If a person finds they had few problems with servicing their vehicle, that service experience will influence the decision on purchasing the same brand or model of vehicle in the future.

Dealerships now see the service operation as a “secondary sales department.”

.D. Power’s recent Automotive Analyst Note, ‘The Seven Year Itch,’ points to how important one’s experience with vehicle service is in making crucial buying decisions. The note penned by J.D. Power analysts Virginia Connell grew out of J.D. Power’s annual customer satisfaction survey looking at Canadians’ experience with vehicle service amongst dealership service operations and independents.

Connell’s note points out by the time a vehicle reaches seven years of age, dealership service operations retain “only half of all their possible on-brand service occasions.” Dealership operations have placed a great deal of focus on improving the experience with their service operations as “dealers have realized that they are not going to be making money on just selling cars, especially with the profit margins where they are at now,” adds J.D. Ney, supervisor of the Canadian automotive practice with J.D. Power in Toronto.

One of the interesting findings that came out of both the customer satisfaction survey and the analyst note is as dealership service operations and independents fight to get and maintain profitable service dollars, the quality of the service provided makes an important impact on vehicle buying decisions in the future. If a person finds they had few problems with servicing their vehicle, that service experience will influence the decision on purchasing the same brand or model of vehicle in the future.

Dealerships now see the service operation as a “secondary sales department,” Connell notes. “A 10 out of 10 dealership service experience generates repurchase intent at the dealership 3.1 times higher than when a service is rated 8 or 9.”

Connell delved into the numbers a bit deeper and discovered that “among owners of 4-7 year old vehicles who have serviced their vehicle only at a dealership facility in the past 12 months, 79 per cent say that they ‘probably will’ or ‘definitely will’ repurchase/lease from the dealership that most recently serviced their current vehicle.”

What does this mean for independents?

It has to be kept top-of-mind that the number of vehicles on the road today over six years old are more than what can be successfully handled by dealership service operations. Many will go to independents for needed service and maintenance work. There is a growing interdependence between dealerships and independents in ensuring that vehicle owners remain satisfied with their vehicle purchase. Many independents have long-standing, profitable relationships with dealership service and parts departments.

Many dealership operations will often send service work to independents they trust.

The goal is to maintain the vehicle owner’s satisfaction with the brand. Vehicle owners who have a poor experience with the maintenance and repair of their vehicle will purchase a different vehicle make in order to avoid the poor service they experienced. Independents need to understand that the service experience they provide will be a deciding factor in a future vehicle purchase. People will come to them for advice and even recommendations for vehicle purchases based on the service experience and will decide whether to bring their new vehicle to them in the future.

Carfax announced that Jon Arnett has joined the company as general manager/managing director, Carfax Canada.

Arnett brings over a decade of automotive experience in Canada to Carfax, including time in the vehicle history industry. Arnett will oversee efforts to continue expanding the scope of information reported to Carfax and the availability of Carfax Reports throughout the provinces.

Dayco Acquires Precision Parts

Dayco Products, LLC continued its expansion activities into the harmonic balancer manufacturing market with the acquisition of Precision Parts Pty. Ltd. The company will now operate under the name Dayco Precision Holdings Pty. Ltd. Precision Parts is an Australianbased manufacturer of harmonic balancers, performance balancers and engine idler pulleys, as well as a supplier of overrunning alternator pulleys for the automotive aftermarket industry, and possesses one of the world’s largest ranges of automotive harmonic balancers.

Sean Lannoo Joins Continental as Sales Technical Training Specialist

CARQUEST 2013 Charity Golf Tournament

CARQUEST Canada Ltd. held its annual Charity Golf Tournament at Springfield Country Club to raise funds for the CARQUEST/WORLDPAC Charitable Foundation.

The Charitable Foundation raises funds that are used for a varity of charities in the communities CARQUEST Canada conducts business. On hand were close to 140 golfers representing customers, employees and suppliers from both Canada and the United States.

“In the seven years we have been running this charitable tournament we have raised close to $150,000,” said Steve Gushie, president of CARQUEST Canada, “and we are very pleased to present a cheque for $15,000 out of this year’s funds in support of the Children’s Breakfast Club.”

Sean Lannoo will be responsible for providing technical support and technical training to customer sales personnel and professional technicians throughout the United States and Canada.

These activities will include presenting and demonstrating the capabilities and advantages of VDO technology and the VDO OE quality replacement parts program.

The announcement was made by Howard Laster, head of aftermarket – NAFTA Continental commercial vehicles & aftermarket, who noted, “We are delighted to have Sean Lannoo back on our technical support team. His contribution to our aftermarket TPMS program was instrumental in getting our program started at the onset of TPMS and helped set our innovative VDO REDI-Sensor Multiapplication Replacement TPMS Sensor on an industry leading course we enjoy today.”

