Lazaridis envisions Waterloo as future ‘Quantum Valley’ The official unveiling of the Mike & Ophelia Quantum Nano Centre (QNC) in the heart of the University of Waterloo clearly represents a paradigm shift in the advancement of technology in the coming decades, according to Mike Lazaridis, co-founder and vice-chairman of Research In Motion.

Lazaridis, who was assisted in the ribbon cutting ceremony by his wife Ophelia and famous British theoretical physicist Prof.

Stephen Hawking, says the educational facility stands to become the Bell Labs of the 21st century. Bell Labs a hive of technological innovation in the early 1960s and laid the groundwork for the success of Silicon Valley.

The 285,000-sq.-ft. building will be shared by the Institute of Quantum Computing and the Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology, each of which will occupy separate halves of the facility. Representing ‘the sum of its people’, the QNC has been specifically designed to encourage collaboration between all scientific disciplines.

“There are many institutes of nanotechnology around the world and similarly institutes for quantum computing,” says university president Feridun Hamdullahpur. “They exist in other parts of the world. But to put the two of them together — this is the first of its kind. It doesn’t exist anywhere else in the world.”

The state-of-the-art building that cost $160-million, has been built to the demanding standards needed for atomic-scale experiments. That includes precise controls for vibration, electromagnetic interference and temperature. It also makes it the most expensive structure at the university and in this country.

“I predict, the discoveries and innovations of the QNC lead to the creation of companies that will lead to Waterloo Region becoming known as The Quantum Valley,” says Lararidis, who generously donated more than $100-million to the project.

Lazaridis, meanwhile, describes the potential applications as “mind-boggling,” citing future developments like “drugs that are targeted at individual cells” and both self-healing and invisible metals. Lazaridis is confident that the detail and precision designed into the facility will be enough to lure the brightest minds in the field to Canada, from academic leaders to student brain trust.

“We can’t offer them ocean, beaches or mountains, but we can try and offer them the best environment, the best collaborators, the best equipment that would be conducive to them making the breakthroughs of their lifetime,” Lazaridis said. “One of the best ways to describe this is we’re trying to break the known laws of physics.”

“It’s clear to me that this place is special,” Stephen Hawking said during the opening ceremony. “This institution will advance our understanding of matter and movement, illuminating deep mysteries with the light of scientific discovery.”

Spawned by imaginative energy and collaborative dreams along with the phenomenal philanthropy of Lazaridis, the future of the Waterloo Region clearly indicates that thinking small is big - and better.

“This remarkable new building, unique in the world, will add tremendous new capacity to the University of Waterloo’s global impact in research and discovery,” says Feridun Hamdullahpur, president and vice-chancellor, University of Waterloo. “This is a state-of-the-art research facility where scientists and students from many disciplines will work together towards the next big breakthroughs in science and technology.”

“Just as the discoveries and innovations at The Bell Labs led to the companies that created Silicon Valley, so will, I predict, the discoveries and innovations of the Quantum-Nano Centre lead to the creation of companies that will lead to Waterloo Region becoming known as The Quantum Valley,” said Mike Lazaridis, whose generous donation of more than $100 million to the project has supported the Centre’s creation.

Since 1999, Mr. Lazaridis’ philanthropy and fund-raising efforts have netted more than $600 million towards this vision, including funding for IQC, WIN, QNC and the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics.

“This remarkable facility will give Waterloo scientists the cutting-edge tools and collaborative environment needed to make revolutionary breakthroughs in quantum information and nanotechnology,” adds Raymond Laflamme, executive director of the Institute for Quantum Computing. “By harnessing the quantum properties of the nano-scale world, researchers will pioneer new technologies that will change the ways we work, communicate, play and live.”

The $160 million building meets the most stringent standards for quantum-scale experiments — precise controls for vibration and temperature, for example — and features a large, six-storey central atrium at the heart of the building surrounded by flexible spaces to encourage interaction and collaboration.

“Quantum devices of the future will be built with nano materials, and will be enabled by nanotechnology, making nanotechnology the bridge to quantum,” says Arthur Carty, Executive Director of the Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology.

Murata unveils ‘smallest’ monolithic ceramic capacitor Japan-based Murata Manufacturing is heralding what it calls the world’s smallest 0201 (0.25 mm x 0.125 mm) monolithic ceramic capacitor. The volume of the new device is approximately 25% of the 0402 sized device (0.4 mm x 0.2 mm), the predominant component used in mainstream electronic design.

