Welcome

TO THE SEPTEMBER 2026 EDITION!

WELCOME TO THE SEPTEMBER EDITION OF FENESTRA BUILD As we move into autumn, the construction industry continues to face a familiar combination of challenges and opportunities. Changing regulations, increasing expectations around building performance and sustainability, and continued pressure on costs mean that making the right decisions at design and specification stage has never been more important. For architects, builders, developers and installers, collaboration across the supply chain is becoming increasingly critical. The products we specify and install – from windows, doors and glazing through to building envelope systems and associated technologies – must not only deliver aesthetically, but also meet increasingly demanding requirements for performance, efficiency, compliance and longevity.

We hope you enjoy this edition and, as always, we welcome your projects, opinions and industry perspectives for future issues.

KOMBIMATEC FACILITATES FLEXIBLE CORNER CLEANING FOR LESS (SPACE AND MONEY) Kombimatec has introduced a competitively priced, programmable corner cleaning machine capable of processing up to 25 differently shaped PVC profiles, taking up a minimum footprint – perfect for factories where space is at a premium. The EV443/CNC is designed for fabricators working with a diverse range of profile systems who also need to make efficient use of factory space. Measuring just 86cm x 98cm, excluding its frame support table, the machine combines a remarkably small footprint with the flexibility to clean a wide range of window frames, sashes, doors, patios, vertical sliders and bifold joints.

Spring-loaded 3mm groove knives track the profile surfaces, enabling the machine to groove both the top and bottom faces and mill the outside edge within a single operating cycle. Full two-axis interpolation also allows decorative profile shapes to be accurately milled, delivering a consistently high-quality finish across a broad range of profile designs. Programs can be created directly through the machine’s colour touchscreen interface or prepared offline on a computer using simple text files and then downloaded to the machine. The touchscreen also provides operational controls and diagnostics, while an ethernet ready version supports remote technical assistance. The ability to create and adjust programs without repeatedly investing in specially manufactured tooling not only helps to reduce operating costs but gives fabricators greater flexibility when introducing new profiles or refining the finish. Space is provided for an optional decorative milling blade designed to suit the fabricator’s chosen window system. Special knives are also available for processing woodgrain and foiled products, with the option to isolate the groove-knife stations to protect foiled surfaces. The main milling blade can likewise be isolated when groove-only operation is required.

9

• • • • BACK TO CONTENTS • • • •

Rather than relying on a large selection of expensive, profile-specific tooling, the EV443/CNC uses a 250mm TCT milling blade, controlled by a two-axis CNC electronic drive system, to clean the outside edge of the welded corner. This CNC technology is more commonly associated with considerably more expensive corner cleaning machinery.

23 DOORS INVESTS IN FOM CNC TECHNOLOGY TO SUPPORT CONTINUED GROWTH Aluminium fabricator 23 Doors has further strengthened its manufacturing capabilities with the installation of a FOM Industrie FMC 120 CNC Machining Centre from Haffner. The investment forms part of the next phase of growth for 23 Doors, which manufactures a comprehensive range of bespoke aluminium bifolding doors, sliding doors, entrance doors, windows and rooflights from its Manchester-based factory. As 23 Doors continues to grow, increased automation is playing an important role in supporting greater production volumes while maintaining the quality and consistency on which the company has built its reputation.

“The machine installation went extremely well, and it has been a pleasure dealing with Haffner throughout the project. The team made the whole process very straightforward and we are delighted with the machine.” The FOM Industrie FMC 120 is a three-axis CNC machining centre designed to carry out drilling and milling operations on aluminium profiles. Its pneumatically positioned worktable operates at 0°, 90° and 180°, allowing machining on three sides of the profile. The machine combines precision CNC technology with a compact footprint, making it particularly suited to growing aluminium fabricators looking to increase automation, productivity and machining consistency. Mike Moulds, Business Development Manager at Haffner, commented: “23 Doors is a progressive aluminium fabricator and the FMC 120 is an excellent fit for the business. It gives Peter and his team the additional machining capacity they need today, with the flexibility to support their future production requirements.”

11

• • • • BACK TO CONTENTS • • • •

Peter Colclough, Director at 23 Doors, said: “The FMC 120 is an important investment for us and will support the next phase of our growth. Increasing our machining capability will allow us to further improve our output and efficiency.”

DOORS AND VENTILATION When replacing doors (just like windows) compliance with Building Regulations is critical for fabricators and installers to achieve the ventilation standards set out in Approve Document F (means of ventilation), which was updated and legally enacted in June 2022. To improve the air quality, thermal comfort and wellbeing of homeowners, most doors should include trickle vents (on the doors or frames) in particular where the door opens into a habitable space and especially when the door is the only opening in a room which has no windows. Other situations where trickle vents are advised for doors is when there are few windows or small windows in a habitable room.

