The Kids Are Alright H

The processes used to match people to jobs are broken. Owners and managers too often reduce the hiring process to one of filling a job with a warm body. Rarely do owners and managers carefully match the job’s requirements with the skill sets of the potential applicant.

ow many times have you heard this: “Today’s young people are lazy and entitled . . . They expect everything to be handed to them without having to work for it . . . they cop an attitude with their elders . . . and they spend all of their time on their phones or tablets!” Complaints about the attitudes of the young have a long pedigree. “I see no hope for the future of our people if they are dependent on frivolous youth of today, for certainly all youth are reckless beyond words...When I was young, we were taught to be discreet and respectful of elders, but the present youth are exceedingly [disrespectful] and impatient of restraint.”

These are Hesiod’s words from the 8th Century BC, and you can slip them into any opinion piece or article about today’s so-called entitled generation.

It’s easy to complain about today’s generation and the difficulties of hiring a qualified young technician; it’s harder to realize that the problem comes down to how we hire and manage today’s employees. Murray Voth’s newest TACT column tackles that issue head-on and deserves careful reading.

Rui Martins, executive vice-president of the Automotive Aftermarket E-Learning Centre, touched upon a similar theme during his remarks at the recent AIA Service Providers Forum. He pointed out that the processes used to match people to jobs are broken. Owners and managers too often reduce the hiring process to one of filling a job with a warm body. Rarely do owners and managers carefully match the job’s requirements with the skill sets of the potential applicant. When hired, employers will often never challenge the new employee, give them meaningful work or will make them do menial tasks for months or even years. The argument is that the new employee has to “pay their dues” or the new employee is given the mantra, “I spent my first years sweeping the floor before I was ever allowed to look at a car. Suck it up.”

Is it any wonder that many highly qualified employees leave? Martins put it best: Today’s young professionals do not want to perform menial tasks which they perceive to be inferior to their qualifications. They have little tolerance for employers who will not use their skill sets and refuse to offer a challenging work environment which will reward them for their efforts in growing the business.

They don’t want to be placeholders, filling a job that leads nowhere; or to be treated poorly and told it is “paying their dues.” Look at the backlash against unpaid internships. The trend in the last twenty years has been to use unpaid interns as a pool for free labour. Interns have dangled before them the carrot of a possible job. The reality is there is no carrot. I know of several highly qualified and skilled persons who have gone through up to half a dozen or more non-paying internships resulting only in continuing unemployment. In the end, all decided to leave their chosen professions, fed up with how they have been treated.

We should not be making the same mistakes with our qualified young technicians.

|| News Briefs Autologic Diagnostics Partners With WORLDPAC Training Institute For 2014 National Conference, Tech Sessions

Autologic Diagnostics, in partnership with the WORLDPAC Training Institute (WTI), hosted their fifth annual National Conference and Tech Sessions (NCTS) at The M Resort in Las Vegas March 6-8, 2014. A total of 260 people from across the US and around the globe were in attendance.

The NCTS kicked off Thursday, March 6th with an opening evening reception at Lux on the top floor of the M Resort, followed by two days of intensive training and a closing dinner on Saturday, March 8th.

Autologic training included BMW, Mini, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Land Rover, Volvo and Volkswagen/Audi car lines. WORLDPAC Training Institute (WTI) provided advanced technical classes on BMW, Mini, Volvo, Mercedes and shop management.

New in 2014, the NCTS introduced three “hands-on” demonstration classes including Mercedes Engine 272 Repair with Jeff Henschel, 722.9 Transmission with Nathan Canson and BMW Panorama Roof with Luke Murray.

The magazine Auto Zeitung was the first. It asked its 620,000 readers to rate their personal top brands. In lubricants category, Liqui Moly took first place for the fourth year in a row. It was

Continental Celebrates Plant Expansion for Electric Parking Brake Production International automotive supplier Continental celebrated the 8,200 square meter expansion of its manufacturing facility located in Fletcher, North Carolina, USA. The US$35 million investment added production and warehouse space, new manufacturing infrastructure as well as new equipment for machining and assembly, and will create approximately 40 new jobs in the state. The goal is to increase the production capacity and the production of Electric Parking Brakes (EPB) locally.

“I am very delighted about the plant expansion. The driving force behind this is the worldwide increasing demand in Electric Parking Brakes. The investment also demonstrates our commitment to exploring the US market for sustainable growth in the future and to be present for our customers locally,”said Matthias Matic, head of the Hydraulic Brake Systems business unit of Continental’s Chassis & Safety Division.

Electric Parking Brakes are gaining significant ground against traditional braking systems and will be fitted to an increasing range of vehicle models and classes within the next few years. The advantage of Electric Parking Brakes is that they perform various assistance functions in conjunction with electronic brake systems to add safety and convenience. Moreover, they operate at the press of a button. Vehicle manufacturers also enjoy greater flexibility in designing interiors because there is no more hand-brake lever to protrude into the passenger compartment.

“Thanks to the growing demand for brake calipers and the overall economic turnaround in North America, we have nearly tripled our regional production at the Fletcher facility over the past three years,” said Samir Salman, chief executive officer for Continental North America. “This investment demonstrates Continental’s commitment to deliver quality products to our customers and to the future growth of the automotive industry.”

A result of the rapid growth in business is in parallel an increase in employment opportunities: More than 200 new employees were hired in the last three years in Fletcher. The plant is part of the Hydraulic Brake Systems Business Unit of Continental’s Chassis & Safety Division and has become a strong contributor in the company’s strategy to further develop foundation brake and EPB product segments in the region. The plant has been located in Fletcher for more than 16 years and currently employs more than 600 employees.

The next poll was performed by the magazine Auto Bild. Their 2.6 million readers were requested to decide which brands were best. In the lubricant category, Liqui Moly was victorious taking first place for the third year. Liqui Moly outpaced Castrol and Mobil. Here as well, Liqui Moly also took second place in the car care product category.

The magazine Auto Motor und Sport published the results of their reader poll. A total of 3.09 million readers we asked to name their best brand. The result for lubricants was also Liqui Moly for the fourth year in a row.

