EDS show reveals highs/lows on disty landscape

June-July 2011

While buoyed by the incoming results over the first months of 2011, industry members attending the recent Electronics Distribution Show (EDS) show in Las Vegas were keeping their eyes focused on potential changes to their landscape ahead.

Bringing together all of the elements of the components supply chain, the annual electronics ‘meetings’ show has been an industry standard for more than 70 years, drawing distributors and manufacturers’ representatives to work in concert with vendors and suppliers.

Coming on the heels of a few soft years, many – if not most players within the distribution sphere have experienced a significant ‘uptick’ in business thus far in 2011. For many, it’s been as strong as double-digit growth.

Seemingly, show attendance had increased, with some participants returning after taking a break for a few years. That boomerang trend may improve even more next year, as EDS moves across the street to the brand new Cosmopolitan Hotel and Casino. Space within that facility provides plenty of room to grow, as suites and convention space are co-located in the same tower.

The EDS show is now stewarded by the recently formed ECIA, crafted through the consolidation of the National Electronic

Distributors Association (NEDA) and the Electronic Components Association (ECA). The Association connects all facets of the electronic components industry.

Networking is paramount to any success at this show, as multiple meetings are conducted within a short window of time, in sometimes very formal and sometimes very casual environments. Plenty of conjecture and observations were offered on the wake and impact to supply chain streams from the earthquake and tsunami in Japan this March. Aftershocks continue to rumble underfoot, limiting component production runs. Fabs that are operating are doing so at half-speed, as the country endures rolling power blackouts imposed by government. Most agreed that the full impact won’t be measured until the year’s end.

EDS has changed and evolved many times through its history to stay relevant. So, kudos to the show management for their most recent efforts to keep the push/pull of EDS meaningful.

Krayden opens Toronto warehouse

In an effort to better serve its Canadian customers, Krayden Inc., Denver CO, distributor of engineered materials, has opened a new warehouse in Toronto.

“With the booming solar industry and the supportive benefits offered in Canada, the expansion in Toronto was a natural next step for Krayden,” says Krayden president Wayne Wagner. “We are on the front line working with customers and the new technology being developed in thermal management and conductive transfer. Also, we are members of CanSia and fully support this growing market. Having a stocking warehouse centrally located will allow us to provide more cost effective and efficient service to support our Canadian customers.”

Canadian co-creator of CCD sensor dies Willard Boyle, Nobel laureate Canadian born co-creator of the charge coupled device (CCD) Willard Boyle, passed away at the age of 86. The technology is at the heart of every digital camera, camcorder, telescope, copier and HD TV. In 1969 the native of Amherst NS invented the CCD with George E. Smith, his colleague at AT&T Bell Laboratories. The lab was working on semiconductor bubble memory when Boyle and Smith conceived of the design of what they termed, in their notebook, “Charge ‘Bubble’ Devices”. Boyle’s prolific scientific career included inventing the fist laser to be used in medicine and helping to choose sites on the moon for NASA’s manned landings.

In recognition of their efforts, they jointly received the Franklin Institute’s Stuart Ballantine Medal in 1973, the 1974 IEEE Morris N. Liebmann Memorial Award, the 2006 Charles Stark Draper Prize, and – most notably - the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics.

CATA spearheads embedded systems research In an effort to promote the manufacturing of embedded systems across this country, the Canadian Advanced Technology Alliance (CATA) has initiated a three-pronged approach to researching the field in Canada.

CATA’s initiative, including a survey of Canadian industry, case studies of some industry leaders and embedded systems workshops, will set out to define the niches of excellence and trends within Canada’s embedded systems market, worth more than $100-billion globally. The study will be published in fall 2011.

An embedded system board, also called embedded PC, consists of an electronic board placed inside a product to improve its performance. It can be a system as complex as the automatic pilot of an aircraft or as simple as a timer for the dishwasher. Unlike a computer, the embedded system performs the same function or set of functions all of the time, often in real time, and never fail.

“The embedded systems use more than 95% of microprocessors manufactured each year - the rest are being used by desktops, laptops and smartphones,” says CATA president John Reid. “When one networks embedded systems, one connects the physical and the virtual world. This is known as the Internet of things.”

