Incubators & accelerators help launch tech start-ups Starting a company has never been easy. Not having to worry about market research and resources can be the difference between getting off the ground and moving back in with your parents. This might explain the record number of startup accelerators and incubators available to Canadians today. Depending on your actual definition of an incubator (or accelerator) there are currently more than 100 that position themselves as either national or provincially based.

Despite the continuing shrinkage of industry giants such as BlackBerry (nee RIM) and no obvious successor in place, Canada’s electronics design community remains vibrant on the backs of some highly technical and seriously vertical silos dotting this nation’s tech landscape. These small, but tenacious clusters of brain trust struggle to gather the necessary financial support to gain national or global acceptance of their fresh designs.

According to the National Research Council Canada (NRC), accelerators are typically for-profit organizations, owned and operated by venture capital investors who intend to generate returns from equity-based investments in their client firms. Accelerators provide a range of services to early-stage firms, including financial support, business advice, office and development space and complementary services offered by partner organizations.

Incubators are typically not-for-profit organizations that offer similar services to accelerators but tend to provide longer tenure for participating firms and a broader suite of services in terms of physical space and mentorship. Incubators are often sponsored by universities, colleges or economic development corporations. Overall goal

is generally the same, as both aim to increase the odds of building a successful business in exchange for a small chunk of equity.

One of the positive effects of tech accelerators has been their role in rapidly globalizing the startup community by removing the barriers to entry and providing access to capital for young companies that do not have the benefit of being headquartered in a major tech centre.

Although there are now more accelerators and incubators than ever, the total size of their portfolios appears to have leveled off. Analysts speculate that the proliferation of accelerators has reached a tipping point where there are now not enough quality founders and startups to justify continuing to expand their portfolios. There is little doubt that accelerators give opportunities to companies that may not otherwise have access to the expertise needed to grow a business from an idea to a product or service.

The accelerator and incubator craze is such a new trend in venture investing, that it’s difficult to compare the success of these programs to that of later stage venture capital firms. While the first few accelerators have already recorded acquisitions and even a few IPOs, the large majority of accelerated startups are still in relative infancy. Like a baby learning to walk before it runs, pristine tech firms require a level ground and positive environment to succeed.

Digi-Key launches in-stock BOM manager online

Reversing the usual trend of international expansion plans between the US and Canada, I.C.T. Power Company Inc. and Innovation Plus Power Systems of Burlington ON have undergone extensive expansion of their respective footprints on US soil this year.

“It’s not very often in the industrial power industry realm do you hear of a Canadian company expanding into the United States, let alone two companies,” says the founder and president of both firms Afshin Montazeri.

Global electronic components distributor Digi-Key Corp., Thief River Falls MN, has surpassed one-million in-stock components available for immediate shipment, accessible via the firm’s improved Bill of Materials (BOM) manager.

The firm also launched a Scheduled Shipments feature and Shopping Cart enhancements, as well as additional global website improvements designed to accelerate information access and simplify the ordering process.

A new online directory, launched by the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), will help companies identify, locate and connect with research expertise and cutting-edge facilities at universities, colleges and research hospitals across the country.

A first of its kind, the CFI Research Facilities Navigator (http://www. innovation.ca/en/navigator) is an easy-to-use search tool geared to businesses looking to establish research collaborations that will help them innovate. “Our country’s long-term economic prosperity depends on innovative companies with cutting-edge technology that create high-quality jobs and help improve our standard of living,” says Greg Rickford, Minister of State (Science and Technology). “This new online resource is yet another example of how our government is encouraging collaboration among the academic, public and private partners to drive innovation into every sector of our economy.”

Vancouver-based EMS provider Canada Brio Technologies’ facility in Beijing, China has received TS 16949 certification.

“Achieving TS 16949 certification validates our efforts to move further into the automobile sector of manufacturing,” says Canada Brio’s general manager, Jack Tan. Brio Technology has been producing automobile products for Pioneer out of its Shanghai facility since 2002 and has been servicing the North American market since 2005.

Allied signs disty deal with Rittal Allied Electronics, Fort Worth TX, has signed a distribution agreement with Rittal Corp., a leading global manufacturer of enclosures and climate control products. Cisco plans tech sector job creation initiatives Cisco Canada president Nitin Kawale and Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne reached an agreement that aims to significantly accelerate the Province’s status as a leader in technology innovation and key player in the global research and development landscape.

Via the 10-year agreement, Cisco aims to add up to 1,700 high tech jobs with a focus on R&D within the first six years. Innovation, service, acquisitions lead to success for Richmond’s Sohail Kamal West Coast Norsat International Correspondent

Founded in Whitehorse in 1977, and now based in Richmond BC, Norsat International Inc. has emerged to become a leading provider of innovative communication solutions that enable the transmission of data, audio and video for remote and challenging applications.

