Beach picture cinema that we demolished.

With a thirst for construction, I went on to become a registered builder and I have a deep passion for sustainable, affordable, accessible and eco-friendly housing.

I am sole director and employee of my own company – Ecosos Pty Ltd – and have recently completed three years of contract work with Telstra and NBN Co connecting customers to the node in the old copper network.

I understand firsthand the frustration and disappointment some residences experience with their data transfers, or lack thereof. If elected, I will do my utmost to remedy this for residents on the Sunshine Coast.

I realise that there will be challenges ahead and the legacy of retiring councillor Jenny McKay will be hard to match.

But I wish to be a councillor who works constructively with the constituents of Division 5 as well as other Sunshine Coast communities.

Greg Cutlack - candidate for Division 5 1. What town do you live in and what is an issue you would address in that town if elected to Sunshine Coast Council?

The name of Eudlo originated from the local Aboriginal term for the fresh water eel (Anguilla reinhardtii). Eudlo has six roads leading into town, none of which has safe walking passage. When she was in year 7 my daughter addressed the Sunshine Coast councillors, convened at the Palmwoods Bowls Club, as part of her Eudlo State School public speaking course. She chose the issue of walking and bike paths for her road that leads to town - a road too dangerous to traverse by foot or bike. Today, Highlands Road is still a hazardous road for the many pedestrians and cyclists who jeopardise their safety in pursuit of travel or fitness.

If elected it will be my task to consult with the relevant stakeholders and ensure that not only Eudlo has walking and cycling paths but, where possible, all our hinterland townspeople have the means to access the services and amenities on an equal footing to motorists. Now more than ever we need safe and accessible paths to exercise and traverse.

Moreover, tourists around the world are flocking to regions that offer the opportunity to traverse the country side in safe and environmentally sustainable methods.

2. If a large delegation of your constituents form a group to fight for a separate hinterland council, would you support their cause and why?

For me to support such action I would certainly need a justifiable position and reason to argue. It is only now, after being posed this question, I have considered the issue.

I can understand a small yet growing town like Nambour feeling abandoned by the decision to move our centrally located administration to Maroochydore.

I can understand the issue of inequity and the disparity between the funding allocated to either side of the Bruce Highway.

However, the current arrangement and system we have allows for and encourages debate in a united and cohesive environment.

I feel the larger and more diverse our region is the more interesting and unique we are.

If I have missed a crucial point in relation to this matter please inform me. Otherwise I will support the current system of 10 Divisions and not support a separate hinterland council.

The community halls project has reinvigorated our town halls, bring us many performances and exhibitions which would otherwise not have eventuated. Most towns in Division 5 have been recipients of councils green spaces and beautification projects.

I will be actively supporting these and future initiatives regardless of whether or not I am elected for council in Division 5.

4. Tell us what makes you the best candidate for Division 5?

It is with a mixture of trepidation coupled with a feeling of optimism and excitement that we should look towards the next ten years of local community government here on the Sunshine Coast. We are beginning a period, in our region, where we have the opportunity to create and plan the way we would like to see the Sunshine Coast evolve.

Together as a community we will retain, protect and conserve those things that we hold dear, the things that will help keep our region healthy and happy. Namely the biodiversity and ecosystems that make the Sunshine Coast unique. The air, soil, water, the remnant vegetation all have an integral part in our wellbeing.

We can no longer continue with the current business as usual approach. We are witnessing valuable remnant vegetation gradually diminish before our very eyes. We are seeing the infestation of exotic weeds decimate our waterways and forests. Not to mention the cost to agriculture from the influx of grassland weeds.

We can take advantage of the financial and environmental benefits from undertaking energy, water and waste management audits. However, profit and savings alone are not the yard stick to a prosperous community. The council’s business/bottom line should reflect in order of necessity and priority and with an equal measure and balance between our social, environmental and economic requirements.

3. What is something you feel council has done really well in Division 5, and what would you do to make sure that success continues?

There are numerous public projects as well as private funding recipients that Council has successfully accomplished with support and funding in Division 5.

Council has supported and administered Land for Wildlife that has seen 1000’s of acres of our remnant vegetation protected under voluntary agreements with land holders.

Tracy Burton Fossil fuel and corporate donations have left them unable to confront the climate emergency that is tragically unfolding before our eyes.

I am proud to be an active member of The Queensland Greens and it is an honour to stand as the candidate for Division 5 in the 2020 local council election. I look forward to sharing my vision for a society of equality, ecological sustainability and justice, for all of us.

VOTE 1 GREENS I am a long-serving high school teacher, mother of two and an active participant in environmental projects locally and internationally, and I believe the Sunshine Coast is a beautiful and unique part of Queensland that needs to be preserved and protected.

An experienced candidate, I represented The Greens as the candidate for Buderim in the 2017 state election and more recently as the candidate for Fisher in the 2019 federal election, achieving positive swings and results in each election.

By running as a candidate for The Greens, people know what I stand for. I am being honest and upfront about my values.

Having lived in the hinterland for 12 years now, I have seen the coast develop and change, and not always for the better. I think there is genuine concern in the community for the direction of our coast, as the population increases and the effects of climate change are becoming more dangerous every season.

If elected, I will immediately propose that council declares a climate emergency, in line with Noosa and all the other concerned councils around Australia.

We will protect the Sunshine Coast from further habitat loss due to over-development and look to improve our climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies.

I will advocate for greater participatory democracy in council’s decision making to increase transparency, trust and integrity. I will also address the growing issue of housing unaffordability, homelessness and the rights for renters.

The Greens are poised to compete strongly on the Sunshine Coast as more people were aware that the old parties did not represent the communities that elected them.

Tracy Burton - candidate for Division 5 1. What town do you live in and what is an issue you would address in that town if elected to Sunshine Coast Council?

I have lived in Palmwoods and the surrounding community since 2008 and was born in Maryborough on the Fraser Coast, where my extended family lives going back generations.

After consulting with the residents of Palmwoods and Woombye, loss of habitat due to overdevelopment is of great concern.

Sadly, we have all witnessed several local forests clearfelled to make way for new estates, where mature old trees were chopped down to create the roundabout.

Local wildlife have been lost or displaced and our green corridors significantly reduced. If elected I would vote against inappropriate development and fight to protect Palmwoods’s green spaces.

Increased traffic on the main road through the town has also increased, worsening pedestrian safety concerns. The traffic roaring down Margaret Street past the bakery is very dangerous for families and drivers. The speed limit really needs to be reduced to 40km/h with flashing signage to notify drivers to slow down. There is also concern about the lack of safe pedestrian pathways linking Kolora Park to the shops and further along Chevallum Road.

Kolora Park (the duck pond) needs a great deal of work to improve its health and cleanliness. The water quality is extremely poor and people have been turned off going there, which is such a shame. New playground equipment certainly wouldn’t go astray either.

2. If a large delegation of your constituents form a group to fight for a separate hinterland council, would you support their cause and why?

This question addresses the heart of what it means to practice community consultation and co-design principles. To decide on whether the Hinterland should de-amalgamate from the SCC, an extensive community consultation process would need to occur.

Community groups and individuals must be provided with sufficient information in plain language to enable meaningful participation; citizens and groups would be fully informed on how to participate, with transparent and fair mechanisms utilised to translate community views into such changes. A change such as this would need to be approved by a community referendum held to coincide with local or State government elections.

