Robotification process well underway: Mfg to benefit Robots are part of our lives. Some may be more sophisticated than others but they are undoubtedly becoming more commonplace. Drones, humanoids, industrial robots, service robots, military robots - they come in all shapes and sizes. Bipedal, cylindrical or wheeled, these robots perform with eerily human capabilities that allow them to walk, fly and swim.

The term Robotification represents the process by which tasks normally performed by humans are replaced with machines of some kind. These machines could be mechanical or electronic.

You might think robotification is something that will happen in the future. Nope. It’s already started.

Advanced industrial robotics are at an ‘inflection point,’ with lower costs and higher capabilities set to reshape the global manufacturing industry, according to new research from Boston Consulting Group (BCG). It predicts that, in the next decade, almost a quarter of automated tasks will be performed by robots ñ up from 10% today.

As robots become more affordable and easier to program, smaller manufacturers will use them on a wider scale. This will greatly expand the market for robots and integrate them more deeply into industrial supply chains. Adoption will also vary by industry. Transportation equipment, computers and electronics, electrical equipment and machinery industries are expected to account for around 75% of advanced robotics installations through 2025. By that time, robots should be able to handle

almost half of manufacturing tasks in these industries.

“For many manufacturers, the biggest reasons for not replacing workers with robots have been pure economics and technical limitations,“ says BCG partner Michael Zinser. “But the price and performance of automation are improving rapidly. Within five to 10 years, the business case for robots in most industries will be compelling, even for many small and midsized manufacturers.“ The BCG study projects that investment in industrial robots will help lower the total cost of manufacturing labor in 2025 – as much as 16% lower on average. Depending on the industry and country, output per worker could rise by an estimated 10 to 30% over and above productivity gains that typically come from other measures.

“Regardless of whether it’s time to invest in next-generation robots, manufacturers everywhere should start preparing,“ says Harold Sirkin, a BCG senior partner. “They need to understand how costs and automation technologies are changing in their industries and what their competitors are up to. They also need to start training their workforces for new skills. Printed electronics symposium unveils keynote speakers CPES2015 to feature international experts in Montreal April 21-22 The Canadian Printable Electronics Industry Association (CPEIA), the united voice of Canada’s Printable Electronics sector, has lined up an impressive roster of international keynotes for the 2015 Canadian Printable Electronics Symposium (CPES2015) in Montreal on April 21-22.

CPES2015 will showcase the convergence of research and development, industry expertise, commercial effort and government support that gives Canada a tremendous opportunity in the explosive global market for printable and organic electronics (POE).

Raspberry Pi 2 board launches as six-times-faster The highly anticipated Raspberry Pi 2 Model B has been officially unveiled, operating six times faster than the previous model and boasting 1GB of RAM to run bigger, more powerful projects.

The Raspberry Pi 2 marks a major modification for the credit card-sized computer, with a new Broadcom BCM2836 ARMv7 Quad Core Processor powered Single Board Computer running at 900MHz with 1GB of RAM. The device boots up in less than half the time of its predecessor. All previous Raspberry Pi projects are compatible with the new Raspberry Pi 2 Model B, and the expanded GPIO pins, advanced power management and connectivity, make it possible to connect up to four USB devices, including some powered devices such as hard drives.

The 40-pin GPIO enables multiple sensors, connectors and expansion boards to be added, with the first 26 pins identical to the Model A and B boards, for full backward compatibility.

Dorigo Systems Ltd, contract manufacturers of printed circuit board (pcb) assemblies in the Pacific Northwest, has added some new production equipment in an effort to advance its manufacturing capabilities and increase throughput.

The Burnaby BC-based firm recently added Panasonic’s NPM-W modular placement machines to its newest SMT assembly line. The upgraded line includes four of the Panasonic units, capable of handling large pcbs up to 750 x 550mm, components ranging from 0402 metric (01005 imperial) to 100 x 90 x 28mm tall and connector sizes up to 150 x 25mm.

“We are continually investing in our infrastructure to

best serve our customer’s needs,” says Dorigo president Mark Pillon, P.Eng. “The introduction of these units ensures we can exceed current manufacturing requirements and be well positioned for our future growth.”