In his training efforts, Sean Lannoo will promote the benefits of VDO products and instruct and educate customers on their proper application and use.

Additionally, Lannoo will be responsible for developing and maintaining the library of installation instructions for VDO replacement parts and assisting VDO sales personnel with trade shows and service clinics. He will also help create sales opportunities with existing and prospective customers.

Sean Lannoo had previously been with Continental from 1997 to 2010, where he played a key technical support role, serving as both an engineering analyst and product manager. In addition to his TPMS work, Lannoo also handled the company’s aftermarket instrumentation, ATE Brakes, invehicle GPS navigation systems and audio systems.

Prior to rejoining Continental, Lannoo worked in the Power Generation industry, serving as the Inside Sales Technical Expert for Davidson Sales Co. in Daytona Beach, FL. Sean Lannoo holds an Associate of Science Degree in Electronics from Hamilton Technical College, and is an ASE Certified Brakes and Parts Specialist. www.ssgm.com

What Crankshaft Position Sensors Do The new crankshaft position sensor measures the speed and position of the crankshaft and transmits this information to the ECU. By monitoring engine RPM and direction, it ensures optimal engine performance. The sensors use the Hall effect, which can more accurately read speeds from zero RPM. Why Crankshaft Position Sensors Fail Exposure to extreme heat can burn or wear out the sensor, or it can become contaminated by oil or other leaking engine fluids. Helping vehicle owners understand what it takes to get ready for the winter months

By Tom Venetis, Editor ne of the challenges of selling winter maintenance is how to position this package in relation to regular maintenance checks and programs. It is certainly not as easy as it once was. Gone are the days when an independent service facility could simply place an advertisement in a local newspaper or put out a sign in front of the bays announcing a winter maintenance package, and the business would come rolling in. Winter maintenance packages often do not look very different from normal maintenance; and once common quarterly maintenance routines are becoming harder to sell today with the growing number of vehicles with extended maintenance intervals.

One way of tackling this problem is offered in the recent J.D. Power survey on customer satisfaction with automotive service at dealerships and aftermarket operations. J.D. Ney, supervisor of the Canadian automotive practice with J.D. Power in Toronto, remarked that vehicle owners are now bundling services together. If someone comes in for a mandated oil and filter change, the vehicle owner often uses that service visit to bundle several other service jobs with 14 SSGM October 2013

the oil and filter work.

Taking that insight one more step, as the fall months approach it is likely a good time to use these service opportunities to bundle a winter service package or a set of maintenance checks for the approaching winter months.

|| Winterization Creating a Customer-Friendly Check List

One thing is certain, most vehicle owners are not ready when winter hits and often don’t know what their vehicles need to be ready. Yes, there are some obvious things, but there are plenty of others that escape their attention.

We will touch upon a couple of them in greater detail a bit later; but let’s first see about helping vehicle owners understand what you can do for them to gret ready for the winter months. This is where a check list can come in handy. Your service writers can have it at the ready and explain to vehicle owners why these things must be looked at. It is a great opportunity to explain the important functions these pieces play in keeping a vehicle running smoothly in winter. Here are a few things that should be on a check-list for winter:

Batteries

When temperatures dip, having a fully charged and operating battery is critical. Too often batteries are neglected by vehicle owners until something goes wrong. In winter, that means getting into the car and finding it does not start. Batteries should be tested regularly, on each service visit. In winter, batteries that lack a full charge or cannot hold a full charge can freeze in very cold temperatures, damaging the plates. Batteries should also be checked to see if they have sufficient cranking and cold start amps.

Many of today’s battery check scan tools come with a handy feature that will print off the results in an easy-tounderstand graphic. Use that printout to show the vehicle owner the state the battery is in and why you are recommending the battery needs to be replaced.

Ignition System

A check should be done to make sure there are no worn or defective wires, the spark plugs are in good working order and the distributor cap is not damaged.

Brakes

Should be serviced and checked for wear.

It is critical that brakes and brake fluid are in good working order during winter months.

Tires

Recommend tires be switched to proper winter tires. need to point out that traditional All-Season tires will perform poorly in winter months. Winter tires are designed specifically for winter and cold temperatures, with sipes and blocks that improve grip on snow, ice and slush. As well, the compounds used in Winter Tires are made to remain flexible in the cold so as to provide the needed traction and handling for driving on snow-covered and ice-covered roads. The compounds used in All-Season tires will become stiff when temperatures dip to near freezing and below, and the tire will behave more like a hockey puck skating across a frozen pond or rink, lacking the needed traction and grip for the safe handling of the vehicle.

Let’s take a look at two other critical parts of a check list: Lighting and Antifreeze.

Lighting

Lighting is something overlooked when it comes to maintenance for most vehicle owners. The only time most think about their headlights are when they fail. It is quite surprising how many vehicles are on the road with dim headlights or with one failed headlight.