Monolithic ceramic capacitors are assembled into all kinds of electronic devices and it is said that 400 to 500 of them are used in the latest smartphones. The number of electronic components used in compact mobile devices continues to increase to enable an increasingly greater number of features. The growth in size of mobile devices is not proportional to the increase in number of features, which means that volumetric efficiency is a key factor in product design. This is driving a growing need for ultra-small components that can support high-density mounting.

Industry golf tourney ‘chips’ in for charity Electronics manufacturing professionals and members of the surface mount electronic industry gathered recently in Bolton ON for the 16th Annual Electronics Manufacturing Industry and Friend Charity Golf Tournament.

The event saw a substantial increase in the number of golfers, managing to raise funds for the Shining Through Centre, an organization dedicated to educating children with autism. The cost of running the centre is extremely high and as a result they rely on fund raising efforts as a vital component of their continued success. All proceeds raised from the event will be sent directly to Shinning Through.

A powerful concern in medical device design

When you consider that a power supply is essential to electronics, it is amazing that so many designers wait until the end of the design process to design-in their power source. This is especially amazing today given that so much can be gained in system performance and efficiency, regardless the core technology or end product, by properly integrating the power supply into it.

This oversight is not peculiar to any type of engineer or product design, but not properly considering the power requirements early on is damaging to your development effort no matter the level of technology involved.

The advantages achieved by considering the integration of the power system into a design ahead of time at the board level is pretty obvious, as last-minute changes can be catastrophically expensive. That still doesn’t mean that every engineer will do so, and even those that do may not consider all factors, such as getting rid of device operating heat or ensuring maximum use of available board space.

At larger scales the issues do not go away simply because one can use an external power supply. The power supply’s performance and efficiency are still critical factors, as is the interface between the supply and device. Just because the power supply is external doesn’t mean it is immune from size and shape considerations, either. Regulatory approvals and otherenvironment (from moisture to altitude) performance are important as well. This is especially critical to medical device creators working on battery-driven or remotely-powered devices where every facet of the power system must be compliant.

The important thing to remember is that taking your product’s power supply into consideration at the beginning of the design process will pay off tremendous dividends in development time and device performance. In addition, getting the power supply vendor involved early ensures the solution will meet all the latest agency requirements, avoiding delays at later stages of development that can kill or significantly increase the cost of a product.

DIFFERENCES in voltage testers

Walk onto any job site where electricians are working, and you’ll probably see some voltage testers. These handy devices—which often fit in a shirt or pants pocket—are popular because they quickly give an indication of voltage presence. That makes them very useful for general voltage checks, and therefore very popular with electricians. Yet, these devices are not all the same. The differences show up in safety, reliability and convenience.

If you were to look at all the voltage testers on the market and note their differences, you’d quickly see they divide into two general categories: solenoid-based testers and electronic testers. Solenoidbased testers have a long tradition—they were the first voltage testers available and are still widely in use today. When voltage passes some threshold, the tester will indicate a voltage is present. Below that threshold, the tester won’t indicate a voltage at all.

The thresholds are markedly different between the two categories of testers—and that fact carries important implications for safety and convenience. Let’s compare voltage testers in these two categories more closely, so you can draw your own conclusions about what to have in your toolbox—or what to carry in your pocket.

Solenoid-based voltage testers These devices operate on solenoid principles. A solenoid depends on the movement of a ferrite core referred to as the slug in response to the energization and de-energization of an electromagnetic coil. The indication function of these testers depends on a spring, which drives a mechanical pointer. The spring restrains the slug— which slides to one end of its chamber or the other, depending on whether the coil has enough energy to cause the slug to overcome the opposing force of the spring. The amount of energy required restricts the sensitivity of solenoid-based testers.

Most solenoid testers have the ability to measure voltages up to 480 V or more. Having the ability to measure higher voltages limits the capability to detect voltages below about 100 V due to the poor dynamic range of the magnetics, an unfortunate weakness of solenoid testers. Try using one on 24 V or 48 V control circuits, and you may as well be using a stick of wood.

An important concern with solenoid-based testers is their relatively low input impedance —10 kilohms at the upper end, but often as low as 1 kilohm. Applying Ohm’s Law, you can see solenoid-based testers can easily make their presence felt in a circuit as loads – and subsequently interfere with the operation of that

circuit. The relatively high current draw of solenoidbased testers means significantly more heat—enough that the testers can quickly overheat, even to the point of damaging the tester if the voltage is measured a little too long.