Harting marks double digit revenue growth in Canada HARTING Canada continues to experience double digit annual revenue growth, a trend which shows no sign of abating, says Jon DeSouza, president and CEO of Harting Canada and Harting North America.

The outlook for Harting’s Canadian and the US sales in fiscal 2015 is bright, he told trade media representatives gathered at Toronto’s Evergreen Brick Works. Key indicators suggest an acceleration of US GDP growth to the 3.0-3.5 percent range. “Strong US demand and the Canadian weaker dollar benefits manufacturers in Quebec and Ontario ñ our largest markets. We expect that to translate into increasing sales for our modular connectivity products in particular, as well as custom solutions like our North American-made backplanes and cable harnesses.”

Confronting the power supply make-or-buy decision

Why buying a power supply from a proven manufacturer is more efficient than building an in-house system

With so many power supply ICs and reference designs available today, it can be tempting for engineers building all types of systems – from industrial, lighting and medical, to communications to military – to consider designing their power supply in-house rather than purchasing a supply from a commercial power supply vendor.

For example, it might appear to be a cost-saving alternative to have an IC manufacturer design something for you since many of them will practically design the circuit just to earn the business.

However, engineers need to consider if designing a power supply in-house really makes sense. This article argues that, when it comes to larger off-line supplies in the range of 250W or above, companies are better off leaving the task to a proven power supply manufacturer who has the engineering knowledge and resources to design the supply to meet specific needs.

It explains how buying a well-designed power supply translates into lower unit cost, higher reliability and shorter time to market.

Considerations for designing an in-house power supply From my personal experience, I have seen companies who have designed their own in-house supply, only to find that they run into costly and time-consuming challenges after heading down that path.

I can’t tell you how many times someone has chosen the wrong part, topology or circuit only to have 3000 units in stock with failures mounting. Another problem is that they company fails to conduct full reliability and compliance testing before committing to volume production. For example, I have seen companies attempt to design their own power converters only to have reliability problems in production or in the field after copying a reference design assuming it was production ready.

And while it is not impossible, especially with today’s design tools and software, to create a reliable power supply, the odds often do not favor of the casual power electronics designer. Sometimes

companies will go out for quotes on a power supply and then assume internal resources will be are ‘free’ when in reality external solutions can fit the bill at less cost and effort.

The engineering time can then best be spent on the companies core product line vs trying to be a power supply company in addition to making their end product as well.

The following are questions that an applications engineer should ask before attempting to design a power supply in house. If an engineer answers “no” to even one of these questions, it is likely that building an in-house power supply will prove to be a time consuming, costly and frustrating endeavor. Even assuming an in-house design can meet all the technical requirements similar to a commercially available supply, it will difficult, or impossible, to make it pay off in the long run. In contrast, power supply manufacturers can offer the products, test equipment, and experienced staff that allows them to answer ‘yes’ to all the questions on the checklist.

Do I have the proper test equipment?

Frequency response analyzers, transient generators, Ac sources, IR cameras, EMI-RFI measurement equipment, hi-pot testers, power analyzers, electronic loads, electrical safety testers – these and many other types of specialized equipment are needed when designing a power supply.

Many companies simply do not have these items on hand and buying or renting them is inefficient and can be costly.

Furthermore, capital approval can take months or even years if it can even happen at all at certain companies.

Small, flexible and fast power supplies for R&D, design validation and ATE applications

Do my people have the necessary skill-sets?

To design power supplies, it is necessary to have a workforce with experience in magnetics design, power system pcb layout, as well as high-frequency power and grounding, and shielding techniques. Also, when the auto-router is turned off, manual layout skills will be needed. Additionally, during layout, the proper safety spacing techniques need to be considered in order to meet creepage guidelines.

Do I have thermal simulation software?

FlowTherm and magnetics simulation software such as Magsoft or other specialized CAD tools are necessary when designing a power supply.

Do I have the right expertise and equipment to meet safety standards?

This is a must when performing electrical safety testing on the power supply designs to ensure that they comply with worldwide safety specifications and regulations. It is unlikely that a company will know how to design magnetics for clearances required by safety agencies and approvals. The number of global approvals keeps increasing and changing – do you have the staff to keep up with compliance to them all?

