Together in the same direction as a family

W

e start this new school year as a community that has reconsidered its commitment to educational service, a community in which each of its members fulfills a role that allows the achievement of goals for this year 2021, a lively community and creative in her daily work, a community open to communication and to the accompaniment of the person to achieve their comprehensive training, marked by a spirit of faith, feeling like brothers in Christ and children of Mary Heavenly Mother, our Patron the Virgin of Carmen.

The situation our country is experiencing, leads us to develop educational work virtually or remotely. But we cannot stop mentioning that we have learned over ten months of meetings, dialogues, workshops reflection and discussion in the different areas of each of the grades to:

• Understand that care begins with us, we must take care to be able to serve others and carry out good actions.

• Understand that dialogue and respect will allow us to communicate, accept and grow in knowledge and faith. Value the moments of encounters of human and spiritual formation.

• Live the family spirit, not only to fulfill our obligations and goals but to generate ties of love and appreciation for our parents and to strengthen sincere and true friendship of brothers.

I invite you to walk this path keeping in mind at all times these three aspects, which will allow us to advance with great confidence and security, let’s revalue the commitment as Carmelites and Peruvians this year of the bicentennial.

May the Virgin of Carmen bless you and accompany ...

A start of classes with hope and enthusiasm

T

his 2021 we start classes with joy, hoping that it will be a better year, trusting that our Most Holy Mother, the Lady of Carmen, accompany us at all times.

For the entire educational community, it was a very special day because we met again between fellow teachers and students, to see and listen to us again after a few well-deserved vacation can be summed up in a single word: joy.

As Peruvians, this is a year that fills us with pride because we will celebrate the Bicentennial of the Independence of Peru.

We entrust ourselves to God and Our Lady of Carmen and we ask them to bless Peru, our families and may this year be very useful.

Lord Jesus, we trust in you.

We start the classes with a smile

W

e face this new beginning with encouragement and hope; with energy and wisdom of our children, who with their purity encourage us to take life and each day with joy, finding new ways to feel good and make others feel good.

From the Primary level we have wanted to emphasize the importance of re-bonding affectively and emotionally this year, both with the students, as with parents. We’re convinced that a good relationship between the members of the educational community will benefit learning. We started the year with conviction and hope. We will always be united through prayer and the values that we as Carmelites share.

May the Virgin of Carmen continue to accompany and protecting us.

Approaching the virtual teaching

W

e start a 2021 school year with enthusiasm and expectation.

We prepare ourselves by organizing the workshop Approaching Virtuality aimed at our Kindergarten students who were joining our school for the first time.

Our main objective was that the little ones have a prior approach to virtuality in a playful and entertaining way. The teaching staff conducted the sessions and each one had one theme per day.

The children were able to participate in craft sessions, minichef, body expression games, experiments, among others. It gave us great satisfaction to meet them and thus begin to establish links to awaken that interest in learning and taking advantage of to give them a warm welcome to their Carmelitas School.

We thank all the parents who accompanied and made it possible for their little ones to participate in the workshop Approaching Virtuality.

Solemnity of Saint Joseph, husband of the Virgin Mary, and patron of the Universal Church

A

s a Church and as a Carmelite educational community, on the 19th of March we celebrate the Solemnity of Saint Joseph, husband of the Virgin Mary and Patron of the Universal Church. This year is special because it is the 150 anniversary of their patronage and protection to God’s people.

Saint Joseph, known as the saint of silence, together with Jesus and Mary, has lived in such a close intimacy with the mystery of the incarnation; and with a noble and obedient heart to God’s plan, he welcomed Maria, as his wife, and assumed the role of father of the child Jesus, our Savior.

Hardworking man, he shows us the way of the renunciation of ourselves, of the daily responsibility, the acting in silence so that the family live and grow. His authority as husband and protector manifests in unconditional service, thus becoming a mirror of life Carmelite mystique.

As Carmelites, we virtually unite to celebrate the Holy Eucharist and so entrust the life of our community to his protection, and so that for his intercession, cure and heal our people scourged by the pandemic.

May his faith, his works and his love for family, guide us and make us dream of a more just, fraternal and supportive society, and with a better world, where we are all brothers.

T

his 2021 the Catholic Church celebrates the Year of Saint Joseph. Pope Francis invites us to discover in him, that loving, tender and welcoming father, that in silence and simplicity, disposes his heart to the will of God. Accepting this invitation, on February 24th we brought together virtually all the personnel who work in our Institution, to live together an experience of prayer and reflection around the figure of Saint Joseph.

Throughout the morning we had the opportunity to share two presentations about the testimony of life and the teachings of Saint Joseph; likewise, we had a space at home for personal reflection, where we asked ourselves, who is Saint Joseph to me?

What does it tell me for my personal and family life? And what does he invite me to as a member of this educational community?

At the end of the morning we came together as a family, to celebrate the Holy Mass together and ask the Lord, through the intercession of Saint Joseph, to accompany us in the difficult circumstances that we find ourselves living and to allow us, following the example of Joseph, to discover the signs of his love in the everyday of our lives.

Holy Week in Carmelitas

T

his year we share the celebration of Holy Week as a family, from our homes, uniting as a Church through the different reflections and activities of our Parish Nuestra Señora del Carmen.

As a Catholic school, we mark the beginning of our educational activities with a Mass for Easter, a ceremony officiated by Father Miguel Bacigalupo and Father Floristan Guerrero, with the assistance of the Carmelite family.

Heading to the Bicentennial

C

armelite Family Towards the Bicentennial, was the theme that from the Social Sciences area we enthusiastically executed in 2019 preparing for 2021. The remote complexity has given a twist to the analysis of this important celebration, in it we do not focus on the past history, but in our construction of the present and look to the future.