All industries are engaged in a race to integrate intelligence into their traditional products. Three of them represent the bulk of investment in embedded systems software: aerospace, automotive and advanced technologies (including medical device manufacturers, telecom equipment). Reid says Canada is a leader in these three areas.

TELUS to build $65-million data centre in Quebec TELUS has announced plans to construct a $65-million Tier III intelligent Internet data centre in Rimouski QC. The ‘green’ facility will be built to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Standards. The facility will become a cornerstone in the firm’s strategic shift in support of next-generation cloud computing and unified communications solutions.

Representing Rimouski’s largest private employer with more than 1,400 employees, construction of the new TELUS intelligent Internet Data Centre is set to begin this spring with the opening scheduled for 2012. The new facility will be directly connected to the national TELUS IP network and interconnect into existing data centers across the country.

STMicro & McGill U collaborate on program Global semiconductor supplier STMicroelectronics, has collaborated with McGill University in Montreal, to create an undergraduate course that teaches the integration of multiple state-of-the-art sensors into embedded computer systems. Some 35 students have already completed the course, which started in January 2011.

The new course, which is the first of its kind in North America, includes laboratory exercises and a final project that enables students to analyse and design systems that include the integration of data from multiple sensors. It was designed by Professor Zeljko Zilic of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at McGill University and is based around ST’s award-winning iNEMO, a unique platform that integrates ST’s most advanced accelerometers, gyroscopes and magnetometers, together with pressure and temperature sensors, to provide 3-axis sensing of linear, angular and magnetic motion, complemented with temperature and barometer/altitude readings.

“We believe this new course, which integrates the curricula of Computer, Electrical and Software Engineering programs, provides an ideal foundation for modern system design, which increasingly requires the ability to combine computer system and software design, as well as the signal processing needed to integrate multiple sensor data,” said Professor Zilic. “For example, smart phones now routinely employ multiple movement sensors to make more effective and intuitive user interfaces, navigation control and position detection and the same technology has unlimited applications in areas as diverse as robotics, factory automation and energy systems.”

A report on emerging technology companies released by PwC shows that for the second straight year, angel investors have taken over as the primary funding source for these companies, with venture capitalist fundraising at a 16-year low. Angels typically invest their own funds, unlike venture capitalists, who manage the pooled money of others in a professionally-managed fund.

Overall, 53% of respondents to its survey who raised money last year received their funding from angels, compared to 8% who received funding from venture capitalists. This presents a challenge that limits Canadian technology businesses from competing in the global market, the report says.

“Fundraising trends are an important predictor of innovation and growth in this sector,” says Peter Matutat, partner and national emerging company practice leader at PwC. “Our report shows that companies who successfully raised capital in 2010 were 3.5 times more likely to adopt an aggressive approach to business reinvestment compared to businesses that were unsuccessful. One of the problems in our market is that Canadian companies receive only 39% of the dollars that go to their US competitors ($3.2 million vs. $8.2 million on average in 2010).”

The 50-page report polled over 160 CEOs of emerging Canadian software

companies on a variety of topics including growth, marketing, raising capital, research, talent recruitment and mergers. Overall, revenues in this sector are increasing and forecasts are back at prerecession levels. Overall revenue growth was approximately 32% in 2010, just slightly behind the survey’s historic average of 35%.

Other findings from the report include: • Over 60% of CEOs expect revenues to increase at least 25% in 2011.

• 73% expect their companies will be acquired in the next 5 years.

• 84% are using cloud computing in some form .

• More than 80% are taking a more aggressive approach to business planning.

“One of the more dramatic surprises from our report this year is the extent to which the war for talent is heating up - 44% list recruiting as their biggest talent management issue. This is the first time in eight years that access to human resources has emerged as a significant challenge,” says Matutat. “The report shows that while turnover is low, the availability of new staff is an issue and the supply of new software developers and management talent is no longer keeping up with demand. As the economy continues to improve, and the workforce ages, this will only continue to be a significant problem for CEOs,” he says.

Forest products are BC’s most important export commodity, historically accounting for more than half of the total value of BC’s international goods exports.

EPOXY POWDER A coating material with multiple benefits

Electrical and mechanical system designers often use the following criteria for determining the best power distribution method throughout their systems: operating environment constraints, component geometry, power requirements and cost. Those same considerations are used in selecting electrical insulations. In many cases, these indicators lead designers and engineers to epoxy powder coating as the best option for high dielectric insulations of copper and aluminum conductors.

