JURORS For our 2021 GAS Student Exhibition, we would like to thank jurors, Christopher Day, Sarah Gilbert, and Corrie Siegel for their time and expertise. They reviewed 50+ applications from students from over 10 different countries to select awards. They were impressed by the level and range of work that was submitted and congratulate all students who have participated.

Christopher Day Traditions of art and history, Day’s work exemplifies this immersion of personal preoccupation, a unique compositional line of enquiry and an emotive invitation to viewers to engage with that enquiry. The resulting observances confront viewers with a synthesis of new and often shocking realities. Day’s work is created in response to his own conflicting feelings of belonging as a man of mixed-race, which are compounded by the limited representation of diverse narratives by and of people of colour in art history and popular culture. Day’s practice investigates complex topics and social tensions through the use of the personal; often creating works that hold colour and light and the potential of how these incredible objects reflect the subtle and not-so-subtle integrations of ideas into individual lives and identities.

Sarah Gilbert Originally from Rochester, New York, Gilbert took her first glass class in 2000. She received her BFA from Rochester Institute of Technology in 2005, and in 2006 she moved out to the Pacific Northwest to work as a member of the Museum of Glass Hot Shop team in Tacoma, Washington. She has been there ever since, assisting artists from around the world in making their work in addition to developing her own practice. Her work was included in Young Glass, at the Glasmuseet Ebeltoft in Denmark, Transparency: An LGBTQ+ Glass Art Exhibition, and she recently had a solo show at Vetri called Perfect Strangers. When not in the studio she can be found exploring the Pacific Northwest with her forever puppy Pistol. Corrie Siegel Corrie Siegel is the Executive Director of the Museum of Neon Art. Her work as a museum professional is rooted in collaboration, creativity, and pedagogy. Siegel’s community based approach is informed by her experience as a gallery director, exhibit curator, museum educator, museum administrator, and artist. As a Co-Founder and Director for Actual Size Los Angeles, Siegel has championed contemporary art and audience engagement for over a decade. In addition, she has worked in museum education and administration at LACMA, The LA Philharmonic, The Armory Center for The Arts, The Norton Simon Museum, The Fowler Museum, and The Corita Art Center. In her role as Executive Director of MONA Siegel deepens community connections to MONA, supports new artistic production and experimentation, and safe-guards historic signage and art through new educational, artistic, and funding initiatives.