In fact, you must allow for cooldowns (on the order of half a minute) as you take readings with solenoidbased testers. If your programmable logic controller (PLC) goes down and the plant manager is screaming about production being lost forever, you’re at the mercy of this limitation. Even receptacle testing can become dicey. Of course, you could carry around half a dozen types of testers and rotate them in and out of service—but that defeats one of the reasons for using a small tester to begin with.

Solenoid-based testers are generally unable to comply to IEC 61010 due to excessive current draw, poor dielectric withstand performance and impulse destruction due to transients originating from the mains. This is one reason many companies forbid the use of voltage testers in general on anything but 24 V control circuits and some forbid them altogether. In a moment, we’ll look at reasons to reconsider those restrictions, at least for category rated electronic voltage testers.

This high current in solenoid- based testers has another downside. Applying Ohm’s Law to the low impedance solenoid-based tester shows that you can easily carry a lethal current through the tester. Wearing insulated gloves can reduce the shock hazard, but, you’ll also be risking an arc hazard each and every time. Yes, there are riskier things you can do than use a solenoid-based tester. But, there are also safer things you can do—such as using an electronic voltage tester, instead.

Electronic voltage testers The first noticeable advantage of electronic voltage testers is their rugged, compact design relative to their old-technology counterparts. Thus, they are easier to carry around and less likely to break. But, these advantages pale beside the significant safety advantages that come from the far higher input impedance of electronic voltage testers. Some of these have an input impedance of one megohm—about 100 times that of the best solenoid-based testers.

Even at the low end, you’re looking at 20 kilohms for an electronic voltage tester- still twice as good as the best solenoid-based testers. Simply apply Ohm’s Law, and the advantages become clear. You’re going to be dealing with far less input current. That means more safety. It also means less time—if any—waiting for the instrument to cool between readings. They work at lower voltages, and typically carry an IEC

Category rating – and allow you to troubleshoot a wider range of problems, safer and faster.

This higher impedance has a downside: an electronic tester might indicate voltage on a non-energized conductor (e.g. ghost voltages). This can happen when one conductor induces a voltage in another conductor parallel to it. This voltage indication can be a disadvantage by showing a false positive. Then again, it can work to your advantage. For one thing, it won’t lull you into a false sense of safety that an energized conductor is de-energized. Suppose the solenoid- based tester doesn’t show you the 80V sitting on that energized wire, and you grab it -- what then?

Differences occur not just in the testers themselves. Nor is the solenoid vs. electronic issue the only one to resolve. Several other considerations are important for your safety and job performance. One mistake people make with test equipment is trying to save a buck on leads and probes. This can be a very expensive ‘cost-savings.’ Cheap and poorly constructed input accessories are prone to failure of the materials that are supposed to protect you. Remember that you usually hold accessories in your hand while conducting measurements. If a failure occurs, the result could be extremely hazardous to you.

It is important to maintain quality throughout you measurement tool kit. Choose accessories that are suitable for industrial work, then keep an eye on them for abrasions and other damage that eventually occur with use. This way, you’ll never have to worry about the failure of a test lead or probe—or the consequences thereof. Look for the IEC rating (e.g., CAT II, CAT III or CAT IV) on your tester, and buy leads and other accessories that meet or exceed that rating.

Additional features can make your tester a bit more useful. However, these may add weight and cost. If these features are important to you, then consider them when buying a voltage tester.

Using social media for product application YouTube videos demonstrate

use of test equipment

Today’s test and measurement equipment provides a wealth of features, which allows engineers to perform extensive analysis on their systems. If an engineer or technician is using a piece of test equipment on a frequent basis, it is worth the investment in time (and reduced frustration) to read the manual and get familiar with the equipment’s features, controls and general operation.

As the product managers and field application staff at TDK-Lambda have found, using one of our engineering test benches to perform a test on a power supply is no longer a simple task. One is now faced with a bewildering array of buttons and menu driven features on what used to be an ‘easy to operate’ oscilloscope, leading to a plea for help.

During internal product training for TDK-Lambda’s new Z+ series of programmable dc power supplies, it quickly became obvious that this product line was going to fall into the same category as the new breed of high tech oscilloscopes.