Pulling Out

All The Stops Providing full brake inspections and services starts with educating the customer and building trust

W

hen it comes to selling brake services, technicians are frequently faced with customers that base their repair decisions solely on price. They want the best quality at the cheapest price; and too often, brake services tend to be focused around friction material replacement rather than addressing bigger issues that could be compromising the safety of the vehicle.

But by appeasing the customer’s demand for the bare minimum, Ken Selinger, Akebono’s director of aftermarket sales and marketing for North America, says, “Vehicle owners ultimately have a responsibility to maintain the safety of their vehicle. By choosing lower quality parts they are unknowingly doing a disservice to themselves and may end up blaming the technician. By choosing to not use the best possible brake components, consumers may set themselves up for potential disappointment, and incur the inconvenience and added cost of a comeback because they didn’t follow their technician’s advice to use the best quality and safest components that are interacting as designed or as the OEM intended.”

This is why a complete inspection of the entire brake system – rotors, calipers, and even brake fluid and hoses – is paramount for properly diagnosing necessary repairs and to educate the customer on the importance of maintaining the entire brake system; as well as emphasizing the long-term cost-saving and benefits of choosing premium brake products.

The Inspection “It begins with a test drive. Verify the customer’s issue if there is one. If not, a fresh set of ears behind the wheel may identify issues the customer is not aware of,” says Dave Wagner, product manager with Raybestos Brakes. “I never quote a job without a complete four corner brake inspection – pull off all four wheels, visually inspect and measure the rotors.”

segment, adds that worn rotors, drums and calipers may cause uneven friction wear that could impact the performance of the brake system.

“It’s always best to inspect every single part,” continues Bob Leone, national sales for North and South America at AISIN World Corp. “Make sure the rotor has a smooth finish. If the rotor is out of spec, you’re probably going to get pedal pulsation or vibration. And techs also have to check that the caliper is operating properly and that the piston is retracting back into the housing so there’s no sludge built up there. If there is, the caliper won’t fit over the rotor and you’ll have to start all over again.”

Along with following the OE recommendations for routine maintenance, technicians should also consider environmental elements and how a vehicle owner drives. Wagner points out that in colder climates the salt used on the roads to combat ice and snow is very hard on vehicles and brake components. And high humidity causes rust and corrosion.

“And if you’re going up and down hills with a half ton pickup truck, you’re probably going to wear down your brakes faster,” says Michael Zhao, vice-president of sales and marketing for Inroble International Inc. “The more you apply your brakes, the more you might need to replace calipers.”

Other brake system parts that are often overlooked during an inspection are the brake fluid and the hoses. If contamination, dust or debris finds its way into the brake fluid it can result in rapid caliper piston seal wear, according to Wagner. And Bob Pattengale, automotive aftermarket division training manager for Robert Bosch LLC, adds, “Keep in mind that manufacturer recommendations cannot account for every environmental condition. Testing brake fluid should always be a part of any brake repair.”

This should include talking about the unique design features and benefits of premium products.

“Any time the customer – whether it’s the technician or consumer – is making a choice between good, better and best levels of technology, it’s important that he or she has a clear understanding of the differences between each option. Otherwise, the difference in their mind might simply come down to price, which isn’t a good outcome for the jobber, shop or consumer in the long run,” says Battershell.

Selinger suggests, “The main thing techs can do is remind their customers that brakes are a safety system and when you’re working on this system you need to use the best possible products.”

Fortunately for technicians and consumers, the price of premium brake products has become more affordable over the years. And Dean Weber, vicepresident of Proforce Automotive says the brake market overall is growing at a very healthy rate and the mid-grade brake job is the fastest growing market. For example, Proforce offers a mid-grade ceramic pad that comes with noise dampening shims and are “scortched in” for a smoother break in process. “[This product] allow installers to buy at an economy price, but sell the product as a mid-grade quality replacement pad. We’re also seeing a trend in the upsell to Geomet coated rotors. It used to be challenging to upsell to a better rotor, but with the price point closer to that of economy rotors, the technicians can now confidently upsell the consumer to a true premium brake job at an affordable price.”

Whether you’re recommending aftermarket or OE parts, it’s also important to note that vehicle owners need to understand the importance of matching quality parts that were designed to work together. “The interaction of the friction material and the rotor are the last safeguard between the consumer’s operation of the vehicle and safety,” says Selinger. “We scientifically manage this friction/rotor interface to ensure our customers’ safety. We account for the heat and thermal dissipation rates required of a braking system, potential operating extremes and then specify the perfect replacement friction. This takes the guesswork out of the process for the technician and results in delighted vehicle owners and more business for their shops.”

ProMax uses a positive mold technology which presses each individual pad to the backing plate, and its premium and mid-grade rotors have an electronic coating to deter rust. Ernie Fields, sales manager with ProMax Auto Parts Depot Ltd. says that ProMax’s brake pads are also “scortched in” to eliminate all break-in periods.”

“It’s important to pair high quality rotors with premium disc pads,” says Robert Backode, director of product management, braking components for Robert Bosch LLC’s automotive aftermarket division. “Rotors using inferior casting metallurgies can introduce hard spots and cracking, which can seriously degrade the performance of a high quality disc pad. And it’s important that a rotor match the OE configurations dimensionally and metallurgically. This means the rotor thickness and vane configurations match the OE dimensions as these were originally constructed to address the vehicle’s specific operating conditions.”

Certainly the cost of more premium products is higher, but Zhao and Selinger agree that if you consider the cost per mile, a properly serviced premium braking system is going to last a lot longer.

Enter the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) – a set of new specialized programs offered by the Ministry of Education that were made available to public secondary schools across Ontario in 2012.

The programs offer focused training in a variety of industries including transportation, agriculture, energy, and manufacturing, just to name a few, and customize the students’ secondary school education to suit their interests and talents.

