What do I LOVE in 2023? Well, the first thing I love is that we are celebrating our 15th Anniversary of GLADYS this year! WOW! What a milestone for my company! We would have never made it this far without all of the support from our loyal readers, subscribers, advertisers and our entire creative teams!

And so, I wanted to dedicate this issue to all of YOU who have loved our magazine and supported us throughout the years! With so many challenges and through some crazy times we have faced as a business, we are thrilled to be able to continue bringing you the latest in fashion, beauty, travel and share inspiring stories from around the world! We are thriving because of the LOVE you show to us! And, it was because of a Mother’s LOVE (my mother’s love) that gave me the idea to launch Gladys 15 years ago, in her name, in her honor, because let’s face it, our first love is our mother’s love.

The next thing I LOVE is our Women To Watch! We are showcasing the It Girls, Newsmakers, Rule-Breakers + Scene Stealers for 2023! But what I do know is that we all need to LOVE EACH DAY through it all.

Say hello to Contessa Miami, a widely celebrated Italian concept restaurant in the Miami Design District. The restaurant occupies a two-story space in the famed development located at 111 NE 41st Street and open for lunch, and dinner. Contessa Miami is rooted in the Northern Italian aesthetics established at the original location in Boston, but with a fresh, tailored design that speaks to the high fashion of the Design District. With high-gloss teak woodwork detailing that echoes traditional Italian riva boat design, the two-story restaurant transports guests to Lake Como circa 1960. As guests enter the first floor through layers of emerald striped drapery and lush plantings, they are greeted by a rich, jewel-toned marble floor in a bold Deco pattern. Pink Venetian plaster on the walls and ceiling set the stage, along with Italian Murano light fixtures and custom furniture. An elegant and impressive curved grand staircase guides guests upstairs, as they move past a curation of original oil paintings, historic photographs, and vintage gilded wall mirrors that have been lit from above with a soft warm glow.

Inspired by the old-world sophistication of Northern Italy’s iconic villas and estates, Contessa is a classic yet thoroughly contemporary dining destination by MFG Co-Founders and creative forces Jeff Zalaznick,Mario Carbone, and Rich Torrisi. The original location of Contessa debuted last year on the rooftop of The Newbury Boston and quickly cemented its reputation as one of the most glamorous and exceptional Italian restaurants in America. “ The Veuve Clicquot Experience”

Barbe Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin was an entrepreneur, innovator, risk taker and rule breaker and known as the Grande Dame of Champagne. Madame Veuve Clicquot took the reins of the champagne house founded by her father in law in 1772. Widowed at only twenty-seven years of age, at a time when women had few rights and were not even allowed to open a bank account, she ran and expanded an international firm. Furthermore, she turned her name into a brand of excellence and made it shine the world over.

Madame Clicquot was a perfectionist, an engaged leader and a prolific inventor driven by a sense of curiosity. An eternal optimist, she always saw the sunny side of things. She was determined to “depend on no one” and to succeed in offering customers of her champagne “only one quality... the finest.

As we celebrate its’ 250th Anniversary, Maison Veuve Clicquot gathered ten female artists to pay tribute to its icon and I had the amazing opportunity to be part of this experience that was transported to the city of Beverly Hills.

I was transported into the Veuve world and was able to see its history. I am a huge Champagne enthusiast so this was such a treat to walk through each room and read about everything and even got to see the first order book of Madame Clicquot.

The art was spectacular and of course I took a lot of pictures, how could I not? They also had a café with wonderful pairings so I had the lobster roll with a nice glass of rose. It was so refreshing.

I had such an amazing time and felt uplifted to know that this powerful house had a strong woman to make it happen! Let’s be inspired and continue to thrive in whatever is it that we do! Be the strength and difference that you want to see in the world.

