Presidents Welcome It is with enormous pleasure that I welcome you to our 56th annual Gladstone Harbour Festival. From its small beginings in 1963, our Gladstone Harbour Festival has evolved into a major community celebration in our city. Twelve months of planning will see the GPC Marina Parklands come alive with five nights and three days of enjoyment for the whole community. We are extremely proud of this year’s programme of events and I am sure you will find delight in the range and quality of the entertainment and activities on offer. To stage this FREE event, it takes an enormous amount of resources, sponsorship and input, from a lot of organisations and people. The Harbour Festival would not be possible without the generous support and commitment of Gladstone Ports Corporation, Gladstone Regional Council, Sponsors and Supporters for their ongoing dedication and commitment to our iconic annual community event. This year’s celebrations also mark a major milestone, the 70th anniversary of the annual Brisbane to Gladstone Blue Water Classic Yacht Race with a large number of yachts taking part in the 308-nautical mile race to the finish line in Gladstone. I congratulate Mayor Matt Burnett for his efforts to bring all the stakeholders of the yacht race together, to work as a group to promote and showcase the Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race and the festivals that are run in conjunction with the blue water classic. The success and longevity of our festival is reliant on many factors, a great volunteer base is a major part of the festival surviving long term. While out and about at this year’s festival if you see a festival volunteer, take a moment and say thank you. These people give up their holidays and time each and every year, to oversee the running of the Harbour Festival. Our community would be the poorer without you. Thank you for your commitment and friendship. Stay up to date with all that is happening with all the latest news about this year’s event by visiting our website or follow us on Facebook which is being constantly updated. Have a happy and safe Easter at this year’s 56th Harbour Festival.

In loving memory of Pauline Kiernan OUR FRIEND AND FESTIVAL LIFE MEMBER Pauline’s Association with the Harbour Festival started with her mate Meg in 1989. In 2017 Pauline had achieved a huge milestone of 28 years of volunteering for her Festival and community. Harbour Festival each year was a mammoth task, which she took to relish. Scrubbing and cleaning dongas, and setting up for the week long festivities. Thank you Pauline, for all of the wonderful times and memories you gave us. You will forever hold a special place in the heart of the Gladstone Harbour Festival.

Mayor’s Welcome Welcome, everyone, to the 2018 Gladstone Harbour Festival! The 56th annual Gladstone Harbour Festival program blends exciting new additions and perennial family favourites to ensure that there is something for everyone to enjoy. It would not be the harbour festival without the Great Raft Regatta, Street Parade, Mardi Gras and Talent Quest and I am pleased to see these ever-popular events are back again this year. Adding to the party atmosphere is the Pop Up Arts Village which gives festival goers the chance to showcase their musical skills and participate in other fun, hands-on art-based activities. The Larrikin Puppet Show is also new to the program and its talented puppeteers, showcasing skills learnt in the USA alongside their Sesame Street and Muppets mentors, are sure to string along many spectators. The Endless Summer Beach Party on Fantastic Friday Night and Kisstroyer on Sensational Saturday Night will keep the party vibe turned up to 11! Our youngest residents won’t be forgotten with the Gladstone Ports Corporation’s Family Fun Night bringing Curtis the Turtle, a firework extravaganza, live interactive shows Hey Duggee and PJ Masks, and a live stage production of Peppa Pig. And, of course, we have the fantastic 2018 Qantaslink Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race - the reason why the harbour festival kicked off in the first place! A strong fleet has gathered to contest the 70th Brisbane to Gladstone and I am sure many of you, like me, are eagerly awaiting the return of these beautiful sailing vessels of all ages and sizes to our harbour. Following the success of last year’s inaugural live stream, the opening stages of this year’s race will also be taken to the world via the internet, this time including the multihulls as well as the monohulls. Thank you to our generous sponsors for their invaluable support and to Gladstone Festivals and Events staff and volunteers who banded together to deliver this event.

And thank you to the Gladstone Region community and visitors to our region whose patronage, year after year, is vital to the festival’s success.

Qantaslink 70th Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race One of Australia’s most significant and largest yacht race’s, the QantasLink Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race, enters its milestone 70th year in 2018. The first race featured just seven vessels, five of which were supplied with pigeons from Brisbane’s Homing Pigeon Club, to assist with position reporting birds were released twice a day. Since then, the Race has seen its popularity and prestige grow with hundreds of vessels competing for honours each year. The largest ever fleet was registered in 1998 for the Golden Anniversary of the race with 226 vessels and 1356 crew setting sail. In 2004, ‘Skandia' skippered by Grant Wharington set a new race record with a course time of 20hrs 24mins 50secs and an average speed of 15.09 knots. The record stands to this day despite the efforts of numerous attempts by more advanced and faster boats; to date the weather has just not been on their side. This year, local favourite ‘Black Jack’ will once again attempt to beat the record. The crew have come close before, but this year bring their new 100foot super maxi that has been optimised for the expected race conditions. In addition to the Grand Prix boats at the front of the fleet, there will also be a classic yacht contingent celebrating the 70th anniversary. Gladstone boat’ Wistari’ will be reaching her own historic milestone of 50 appearances in the Queensland race whilst the current record holder for the most races entered, ‘Laurabada’, will maintain her status with her 51st start. With a fleet of up to 70 yachts expected, the organisers, Queensland Cruising Yacht Club, will be live streaming the start of the Race via the race website www.brisbanetogladstone.com and Facebook live and free from six separate cameras, drones and a professional commentary team. Will this be the year the race record falls?