Darryl Timmermans, the technology department head and SHSM lead teacher at North Middlesex District High School (NMDHS) in Parkhill, Ont., is now in his second year of running an SHSM transportation program. Timmermans, who was a licensed mechanic before getting into teaching at the rural southwestern Ontario school says, “I heard about the program and after looking into it, thought that it suited my school really well. We have a lot of farm kids and kids with hands-on backgrounds.”

The SHSM program at NMDHS covers all areas of the transportation industry such as automotive, small engine repair, heavy truck repair and farm equipment. Students in grades 11 and 12 must apply to qualify for the program, which includes an introduction to the transportation industry, four compulsory certification training courses – CPR, WHMIS, health and safety basics, and standard first aid – and three elective courses.

During the application process the students’ parents are involved as well. “You have to have the parents’ permission. And the biggest question I get from parents is about what their kid is going to get from this program. First, I tell them that they get to custom design their education to their interests. Second, the students get training and certifications related to the industry, making them more

ith the fast approaching launch of the new ILSAC GF-6 standard for vehicle motor oils, more information is slowly becoming available as to what blenders and vehicle owners can expect from the new specification. What is coming into focus is that new engine technologies and more stringent emissions standards joined with new mileage goals for vehicles are going to make these new GF-6 oils work harder than ever before.

These oils will be a lot thinner and more robust than what people have been used to, with approvals for an ultra-thin viscosity grade, 0W-16/SAE 16 being given the go-ahead under the ILSAC GF-6 moniker.

What is driving this? The need to meet new United States federal guidelines for improved fuel efficiency and emissions.

“The main driving force is certainly fuel economy,” says Kristin Kowolik, consumer product specialist and member of the Chevron Lubricants Product Life Cycle Management Team. “The current CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) standard for average required fuel economy is 34.9 mpg. In 2016, this requirement will go up to 37.8 mpg.”

By 2025, all vehicles and light-duty trucks sold in the United States will have to post 54.5 mpg of fuel efficiency, a near doubling of today’s approved mileage standard. They will also have to produce significantly lower emissions as well.

Oliver Kuhn, who works in research and development with the German-based oil blender Liqui Moly. And the way to do that is to have engines that can operate using thin motor oils.

“Thin oil shows less inner friction and thereby reduces the overall friction in the engine,” Kuhn continues. “Thin oil is one tool in the car manufacturers’ toolbox to reduce the ecological footprint of combustion engines.”

“It is Honda who is driving this program and is the main driver for this new GF-6 [thin] oil,” says André Bolduc, product manager, lubricants and car care with Auto-Camping Ltd. “Fuel economy and direct injection engines with turbochargers are pushing this. These engines have smaller displacements. In Europe, you have 1.8 litre engines in E-Class Mercedes. That is a pretty small engine, one that we once saw in the old Rabbit which was a much smaller car that today’s [Volkswagen] Golf. But you now have these small displacement engines in mid-sized vehicles. These are very high-tech engines that work much more powerfully than before.”

This is placing unique challenges on oil blenders as these new thin ILSAC GF-6 motor oils have to meet stringent specifications. Ian Hutchison, brand manager, Castrol Automotive with Wakefield Canada, says these will include: increased fuel economy throughout the oil change interval; enhanced oil robustness; protection against low-speed preignition; improved wear protection for ‘idle stop’ engines; and reduced aeration over the entire oil change interval.

But some engine makers are pushing engine designs that can operate on oils that are going to be even thinner than 22 SSGM April 2014

the 0W-20/SAE 20 motor oils that are going to be coming out under the ILSAC GF-6 specifications. Honda is developing and will soon roll out engines that operate on oils that will have a 0W-16 viscosity grade approved by the SAE. “SAE 0W-16 oils represent the new, lowest SAE oil viscosity classification defined by this technical organization,” says Scott Lindholm, Pennzoil global product applications specialist. “SAE 0W-16 oils are ‘thinner’ at high temperatures than other oils, SAE 0W-20, 5W-20, 5W-30, etc., in order to reduce losses from pumping thick oils in an engine to improve fuel economy.

SAE 0W-16 oil development is just one of the many engineering efforts to help automakers achieve the 54.5 miles per gallon target established for 2025. Of course, the challenge is to provide very thin oils that also provide wear protection.”

No two ways about it, it is going to be a difficult balancing act.

“Basically, there are two ways to reduce the motor oil’s viscosity,” says Liqui Moly’s Kuhn. “First, we can use thinner base oils — but then the motor oil suffers from higher evaporation losses. Second, we can use less viscosity improvers on the additive side. Already, today’s thinner oils like 0W-20 contain significantly less viscosity improvers compared to let’s say a 10W-40 oil. The true challenge for SAE 16 oil is the lubrication. A basic lubrication is ensured by the base oil. But the thinner the base oil, the less effective is this ‘natural’ lubrication and the more important is the lubricating performance of the additive packages. This is where lots of the research resources are invested right now, in developing next generation additives with improved lubrication properties.”

Wakefield’s Hutchison says there will have to be a balance between how thin the oil can become while still lubricating critical engine components. Not striking that balance means the engine will either not achieve the needed fuel economy or it will experience more wear and tear.

Hutchison explained this in greater detail in an email: “A lubricant must maintain a certain minimum sheared viscosity in order to provide adequate hydrodynamic lubricant and prevent friction between moving parts from causing wear.

Of course, with today’s additive technology, friction modifiers, ZDDPs, and shear stable polymers [it] allows us to reach lower SAE viscosity grades than ever before. The new SAE 16 grade that is being introduced with GF-6 for fuel economy benefits is a prime example. In order to ensure that wear protection is not compromised by fuel efficiency improvements, the SAE J300 spec for this new SAE 16 viscosity grade must have a minimum High Temp/High Shear viscosity.”

Feel. The final test in determining whether an OAD needs to be replaced requires a special OAD tool kit that can be purchased through your warehouse distributor or local tool supplier. Often, this is a five piece kit that includes a 17mm hex, 10mm external hex, Torx, triple square and a 17x20 spline tool.

