FAST FORWARD

TECHNOLOGY WILL CREATE WINNERS AND LOSERS Aftermarket parts distributors must decide now where they want to be on the innovation curve BY JAMES MENZIES

A

ftermarket parts suppliers have an important choice to make: Keep pace with rapid technological change, or risk extinction. That was the warning from Scott Klososky of Future Point of View, when speaking during the recent Heavy-Duty Aftermarket Week in Las Vegas, Nevada. Technology, Klososky said, has gone from being a utility to a weapon. Effectively using that weapon will help suppliers prosper in the current market, he said. Immediate access to informa-

ss 14 2016 TRUXPO SHOW GUIDE

tion has changed how customers source and buy parts. When we were children, Klososky said, we had to ask our parents for information or go to the library to look it up. Now, information about anything is available immediately online. A survey of eight- to 10-year-olds found that they trust information found online more than that gathered from their parents. “A child today believes that an unseen machine will give them a better answer than their parents will give them,” Klososky said. And these are the buyers of the future. A customer looking for aftermarket parts can now find and buy what

they’re looking for with no human interaction. “If they are looking at aftermarket products, they go online and do a search and they will find everyone in the world who distributes what you distribute,” Klososky pointed out. “Everything is becoming very connected.” In the future, we will become even more dependent on technology, he added. We will arrive at homes that communicate with our vehicles to know we’re on the way and will adjust the temperature accordingly.

“The vehicle and the house will talk. That will seem very normal to us. In fact, we’ll be upset if the house didn’t know we were coming home,” Klososky predicted. How does this affect aftermarket parts suppliers? As society becomes more automated, Klososky said suppliers must modernize how they conduct business. Automation will improve efficiencies as well as the profit models of companies. “There is going to be a dramatic shift over the next couple decades over what human beings do - what our value is - versus what computers can do,” he said. Smartphones have become an outboard brain to humans, storing memory and helping us solve problems. Distributors or manufacturers that continue to put out traditional parts catalogues will lose out on business if they’re not distributing information via smartphone as well. “This is what people want to go to for information,” Klososky said of mobile devices. “If you are the third or fourth (supplier) with a mobile app, that’s an issue. This is the only way you’re used to getting information if you’re 35 years old and younger. If you don’t move quickly enough to put your content into a mobile format, you will flat lose market share.” Klososky also spoke of the concept of humalogy - the integration of humans and technology to get things done. Business leaders need to decide where their organization should fit on the humalogy scale. “As leaders, you have to look at your business, look at your processes and say ‘Where is our business on this scale and are we at the right place?’ If you get too far to one side ss 16 2016 TRUXPO SHOW GUIDE

or the other, you will hurt yourself from a productivity or profitability standpoint,” he explained. “Us in leadership positions are not always comfortable with technology. If you are not planning on retiring in the next few years, you have to learn more. You have to figure out how to leverage it because there are absolutely going to be winners and losers.” Effectively leveraging technology allows businesses to amplify profits by reducing costs while at the same time increasing revenues. “Your revenue per employee metric should be going up every year,” Klososky said. “If you don’t do that, you may start experiencing digital Darwinism, where the pace of technological innovation is faster than the speed people will adopt valuable new tools.” Technology is reaching an inflection point where companies will either prosper by mastering new technologies or enter a death spiral, as former stalwarts such as Kodak and Blockbuster Video have done. When it comes to parts distribution, Klososky warned, “This inflection point is getting ready to hit your industry and there will be winners and losers. The good news is, there’s lots of opportunity. The bad news is, some of you won’t take the opportunities.” Even successful companies may fail to act, because they’ve achieved success maintaining the status quo or have become bloated, bu-

reaucratic and move too slowly to keep pace with technological change. Businesses need to decide where they want to be on the innovation curve, Klososky said. He suggested shooting for being on the leading edge – somewhere between the bleeding edge and the laggards, but ahead of the herd, where the majority of competitors will collect. Finally, Klososky urged business leaders to consider what they want their legacy to be. “You have two choices. You’ll have a retirement party where they’re going to say one of two things. They may say, ‘Oh my God, what are we going to do without him? He mixed years of experience in the industry with technological insight to create something that’ll go on another 2030 years.’ Or they might say, ‘Thank God he’s gone. He’s been strangling us for the last five years. Wouldn’t invest in anything.’ You will leave a legacy. If you learn how to be powerful leaders with technology you can make more profits and profits give you more power and stability in the market.” ss