Without the necessary expertise and equipment, it is time-consuming and

expensive to try to obtain safety agency approvals. Moreover, products that ship internationally will require large input ranges of voltages and operating frequencies (85-265, 47- 440Hz), and will require a long list of agency approvals, validations, and certifications for worldwide acceptance. Companies who take on these tasks in-house must be prepared for expense and delays, assuming they have the safety experts on staff who understand the regulatory requirements in the first place.

Am I prepared to do EMI-RFI testing?

Switching supplies often generate a lot of noise, and they are even nosier if not properly designed. Shipping globally requires meeting electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI) approvals. This testing can be costly – especially if you don’t pass the first time – and requires highly specialized test equipment as well as the people who know how to do the testing in an anechoic chamber or a test range.

The FCC even dictates domestic EMI-RFI compliance – and they have no patience for a poor switching power supply design.

Plus, if when shipping globally, the individual standards for each country need to be understood and complied with. Trips to the EMI lab are very expensive.

Can I design in PFC? In many countries, power factor correction is required for equipment over certain power levels. In-house power supply designs will need to have PFC installed to meet the necessary requirements.

Can I conduct environmental tests?

Do you have temperature test equipment to evaluate designs over minimum/ maximum temperature humidity extremes, high/low input voltages and min/ max output loads? What about shock and vibration? Even during transport and shipping this can be severe.

Will my design have inrush current and transient protection, Hi-pot certification etc?

Most commercial power supplies have protection against potentially harmful events. But for an in-house design, the mean time between failures (MTBF) will need to be known. Many manufactured supplies have predicted reliability as well as established reliability as they have been shipping off the shelf models to other customers in high volumes for extended periods of time and have a great deal of demonstrated MTBF data.

Do I understand the transient recovery time and stability over time and temperature?

The temperature coefficient for both current limit and voltage stability for a power supply design must be well understood.

Engineers will need to know how to design and optimize control loops in high current power supplies and systems. Additionally, continued on page 8

Understanding critical bus voltages for RS-485 transceivers provide detailed explanations of these parameters, this article tries to rectify this shortcoming. First we explain the basic operation of a transceiver, then how to derive from there the common-mode voltage term. Finally, we distinguish between recommended and maximum operating conditions.

Basic transceiver operation The Driver

A transceiver’s driver section consists of an H-bridge output stage. A logic high at data input, D, turns on transistors Q2 and Q3. This drives a current from the A to the B terminal. Logic low at D turns on Q1 and Q4 and drives a current in the opposite direction, from B to A. The internal resistances of the reverse leakage protection diodes and in combination with the transistor on-resistances form a voltage divider with the external differential load resistance, RD. This causes the line voltages VA and VB to be significantly smaller than the supply voltage, VCC (Figure 1).

The resulting, complementary line voltages, VA and VB, represent two dc-voltage levels that swing around an average dc-level that is common to both bus lines. This voltage is known as the driver commonmode output, or output offset voltage, VOS. This common-mode voltage can be expressed through, while the differential output voltage is VOD= VA-VB. Equating both equations and solving for the line voltages yields and.

Thus, the driver can be represented as a signal source with a common-mode component, VOS that is superimposed by the complementary differential components and ±VOD/2 and VOD/2. ±

Due to its robustness and high reliability, RS-485 has become the most commonly applied interface technology in noisy industrial environments worldwide.

The trend towards wider operating ranges combined with higher stand-off capabilities has produced modern transceiver designs whose performance exceeds the initial RS-485 standard (EIA/TIA-485) by far.

New transceiver specifications outlining these performance improvements in component data sheets, however, are often misunderstood by the end user – the system designer. For example, typical confusion exist when comparing a transceiver’s maximum voltage levels given in the Absolute Maximum Ratings (AMR) section with those provided under Recommended Operating Conditions (ROC).

Questions often arise such as: Will the transceiver transmit data reliably under absolute maximum rating conditions?

Why is the input voltage under ROC much smaller than the one in AMR? How is the common-mode voltage range defined?

The Receiver A transceiver’s receiver section contains a resistive voltage divider, R1 / R2, at each input, followed by a comparator.

The voltage dividers attenuate the input signals, VA and VB, by a ratio of 10:1.