With your kit in hand, make sure the engine is shut off and the keys are out of the ignition before performing this OAD check procedure. Using a pick tool, remove the one-time-use cap (plastic caps can be removed using a prying motion; rubber and metal caps need to be pierced in the center and then pried off ). Based on the particular OAD’s design, insert the correct tool into the shaft of the OAD and—while making sure the belt is tight—rotate the shaft of the OAD in both directions while the belt holds the pulley portion.

When the OAD is working properly, it should feel smooth in one direction and have a spring feel in the other (drive) direction. The OAD should be replaced if it’s locked up, freespinning or rough, or has no spring action.

Once you’ve determined that the OAD needs to be replaced, it’s recommended that the entire belt drive system—belt, belt tensioner and OAD—be serviced at the same time. If a bad OAD has been running on the engine, the belt and belt tensioner are likely to have been negatively affected and may also be close to failure, putting the vehicle at risk for a breakdown.

Understanding OAD technology is critical for shop owners and technicians alike in order to educate customers and ensure full customer satisfaction. Engine Additives

Additives and cleaners can be made part of a regular maintenance schedule if technicians take a bit of time to learn about how to use them

uel additives and cleaners are controversial for service technicians. Many will point to a previous history of using them where the results were not what they wished them to be; or with claims made by some makers of cleaners and additives being less than promised.

Additives and cleaners over the years have improved and the trend in the service industry is to use them judiciously when there is an obvious need and a clear benefit can be had for the vehicle owner. The question is not whether to use them, but when and how to safely use them.

“Most fuel additives are designed to remove deposits,” says Harry Hartkorn, head application engineer at Liqui Moly.

“Deposits are inherent to the system of combustion engines and every engine suffers from them sooner or later. They build up in the intake system, in the combustion chamber and in the exhaust system. Common reasons for deposits are short distance trips less than 30 kilometers which do not allow the engine to reach its operating temperature, and substandard fuel quality. Those deposits hamper the proper function of the engine. The newer the engine design, the less tolerant it is towards deposits.

“Additives can be used either as a preventative or to solve existing problems like loss of power, increased fuel consumption, rough idling, and so on. Those problems are not limited to a specific car segment although older cars being driven mostly on short distance trips are more likely to suffer.”

issues for the vehicle owner. “Bluechem’s Fuel System Cleaner binds and removes moisture from the fuel system while lubricating and cleaning all fuel system components. [It] is recommended every 20,000 kilometers or sooner if drivability issues arise.”

Pat Burrow, technical director with International Lubricants Inc., makers of the Lubegard line of automotive engine cleaners and additives, says questions of when a cleaner or additive should be used often come about when vehicle owners look to prevent problems from fuels that may not meet OEM requirements for their engine. “Fuel in North America contains [anywhere between] 10-15 per cent ethanol. For this reason and the advent of direct injection engines, the use of fuel additives and cleaning agents has become a necessary part of vehicle maintenance.”

“One of the biggest problems with ethanol is reduced storage life of the fuel,” Burrow explains. “The fuel/ ethanol blend has a 90-day product life in a closed fuel tank. Vehicles that are not driven frequently – seasonal vehicles, collector vehicles, etc. – can have problems with ‘bad’ fuel in as little as three months.

This is also true of hybrids that primarily run on battery and only consume a limited amount of fuel as a back-up energy source.”

Fuel || problems that can be addressed by service technicians with periodic cleanings that removes the carbon deposits that are often left behind on intake manifolds, valves and injectors.

The question then becomes how safe are these cleaners and additives. Some technicians remember when cleaners and additives caused more problems than they claimed to fix. In those days, the solvents used to clean an engine and improve its performance would often not fully break down the built-up contaminants. It would leave behind large pieces that would get pushed through the engine, resulting in damaged components. Sometimes the solvents would damage critical engine seals, pumps and injectors.

Bluechem’s Ma says Bluechem’s fuel system cleaner is made to protect against those possibilities as its formulation breaks down deposits enough that “they can be safely burned through regular combustion without clogging or fouling sensors and filters. Bluechem’s philosophy is to first lubricate, then clean.”

Ma claims that Bluechem’s oil system cleaner uses advanced detergents and dispersants to break down sludge, varnish and carbon around the ring areas and throughout the oil system to restore compression and performance to a vehicle’s engine. “[It] does not contain any simple alcohols so it will not dry out seals. In fact, we have special additives to help restore elastomer and seal performance.

[The oil system cleaner] is added to the used oil and the engine is run for fifteen minutes. The technician then continues to perform the oil change service. Using the engine’s heat and pressure, contamination in the oil system is broken down and evacuated through the oil change process.”

“Fuel system additives perform several different tasks depending on what the technician is trying to achieve,” adds International Lubricants’ Burrow. “Some only clean and some only stabilize fuel. They are safe to use as required maintenance in the case of direct injection engines in order to maintain performance.

Lubegard Fuel System Booster is unique because it is a three-in-one fuel system cleaner, lubricator and fuel stabilizer.”

Burrow continues that the fuel system booster contains a proprietary polyether amine detergent technology that is highly concentrated and performs well in all types of intake systems. “It also contains a proprietary FLA additive that provides lubrication of the fuel pumps and injectors improving oxidative stability and lubricity.”

“If the engine has been serviced on a regular basis, performing the flush with a mild, non-solvent based product such as Lubegard Engine Flush will safely remove varnish and deposits,” continues Burrow. “Add Lubegard Engine Flush to the engine reservoir sump and start the vehicle. Allow to run until operating temperature is reached. Shut down and immediately drain used fluid while still hot. The varnish and contaminants will flow out with the used fluid. Any flush that remains will cause no damage (unlike solvent based flushes) and the fresh fluid will not be affected or damaged by any residual flush remaining in the system. [It] is formulated using detergent and dispersant agents that clean in a manner that will not damage seals or cause large amounts of contaminant to accumulate in clumps. The detergents displace the varnish and deposits holding them in suspension in the used fluid until drained at the end of a warm-up period.”

Ma says any vehicle will benefit from regular injector and combustion chamber cleaning. “However, with today’s direct injection engines, it is increasingly imperative to keep the combustion chamber, valves and injectors free from contamination.”

the intake valves and will help “restore the vehicle performance back to the manufacturer’s [engine] specifications.”