Residents would have the final say and I would be guided by their decision.

This hypothetical case highlights the need to ensure that residents can actively participate and observe local democracy in action through: live streaming, regular face to face meetings, well utilised social media platforms using new and existing technologies, and local forums to strengthen the base of participatory democracy.

If elected, I would employ community co-design principles to immediately develop a “Division 5, Future Neighbourhood Plan” which reflects the expectations and future vision of our communities. This plan will direct and guide my work as your Councillor.

3. What is something you feel council has done really well in Division 5, and what would you do to make sure that success continues?

Over many years, Cr McKay has traversed the beautiful country of Division 5 multiple times to reach communities.

I look forward to continuing to consult with and assist our wonderful local groups, young and old, far and wide.

In terms of infrastructure, I commend the: • Maleny Tiny House project to help those in need; • Witta waste disposal facility; • maintenance of parks and gardens; • Palmwoods Village Green and dog park in Federation Park; and • new bus stops.

Environmentally I especially commend: • Council’s Biosphere nomination; • the Dark Sky Park proposal for Howells Knob Lookout, Reesville; • winning the Banksia Government Award for the Mary Cairncross BioBlitz project; and • the land acquisition program to grow council’s conservation reserve network.

I will work hard to ensure that Division 5 has outstanding sustainability practices and well protected habitats and wildlife.

Ongoing engagement with the business community is also very important so I will continue to attend Chambers of Commerce and Community Business Association meetings – listening to and acting on concerns and proposals.

It is important that the views of the Hinterland are shared with the Coast, as we work together on achieving a sustainable future. We have a great deal of insight and knowledge to offer.

I will work diligently to make sure the Hinterland and our local needs are strongly represented and respected.

4. Tell us what makes you the best candidate for Division 5?

If we consider the word ‘best’, there is direct relevance to what is best for our division, council and region and whether, as your councillor, I can achieve this. I believe I can, and will.

Throughout this campaign, it has become clear that people are concerned about protecting the remaining habitat of the hinterland from inappropriate development. I strongly agree with this position and will work tirelessly to ensure more sustainable practices are implemented because this is best practice.

As a high school teacher I have followed a strict code of conduct for 20 years and have reflected a high level of integrity and responsibility in my professional life. This is why the lack of transparency and trust with this council goes against everything I believe in.

My personal character is strong and I am governed by a strong sense of morality and justice. As your councillor, I will always have the best interests of our community and environment in mind. My moral compass is strong.

It is clear that we need to acknowledge and respond to the effects of dangerous external forces like climate change and the current pandemic on our community. I will work to ensure council responds swiftly and compassionately to help people and wildlife in need. I believe this is ‘best’.

VOTE 1 A Montville mother of six and award winning business woman, I have nominated to represent the Sunshine Coast Council seat of Division 5 in the upcoming local government elections.

Owner of business growth consultancies Splash Marketing and PR and Innovate Sunshine Coast, I will be running as an independent candidate for the division, which is currently held by retiring councillor Jenny McKay. Local representation that truly represents the holistic interests of the hinterland community is more important than ever before.

I live in the division; I am a local business owner and my children attend school in the region - and I am committed to ensuring a future in our hinterland villages that my children and their children will be proud to call home.

My experience as a senior executive within various governments as well as a business owner means that I am well positioned to hit the ground running on my election to the council.

With a number of decades experience across all levels of government in Queensland, South Australia, NSW and the Northern Territory, as well as other roles in the private sector, I also bring a passion for sustainable regional development.

One of my primary arenas of interest is in building resilience and robust regional economies across social, economic and environmental aspects of our communities.

Tracie Sanim - candidate for Division 5 1. What town do you live in and what is an issue you would address in that town if elected to Sunshine Coast Council?

I live in Montville. There are several key issues relevant to our town and others. However, I’d like to focus on how we preserve our amenity.

Protection against inappropriate development across the hinterland has been relatively good from a regional/rural perspective but to continue this we do need to address the risks that the Queensland Government created in 2016 across planning and development legislation.

The 2016 Planning Act has reduced transparency and accountability particularly in relation to code versus impact assessable development applications. This means that the community currently, and into the future, will have little or no say about local developments that may affect the amenity of our area.

Other key issues I would like to focus on across Montville and our broader region include safety in and around local streets and school areas, noxious weed control and improved management of bushland. We have many vistas and waterways across our region that require an integrated effort between relevant government agencies and community groups.

Parking in and around schools, visibility in high traffic areas and the maintenance of our verges will be very important in the future. Our local streets - and this is a whole of division issue - need more pathways and walkways to encourage walking and improve safety for those who do walk.

2. If a large delegation of your constituents form a group to fight for a separate hinterland council, would you support their cause and why?

I have been part of this process when the Douglas Shire Council had been amalgamated with Cairns and then successfully separated.

A de-amalgamation occurs when there is a significant disconnect between two regions that have been partnered together as a result of the State Government driven process.

I would begin with seeking to understand the reasoning and rationale as to why the community was seeking this option. I would then identify all opportunities, risks and issues that would result from this process. For instance, my understanding is that the hinterland population is around a little more than 50,000 and - 1/7th of the combined council region. My primary concerns would be to determine: • What is the rating value of this population • What is the current budgetary allocation - capital works and maintenance for the hinterland • Whether there are any potential lost key relationships ie Visit Sunshine Coast and how we would broker new partnerships to tap into relevant opportunities that the coast presents.

After determining key information I would consult with our whole hinterland community and ensure all relevant information was provided to them. If our community

engagement revealed that in light of all information that this was an overwhelming issue and that the amalgamation was not functioning I would progress as per the community’s wishes.

3. What is something you feel council has done really well in Division 5, and what would you do to make sure that success continues?

Jenny Mackay has been a strong advocate for our community - and I believe her approach to showcase our natural environment and successful delivery of key community projects has been outstanding.

The individual aspects of each of our villages has been retained - and I believe this is key into the future. Our future plans for our hinterland division should include enhancing and capitalising on the key strengths of each village - for instance the artisan aspects of Montville, the sporting, community, health and wellbeing aspects of Maleny, the food bowl that Witta and Conondale represents and the live entertainment and music scene in Palmwoods.

People live in and visit our communities as they each have a different offering. I’d like to see us introduce “experience trails” to help our visitors have a more immersive view of the whole hinterland offering. Other regions have cheese and wine trails, adventure and hiking trails (where you participate in a series of hiking events), craft beer trails, food and produce trails and more. Working collaboratively with a group such as the Food and Agribusiness Network to create a journey of experiences means we will build a community of engaged and loyal champions of the hinterland.

4. Tell us what makes you the best candidate for Division 5?

Our division is the largest and most diverse across the council area and requires a councillor with the vitality, the energy and the tenacity to dedicate to the whole of the area.

You deserve a councillor who has the skills and the attributes to represent you  a councillor with energy who offers longevity, who can collaborate and who is able to adapt as times change.

I bring to you decades of experience across four states in local, state and federal governments. I have 25 years’ experience in project management, community engagement and in building transparency into government.

I am the only candidate who has first-hand experience in waste management projects, water infrastructure development, roads and bridges development, economic development initiatives, sustainability projects and more.

