Fluid Check

A

ccording to experienced fluid power technicians, if you want to gauge the general health of a hydraulic system, a quick look inside the fluid reservoir will tell you just about everything you need to know. If, for example, there are signs of varnish or sludge deposits in the tank, it’s a clear indication that the fluid is running too hot and the oxidation is probably gumming up the works elsewhere in the system.

Conversely, the presence of condensation suggests the oil is too cool which can increase the likelihood of cavitation—tiny imploding air bubbles that can eat through pump surfaces like acid. Similarly, foamy build up could indicate a number of things including low fluid levels, system leaks or faulty shaft seals.

Interestingly, gauging the relative health of the fluid power industry on the whole is nearly as straight forward. Annually, Design Engineering conducts its own “fluid check” by talking with the lifeblood of the industry—fluid power manufacturers, distributors, practitioners and academics.

Over the past five years, discussions with these leaders of Canada’s fluid power industry revealed progressively worsening signs of stress and wear. Beneath the concern over declines in the automotive sector and North American manufacturing in general lurked an increasingly pessimistic undertone: The industry is in decline, the numbers of young fluid power engineers and technicians are dwindling and the technology is mature, even stagnant. By 2009, the mood was downright bleak.

This year’s annual fluid power roundtable, however, took a decidedly positive turn. Participants talked enthusiastically about upswings in staple industries including forestry, mining, oil and gas and even automotive to a certain extent. Indications are equally upbeat in the general fluid power market as well. The International Fluid Power Expo (IFPE), held in late March 2011, had the largest showing in its 27-year history, with approximately 140,450 square feet of exhibit space, representing a 9-percent increase over 2008’s event.

Besides suggesting an improvement in North American manufacturing, IFPE 2011 also revealed that the industry’s efforts to overcome some of its systemic challenges (e.g. leakage, inefficiency, environmental concerns, etc) have begun to spawn concrete solutions. Co-locating its annual meeting at IFPE this year, the Centre for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power (CCEFP) showed off one of its mobile hydraulic test beds, a five-ton Bobcat 435 excavator with a displacementcontrolled hydraulic system that shows an approximate 40 percent savings in fuel consumption.

Industry, likewise, demonstrated that innovation was the watchword at the triennial fluid power event. Eaton debuted its new leak free hydraulic connectors and LifeSense hose that actively detects wear and potential failure. Similarly, companies like Eaton, Bosch Rexroth and Parker Hannifin have vigorously pushed hybrid hydraulic systems to cut fuel consumption in garbage trucks and transit buses by as much as 30 percent.

While none of these indicators is ground shaking by itself, taken together they suggest that the fluid power industry has turned an important corner, both economically and technologically. Hopefully, the work performed during the down years will keep the industry running smoothly for the next five years and beyond.

R

olls-Royce announced it will invest C$225 million to develop new technologies for the Group’s Energy business in Canada. Funding will be provided over five years and the R&D work will focus primarily on enhancing Rolls-Royce product offerings in the oil & gas and power generation markets.

Investissement Québec’s Strategic Support for Investment Program (PASI) is supporting the investment with a C$30 million funding facility repayable through royalties.

The goal is to create higher power and lower emissions aero-derivative gas turbines through the use of new combustion technology, fit for purpose industrial materials and alternative fuels. Work will be undertaken in the Rolls-Royce facility in Montreal. The investment is expected to help secure around 100 engineering jobs at the Group’s Montreal facility.

“This investment would not have been possible without the talent, innovation and track record of our Montreal engineering team, combined with the continuing support of our customers, suppliers and government partners,” said Tom Scarinci, Rolls-Royce, Executive Vice President of Engineering and Technology – Energy.

Rolls-Royce Canada Limited, a subsidiary of Rolls-Royce plc, is a diversified aero engine services and industrial gas turbine facility based in Lachine, Quebec, near the Montréal International Airport.

The company’s Energy business unit, also based in Montreal, is the worldwide research and development, manufacturing and support center for aero-derived industrial gas turbines, used for oil and gas related applications and land-based power generation installations.

