CMC Microsystems mired in funding crisis

After 34 years of serving as a driver to the success and growth of many high tech firms and educational institutions across Canada, Kingston Ontario-based, not-for-profit organization CMC Microsystems (CMC), has been “dumped to the street,” according to its president and CEO Gordon Harling.

CMC was first warned in 2016 that it would lose its historical funding arrangement with the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) – set to end its decades of financial support.

As a result, Harling has been busy pulling out all the stops to persuade governments and other stakeholders that its expertise and services in microelectronics, photonics and other cutting edge technologies are critical to Canada’s future competitiveness in advanced manufacturing and other key tech-based sectors.

With the deadline looming (June 20, 2019), the organization has been pursuing multiple avenues and approaches including changing its support model for microelectronics and associated research at academic institutions from coast to coast.

Its importance as a lifeblood to high tech incubation and fueling innovation in Canada cannot be understated, as CMC has focused on advanced manufacturing industries since 1984. Among its efforts, CMC has managed Canada’s National Design Network (CNDN), which provides researchers access to the world’s best design tools, manufacturing technologies, and engineering support for making micro-nanotechnologies, and for training industry-ready graduates.

Among its achievements includes simplifying access to state-of-the-art design, manufacturing and testing facilities for start-up businesses. CMC lowers costs of R&D for professors at universities and companies alike. These services provided by CMC are even more essential today, as the research and training required to advance Canada’s digital economy has been accelerated with the emergence of such sectors as Industry 4.0, autonomous vehicles, big data, Internet of Things (IoT), cyber defense/security, 5G, quantum computing, artificial intelligence (AI).

Over time, CMC had more educators seek to use its highend industrial tools to teach classes – not just research, but education, which is the job of the provinces and not the job of the feds, notes Harling. In an effort to offset the pending impact of funding withdrawal, CMC has also spent more time on the industrial side, conducting contract research for industry.

Based on the shut down timeline issued by NSERC and the absence of the $6.5 million CMC requires annually to function – CMC had to issue termination notices to all employees this October. In December fabrication runs cease and by March of 2019 access to all software packages and R&D platform partnerships will be terminated.

Operations will officially end this coming June.

“The university programs we’ve supported have generated graduates that demonstrate real industry strengths, speeding up their entry into the work force,” says Harling, a successful entrepreneur who has led several microelectronics companies.

Canada have been impacted by the efforts of CMC. “We ‘re a national network and we are in all 10 provinces, operating as a truly third-party organization,” Harling adds.

The CMC issued a pre-budget consultation submission to the House of Commons standing committee on finance this summer, detailing its position on the importance of advanced technologies to competitiveness.

“Advanced technologies are present in every major economic sector in Canada, but they are often taken for granted because they are almost invisible, highly-integrated components. Every technological product requires some form of intelligence and this is enabled using high-performance computing, microelectronics, micro-electromech­anical systems, photonics or nanofabrication,” read the statement.

The CMC went further to say, “Not-for-profit organizations generally provide the ‘glue’ that hold a nation’s ecosystems together. At present there is no coherent strategy, federal or otherwise, that links the various players in Canada’s micro-nanotechnology ecosystem or ensures that there are no critical gaps now or in the foreseeable future.”

BORÉAS TECHNOLOGIES TAKES PIEZOELECTRIC HAPTICS TO NEW LEVEL

After a long period of relative inactivity where haptics research was confined to a fairly tight group of companies and academics, the industry is about to be significantly disrupted and transformed by newer technology options.

Boréas Technologies of Bromont Quebec is among the many new players emerging by developing new advanced haptics solutions. Boréas recently released its developer kits to the public for the first time, which is focused on piezoelectric actuators.

Boréas Technologies’ founder and CEO Simon Chaput and his development team identifies their technology as ‘HD haptics’ due to its fast response time, wide bandwidths, potential thin form factors and more. However, piezoelectric actuators typically require driving at high voltage, meaning issues with efficiency or distortion can lead to poor power consumption, noise and other challenges. These issues and others have meant that, despite their clear potential, piezoelectric actuators have failed to penetrate the larger mainstream markets in haptics.