We live in a changing world and to be relevant and effective we need to continue to learn. Over the past decade I’ve secured postgraduate qualifications in business management, innovation and entrepreneurship and I am now studying business research.

Kiti Bruinsma It’s not about you or me, it is about we and us, and making sure local government comes back to serving the people.

I do want to make a difference. I know I can make a difference.

It is time for ongoing strong representation for the people of Division 5.

I am a wife, a mother of four and a Palmwoods resident and community member, and I have put myself forward as a candidate for Division 5 in the Sunshine Coast Council elections.

I am nominating with the aim of bringing sensible, honest and common sense representation to the people of Palmwoods, Montville, Maleny, Eudlo, Mooloolah, Woombye and surrounds.

As a mother and community member, I bring a levelheaded view of the world.

I think I can look at issues in an objective way to make decisions.

I like people, I like community and I just want people to be well represented and well served by the Sunshine Coast Council.

Not completely foreign to politics, I grew up in a political household in Fiji, where I observed her late father’s humility, honesty, courage and intellect as a government minister, chairman of the Public Service Commission and his service with key public bodies including the Fiji National Provident Fund and the National St John Council of Fiji. My decision to run as a candidate was piqued when a close friend encouraged me to “give it a go”.

I spent the first 15 years of my life in Fiji before attending Brisbane’s Clayfield College as a boarder to complete my secondary education. I then studied a Bachelor of Business at the University of Southern Queensland.

I have worked in retail and service industries and currently have an online business, Gold & Cedar, which markets cosmetics to women of colour.

Kiti Bruinsma - candidate for Division 5 1. What town do you live in and what is an issue you would address in that town if elected to Sunshine Coast Council?

I live in Palmwoods.

These are the issues I would address.

Stronger support for CCTV in towns located alongside the railway corridor. These are Palmwoods, Woombye, Eudlo and Mooloolah.

Transport service. Bus timetables are irregular. There is a need for more bus stops.

Development. It is imperative for developers and council to seriously maintain the lifestyle and the character of the hinterland.

Road infrastructure. With the increase of population in the hinterland, the need for efficiency of movement matches the population growth.

Kerbside collection. The community needs council support to assist in both affordable dump fees and picking up of whitegoods and other large household items at least once a year.

I will not support their cause because council has done okay in the Division but the hinterland still needs stronger support and an increased investment from council and the state government.

To support such a cause it would mean less state government funding for the remaining Sunshine Coast Council and it would also mean more costs to establish a new council.

Sunshine Coast Council needs to ensure that services improve in the hinterland and great council representation is present to keep services strong.

3. What is something you feel council has done really well in Division 5, and what would you do to make sure that success continues?

The wisdom I’ve learned through a wide array of life experiences, coupled with the absence of ideological baggage and my total dedication to this community, make me the best person to represent Division 5.

I have no preconceived ideas on the challenges to face local people, other than a strong desire to come up with positive solutions that will help make life better in all areas of Division 5.

I am a mother and wife, a small business owner; I volunteer at the Salvation Army and at The Shack at Nambour because I want to make a positive difference in the lives of local people.

My father was a minister in the Fiji Government and greatly respected his constituents. He treated everyone fairly no matter their position in the community, he was honest and committed to what was right, and he was dedicated to fixing their problems and making life better for them. I have a deep desire to follow in his footsteps and, although he is no longer with us, I will conduct myself in a way that I know would make him proud of me.

As a long-term Maleny resident, I have a long record of battling for and delivering new, improved hinterland community infrastructure and services, every voter should know that I am standing as a strong independent with a strategic ten-point plan to manage, protect and enhance the division.

Following recent bush fires, many voiced their concerns to me for their family’s safety and homes and property as, despite limited rain, many slopes still remain extremely dry.

I have lived in the hinterland since relocating to Wootha with my young family in 1988 and now have four children and four grandchildren.

Greg Williams - candidate for Division 5 1. What town do you live in and what is an issue you would address in that town if elected to Sunshine Coast Council?

I reside in Maleny and residents in Maleny and throughout Division 5 are telling me that the lack public transport and subsidised hinterland bus/Coastlink and taxi services and their connectivity to rail is impacting adversely upon them. Parents, pensioners and adolescents are telling me it is important to improve public transport services to enable: • them to remain in the area • their children to travel to sports practice and competitions and activities because they work • older children to travel to and from part-time, full-time jobs and/or tertiary studies because they are unable to drive them • low income families, retirees, pensioners and unemployed to access services at local hospitals and participate in sport and activities because they no longer have the use of their own vehicle.

My solution – to reprioritise and direct funds collected from the transport levy to pay for: • increased bus services throughout the day and on weekends from early morning to late evening • increased affordable transport services provided by the Sunshine Coast Council hinterland Q-Connect/Coastlink services and/or other providers throughout Division 5 • extending the 690 and 691 bus services to Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital (bus stop outside) and turnaround at the council works depot in Palm Street • increased construction of bus stops on all routes • improved connectivity to rail services.

If a large delegation of your constituents form a group to fight for a separate hinterland council, would you support their cause and why?

I would listen very carefully to the arguments being articulated by the delegation in favour of forming a separate hinterland council as I strongly oppose and will vote to halt or defer planning decisions/contracts that adversely impact upon our liveability, such as • the wasteful expenditure on the new Maroochydore City Hall building, and • the unfunded coastal Light Rail project which proposes to increase population and exacerbate traffic chaos, gridlock and business disruption before provision of adequate transport infrastructure.

However, I would be concerned if only constituents in Division 5 were interested, as the population of Division 5 may not be adequate to meet the one off costs of de-amalgamation nor have ongoing financial rate base capacity to provide the necessary and required new infrastructure (Division 5 has little if any Council administrative infrastructure) and standard of services expected by residents without higher rates and charges, and progressive and accountable leadership with a visionary and sustainable growth policy.

To be clear, I would not support any de-amalgamation process if the results were higher rates and charges and reduced services for my constituents.

It may be more practical, and cost effective for constituents to identify and support Council election candidates not only in Division 5 but across the region who would implement the change of direction being sought through the process.

3. What is something you feel council has done really well in Division 5, and what would you do to make sure that success continues?

The feedback from residents throughout the campaign is that outgoing Councillor Jenny McKay and Council consulted with local communities and has constructed some fantastic environmental, recreational, and eco- tourism infrastructure within Division 5 including Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Garden and the recently completed Green Park toilet block.

It has also provided much needed new sporting infrastructure for netball at Victory Park at Woombye, and significant funding towards the recently completed 18 hole Maleny Golf Course.

But residents across Division 5 are telling me that I will need to lobby Council very hard to provide so much more in the years ahead to make sure that such success continues including: • Additional carparking at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve to cater for its massive popularity; • Additional Change rooms at many sporting grounds throughout the hinterland; • The construction of the Maleny Hydrotherapy Centre at Maleny Sports Park and further planning for an Indoor Aquatic Centre at the same site; • Opposing any resumption and or relocation of the historic Woombye Snakes Soccer Club, Pony Club and Scouts and advocating for the extension and improvement of the grounds by acquisition of adjoining land; • Location of Dark Sky Astronomy in Maleny; • Extension of the Hinterland Trail, and creation of a new Rail Trail; • Extension of pedestrian footpaths and cycle paths in all townships.