Failure of a vehicle’s headlights is unacceptable at any time, most especially in the winter months where “there are less daylight hours, plus there are more hazards on the road like bad weather,” says Bess Collins, marketing manager for Canada with GE Lighting. “Proper automotive lighting will not only allow you to see farther and more of the road ahead of you, but will also allow you to be seen by other drivers.”

What many fail to grasp is automotive headlights are wear items just like brakes, especially today’s modern halogen lights that do have a certain lifespan, says Alfredo de la Vega, vice-president, marketing and product management, NAFTA, Central and South America at Hella Inc. “With the coming winter months, it is crucial to do a full inspection of your lights, not just the headlights, but the rear lights and side lights as well. Service writers should ask drivers if they have noticed any dimming in the lights; or if the vehicle owner comes in regularly for service, to look at the service records to discover when the lights were checked and replaced. “Headlights will dim over time so (while) you may still have ‘working’ headlights, the light they emit may not be as effective as it was when they were purchased new,” Collins adds “A good rule of thumb is when you are winterizing or getting your car ready for a change in season, make sure you consider your headlights and change them. A simple and inexpensive change can make a big difference.”

Extended Drain Intervals Pushing Filter Technology High-quality synthetic oils, new engine designs push the need for using premium filters in service bays

I

t used to be the hard-and-fast rule that every 3,000 miles or nearly 5,000 kilometres, one needed to change the motor oil and filter. While not every driver ever followed that rule, it was something everyone knew about and could even recite, if pressed. Today, that rule is under challenge.

Vehicle makers are now rolling off the line makes and models that have much longer drain intervals, many extending well past the traditional rule.

There are vehicles today that even sell themselves on having to change the oil and filter only once every 10,000 kilometres or every six months.

To meet this challenge the oil makers have also pushed the envelope.

Many of today’s newest synthetic motor oils are blended to have superior heat and oxidation resistance, and are further engineered to have improved viscosity; and additives are introduced to better protect critical engine parts while providing superior cleaning and suspension of harmful contaminants that can damage critical engine components.

These changes now present new challenges for independent service operations. While many drivers are happy to not have to do as many oil and filter changes as before – sometimes reducing the number to only two a year from the traditional four – service bays are less happy to see a once profitable

The 3,000 mile interval is so ingrained, drivers do not believe that they can really go five times that amount before the next oil and filter change.”

It also does not help that coming onto the market today are a growing number of off-shore manufactured oil filters trying to make headway in the North American market by being at a significantly lower price-point than today’s premium filters. Some drivers gravitate towards these cheaper alternatives as a means of saving a few dollars on an oil and filter change.

Hughes continues, “Cutting corners on design and materials is easy to do when the guts of the filter are hidden by a metal can. For quality [filter] manufacturers that supply original equipment car makers, getting this message out is challenging – especially to a motoring public that simply views filtration as a ‘sock in a can.’ ” Because of extended drain intervals and the improved capacity for synthetic motor oils to capture and hold contaminants, filter media in today’s premium oil filters have moved away from the traditional paper-based media to more advanced synthetic-based media.

Synthetic media have many advantages, such as high efficiency with low restriction, and an improved ability to trap and hold more dirt than traditional cellulose/synthetic blends.

Adjusting Clutch Master Cylinders Following a new clutch installation there is nothing worse than experiencing slipping or release problems. Many times installers even begin to believe that the new clutch kit is defective. This is not correct, in most cases! The majority of the time a simple, quick adjustment will alleviate any problems. Most master cylinders are easily adjustable.

When a new clutch kit is installed, the master cylinder needs to be re-adjusted to work properly with this new kit and avoid release and slipping problems.

Following the steps listed below demonstrates the proper way to adjust the master cylinder and avoid potential release problems with the new clutch:

Verify that hydraulic fluid is clean and that correct fluid was used.

2.

Locate the master cylinder push rod that attaches to the clutch pedal.

3.

Using the picture (Fig. 2) as reference, extend the push rod to allow for more throw. After the rod has been extended, tighten the locking nut.

Caution: DO NOT extend the rod out too far. Extending too far out can block the compensating port in the master cylinder.

Preventing Slipping: 1.