Located in NoMad, Bear Donut is a reimagined retro American donut shop with South Korean flair. Their new breakfast menu includes a delightful spin on a donut and a waffle fused; the Doffle! OLD JOHN’S

Born in 1951 at 66th and Broadway, this little classic diner back in the day, fast became a hot spot for celebrities and locals alike. Sadly, the diner was forced to shut down during The Pandemic in 2020, but boldly relocated, reopened and renovated in 2021 by Louis Skibar, a former employee of Old John’s.

In the spirit of authenticity and to respect and preserve the history of Old John’s, key elements were kept such as the Art Deco lighting, mosaic tile floor and the original ceiling. Even many staff members of times past are still in attendance, serving you with unmistakable old school appeal. WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO PURSUE A CAREER IN FASHION?

I’ve always had an interest in fashion. Working in the retail business really opened my eyes to styling, storytelling through fashion and working with clients. I always knew I wanted to work in the Fashion industry, I just didn’t know which position to play. It wasn’t until I went to school to study design, that I realized I was meant to be a Designer.

ARE YOU SELF TAUGHT OR DID YOU STUDY FASHION DESIGN?

I studied fashion design at Phoenix College and earned an Arts degree and a Fashion Design degree.

WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU WHEN YOU ARE CREATING DESIGNS?

When I need inspiration, I hop in my car, take a drive and put on music. Certain songs just hit differently. I can create an entire collection with just one song.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF BEING IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY? Creating a design from virtually nothing that will be connected to someone’s special moment forever!

WHAT MAKES YOUR FASHIONS UNIQUE?

The intricate details; all my designs have a certain individuality. No two designs are the same. Custom-made for your special event is my forte.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE DESIGN THUS FAR?

As a designer, it’s difficult to choose a favorite because I love them all, equally. If I had to choose one, the Milano dress is my favorite piece so far. I had the opportunity to study fashion in Treviso, Italy this past summer. While there, I visited Milan. I hand-selected a gorgeous, gold beaded fabric meant for a goddess. It’s a one-of-a-kind, unique fabric and is waiting to be paired with the right client for the perfect event. I can’t wait to see it walk the red carpet!

HOW DO YOU COLLABORATE WITH CLIENTS TO CREATE THEIR DREAM DESIGN? During our consultation, I listen to details about my client’s upcoming event and their vision. I take a look at their closet, noting the colors that they are drawn to and feel the best in.  After that, I come up with a digital design and then start building a 3D version of it.

WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON TODAY?

Expanding my team with other creatives who want to contribute their love of design and skills to The Melissa Torres brand. We also have our sights set on showcasing a collection at New York Fashion Week.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?

Designing doesn’t feel like a job. I love what I do and I enjoy every aspect of it; from creating a sketch to seeing it come to life on the day of the client’s event.

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR YOUR SHOOT WITH GLADYS?

My goal for every collection is to level up from the previous one. For this project, I challenged myself to try something new. A lot of the techniques you see in this collection were firsts for me: the fabric manipulation in the pleated tucks, color blocking, and creating fabric patterns with acrylics. I wanted to create looks that my future clients can see themselves wearing to their special events.

WHO HAVE BEEN THE GREATEST INFLUENCES ON YOUR CAREER?

Jennifer Lopez is a person who I admire for her grit and success as a businesswoman. As a Mexican-American girl, growing up in a single-parent home and at one point, on welfare assistance, I thought early on, “if she can do big things, so can I!”  It’s been impressive to see Jennifer’s relentless spirit, the many dynamic hats she wears, and the amazing projects she has produced. I’m also inspired by her longevity in a business that she loves; all things I hope to accomplish on my journey.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT IN YOUR CAREER SO FAR? Being on the cover of Gladys: A national inspirational and fashion magazine! Two concepts that I love the most are Inspiration and Fashion! In 2020, one of my designs was featured in Gladys Magazine’s Love issue and I said to myself, “next time, I’ll be on the cover”!

WHAT IS THE MOTTO YOU LIVE BY? Think it, believe it, receive it.

WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS?