This ratio determines the maximum applicable receiver input voltages at A and B. Because the voltage dividers are referenced to receiver ground, both, the common-mode and the differential voltage component are attenuated by the same ratio. The differential comparator then removes the common-mode signal and only reacts to the differential input signal, VID = VA – VB. Thus, in standard RS-485 transceivers output, R, turns high

when VID ≥ 200 mV, and low when VID < –200mV. Figure 2 shows that each receiver input has a common-mode input resistance of RCM = R1 + R2, and a differential input resistance of RIN = 2 RCM. RCM causes common-mode loading for each bus line, that is, the common-mode voltage on both lines drives current through RCM towards receiver ground. In contrast RIN causes differential load currents to flow between the bus lines.

Maximum receiver input voltage range The RS-485 standard specifies a common-mode input range from –7V to +12V and a maximum ground potential difference (GPD) between a driver and a remote receiver of ±7V. Figure 3 shows a data link example for maximum possible bus voltages. In this case the link is an unterminated point-to-point connection.

The single receiver presents light loading, allowing the line voltages to swing across the entire supply rail.

One extreme case is when the driver outputs 5V with respect to driver ground (GNDD) while the GPD = –7V. In this case the maximum positive receiver input voltage is +12V with respect to receiver ground (GNDR). The other extreme is when the driver outputs 0V with respect to GNDD while the GPD = +7V. In this case the maximum negative receiver input is –7V with respect GNDR. To ensure reliable data transfer the maximum receiver input voltage range spans from +12V to –7V. Note, the GPD is the difference between driver and receiver ground potential and represents a second common-mode voltage that adds to the driver output offset. The total common-mode voltage, VCM, for a data link is given with VCM = VOS + GPD. A further requirement of RS-485 is that a driver must be able to drive 32 unit loads over the full GPD of ±7V. A unit load represents a common-mode load and is defined as the dc input current of 1mA at a dc input voltage of 12V. This yields a dc input resistance of 12kΩ. Legacy transceivers typically have 1UL common-mode loading, while modern components often possess 1/8 UL, that is one-eighth the continued on page 16

Protocase partners with University Rover Challenge

Over the past two months, a Canadian business has been precision-fabricating components for dozens of rovers designed to operate on the surface of Mars.

In January, Protocase Inc., a global leader in custom electronic enclosures and sheet metal parts for the engineering and science communities, announced a landmark sponsorship deal with the University Rover Challenge (URC), by providing manufacturing services and design assistance to the record number of teams

participating in this year’s competition.

This year, 44 competing teams hail from eight countries on six continents, including the United States, Australia, Poland, India, and six from Canada. Their goal is to design and build next-generation rovers able to support astronauts on future human missions to Mars. These rovers will be required to conduct extensive scientific investigations, navigate arduous desert terrain, and conduct mission support roles such as servicing equipment and delivering tools to astronauts.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for teams,” says Kevin Sloan, URC director.

“As teams conceive increasingly innovative rover designs, they will need to leverage similarly novel manufacturing methods. Being able to supplement students’ in-house

production capabilities with niche, custom production from vendors like Protocase will be a huge benefit to the students and the level of technology demonstrated at URC.” Protocase’s passion for robotics began back in 2012, when the company first sponsored the All Saints High School F.I.R.S.T. Robotics Team in Kanata ON. As team mentor Paul McDonough noted at the time, “Before Protocase, the team had expended a lot of time and creative energy hand-fabricating and tweaking parts to make everything fit. Now, students have adopted 3D design and work with Protocase to have their parts fabricated with lightning speed. The team now has more time for designing and testing.”

Digi-Key hosts FIRST robotics challenge Advocates high school-level competitive engineering events Electronic component distribution leader Digi-Key Corp., has sponsored a regional kick-off event for high school students planning to participate in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics’ 2015 Global Challenge. In conjunction with a global unveiling of the contest hosted by inventor Dean Kamen, Digi-Key invited several regional high schools to its headquarters last Saturday for a presentation by one of Digi-Key’s executive vice presidents and to receive their kit for this year’s challenge.

With growing interest around the world in innovation and engineering, over 75,000 high school students, comprising nearly 3,000 teams, have signed up to participate in this year’s FIRST Robotics challenge. Participation is up nearly 40% over the past two years with an increase from 51,000 student competitors in 2013 to 70,000 in 2014.