Many filter makers now use duallayer synthetic media for added filtration and contaminant capture. For example, Denso’s First Time Fit Oil Filters use two levels of filtration to capture more harmful materials and to prevent the filter from clogging over the extended drain interval, says Mathew Souto, powertrain product management department with Denso Products and Services Americas Inc. “For vehicles where the manufacturer recommends the use of synthetic oil and extended drain intervals, it is appropriate to use a filter that is specially designed for use with synthetic oils to avoid degradation of the filtering function and failure of one or more internal filter parts or valves,” says Kevin O’Dowd, NA director, brand/ product marketing, automotive aftermarket, Mann+Hummel Purolator Filters. “The Purolator Synthetic oil filter is engineered to help motorists take advantage of the extended life offered by synthetic oils. The Opportunity to Solve the Current Automotive Technician Shortage

anada’s current unemployment as of September 2012 is 7.1 per cent. The unemployment rate for youth between the ages of 15 to 24 is 13.6 per cent, almost twice the national average. Stats Canada reports that 20 per cent of university graduates who do have jobs are not working in the field they studied for, which some experts call underemployment. In addition to that, university graduates carry an average of $28,000 in student loan debt. It is time for our industry, our government, our education system, the parents of our youth and our youth themselves to face the realities of the true opportunities that are available for a great career with great pay.

The automotive service sector, both the independents and the new car dealers, are currently experiencing a shortage of 4,984 qualified automotive service technicians Canada-wide. If you include heavy duty, auto body and collision, and parts counter technicians the number climbs to 11,821. (CARS Labour Market Update Study 2013) If that shortage is not addressed, it is projected to double each year for the next four years due to technicians retiring or leaving the industry for other reasons and the growth of the sector.

There could be a shortage of 20,000 automotive technicians by 2017, and an overall shortage of 75,776 of motive power technicians.

Why The Shortage?

Why are we not attracting more young people into this trade? First of all, only 50 per cent of all automotive shops in Canada use apprentices.

(CARS Labour Market Update Study 2013) There are many reasons given for this, including that they are not busy enough or not big enough; but many 22 SSGM October 2013

shops do not want to invest the time and the money, stating that the returns are not there for the investment or that the apprentice leaves after getting his/ her license. There has been a lot of misinformation given to parents and school counselors starting in the 1990s and then into the 2000s.

In the 1990s, young people were all pushed towards computer programming and the Internet. Everyone was going to be a millionaire. After the Internet bubble burst, the next big thing was business school and everyone was encouraged to get their MBA. Trades were seen as a choice of last resort. Parents and society viewed the trades as dirty and below them. Many high schools closed their automotive shop classes and put the money towards other curricula. Of the five high schools in the district I live, four have closed their automotive programs and the fifth has scaled theirs back.

Almost 50 per cent of young people signing up for automotive apprenticeship programs drop out after two years (Canadian Independent Automotive Association). Why is this? Over the years there has been a culture of using apprentices for simple low-paying work and of hazing them. The hazing seems to be diminishing. However, the culture is still perpetuated by some senior staff who state they had it hard in the old days and new employees need to learn how hard things can be.

Many apprentices are relegated to performing oil changes and such basic services all the time, and they lose interest in proceeding because they are not developing their skills. If they do stick things out, many are not qualified when they are finished their four years because they have not had the experience they need to be licensed. This

creates a double-edged sword for other shop owners looking to take on newly licensed technicians and finding that they have to invest a lot of time to help them catch up to the levels that their papers indicate.

Another factor is the fact that vehicle manufacturers are making vehicles that are highly technical, many with extended service intervals. This creates a scenario in dealer service operations where they only need one or two highly skilled technicians and lots of lower skilled service technicians purely to do maintenance and replace parts. Many young people see this as an assembly line mentality and are looking for more exciting opportunities. Once a vehicle is older there are more challenges for technicians and those that work in the aftermarket get to work on a greater mix of makes and models, and a wider variety of maintenance, diagnosis and repairs. In addition, the approach by some provincial apprenticeship programs to create four separate licenses for each year accentuates this problem. By allowing large dealership and franchise chains to hire dozens of lube technicians, a handful of brake and undercar technicians and one or two fully-trained and licensed journey persons, some of the colleges in more remote areas of Canada have had to cancel third and fourth year classes because of a lack of registrations. All of this contributes to young people leaving this apprenticeship and sourcing other careers.

It is a rewarding job and unlike the past, due to the shortages in technicians, the pay rates are getting much better. Independent shop owners and parts store owners need to be involved in any career day presentations that come available. Shops and parts stores need to sponsor the automotive shop classes with tools, equipment and money. Shops and parts stores need to invite students and parents to visit their locations and get involved in young people’s careers choices. For too long we have made it the fault of the government, schools or the apprenticeship board.

We need to get involved, and those that get involved first are going to get the cream of the crop. We also need to market these concerns to the general public. If this problem is not solved soon the rates to service vehicles will begin to go up exponentially as the rates to keep people in this industry escalate. There is talk of bringing in foreign workers, but for this industry, if their English skills are not there, this creates another challenge.

Recruitment takes place on several levels. Shops need to be trained as to the benefit of hiring an apprentice.

The Canadian Apprenticeship Forum reports that employers receive a benefit of $1.47 for every $1 they invest in an apprentice. This cost/benefit analysis needs to be brought to all shop owners so they have a clear understanding of the benefits.