I recently had the opportunity to interview Norsat’s president & CEO, Dr. Amiee Chan, who was appointed CEO in 2006, and has since received numerous awards for her role as a leader and engineer. “As a result of a recent acquisition, we have acquired these block up-converters (BUCs) and solid state power amplifiers (SSPAs) along with other inventory, capital assets, IP and product extensions,” Dr.Chan explains. “These product extensions have provided us with many other new large projects and customers which will become a major focus in the coming year.”

Q: Any particular acquisition that helped your recent successes?

“Our acquisition of Sinclair Technologies in 2011 has been a contributing factor,” says Dr. Chan. The $18.5M acquisition of Sinclair Technologies, a leading provider of antennas and radio frequency (RF) conditioning products was a great fit for Norsat, as it complemented its core business and supports the firm’s goal of becoming a premium provider of communication solutions for remote and challenging applications.

“Just like Norsat, Sinclair products are able to operate in the harshest environments and are used all over the world. For example, Sinclair antennas are used by the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) on many of their trains and buses. Every vehicle has to communicate back to operations and they rely on Sinclair’s products for these key communications”.

By Phoenix Contact Modular machine design is on the rise.

Users are demanding more from products along the entire process chain right up to the last component. Mechanical engineers base their strategic design decisions on their customers’ production requirements. This trend is known as Lean Product Design. The market is moving away from fully automated, complete production systems toward smaller production cells having standardized functional modules. Component manufacturers are also falling in line with this trend. The impact on terminal blocks is a need for time saving, for more flexibility and ultimately for an efficient system.

Short wiring time This is not to say that lean product design means poorer quality or reduced availability. It simply describes a way to standardize predefined functional modules to meet customer demands. The production designs stipulate that the systems should be lean, cost-effective, and individually configurable.

Although the tried-and-tested screw connection technology still dominates the global market, spring connection

technologies have also started gaining ground. Terminal blocks with push-in technology use compression springs to press the conductor against the live copper rail, thus forming an electrical connection (Figure 1).

Installers find this technology particularly useful. No tools are required for wiring, since the wire with ferrule is connected to the contact point directly.

Although rigid or single-wire conductors are standard in building engineering, this is not the case in mechanical engineering. Previously, only thick, rigid conductors did the job, but now thin sensor cables are also used. Phoenix Contact’s terminal blocks with push-in technology (PT) are in line with these requirements.

The innovative connection technology is much easier to use, reducing the required insertion force by 50%. Conductors with cross sections beginning at 26AWG can thus be wired without the need for tools.

Flexibility Wiring without tools is also particularly useful in cramped, hard-to-access areas. Electricians at the end of the process chain can even work with one hand: forming a connection is as easy as grasping the conductor and plugging it in. Wiring work is thus made simpler and more ergonomic, leading to reduced wiring time and fatigue (Figure 2).

The wide variety of manufacturer-specific connection technologies used in all kinds of terminals, relays, and control units makes installers’ daily work more difficult. There is no standard way to position conductors and working tools in the components. Faulty wiring is often the result, which, in turn may lead to system failures and even pose safety hazards.

Operation and conductor insertion are optically and physically separated, thus ruling out any possibility of positioning the conductor incorrectly (figure 3).

Safety factor Full insulation also increases operational safety. Working on live systems contravenes both norms and accident prevention regulations, but it still occurs in real life. It is not uncommon to perform measurement and test procedures or to rewire during live operation.

The push-in technology actuation button provides secure contact protection with insulation to separate the internal contact elements reliably. Therefore, it is not possible to come in contact with live parts.

Space saving The signal and control wiring in the lower power range plays a key role in the system wiring. Machine functions are becoming ever more complex and there is less space for the increasing signal density. At Phoenix Contact, terminal block family with a 3.5mm pitch and push-in technology has been developed specifically for these applications. In practice, wiring in the lower power range typically uses conductors with cross sections between 16 and 24AWG (figure 4).

Filter connectors are a misunderstood product for many components engineers today. The lack of understanding is the result of the fact, that filter connectors are seldom on the ‘what’s new’ headlines and because most engineers don’t think they need them - until they get to the EMC phase of testing. For those who do, they will be glad that they are available.

Filter connectors are a tool in the world of ElectroMagnetic Compatibility (EMC). Therefore, only those designers who’s responsibility falls in EMC, will have need for this potential problem solver. Back when the problem was called EMI, because interference was the big issue, some of you might remember

methods: shielding, filtering, and most importantly minimizing the energy and frequency spectrum that needs to be contained.

has evolved, which helps circuit designers minimize their need for filtering and shielding, by careful design and layout of the components in their circuits. But, ultimately, all final designs will utilize all three methods.