Success for me isn’t about simply having a checklist and marking off milestones. Success is looking at the big picture with the intention of leaving a memorable legacy. If I can accomplish these five intentions throughout my life, then I can say I was successful:

-Waking up with gratitude that I get the opportunity to do what I love every day.

-Building meaningful relationships with clients & friends.

-Bringing joy to others through design.

-Helping my community by giving back, not just seasonally, but continuously; year-round.

-Inspiring others to dream big and to realize that anything is possible. WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WOULD STILL LIKE TO LEARN?

I love learning! I’m always open to expanding my knowledge in design techniques. It’s important to continue improving my skill set so that I can meet the needs of my clients.

10 YEARS FROM NOW, WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO HAVE ACHIEVED IN THE INDUSTRY? There is so much I want to accomplish in 10 years. Remember: think it, believe it, receive it! In ten years: In this dynamic industry, I have built a team of dedicated and passionate designers with a family feel.  I have cultivated meaningful, professional relationships with my clients and I am part of their special events. I have a private studio in Scottsdale, Arizona where clients can shop exclusive, seasonal designs or have a custom design created. My studio has a 6-month, rent-free space for other creatives to use; a space for encouraging and uplifting one another. I am part of the costume design team for films & TV shows.  I have expanded my business throughout the U.S. and around the world. I have a consistent involvement in my community which includes supporting underprivileged communities, I provide private design lessons, as well as lessons in the art of manifesting.

AND, SINCE THIS IS OUR LOVE ISSUE, NAME 3 THINGS YOU LOVE: Sky watching at night, anything related to the paranormal and conversations with people who also have big dreams and who are actually making strides towards achieving them because it inspires me!

Emma Rose Roberts is an American actress, model and singer. She is the daughter of actor Eric Roberts and niece of Julia Roberts. Roberts then began to focus on her acting career, starring in the film Aquamarine and later as the title character in the 2007 film Nancy Drew Looking for more mature roles, Roberts appeared in the 2009 drama Lymelife and went on to several more films, often in leading roles. In March of 2022, Autumn Kinkade and her mom, Dawn, learned of a program being built just an hour from their home in Oklahoma. The Transition Academy at A New Leaf was built to emulate a 2 year college experience for individuals with autism and developmental disabilities. Autumn was born at 28 weeks weighing 1lb 12oz and is a surviving twin. Because of her prematurity, she has cerebral palsy and uses a walker. Dawn submitted an application to the academy and after a couple of interviews, Autumn was selected as 1 of the first 11 students to move in to this ground breaking program. Each student has their own dorm room and attends classes daily at the local community College in which they are learning the skills needed to live an independent life and be able to work within the community earning a competitive wage. The program is also important for students to build strong relationships and perhaps meet their special someone along the way. That is what Autumn and her best friend Jake (who has autism) have found. With the love and support from their families and staff, hopefully all the students from The Transition Academy can lead happy and productive lives after graduation. This program is really important as statistics show that 74% of individuals with disabilities never move out of their parents home. We can only hope there will be more programs like this built across the US.

Dominique Earle-Coppola was the 2014 Gladys Girl for the month of April and went on to become the Gladys Girl of the Year 2014. This she holds close to her heart and attributes this honor with her successful career as a hair and make up designer. Having become a Gladys Girl helped her with her drive and gave her the confidence she needed.

Dominique met her husband Phil the same year she was the Gladys Girl of the Year. They actually met through her older Bobby. Bobby and Phil both car enthusiasts, met at a dealership and became fast friends. He introduced Phil to his sisters and he and Dominique clicked immediately. Once they had both built up their careers, on December 21, 2021, “he asked and she said yes.”

On September 10, 2022, they were married at St. Leonard’s Church in Boston’s “Little Italy”, the North End.

It was truly a fairytale wedding surrounded with love. The most important family and friends were there to celebrate this very special time in their lives.