Boréas aims to help overcome the challenge with piezoelectric actuators.

The firm’s product, known as CapDrive was developed from the ground up to optimize power consumption, minimize noise and have a small form factor. The product was originally developed during Chaput’s PhD at Harvard, where the aim was to develop ultra-thin and efficient piezoelectric fans for cooling electronic devices.

Microsoft recently announced its plans for a state-of-the-art new headquarters located in the heart of downtown Toronto. With a move-in date set in Sept 2020, the facility continues with Microsoft’s plans to expand Canadian operations, including increasing staff, modernizing its real estate and growing its research lab in Montreal that is focused on artificial intelligence.

Microsoft says the move to Toronto will enable the firm to better serve its customers, collaborate with its technology partners and to attract top talent to a central location, one well served by transit and more accessible to universities and innovative new tech start-ups.

INTEL OPENS GPU LAB IN TORONTO

Global computing chip behemoth Intel, has opened an engineering lab in Toronto specifically for designing graphics processing units (GPUs).

Occupying two floors of the firm’s North York (Toronto) facility, Intel’s overarching goal is to working towards a proprietary GPU by 2020.

As a result of its decision, Intel has begun its hiring process seeking to fill such positions as hardware designers with a background in chip develo­p ment all the way to those with low-level coding experience, and all resources that revolve around artificial intelligence (AI), according to Denis Gaudreault, country manager at Intel Canada Ltd. Gaudreault says Toronto was selected due to its talent rich pool that has developed over the years around the various disciplines of chip development. Intel is not the first graphics

processing giant to expand operations in Toronto. The city also houses two key players in the GPU market, including Advanced Micro Devices and Nvidia Corp, which have both been developing standalone graphics processing chips for years.

“The kinds of things you can expect to see in the near future are multi-packaged microprocessors that can operate as a CPU and GPU and FPGA — all in the same socket package,” Gaudreault enthused during a recent visit to Toronto for Intel Experience Day — where top executives discussed how Intel is powering Canada through 5G, VR, AI, IOT among other areas.

The Toronto-based engineers that join the team can expect to work in concert with fellow Intel designers working from the firm’s Hillsboro Oregon and Folsom California labs, according to Gaudreault.

“This underscores the importance of a worldwide chase or hunt for talent in these specific disciplines. It is hard to find these people,” he adds.

Microchip Technology Inc. announced a new Internet of Things (IoT) rapid development board as part of an expanded partnership with Google Cloud, enabling designers to easily prototype connected devices.

The solution combines a powerful AVR microcontroller (MCU), a CryptoAuthentication secure element IC and a fully certified Wi-Fi network controller to provide a simple and effective way to connect embedded applications. Once connected, Google Cloud IoT Core makes it easy to collect, process and analyze data to inform decisions at scale.

MaRS Discovery District, together with its partner University of Toronto, is in the final stages of securing a lease for a new 24,000-square-foot hub at Toronto’s Waterfront Innovation Centre. Already under construction, the facility will create critically needed office space for Toronto’s fast-growing innovation community in close proximity to the city’s thriving Discovery District.

“As Toronto becomes a destination for global talent, venture capital and tech firms, demand for space is at an all-time high. It’s imperative that we develop new innovative and entrepreneurial hubs in communities across the city,” says MaRS CEO Yung Wu. When opened in 2021, the centre will create about 400,000-sq-ft of commercial space and accommodate an estimated 3,000 workers.

Rogers & UBC partner to build ‘real-world’ 5G hub.

Damon aims to revolutionize motorcycle safety

In the summer of 2016, serial entrepreneur Jay Giraud took a hiatus from start-up life to spend some personal time on his motorbike.While riding in places such as Jakarta, Indonesia, he became increasingly frustrated with the daily experience of being cut off — in part due to blind spots and lack of situational awareness that low-tech motorbikes provide. Overrun by motorcycles and heavy congestion, Jakarta provides motorists constant exposure to life-threatening circumstances, which led Giraud on the path to start Damon Motorcycles. His goal — to revolutionize motorcycle safety.