The industry needs Federal and Provincial support on several levels.

There needs to be an equitable and transparent apprenticeship program and administration of that program.

It cannot be left completely up to the private sector. In some cases, those with more money manipulate the program to their advantage. Our industry associations such as the Canadian Independent Automotive Association, the Automotive Industries Association and all of the existing provincial associations need to advocate both to industry and government for support for these programs. Please join these associations and give of your time and knowledge to solve this opportunity.

I know that our governments are committed to creating employment; both the Federal and Ontario governments both committed 71 million dollars each toward the refurbishing of Ford’s Oakville plant. They say that would create 2,800 permanent jobs. In my opinion we could get 5,000 jobs in the automotive sector with much less money.

In most jurisdictions, apprentices go to school for six weeks every year. During that time they are away from work and only receive EI benefits. There should be a combination employer and government subsidy so that the apprentice has full wages during this time. I think that would help us retain many more apprentices in our industry.

There are programs already available and there was some federal money available through Canada’s Economic Action Plan. But many shops, accountants and others that could help with this are unaware of what is available.

The industry needs to actively recruit female candidates for apprenticeship. In addition, the male-centric culture needs to evolve to become more egalitarian. The other challenge facing us is the lingering perception that only those who are unable to follow an academic path in high school and univer-

sity are left over for the trades, whether male or female. The education system needs to work with different learning styles and recognize different types of intelligence. The automotive service sector is full of highly intelligent hard working individuals, they need to be given the respect that other professions already have. The fact of the matter is that 20 per cent or more of university graduates are under employed, but in the trades, anyone who wants to work can get a job.

In conclusion, once we attract and hire an apprentice we need to work hard at retaining them. When an apprentice is hired, the shop needs to have a complete training schedule laid out so that the apprentice and the shop are held accountable for her/his progress. When an apprentice sees hope that they will have a license in four years and the pay to go with it they will stay. Have a pay structure laid out so that as they progress through training they get the raises they deserve. And though there is currently a tool subsidy program available to apprentices, it is too little for the amount of tools that they need to purchase. That needs to be increased. My Scan Tool Won’t Communicate

System description:

The ABS/EDL system uses an Electronic Differential Lock (EDL) which is a low speed, traction assist system that acts automatically without the driver’s intervention. EDL uses many of the ABS components to adjust drive wheel speed for improved traction, steering control and stability. EDL operates during acceleration up to speeds of 25 mph (40 km/h) on frontwheel drive cars. On vehicles equipped with 4Motion, EDL operates up to speeds of 50 mph (80 km/h).

EDL supplements the standard ABS functions on: • Bosch 5.0 ABS • Bosch 5.3 ABS • Bosch 5.7 ABS • Teves MK 04 • ITT MK 20 IE ABS

module recognizes a calculated brake temperature within a specified range.

If a fault occurs in the ABS, both the ABS and EDL will be disabled and the ABS warning light will illuminate. The ABS/EDL system receives a ‘Standing Time’ signal (also known as a Time Interval Management signal) generated in the instrument cluster each time the ignition switch is turned to the ‘on’ position. This time signal is used to calculate brake temperature based on the number and interval of applied EDL events. ABS code 01203 indicates a problem with this time signal.

What symptoms might I expect to encounter?

1. ABS light and brake light are both illuminated; brake light may flash.

2. Trouble code 01203 stored in ABS system.

3. No scan tool communication possible with ABS. 4. No scan tool communication possible with other vehicle systems at all.

5. Abnormal instrument cluster operation/display.

Approach to diagnosis:

The ABS controller can fail in such a way internally that it will backfeed voltage into the instrument cluster via the ‘standing time’ signal wire. When both the ABS and brake lights are illuminated and/or flashing, always start with a diagnosis of the ABS controller. If the voltage backfeed from the ABS controller is large enough, it can adversely affect CAN communication between all modules on the CAN bus and can cause the instrument cluster displays to operate incorrectly.

How should I proceed with diagnosis?

1. Using a full function factory compatible scan tool, check and verify that communication is possible with the ABS system. Use Address Word 03 to access the ABS. 2. If scan tool communication is possible with the ABS system, check for the presence of code 01203 in system memory.

3. If scan tool communication is not possible with the ABS system, check and verify that scan tool communication is possible with any other vehicle system (engine, transmission, SRS, etc.).

4. If communication is possible with other systems, check for correct switched ignition power to the ABS controller pin #15 (black/blue wire). There must be 12 volts with the ignition on.

5. Check ABS controller pins #17 and #18 (both red/black wires) for 12 volts at all times.

6. Check ABS controller pins #16 and #19 (both brown wires) for good ground at all times.

7. If tests 1 through 6 all pass, proceed as follows: Using a lab scope, check for the presence of a ‘Standing Time’ signal from the instrument cluster to the ABS controller pin #10 (green wire). This signal will appear as a series of quick 11-volt to zero volt square-wave pulses a moment or so after ignition is turned to the ‘on’ position.

