Time to Recover and Rebuild

î°óìÔÅñÆ Áå¶ î°óÀ°ÃÅðÆ çÅ Ãî»
s of January 1, all federally regulated employers have new compliance requirements with respect to workplace harassment and violence. In this regard, Trucking HR Canada has launched an online Learning Centre offering a suite of resources to help employers in meeting these requirements. We encourage all industry stakeholders to take advantage of these resources to meet the new Canada Labour Code requirements. Immigration consultants have been under scrutiny for some time for alleged malpractices, especially in the recruitment of truck drivers from abroad. The Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) recently issued a warning against trucking companies and immigration consultants against the abuse of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP). The warning focused on the abuse of the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) process, which allows companies to hire people under the TFWP. As per federal government announcement, a legislation that will regulate immigration and citizenship consultants is now in force. The College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants Act will provide a statutory framework to regulate the sector. It is also aimed at protecting newcomers and applicants to Canada from unscrupulous and fraudulent consultants. We welcome this development and look forward to enhanced enforcement to stop the abuse prevalent in the immigration sector. The Ontario government continues to support and invest in the trucking industry by making improvements to trucking parking across the province. The commitments to date by the government include improving 14 existing truck rest areas, building 10 new rest areas, and adding 178 additional truck parking spaces at four existing ONroute travel plazas. In addition to the infrastructure improvements, the rest areas will also become a key location for public awareness strategy to combat human trafficking. While welcoming these announcements, we look forward to timely and satisfactory completion of these projects as the industry seeks relief due to a large and persistent parking shortage. The second wave of Covid-19 cases continue to rise across the country. Until vaccines are more widely available, we must continue to follow public health measures to help stop the spread of coronavirus and many of its variants. We once again thank everyone involved in the trucking and logistics sector for stepping up as essential frontline heroes during this challenging time. With your ongoing support, we stay committed to help our industry respond, recover, and rebuild throughout all of 2021.

Three weeks after the government unequivocally rejected their demand, Ontario dump truck operators organized a “day of action” in Toronto on Wednesday, December 30th, taking their grievances over changes to weights and dimensions to provincial politicians. With the slogans “Don’t Dump on Us” and “Dump Trucks Move Our Economy” emblazoned on their rigs, the protesters first went to the constituency offices of local members of provincial parliament (MPPs), seeking their intervention to resolve the dispute. They later gathered outside the Ontario Legislature before driving in a convoy to the office of Transportation Minister Caroline Mulroney in Holland Landing, Ont. It was the third dump truck protest in as many weeks – the first was held in Toronto on Dec. 10 and the second in Windsor, Ont., on Dec. 28. But unlike last time, this protest was supported by other truckers as well.

New electric delivery vehicle to hit the market

Another upstart manufacturer has joined the electric delivery vehicle race, with a low-cost option that will launch in the U.S. in 2023 with a Canadian launch to follow soon after. Canoo will initially offer its multi-purpose delivery vehicle in two sizes, the MPDV1 and MPDV2, with a Class 3 truck and other offerings to follow. The first models will be available with three battery sizes – 80, 60, and 40 kWh, with the 80 kWh version available with DC fast charging in 28 minutes from 20% to 80%. “We created our multi-purpose delivery vehicle from the inside out, with the ergonomics of the driver in mind and with attention to detail to help them be happier and more productive at work,” said Tony Aquila, executive chairman, Canoo. “The vehicle is affordable and offers greater cargo capacity than the current electric delivery offerings in its class. We aim to lower the total cost of ownership and increase return on investment for everyone from local small business owners to large fleets.” Canoo says it will offer its delivery vehicles at pric- Photo: Canoo es beginning at around US$33,000. It will be accepting refundable US$100 deposits for orders. The vehicle was designed specifically with last-mile delivery applications in mind. It’s willing to work with retailers to custom-design the van for their specific requirements. The company, which is expected to commence trading on the Nasdaq, says its vehicles can deliver between a $50,000 and $80,000 return on investment over six to seven years, depending on use case, compared to traditional delivery vehicles. Other benefits it touts include: nearly 30% greater parcel volume than leading delivery vehicles; range efficiency for longer runs on a single charge; an ability to travel further per kilowatt of energy than competitive models; and excellent maneuverability for urban areas. We know these efforts have provided clear results and we expect they will continue to keep enforcement personnel busy for years to come,” said OTA’s president and CEO, Stephen Laskowski. “The efforts to date have been such a success and now there are even more ways carriers can send information to the WSIB.” OTA has indicated WSIB has recovered millions of dollars from Driver Inc. fleets and has levied adjustments totaling upwards of $800,000 to individual companies. “Compliant carriers in the industry would like to thank the WSIB for standing up for workers’ rights and ensuring companies pay the true cost of covering their workers,” said OTA chairman Wendell Erb. “At the end of the day, this is about companies doing the right thing, playing by the rules, and ensuring their drivers have the coverage they deserve.” The Canadian Trucking Alliance, meanwhile, is calling on shippers to ensure their transport providers are compliant. “In many cases, these companies have codes of conduct requirements for those they contract as well as corporate mission statement and values,” said Laskowski. “It’s time they realize that doing business with Driver Inc. companies flies in the face of many of those standards and could even put some of these shippers and receivers at risk.”