Prior to Damon, Giraud founded moj.io, along with some help from biz partner Dom Kwong, who was also behind the technology at Recon Instruments, makers of smart ski eyewear. They discovered that 160-million motorcycles are sold globally each year. They incubated withYamaha Motors and have since grown their team to include 14 R&D personnel and a CFO. “No one is solving motorcycle-related problems,” he says.

“And, I learned that motorcycling is 36 times more life-threatening than driving a car. This is what got me serious about the space.”

Cars now feature sensors, collision avoidance and autonomous capabilities. A self-driving motorbike would deprive its user of the joys of riding, so Damon is taking a staged approach in developing advanced driver assistance systems, using connectivity and AI. Among other patented features, Damon has developed a patent-pending haptic language that vibrates the handlebars to warn the rider of impending threats.

stakeholders about our opportunity. In Damon’s case, people pass over the idea that motorcycles are an interesting area for tech pretty quickly,” says Giraud.

“To the North American market, with our newer cities and wide roads, motorcycles may seem like a niche market.”

Damon knows that this couldn’t be farther from the truth. Most mega-cities in the old world are thousands of years old. Roads are narrow, congested and over-populated. Cars are just too big in many of those markets, making motorcycles a critical component in the daily lives of 1.5 billion commuters.

“In my 15 years doing startups, I have to say that the unobvious, hard-to-believe tech opportunities tend to be the ones that succeed. However, it takes a lot of outbound education, soap-boxing and relentless thought leadership efforts to get past the inertia that unbelievable ideas often face. It’s a lot like pushing a rope,” Giraud explains.

In the next six months he aims to build on his firm’s success.

Hammond Manufacturing puts custom touch on enclosure designs Latest Waterloo facility focuses on delivering modification services for multiple application uses BY STEPHEN LAW, EP&T

tions, driving by products related to IOT. Watertight products are also doing quite well, as the requirements to meet high IP levels dictates that the enclosures should be professionally machined. We also promote the concept of one-stop-shopping, where the machining, painting, and printing can be offered thereby reducing the need for an end user to subcontract these services.

Representing its fifth production facility within the Greater-Waterloo area, Hammond Manufacturing recently opened a 26,000 square-foot enclosure modification plant — focused on serving customer’s needs in a variety of application use sectors.

Marking its 100th anniversary year in 2017, Hammond operates facilities in Canada, USA, UK, Australia and Taiwan, however the vast majority of products are manufactured in Ontario.

EP&T Magazine took the opportunity to speak with Ross Hammond, business development manager of Hammond Manufacturing about the new modification centre.

How does this facility (on Colby St Waterloo) differ from the 117,000-square-foot facility Hammond opened in Guelph two years ago?

Our newest Guelph facility is focused on metal fabrication, mainly for our data communications cabinets. Our new Waterloo facility houses our 13 CNC machining centers, along with printing and assembly.

Will the two facilities operate in conjunction with each other on customer orders?

The Guelph facility houses our state-ofthe-art powder painting line, and is a key part of our modified enclosure production process. Many of our die cast aluminum enclosures will be painted in either stock or special colours.

What is driving the growth in need for modification of enclosures? Are there any specific application sectors leading this need?

Our customer base is very diversified and we are seeing growth across almost every sector. We are seeing notable growth in industrial control and sensing applica10 ELECTRONIC PRODUCTS & TECHNOLOGY / November/December 2018

Describe the variances in customization or modification requests from Hammond’s customer base.

We’ve really seen it all, from crude sketches on paper all the way to complete 3D software files. Our design team then takes over and helps bring the customer’s dream to reality.

What new capabilities has Hammond added with the expansion of this new facility?

Our increased square footage gives us more flexibility for light assembly. We have added in-house digital printing, which greatly increases the printing options available to our customers, particularly for smaller quantity orders where silk-screening may have been cost prohibitive.