“When performing a flush on any engine it is necessary to know the service history,” Burrow’s adds.

“High mileage engines that have been neglected can be a big problem if the technician tries to use an aggressive flush (such as solvent based product) to remove the sludge and deposits. Very often the end result is an engine that starts to experience problems like leaking seals and improper function.

“Make sure the customer understands the possible negative results before flushing a high mileage unmaintained unit. If

the engine has been neglected and there are heavy deposits of sludge it can be difficult to remove once it is displaced. Sometimes the sludge is holding things together and the end result of an aggressive solvent based flush is leaking seals and clogged passages and filters.”

“Of course, it is important to stick to the instruction,” adds Liqui Moly’s OPTIONS Hartkorn. “It is similar to medicine: the dosage makes the venom. Applied in the proper manner, additives are completely safe and there is not even a small risk of damaging the engine.

It Is Not Just An

Oil Change

here is no such thing as “just an oil change.”

For years in our industry, the oil change has been used as an excuse for poor communication between the service facility and the customer. Let’s get the vehicle in with a cheaply priced oil change and when it’s on the hoist we will look for and try to sell immediate work with a common excuse for the lack of sales being that the customer has no money.

If we step back and put ourselves in the customer’s shoes, think about how we would react if our expectation was that we were just coming in for an oil change and now it becomes, “You need $400 worth of work and we need to keep your car all day.”

If you as the vehicle owner haven’t budgeted the time or the money for the work, the likely response will be, “Just do 34 SSGM April 2014

the oil change for now and I’ll think about getting the other work done later.” The problem is the needed work doesn’t go away, but it piles up and gets added onto the next service interval, which may again be perceived as just an oil change.

If all of the systems on a vehicle have a life cycle, and most systems can be monitored, then there should be no excuse as a service professional to not be aware of this and communicate service needs ahead of time, not just when the vehicle comes in for that oil change.

The challenge for a service operation today is that with new vehicle technologies and better quality parts, the intervals in the maintenance schedule for many of today’s vehicles is spread out over a greater number of kilometers than before.

Contributed Editorial || months or 8,000-16,000 kilometers. Some parts and systems on today’s vehicles are rated to last up to 160,000 kilometers before needing to be serviced or replaced. We also see that the factory service schedule may not include servicing some of the sub-systems during the scope of the warranty period, with the implied conclusion that they should never be serviced.

At the same time, preventative maintenance is more crucial than ever in order to keep the vehicle operating safely and reliably.

That is where the need to improve our communications about the most frequent maintenance opportunities comes in. J.D. Power and Associates’ most recent look at customer satisfaction with dealership and independent service operations points to how extended service intervals are changing the dynamic of the service visit. Today’s customer is likely to visit a service operation only twice a year rather than three or four times a year as was common before. It is during those times that service operations need to be identifying and pre-selling preventative maintenance, needed inspections and maintenance service on vehicle systems and presenting a budget for the work needed during that next scheduled oil and fluid change.

Today’s vehicles also demand oils and fluids that have to be correctly matched to the technology. A mistake can be costly. Technicians have to keep several important things in mind when doing an oil or fluid change: • Energy efficient engine designs now run hotter and have tighter tolerances • Is the engine diesel or gasoline powered? Does it operate with flex fuel and biodiesel?

• Performance designs, including turbocharging and supercharging will dictate what kinds of oils and fluids can be used • Diesel EGR will also dictate the oils and fluids used • GDI • Various viscosities to meet CAFE requirements as well as internal technologies: • VVT (variable valve timing) • MDD (multi displacement on demand) • Hydraulically actuated timing chain tensioners • Low tension rings The options available to service these technologies are also growing every year: • Mineral based petroleums • Semi-synthetics • Full synthetics • Engine cleaning chemistries to minimize the effects of combustion • Soot control in diesels • Piston ring cleaning to maintain compression www.ssgm.com

• Oil conditioners and fortifiers to improve the function and service life of oil.

Too often, we allow vehicle owners to take a mandated oil change to a quick lube operation. We believe an oil change, on its own, is not enough of a revenue generator or that it is a loss-leader for attracting business into the bays on slow days. Sure a quick lube operation will change the oil and filter and have the vehicle on the road in half-an-hour for $70; but think for a moment about all the other critical vehicle systems that are neglected during that oil change: • Who monitors the rest of the vehicle systems?

• W ho maintains the rest of the vehicle?

• W ho monitors the safety systems of the vehicle? (A Master Tech?)

• W here will the owner take the vehicle when it breaks down?

• Does this enhance ownership satisfaction?

• Does this enhance brand loyalty?

• Does this enhance reliability?

Too many service providers build their business model on waiting for something to go wrong with a vehicle, rather than building a business model of preventing things from going wrong.

If we work with the old breakdown business model, then we create a situation of having customers coming to us unprepared for the time and cost of needed work to be done to their vehicle. In the end, the vehicle owner will leave the shop frustrated with the whole experience and not return when yet another problem comes up. This is not the way to build a long-term relationship with the customer.

There are reasons why family physicians and dentists schedule regular exams. If your dentist did not schedule regular cleanings, examinations and x-rays to monitor the condition of your teeth, they could not help you prevent a dental problem from happening or catch a problem early enough so that it can be fixed before it becomes bigger. Regular examinations will certainly not stop all problems from happening, but the dentist will be able to catch something and book a time needed to fix it, a time that works with both the client’s schedule and theirs and perhaps even help in budgeting for the needed procedures.

Why do all this?

They know if you are aware of the need and that they brought it to your attention, then they are more likely to get the business.

So that oil and fluid maintenance is still fundamental to our business as it is an opportunity to educate vehicle owners on preventative maintenance, and the first step to building profitable customer relations.

et’s start with a little background on Volkswagen’s new EGR system. To meet the extremely tight Tier2 Bin5 standards for emissions (maximum of 10 milligrams/ mile particulate matter and 70 milligrams/mile NOx for diesel vehicles) the new Volkswagen 2.0L CBEA TDI diesel engine uses a complex EGR system in conjunction with a diesel oxidation catalyst + diesel particulate filter (known as the DOC+DPF), a NOx storage catalyst and a H2S (sulfur) catalyst to achieve efficient NOx and particulate matter reduction.