The DPA VIP-Emmy Lounge is The A-list favorite place to get the best & most exclusive gifts aka Swag during the award season. Nathalie Dubois curates the list to ensure the right ambiance for all the nominees and press worldwide.

I was very lucky to be invited to the VIP Lounge at the Luxe Hotel for Gladys and everything was very elevated upon arrival from valet parking to check-in, everything was effortless which brings a fabulous experience.

Upon my arrival I had some food from the Kozet Kuisine an authentic Middle Eastern kitchen. I tasted the tabouli, eech and hummus. Everything was so delicious and then I tasted the desserts and was in heaven.

There was one beverage that caught my eye. It was the RAD8 French collagen tea in a can. We all know that collagen is such an important thing to have, so this was a great discovery and I’m so obsessed over it. I don’t have to mix collagen into my morning water, I can just drink the tea at anytime and it is available in different flavors. My favorite one was the pineapple.

I was introduced to Bullets N Beads a Canadian jewelry line with a story that really means a lot. They are a veteran owned and operated ethical jewelry brand that utilizes real previously fired bullets and bullet casings, Swarovski crystals and semi precious stones to create a small limited edition collection. Each piece is handmade in Canada by a veteran and partial proceeds are donated back to the organizations that help veterans and first responders dealing with the effects of PTSD. This is jewelry with a cause so you can be fashionable with a good reason.

I then had delicious and refreshing tasting from Diane Salem Rendez Vous Champagne that had three exclusive choices; the rose, that is always a classic, the Brut and the extra Brut, which was my favorite.

However the highlight for me was to get the real honey from the honeycomb. I have never ever experienced removing the wax and tasting real fresh honey which has wonderful benefits and it was so delicious. It was such a moment when the honey just drips. Rozaliya Heinen originally comes from Bulgaria, Europe and currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California. She became an entrepreneur at a very young age and holds a university degree in business management. For 13 years Rozaliya successfully managed one of Bulgaria’s largest fashion and modeling agencies. Her agency was also a leading producer for fashion television programs and contests. Rozaliya became a highly respected leader in her country’s fashion industry. Jenny and the City “ The Titanic Experience”

IIt was 1997 when the movie “Titanic” was released and we all waited in line at the theater to watch something that was once real; we knew the history, the mystery and the tragedy. Nonetheless we couldn’t wait to see if something magical amongst that fatal moment could have existed. As we all sat through over three hours of excitement, love, suspense, hope, grief, we felt all of those emotions. For the record, I’ve now seen the movie over ten times and I still cry.

I’m always fascinated by history and movies that are based on true facts and I think ins a way are very magical. So that being said, I couldn’t wait to visit and explore The Titanic Experience

Upon check in we received a ticket to the white star to embark the journey. The exhibit shows a lot of real items from brochures, post cards, pictures, uniforms, table settings, silverware and the different class rooms, furniture, halls and of course the famous stairs.

The exhibit was curated to perfection from room to room, sort of a museum but yet a set that transports you to a different time and place. I was able to admire the wardrobe that was used in the movie by the two main characters Jack and Rose, as you know I love fashion so this was a real treat!

I took a lot of pictures because I wanted to share with you my experience. I had mixed feelings because I really was enjoying looking at the history yet I was aware of the pain and tremendous losses. It was very unique and emotional and definitely worth seeing for a lot of reasons and at the end we just have to remind ourselves to value life and every moment that comes with it.

Dylan Ratzlaff is a up-and-coming TV and film actress who starred as the lead role of ‘Rachel’ in Lifetime’s “An Amish Sin”. Inspired by true stories, the movie follows Rachel, an Amish teen who refuses to obey her parent’s command that she marry the man who abused her. She tries to escape the harshness of the 18th century lifestyle she has grown up in to find her voice and independence.