Emerging technologies presenting new aftermarket opportunities BY JAMES MENZIES

R

apidly evolving technology in the trucking industry is creating new opportunities for aftermarket parts and service providers. That was the message from Derek Kaufman, managing partner with Schwartz Advisors and president of C3 Network, when addressing delegates during Heavy-Duty Aftermarket Week, held recently in Las Vegas, Nevada. Kaufman said telematics is the hot technology at the moment, and the aftermarket is rich with opportunity to become a provider of telematics solutions to used truck buyers. Kaufman said there’s a shift underway towards open source architecture, which allows the aftermarket to participate in the space by providing additional apps to ride on top of widely used telematics platforms. “If you embed software in my truck but I can’t use it on the other trucks in my fleet, you haven’t done me a big favour there,” Kaufman said of closed-source telematics platforms. “In my opinion, I think OEMs would prefer to lock all this up and drive all the business to their dealerships, but it would kill their brands. They can’t handle the resulting volume. They need to open up. Even Apple figured that out.” New safety systems - such as lane departure warning systems, lane keep assist and radar-based collision mitigation systems - are also creating opportunities in the aftermarket, Kaufman explained. Noting a property damage accident involving a truck in the US costs an average of US$200,000 and a fatality more than a million, Kaufman said there’s a growing opportunity to support these safety systems in the aftermarket. “The aftermarket can get into it very easily,” Kaufman said, naming companies such as Mobileye as an example. “It’s easy to retrofit into any age truck and it’s a great item for the aftermarket to sell to second and third owners of vehicles.” The same can be said of dash cameras, Kaufman added, or cameras mounted on other areas of the truck to ease backing and prevent trailer and dock damage. Some active safety systems are now enjoying a take rate of 25-40% among new truck buyers, Kaufman said. “The ss 18 2016 TRUXPO SHOW GUIDE

aftermarket opportunities are in warning systems to start. With active systems, the OEM controls all the installation,” he added. Servicing these systems, however, represents another growing aftermarket opportunity, Kaufman added. “Become a risk mitigator for your customers. Provide annual system health inspections and you can play with the first, second and third owners,” he suggested. Kaufman also believes truck platooning will soon present new aftermarket opportunities as well. Truck platoons, which use vehicle-to-vehicle communications to allow two or more trucks to travel closely together, allow the leading truck to reduce its fuel consumption by 4.5% while the second truck improves fuel economy by 7%. The aftermarket will be able to participate in truck platooning by building installation infrastructure and providing the technology to owner/operators, Kaufman suggested. However, he still thinks fully autonomous trucks are a decade or more from becoming widely used in North America. “I believe there’s a mountain of things to figure out before it goes up the road,” he said. Kaufman is more bullish on augmented reality, which he said “is going to change this industry in ways we haven’t thought of.” He’s referring to 4D helmets that technicians will be able to use to more quickly and accurately to troubleshoot vehicles. “This is a whole new opportunity for the aftermarket,” Kaufman said. “Augmented reality ought to be a part of everybody’s aftermarket strategy.” He said there will be a need for suppliers of the hardware and the expertise to use the technology. Already today, the aftermarket is enjoying success supporting aerodynamic equipment for trucks and trailers. Aftermarket parts suppliers can sell trailer skirts and tails, wheel covers and fairings. They can also get involved in supporting efficient powertrains such as those utilizing downspeeding or 6x2 axle configurations. Kaufman urged attendees to become experts in areas of growing demand, including component and subsystem electrification, natural gas tankage and electric hybrids. ss

The FUTURE is PAPERLESS

BY KEN MARK

FOLLOW THE JOURNEY OF THREE CANADIAN CARRIERS TOWARDS DIGITIZED DATA COLLECTION

P

aper documents may provide comfort and familiarity, particularly for motor carrier operations who may have used the same approach to data collection for decades. But they fall short on productivity, efficiency and improving customer service. The industry’s familiar paper intensive approach is also a killer on the environment and does nothing to address carriers’ continuing pain point – finding qualified drivers. An increasing number of carriers, however, are taking the electronic leap of faith and moving to digitized data collection in streamlining several parts of their operations. Here is the story of three carriers and their journey towards implementing digital data in their everyday workflow by leveraging Microdea’s Synergize platform. Surrey, BC-based CPX (Coastal Pacific Xpress) Inc. introduced Microdea’s Synergize in 2002 as a document repository system to replace its paper-based methods for auditing and approving customer orders. Originally, bills for a completed job first had to be stamped or signed and then approved. But before mailing out the invoices, employees had to print and photocopy them as well as attach a proof of delivery. Says CPX IT manager, Clint Hall, “Microdea’s electronic document workflow system, automated our billing processes and streamlined the accounts receivable (AR) billing by eliminating the need to hunt for documents and improved the handling of repetitive orders to ensure that all the necessary components were complete. It enabled us to pull together everything we needed in less than five minutes. Before, it would have taken us eight to 10 hours.” According to Hall, CPX’s process-automation cost savings go beyond just reducing full-time employee counts. He says, “Intangible benefits include accessible and immediate availability of documents – the sooner documents enter the system, the sooner staff can analyze them