And of course a main reason for the expansion was our addition of five new CNC machines in the last year, bringing our total in Waterloo to 15. (We also have six CNC machines in our UK facility which focus on our European customers.)

What is the turn-around time for custom product orders? What variables impact that time-line?

The front-end process for modified enclosures can take approximately one week, as we work with the customer on approval drawings and the first-article sample. This is an important check not only for ourselves to ensure that we are modifying to the exact requirements, but also for the EPT.CA

customer to double-check the fit of their components. Production time itself will vary from two weeks to four weeks, based on quantity, but, also on additional processes required. PEM inserting, painting and printing are some of the additional steps that may be required.

Enclosure inventory is rarely an issue, as we mould most of our own products, or maintain a large inventory of our products that are produced in our other worldwide facilities.

Describe the breadth of order sizes this new facility will accommodate (prototyping to small production runs)?

We see orders from five pieces all the way up to 10,000 pieces or more. At the higher quantities a customer may benefit from custom moulding options, but we do find that some customers are quite happy to maintain flexibility in their design and continue to use a machined enclosure.

What type of technical or engineering support is available to ‘newbie’ customers reaching out for help in the design process?

Our designers are always happy to spend time working with the customer to fine-tune their modification requirements.

Our design and sales team members have worked with thousands of configuations and are also familiar with many components, and as a result we can often help a new customer with their hardware and component choices.

We often say, with tongue-in-cheek, that customers should choose their enclosure first. It can be challenging to help a customer who has a specific circuit board size that won’t fit into an existing enclosure size

Describe the complications of being an enclosure provider, often regarded as the final step in the design process of any electronic device (meeting customer expectations, time-lines, etc.).

We often say, with tongue-in-cheek, that customers should choose their enclosure first. It can be challenging to help a customer who has a specific circuit board size that won’t fit into an existing enclosure size. Some enclosure styles such as extruded aluminum have some flexibility as we can vary the length to suit customer needs. Our honest suggestion is for customers to involve us early enough in the design stage so that we can ensure an off-the-shelf enclosure to fit their needs.

Speeding power rail timing verification with an 8-channel scope Challenges arise since inrush currents can place high transient demands on point of load regulators BY DAVE PERELES avoid multiple power-on resets.

This can be challenging since inrush currents can place high transient demands on point of load regulators. In this case the shape of power rail startup is as important as the timing sequence. Once you combine the various chip supply requirements, bulk supplies, reference supplies and multiple point-ofload regulators for other ICs in a design, you can get up to seven or eight power rails in a hurry.

Using a 4-channel oscilloscope to verify power rail timing in an embedded system can be time-consuming, but this is how most engineers do it currently. In this article, we’ll first look at why this can be challenging with a 4-channel scope for this purpose, and then we’ll show a few examples using an 8-channel

scope, which have becoming increasingly more common across the industry.

4 channel scope

One approach when using a 4-channel oscilloscope is to analyze the power system in blocks and using multiple acquisitions to check the timing block by block. To compare between blocks, one of the rails or a power good/fail signal can be used as a trigger and multiple captures can be taken, determining the startup and shutdown timing relative to the reference signal. Since acquisitions are taken over multiple power cycles, variations in the relative timing of supplies will be difficult to characterize. However, the range of variation of each supply from cycle-to-cycle can be determined by measuring

over multiple power cycles using infinite persistence on the scope.

Another common approach is to ‘cascade’ multiple scopes.This is usually done by triggering the scopes on one of the power supplies or on a common power good/fail signal.

Both of these approaches are time-consuming and require special attention to synchronize: Dealing with synchronization and time uncertainty requires care Aggregating data to develop a system timing diagram is possible, but time-consuming Complexity increases with the number of power rails to be observed Setups must be consistent One measurement channel

must be used to provide synchronization A mixed signal oscilloscope can provide additional channels for power supply sequencing.

For this to work, the MSO must have suitable voltage range on the digital inputs and independently adjustable thresholds.