Ratzlaff was born and raised in Abbotsford, BC, Canada. Because of her spirited and vivacious nature, her parents started her in dance classes at the age of three. She is trained in jazz, lyrical, contemporary, modern, ballet, hip hop, tap, circus, tumbling and acro. From a young age, Dylan has been a storyteller. She has a passion to be a part of stories and projects that matter and are inspiring. Through dancing, she was approached to do commercials. Her raw talent gave her an opportunity to pivot, where she fell in love with the artistry of acting.

She began her professional dance career working on projects such as Disney Channel’s “Descendants 3” alongside Kenny Ortega and “A Cinderella Story: Christmas Wish.” Ratzlaff made her acting debut in CBC’s “The Next Step” where she starred as ‘Jacquie.’ Her other television credits include ABC’s “A Million Little Things,” Lifetime’s “Doomsday Mom,” and Netflix’s “Honey Girls.” Most recently, she has joined the award-winning Freeform series “Cruel Summer” for its second season.

When she is not in front of a camera, Dylan finds joy in spending time with her family and volunteering through her church. In her free time, Dylan explores hiking trails in Vancouver. When traveling, she loves to discover new coffee shops and brings that passion back home with her to her at-home coffee bar, an essential part of her morning routine. As her career continues to grow, Dylan ensures to move with light & grace.

Laura wanted to document her adventures. To all the fans of the TV show “The Golden Girls”, this experience will warm your hearts. The Golden Girls Kitchen has arrived in Beverly Hills, and it will be touring from New York, Miami, San Francisco to Chicago.

The moment I knew it was here, I was more than ready to get the whole experience and re-live a little of the past. I took my mom on a date, as I knew she would be so surprised and thrilled. We arrived and everyone was very welcoming. We got a chance to see a little of the original sets including the kitchen and the rooms, a little blast from the past back when the phones were attached to the walls and life was not as electronic as the one we live in. We took a lot of pictures and had lots of laughs.

Then we sat down for our lunch date with our fabulous Golden mains menu that included Sophia’s Lasagna al forno either with meat or vegan option, the Lanai, a Miami style Cuban sandwich, the Rose Marie combo of soup and salad or the Rusty anchor omelet sandwich. Of course I choose the lasagna because I love pasta and it was a must! Mama lulu had the Cuban sandwich with the thick French fries and half of my lasagna. The food was very tasty and the environment was from another time and place.

I indulged in a nice pina colada from the Shady Pines bar and we both had the cheesecake because as we know Cheesecake fixes everything. However there were other options on the menu like the clown sundae, Blanche’s Georgia style cookie and Sperheoven Krispies. It’s always good to take the time and appreciate the past during our present. If you have a chance to see it, it will make you smile!

It’s time to celebrate life and Hollywood ‘s Lifestyle award events; yes at it’s best. The location was the iconic Yamashiro restaurant in the heart of Hollywood with boasting spectacular city views, stunning architecture and tranquil gardens. Los Angeles’s leading sustainable creative producer, Debbie Durkin brought the magic and the fun and as per usual the best food. This time it was the delicious and decadent sushi boats, my favorite garlic noodles and wontons were amongst the great Asian selection catered by Yamashiro’s Chef.

Upon my arrival, I felt at home. Everyone was so welcoming and I just felt like I knew everyone. They were giving VIP drips but for those you had to sit down for at least thirty minutes and clearly I was more on the social side of going everywhere, but no worries I will do it the next time and share my experience, even if I’m scared of needles. I was then introduced to Casa Luigi an Italian prosecco that comes in cans, so you can take it anywhere and it was so refreshing. It’s actually available in one of my favorite local markets, so it was such a great find! I always have it.

There was a photo booth for fun selfies, make up artist artists and hairstylist to glam us up. I also found my new favorite shades from Mo Eyewear and of course living in Sunny California you need to own good sunglasses.

The event was filled with lots of familiar faces amongst them Farrah Abraham, Patricia Kara, Sawyer Holt, Olivier Alexander, Porscha Coleman, Kinya Claiborne, Shaman Durek Verrett, George Satsidis and Chris Gialanella

It was such a wonderful time and can’t wait for the next one.