The signal typically lasts only a few seconds. The signal must be a clean square-wave form and cycle all the way to zero volts. If the signal does

not reach zero volts on the down slope, it is not correct.

8. If no signal or an incorrect signal is present, turn the ignition switch off. Disconnect the ABS ECU. Turn the ignition on and recheck for a signal at pin #10 on the wiring harness side.

9. If a correct 11-volt square-wave signal is now present, likely there is an internal driver problem with the ABS ECU. 10. If there is still no signal, check the wiring from the ABS ECU to the instrument panel. Pay special attention to the orange connector at the driver’s side kick panel connector station for corrosion or damage. If the wiring is okay, there is a likely failure of the instrument cluster itself and additional diagnosis of the cluster will be necessary.

Technical tips:

1. The Standing Time signal originates in the instrument cluster and is sent out to those controllers that need it (examples: ABS controller, climate control controller).

2. If a scan tool can not communicate with any controller on the CAN bus, unplug the ABS controller and recheck for communication on all other systems.

3. The ABS controller is available as a separate unit. Replacement of the entire ABS hydraulic assembly is not required.

4. The ABS controller can be accessed and replaced through the driver’s side wheel well in many cases without removing the hydraulic assembly from the vehicle. The inner fender wall will need to be removed to gain access.

Antifreeze/Coolant

This used to be one of the more simple things. Remember when your dad or older brother or sister would simply get a bottle of green-coloured antifreeze and top off the radiator or just do a 50-50 mix of water and antifreeze when the cold weather started? Well, that has changed. A quick glance today will reveal a range of antifreeze products formulated for specific vehicle models. So a technician’s job is a bit more complicated than years before.

Still, makers of antifreeze products agree there are some common rules that technicians and service writers can apply and relate to vehicle owners.

“In regards to the cooling system, it exists to transfer heat from the engine and about one-third of the heat is exhausted through the cooling system,” says David Turcotte, technical director for the Zerex brand with Ashland Inc. “So if the system does not work properly, you will get a lot of issues resulting from that, one being engine damage.”

that the system has enough coolant, then make sure the system is properly pressurized and all the hoses and connectors are in good working order. It is amazing how many times problems come from small leaks or pressure drops that many drivers overlook. Even a visual inspection can point to problems. If the coolant looks cloudy, black or brown or gives off a burnt or ammonialike smell, then it has to be changed.

What is crucial to tell drivers is even if a vehicle manufacturer has an extended drain interval on a antifreeze/ coolant, in winter it is very important that the system be checked specifically to make sure the system has the right mixture of antifreeze and water. If the mixture is incorrect, one may find the system not able to operate properly in very cold temperatures.

“When checking your antifreeze/coolant, the proper concentration of a cooling system is a 50/50 mix of antifreeze/coolant and water [unless additional antifreeze/ coolant or additional water is added, the concentration should still remain at a 50/50 mix],” says Tom Cholke, senior technical services manager at Old World Industries Inc., makers of the Peak line of antifreeze and coolants.

“If you have [the mixture] correctly diluted, 50/50, the freeze-point will be about minus 34°F,” adds Turcotte. “If you come from colder climates, it should be somewhere around 50/70 and it should be good for up to minus 84°F.” What is most important is that technicians and service writers emphasize if the coolant system has to be flushed or the mixture changed to prepare for the winter months, the antifreeze used must be one recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. Today’s engines are built to much higher tolerances than before and the cooling systems require specific additives and corrosion inhibitors

That is why you see all of today’s major coolant/antifreeze makers offering a range of products specific to domestic and foreign nameplate vehicles, with formulations matching the factory fill specifications recommended by the vehicle makers for the vehicles. Mixing the wrong antifreeze or coolant, or using an old-style ‘green’ coolant, will damage the cooling system over time.

“Mixing coolants can result in over-concentration leading to gelling of the coolant and other problems,” adds Buckley. “Using the old-style ‘green’ or silicate coolants in modern vehicles designed for OAT or HOAT coolants often results in leaking water pumps due to incompatibility of modern water pump seals with silicates. That is by far the most common mistake technicians make when changing coolants.”

TO HELP AVOID THE DANGERS OF WINTER DRIVING AS OUTLINED BY THE INSURANCE BUREAU OF CANADA AND CARCARECANADA.CA:

1. Be alert, well-rested and sober behind the wheel. Avoid driver distractions.

2. Tune-up your car by getting a complete checkup in the fall. Your tune-up should include battery, belts, hoses, radiator, coolant/antifreeze, oil, lights, brakes, exhaust system, heater/defroster, wipers, ignition system and tires.