Rolls-Royce currently employs more than 1,700 in Canada, including 200 energy R&D engineers. The Montreal plant also serves more than 600 aircraft operators in 30 countries and is an authorized maintenance center for a number of its jet engines. Follow Through MapleSim helps Cleveland Golf engineer superior golf club

I

n the world of golf, players are always looking for ways to improve their game, and equipment manufacturers are looking for ways to give their customers an edge. While it may not look it, the shaft of the driver is a highly engineered and expensive component. The role of the shaft is so important, in fact, that some people call it the “engine” of the driver.

Cleveland Golf / Srixon, an internationally recognized maker of golf clubs, wanted to investigate and understand the effect of different club weights and club lengths on the performance of the driver. A key focus for them was to understand how the flexibility of the shaft, in both bending and torsion, needed to be optimized for different club weights and lengths. The engineers were looking for a good, efficient model to explore the effects of different shaft designs on club performance.

MapleSoft’s simulation software, MapleSim, helped Cleveland Golf / Srixon run “what if” design scenarios for its latest line of drivers.

With the help of Dr. John McPhee, NSERC Industrial Research Chair and professor of Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo, they used MapleSim to create a model of a driver. The shaft itself was modeled using MapleSim’s built-in flexible beam component. The driver head model was carefully designed to include the exact characteristics of the driver head, including its mass and moments of inertia.

To simulate a variety of swings from different players, experimental measurements were taken from varsity players on the university golf team. This information was input into the model as the 6 degree-of-freedom motion of the grip, which in turn March/April | 2011

determined the movement of the shaft.

Different versions of this base model were created by modifying model parameters to match the properties of the different club designs.

When the models were validated against the experimental data, good to very good agreement was found between the simulation and the experimental data for club head speed and the dynamic loft and droop at the instant of contact with the ball. In addition, the MapleSim models were found to run significantly faster than similar models based on finite-element techniques.

“The advantage of tools such as MapleSim is that it automatically and reliably generates equations of motions and simulates the system response in an efficient manner,” said Dr. McPhee.

“Another advantage is that you can simplify equations and generate optimized simulation code. For Cleveland Golf / Srixon, these features were important because they helped us experiment with different shaft designs in a very short time.”

An important part of MapleSim is its strength at handling symbolic processing, which leads to very fast simulations. Unlike numeric systems, equations of motion are generated only once for that specific model and not at every time step of the simulation. Beneath MapleSim lies Maple, which allows extensive analysis of data. The multi-disciplinary nature of MapleSim also allows multi-domain modeling within the same tool, and easy sharing of information.

“The MapleSim models we’re running allow us to predict head delivery conditions with more variables, higher precision and faster run times,” said John Rae, vice president, R&D at Cleveland Golf / Srixon. “Using MapleSim’s simulation tools, we can generate custom swing calculations based on every equipment variable, leaving nothing to speculation.”

With efficient, validated dynamic models of a golf driver, Cleveland Golf / Srixon was able to quickly explore different “what if” scenarios. This allowed them to identify the ideal combinations for their newest product offering, the Launcher Ultralight Series, which consists of three distinct drivers with unique weight, length and shaft combinations.

Operator Panel Baldor Electric released an IP65rated operator panel with a CANopen interface and an optional plug-in digital I/O module. The KPD202-501 panel features a backlit 4-line, 20-character LCD surrounded by six programmable function keys. A further 15 keys are provided for the input of numeric values, together with four pairs of keys which can be used for functions such as jogging individual machine axes. As standard, the panel is equipped with a CANopen port, which offers a choice of D-type and RJ45 plug-in connectors and a user-selectable RS232/485 serial port. The panel can be programmed directly from the motion controller to which it is connected, using Baldor’s Mint programming language. Where CANopen is not available, the panel can be operated as a standard VT100 terminal over its RS232/485 serial port, which is fully supported within the Mint programming language. www.baldor.com