For example, a traditional MSO option offers 16 digital inputs with independent thresholds for each channel making it suitable for most of the voltage levels you’d find in a typical design.

Note that this approach works well if the objective is strictly to measure timing relationships, but it does not allow for measurement of rise/fall times or the shape (monotonicity) of the power-on/off.

Using an oscilloscope with 8 analog channels cuts the time and hassle significantly versus any of the methods covered so far. With an 8-channel oscilloscope, power supplies with up to eight power rails can be characterized using analog probes. To measure turn-on and turn-off

Most electronics systems today use more than one power rail and many use four or more. A single IC, such as an FPGA, DSP or microcontroller can require several power rails, and these may have specific timing requirements. For example, a chip manufacturer may recommend that the core voltage supply stabilize before the I/O supply voltage is applied. Or, a manufacturer may require that supplies come up within a specified time relative to each other to avoid prolonged voltage differences on various supply pins.

The power-on sequence between processors and external memory can also be critical.

timing relationships on power supplies with more than eight power rails, a mixed signal oscilloscope with digital signal inputs and independently adjustable thresholds can also be used.

Turn-on delay

The switching power supply under test in Figure 1 produces a high-current, regulated 12Vdc output. This power supply is remotely controlled with a switch on the front panel of the instrument. Shortly after the switch is pressed, the +5V standby voltage is turned on, enabling the switching converter to start. After the +12V output is in regulation, the Power Good (PW OK) signal goes high to indicate to the load that the supply is reliable.

The +5V standby voltage signal provides a simple rising edge trigger for the acquisition of the relevant signals. Automatic measurements verify that the delay to the output voltage turn-on is <100ms, and the delay from output voltage turn-on to PW OK is in the specification range of 100 – 500ms.

standby voltage serves as the timing reference. The turn-on sequence is repeated 10 times and the timing variations over the 10 turn-on cycles are within a little over 1%.

In addition to the power supply sequencing, the rise-times of power supplies must be controlled to meet the specifications of some critical components in a system. Automated rise- and falltime measurements are also made based on voltage reference

points which are, by default, automatically calculated to be 10% and 90% of the signal amplitude of each channel. In the example in Figure 4, the rise-times of the positive supplies and the falltimes of the negative supplies are shown in the results boxes on the right side of the display.

The proliferation of power rails in today’s systems presents a significant test and measurement challenge. To optimize for power consumption, pe­r­formance and

speed, even a relatively simple system can have a 12V bulk supply, a couple of 5V supplies, a 3.3V supply and a 1.8V supply.

Verifying and troubleshooting the turn-on and turn-off sequence of these supplies can be more efficiently accomplished using oscilloscopes that offer more than the traditional 4 channels.

After the power supply’s main switch is turned off, the switching converter is turned off and the output voltage decreases.

The power supply is specified to remain in regulation for at least 20ms after the switch is pressed.

Most importantly, the PW OK signal is specified to fall 5 – 7ms before the +12V output voltage falls out of regulation, allowing the load time to react and shut down cleanly. As shown in Figure 2, the PW OK signal provides a falling edge trigger for the acquisition of the relevant signals.

If you can reliably detect people or vehicles, you can count them, record what time of the day they passed by and collect demographic information like gender — all of which has interesting applications for smart cities, urban planners, and marketers. Going one step further, by combining that data set with contemporaneous purchasing information, you can get actionable insights that can inform decision-making.

When designing a surveillance system, designers usually take a layered approach, identifying areas of risk and high value starting outside and working their way into the facility. Start with the perimeter installing radar detectors, motion detector sensors, thermal imaging or lowlight cameras. That’s layer one,

There is an array of options available for perimeter protection. Radar detectors are useful for accurate breach detection, as they can detect objects such as people or vehicles while also tracking information such as speed, direction and size. Now tie that radar to a nearby pan, tilt zoom camera and you have a reliable and accurate automated tracking system. This takes the onus away from the human operator who has to manually try to track the target. Nuisance alarms stemming from rain, snow, insects or shadows are eliminated.