4. Tell us what makes you the best candidate for Division 5?

I pledge to listen respectfully, consult widely, fairly and equitably, and transparently distribute project and service delivery to the whole of Division 5.

I will draw on my past 20 years of working with all levels of government obtaining grant funding and delivering communitybased projects. My ethos as a team player and my legal background is to do everything humanely possible to grow the pie of funding to our hinterland communities beyond just our fair share of council funding for delivery of necessary projects and services, including: Re-empowering landowners to mitigate against disasters.

Improving public transport services to all hinterland townships.

Improving local roads through additional federal black spot and state funding.

Keeping rates increases pegged to CPI or less.

Constructing more pedestrian and cycle paths as well as dog off-leash areas.

Growing the local tourism and food industry employment by creating a heritage and food rail trail that links our railway towns and the Hinterland Great Walk to Montville.

Supporting a new regional arts centre at Russell Family Park, Montville.

Improving all sporting and library facilities and supporting an indoor aquatic facility in Maleny.

Amending planning powers to protect the character and amenity of our unique heritage townships to enable the sustainable growth and operation of eco-tourism and rural businesses.

I am apolitical; which means I am not interested in politics but I am optimistic about the efficiency of local government as a strong organisation that delivers exceptional services to the community.

As an Independent candidate I don’t have ties to a traditional party group, which means I can be flexible and act in the best interests of the electorate.

I am a seventh generation Australian but was educated in England.

My wife Elizabeth, a nurse at Selangor Hospital in Nambour, and I built a carbon-positive home in Maleny 10 years ago and are both passionate about the hinterland lifestyle.

I have a 40-year background in the photography industry, operating studios in Sydney, Brisbane, London and Hamburg.

During the 1990s, I was a consultant for Polaroid and responsible for the Queensland Department of Transport, Department of Health and Queensland Police, which provided valuable knowledge of government purchase procedures.

In the late 1990s I established a company for import and distribution from UK photographic manufacturers.

During the past 17 years I have travelled across North America and Europe as the editor for ‘Silvershotz’ magazine, where my tenure has just finished.

I describe myself as a workaholic with a lot of energy to burn, someone who has to have major life goals to pursue and accomplish.

Travelling the world on business for 25 years heightens my awareness of the destruction of the planet and just how special the Sunshine Coast hinterland biosphere is, and it must be protected at all costs.

Recently, I have joined a network of Australian scientists and researchers on energy security, climate change minimisation techniques, integration of alternative energy sources, waste recycling innovations, food production (commercial and home) sustainability and minimising electromagnetic radiation from communication towers.

The combination of addressing all these issues provides a healthier lifestyle and local council can implement smarter and safer procedures.

Clive Waring - candidate for Division 5 1. What town do you live in and what is an issue you would address in that town if elected to Sunshine Coast Council?

I live in Maleny.

Maleny requires an overall plan, known in development circles as a placemaking master plan.

Maleny is a tourist destination and we can improve so many areas to create a vibrant town with a WOW factor that we can all be proud of that enhances our lifestyle and brings economic benefits.

There are many groups who separately discuss issues and are passionate about actioning them.

My priority if elected councillor is to galvanise and coordinate the business community, environment groups, community groups, sports and recreation, and individuals to develop a cohesive plan.

There is so much we can do to involve art groups to assist with streetscapes and decorating shop fronts, pavements and park areas. How do we realise the dream of building an aquatic and cultural arts centre? How do we integrate parking areas and maintain our special environment of creeks and rainforests?

Once we agree on an overall plan it needs to be costed and a budget prepared. It involves everyone working as a team.

My first year as councillor will be to bring this vision to a reality through consultation with all Maleny stakeholders; then presenting to council and state and federal MPs the plan so we can allocate funding from all three levels.

Through my efforts as a councillor I believe I can make this happen.

2. If a large delegation of your constituents form a group to fight for a separate hinterland council, would you support their cause and why?

A Hinterland Council would have to include the three Divisions of 1, 5 and 10 to capitalise on economies of scale. There is certainly a different mindset and community values in the Hinterland which are very different to residents of the coastal area east of the Bruce Highway.

This is certainly an option to consider if the existing Council buildings in Nambour were utilised.

I would certainly be interested in this discussion to ensure it is viable and we are not economically disadvantaged.

Another option is integrating more solar panels on council buildings, and feeding power into battery storage systems to create a more robust and resilient supply in the face of outages.

Council currently has a fleet of hybrid cars. When the lease is finished the change over should be to all electric cars.

Installing more electric charge points across the region will encourage more car owners to make the switch to all electric cars; the power supply can be from more solar farms, thus reducing pollution so we have more clean air on the coast.

The additional benefit is energy security to reduce the impact on communities if world oil supplies are interrupted by escalating Middle East war and/or trade disputes.

4. Tell us what makes you the best candidate for Division 5?

I am a high energy individual with drive, passion, new ideas and methodologies because of 40 years of experience in corporate and business. This year will be challenging economically and I understand large budgets and working closely with the Mayor, CEO and their team.

The rates need to have a zero increase for the next four years to limit impacts on a financially vulnerable society.

I have the ability to table important discussion points at council meetings to deliver better outcomes.

I am passionate about sustainable development while maintaining the special hinterland environment through partnerships, grants and the environment levy with groups such as Barung Landcare, Bushlinks and Lake Baroon Catchment Care group.

As a member of Maleny Commerce I understand what is important for small and micro businesses to survive.

Reducing red tape is vital so that volunteer, community and sports groups function with council support; not impossible compliances.

I live in Maleny and within 32 minutes’ drive to every part of Division 5. If you elect me as your councillor I can attend regular community and business meetings very easily. Council has committed to addressing climate change through the Sunshine Coast Solar Farm photovoltaic power station operating on a 24 hectares site in Valdora near Yandina.

The station has a maximum generating capacity of 15 megawatts and currently offsets the carbon emitted by Council. The next step is to audit Council buildings and identify electricity consumption, and then map out a plan to reduce electricity usage by 50%.

A trained school teacher, I am a solid down to earth family woman having raised my four children here. Operating a guest house on Towen Mountain Road I spent a lot of time bringing visitors to enjoy the many scenic shopping and dining delights the range has to offer. I more recently enjoyed selling my natural home-made products at the Maleny markets.

My extensive list of achievements on the Sunshine Coast, including the founding of our university, proves that I am a person who gets things done.

I have represented the hinterland as director and chair of the Sunshine Coast Tourism Board, supported the development of the Blackall Range Independent School, spearheaded the establishment of the first TAFE College on the Sunshine Coast (in Nambour), along with the arts incubator, and fought to save the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge in Sippy Creek from closure.

I was also instrumental in introducing the environment levy, which contributes $10 million directly to the purchase, protection and enhancement of our natural environment.

I am committed to the enforcement of environmental degradation laws, the reduction of urban sprawl across the hinterland and disaster management strategies for the future.

I live on the cusp of Palmwoods, Chevallum and Eudlo and would like to see more attention to roadside curb maintenance, signage and street lighting.

With almost 600km of council’s unsealed roads being in rural areas, I would seek additional funding to bring forward their construction.

It’s important to continue the upgrade of community halls and parks and keeping towns tidy.

Managing traffic and providing efficient parking options to support both business and residents is vital.

Unfortunately, rural areas are subject to motor bike speeding and noise pollution that requires a community awareness program as to the distressing impact often requiring police intervention.