“It’s so exciting to see how a passion in engineering is so quickly emerging at the high school level,” adds Dave Doherty, EVP of operations for Digi-Key. “Thanks to FIRST, now students have a chance to participate in a friendly and challenging tournament, competing with their intellect and

intelligence. It may not have the popularity of athletics just yet, but it’s headed in that direction and we’re proud to be a part of promoting STEM activities such as the ‘sport’ of robotics at the high school level.”

As part of the kick-off, the teams, grades 9-12, were introduced to the 2015 robotics game field and challenge and received an exciting new Kit of Parts made up of motors, batteries, a control system, a PC, pneumatic components, and a mix of automation components ñ with no instructions.

The theme of the 2015 robotics competition is “RECYCLE RUSH”. RECYCLE RUSH is a recycling-themed game played by two Alliances of three robots each. Robots score points by stacking totes on scoring platforms, capping those stacks with recycling containers, and properly disposing of pool noodles, representing litter. In keeping with the recycling theme of the game, all game pieces used are reusable or recyclable by teams in their home locations or by FIRST at the end of the season.

Teams will have six weeks to design, build, program and test their robot to meet this year’s engineering challenge. Student competitions will be held at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, April 22-25.

legacy input current, or an eight times higher input resistance to ground. To test for maximum common-mode loading, the test circuit in Figure 4 is commonly used.

Here the 60Ω differential resistance represents the two 120 termination resistors at each bus end. The 375Ω resistors resemble the resistance of 32 unit loads, which could be 32 x 1UL transceivers or 256 x 1/8 UL transceivers. The symmetrical GPD of ±7V is replaced by a test voltage ranging from –7V to +12V to test for symmetrical receiver input performance.

For example, if the driver is capable of providing the full supply range at its outputs, with a 5V output and VTEST = –7V, the receiver input voltage would be +12V with respect to receiver ground. For a 0V output and VTEST = +12V, the receiver input would be –12V measured against

receiver ground.

The minimum and maximum transceiver input voltages are specified with –12V and +12V, respectively. Because within this voltage range reliable data transmission must be assured, these values are specified under Recommended Operating Conditions (ROC).

Note that these recommended maxima assume a maximum driver output range of 0V to 5V. The actual common-mode voltage range is much smaller. For a 5V transceiver, VCM+ calculates to VCM = 2.5V +7V = +9.5V and VCM– = 2.5V – 12V = –9.5V.

Absolute maximum ratings

In applications where RS-485 data lines run parallel to 24Vdc power lines, safety features must be implemented into the transceiver design to prevent the device from damage if a short circuit fault occurs between the power and data lines due to broken cable insulation, for example.

A common solution is the utilization of highvoltage transistors in the driver output stage that provides sufficient standoff against short high-voltage transients as well as long lasting overvoltage potentials. External transient voltage suppressors (TVS) that could prevent the transceiver from 24V damage are not accepted. Instead, any TVS components used must protect the 24V supply first.

Unfortunately, the 24V is a nominal value and many supply systems can show variations of up to 35V. This increases the necessary TVS breakdown voltage to some 36V. TVS diodes with such high breakdown typically provide clamping voltages of up to 60V. In order to withstand these high transients voltages, transceivers must provide standoff voltage of more than 65V to 70V. These voltage standoff voltage levels are specified under Absolute Maximum Ratings. Any higher voltage levels will trigger the transceiver’s internal electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection circuits.

How to survive hostile control environments

Body armor for switches circuit breakers You have two possible problems when you make a hole in an enclosure to mount/fix anything (could even be as simple as a mounting bracket): contaminants could seep into the enclosure, damaging internal electrical and mechanical parts and/or collect on the outside and eventually prevent equipment operation.

It is important, therefore, that two tasks be accomplished: seal the hole and protect what is outside.

Exposure to moisture, ice, dust, dirt, fungus, lubricants, cleaning solvents, food, salt air and other materials that can corrode or bind up mechanical devices, will eventually lead to damage of the internal workings of the product and/or cause external parts to become difficult to operate or become fully non-functional. Electromechanical toggle, pushbutton and rotary switches are often the preferred choice for equipment control. They provide good tactile feedback and minimize accidental actuation. Cost is reasonable and the result is a rugged, easy-to use and repair control. Circuit breakers accessible from outside the enclosure allow immediate troubleshooting and fast corrective action.