The EGR system consists of two parts: High Pressure Side - Exhaust gas is recirculated from the exhaust system after the Exhaust Manifold and controlled by a High Pressure EGR Valve. Exhaust gas is then fed into the Intake Manifold after the Throttle Valve.

ow Pressure Side - Exhaust gas is recirculated from the L exhaust system between the DOC+DPF and the NOx storage catalyst. Exhaust gas is then fed through an EGR cooler and Cooler Flow Control Valve to the intake air system at the turbocharger compressor inlet. An Electronic Exhaust Throttle Valve is included between the NOx storage catalyst and the H2S catalyst. This valve is used to control differential pressure between the NOx storage catalyst and turbocharger and assists with Low Pressure EGR return flow and catalyst regeneration.

In addition, there are two EGR pressure sensors and four exhaust gas temperature sensors to measure the flow state, temperature and general health of the Exhaust After Treatment components.

Close monitoring of the EGR and Exhaust After Treatment components is critical for NOx reduction and proper regeneration of the DOC+DPR catalyst, the NOx storage catalyst and the H2S catalyst. A failure of any component will lead to excess emissions, and could potentially lead to failed catalyst regeneration cycles and eventual failure of the Exhaust After Treatment components.

WHEW! OK, so what does this all have to do with trouble codes P047A (DTC 001146) Exhaust Pressure Sensor 2 (G451) Open Circuit P047B (DTC 001147) Exhaust Pressure Sensor 2 (G451) Implausible Signal? The codes indicate a potential problem with the G451 Exhaust Pressure Sensor 2 signal (implausible) or wiring (open circuit). This sensor monitors the pressure and flow in the Low Pressure EGR system.

The function of combined Low Pressure and High Pressure EGR system operation is continuously adjusted depending on engine operating conditions and RPM. No-load engine operation results in high amounts of High Pressure EGR applica-

tion and low amounts of Low Pressure EGR application.

With rising engine load and engine RPM, the recirculation of exhaust gases is shifted to the Low Pressure EGR system to increase the recirculation flow rate. This allows for optimum NOx reduction at mid to high engine loads.

At high engine loads, the cooled Low Pressure EGR system is much more efficient than the High Pressure EGR system at adding the correct amount of exhaust gas recirculation for NOx reduction.

The G451 Exhaust Pressure Sensor 2 monitors flow rate of the Low Pressure EGR system from after the diesel oxidation catalyst and the diesel particulate filter (DOC+DPR) to the EGR cooler assembly. The trouble codes indicate a problem with the G451 Exhaust Pressure Sensor 2 Signal or G451 wiring or connections.

To test the G451 Sensor: Locate the G451 Exhaust Pressure Sensor 2 below a heat shield near the oil filler neck.

Inspect the exhaust pressure feed lines from the N213 EGR Valve 2 housing and from the base of the DOC+DPF assembly to the G451 Exhaust Pressure Sensor 2. The exhaust pressure feed lines must be intact, not leaking, not plugged or bent (Note: This is a critical step. Any leakage, restriction or damage to the pressure lines can cause the G451 to output an implausible signal.)

Inspect the G451 Exhaust Pressure Sensor 2 wiring as follows: • Pin 1 (Black wire) = 5-volt power supply, ignition on, from pin T94/14 of the PCM. • Pin 2 (Brown wire) = Good ground at all times from pin T94/79 of the PCM. • Pin 3 (Green wire) = Signal return to pin T94/34 of the PCM. Values are about 0.48 volts with no exhaust pressure.

The voltage will increase in a linear fashion as exhaust pressures increase.

Repair any wiring/connector defects as necessary.

I f the G451 Exhaust Pressure Sensor 2 output voltage does not react as described and all of the wiring and pressure lines are OK, then the sensor is faulty and must be replaced.

In this particular case, the wiring to the G451 Exhaust Pressure Sensor was damaged. After repairing the harness normal G451 Exhaust Pressure Sensor operation was restored. Needing and Managing

the Human Element in Your Shop

“T

his business would be a lot easier if it wasn’t for the human element.” I hear this comment on a fairly regular basis from shop owners. They are not referring to their customers, which I acknowledge can be a challenge, they are referring to their employees. Or I hear, “I never signed up for this human resources stuff. Why don’t people just do their jobs!” There was a time when a King ruled the land and everyone basically worked for the King. Most of us would have been known as serfs, wearing rags and living in dirt floor hovels.

Then there is the old saying, “He who has the gold makes the rules.” During the early industrial age people were paid just enough to eat and stay alive so they could come back to work. During the Depression people would do anything to have a job to feed their families.

And up until recently, many business owners, managers and bosses of any kind were accustomed to saying “jump” and we as employees would say “how high?!” mostly because there were usually many more people than there were jobs.

But as many of you have noticed, times have changed. It is no longer legal to use corporal punishment to motivate employees. Things other than money motivate many employees.

The shortages of employees in some trades and fields of work have put the employee in the proverbial driver’s seat, and in addition to that, many of the current generations of employees when asked to “jump” ask “why?” More and more employees in the developed world want to know how their job contributes to the better good of the company

they work for or for the community in which they live. They need the job for the money, but they don’t just do the work for money or for a sense of duty like many of our parents did. They want to have a say in their work place, they want their job to have a creative element or to be challenging rather than monotonous, and many employers don’t know how to handle that, they take it as insubordination. Before

I launch into the rest of this article I want to remind all of the readers that 1) we have all been an employee at some time in our lives and we need to remember what that was like, and 2) there are a lot of really good employees in our businesses and we need to acknowledge them and be grateful for that fact.