Encouraging residents to refrain from illegal dumping of waste, which is an eye sore and costly for council to clean up, requires an urgent resolution.

In the longer term I would like to develop more parks and bike ways for safe outdoor recreation activities for all age groups.

2. If a large delegation of your constituents form a group to fight for a separate hinterland council, would you support their cause and why?

Firstly, I would want to be educated to the reason why we need to separate.

Tribalism is antiquated.

“We don’t get our fair share of the pie” or “we have different aspirations to our Coastal neighbours” could appear more to be resentment than reason.

The loss of rate base income the coastal communities contribute toward the Hinterland supporting long term infrastructure needs would be very costly.

Where does the money come from to subsidise the breakaway? We already share regional water resources and other infrastructure which would need to be costed.

Being a part of a larger Council representing 500,000.00 people seeking State or Federal funding for major facilities or lifestyle protection has more chance of success than 60 thousand residents.

I recommend the Hinterland Councillors unite in strongly promoting the virtues of the hinterland within Council as being the lungs and lifeblood of the region, and demand and fight for the needs and aspirations of this community. I prefer cooperation to division on any matter.

However, I have not heard all the argument and would, as your representative, be open minded to debate with the community learning their well-informed options and go from there.

There may be a time in due course for a separation. Having input to, and taking serious ownership and enforcement of your town plan is essential.

3. What is something you feel council has done really well in Division 5, and what would you do to make sure that success continues?

As a resident Council staff have been helpful in resolving enquiries I had in relation to council related concerns i.e. cleaning blocked drains and grading local roads on request.

I’m happy with all the listed below achievements and works in progress currently being undertaken by Council in my townships.

I support Cr McKay’s funding for major projects within Division 5 including: • $2.65 million to continue the Palmwoods Streetscape project • $500,000 for the long-awaited upgrade of McGilchrist Road in Eudlo to a sealed standard, and • $85,000 for survey and design work of the north section in Chevallum. It’s fantastic to see this link from Eudlo to the University of the Sunshine Coast taking shape and coming to fruition. As Cr. Jenny McKay states “This is just one of many ways we are working to shape a healthy,smart, creative community here on the Sunshine Coast.”

• $69,000 for detailed design works for the Nambour Woombye District sports facility • along with the $29,500 to upgrade and seal section of Perrins Road, Eudlo.

I wish to continue the good work already being done by building good relationships with the Division 5 communities, councillors and staff and continue to maximise every opportunity to deliver the best outcomes for the unique hinterland villages of Division 5.

4. Tell us what makes you the best candidate for Division 5?

Division 5 is the jewel in the crown of the Sunshine Coast.

Its stunning scenery and natural appeal is second to none. Liveability is up among some of the best locations in the country and our collection of unique and treasured communities offers a very diverse and enviable portfolio of business, recreation and industry.

Division 5 deserves not just a representative but a true leader.

I have vision, compassion, strength of character and a willingness to go the extra mile to make great things happen.

Delivering results in our division (for the immediate and longterm future) requires skill and tenacity in negotiating with all levels of government as well as being able to work in close consultation with community groups and local organisations.

My absolute priority is to make sure that we have a strong voice in council and Division 5 receives the necessary funding allocations and level of support I firmly believe it so much deserves.

There are valuable things I have learnt over the past 8 years in observing the current councillor. Jenny McKay. They are the necessity to stay close to the people, engage widely, listen genuinely and demonstrate the tenacity to continually prosecute positive outcomes for the Hinterland.

My wife and I moved to the Sunshine Coast, fifteen years ago, escaping city life, quite literally for the greener pastures of Maleny.

I currently live in a neighbouring division in a suburb called Mountain Creek. In nominating as a candidate for councillor, I believe it’s important, no actually it’s essential, to have a genuine affinity with the division you seek to represent.

Since moving to the Sunshine Coast my wife and family have spent more time living and working in Maleny than anywhere. In fact, it was the Sunshine Coast hinterland that convinced us to move from Sydney to, quite literally, Maleny’s greener pastures.

Maleny and other hinterland towns are often more readily recognisable for what they once were. As you arrive in town, Maleny’s street art steel cows celebrate a proud dairy heritage, vibrant murals depict Woombye’s Cobb & Co days and the train in Palmwood’s Kolora Park recognises rail’s importance to a once burgeoning agricultural industry.

Like most things, over time, towns change, so it begs the question: “What will we be known for in the future?”

While the role of council is often reduced to the alliterative phrase of 'roads, rates and rubbish', I wish to look beyond the basics to how council might facilitate the community to achieve bigger goals, a preserved environment, equity of services and opportunity, sustainable economy, and caring and compassionate communities.

To me it’s all about helping each community create its own future.

2. If a large delegation of your constituents form a group to fight for a separate hinterland council, would you support their cause and why?

It is everyone’s right to create movements seeking to make positive change for residents. The right way to do that is via the political process, as we saw with the de-amalgamation process of the Noosa Shire from the Sunshine Coast Council. A political process that would ultimately be a decision for a future state government.

Calls for a separate hinterland council have the potential to create a significant distraction to the job I am currently proposing to fill, that is as councillor for Division 5 of the Sunshine Coast Council. My aim is to serve the residents of Division 5 to the absolute best of my ability in the here and now and not on something which might be and would be beyond my control.

In my view it would be wrong to divert attention away from the commitments I have made during this campaign onto something so substantial and far reaching during a sitting term which was not a foundation element of my election platform.

One can’t serve two masters.

3. What is something you feel council has done really well in Division 5, and what would you do to make sure that success continues?

Council has runs on the board with some major projects which overtime will benefit the residents and businesses

of Division 5. The creation of the solar farm is a very clear commitment to address rising power costs, reduce council’s carbon footprint and demonstrate direct action on climate change, especially when neither the state or federal government pitched in to help.

Council has also has some great environmental programs such as the Conservations Estate Purchasing program, probably the largest in South East Queensland, the land for wildlife program and the Blue Heart carbon capture initiative.

Local agricultural producers can look forward to greater and quicker access to export markets for their produce once the expanded Sunshine Coast Airport comes on stream in May this year.

There will also be new opportunities for knowledge based industries and entrepreneurs with the International Undersea Broadband Cable soon to be operational.

These are all great future initiatives but do they mean that the day to day services and facilities in Division 5 take a back seat?

I believe in the equity of delivery of services by council.

It’s fine for council to have these region shaping programs to benefit us all in the future, just don’t forget about the hinterland residents along the way.

4. Tell us what makes you the best candidate for Division 5?

The Sunshine Coast faces many challenges, like our need to deal with the consequences of faster than expected population growth while maintaining the character of our towns, our treasured lifestyle and precious environment.

There is a desire for greater consultation with residents and businesses on decisions that directly affect them.

We need equity in divisional funding and not playing favourites to ensure each town and community gets their fair share.

We must hold state and federal governments accountable for infrastructure and services in line with the population and their responsibilities.

So, with all this ahead, it’s critical to elect a determined, knowledgeable and qualified candidate as your representative  someone with the ability to listen and articulate each case robustly and convincingly on behalf of hinterland residents.

From my time in media, I have learnt many things from observing current councillor Jenny McKay. The necessity to stay close to the people, engage widely, listen genuinely and demonstrate the tenacity to continually prosecute for positive hinterland outcomes, even when it appears the tide is against you.