EtherCAT Analog I/O Box Beckhoff Automation has extended its range of IP67 I/O modules with the new EP4374 EtherCAT Box that combines two analog inputs and two analog outputs into one device. The input and output channels can be parameterized independent of each other for the standard signals 0…10 V, ±10 V, 0…20 mA and 4…20 mA. Each channel is configurable individually for current or voltage measurement or output. The resolution for the current and voltage signals is 16 bit (signed). The EP4374-0002 module has a direct EtherCAT connection, so that the 100 Mbit/s Industrial Ethernet is retained to each IP67 box. XY Stage Dover Motion announced that its MMG Mini-Mag line of precision linear motor tables are now available in aluminumbased versions with an optional single phase motor. For XY sample positioning, sustained throughput of up to 2,000 moves per minute is possible. For focal plane definition, the optimum Z position of the magnifying objective is determined, and the vertical objective positioning moves (<5um) are often accomplished in <20ms. Four options (25mm, 50mm 100mm or 150mm travel) are currently available. The MMG provides uncompensated accuracy ranging from 2µm to 8µm and resolution options ranging from 1.0µm down to 5µm. The actuators combine a brushless servomotor with either rotary or linear actuation and Exlar’s digital position control, into a waterproof housing. Linear Actuator Haydon Kerk Motion Solutions introduced the SRA04 Motorized ScrewRail linear actuator with an integrated size 11 stepper motor. The ScrewRail consists of a Kerk precision rolled lead screw supported by sealed ball bearings and contained within a concentric steel guide rail, driving an integrated nut and bushing. The ScrewRail is available with either a freewheeling (SRA) or anti-backlash (SRZ) nut assembly. When mounted vertically, the ScrewRail can be used to simultaneously lift and rotate (Z-theta motion), making the unit ideal for pick-and-place mechanisms. Up to 72-inch stroke length is available. IdeaGenerator Sensors Proximity Sensors Carlo Gavazzi announced its ICB series, a generation of inductive proximity sensors that incorporate a potting material of recycled corn by-product that resists mechanical stress, the company says. In addition, the ICB series features an air-core sensing coil, which has a higher immunity to magnetic fields than traditional coils and can withstand higher vibration levels and impacts. The new ICB series is available in standard and double distance sensing ranges, with nickel-brass housings in long and short barrel lengths. Ice Breaker Used around the world, the Amphibex amphibious excavator helps prevent spring flooding.

B

racing for a possible flood – that’s the worrisome reality of spring in many communities across Canada and around the world. The meltwater can’t move fast enough under the ice or floating ice pieces form ice jams.

Enter the Amphibex, a high-performance amphibious excavator developed by Normrock Industries Inc., founded in 1987 by CEO Norm Grant. For the Terrebonne, Quebecbased company, the first ice-breaking call came in early 1990 when the city was in danger of flooding.

“Terrebonne was in a difficult situation and we were asked if our machine could go on the water and free up the ice,” says Normrock executive vice president (and son of Norm) Jimmy Grant. “It worked well, and the rest is history.”

Since then, the Amphibex has been used to prevent spring floods on the Red River in Manitoba, the Mechako in BC and many others in Quebec. But ice-breaking was not at all the original intent. Rather, the Amphibex was designed to easily handle tasks that a traditional excavator can’t manage.

“The amphibious aspect is what’s needed in restoring waterways, installing water pipelines and submarine cables, cleaning wastewater treatment ponds, controlling vegetation and so on,” says Grant. “The Amphibex is tremendously powerful and maneuverable in these environments, with highly sophisticated positioning devices. Also, the propeller can be raised in shallow waters to protect vegetation and avoid disturbing riverbed sediment.”

Amphibex excavators have been used along the Tigris (Iraq), the Danube (Europe), as well as many other waterways in Canada, the US and Africa. Normrock is about to deliver its 182nd machine to Iraq.

If you guessed that the most critical aspect of an amphibious machine like this one (especially one used around deep icy water) is stability, you’d be right. “We designed the front stabilizers with big ball-shaped floaters around them, which we call ‘outriggers,’” says Grant. “When the excavating arm swings to the side, the balance of the machine changes and the floaters maintain stability. They also permit the excavation arm to handle heavier loads with a wider range of motion.”

The front stabilizers as well as the rear ones (nicknamed ‘spuds’) are also used to lift the Amphibex up for transport to and from the work site. “The spuds are also used to anchor the machine to the bottom when excavating,” Grant notes.