Consideration #1: Operating environment Epoxy powder has been used as a coating material for consumer goods for several decades. As its durability, cost-effectiveness and ease of application have been tested and proven in numerous applications, epoxy powder has

gained traction in the electrical market, as well. Common applications now include motor components, switchgear and cable replacement, as well as many others.

Many of the powders used for these electrical insulation applications are rated as class B service coatings (266F/130C) and have a UL 94 V-0 flammability rating.

Space, thermal conditions and reliability considerations continue to drive engineers to more efficient designs, including coating materials. For example, single conductors are edging out cable, since single copper or aluminum stamping allow any geometric shape to be produced. Forming operations finalize the part configuration into one homogeneous component, achieving tighter bends than are possible with cables. By calculating the most appropriate width-to-thickness ratio needed for the required amperage, designers can improve airflow, reduce voltage drop and component count, while

A4938 three-phase brushless dc motor predriver provides outputs for direct high current gate drive of an all N-channel power MOSFET three phase bridge with a maximum supply voltage of 38V. Detecting counterfeit

electronic components

The economic impact of counterfeit goods in our society is staggering. The world trade of counterfeit goods is estimated at over $600-billion dollars annually. As consumers, we often buy counterfeit goods in the form of clothing, handbags, watches, golf clubs etc, either willingly or naively since we are not particularly concerned with the long term quality of such items.

No one wants to buy counterfeit food or medication, yet we often purchase those from uncontrolled sources, becoming targets for unscrupulous sellers of less-than-perfect products.

Counterfeit cereal is so widespread that Kellogg’s has developed a hitech method to stamp out imitations by laser branding individual flakes in Corn Flakes cereal with the company logo. If melamine can find its way in brand name baby formula or pet food, what lurks in deliberately counterfeit food products?

The problem is unquestionably bigger than this. That figure only accounts for the incidents reported, and the majority of incidents go unreported.

Who falls prey to counterfeit components?

Why would you be a target for counterfeit components? Do you have a need for obsolete components, a need for leaded components in a lead-free world, a need for lead-free older components, for repairs or for special applications? Caveat emptor! (Let the buyer beware). What can you do to ensure that counterfeits do not find their way into your product?

Although counterfeiters get better all the time, when the intention is to deceive, quality monitoring is not too strict and there are often tell-tales signs to look for.

Scratches, poor markings and evidence of prior use are often present and easily detectable to the naked eye or a low power microscope. Such defects are not to be ignored. If you do dismiss these indications, you may be the next victim of a sly forger.

Not every counterfeit component is a clone. At MuAnalysis, we have seen only a few cloned ICs but several instances of cloned capacitors and some cloned diodes. Many counterfeit parts are not clones, they are genuine older parts, sometimes used, sometimes known to be defective, that have been rebranded, often cleaned of lead plating, and sold as new parts. The uniformity of manufacturing expected in a date or lot code is absent when parts from various dates and sources are grouped together.

It’s likely to be a bonfire by the side of the dump. The process of refurbishing second-hand parts is called black topping and consists of applying a thin coat of new encapsulant on an old part. Only certain chemical etches can reveal that the part has been black topped.

X-Ray may not detect anything unusual

What lies inside the new exterior is a defective die. X-Ray may not detect anything unusual, acoustic microscopy might detect a reclaimed part, if the die has cracked or the part is badly delaminated.

Parts assembled from bad wafers look pristine if the counterfeiter is skilled.

Opening the part and looking at the die may not reveal anything amiss unless the defects are gross. We have seen a part that was missing a mask level. If a reference part had not been available the deception would not have been detected.

Passive components are easier to clone than ICs. Cloned capacitors are unfortunately very common. Usually the electrical performance of cloned components does not match the datasheet. Bench testing a few components from the lot is quick and simple. If the mean value of any parameter is off, including the exterior dimensions, further analysis may be desirable. The consequence of installing a counterfeit capacitor or resistor in a product is a shorter than expected lifetime which may result, among other things, in tarnishing of the product’s and company’s reputations. Other easy to clone items include diodes, resistors and hybrids.

