Welcome to The 47th Martin Hanson Rio Tinto & QAL Martin Hanson Memorial Art Awards 2022!
This event has become one of regional Queensland’s most eagerly anticipated art awards that keeps growing each year.
Named after the highly respected local businessman, Martin Hanson (1923-1976), I have no doubt Mr Hanson would be extremely proud and humbled if he could see just how far and wide his legacy has stretched across nearly 50 years.
This legacy has inspired thousands of people who have entered The Awards since 1976.
The growth of The Martin Hanson Memorial Art Awards has also been greatly assisted by the ongoing and generous support of individuals, businesses and industry – thanks again to Rio Tinto and Queensland Alumina Limited (QAL) for their continuing sponsorship.
However, it is the people entering that makes The Awards, so, with that in mind, I want to thank all artists who have entered this year and wish you the best of luck.
It’s also my pleasure to welcome Karina Devine to Gladstone who will judge The 47th Rio Tinto & QAL Martin Hanson Memorial Art Awards.
Karina is Director at Warwick Art Gallery – a position she has held for the past 16 years – and has extensive experience as an art educator and gallery manager working in regional Queensland.
Gladstone Regional Art Gallery & Museum (GRAGM) will display the exhibition of entries until Saturday 28 January 2023, so I encourage you to tell your friends and family to come and view the fantastic artwork on display between now and then, and vote for your favourite works to enter The QAL People’s Choice Awards competition draw.
Last, but certainly not least, thank you to the team at GRAGM who work tirelessly to ensure The Martin Hanson Memorial Art Awards run as smoothly as possible and the legacy of Martin Hanson lives on for generations to come.

MEET THIS YEAR’S JUDGE
Karina Devine has twenty five years’ experience as an art educator and gallery manager working in regional Queensland. She has university qualifications in Visual Arts, Education and Media Studies.
She moved from secondary school teaching into the gallery sector in 2005 when she was appointed Centre Manager of Dogwood Crossing @ Miles. Keen to find a role where she could further pursue her passion for community, she moved to Warwick in the Southern Downs region of Queensland. Karina has been employed as the Director of Warwick Art Gallery since 2006.
Karina is committed to contributing to the growth of regional communities by embracing the lifestyle of Queensland country towns and striving to achieve equity and sustainability for rural Queensland through the arts.
Participating in collaborations between the arts sector, tourism, education and businesses in her community motivates Karina to advocate for regional arts workers and artists. This dedication is demonstrated by her commitment, as Chairperson, to the Museum and Galleries Queensland Board since 2017.