“They can be operated independently and have two degrees of freedom: tilt and telescopic for several depths.”

power with stronger hydraulics, a better reach on the excavating arm and easier overall maintenance. Normrock also improved the electronics and designed several accessories for the excavating arm, such as a rake for invasive plant removal.

Another important accessory is the bucket pump for heavy duty dredging. With pumps placed directly on the excavating bucket, this attachment provides strong pumping pressure over long distances.

The Amphibex 400, designed by Normrock Industries of Terrebonne, Quebec, is an amphibious excavator that, among other tasks, can break up ice flows and prevent spring thaw flooding.

“Instead of suctioning the material from the bottom to the pumps on the dredge, we push the material from the bottom (pump bucket), which means more solid and less water,” says Grant. “It was a challenge to ensure it would handle several different types of materials.” Normrock has also added special features for harsh environments.

In 2005, the company added a larger model. The Amphibex 600 can handle depths of 10 meters and is able to process heavier loads and dredge more material at a faster rate than its predecessor. However, because requests kept coming in for even greater capacity, this year Normrock will unveil its newest amphibian.

“The Amphibex 1000 features two engines, a new hydraulic system, new electronic controls and a new bucket pump that will dredge deeper and pump up to 40,000gal/min,” says Grant.

IFPE 2011 breaks records

ONEXPO-CON/AGG and IFPE 2011, held at the Las Vegas Convention Center, attracted nearly 120,000 registered attendees. The shows were the site of the largest gathering in North America since 2008 for the construction, fluid power, power transmission and motion control industries. In total, there were more than 2,400 exhibitors taking more than 2.34 million net square feet of exhibit space. IFPE was the largest ever, and CONEXPO-CON/AGG’s exhibit space was the second largest in the show’s history.

According to organizers, the mood was positive, despite continued uncertainty in U.S. construction markets and the overall economy. Industry professionals expressed hopeful optimism for a sustained U.S. upturn in the coming months.

At IFPE 2011, the 52nd National Conference on Fluid Power featured a record 114 presentations, and the Innovations Theater offered 14 sessions developed from abstract submissions for the conference. New for 2011 were national conference keynote presentations from leading industry and university researchers, and sessions from the Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power.

Parker hydraulic hybrid technology wins EPA seal of approval The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has placed Parker Hannifin’s RunWise Advanced Series Hybrid Drive technology on the National Clean Diesel Campaign’s Emerging Technologies List. The program promotes innovative technologies by providing funding to develop and evaluate these technologies in the field. According to the company, its RunWise Drive reduces fuel use and emissions by as much as 50 percent depending on the application and duty cycle and is the only drivetrain technology on the list.

Developed and tested with support from the EPA at its National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the technology is in use on refuse vehicles in communities in South Florida. To date, eleven trucks have been purchased by the Cities of Hialeah and Miami as well as Miami Dade County.

According to the company, RunWise Advanced Series Hybrid Drive recovers as much as 70 percent of the energy typically lost during braking. It uses a two-speed hydrostatic drive combined with a mechanical direct drive that allows the vehicle to optimize performance at low and high speeds. Parker is developing further advancements in this technology on advanced bus and terminal tractor platforms.

Who needs a “CRN”?

Hydraulic accumulators sold in Canada require special CRN registration but the rules and requirements to obtain one vary by province.

I

t has often been said that accumulators are the least well understood of all major hydraulic system components.

Even less understood are the requirements for registration of these hydraulic components in Canada.

Accumulators are pressure vessels and, as such, are subject to safety regulations. To be used legally, a pressure vessel must be built to a recognized pressure vessel code. Typically, this is the ASME Code, Sect. VIII Div.1, which is accepted in the USA and Canada, with one notable difference. In Canada, building a pressure vessel to the ASME Code is not sufficient.

There is an additional requirement to register the vessel in the province where it will be installed and obtain a Canadian Registration Number (CRN).

In Canada, public safety lies in the jurisdiction of individual provinces, each of which has its own Safety Act and Safety Regulations that govern public safety. Here’s where the confusion typically enters. How do you go about registering an accumulator, and what exactly is required?