Filtering simply means the control of the frequencies, the energy that they contain, and limiting where they go.

Components that are frequency sensitive are capacitors and inductors. It’s easy to see, that filter connectors, will integrate capacitors, inductors, or both, inside a connector. Most often, the connectors of interest are the input/output connectors, since those are not only the transition from the device to the outside world, but by their nature, they are also the ‘antennae’ for concerning frequencies - both coming and going.

As a result, the most popular and most filtered types of connectors, are D-subminiature and their related families (which actually originated in MILC-24308), several circular types like MIL-DTL-38999, MIL-DTL-83723 and aviation industry specific ones like the ARINC 404 and 600 connectors. Typically, such use is for professional equipment, not consumer products.

The capacitor is the primary filter component, typically of a special construction that lends itself to fitting into the tight confines of a multli-pin connector. One lead is connected to a contact, the other to ground. The ground ultimately is connected to the shell and the device enclosure. While some filter connectors use simple ‘chip caps’ mounted on a substrate configured for the contact layout, the higher performance filter connectors use either tubular ceramic capacitors, or planar ceramic arrays. The very high end filter connectors contain multiple capacitors and ferrites to create a Pi type of filter.

Filter performance can range from a few dB (ferrites, chip caps) of attenuation, to 60 or more dB. when used in Pi or higher order filtering, in a properly shielded and grounded connector design.

No exception here – you get what you pay for.

The key to a successful design, is to only pay for what you NEED. Understanding and defining your needs is the critical first step. Then choosing the methods available to meet the spec, and effective implementation, will provide a cost effective end product.

So what makes the use of filter connectors desirable? If you have to use just one word, it’s performance. They work.

Key reasons why they offer advantages: 1) Filter performance far exceeds comparable filters placed elsewhere in the circuit. There’s a lengthy engineering explanation of why, but a 60dB. Filter inside a connector, might only provide 15 to 30dB if placed somewhere on the printed circuit board behind the connector. While not all designs need 60dB, some modern electronics do, and thus sometimes a filtered connector is the only EMC choice.

VESA begins development of microDisplayPort connector standard Responding to the growth of portable and ultra-thin computing devices, the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) says that it is defining a microDisplayPort connector standard. Designed to be physically smaller than VESA’s existing DisplayPort and mini-DisplayPort connectors, the new micro-DisplayPort connector will target smartphones, tablets, ultra-thin notebooks and other mobile systems that require an extremely compact connector to drive external video displays.

Some believe, the use of filter connectors indicates that other aspects of the EMC design process have failed. While true in theory, not all designs, not all markets, have the ability to fully utilize only the alternatives. There always will be many high performance, highly critical applications that simply need the best, need to choose what is known to work, and do not have the development time and cost to avoid use of a filter connector. Price has typically been a perceived downfall of filter connectors, but that must be balanced against the cost of avoidance, which is seldom trivial.

Filter connectors have a broad range of performance and prices. The most popular higher volume, commercial filtered D-subs, start in the $3.50 range and up.

Deliveries can range from stock, to only 6-weeks. At the other end of the spectrum, special aviation types, like ARINC 600 can be $1,000, or more, and take 18 weeks. Optoelectronics & Displays Tablets propel LCD panel growth Tablets are singlehandedly driving the global market for large-sized liquid-crystal display (LCD) panels during the first nine months of the year, mitigating the losses from most other sectors of the LCD space, according to a report from IHS Inc., El Segundo CA. Worldwide LCD shipments for tablet panels in the first three quarters of 2013 amounted to 186.6 million units, up a remarkable 94% from 96.2 million during the same threequarter period last year. As the most vigorous segment of the four major applications for LCD panels, tablets are working alongside a modestly growing TV panel space to make up for large declines in desktop PC monitors and notebooks, the two weakest LCD sectors.

The great gains made by tablet LCD panel shipments this year explain why total LCD panel shipments for the first three quarters are up 8% to 628.3 million units, a respectable increase from 581.2 million units for the same time last year.

LCD panel shipments for the TV sector were also up from January to the end of September, reaching 172.2 million units, or a 4 percent rise from 165.6 million last year. However, given the declining LCD-TV market this year, IHS expects panel shipments for televisions to end the year basically unchanged compared to 2012, in light of weak results expected in the fourth quarter.

The PRS212x modules take advantage of the Peraso PRS1021 60GHz transceiver IC, which integrates more than 15 discrete devices, and are compliant with the single carrier modulation and coding schemes of the IEEE 802.11ad-2012 specification. The specification focuses on the highly promoted 60GHz band, recently endorsed by the FCC in its August 2013 ruling, to avoid the interference problems seen in the traditional and congested wireless bands such as 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.