Thermal image cameras are another popular choice, accurately detecting body heat of an object even at very long distances far beyond what the human eye can see. Temp differences can be detected to less than 0.5 C. It is also possible to tie the events or outputs from these devices to smart network-based audio systems. The video management system (VMS) sends an alert to the on-duty security guard who surveys the area only to discover a man walking his dog.

The system worked, but not as well as it might have. The false alarm wasted time and effort, taking the guard away from his post. Imagine the same scenario, but with more advanced cameras that detect the man but also recognize that he is walking a dog.

Now suppose this man isn’t just any man, he’s a terminated employee on the company’s black list. If a system is in place that can identify him by comparing him to a database of known people, the alarm it triggers this time could be critical, particularly if the individual is considered a security risk.

The promise of the future is that every object — no matter how banal — can become smart. However this promise is hamstrung by the difficulties of prototyping a potential idea and getting it to market. There are already existing means to prototype printed circuit boards (pcbs) today, but advances in 3D Printed Electronics (3DPE) offer a wider range of design possibilities to the engineer at a quicker turnaround time for a lower cost.

For entrepreneurs, the IoT boom has opened up possibilities of creating new products in existing markets. In 2014 a trio of smart air conditioning (AC) startups — tado, Sensibo and Ambi Labs collectively raised $500,000 in crowdfunding campaigns for their respective products. Existing businesses have stepped up to retool their own product line, re-configuring their products to become smart to protect and grow their market share. HVAC heavyweight GE Appliances recently released their own smart ACs. Edison famously said that Invention is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration — would a smarter Air Condition cool an overworked and vexed inventor better than before?

According to a recent survey of pcb designers and electrical engineers carried out

The survey showed that more than three quarters (76%) are already exploring the technology for design validation (31%), prototyping (40%) and low-volume custom manufacturing (29%), with 85% stating that accelerating product development was their primary concern.

Garmin Fenix 5 Shines Bright

Garmin International Fenix 5

ABI Research has been tearing down devices since 2011 and added wearables in 2013 once they had an established presence in the marketplace. Garmin released the Fenix 5 last year as its premier rugged GPS watch featuring a transflective memory-in-pixel (MIP) color display, which brightens with sunlight intensity for greater visibility. We tore down the mid-sized Fenix 5, although smaller and larger versions are available as 5S and 5X respectively. Garmin has since released an upgraded version the Fenix 5 Plus introducing features like Garmin Pay and built-in music storage. Here’s a look at the major electrical components that make up the Garmin Fenix 5.

Connectivity

Connectivity of the Fenix 5 has WiFi, BT, and GPS broken up into three separate SoCs although WiFi and BT do share an antenna. Atmel (now owned by Microchip) supplies the WiFi 802.11b/ g/n Link Controller (ATWILC1000B), Nordic provides BT LE functionality (nRF52832), and

(MT3333). Other front-end components are as follows: Maxim GPS LNA (MAX2693L), Skyworks WiFi/BT SPDT switch (SKY13351), STMicro WiFi balun filter (BALWILC1001D3), and GPS filters from Murata & Epcos (part of Qualcomm’s RF360 joint venture).

Sensors

As with most wearables, the Fenix 5 is loaded with sensors. At the heart, we find ADI (Analog Devices) providing the HR sensor front end (ADPD107) with Vishay supplying the photodiode (VEMD5080X01) surrounded by three tri-LEDs. STMicro supplies

two 6-axis combo sensors: accelerometer/gyro (LSM6DS3L/M) and accelerometer/ e-compass (LSM303AGR).

Lastly, we see the continued use by Garmin with a waterproof pressure sensor

Audio & Power management

Maxim provides a third component in the Garmin Fenix 5, with their wearable PMU (MAX20303) that handles charging and vibrator driving also. The Garmin Fenix 5 is the

second device we’ve noticed with the piezo buzzer uniquely mounted on the inside of the

PCB shield. The buzzer along with the vibrator provide feedback to the user.