It is busy, and 2021 will not be like 2020,” said Gurminder Ahluwalia, account manager at Premier Truck Group, a major dealer for Freightliner. He expects business to grow at least 10%-to-15% in 2021. “Now is the time to place orders because the factory is getting busy,” Ahluwalia said. Indeed, the demand for both tractors and trailers are rising. Transportation intelligence provider ACT Research has projected that commercial vehicle demand will remain strong heading into 2021. Trailer orders are also rising sharply, with ACT Research saying that preliminary data point to six consecutive months with solid year-over-year gains in net orders.

ELDs on trips to the U.S., where the device has been mandatory since December 2019. Still, he is skeptical that the Canadian mandate will come into force as planned. “I don’t think it will happen. June is so close, and many companies are not ready. They might extend (the deadline).” Lidder of Trilink said his company is also ready to embrace the ELD mandate. “Our fleet is 100% equipped with ELDs,” he said. He doesn’t foresee any problem come June 12, as all of Trilink’s drivers are familiar with the system. He said Trilink’s transition would be very smooth. “Nothing to worry because we are prepared for it,” Lidder added.

LMIA stain Talking of the scandal surrounding the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP), Sidhu said it is a stain on the trucking community. There have been allegations that some fleets are cashing in on the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) process, which allows companies to hire people under the TFWP. Before any foreigner can be hired for a particular job, employers have to prove that no Canadian is available to fill the position, and that is done through the LMIA process. A positive LMIA could fetch tens of thousands of dollars, but selling them for cash is against the law. The government has vowed to crack down unscrupulous fleets and immigration consultants involved in the scam. “This is a bad thing. We don’t charge a penny for this,” Sidhu said. Lidder of Trilink said he is aware of the LMIA scandal, but Trilink itself doesn’t charge potential employees any money. “We are lucky that we have reliable drivers. We are happy for them and they are happy for us.” He said if someone from the community abuses the system, the authorities will look at everyone with suspicion. “And, that is bad ( for the community).”

olvo Trucks North America is powering ahead with plans to roll out a battery-electric truck, officially launching production of the VNR Electric in early 2021. “It’s a historical day for us, it’s a historical day for our customers,” said Volvo Trucks North America president Peter Voorhoeve, calling it a key step in the journey to sustainability. Early applications will include local and regional haulers, food and beverage fleets, and pickup and delivery applications. The lineup will include three configurations – a single-axle straight truck, and 4×2 and 6×4 tractors. Power and charging Bringing the mobility to the electromobility will be a pair of electric motors delivering 455 hp and 4,051 lb-ft of torque, managed through a two-speed I-Shift transmission. Operating ranges will reach about 240 km between charges, depending on the configuration. The range can be boosted by up to 15% through regenerative braking, adds John Moore, senior product manager – electric vehicles. And the 264 kWh battery can reach an 80% state of charge within 70 minutes when using a 150-kW charger. While cold weather can reduce battery range, this is being addressed with a glycol circuit that feeds through the truck, adding heat when required, Volvo officials say. With the batteries, the trucks are about 4,000 lb. heavier than their diesel-powered counterparts, says Brett Pope, Volvo Trucks North America’s director – electric vehicles. European experience The electric platform is largely based on the technology found in Volvo FE Electric trucks, produced in Europe, but it was

adapted for the specific needs of the North American market. Volvo made no secret about its plans to launch the lineup. It was one of the first OEMs to commit to producing battery-electric commercial trucks, and announced the targets as early as December 2018. There are no plans to stop there. Volvo has committed to a complete product line that will run on options other than fossil fuels as early as 2040. Its vision for longer-range vehicles includes hydrogen fuel cells, being developed in a partnership with Daimler. And commitments to natural gas and compressed natural gas also continue, says Magnus Koeck, vice-president – strategy, marketing and brand management.

Pre-production trucks There are currently 70 pre-production VNR Electric trucks on the road, produced under Low Impact Green Heavy Transport Solutions (Volvo LIGHTS) – a project leveraging US$21.7 million from the U.S. EPA and South Coast Air Quality Management District. Volvo officials stressed several times during the launch that initial rollouts will rely on financial incentives. Maintenance and financing Ongoing support beyond that will come in the form of the Volvo Gold Contract — a standard offering which includes preventive and scheduled maintenance, towing, and electromobility repairs, says Mark Curri, senior vice-president of uptime and customer support. The batteries themselves are designed for eight years of nominal use, depending on the application. Volvo Financial Services will finance the trucks over six years, through loans or lease options, adds Chris Roback of Volvo Financial Services.

