The Buffalo, N.Y. sports world has undergone big changes behind-thescenes, with both the NFL’s Buffalo Bills and NHL’s Buffalo Sabres teams now owned by the same parent company – Pegula Sports and Entertainment (PSE). The Bills and Sabres now have their own production team of videographers and producers for live coverage of both home and away games – forming One Buffalo. With a slogan of One Team; One Goal; One Community; One Family; One Buffalo, the new ownership strives to develop a deeper connection between Buffalo sports teams, fans and the community. The Buffalo-area football and hockey producer just launched a new relationship with New York’s MSG Networks to create MSG WNY (Western New York). PSE also produces website content for Sabres and Bills coverage. Some of the technology once used for only Buffalo NFL content was

brought forward for use at PSE – including TVU Networks’ video transmission technology. The Bills’ TVU One cellular 4G/LTE portable IP video mobile transmitter and TVU receiver have been part of the production package for Buffalo Bills’ programming for the past few seasons. TVU One is used by sports organizations to expand and enhance team coverage for fans using live video content. The football team was also the first to invest in a fully-integrated live transmission solution of DJI’s Inspire 1 drone with a TVU One transmitter, which they purchased last year. Both the TVU One transmitter and Inspire 1 drone are easily portable and can be deployed quickly. The Buffalo Sabres recently purchased a second TVU One for use during this hockey season, so both Sabres and December 2016

Bills Coverage is benefiting from the TVU treatment. “Our TVU Networks equipment has performed very well for the Bills, so we decided to purchase a second TVU One to go on the road with our Sabres production team,” said Stephen Asposto, Sr. Director of Broadcast Operations, PSE/Bills. “The production crew can quickly and easily shoot video with its one-button operation, then send footage, stand ups and highlights from away games back to our studio facilities, and we incorporate the content into our final productions.” One Buffalo’s studio facilities are at New Era Field, the Bills’ newly named home stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y., with connectivity to the Sabres Key Bank Center hockey arena in downtown Buffalo. All programming originates at the New Era Field One Buffalo Studio. The TVU One mobile transmitter sends live video of highlight footage and pre- and post-game coverage, including press conferences, from the field back to the studio in Orchard Park. The physical studio space green screen area is 28 x 32 ft. plus a control room area (it’s actually the old Bills merchandise store, repurposed for the video production team back in 2014) located in the AdPro Bills Sports Training Center. The facility uses VR/AR studio equipment from Ross Video in its production studio, outfitted with three Ikegami HDL-45 cameras with prompters, graphics, servers, etc. The studio ties into the main

production control room in the stadium where all of that equipment can be remotely operated as needed. With TVU remote, a variety of Panasonic P2 cameras are used in the field, as well. A full-time staff of four currently handles production for the daily simulcast shows and they can produce the post-game shows as well, using existing scoreboard operators remotely, from the stadium. Production staff includes a TD, Graphics Operator, Producer and Audio Operator, which equates to a small staff outputting a lot of content. As part of its new venture with MSG Networks, PSE has taken on new daily radio/TV simulcast broadcast responsibilities for MSG WNY, including producing the Buffalo Sabres hockey show The Instigators and the Buffalo Bills football show The John Murphy Show – which launched in the beginning of October to add to the regional MSG programming. The One Buffalo Bills studio production team also produces a weekly NFL pre-game show Bills All Access and a post-game show called Bills Tonight. “Our team has a lot of content to produce, and our TVU Networks gear has made our jobs easier and much more efficient,” Asposto added. In addition, the picture quality of the video has been outstanding. We’re happy to put our TVU One equipment to good use throughout both the NFL and NHL seasons for away game coverage and remote segments to give our audiences the best in-depth coverage possible.” ■

The Hamilton Tigers-Cats All Access program gives fans a reason – prizes, connections, content – to engage with the team beyond the game itself.
Hamilton Tiger-Cats Set the Stadium Standard in Digital Fan Engagement When you think of digital innovation in sport, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats may not be the first organization that comes to mind. But the pride of Canada’s Steel City has quietly become the envy of many sport organizations around the world with its state-of-art digital infrastructure that has revolutionized how fans are engaging with the team. While there was much-to-do about the team’s move to Tim Hortons Field in 2014, over the past 18 months the Tiger-Cats have also completely transformed the fan experience. Digital touch-points have been refreshed and re-energized by an in-stadium Wi-Fi network; a new mobile responsive website (the TiCats are the first CFL team to have one); TiCats TV live video streaming on Ticats.ca, as well as a new mobile ticketing and in-seat ordering program. “Technology now defines how we consume sports – both in and out of the stadium,” said Scott Mitchell, CEO of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. “Tim SPORTScaster