In Canada, we have the CSA B51, Canadian Pressure Vessel and Piping Code, which references standards and requirements for pressure vessels. However, it does not have the force of law until it’s adopted by individual jurisdictions, (i.e. provinces). Interestingly, there is no requirement for provinces to adopt the code in whole. They may adopt any or all portions of it, but experience shows that even the portions adopted are subject to different interpretations.

Two different types of registration As if the variety of requirements from the provinces wasn’t enough, there is often confusion regarding the two different types of registration: Pressure vessel and fitting.

Pressure Vessel: Although there are exceptions, the general rule is that a standard hydraulic accumulator with an inside diameter of more than 6 inches (152mm) must be built to the ASME Code Sect. VIII Div. 1. If the accumulator is manufactured outside of Canada, it must be a “U”-stamped vessel. For each province in which the accumulator will be used, a CRN is required.

To obtain this CRN, a manufacturing drawing along with ASME calculations must be submitted to the individual jurisdictions. Often, a review and stamp from a professional engineer is required on the documents. After the provincial design reviewer approves the submission, a CRN is issued. This is a design approval and allows the manufacturer to build as many accumulators as he likes, as long as it is to the same design.

Fitting: If an accumulator has an inside diameter of 6 inches or less, it falls under the limits of the ASME Code. However, it will still require a CRN in Canada. This vessel will now be registered as a Category “H” fitting. The process is much the same as for the ASME Code vessels, but there is no requirement for a third party inspection. The manufacturer assumes responsibility for the inspection and quality.

Another important difference is that the design approval is only valid for ten years. After this time, the fitting design must be re-registered. This does not affect the end user; they can continue to use the accumulator as long as they like. It is only the manufacturer who is affected. He may continue to build this design for ten years only, before re-registering.

What does all this mean?

If you are designing a hydraulic system or equipment, it’s important to be aware of all registration requirements before you begin specifying products. This is a topic that cannot be covered in a short article. There are many requirements, not only for registration of accumulators, but also of the piping that may connect the gas side of a bank of accumulators.

Accumulators that are used on mobile equipment and in the mining industry are a whole topic unto themselves.

The intent here isn’t to provide answers to all questions related to accumulator registration, but rather to raise awareness of the requirement for it. Your local safety board will be the best resource for specific questions.

For everything that has been written here, there will always be someone who says, “That’s just not true. I have used accumulators in province XYZ, and did not require a CRN or U-stamp, etc.” This may well be true, since there are many regulations, director’s orders, exemptions and interpretations.

However, it is important to inform yourself and not rely on your past experience, or even worse, someone else’s. Otherwise, you may be like the fellow who said that experience was such a hard teacher, because the test came first, and the lesson came after.

CANADA NEEDS

Fluid Power Engineers Few mechanical engineers receive specific education in fluid power and the industry is suffering as a result.

luid Power is a well-established motion control technology that has been integrated across all industries, with numerous and varied highly technical applications. So engineers trained in the design and application of today’s fluid power systems should be easy to come by, right?

Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, there is no such thing as a “fluid power engineer” as a recognized undergraduate degree in Canada. What’s more, a quick look at course offerings from universities across Canada shows that fluid power is not a core course or even a technical elective in a lot of Mechanical Engineering programs. The University of Saskatchewan is the only university in Canada that offers undergraduate and graduate level fluid power courses. What gives?

Regardless of the discipline, engineering is a broad-based education that encompasses a fundamental understanding of the numerous areas of specialization within the discipline, including static and dynamics, strength of materials, fluid mechanics, heat transfer and control systems.

I’m a mechanical engineer working in fluid power, but as a student back in the 1980’s, I had one course in fluid power, which was an elective at my local university. (The course, by the way, is not in their current calendar). However, to be an engineer and work in fluid power requires a fundamental knowledge of fluid power systems and components—certainly more training than can be gained in a one-term course. I really don’t consider myself a fluid power engineer, because I don’t have a degree in mechanical engineering with a fluid power option. In my opinion, this is what is required.