Some parts look suspicious and are easy to spot. Most parts are small, but what is missed by the naked eye is obvious under a microscope. If the package thickness is less than specified, this is a tell-tale sign of rebranding. Pay attention to cleanliness, fonts and logos. Do not ignore the subtle signs. If the quality looks questionable, it probably is.

X-Ray Fluorescence can detect residual tin-lead plating or lead balls. If the part is sold as lead-free, you have a counterfeit in-hand. X-Ray imaging can easily pick up differences in die size or configuration, and detects die attach voiding, which is never a good thing, particularly if the part has high power consumption.

Acoustic microscopy reveals previous use by detecting delamination or cracked die. Mask revisions and die level defects, which can affect functionality, are much harder to spot.

New standards aim to mitigate problem Standards such as AS5553 and AS6081 are being developed to mitigate the proliferation of counterfeit components by defining practices and methods related to parts management, supplier management, procurement, inspection, test/evaluation and response strategies when suspected or confirmed counterfeit parts are discovered.

Tests are available to spot counterfeits, some you can do yourself, some that require specialized equipment. However tests are useless if you are not aware that you are a target and ignore the evidence before your eyes. Be vigilant and avoid falling into the counterfeit trap.

Birde Marketing establishes new leadership Toronto-area based manufacturers’ representatives Birde Marketing Inc., recently appointed a new president, Mario Colacino. No stranger to the Markham ON firm, he has spent the past 23 years with Birde in a range of sales related positions.

Colacino was elevated to his new post to provide a refreshed approach to sales. He follows a strong history of sales leadership, upon recent retirement of Ivan Noble, who was one of Birde’s original founders.

Among his immediate plans, Colacino is looking to add some new principals that “work synergistically” with the existing linecard, which already includes such regarded vendors as Lemo Connectors.

“Passive components are our specialty, not commodity products,” he says. “We like to get involved with our customer’s design process. Often providing guidance through design challenges in a wide array of applications - from component use in an operating room environment to a dirty, oil and gas down-hole project site,” Colacino adds.

TTI rolls out bevy of online service options With the mission of improving customer experience online, electronic component distributor TTI Inc., Fort Worth TX, has rolled out a number of online service options to its global client base.

TTI has expanded the capabilities of its web-based part search tools. Customers accessing ezBuy can now search by customer part number or manufacturer part number online. The resulting combined customer-specific part number information and detailed product information provides for much easier part identification for customers, according to Kevin Schubert, global eBusiness director, TTI. “The improved service allows online users to tie their TTI terms account to their online shopping experience. This cohesion enables customer part number cross references, custom pricing, online ordering, and payment terms throughout the TTI website.,” Schubert says.

TTI also introduced a time saving enhancement to ezBill, the company’s online invoicing service. ezBill customers have access to invoices online, as well as the ability to have digital invoices sent directly to them via email. Adding to this,

customers can control the frequency in which ezBill notifications are sent to them.

TTI also recently expanded its capabilities of the online Multi-Part Upload toolset, providing an option of uploading multiple parts from the firm’s spreadsheet and choosing the specific data to import through Multi-Part Upload. Once the parts have been uploaded, customers can choose to add the parts into a new or existing Project List, add the parts directly into a cart, request a quotation from a salesperson, or submit the list for a Quick Quote.

“Adding new functionality to Multi-Part Upload is the first of many steps we’re taking to help our customers manage their bill of materials more quickly and efficiently online,” comments Schubert.

Digi-Key adds Orion, Peregrine Electronic components distributor Digi-Key Corp., Thief River Falls MN, signed a global distribution agreement to list the entire thermal management portfolio of Orion Fans, Dallas TX, including ac fans, dc fans, fan trays, fan accessories and blowers.

Importance of managing and automating supply chain efficiency

With more than 60-million different electronic components available in the market, it’s no wonder companies have spent a tremendous amount of time, energy and money during the last couple of decades to automate the massive amount of transactions in the manufacturing supply chain to make it more manageable and efficient.

Improved visibility provided by stateof-the-art forecast management tools helps balance the original equipment manufacturers’ (OEMs) need to minimize inventory carrying costs through a JIT environment and the component manufacturers’ goal to build to order while keeping their plants at near capacity.

Likewise, the continuous development of on-site inventory programs, consignment or auto-replenishment programs being offered by distributors provide a buffer through vendor-managed inventory.