Managing Today’s Employees My thoughts in this article are a natural sequence to the last two articles I wrote; the last one about clarifying your role

as a manager, and the previous one about what it takes to be a business owner. Once you begin to have clarity in these roles, your role as a leader will become more effective. You then will be able to focus on helping your team get the results that the business needs to prosper. As business owners with little training in this area we make several common mistakes. And we don’t make these mistakes once; we repeat them over and over again. 1) We hire friends and family because we want someone we can trust; however, we do not lay out clear expectations of performance and we end up with employees that feel privileged. 2) We tolerate poor performance on the part of one employee.

We do this because of the fear of a confrontation, because we are lazy, because we are too busy putting out fires, because we might not find someone else, or we have let it go on so long that the financial costs of severance prohibit us from moving on. Imagine what your good employees feel about working for your company when you put up with this. Hey wait a minute, I remember now; you can’t find good employees anyways.

3) We don’t communicate well with our employees. This includes current standard operating procedures or any new changes that are coming to the business. We don’t communicate our expectations, we think or hope they can read our minds. 4) We don’t give our employees feedback of any kind. How do they know if they are doing well or not? I call it managing by emotion. If the boss is in a good mood I must be doing a good job, if the boss is in a bad continued on page 42 www.ssgm.com

mood, I must be doing a bad job. But enough about the challenges, let’s talk about solutions.

Let’s start with the existing team members. The first thing is to create or acquire and modify some job descriptions for each position in your company.

A job description will describe the skills and attributes required for the position. It will have general descriptions of duties and responsibilities and the standards by which these will be carried out.

Don’t create the job descriptions to fit the current employees; rather create the position and the job description for it.

Your current employees will then need to be trained for that position. In a way, they would all be hypothetically reapplying for their new job. And maybe even with training they might not be the right person for the job, and some difficult decisions need to be made. On a more positive note, most employees when they receive clear direction and expectations are much better performers and less stressed. This article is about drawing the best out of our teams, not beating it out of them.

Having the Right Management Tools It is important to have several different tools rather than trying to jam them all into one. The next document to begin work on is your SOP Manual (Standard Operating Procedures). Flying by the seat of your pants is over. By standardizing all of the systems and procedures, service and repair processes, your business will begin to get consistent results. What is your customer write up process, vehicle inspection process, test drive process and so on and so forth?

Yes, I train shops to use the same test drive route for all test drives. That way you will know how long it takes, the roads and turns are the same, and just the vehicles are different. Have shop cleanup checklists; tool and equipment maintenance and service checklists.

Another important document to create or have created is your employee handbook. This book has all your company benefits listed, how and who qualifies. It outlines cell phone and Internet use policies, as well as lunch breaks, coffee breaks and smoking policies. I will also include vacation 42 SSGM April 2014

policies, statutory holidays and overtime policies. Many shop owners express frustration with how vacations are booked, but unless you have a policy, you are going to get what you got. You could include your company occupational health and safety documentation as part of this, but many well-implemented shops have this as a separate handbook.

Next we need to create a positive employee review process. One of the key things that employees are looking for is feedback on their performance.

Too many owners see a review process as waiting till their frustration builds up to a point of anger, calling the employee into the office and unloading on them.

This needs to be a positive process. I recommend having reviews at least twice a year. I don’t think that performance reviews should necessarily be tied to pay increases. Even though an employee’s performance has a direct effect on the profitability of the company, I prefer to separate these conversations. The performance review is about giving positive feedback and constructive coaching, and training in areas that need improvement.

In addition, I believe that employees all need to be trained on some of the basic financial and operational numbers that they have a direct effect on. I would then use this knowledge in a separate wage review. A one-page performance review document is all you need. Don’t over complicate this process. Make sure that the employees are made aware well in advance of this process, and ensure these are done by appointment rather than on the fly. Provide a copy of the review to the employee for them to review prior to the actual review. The last step in this section is to create a way for the employee to review the company and the management.

Although I am addressing staff meetings near the end of this article, it is probably the first practice to add to your business. Many shop owners have never had staff meetings besides the occasional yelling session. Others have tried and stopped because they always seem to spiral into negative whining sessions. And many employees only experience staff meetings when the boss has had enough and needs to dump on them. I would recommend regular staff meetings, quarterly at a minimum, monthly is great, and many top shops have a short weekly meeting as well. These meetings should be between 30 minutes and 45 minutes long, the weekly ones could be as short as 10 minutes. There should be a prepared agenda with a short amount of time allotted for “other” topics. The agenda should include topics such as operational successes, operational challenges, equipment needs and or repairs, suggestions from employees and new announcements from management. For example, staff meetings are a good place to present job descriptions, handbooks and the review process.

Make sure that individuals are not singled out during staff meetings, which is saved for the review process, or an individual meeting.

Fundamentally, human beings will not make long-term changes in their behaviour based on negative threats or logical arguments. People need to want to change. This change happens when people see how this benefits them morally, ethically, communally and lastly financially. As individualistic as our society is, people like being part of a community or a team. The more they feel part of the team the better their participation and performance. SSGM

continued from page 22 One of the issues that will surround this new ultra-thin SAE 0W-16 oil is that it is not designed to be backwards compatible, meaning that is should not and cannot be used in today’s GF-5 engines, says Robert Skaggs, vice-president, sales and marketing, Blue Water Group, the distributor of Mobil Lubricants. “This new J300 initiative is meant to address the high temperature grade range (i.e. SAE 20, 30, 40, etc.) of multi-grade oils with no change being effected on the low temperature grade range (SAE 0W, 5W, 10W, etc.). The primary aspect is to directly affect the ‘flow characteristics’ of the high temperature range - thinner = greater flow characteristics = less friction/drag in the engine = better fuel economy.

Yes, the kinematic viscosity will be much better as well - 6.1 mm2/s minimum to <8.2 mm2/s maximum, at 100 degrees C. “The minimum high temperature high-shear rate viscosity is 2.3 mPa•sec at 150 C. (As a reference, the kinematic viscosity of 0W20 via J300 will be revised as an SAE 20 oil’s kinematic viscosity, which currently is measured at 100°C (212°F) and was 5.6 cSt to less than 9.3 cSt. Under the new J300, the minimum kinematic viscosity will be increased to 6.9 cSt to bring

the other oils to come out under the GF-6 specification. One suggestion is to identify SAE 0W-16 oils with a GF-6B specification.