The learning process for most engineers working in fluid power is not through structured multi-year university level courses that focus on the core engineering knowledge mentioned above applied to fluid power. Instead, they are typically “built” at the expense of their employer over a number of years through on the job training. They may receive training through short courses, made available by a fluid power distributor / manufacturer or some colleges. However, most of this education is not necessarily at an engineering level.

When I say engineering level education, I mean that fluid power applications at the “coal face” (distributor level) are often designed with off-the-shelf, pre-engineered components which are incorporated in a circuit to provide a motion conMarch/April | 2011

trol solution. Basic formulas are used for sizing, but very little, if any, dynamic load or circuit efficiency analysis will typically take place. Depending on the distributor/manufacturer, engineers will not be designing fluid power systems.

What’s needed are more fluid power engineers working at the “coal face” level and in the lab. To my mind, there are two good reasons for this. First, fluid power motion control is complicated and, if you have not even had fundament education in the technology, you will most likely choose other solutions that you are more familiar with.

I think this problem has existed for quite some time. Some engineers on the factory floor have equipment with state-ofthe-art fluid power systems that they have received no education on how it works, what constitutes proper operation or what a design enhancement would look like. I’m sure if degreed fluid power engineers were on the market, they would easily find employment, as users or as designers.

The second reason we need more fluid power engineers designing fluid power circuits—and this is critical to the fluid power industry of the future—is to push the envelope of fluid power technology further. It’s simply a numbers game; if we have more mechanical engineers specializing in fluid power then more sophistication and innovation will follow.

Fluid power is a slick motion control solution, but taking it to the next level technologically and searching for more efficiency is not necessarily easy. A critical mass of fluid power engineers is required to incubate and develop the ideas that will drive R&D. This critical mass will also generate the graduate level fluid power engineers who will develop the fluid power systems of the future.

The future of fluid power depends on fluid power curriculum being available for more mechanical engineering students so we can have degreed Fluid Power Engineers. How do we get started? Personally, I’m calling the Mechanical Engineering Department chair at my local university. Hopefully, if the universities receive enough feed back from industry, fluid power specific education may well become the rule rather than the exception.

Up-beat Canadian Fluid Power leaders discuss the rebound, resurging markets and innovation.

The fluid power industry seems to be on the upswing. Is the Canadian market seeing this? If so, in which sectors?

Don McCrudden, National Sales Manager, Festo Canada: My feeling is that clearly it has. Last year was a nice recovery year in Canada and 2011 is a significant increase over 2010. The growth we are experiencing around the world is precedent setting. In Canada, we are seeing recovery in the primary industries, particularly mining, aluminum production and forestry. To a certain extent, we also see recovery in the automotive sector, but not to the same level we experienced a decade ago. Automotive still represents a huge part of our manufacturing sector, and it’s great to see such a substantial rebound. By the time you include food and beverage, and all of the machine builders to support these sectors, it makes for a healthy fluid power market.

Tony Wyszkowski, General Manager, Parker Canada: I would certainly agree. The market is showing a definite positive upswing, mainly related to the resource sector but not limited to that. I’m seeing an improvement in general manufacturing as well. Manufacturing has been in a recession mode for six or seven years. Today, I think manufacturers in Canada have figured out how to be competitive with a stronger Canadian dollar. All sectors across the country are showing strength whether it be mining, oil and gas, transportation or agriculture. Even forestry is starting to show a slow but perceptible uptick. In general, we are fairly upbeat about the Canadian economy for the fluid power industry overall.

Kevin O’Doherty, Sales Manager Hydraulics, Kinecor: The recovery is certainly underway, more so in some areas of the country than others. Oil and gas is doing extremely well for instance, while automotive and pulp and paper are still a little bit down. One area that is experiencing a rapid recovery is the mining sector. Anything related to metals and com-

The recession years were some of the hardest for the industry.

How has the industry changed as a result?

McCrudden - Festo: We did a lot. We looked at increasing efficiencies throughout the organization, oriented toward cost savings and just doing things smarter. For example, we installed a regional contact center in Mississauga where we amalgamated all customer functions into a single point of entry. As a result, efficiencies and customer service actually increased quite a bit.

Our goal now is 80/20, which means that we have to answer 80 percent of all inbound calls in 20 seconds. We also focused on the idea of added value. We really get to understand our customer’s challenges, and meet those challenges with specific customized solutions—in essence, adding value beyond the component sale.