In me you will see the same resolve. The hinterland is not the coastal strip. There are different priorities and additional needs, issues and considerations for those living west of the Bruce Highway.

I will ensure residents are heard and that hinterland communities remain relevant and share in the success of the modern Sunshine Coast.

James Grimard I am an independent and have no political allegiances. I’m running as an independent candidate so that our farmers, family businesses and local industry can prosper once again.

Our region should be represented by locals who do not have hidden agendas, large corporate funding or any obligation to interstate organisations.

Politicians need to acknowledge that they represent and work for the local residents of the Sunshine Coast region. In an area like ours it is imperative that we keep party politics out of local government.

It’s becoming extremely apparent that the local community is very disturbed by the lack of employment opportunities that our region provides.

In addition, locals are united in their concerns facing the local farming industry. Our local farmers have been without government support for too long and it’s time to change that.

Born and raised on the Sunshine Coast, I have a passion for public service and hold a Bachelor of Commerce from Bond University.

Before deciding to run for local government, I worked as a consultant in the Brisbane CBD specialising in human resources services within the life sciences field and have worked extensively in business-to-business sales. I live at Mount Mellum.

I would immediately increase the support to our local farmers. This isn’t just a local issue, it’s a regional issue that needs to be acted on instantly. Our farmers need all the support that they can get. They’re doing it tough and many are too proud to ask for help.

Over the past 10 years we’ve seen an exponential increase in the number of farm closures.

This is very concerning given that it serves as the backbone of our region. If we don’t have local producers supplying our demand then we will be left to either starve or import foreign produce (God help us). We’re all in this together, we’re all accountable.

Growing up on a local farm and being a third generation Sunshine Coast resident, I understand the importance of community participation for local producers. I also understand and value the relationship between our regional agricultural sector and the government, a relationship that is unfortunately in dire straits.

We need to address the elephant in the room. The government has neglected our farmers for too long. They have in many ways betrayed our local producers for cheap and nasty foreign multinational companies.

We need a serious change in priorities from our politicians.

What do they value if not our regional heritage?

Councillor is always beholden to their constituents. As a democratic leader, I would always act on the needs expressed by those in our region.

We need to remind our political leaders that it is their duty to serve in the interests of the people that they are representing - not in the interests of their own pockets.

I also acknowledge that a few ‘loud voices’ don’t necessarily represent the majority regarding public opinion.

Regarding the issue of a separate council, I currently think that our Division acts as a good counterbalance in the Sunshine Coast Council. We as a Division need to realise the amount of influence that we wield.

Our vote counts.

We can determine the balance of power throughout the entire Sunshine Coast, it’s just a matter of whether or not we’re willing to execute on it.

As Councillor, I will leverage our underestimated position for the fair distribution of funds to our region.

Unlike previous years, we will no longer be neglected by a Council that favours coastal regions. The Hinterland Community Deserves Better!

3. What is something you feel council has done really well in Division 5, and what would you do to make sure that success continues?

Ensuring the protection and sustainability of our Hinterland Community.

I ensure that our beautiful farms, rainforests and parks will remain untouched for as long as I am Councillor.

I stand strongly as a proud supporter of our incredible environment and value this as the leading asset of our Hinterland Community.

A sustainable and protected region will always be prioritized over residential development.

I’m fighting to protect our community, not break it down with endless developments that only benefit interstate property developers.

My proposals include: • increasing available grants to farms; and • implementing further access to nature walks and encouraging the use of renewable energy throughout our region.

With these policies implemented, we will be able to continue the sustainability and protection of our beautiful region.

4. Tell us what makes you the best candidate for Division 5?

I’m fighting for our youth and our future.

I’m deeply concerned about the lack of opportunities facing our young families and, in turn, our youth.

As your councillor, I will work with our local businesses to create work placement programs for those young Sunshine Coast residents who are entering the work force.

I will also push for more vocational training in the region so that our locals have an outlet to learn and refine a particular skill.

As a third generation regional Sunshine Coast resident, I am determined to restore the strength of our local agricultural industry. Our farmers have done it tough for far too long. Many are too proud to ask for help, so it is upon us as a community to increase the available funding and support for them.

As your councillor, I will only support appropriate development. As we experience further population growth, it will be absolutely vital that we do not ruin our beautiful countryside with mass development.

I am 100% focussed on ensuring that our region maintains its heritage and cultural significance. I will not, and do not, support overdevelopment.

Winston Johnston I will implement improved parking facilities to keep residents and visitors shopping locally instead of travelling to coastal shopping complexes.

Residing in Maleny, I believe I am ideally located to service Division 5, a huge rural division with at least eight distinct towns and diverse communities. Travelling between Maleny, Nambour and Caloundra for council meetings means that every area could be serviced personally.

We are not second-class citizens just because we choose to live west of the Bruce Highway. Our residents deserve facilities and infrastructure standards comparable to those enjoyed on the coastal strip. I will be a strong advocate for our people and for our area.

I plan to attend as many community meetings as possible to even better understand how I can represent residents’ interests.

I am a lifelong hinterland resident, businessman, community worker and former Caloundra City Councillor.

Born, educated and raised near Maleny, I know each area of Division 5 well.

I established my insurance brokerage – Your Insurance Broker – as a small business in Maleny, successfully expanding to service the Sunshine Coast hinterland, Caloundra and Brisbane.

My wife Helen and I, have two children. Daughter Rachel is a global human resources manager and son Winston is a software development manager in California.

I have continually been an active community worker and a keen supporter of sporting and community groups.

I am a past president and life member of Maleny Show Society and have held numerous leadership roles in Lions, Rotary, the Chamber of Commerce, Maleny District Sport and Recreation and state school P&Cs. I have held positions on the Caloundra Maroochy Water Supply Board, Sunshine Coast Tourism and Development Board, Sunshine Coast hospital boards, Sunshine Coast University site planning committee and general insurance industry councils.

I spent nine years as a Division 2 councillor representing Maleny and Landsborough, becoming chairman of the tourism, town planning and development committees, responsible for the implementation of town plan reviews and local area plans for coastal and hinterland areas.

I am sharply aware that hinterland residents want a councillor who understands and is passionate about sustainable tourism while creating an environment for business and agricultural success in our many towns and districts in Division 5.

As a councillor I will plan and debate strongly to deliver better roads, parks, footpath linkages and improved maintenance of council assets, including greater weed control.

Winston Johnston - candidate for Division 5 1. What town do you live in and what is an issue you would address in that town if elected to Sunshine Coast Council?

I am a lifelong resident of Division 5 having lived in both Woombye and Maleny. Currently, my wife Helen and I live in Maleny.

Significant issues in Montville, Maleny, Witta, Conondale and districts are the lack of car parking; the need for additional footpaths and connecting links; regular maintenance of parks, roads and streets; control of invasive weeds; establishment of an off-lead dog area; town plan amendments to better cater for low cost housing; a wider range of home-based occupations; and broadening the ability of farmers to establish agricultural based industries, manufacturing and homestay facilities.

In addition, residents want the main street revamp completed, a toilet provided in Cooke Park, pedestrian crossing upgrades, support for the provision of additional sporting amenities and greater emphasis on protection of the environment and waterways. Signage needs upgrading and intersections cleared of overgrown weeds and trees, as well as trees pruned so that school buses are not damaged.