Our Carmelite students, empathic with the local and global context, are resilient to change and put into practice various strategies that allow them to continue exercising their digital citizenship from different projects.

As an educational community, family and school, we value the effort of each member of our common home in building a free and sovereign homeland, and we hope that this year 2021 we embrace our diversity and value our national identity.

Peruvians who gestated the Bicentennial of Peru

Pedro Vilca Apaza, “The Indomitable Puma”

P

edro Vilca Apaza was born in the town of Morco Orco, 20 kilometers from the city of Azángaro, in June 1741, son of Don Cleto Vilcapaza and Juana Alarcón.

Dedicated to the silver trade between the cities of Potosí and Cusco, he became friends with José Gabriel Condorcanqui. In those trips he was able to observe the conditions of exploitation suffered by his Peruvian brothers.

Since the beginning of the rebellion of Túpac Amaru II against the Spanish crown, in November 1780, Pedro Vilca assumes the position of lieutenant, carrying out his liberating activities in the areas of Azángaro and Carabaya until he was taken prisoner.

On April 8th, 1782, his death sentence was carried out, being dismembered by four horses, and in his last breath he exclaimed: “By this sun, learn to die like me.”

For this fact, Pedro Vilca is recognized as Precursor, Prócer and Martyr of the Emancipation of Peru and every April 8th is celebrating the anniversary of his heroic sacrifice.

Father Raúl Maraví, O. Carm.

Provincial Commissioner of Peru

T

he Order of Carmelites has a new Provincial Commissioner in Peru, Father Raúl Maraví, and from here we want to share a little of his life since he was called to serve God. Father Raúl Maraví entered the Carmelite Order in March 1988 to begin his training as a friar. Before, he had studied economics and from a very young age he had participated in the Miraflores parish in the youth prayer group “Follow me”.

In 1992, at the end of his novitiate year, he professed his first religious vows, and the community assigned him for two years to work at the Carmelitas School.

That same year, he formed a youth group in the Miraflores parish, and develops a famous confirmation program that included different schools in the city.

This group and program operate to this day in our parish.

After finishing his studies in philosophy and theology, he was ordained as a priest in 1997. He then went on to pursue postgraduate studies in the US and Italy.

Between 2003 and 2007, Father Raúl returned to Lima to assume different responsibilities such as President of

the Carmelitas School of Miraflores, Counselor of the Provincial Commissariat of the Carmelites in Peru, professor of Bible and Hebrew at the Faculty of Pontifical and Civil Theology of Lima. He was Director of the Retreat House “Villa Carmelitas”, Promoter of Nuestro Salvador School of José Gálvez and Nuestra Señora del Carmen Parochial School of Barranco, among other responsibilities.

In 2007, Father Raúl was elected General Councilor of the Americas for the Order of Carmelites and was re-elected in 2013 assuming the responsibilities of General Councilor of the Americas, President of the International Commission of Carmelite Schools, President of the International Commission of Laity and Youth Carmelitas, among others.

Since the end of 2019, Father Raúl has returned to Lima, where he currently serves as Provincial Commissioner of Peru and Formator of the professed friars.

A Carmelite forever

T

his year we had to say goodbye to Alberto Varela Anselmi, teacher and dear friend of the Carmelite family, who has shared with us in the classrooms and in Nuestra Señora del Carmen parish.

Alberto has many descendants in our institution, of all of them we will mention CarMUN, a space where our students had the opportunity to develop a global view of the problems of the world and where they knew how to argue their ideas strongly.

Dozens of students participated in his classes, the experiences and sciences learned by these young people are innumerable, but what stood out the most is the affection left in each of his sessions.

A breath for our planet

E

arth Hour has become the largest environmental movement in the world where each person, voluntarily and together with their family, shows that they care about the planet by turning off the lights in their home for an hour.

This movement was born in 2007, when about 2.2 million people in Sydney, Australia, turned off their lights with

the firm desire to call for action so that humanity becomes aware of climate change. This initiative has been replicated for years in dozens of countries such as Peru.

This year the Earth Hour was on March 27th and millions of people around the world put their grain of sand to reduce environmental pollution because: The Earth does matter!

Earth day

E

arth Day is established on April 22nd, 1970 when the first demonstration in favor of caring for the environment is held in the United States. Today this date is celebrated in about 180 countries in the world.

Currently it is also known as International Mother Earth Day, a name agreed by the United Nations in 2009, in which it is sought that every day, each person, becomes aware that we must do something to take care of the planet where we live.

The Catholic Church has always been a participant in caring for the Earth and, in his Encyclical Letter Laudato Si’, Pope Francis affectionately calls it our common home and makes a wake-up call not to lower our guard and to be vigilant in taking actions that improve the quality of the Earth.

Creation of the flag of Peru

P

eruvians always feel proud when talking about our national flag, our Peruvian flag, since it is not only a symbol but it is a form of representation of all before other nations. It reflects the identity and unity of the people, with equality, prosperity and respect as key points.

If we talk about the meaning of its colors, the red color of the Peruvian flag symbolizes the blood shed by the heroes who fought for the country and its people, while the white color represents freedom, justice, purity of feelings and the peace of the nation.

Since its creation in 1820, by the Liberator José de San Martín, our flag

had several modifications. On February 25th, 1825, during the government of Simón Bolívar, the Constituent Congress finally decreed that the flag kept the three vertical stripes, red at the ends and white in the center, but changing the sun for the Coat of Arms in the middle zone.

Knowing its history allows us to learn about our past and give it the value it deserves, so every July 28th it is placed in our homes with pride.