O’Doherty - Kinecor: From our position, we’ve gone after productivity gains and we’ve taken some cost out, as everybody has.

The combination of the two helped us weather the storm. We’ve also changed some of our strategy in the way that we deploy products and some of the business that we participate in. We have been able to do a pretty good job of that.

Wyszkowski - Parker: The structure of industry has changed.

As an example, although not pre-planned, Parker Canada consolidated two divisions in 2009: Fluid Connectors Canada, which sold just fluid connector product, and Motion and Control Canada, which sold hydraulic and automation products. Now, what the customer sees is just one Parker representative as opposed to two or three previously. Apart from consolidations, there is also the changed supply chain. Many suppliers either went out of business or slimmed down significantly. Those that are left

FluidPower: RoundTable are finding it very difficult to turn the taps back on resulting in shortages. Manufacturers like ourselves have tried to figure out our supply chain. Whether we are getting product from around the corner or across the globe, supply chain strength is a key competitive requirement, not just an advantage.

Paeper - Eaton: You are right; the industry went through some tough times in late 2008 and 2009. At Eaton we took quick actions to right-size the business. We also focused on product and market development efforts to be ready for the recovery. We made sure our operations were ready for future growth with continuing infrastructure investments, focused on the high growth regions around the world.

What are some of the misconceptions of fluid power technology that you encounter?

McCrudden - Festo: A misconception I still notice is that people don’t realize what the cost of compressed air is. Consequently, when you walk into most manufacturing facilities, you see quite an opportunity for savings purely through an education of how much things cost.

Investing in higher quality components and systems initially and making sure you have proper preventative maintenance programs in place, may yield much greater returns through energy savings alone, not to mention reduced down time and perhaps increased through-put. There are many things people can do to minimize the waste of compressed air.

O’Doherty - Kinecor: There are a lot of people out there who think it’s an antiquated technology but there is a lot of innovation coming out.

Wyszkowski - Parker: One of them that I find quite a lot out there is that hydraulics is a commodity—that quality is equal across all providers of equipment and machinery. Some might laugh and say, “Of course Parker Hannifin would say that.” But really, one needs to consider total cost of ownership. Too often, we’re driven by that initial purchase price as being the only determinant. But, at the end of the day, the consideration should be in terms of the lifecycle of the product.

Paeper - Eaton: One of the big misconceptions is that hydraulic systems leak and are noisy. That could be true of some older systems. At Eaton, we have developed products that are leak-free, quiet and efficient, like our Snap-To-Connect couplings that are used where leak-free performance is required.

Also, Eaton LifeSense Hose uses smart technology that continuously monitors the condition of the hose to predict when it is close to the end of its life.

Another misconception is that hydraulics is dirty and inefficient. At Eaton, sustainability is at the core of all we do. Are there signs the industry is experiencing a technological resurgence?

McCrudden - Festo: On the pneumatic side, the biggest trend is the marrying of more than one technology, so products that aren’t just pneumatic but electronic/pneumatic or electronic/pneumatic/mechanical. Any combination of the three technologies is common. For example, the combination of a pneumatic cylinder with mechanical bearings. If you roll the clock back 15 years, we didn’t sell one cylinder bearing combination drive. Today, I would guess that 30 percent of our pneumatic drive sales are a combination unit.

O’Doherty - Kinecor: In the hydraulic business, there is a real migration to electronic controls and tying them into industrial Ethernet systems, SCADA systems in plants and engine management systems on mobile equipment. The benefit is that this trend allows for finer control and remote control. Take the Ethernet systems. You don’t necessarily have to send your service technician to the plant. A lot of this stuff you can access on-line.

Wyszkowski - Parker: We are starting to see some very nice technologies come forward. I think green is certainly driving some innovations in the hydraulics world such as hybrid systems, utilizing hydraulics to capture energy that has been

For instance, Parker has this new RunWise Advanced Series Hybrid Drive technology which is used on 11 refuse trucks in service in communities in South Florida with fantastic results—around 50 percent improvements in gas consumption and other savings. The technologies are there, and we are definitely going to see a lot of more of this kind of thing.