3. Check the tires and tire pressure at least once a month when the tires are cold.

4. Ensure that your windshield is free of dings and cracks. Cold temperatures can turn a small ding in your windshield into a major crack.

5. Keep the gas tank at least half full, decreasing the chances of moisture forming in the gas lines and possibly freezing.

6. Ensure that lights work. The end of Daylight Savings Time in the fall results in earlier nightfall and more nighttime driving.

7. Keep a Winter Survival Kit in the trunk of your vehicle.

8. Heed the warnings from local weather offices of Environment Canada of impending blizzards, heavy snow, freezing rain or drizzle, deep freeze and winds, and black ice.

9. Check road conditions before travel. On the road, if you must drive in bad weather, clean snow off your vehicle, exercise caution, plan ahead and make sure you have enough fuel. Drop your speed to match road conditions.

10. Always keep a road map, flashlight, first-aid kit and blanket in your vehicle.

The Truth About Electrical Issues I

n my experience, it’s possible to develop a love-hate relationship with almost any automotive system. Engines, transmissions, chassis and body — there are lots of ways to enjoy or detest any given job, with one exception: electrical. In my book, electrical system work is a hate-hate scenario. Issues can be intermittent, illogical and damn difficult to trace. The growing use of software to control simple systems like window lifts and door locks is a major factor, as is a serious lack of manufacturer understanding of how their products perform over 10-15 years of real-world use. We all see vehicles driving with dead locks, windows, driver information systems and others because owners can’t or won’t spend the big bucks necessary to troubleshoot these systems. What can we do?

There are ways to push back against the frustration of tough electrical issues.

The first is to accept that computers are rarely the cause of electrical issues. They can be fried or damaged, but more often than not it’s because of the failure of a simple part like a sensor or actuator. Connectors are often overlooked when tracking down electrical system bugs. Technologies like GM’s “weather pack” gasketed connector have almost eliminated moisture-induced corrosion issues.

But there’s another issue: heat. Modern electrical systems use marginal wire gauges mainly because the switch gear is expected to carry control currents only, with computers driving relays to handle big power systems like sunroof motors or wipers. It’s surprising then, that overheating is still a major problem. Melted connectors and insulation, as well as heat-distorted switch contacts are still very common, but can be missed when we dive straight for the computer with every trouble code.

Around my office, my F-150 is legendary as the oldest beater in the parking lot and recently the wipers quit. The cause was a failure of the GEM module, which is inconveniently attached to the back of the fuse block. Why did it quit? It turns out there is a minor windshield leak that ran water behind the dash and over the unit. I can replace the module, but I had better address the leak if I want to avoid doing the knuckle-skinning job again. On a customer car, this kind of advice is essential...fix the problem but also the root cause, even if it seems far removed from the problem.

Tool Test Milwaukee M12 Fuel 3/8" cordless impact wrench and M12 ¼"

ordless tools have a chequered history in automotive repair.

Nickel cadmium batteries were a major reason, with their low power density and memory effect resulting in tools best left for occasional DIY use.

Lithium ion batteries however, have addressed those battery shortcomings; a strong battery, however, isn’t enough for professional use. Pros require a difficult to achieve combination of power, durability, light weight and long battery life. Milwaukee Electric, well known in the building trades, has launched two series of 12V and 18V lithium-ion powered cordless tools that just might change the air-driven paradigm that’s dominated auto service for the last 60 years. SSGM tested Milwaukee’s M12 Fuel impact wrench and M12 ratchet kits in typical automotive service conditions driving a variety of ¼-inch and 3/8 -inch deep and shallow sockets.

3/8-inch drive impact wrench

The impact wrench kit ships in a blow molded case with the impact gun, two 12V lithium-ion batteries, and Milwaukee’s base station type battery charger. The 3/8 -inch drive unit uses friction ring socket retention and weighs a mere 2.3 pounds with a motor and head assembly barely bigger than the unit’s pistol grip. There is no mistaking this tool, however for a hobbyist’s toy.

The anvil type tool uses a light alloy head and rubber bumper just like the pneumatic tools you are familiar with, and is driven by a brushless motor. It delivers up to 3,500 impacts per minute but more importantly features a two range drive control delivering selectable torque at either 17 foot-pounds or 117 foot-pounds. We found this ideal for nut setting small fasteners, then driving home chassis and under hood bolts by simply pressing the mode switch on top

of the housing.

Reversing the drive is by a switch that’s thumb activated without removing your hand from the pistol grip and there’s a useful LED lamp that illuminates with a half press of the trigger and stays on for several seconds while you line up the socket. The kit ships with two batteries, but in two hours of continuous use on a variety of automotive fasteners we had yet to resort to the backup. The charger is mercifully simple. There are no switches or complex controls: plug in the battery and wait for the LED to light green indicating a full charge. There is a fuel gauge built into the tool, but with the lithium-ion pack and two batteries, we found it simpler to just run the tool to depletion then snap in a new battery.