However, unsealed, electromechanical switches and circuit breakers, mounted through an enclosure, offer limited environmental protection against harsh contaminant penetration. These devices might be on an oil platform, a cement truck, a speeding train, a robot, a commercial floor cleaner, a racing snowmobile, or any of the myriad of products subject to attack by man or Mother Nature. Sealed switches are available, though their cost is relatively high.

However, they are not without certain problems.

Many sealed switches come with no effective sealing of the mounting hole.

Plus, if the equipment will be exposed to dirt, food residue or icing, the external switch operator may get jammed or frozen. The internals of the switch will not be damaged, but you may not be able to operate the switch. What is the solution?

was made painfully aware of these types of control device reliability issues, and, shortly thereafter, a seal company joined forces with the Department of Defense to develop a series of switch sealing accessories, which led to the creation of the military standard MIL-DTL-5423, which is still being used today.

These switch accessories, commonly called ‘boots’ or ‘caps’, comprised a threaded piece, to which was molded a form-fitting, elastomeric cover (silicone rubber was the standard sealing material). The ‘boot’ included a rib molded under the nut to seal the mounting hole.

The result was a cost effective sealing of the switch and mounting hole, with a life expectancy of over 25 years and over 50,000 operations and that could easily withstand temperatures from -70C (-94F) to plus +204C (+400F). See Figure 1 for a typical high quality design.

Over the past 65 plus years, the range of sealing boots has expanded to include not only bushing mounted toggle switches, but also pushbutton and rocker switches, bushing-mounted rotary devices (potentiometers, selector switches, etc.), panel-mounted circuit breakers, as well as a multitude of custom engineered solutions.

Specifying sealing boots The sealing boot should be specified at the same time as the switch or breaker is being selected. This will insure proper fit and operation. Look for a distribu-

tor who offers both the switch/breaker and the corresponding boot. They can easily match the two devices.

Export In today’s ‘flat’ world, the equipment must meet international specifications.

This not only includes the enclosure rating per IEC 60529 (e.g. IP66 for equipment subject to wash downs), but also material restrictions specified in legislation like RoHS and REACH. Be sure that the boot is in compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements for the end use countries.

Dimensions and thread size(s) If the switch/ breaker has already been selected and you need a boot, the easiest solution is to contact a reputable boot manufacturer. They have had years of experience matching the boot to the right switch or breaker. Provide the manufacturer and catalog number or a cut sheet.

Also, the boot manufacturer’s website should have boot cross references to most popular switches and breakers.

Sealed switches As mentioned earlier, sealed switches are becoming popular. They seal the internal workings of the switch from entry by liquid or solid particles. However, they do not inherently seal the mounting hole and are still subject to mechanical problems when exposed to elements that can solidify over the switch (ice, cement or coal dust, airborne food residue, etc.). If the exposure is mostly to liquids, a high performance bushing seal is available that consists of a stainless steel ring and a silicone rubber molded seal that will positively seal the switch mounting hole. See Figure 2.

If the equipment is also exposed to the above elements that could jam the switch operator, consideration should be given to using a half boot that will seal the mounting hole and shrug off ice and jamming particles like a winter wiper blade repels ice and snow.

Sealing hardware

After sealing the electrical components, don’t neglect to seal any other items that may be attached to the control box and/or the process equipment. As a compliment to the sealing boots, a line of sealing hardware has been developed that offers self-sealing screws, nuts, bolts and washers. All use stainless steel base hardware and silicone rubber seals. There is no need for application of sealing paste or tape and the seal is far superior to any other solution. See Figure 3.

Electronic OEMs taking steps to lessen impact on environment According to Design for Environment report from the Electronics Product Stewardship Canada (EPSC)

The Design for Environment report released by the Electronics Product Stewardship Canada (EPSC) explores the progress electronics manufacturers have made in Canada on the three R’s waste hierarchy: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

The electronics sector has made a shift to more mobile, multi-functional and light

weight products. This past year more and more electronics products have been freed from cables and plugs and become mobile.

This trend has made a positive impact on the increased ability for today’s electronics to be reused and refurbished. The Waste Hierarchy 3 R’s of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle are being well maintained, in that order, by the leading electronics brands.