The industry did go through the doldrums, but people realized that when you couple hydraulics with electronics you now have all sorts of levels of control that you didn’t have before. The other thing is that as new materials come to the fore, you start finding opportunities for new types of equipment and solutions that previously we weren’t able to achieve, such as power-to-weight ratio savings and various things like that. It’s a great time to be in the industry.

The unit features cycle times of 0.58 seconds including switching and gripping times at a 40mm vertical stroke, a 120mm horizontal stroke and a moving mass of 2 kg. The programmable unit has repeat accuracy of less than 0.01 mm and is designed for a vertical stroke of up to 100mm, a horizontal stroke of 270mm and a moving mass of 3 kg. CoDeSys Embedded Controller Festo has launched a CoDeSys embedded controller for use with its CPX series of multifunctional control terminals. CoDeSys is an IEC 61131-3 compatible programming environment. The CPX-CEC embedded controller is essentially a PLC, but with additional functionality. Powered by a 400 MHz 32-bit processor and 64 MB of memory, the controller features an Ethernet

10/100 Base-T interface for programming and host controller communications, and uses a backplane bus system to communicate with other modules in the CPX terminal. The controller has a cycle time of 1 ms. In addition, it can be configured as a fieldbus slave or as a CAN master for controlling other CANopen devices, such as electric drives. It supports all popular fieldbus protocols, including PROFIBUS, PROFINET, Ethernet/IP, DeviceNet, Modbus TCP, CANopen, CC-Link and EtherCAT. Hydraulics Control Unit Poclain Hydraulics has enhanced its CreepDrive system with the introduction of a control unit integrating all the functions required for the control and monitoring of the system. The CreepDrive is a transmission system designed for vehicles that move rapidly to reach their place of work and drive at very low speeds (between 0 and 5 mph). The system—consisting of hydraulic (motor, pump, valve, etc.) and electronic (computer and sensors) components—is controlled by the driver from the vehicle cab using simple controls. The new control unit is delivered with a cable harness complete with all the connectors required for the smooth installation of the system. The motor incorporates three new features: integrated reversing and proportional valves; a bidirectional motor for remote HIC reversing valves with a shaft seal protector and cast iron cover; and outrigger bearing for slewing, high-vibration and oscillating fan drive applications. With these features, SGM motors can run in both directions to clean radiators of dirt and chaff for diesel fan drive systems, the company says. Values Pressure Reducing Valves Bosch Rexroth introduced its line of directly controlled MHDRE hydraulic pressure reducing valves. Available in three different sizes, the valves apply the electric command values steplessly and largely independent of the inlet pressure level. The MHDRE valves carry a IP69K rating, are capable

of resisting corrosion after 720 hours of salt spray and mist tests and can achieve a service life of at least 10 million load cycles.

The series covers proportional and switching valves in sizes 2 and 4. Standardized mounting cavities allow users to switch flexibly between the two functions. With size 6, Rexroth provides a choice between increasing and decreasing characteristic curve.

Drain Valve Compressor Valve Canada Ltd. recently launched the ‘FilterJet’ electronic drain valve. The FilterJet system incorporates within the valve body, a ball valve and strainer to reduce the maintenance required to service and remove scale or grit particles on any given system. The only maintenance required is to open the ball valve periodically. The full flow would then be directed from a 90-degree position to a straight through direction, which cleans the filter screen of collected contaminants. The FilterJet valve has an inlet fitting that can accommodate ¼-inch through ½-inch connections. A 4mm solenoid valve orifice allows the free flow of contaminants even in excess of ½-inch full bore. LifeSense Hose Eaton Corporation launched its LifeSense hose, a hydraulic hose condition monitoring system that can monitor and track the health of each hose assembly in a hydraulic system.

The system does not estimate failure through arithmetic calculations.

Instead, the LifeSense hose detects when it is nearing the end of its useful life. Then an alert is sent to the user so that the assembly can be replaced to prevent downtime. A single monitoring unit can handle input from multiple hose assemblies. The initial LifeSense hose offering will include -8, -12 and -16 two-wire hose assemblies.