ss 24 2016 TRUXPO SHOW GUIDE

and process the data to speed up the whole job.” He adds, “Looking back, the key to introducing workflow automation was our ability to build it step by step rather than going through a single, giant leap to reach our objective. It will enable us to move closer to operating in real-time -- the Holy Grail for all transportation companies.” Mullen Transport deployed Synergize to modernize its accounts payable function. Scanning all its freight-bill related documents enables the firm to index them directly to the bills themselves. It then automatically forwards the relevant ones along with the invoice directly to customers. Mullen saves time by eliminating the need for mail or individual scanning. Says Leslie Rhodes, Aldersyde, AB-based Mullen Trucking LP director of finance and accounting, “Our employees can now directly access documents electronically right from our TMW transportation management software. For example, sales executives can now see exactly what the customer received enabling them to answer questions as they arise. This is quicker and simpler than having to resend documents requested by customers. “It also makes life easier for other employees, one of whom told me, ‘It is much less stressful completing a billing run with Microdea because we know the proper documents will always be sent to the customer.’ ” The bottom line has also been improved by speeding up invoice payments and reducing handling costs. Mullen’s Freight Audit department has lowered expenses thanks to time and postage savings not to mention earlier invoice payments. The last named is critical since it improves corporate cash flow by reducing days sales outstanding (DSO) invoices. In addition, Synergize has eliminated manual filing, which delivers savings by reducing the need for storage, office supplies and employee time. Equally important is the environmental bonus. Says

Rhodes, “It is important that everyone do their part in minimizing waste and reducing our carbon footprint. Microdea has allowed us to go paperless in what is typically a very paper-intensive environment.” Finding the right carriers to partner with can be critical to forming a wider network and handling capacity issues during times of high demand. Moncton NB-based Keltic Transportation Inc. turned to Microdea’s Carrier On-boarding package in standardizing its dealings with each prospective carrier from the very beginning. Since Synergize saves all relevant documents required for vetting, they can be e-mailed or faxed without having employees shuffle paperwork around. Bar codes on each document facilitate quick retrievals. As result, from any workstation Keltic employees can easily retrieve an overview of each carrier revealing its size, location and safety measurement scores pulled from the US Department of Transport’s FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) website. This saves employees time since there is no need to send a carrier package to firms, which did not pass its early-stage requirements only to have them return it later. Says Mike Clements, Keltic’s vice-president corporate operations, “By strengthening our due-diligence procedures, we can pass on important information to our operations department for quicker decisions about carriers that do not meet our standards. While vetting still takes time, we have now standardized how we store and organize related documents. “While we have not established a dollar figure of our savings, we realize that better process organization and standardization have reduced the number of repetitive questions and our need to search for answers.” Founded in 1995, Microdea currently ranks 375th on the Profit Magazine 2015 Top 500 Fastest Growing

Companies in Canada. Says Markham ON-based Microdea CEO Steve Divitkos, “Our target market is carriers with 50 to 500 employees. Currently, our customers are split 50-50 between Canada and the US.” So far, Microdea’s Synergize software suite offers various solutions including those focused on four major backoffice functions including accounts receivable, accounts payable, onboarding carriers and driver recruitment. Besides eliminating paper record keeping, it also delivers solutions for automating and streamlining the storage, handling, and sharing of business files and their contents with internal executives and workers as well as external suppliers, customers, partners, and others. Microdea has recently expanded the Synergize’s toolbox by adding a new solution to address over-the-road carriers’ greatest pain point – how to recruit new drivers. While the software differs from the other applications in the suite, it will deliver the same benefits of reducing costs and increasing productivity by streamlining and automating the paperless flow of relevant data to facilitate better and faster business decisions. The first challenge is lead generation. While some professional or other online sites are free such as LinkedIn, craigslist etc., other more specialized ones are fee-based. However, recruiting qualified drivers is more complicated than bringing in new office workers. It’s more competitive and it also involves government regulations and licensing not to mention a long list of verified personal, criminal and other background checks etc. The new module’s objective is to help executives arrive at a hiring decision in days if not hours by accelerating the process through digitally recording and then analyzing all the relevant data. For example, being digital the new tool can capture applicants’ electronic signatures on their online application forms. In other words, it is transforming conventional employment matchmaking into speed dating. Says Microdea director of product management Dave Geddes, “Through analytics, the application can also help spot recruitment trends as well as analyze which lead-generation sites are the most productive. The software is also driver specific. In future, we hope to expand it for recruiting other carrier-related positions such as dispatchers.” Finally, what other plans does Microdea have on the books? Says CEO Steve Divitkos, “We are starting to target smaller carriers, those with fewer than 50 employees.” He has seen the future and it works. ss 2016 TRUXPO SHOW GUIDE 25 ss