Our previous generation of programmable power supplies, the ZUP, had simi-

lar buttons on the front panel, but their functions were simpler to access. For example, one button was used to set the voltage adjustment range to either coarse or fine. The additional features that are now included in the new Z+ mandated the use of menu-driven programming. Having multiple buttons on the front panel was

The TDK-Lambda team quickly decided that creating simple, short videos and posting them on our website and YouTube was the answer. MDO troubleshooting Using a mixed domain oscilloscope to take wireless system-level debug to the next level

The trend toward integrating wireless radios into a multitude of different products, from livestock tracking tags to smart energy home appliances, is causing a profound change in the responsibilities of engineers as they struggle to incorporate unfamiliar RF technology into their designs. System-level designers frequently find themselves needing to solve problems without equipment capable of performing the full range of required tasks.

Designers have historically struggled to make the measurements necessary to design, troubleshoot, and verify systems that contain analog, digital and RF signals. Until recently, no single instrument has been optimized for measuring all of these signal types. That changed last year with the emergence of the mixed domain oscilloscope (MDO) that combines a mixed signal oscilloscope with a modern spectrum analyzer. The key breakthrough provided by the MDO for troubleshooting and verification tasks is its ability to make time-correlated measurements across two domains: the time domain and the frequency domain. In addition, it can

make these measurements across 20 analog and digital signals, and an RF signal.

Time-correlated means that the mixed domain oscilloscope can measure timing relationships between all of its inputs.

It can, for instance, measure the time between a control bus sending a ”change frequency” command and the radio reaching the desired frequency, measure the turn-on time of a radio, or look at radiated emissions from a switching power supply. A power supply voltage dip during a device state change can be analyzed and correlated to the impact on the RF signal. Time correlation is critical for understanding the complete system operation: cause and effect.

Now let’s take a closer look at several applications areas where the MDO offers advantages compared to traditional equipment.

EMI detection Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) continues to be an important element of modern electronics design. Compliance to some level of Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) testing is required for every electronic device. It is often

difficult, however, to debug and troubleshoot problems in this area. Diagnostics become even more difficult if the source of interference is intermittent. It can be almost impossible to correlate emissions with specific events in an electronic device using traditional measurement techniques.

Examples include: • Correlating impulse emissions with specific memory access or diagnostic state of a device under test.

• Characterizing emissions during the device power-up or state changes such as going in and out of low power mode.

• Understanding the relationship between emissions and higher order harmonics.

The MDO is well-suited to these types of measurements. It combines a wide capture bandwidth of up to 3GHz in the frequency domain with the ability to make measurements at a specific point in time, correlated with events of interest in the time domain.

The noise from a power supply can be measured with an EMI current probe.

For the example in Figure 1, a switching power supply is being loaded by a resistor and small capacitor. The automated marker function of the MDO is used to show the frequency and amplitude of the most prominent signals radiating from the supply. The highest value is represented as the red reference marker. The fundamental frequency and the second harmonic are about the same level at around 30dBuA. The upper half of the screen shows the waveform at the switching transistor in the device under test.

One use for the MDO is to understand the effects of powering a radio IC with a switching power supply. This is aided considerably by the use of what is known as Spectrum Time. This allows the user to move through an acquisition in the time domain to investigate how the RF spectrum changes over time. In Figure 2, Spectrum Time is placed to show the spectrum of a transmitted signal during several symbols of a preamble of a packet.

To see the packet transmission from the radio, RF vs. time traces have been added to the time domain view. The orange trace marked with ‘A’ shows the instantaneous RF amplitude vs. time.

Identifying noise When integrating a radio chip or module into a typical embedded system, a common and often frustrating task designers face is tracking down and eliminating noise and spurious signals.

Potential noise sources include switching power supplies, digital noise from other parts of the system, and external sources. Noise considerations also include any possible interference generated by the radio as well as the need to avoid interfering with other radios while meeting regulatory requirements.

to about 40mA during transmission. The yellow trace (Channel 1) shows the ac ripple on the power supply voltage at the module. There is only a small dip in the voltage during transmission.

The previous capture was taken with the radio module powered by a clean laboratory power supply. In Figure 3, the same RF signal is shown but with a boost type switching supply powering the radio module. Boost regulators are notorious for generating noise, but are valuable to allow the use of a battery with one or two alkaline or NiCad cells and relatively few components, lowering the cost.