Moreover, efficiency gains made by sharing information in real time via EDI transmittals have allowed supply chain partners the ability to anticipate disruptions earlier in the process and, once detected, react quickly to stave off shortages before a line goes down.

In many ways, however, designing for manufacturability is still somewhat of an industry frontier. While sophisticated MRP, ERP and PLM tools work hard to smooth out the production process, even the best cannot help much if the design engineer has selected a recently introduced device which has not gained enough traction to be readily available, or, worse yet, is on the verge of obsolescence. Respect for freedom of design to produce an innovative product often pre-

Sourcing managers who claim they don’t have time to closely manage their engineering buys because they are small dollars in the scope of the purchasing volume they handle miss the point of how much impact these small dollar buys will have on their ability to smooth out their supply chain long term.

Knowing where samples and prototype material are being secured is paramount to ensuring that the choices made in design are not causing more downstream problems.

Recent engineering surveys, such as those conducted by US-based media companies, indicate public websites are increasingly useful – component manufacturers’ sites primarily for product information, and then distributors’ websites for finding off-the-shelf inventory for prototypes and NPI builds. Engineers should be careful to selects components recommended for new designs, as it will be important that the designers’ selections are available once a product moves into production.

The ability to marry the growing number of distributor online tools available to the engineering community with the needs of supply chain management teams provides the best opportunity for next level improvements.

Failure to manage this important step in the supply chain’s front end leaves it open to significant disruption.

Selecting the right partner to assist with component sourcing selection at the design phase is one of the best ways an OEM can maintain an assurance of supply through production. Using the same criteria when selecting a distributor partner for engineering and prototype buys as is used when selecting a production fulfillment partner is a good way to ensure end-to-end support throughout the entire lifecycle of the end product, and newly available online tools make doing this even easier.

The Electronic Components Industry Association (ECIA), Atlanta GA, has launched an industry-owned and managed inventory search website that aims to assist purchasers in avoiding gray market and counterfeit products.

The site (www.eciaauthorized.com ) only lists inventory that is genuine and backed by the manufacturer’s warranty, according to Robin Gray, Jr., ECIA’s president and CEO. “This website is a key component in the association’s efforts to fight the sale of counterfeit parts, providing customers with a secure site to find authorized product,” says Gray. All sales are completed through the distributor’s site with no inventory offered through the association’s site. In addition, search results are random based on search match and availability. Search results are not influenced by advertising or sponsorships.

The ECIA is a not-for-profit trade association representing manufacturers of electronic components, their authorized distribution partners and manufacturer representatives.

Laser marking aids tracking traceability

Overtaking use of inkjet systems Laser marking, a fast and clean marking technology, is rapidly replacing older product marking technology, in particular, inkjet marking systems. A key factor in the widespread adoption of laser marking is the exponential increase in the use of direct marking of part information to aid in tracking and traceability, from medical devices to automotive and aerospace parts.

The part information may be in the form of human readable alphanumerics and barcode or Data-Matrix codes.

Easy and flexible automation, improved environmental profile and low cost of ownership add to the benefits of the technology. A variety of laser technologies are available, depending upon the application, mark type needed, and material to be marked.

duce a high quality, permanent mark on an object. Hardware steers the focused beam using two mirrors mounted on high speed precision galvo motors to produce the mark. Each mirror moves along a single axis. These galvos move extremely quickly with very little inertia, and can therefore write marks at high speeds.

The beam is focused using an F-Theta lens that produces a focus across the mark plane. The mark ‘appears’ when the material on which it is being made is changed by the interaction with laser light. Other than the mark itself, the surface of the part being marked remains unchanged. Figure 1 is a generalized diagram of a typical laser marker.

A laser marking system is usually made up of a highly flexible and controllable laser source that is coupled via control software and hardware to a very fast and accurate motion system. The laser is equipped with software that enables the marking of text, graphics, logos, barcodes and Data-Matrix codes. Automation features enable part serialization, date coding, variable text inputs, remote programming, input/output control and many other programming features.

Lasers can make very precise, clean marks on both metals and plastics, at high speeds, making them suitable for most manufacturing processes. They can also be used for engraving, a similar process, but one that alters the part’s surface, leaving a mark that can be both seen and felt.