Hortons Field was obviously a huge undertaking, but one of our priorities for our new home was to create an environment that allowed us to engage with today’s tech-savvy sport fan in a dynamic and meaningful way across all platforms.” The Tiger-Cats digital transformation started from the top down. Bob Young, the team’s owner and chairman, is a highly-respected technology entrepreneur who made his mark in the digital world by co-founding Red Hat and Lulu.com. Young and Mitchell, a former athlete and sports executive, took it upon themselves to make their ambitious fan engagement vision a reality. They solicited the expertise of Canadian digital sports leader Mark Silver to deliver on the digital integration strategy. Silver is a former Bell Media executive whose been behind a number of Canada’s top digital sports media landmarks, including the redesign of TSN’s digital properties and leading the Bell/Rogers Media consortium’s award-winning online coverage of the 2010 and

2012 Olympic Games. “What the TiCats have done is one of the most ambitious digital projects embarked on by a Canadian sports organization. Bob and Scott had a vision and committed the resources and energy to make it happen,” said Silver, who was named president of the newly founded company charged with executing on the plan: Stadium Digital. Silver and his team spearheaded the revamping of the team’s digital platforms, first creating a dynamic new content hub for Ticats.ca that streamlines the fan experience across all devices. Stadium Digital also worked with the team to enhance its content strategy, investing in video production and closely monitoring what original and branded content and social activity registers with fans. While there is a dedicated in-house unit that oversees production, Mitchell attests that everyone working on the brand is expected to contribute to telling and sharing the Tiger-Cats story. The other focal point became Ticats All Access – the team’s highly-regarded fan loyalty program. Ticats All Access is the primary destination for fans to consume all things Tiger-Cats. The main premise of All Access is that fans are rewarded for their participation and purchases. Whether it’s enter-

The All Access fan loyalty program plays out big time on the in-stadium scoreboard (2015)

trips, visits with players and alumni, or signed jerseys and helmets. The big touchdown for the Tiger-Cats with the program is the highly valuable behavioural data generated through All Access. The data is being used to support ticket and concession sales, merchandise offers, and partner initiatives. “It is a reciprocal relationship. The more data we’re able to provide on fan behavior the better the experience the team can deliver to fans. All of this ultimately translates into additional revenue for the team,” said Silver. The All Access platform has shown immediate wins for the Tiger-Cats. Silver points to a pre-season “Friends and Family” ticket giveaway that lead to 62 per cent of incremental ticket revenue and there’s significant spikes in concession and merchandise purchases with the introduction of the season seat holder card in 2016. This season the Tiger-Cats also became the first team in the CFL to offer mobile ordering and in-seat delivery to fans through a partnership with Compass Digital Labs. “Concessions are a huge part of being a football fan. The convenience of ordering a beer, popcorn or hot dogs – from your phone directly to your seat – has taken the game day experience to a whole new level,” Silver described. With the success of the All Access platform in Hamilton, Stadium Digital is now in full expansion mode and is bringing the technology to other leagues and teams including the Canadian Hockey League and Toronto Marlies. The company has also been working with the Tiger-Cats main rival the Toronto Argonauts. Silver laughs saying the teams can try to destroy each other on field, but he is more than happy to help the Argos monetize their fan engagement strategy. He agrees it’s harder to get fan’s attention in the busy Toronto sports market compared with Hamilton, but he’s very optimistic that Stadium Digital can help teams set a new standard in fan engagement and excitement. ■

TwitchCon Gamer Conference Covered with NewTek IP More than nine million users check in to Twitch to get their daily online fix of gaming, eSports and social media interaction. But once a year, some of the Twitch community checks in to its annual convention (TwitchCon 2016 was staged at the Kappa Theater in NYC) while the rest catches a video stream from the event. The high-end expectation for production values and streaming content from the conference this year led the production team to use the new NewTek IP Series VMC 1 vision mixer to deliver on-stage projected video while also sending out a video streaming feed. Using NewTek’s IP Series modular video production system, Twitch’s production crew combined video sources from HD-SDI cameras, gaming machines and gaming consoles – between 36 to 40 sources in total, including five SDI cameras in the
Theater, four SDI sources from game systems, and the rest all as NDI sources from networked game systems and computers. “This is our first major event working with NewTek IP Series, and it’s incredible not to worry about how many inputs we have on our switcher,” said Adam Contini, Video Production Manager, Twitch. “Twitch is constantly growing, and this is only the beginning… now we’re only limited by our imagination.” ■