International rolls dzàðéËôéñ é¶ ê¶ô ÕÆåÆ out new HX Series éòƺ ÁËÚ.ÁËÕÃ. ÃÆðÆ÷ International has launched its new HX Series vocational truck, giving it a more driver-centric design based on driver and fleet feedback. The new HX Series represents the first product released under Navistar’s 4.0 strategy and its Project Compass initiative, which focuses on flexible, modular designs. As such, it borrows the LT cab, but with modifications to ruggedize it for severe service work. A three-piece hood is crack-resistant and stronger than fiberglass, according to Mark Stasell, vice-president, vocational truck with Navistar. He gave trucking editors a virtual walkaround of the new model this week, just prior to an online public launch. More comfortable seats were chosen based on feedback from fleets and drivers and the cab is now larger, with bigger windows for improved visibility. The truck can be spec’d with International’s highest-end trim package, Diamond Elite, and with a new line of heated and ventilated seats. The cab is structurally reinforced for severe service applications, and is protected with ChemGuard and LineX against corrosion. The front of the truck boasts a stylish mesh grille with bright surround, and marker lights are now LED, providing better nighttime visibility and longer life. A range of custom spec’s are available, including stainless steel visors, bright finish mirrors and additional stainless styling options. There are two models available: the set-forward axle HX520,

New ownership sets éò¶º îÅñÕ» é¶ ìÅÇÂ÷é ñÂÆ Bison up for future growth íÇò¾Ö çÆ åð¾ÕÆ çÅ ðÅÔ Ö¯Çñ·ÁÅ Bison Transport has new ownership it says will enable it to better meet its ambitious growth plans. On Jan. 1, James Richardson & Sons (JRSL), a Manitobabased conglomerate whose businesses run the gamut from agriculture to oil and gas production, reached a deal to take over the company from the Jessiman family. Bison was founded in 1969 by Duncan Jessiman and the family’s holding company Wescan has continued to own the company since. Bison has become one of Canada’s most prominent trucking companies, operating more than 2,100 tractors and 6,000 trailers across North America, with more than 3,700 employees and contrac- Photo: Bison Transport tors. It also owns H.O. Wolding, Searcy Trucking, and Britton Transport. Bison will continue to operate under its current brand, and there will be no changes to its executive or management team. The change in ownership will be seamless for employees, contractors and customers, said Rob Penner, president and CEO of Bison Transport. However, expect to see Bison making a bigger splash in the mergers-and-acquisitions space. The company has an aggressive five-year plan to reach $1.5 billion in sales, representing more than 50% growth from current levels, and that includes $500 million to come from U.S. operations – a key target for future growth.

Registration is now open for Trucking HR Canada’s virtual Women with Drive leadership summit, which will feature panelists from around the world. The meeting will be held March 10, and the theme of the conference is Linking Global Leaders, Trucking HR said last month. Speakers will share their stories of how the pandemic is impacting work in the trucking industry, it said. “The representation of women in the trucking and logistics industry remains an ongoing business issue,” said CEO Angela Splinter. “The Women with Drive leadership summit emphasizes the sharing of ideas, experiences and leadership best practices, and we are looking forward to having a global perspective.”

Volvo gives operators power over engine updates Volvo’s new Driver Display Activation feature places the power over remote engine updates into operator hands, giving drivers the ability to activate over-the-air system updates within minutes. Rather than requiring a call to a Volvo Action Service Agent to initiate a remote update, this cuts the updating time in half and allows the work at any time, Volvo says. All new Volvo trucks will have the Driver Display Activation interface available at no charge for the first two years, as part of a bundle with Volvo Trucks Remote Diagnostics.

TIRES
Goodyear Fuel-Max to maximize fuel efficiency Goodyear’s new Fuel Max LHD 2 tire, to be launched early in 2021, is targeting longhaul fleets that want to boost fuel efficiency. The drive tire is made with a “fuel-focused” tread compound that lowers rolling resistance to meet Phase 2 Greenhouse Gas emissions and fuel-efficiency standards, and is verified by Sm SmartWay. The tire’s TredLock technology includes double-corrugated blades to promote even wear b and maintain traction over time, earning a Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake designation. A premium enhanced casing also supports retreading, the company notes. The Fuel Max LHD 2 is expected to be available early in the year as a 295/75R22.5 (Load Range G), while a 11R22.5 (Load Range G) will follow. 11 ROADTODAY.COM

Cummins says the X15 Efficiency Series with Acumen is its most advanced and connected engine.

Samsara adds live streaming, mask detection Samsara has introduced three new AI Dash Cam features, including the ability to detect whether drivers are wearing masks. The dual-facing Samsara AI Dash Cams use artificial intelligence to determine whether the masks are in place. In addition to that, video feeds can be monitored by safety managers through live streaming, and shared directly with drivers to support remote and self-guided coaching. The streamed video can deliver road-facing images, inward-facing video, or both. But in-cab alerts notify drivers any time a live stream starts and ends. ROADTODAY.COM
Carrier Transicold ready to offer R-452A refrigerant Carrier Transicold will make R-452A refrigerant an option in both new and existing models beginning in the first quarter of 2021, covering trailer and diesel truck equipment alike. The new refrigerant is comparable to R-404A in terms of refrigerant capacity, pulldown, fuel efficiency and reliability, the company says. The key difference is that R-452A has about half the global warming potential of R-404A, with respective GWP ratings of 2140 and 3922.