“The SAE 0W-16 grade will clearly be identified with the new viscosity grade clearly shown on the label of the engine oil as all viscosity grades are now,” says Pennzoil’s Lindholm. “There is consideration being given by API to the use of a unique symbol to aid in the identification of low viscosity oils which may be suitable for use only in engines designed for these low viscosity products.”

“There are discussions among industry leaders of having a unique ILSAC starburst symbol for the new viscosity grades but nothing has been decided or finalized yet,” adds Chevron’s Kowolik. “ILSAC GF-6 will be split into two categories. ILSAC GF-6 A will include all current viscosity grades and will be backwards compatible. Copper is a highly toxic substance and many brake pads in the market contain over 20 per cent of copper. As brake pads wear, copper and other metal contents are deposited on highways and washed into our rivers and lakes.

GM’s New Modular Ecotec Engines are More Adaptable, Efficient A new generation of Ecotec small-displacement engines streamlines General Motors’ global powertrain portfolio with a modular architecture that broadens its adaptability to global markets and reduces manufacturing complexity – while offering customers leading-edge efficiency, refinement and durability.

The new engines were developed for GM’s global vehicle portfolio and will power many of the company’s highest-volume small cars and compact crossovers – including the next-generation Chevrolet Cruze specifically tailored for China, which launches in 2014 as a 2015 model.

By 2017, more than 2.5 million new Ecotec engines are projected to be built annually in at least five manufacturing locations around the globe: Flint, Mich. (U.S.); Shenyang, China; Szentgotthárd, Hungary; Toluca, Mexico; and Changwon, South Korea. The Flint facility alone represents an investment of more than $200 million in technology and tooling to support the engines’ production.

“Transportation solutions vary around the world and GM is committed to developing engines matched to the needs of the regions where they’re sold,” said Steve Kiefer, GM vice-president, Global Powertrain Engineering. “The new engine family is designed to achieve segment-leading refinement and efficiency, and will make its way into five GM brands and 27 models by the 2017 model year.”

The new Ecotec portfolio will include 11 engines, with three- and fourcylinder variants ranging from 1.0L to 1.5L – including turbocharged versions – and power ratings ranging from 75 horsepower (56 kW) to 165 horsepower (123 kW), and torque ranging from 70 lb-ft (95 Nm) to 184 lb-ft (250 Nm).

The architecture is also designed to support hybrid propulsion systems and alternative fuels.

The first production applications include a 1.0L turbocharged three-cylinder for the Opel ADAM in Europe, and 1.4L turbocharged and 1.5L naturally aspirated four-cylinder engines for the 2015 next-generation Chevrolet Cruze in China.

The turbocharged variants enable the engines to deliver the power and torque of larger-displacement engines with the efficiency of smaller engines.

For example, the turbocharged 1.0L three-cylinder used in the Opel ADAM makes as much power as the naturally aspirated 1.6L four-cylinder it replaces – with an estimated 20 per cent improvement in efficiency.

In fact, the new Ecotec family is on the leading edge of efficiency, with the new 1.4L turbo up to five percent more efficient than the 1.4L turbo engine it will replace. The new Ecotec engines also deliver segment-challenging refinement. The LEDP5W-TP1-50CR work area light tower provides operators with a very versatile lighting solution for operations where easily managed mobile illumination is required. It comes complete with an IP68 rated 150 watt LED light head, an aluminum quadpod, and 50’ of 12/2 SOOW cord in a retractable cord reel. The LED light head mounted atop of a 7’ to 12’ extendable quadpod produces 14,790 lumens of flood light capable of illuminating an area 540’ in length by 480’ in width. The LED light emitter contains thirty CREE XLamp XPG five watt LEDs producing 493 lumens each that are arranged in a heavy duty aluminum housing to produce a 60° flood beam ideal for use as mobile work and area lighting. The LED unit is waterproof to three meters, sealed against intrusion by dust and dirt, and very ruggedly constructed to withstand the most demanding environments, conditions and applications. Ford Turbocharger Hose Kits Gates is first-to-market with its complete Ford silicone hose and clamp kits for turbocharger applications. Research has shown instances of OE turbocharger hose becoming oilsoaked and subsequently failing, rendering the system inoperable until the hose is replaced.

Currently, turbocharger replacement parts are often only available at the OE dealer, making it harder to find parts when needed.

Additional parts to complete the repair, such as clamps, can be hard to find, leading to extra sourcing time and inconvenience. The Gates OE+ turbocharger hose solution prevents oil permeation and the T-bolt clamps provide better sealing. The all-in-one kit has all of the parts, including turbo charger hose, and two correctly fitted T-bolt clamps, needed to complete the repair.

Programmable Sensor Add-on Package for Snapon TPMS3 The Snap-on TPMS3 Tire Sensor System Tool just got a whole lot better with the introduction of the Snap-on Programmable Sensor Add-on Package (TPMS3PRG). With this new capability, service technicians can program replacement or duplicate aftermarket tire pressure monitoring sensors, saving time and reducing sensor inventory. The new Snap-on TPMS3PRG is an optional activation that allows users to utilize their existing TPMS3 tool to program aftermarket TPMS programmable sensors.

The TPMS3PRG can replace a sensor with low battery life or one that is non-functioning, as well as create a duplicate set of sensors for customers that change from summer to winter sets of tires.

The TPMS3PRG works with all the major aftermarket sensors including: EZ-sensor, Alligator sens. it, Dorman DiRECTFIT, Standard Clone-able, NAPA Echlin Clone-able, Intermotor Cloneable and OEC ID Copy (Orange). The Snap-on TPMS3PRG kit consists of a registration certificate containing a web TPM code which allows access to sensor programming functionality and a 2GB micro SD storage card. The kit requires TPMS3 software version CS2-02 or newer. TPMS3PRG is a one-time activation to program aftermarket TPM sensors and subsequent updates to TPMS3PRG are part of the standard TPMS3U annual update.