Canadians consistently support programs to improve the environment and make the time to return unwanted electronics for proper reuse and recycling.

These actions by Canadians, along with governments, electronics manufacturers and retailers are making a positive difference both to our environment and the design of new products. This year’s Design for Environment Report provides an overview of design improvements resulting in decreased use of resources including elimination of many materials of concern, improvements to conserve energy, and reductions in our overall carbon footprint.

With the demand for multi-function products increasing, companies are designing devices with multiple applications. One product can now perform the functions of what once took many devices.

One of the most high profile examples is the phablet. This category generally refers to smartphones with screens over 5-inches but smaller than a 10-inch tablet computer. multi-functional products, and market changes are expected to continue.

Requires far less materials Advances in technology have allowed for a dramatic reduction in the weight of electronics and the types of materials used. Not long ago, users needed a server on their desk to power a personal computer. The workings of a computer are so small today that they can be built around the display itself. The engine of the Personal Computer – the Central Processing Unit (CPU), Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), and Random Access Memory (RAM) are now small enough to be carried around with us in our mobile devices. By reducing the size of the microprocessors contained in our electronic devices, manufacturers are able to produce products that weigh less, generate less heat and increase the size of memory on small devices.

Design for energy efficiency Electronics manufacturers are responding to consumer demand and government standards for energy efficient products.

This design decision has been observed particularly in televisions, one of the largest sources of power usage. Today’s LCD flat-screen televisions use 63% less energy than ten years ago.17 Additionally, computer energy efficiency has doubled every 1.57 years – and is expected to continue at this pace for the foreseeable future.

Packaging, shipping innovations Electronics producers have made great improvements in packaging design on many fronts including: use of sustainable materials, reductions in volume of material required and safety of products while in transit. Electronics manufacturers are striving to conserve resources by using recycled materials in packaging.

Design changes that influence reuse The electronics reuse and refurbishing industry is a thriving, growing and sustainable business. It is focused on computers of about three years of age and floor standing copiers, printers and multifunctional devices from the commercial sector. Smart phones, tablets and mobile devices of all kinds are also increasingly being refurbished, powering growth in reuse. There are many successful companies across Canada refurbishing and reselling most brands of consumer electronics, information technology, and telecommunication products and parts.

These are the manufacturers themselves as well as sophisticated operations that provide after sales services to electronics companies. These operations refurbish products back to the original manufacturer specifications, which is critical from both a safety and quality perspective.

Alternate materials use Industry leaders voluntarily strive to develop the best sustainable alternatives for the environment as soon as viable, cost-effective solutions are available. The use of potentially hazardous substances is in decline in Canada through voluntary manufacturer phase outs as alternatives become available.

The European Commission notified the World Trade Organization (WTO) that it has added four additional substances to the EU RoHS Directive (2011/65/EU). This was processed as a Delegated Directive amending Annex II (list of restricted substances) of the RoHS Directive.

Article 6(3) of the Directive requires the European Commission to periodically review and update the list of restricted substances. The review of potential substances for restriction has been underway for the past two years and culminates with publication of the Delegated Directive in the Official Journal of the European Union - which is expected in March 2015.

Four phthalate substances will be added to the RoHS substance restrictions (see table below). Phthalates are primarily used as plasticizers in plastics, particularly in PVC plastic which is commonly used for wires and cables but can also be found on some electronic components or other plastic parts. The four phthalates are already listed on the REACH SVHC Candidate List – this gives manufacturers that have REACH SVHC information from their suppliers a head start in assessing†the parts and materials that require substitution. However, the different basis for calculating concentration level†between REACH and RoHS (article vs. homogeneous material) will undoubtedly create some surprises.

The high airflow fan tray delivers redundant power and is available with up to six-fan positions. Ideal for narrow depth cabinets found in security, audio and A/V applications, product combines small size (1U high) with reliable performance and high airflows of up to 160CFM. Product can be ordered with an additional universal 90-264Vac input external power supply or used with a switching 12Vdc rail as a redundant power source.

GPL 105 series laser diode module system is suitable for general purpose, medium-duty applications, such as education, light assembly and simple alignment jobs. System includes a 3/8” NPT-threaded housing with mounting hardware and a plug-in USB-type power supply. Cable connector length is 36” and available patterns are red dot or line with a nominal focal length of 17”.