Overall, the 2454-20 impact wrench is deceptively light and unlike pneumatic tools is neutrally balanced, rather than the nose heavy bias of pneumatic tools. The light weight, combined with neutral balance makes it unlikely that a technician will experience fatigue using this tool.

Also part of the M12 system, SSGM tested the 2456–21 cordless ¼-inch ratchet kit. This kit ships in a zippered nylon case with a similar standalone charger to the 3/8 -cordless impact wrench. It uses the same M-12 batteries as the impact tool, and also shares its LED fuel gauge and worklight.

Milwaukee has clearly thought about quarter inch ratchet users, as the tool is slim and stick-like with a lever style grip trigger and a ratchet head with the same size, shape and configuration as a conventional quarter inch hand ratchet. No-load speed is 250 RPM and the small tool delivers up to 30 foot-pounds of torque, more than enough for typical quarter-inch drive sockets, but with sufficient feel that you’re unlikely to break fasteners. Like the impact wrench, the tool is neutrally balanced and in this application allows use at arm’s reach and at odd angles; in underdash work with long extensions it was easy to line up sockets and hold the variable speed tool in blind screw setting. It’s possible to lock out the trigger, but we found this feature unnecessary in both interior and under hood use.

Like the M12 impact wrench, the tool carries a five-year unit warranty and a

two-year battery warranty.

Can these Milwaukee tools work in auto repair environments? The short answer is “Yes,” with the 2456-21 ¼-inch ratchet speeding fussy, multiple fastener jobs such as engine covers, interior trim fasteners and under dash work. Compared to a hand ratchet, it’s notably faster and with its linear design, is far easier to control than a cordless screwdriver. It’s a handy tool, but the 2454–22 3/8 -inch impact wrench is a surprise. Despite its small size and slimline battery, the tool is usable anywhere and could replace a 3/8 -inch air impact gun in most jobs. It also works at –18°C, which combined with no cord or airline, makes it possible to do quick outside work where necessary.

Nobody likes to fight a battery hold down outdoors in a Canadian winter, but this tool not only works in the cold, but can be triggered and reversed with gloved hands. With both these M12 system tools, the battery packs are quick charging and almost impossibly small given their deliverable power.

Ken-Tool announces the new 36010 5-bar SUPER MAGNUM tire cage Ken-Tool announced the expansion of its line of tire restraining devices with the introduction of the 36010 5-bar SUPER MAGNUM cage. Testing has shown the SUPER MAGNUM cage reduces the side-force energy resulting from a catastrophic sidewall zipper rupture of a Super Wide-Base tire by 93 per cent.

The impressive reduction of side-force energy is achieved with expanded steel mesh deflection barriers welded to the insides of the cage tubing. The cage features five mandrel-bent, high-strength 12 gauge, 2-1/4” (5.7 cm) diameter structural steel tubes, welded to a 3/16” (0.48 cm) thick steel plate base with a 2.0” (5.08 cm) wide, 1/4” (0.635 cm) thick reinforcing strap welded to the tubes.

The Magnum cages are 48” long, 30” wide and 56-1/4” tall (122 cm. x 76 cm x 143 cm). They are designed to provide more inside clearance for the new generation of Super Single and Super Wide-Base truck tires, with their higher inflation pressures and air volumes. Both cages are rated to 130 psi, and meet the O.S.H.A. Standard No. 29 CFR Part 1910.177 regulations.

Rislone Water Remover Dryer The Rislone Water Remover Fuel Dryer (P/N 34735) eliminates water from the fuel system to prevent rust and corrosion.

As temperatures turn colder, it can also keep customers from being stranded with frozen fuel lines. Since water is heavier than gasoline, it naturally pools at the bottom of the fuel tank. Rislone Water Remover Fuel Dryer is designed to sink into the water, absorbing it so it can be burned off in the engine. The additive works with all fuels, including gasoline, diesel, E10, E15 and E85. It is compatible with two-cycle and four-cycle engines, so users of seasonal equipment like lawn mowers and snow blowers can safely start their machines even after months of disuse. Dryer is safe to use in fuel-injected, turbo, direct-injected and carbureted engines.

One 177 mL bottle treats up to 76 litres of fuel. Since it is packaged in Rislone’s EZ Nozzle bottle, Water Remover Fuel Dryer is the only water-removing additive that can be installed directly into capless or obstructed fuel systems without the need for ancillary equipment. When inserted into a capless fuel tank, the Rislone EZ Nozzle opens the fuel system safety door and allows the additive to flow in smoothly. Once the installation is complete, the entire bottle can be thrown away or recycled for easy cleanup.