Laser marking is a non-contact process, which uses no consumables, making it clean and energy-efficient. It is also an environmentally friendly process that uses no inks and chemicals like those used in other marking options, including inkjet or chemical etching. The process produces a highly flexible mark that

can adapt to changing demands. It is also a high speed process, appropriate for a wide range of markable materials, including steels, aluminum, polyolefins, engineering and medical plastics, silicon, and many others.

The laser marking process is very wellsuited to the marking of both barcodes and two-dimensional barcodes on many of these materials. The code quality and resolution can be tuned for the space available and the quality of the reader.

Selecting the right laser marker for an application Several laser marking technologies are on the market and each one has specific marking characteristics that align best with particular materials and applications. The major choices are Ytterbium:fiber (Yb:fiber); Neodymium: vanadate (Nd:YVO4); green (532 nanometers (nm)); ultraviolet (UV); and carbon dioxide (CO2). In addition, Neodymiumdoped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) is an older technology that is still being used in the high power market, but has largely been superseded by one of the others listed.

Each of these lasers and types of laser materials create light at different

wavelengths and with different optical properties, for example, peak power and pulse width. Both the green and UV lasers use the Nd:YVO4 laser engine, but employ additional materials to change the light wavelength from 1064nm to 532nm and 355nm respectively. Each laser wavelength is suited to different marking requirements based upon material, contrast, size of characters and thermal input to the part.

Yb:fiber- cost effective with great mark quality The fiber laser is the latest laser design, in which the laser is generated in an ytterbium-doped silica fiber. The pump energy is supplied by single emitter telecom style diodes, which have an extremely long estimated life, up to 100,000 hours.

High energy efficiency and low maintenance requirements give the fiber laser the lowest cost of ownership.

Corrosion resistant marking.

Nd:YVO4 – fine laser marking This laser marker is designed for high resolution fine marking, where very fine detail or small character sizes are needed. With excellent beam quality and a minimum focused spot size of less than 0.001-inches (25 microns), Nd:YVO4 markers make fine contrasting marks possible on metals, plastics, and ceramics. The laser architecture enables very high peak powers (greater than 30 kilowatts (kW)) and very short pulse widths (less than 20 nanoseconds (ns)), providing the level of control needed for high resolution marking.

UV – extremely high resolution/ contrast for plastics and corrosion resistant marking The UV laser marker can be thought of like a green marker on steroids. Its 355nm wavelength offers unique marking characteristics, providing excellent contrasting marks on many plastics that other lasers are unable to mark, for example those used for medical tubing, and highly reliable corrosion resistant marking of 17-X stainless steels. The 355nm wavelength further increases the range of plastics that can be marked with contrast, and also offers the ultimate control of heat input when marking metals.

CO2 – best solution for printed circuit boards, paper and wood The sealed CO2 laser has a laser medium that is a combination of gases sealed into an aluminum tube under reduced pressure.

The laser pump energy is provided by radio frequency (RF) energy. The CO2 laser can mark plastics however the marks are engraved, with no surface contrast. The CO2 laser marker, operating at 10604nm wavelength, is used extensively for marking such organic material as paper and wood, as well as printed circuit board (pcb) material and glass. It is not suited for marking bare aluminum, copper or brass or producing quality marks on steels.

Conclusion With a variety of choices for use in almost any application that requires direct marking or engraving, laser marking technology offers a superior solution over other marking technologies. Benefits include permanent mark quality; highly flexible marks that can incorporate text, graphics, logos and data codes; and a wide range of markable materials. In addition, laser marking is a high speed process that is easily integrated into the manufacturing line. Safety is enhanced because laser marking is a non-contact process with good standoff distance, and the lack of chemicals makes it environmentally preferable.

SpaceX achieves major milestone towards more reliable and cost effective space access On June of 2010, SpaceX, a private space venture chosen by NASA to provide cargo resupply services to the International Space Station, successfully launched its new Falcon 9 launch vehicle into orbit. The test launch was an overwhelming success, with Falcon 9 reaching orbital velocity and achieving its intended orbit. A company representative referred to the launch as a great day for SpaceX and a promising step forward for the US space program.

This exciting event was just one more step in SpaceX’s ambitious mission to reduce the cost and increase the reliability of space access by a factor of ten. This long term team effort combines the creativity and hard work of many individuals. One of them is George Ketigian, an Avionics Engineer responsible for developing electronics that range from in-flight devices, to testing and launch control.