There are still many gravel roads and many need sealing to provide safe travel and to control the dust problem.

Finally, Maleny Library is the highest usage library on the Sunshine Coast and residents are angry that the proposed $2.8 million upgrade has been delayed due to projects being undertaken on the coastal strip.

2. If a large delegation of your constituents form a group to fight for a separate hinterland council, would you support their cause and why?

This is a difficult question to answer because as a Candidate I do not yet have access to statistical data which would enable detailed consideration of the issue.

During extensive doorknocking it has only been raised on two occasions. My current concern is the disparity between the level of services provided east and west of the Bruce Highway. Sunshine Coast Council has a Legislated Duty to provide a fair distribution of funds for services and capital works. This distribution should be based upon need, not upon the quantum of rates collected in each Division.

Unfortunately, we all missed a great opportunity to lobby for a Rural Hinterland Council when the State Government merged the three Councils to create the Sunshine Coast Regional Council.

There are many advantages in being part of a Council with an annual budget of $848 million. However should the next Council continue to disadvantage Hinterland Communities, I believe an argument for the establishment of a separate Hinterland Council will gain strong community support and I would certainly be a strong advocate if it proves to be as a viable standalone entity.

3. What is something you feel council has done really well in Division 5, and what would you do to make sure that success continues?

Council has an excellent Environment Policy and has acquired many valuable and environmentally sensitive areas to maintain biodiversity and green buffer areas separating urban developments.

I will continually advocate for continued but sensible acquisitions as well as for a high level of maintenance and protection for these areas.

Council’s application to establish a Biosphere encompassing the Sunshine Coast Council area is well advanced and deserving of community support.

Mary Cairncross Park and Maroochy Botanic Gardens are valuable community assets and deserving of continued upgrading and protection.

It is important that the areas purchased adjacent to the rear of Mary Cairncross Park are quickly planted by suitable species which will enable further protection and species diversity for the reserve and the wildlife that live in and visit the area.

Redevelopment of Palmwoods Business Area is impressive and Council must rapidly bring other Division 5 Town Business Areas up to a comparable level.

Maleny Precinct and the Obi Obi Boardwalk and Heritage Trail are progressing well. The old bails need refurbishment and the Heritage Trail must be completed to provide access for people regardless of their level of mobility.

Overall gravel roads are well maintained, but the current sealing program must be rapidly accelerated.

4. Tell us what makes you the best candidate for Division 5?

As the coronavirus pandemic worsens for Australians and our economy rapidly slides into recession, voters in Division 5 need an experienced, common sense and practical councillor during the next council term.

It will take years for an inexperienced councillor to learn the skills of effective representation. Our long term, experienced rural councillors, McKay and Rogerson, are retiring, therefore the learning curve will be even longer as there will be no guiding hand to provide knowledgeable advice and guidance.

As a lifetime local community worker and business man and during nine years as a Caloundra City councillor, I personally experienced the difficulties of 17% interest rates and three recessions. Through hard work, planning and prudent management my business not only survived those tough times, it grew and prospered.

If you vote for me and I become your representative on council, I already possess valuable extensive local knowledge, business and financial skills, as well as time saving experience and knowledge of local government.

Fortunately, I can and will be immediately effective in understanding the difficulties facing council, business and voters in helping us all to financially survive and prosper during the difficult months and years ahead.

There are two main ways you can vote 1. Pre-poll voting is where you cast your ballot before the election day at one of the pre-polling stations. The locations of these pre-polling stations are listed below.

It is a tremendous honour to serve this region as its Mayor.

It is a responsibility to our community that I never take for granted.

First and foremost, I am your representative – a servant leader.

Since I was first elected in 2012, the Council which I have led has pursued a balanced agenda focussed on liveability, opportunity and prosperity – underpinned by my commitment to preserving our beautiful natural environment.

Our Sunshine Coast today has moved ahead in leaps and bounds from where it was in 2012.

We have grown our economy by over $5 billion. We have seen over 23,000 new jobs created in our high-value industries. Business confidence remains at one of the high.

Household incomes have increased by more than 25%. We are home to some of the nation’s most highly recognised and credentialed environmental sustainability projects, like our solar farm and our Australian-first Blue Carbon partnership.

The Council I lead will always be at the forefront of exploring new horizons, generating new ideas, developing community pride, preserving our natural landscapes and ecosystems and building opportunities for current and future generations.

My ethos is pretty simple – to not only do well but do good.

My commitments for the next four years are: Community Making it easier for our community to move around I will advocate for State and Federal Government investment in the preferred public transport solution that will link our suburbs and is in line with what our growing region needs and deserves. I will also work collaboratively with the Federal Members to push for funding for a fast rail solution that will better connect our Sunshine Coast with

Candidate for Mayor Brisbane and the rest of South East Queensland.

Drawing a line in the sand when it comes to urban development In the next term of Council, the Queensland Government will conduct the five-year review of the South East Queensland Regional Plan. I will be advocating strongly that there be no further expansion of the Urban Footprint in the Sunshine Coast area in the life of the next regional plan. We need to consolidate development within the existing designated urban areas – and not allow our Hinterland or other vulnerable areas to be exposed to potential urban sprawl.

Providing more opportunities for young people Even though our region has been fortunate over the last eight years to see the economy grow, business confidence improve significantly, and new jobs be created, youth unemployment still remains unacceptably high.

While new employment options will emerge from commitments like the international submarine cable network, the expansion of the Airport and the new city centre, there is a need for more immediate solutions to reduce youth unemployment and the exodus of young people from the region More sealed roads in the Hinterland In mid-2022 Council will retire its borrowings for the Sunshine Coast Airport Expansion Project.

I will be encouraging the next Council to develop and commit from 1 July 2022, to a dedicated annual increase to the current funding to progressively seal many of the 590 kilometres of unsealed local roads on the Sunshine Coast.

This will make it safer for residents in our rural areas, reduce dust and noise and improve the connectivity of residents in these areas to the services and facilities they need.

Environment Growing our conservation estate for current and future generations Nearly one third of the total area of land acquired by Council using the Environment Levy has been purchased since I became Mayor in 2012. This is a significant investment in the region’s important environmental assets, habitat corridors and in preserving the liveability of our region.

In the next term, I will be seeking the support of Council to increase by a further 10% the total conservation lands acquired using the Environment Levy More land for wildlife Our Land for Wildlife program exceeded our target set in 2016 and now have over 1100 private landowners participating in this program and managing their land with conservation objectives in mind. During the next term of Council, I will work with my Councillor colleagues and staff to grow the number of participants in this nation-leading program to 1300 landowners.

Continuing our real actions on climate change Since 2012, our Council have been on a very clear sustainability journey and over that time, we have implemented an extensive array of real actions to further strengthen the region’s response to climate change. From being the first government in mainland Australia to offset

more than 100% of its electricity consumption with energy from our solar farm to our exciting Blue Heart partnership.

Entrenching our Inter-urban break In the 2017 South East Queensland Regional Plan, through my advocacy efforts as a member of the SEQ Regional Planning Committee, I was able to help convince the State Government to clearly identify on the map of SEQ, the extent of our inter-urban break. While this is a positive step forward, it is not enough and will not guarantee the extent of the inter-urban break is not reduced in the future.