EVS Epsio 4K Zooming Technology a Winner Zooming in on big plays and key moments is all the rage in great sports TV these days, and it’s made possible thanks to the added resolution and capabilities of 4K video production equipment. We’ve all seen the technique – the image on screen is a “zoomed in” or “enlarged” area of the overall camera picture: a tiny gap under a goalie’s stick is seen with incredible detail as the puck slides through; a receiver’s outstretched hand is crystal clear as he snares a tossed football at the goal-line; the split-second between when a baserunner’s foot touches the bag and when the first baseman gets his toe on the base is replayed with a revealing close-up. The 4K cut-out technique is clearly a winner, especially with word that one of the leading manufacturers of live video technology for broadcast and digital media production has scored an Emmy for its zooming platform. EVS will receive its Emmy Award for Technology and Engineering from The National Academy of Television Arts and Sci-

FOX Sports used the sports tech solution for its first-time 4K coverage of several key holes of the U.S. Open golf championship. New Video Assist Features for HD, 4K Models A major new update for Blackmagic’s combination video monitor and recorder Video Assist means users can load up to six 3D lookup tables when monitoring video on-set with either the 5” or 7” 4K model. 3D LUTs have become an important part of digital filmmaking by transforming camera images into a look that closely approximates the final look the director wants. Monitoring with 3D LUTs means the crew can see the footage as the director intends it, and it’s completely non-destructive because the original camera shots remain untouched. The six 3D LUTs can be stored and recalled at any time on both models. Other new features include DNxHD and DNxHR file recording in the MXF format for added compatibility with Avid systems running on Windows. Recording format choices also include DNxHD 220, 145 and 45 bit rates, or DNxHR HQ, SQ and LB formats. The Video Assist 2.3 update also adds false colour monitoring, expanded focus options and new screen rotation features to the 5” Blackmagic Video Assist
model. False colour exposure tools can make it easier to properly set exposure in different parts of the image by highlighting specific colour ranges of luminance with a solid colour overlay. ■

Along with text-based content, publishers can also develop thousands of videos each month for desktop, mobile, social media, and OTT delivery. Reuters, the international multimedia news provider, has announced a production partnership with Israeli-based tech company Wibbitz to create video content using automation technology. It will serve up content as soon as relevant Reuters pictures, text and graphics are aggregated. Ali’s ‘Triple Crown’ Win
The Final Victory documents how Muhammad Ali regained the world heavyweight boxing title for an unprecedented third time. Image © 2016 Paul Leo Faso.
Archival and previously unpublished photographs of an iconic sports event have been artistically re-rendered, digitized and computer-enhanced, and now published in a new collectors’ edition book. The Final Victory – A Tribute to Muhammad Ali’s Third Heavyweight Championship Belt contains over 170 photo/art/graphics of the last and most important victory of Ali’s legendary boxing career, the one that secured his title as “The Greatest of All Time”. The imagery document the moments before, during and after the fight and include the combatants, Ali and Leon Spinks, along with ABC Sports announcers Howard Cosell, Frank Gifford and Chris Shenkel. Also featured in the tribute to Ali are images of former heavyweight champion Smokin’ Joe Frazier, life-long trainer Angelo Dundee, ringman Bundini Brown, actor Sylvester ‘Rocky’ Stallone and actress Edy Williams: images of her infamous topless performance in the ring just prior the fight appear in the new book. When first published as an e-book in 2013 on Amazon, there were less than 100 images and fewer quotes. Following Ali’s passing this past summer, the book was greatly enhanced and published in a coffee table edition with dozens of extra images and many more quotes. ■
Insightful Lessons in Losing Great accomplishments. Best wins ever. Sports are filled with pivotal moments we usually recall from the winner’s perspective. So often lost are insightful stories from the other side: crushing memories of the cornerback who missed the tackle; the relief pitcher who blew the series; the Olympian who fell on the ice. In Losing Isn’t Everything: Lessons Behind the Toughest Losses in Sports History, TV sportscaster Curt Menefee and sportswriter Michael Arkush examine a range of signature sporting "disappointments". Disappointment’s putting it mildly: all sports have their sacrificial scapegoats, and losers are often vilified. But Menefee argues the moments when athletes fall short are just as valuable as those times when they stand tall, offering up deep insights into sports and humanity. Telling the losing stories (and showing them: 16 pages of colour photos illustrate the book) behind such famous moments as the Patriots’ Rodney Harrison guarding the Giants' David Tyree during the "Helmet Catch" in Super Bowl XLII, Mary Decker’s fall in the 1984 Olympic 1500, and Craig Ehlo who SPORTScaster

They just might find redemption: the book also revisits both the Baltimore Colts' loss to the Jets in Super Bowl III, as well as the Red Sox loss in the 1986 World Series, showing why, despite years of humiliation, it might not be all Bill Buckner's fault.