As shown, the noise has increased at the base of the modulated signal. Near the transmitted signal, there is noise at least 5dB higher than with the clean power supply. The noise is also readily apparent in the current and voltage waveforms. The additional noise would degrade the signal-to-noise ratio of the signal at the receiver used to gather the data from this transmitter, reducing the effective range of the radio system.

ZigBee integration As ZigBee and similar smart automation standards become more commonplace in all types of embedded systems and applications, engineers need the ability to quickly and efficiently validate and verify ZigBee module performance.

This system level task is made more complex with the presence of RF and the need to look at analog, digital and RF signals in concert with each other.

Some of the critical tests to verify radio operation include RF and power supply measurement, digital commands, spurious signals and interference. Radio ICs and modules need to be set up to meet the operating requirements of the specific application and any protocol-specific setups. The MDO allows decode of the SPI commands to the ZigBee module. In addition to SPI, decode can be obtained for additional protocols including I2C, RS-232, USB, Ethernet, CAN, LIN, and others.

Figure 4 shows the digital capture of the SPI commands. In this case, the analog, digital, and RF acquisitions have been set to trigger on the drain current of Trace 4 occurring above the 130 mA level. Not a game of perfect

The famed sports psychologist/author Dr. Bob Rotella wrote the book, “Golf Is Not a Game of Perfect.” He was right. It’s safe to say that golfers don’t hit a perfect shot every time they swing the club, but they aim to play the best round possible as measured by their score.

A few keys to shooting low scores on the golf course are to minimize the really bad mistakes, hit each shot with a clear mind and a specific target, and try to sink every putt no matter the distance. Likewise, when it comes to successful supply chain management, “Supply Chain Is Not a Game of Perfect,” and similar aims apply in order to provide the best possible service to the customer.

As you can imagine with our rapidly changing market, predicting appropriate inventory levels is a challenge for the entire supply chain. As an authorized distributor, it is our job to work with both the manufacturer and the customer to deliver the required quantity of products on time, every time. To determine our inventory levels, we attempt to forecast customer needs.

Unfortunately, we’ve all experienced forecast modifications. Depending on the economic climate, it seems to be either, “I know I ordered 100 pieces, but now I need 1,000,” or “I know I ordered 1,000 pieces, Allied warehouse is integral part of active supply chains. but now that’s 10-year’s worth of product, and I don’t want them.”

It would be useless to check the weather forecast for a big event happening six, three or even one month from now. Why, because the weather changes continuously. Sure, there may be weather patterns, but all patterns are broken every now and then.

Reactive communication: What...you didn't get the update?

Distributors are in unique positions to experience both the good and bad of modern communication. The preferred method of communication these days is generally electronic, be it EDI, email or a web-based portal where information is deposited for distributors to ‘go get.’ These methods are great, but sometimes updated or new information can get lost. As a result, our communications can be reactive instead of proactive. It appears to be a ‘CYA’ mentality versus one where world-class customer service is the goal.

In a common scenario we encounter as a distributor, our supplier may say, “Hey, we changed our electronic price file to show that our lead times went from 16 to 32 weeks.

Didn’t you see it?” Our Answer… “No, not until we went to expedite the parts that weren’t delivered on time.”

As our portfolio continues expanding to provide the market more products, our reliance on electronic communications will inherently increase. Our combined extended offer from our 300+ suppliers is in the tens of millions of individual SKUs. While necessary due to the sheer volume of order data being transmitted, authorized distributors need processes that enable us to easily detect and address unacknowledged orders and other dropped communications that lead to customer frustration and low service delivery.

In conclusion Forecasting, published lead times and various communication methods are tools distributors use to help get and provide superior service in rapidly changing markets, but they are not perfect. Just like the keys to ‘not a game of perfect’ for golf, the keys to supply chain management are to minimize the really bad mistakes, work with each supplier and customer focused on clear goals and targets, and communicate proactively before hazards come into play. Connector distributor Heilind Electronics, Markham On, has added a couple of new members to its sales team in Canada.

This August, Kellie Collins joined the firm as customer business specialist. Collins joins Heilind with 15 years of electronics distribution experience in sales and marketing.

In September, Christine Kreuch was appointed to the position of customer business manager. She comes to Heilind with 15 years of industry experience in various capacities, including distribution, manufacturer’s representative and direct suppliers.