Much of the ground electronics that Mr. Ketigian develops are installed in rack mounted enclosures, which he would traditionally acquire on an ‘off-the-shelf’ basis, and then customize in SpaceX’s in-house CNC machining facilities. Although this approach got the job done, sourcing and modifying enclosures takes a lot of effort and focus, and sending his enclosure projects to Protocase gives Ketigian more time for other aspects of his job.

In 2008 Ketigian adopted a new approach to this part of his job. He began to work with Protocase, who specializes in building custom enclosures for engineers and designers. Protocase’s combination of advanced enclosure design tools and unique 2-3 day manufacturing process can change the way that designers work, giving easy access to fully finished professional quality metal enclosures with a fraction of the time and effort required by traditional techniques.

Ketigian now uses Protocase’s free ‘online enclosure template generator’ tool, which creates a base design for him, and then customizes it by using SpaceX’s 3D CAD system to add details such as cutouts, fasteners, and silkscreens. The designs are then sent to Protocase who builds them in 2-3 days.

By automatically generating the base enclosure design, he retains the simplicity of dealing with off-the-shelf enclosures, in that he starts with a fully functional base design without having to design the box from scratch. But he also gains the advantages of doing the modifications in CAD, and gets a fully finished custom enclosure, built to meet his needs right out of the box.

Ketigian says, “The custom built box is more expensive than buying off-theshelf enclosures, but if I account for my own time savings, we’re actually saving money. Plus I get to focus on other more important parts of my job”.

Ketigian also notes that he achieves better overall results, which is particularly important at SpaceX. The enclosures are built to his exact needs without compromise. This includes aesthetic features which he expresses through custom graphic-like cutouts and bold silkscreen graphics. “SpaceX has a special culture. We’re relaxed, Southern California style, but totally dedicated to our work. Going the extra distance to make our electronics look great is an expression of our creativity and pride in our work.”

Miniature illuminated snap-in rocker switches are configurable CWS Series of fullface illuminated miniature rocker switches are available with red, green or amber illumination and are configurable with either LED (CWSC) or neon (CWSB) lighting. Product’s snap-in mount capability ensures labor saving installation. Devices are rated 9A @ 125Vac for resistive loads. Model CWSC has a rating of 6A @ 250Vac, while model CWSB versions provide a built-in resistor for direct connection to the ac power source. The offset terminal alignment on both versions improves insulation resistance and dielectric strength.

Oscilloscope platform enhances performance, analysis MSO/DPO5000 Series mixed signal oscilloscope platform includes FastAcq with a >250,000 wfm/s maximum waveform capture rate to discover elusive problems, FastFrame segmented memory acquisition and long record length to capture long time periods at high resolution, extensive built-in tools for in-depth analysis of complex designs, and a Windows-based user interface for easy networking and intuitive operation. Product series includes eight models ranging from 350MHz of analog bandwidth and 5 GS/s sample rates to 2GHz and 10GS/s for higher-end applications. Record length ranges from 12.5M up to 250M for in-depth analysis and debug. Each model has 4 analog channels.

The MSO models provide 16 digital channels and built-in parallel bus trigger and decode functionality.

500 Knob configurations fit rotary switches, encoders

Assortment of nylon spacers and washers grip the outside of a screw shank and provide specially configured inside diameters to grip screw shank. This enables the spacers or washers to easily slide onto screws while assuring secured retention via the screw threads. Products help reduce final assembly costs by simplifying assembly process. Devices accommodate #4, #6, #8 and #10 size screws in body lengths from .125” to 1” in increments of .125”, while the washers accommodate #2, #4, #6, #8, #10, .250” and .375” size screws, with thickness of .032” or .062”.

500 configurations of knobs in various styles are available as push-on, set-screw, collet, wing, bell-shaped, aluminum, locking and specialty knobs. Product series serves the two-communications, medical, industrial, audio, military, and instrumentation markets. Product’s have specialty features such as unique shapes, a soft-touch feel, ergonomic design. The collet knobs provide a more reliable grip on the switch shaft with metal ‘fingers’ that tighten evenly around the shaft.

This prevents slippage and ensures that the shaft will not be marred or damaged, unlike knobs that use set-screws.