• • • • BACK TO CONTENTS • • • •

No matter which situation, installing trickle vents on doors and windows is the most practical, viable and economical ventilation solution to meet the regulatory requirements. Over the last decade, Glazpart’s Link Vent has become the trickle vent of choice for window and door companies. To ensure compliance with Building Regulations, the Link Vent range sizes include 5000, 4000 and 2500 EQA and it can be fitted to UPVC, aluminium and timber doors/frames. The clever design of the Link Vent makes it simple to install and user friendly for both opening and closing – the innovative closing action allows the closure plate to be positioned so that it reduces draughts by directing air away from occupants. Smart design, easy fitting, and functionality are fundamental features but it is the huge choice of colours and decorative finishes that sets Glazpart apart from the competition. The Link Vent is perfect for doors as the colours and woodgrains can be perfectly matched to blend in perfectly with the door’s overall design and look. The colours/finishes are extremely stable and resistant to UV, meaning the vents hold their colour in extreme weather conditions and constant exposure to the elements of weather, without noticeable fading. Glazpart’s Link Vent premium finish ranges are also available in handy packs of either 10 canopies or internal vents, enabling companies only buy the stock they need and add more value, both in terms of revenue and kerb appeal for homeowners.

THE KEY QUESTIONS EVERY CONSUMER SHOULD ASK A PROSPECTIVE INSTALLER As window companies compete for attention, Dave Mecham, Managing Director of FENSA, says asking the right questions can help consumers choose the right product and installer for them, amid a barrage of information and advice. For homeowners looking to replace their windows and doors, a dip into the internet will bring up thousands of companies, products and opinions. With a wealth of information available that can be contradictory and at times, overwhelming, FENSA’s aim is to guide consumers to make an informed decision, helping them to select the best product for them, and the best installer to fit it. Finding the right installer is a vital part of the process and asking the right questions is key to achieving this.

First and foremost, homeowners should establish whether the company they are considering is FENSA registered. Possessing specialist skill sets that general builders, handymen and DIY enthusiasts do not have, FENSA registered installers can install windows, doors and associated products competently, paying attention to the relevant technical considerations. Bay windows, for example, often take on a structural element within the houses they feature in, requiring experienced people with the right know-how to take them out and replace them successfully. By ensuring their chosen installer is FENSA registered, consumers can proceed with confidence that the installation team will be up to the job. What products will be installed? Homeowners should ask exactly which windows, doors or other products are being proposed and do some independent research before making a decision.

HAFFNER DELIVERS IMPRESSIVE MACHINERY SALES GROWTH Leading machinery innovators Haffner Ltd has reported impressive growth in machinery sales, with sales revenue increasing by 48% this year against a challenging market backdrop. The latest figures continue a strong growth trajectory, with machinery sales revenue now 66% higher than in 2024. Haffner has also maintained its margins, underlining the strength of the company’s performance.

• • • • BACK TO CONTENTS • • • •

Matt Thomas, Managing Director of Haffner, said: “The market remains challenging, which makes a 48% increase in machinery sales revenue this year particularly significant. With sales revenue now 66% higher than in 2024, it demonstrates that fabricators are continuing to invest where they can see a clear and measurable return.” “What is particularly important to us is the quality of that growth. These figures are based purely on new machinery sales across our Haffner, Graf Synergy and Fom Industrie ranges and exclude our service and spare parts revenue. We have also maintained our margins, which further demonstrates the strength of our performance.” Haffner attributes its continued growth to the strength of its machinery portfolio and fabricators’ increasing focus on automation, productivity and manufacturing efficiencies. Representing Haffner, Graf Synergy and Fom Industrie machinery, the company offers a comprehensive portfolio for PVC-U and aluminium fabrication. Matt continued: “Investment decisions are understandably being scrutinised carefully, but fabricators recognise that the right machinery can deliver significant commercial benefits. Whether that is reducing labour dependency, increasing output, improving finish quality or creating additional manufacturing capacity, there remains a strong appetite to invest where the business case is clear.” “Having Haffner, Graf Synergy and Fom Industrie within our portfolio means we can offer solutions across virtually every area of PVC-U and aluminium fabrication and identify the machinery that will deliver the greatest value for each operation.” Haffner is a multi-award-winning supplier of PVC-U and aluminium fabrication machinery and is widely recognised as the home of automation for the fenestration industry. Its portfolio spans individual machines through to sophisticated automated fabrication machining centres, backed by in-house technical expertise, training and aftersales support.
