wedding notes Amy Bielby | EDITOR One of my favourite weddings I attended took place on a beautiful beach in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The bride’s flowing gown blew in the breeze as she walked down the aisle to a wonderful island version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. The groom stood at the altar, under an archway of colourful flowers, waiting for his bride to arrive. It was gorgeous. And hot. Like, really hot. The wedding party and guests made it through the ceremony without melting (barely) and we had an unbelievable day and vacation. It’s amazing how a destination wedding can bring people together. At this particular wedding, I only knew half a dozen people. But by the end of the week, everyone was laughing and hugging as if we had known each other for years. It becomes a bonding experience, being thrown together like that, and it creates a warm, loving atmosphere for the newlyweds. One of the great things about this trip was how easy going it was. The bride and groom didn’t overschedule their guests, which left my husband and I with a night on our own, to have a romantic dinner on the beach. A bunch of us explored the area and found a bar called Yo Yo Mo’s, which was airing the hockey playoffs (the Canucks were playing), so we enjoyed time away from the resort, too. Kudos to my friends, who made everyone feel welcome and at ease. Remember that for your own destination wedding. Yes, it’s your big day, but be considerate of your guests, too. They’ll thank you for it!

NOBODY LIKES A LONG FLIGHT, BUT IT’S WORTH IT IF YOU’RE HEADING TO A DREAMY DESTINATION TO GET MARRIED!

Depending on your location of choice, your travel time could mean the difference between smooth sailing and a panic-stricken plane ride for even the most experienced travellers. Don’t worry – here are some tips to get you through that long flight.

Be comfortable: A 10-hour flight is not the time to wear

Fuel up: Stock up on water and healthy snacks before you

Charge it: If watching movies on your laptop or iPad is going to get you through a long flight, then have all of your tech devices charged at full capacity before you board. Make note of devices that may be forbidden (like cell phones that may or may not catch on fire!).

Try one more time: Wait until just before boarding to use the bathroom. There’s nothing worse than desperately having to go mid-flight and waiting in line to use the facilities on board.

Tune out: Listening to crying children or loud-mouth travellers who have had too much to drink does not make for a good flight. Noise-cancelling headphones do the trick. Our unique details: At the Ismaili ceremony, baby tigers were brought in, and for the Punjabi ceremony, Jason arrived riding on an elephant. We had wishing lanterns, adhering to a Thai tradition, where guests make wishes and send lanterns floating above the ocean.

The ToughesT planning decision: Right before the ceremony was supposed to start, huge raindrops started falling from the sky, almost one at a time. It was beautiful, but it also put our entirely-outdoor wedding in jeopardy. After a few minutes of waiting it out, we decided to roll the dice and stick to the game plan. We are so glad we did because the one raincloud floated away and the rest of the evening was perfect!

overall Feeling:

It was magical. From the flowers by Florum, to the candles, to the incredible food catered by Guidi Lenci, we had a blast and we know our guests did too. It was an unforgettable day surrounded by our most cherished friends and family.

reception took place in the interior courtyard of the castle. We all sat at a continuous, u-shaped table under the stars. It was also Winston’s father’s 80th birthday, so in lieu of a wedding cake, we had a huge birthday cake for him and all sang “Happy Birthday”!

advice For desTinaTion brides: A great planner is crucial. Develop your own sense of style and a theme for your wedding, and stay involved throughout the whole process, but an organized and knowledgeable planner is paramount. Especially if you’re getting married somewhere with a language barrier, a planner who is fully bilingual will ensure your vision isn’t lost in translation. “Soft pink” and “peach” are two very different things, and your planner can avoid any miscommunications. FEW PLACES evoke more romantic imagery than Cape Cod , with its vast, windswept beaches, the fabled Martha’s Vineyard playground for the rich and famous and easy maritime lifestyle. Cape Cod extends from Massachusetts into the Atlantic Ocean like a curled finger beckoning you in. It’s just a two-hour drive from Boston, but light years away from the hustle and bustle of the city. One of its chief advantages for a wedding destination is climate. You can have a beach wedding without the heat of the Caribbean. Even in the dead of July it never goes above 26°C. The so-called shoulder season – May, June, September and October – are the best months to visit, with temperatures hovering around 20°C. Many of the area’s charming inns and four- and five-star resorts are beachfront and offer beach wedding packages. At Ocean Edge Resort in Brewster, for example, guests walk to the ocean along wooden pathway, take the stairs down and switch to flip flops for the ceremony. Or, larger parties can gather on the expansive front lawn, with the Mansion in the background. There’s plenty for guests to do while visiting. Cape Cod is crisscrossed by the 42-km Cape Cod Bike and Rail Trail. The network of wide and mostly flat paths, are an ideal way to get around on wheels or foot. Most hotels and inns have bikes for rent.

GEttING tHERE: Air Canada has regular direct flights to Boston from Toronto and Montreal, Porter flies direct to Boston from Toronto. It’s a 10-hour drive from Toronto.

No trip to the Cape would be complete without a nautical experience. The Cape Cod Lobster Roll Cruise accomplishes this AND also feeds you – as the name suggests – a lobster roll, a delicious maritime specialty that you must have at some point during your visit. (lobsterrollcruises.com) Take a ferry to Martha’s Vineyard from Hyannis or Falmouth, or take a high-speed ferry to Nantucket from Saquatucket Harbor in Harwich (nantucketislandferry.com). Both islands are home to wineries and craft brewers. Fun fact: Jaws and its sequels were filmed on Martha’s Vineyard. On the off chance the weather does turn grey, try your hand at candlepin bowling. Candlepin bowling was invented in the Cape in 1880. The pins are more like cylinders and there are 10, but the balls are smaller, more like a softball. There are dozens of lanes to test your mettle but Ryan Family Amusement has four locations in Buzzards Bay, Falmouth, Hyannis and South Yarmouth. Visit the Beachcomber in Wellfleet for affordable seafood staples. Open from Memorial Day weekend to Labour Day weekend, the original college bar crowd is now giving way to multi-generational gatherings. A perfect spot for a relaxed night during your wedding festivities.

This is one time in your life when packing too much actually comes in handy. Overall feeling: Our wedding was filled with laughter, gorgeous natural lake and mountain scenery, and so many emotional moments. It was such a wonderful relief to be able to finally unwind with all our guests at the reception, and realize that we had all of our loved ones with us living out this fairy tale moment! What yOu WOuld change: It was such a hot day, I wish I had brought a second dress to change into prior to the reception so that I could have been more comfortable and carefree!

favOurite parts Of the day: We wanted a lively and fun outdoor party in a comfortable venue that would allow guests to enjoy the warm summer weather. We wanted our friends and family to feel like they were dancing under the stars, enjoying the breezy summer air and surrounded by beautiful flowers.