As Mayor, I will be pushing the Queensland Government for statutory recognition and protection of the existing interurban break, so that it cannot easily be eroded by future governments or councils.

Improving the health of our waterways Our waterways are a defining feature of our coastal and hinterland landscapes. However, they cannot be taken for granted and we must remain ever vigilant to improve their health as our region continues to grow and accommodate more people. This is one of the reasons why I have vehemently opposed the development of Halls Creek, given the unacceptable impacts it would have on the Pumicestone Passage Economy Continue to support new employment opportunities Encourage new investment in our seven high-value industries and continue to leverage the important infrastructure investments that have been made by Council and other tiers of government and the private sector.

These are the bedrock for continuing to generate jobs on our Sunshine Coast.

Securing government commitments to our long overdue Exhibition and Convention Centre More than 20 years of planning and studies have provided a comprehensive base for the demand, scope and functions for an Exhibition and Convention Centre in Maroochydore.

Council Maintaining Council’s strong financial position A significant priority for me has been – and will continue to be – driving the discipline needed to ensure Council remains at the forefront of financial sustainability.

To this end, I commit to supporting the budget and management principle that Council’s strong financial sustainability rating must remain in place at the end of the next term of Council.

Gidday - to the Hinterland!

This is Don Innes typing at you.

I proudly announced my intention to run for Mayor on Australia Day and promptly “celebrated” by heading out to work and distributing my own first campaign pamphlet – on a public holiday!

I won’t go back over any of that here, but I mention it because it tells a specific story about me.

My first quality is that of hard work, and I already believe that our wonderful Hinterland sees that in me - every week. I have been really pleased to stop and chat with so many lovely residents and am already quite chuffed at the genuine support and the encouragement that I have received from you all.

Unfortunately, I also have to openly acknowledge that so many of you are making your vehement opposition to the incumbent known …. quite forcefully as it goes.

That is - the appetite for change is now on a wave of growing community opinion.

I am completely positive about the Hinterland and its various towns vibrant place in the wider picture that is the whole Sun-e Coast, and my second quality will be to bring that picture into a focus for the real benefit of west of the highway. That the Hinterland must be treated less as a nice Sunday drive and more as a powerhouse of employment, growth and opportunity.

As diverse homes for farmers and retirees, for first homeowners and property investors, for renters and new settlers, for commuters and residents, for the young and the not so young, indeed for all colours and creeds.

That makes each and every one of you reading this into a key stakeholder - in the jargon that Council likes to employ.

My third quality will be to fight tirelessly, without respite, for the rights of all! You are all key stakeholders to me, and I will make sure that is also true of the rest of any new Council.

Candidate for Mayor Rights to not be harried and harassed over parking, your footpath, your plans, your cars, your granny flat, your animals, even your Christmas decorations - or by a divisive Council administration that bases its procedures on an apparent desire to turn community members on each other through “complaints”.

My fourth personal quality is that of an accomplished writer and of an engaging public speaker – both of which will be required in significant volumes in a new Council.

But my fifth quality exists in complete silence! I love to read (as you also obviously do - if you got this far) and so I will be thoroughly going over policy and local laws to remove unfair and inconsistent practices.

My sixth quality is simple. I listen.

Over the campaign I will have the chance to explain my ideas and policies regularly, so I am taking this opportunity to just mention a few. If you have any questions then please feel free to get in contact.

1. An end to unjustified “secret” meetings.

2. A true VISION 2020 focus that includes the wider Hinterland.

3. A complete and sweeping review of local laws to remove abusive and unfair practices. Particularly verge policy, compliance and enforcement, and in planning.

4. A withdrawal from the LGAQ. 5. A thorough independent investigation into the CEO contract renewal - almost two years ahead of time, and an end to candidates publishing nomination endorsements from the CEO. 6. A VISION 2020 focus on rectifying the great ongoing financial catastrophe that has occurred under the current administration. Debt must be reined in.

7. An end to Council competing against small business, and often acting as a market predator.

8. Winding back the corporate structures at the failed CBD project and saving millions annually.

9. Holding Council accountable for the “good deal” with Pallisades at the Airport.

10. A sweeping review of the Offices of Mayor and CEO. VISION 2020 is about looking at the now and seeing the truth, not the spin and politically convenient rhetoric.

VISION 2020 is about seeing beyond the lies and misrepresentations to bring out into the open the awful culture of community division that permeates Sun-e Coast Council ATM. VISION 2020 will lift the lid on a Council administration that flourishes on secrecy.

VISION 2020 will give the hard working and loyal Council front line staff their good reputation back.

I have made the decision to stand for Mayor because I believe in fighting for our future. Many people I have spoken with have said they feel we are losing our lifestyle, local community concerns are being ignored and there is a lack of transparency in the current council. Fact Sheet 2020 ELECTIONS – COVID-19 PROTECTION MEASURES The Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) has carefully considered the impact of COVID-19 on the conduct of the 2020 local government elections and Currumbin and Bundamba by-elections. This includes the declaration of COVID-19 as a global pandemic and the decisions by the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) on 13 and 15 March 2020 that organised non-essential mass gatherings of over 500 people should be cancelled.

After considering this decision and taking advice from Queensland Health, the ECQ has determined that, based on current advice available, the elections should proceed. This is on the basis that: the elections facilitate an essential service by providing for continuity of democratic representation for Queenslanders; and static gatherings at polling places are not likely to exceed the 500 person threshold set by COAG. The ECQ acknowledges that this is a unique situation for Queensland electors and will be enhancing its service delivery approach for these elections to promote public health and confidence in participating in the electoral process. This includes additional personal hygiene precautions and people management measures for both electors and polling officials at polling booths.

Remember, voting is compulsory.

✓ Queensland Health’s personal hygiene guidelines are to be followed by all people at polling booths including voters and polling officials. Copies of these guidelines will be distributed to and available at early voting centres and polling booths.

✓ Hand sanitiser will be available for voters and polling officials at early voting centres and polling booths. ✓ Additional cleaning of polling booth areas will be undertaken to ensure that all surfaces are regularly disinfected. ✓ Voters are encouraged to bring their own pen or pencil with them to vote, although pencils will still be available to all voters.

✓ Early voting will be open from Monday 16 March until Friday 27 March. Voters are encouraged to vote during the early voting period at a time convenient to them, where possible outside of peak periods. Voters should note that numbers are usually higher at lunch time or the end of the day. ✓ Early voting centres are generally open from 9am to 5pm during the first week of early voting, and from 9am to 6pm during the second week. ECQ will be seeking to extend voting hours where possible to do so to provide additional options for voters. ✓ Polling officials will be monitoring the number of people in attendance at polling booths to make sure there are fewer than 500 people present at any one time.

Based on voting numbers at previous elections, it is highly unlikely that there will be more than 500 people attending individual booths at any one time. Additional measures such as queue control will be put in place for polling booths where high volumes of voters are expected.

✓ Vote issuing tables and polling screens will be positioned to maximise distance between all people in attendance, based on the space constraints of the polling booths. ✓ ECQ will be employing additional staff to assist with managing queues and to help people cast their vote in the most efficient manner. This includes ensuring that high risk members of the public, such as elderly people, receive additional assistance.

✓ Telephone voting is available for certain eligible voters, including anyone who has been advised by a medical practitioner to remain in isolation during the election period due to exposure to COVID-19.
