o the relief of many, Boeing announced in April that it wouldn’t appeal the U.S. trade commission ruling to drop a 300% tariff on all Bombardier C Series sales in the U.S. Just 12 months ago, the U.S.-based aerospace behemoth accused the Canadian slim-body airplane maker of accepting government subsidies, thereby allowing it to “dump” its 110 to 130-seat planes on the market at unrealistically low prices.

As motive, Boeing said it saw the Montreal aerospace upstart as another potential Airbus in the making. Decades before, the company said, it kept its collective mouth shut as the French aerospace firm, bolstered by government subsidies, rose from relative obscurity to become a formidable competitor. This time, the company asserted, it wouldn’t make the same mistake.

While Boeing’s challenge did threaten to scuttle a substantial 2016 deal with Delta Air Lines and, thereby, unnerved other potential C Series buyers, its antifair trade tirade also set in motion a cascade of unintended consequences. With bankruptcy and the loss of the entire C Series program looming, Bombardier cut Boeing’s rival, Airbus, a sweetheart deal, essentially gifting a 50.01% controlling interest in the C Series. In Greek tragedy fashion, Boeing’s ardent efforts to subvert prophecy ultimately caused it to happen, in a sense.

Having strengthened its competitor, Boeing has had to get serious in its onagain/off-again relationship with Bombardier’s market rival, Embraer SA. Presumably, Boeing was content with the status quo but now has to lock down a deal with the Brazilian regional jet maker or risk going to market with a less diversified offering.

Finally, Boeing faces a Canadian government, still smarting from watching one of its favorites picked on by an American bully. Throughout the trade dispute, government officials insinuated that Boeing, who had been the clear odds-on bet previously, may be shut out of Canada’s efforts to replace aging CF-18s, a potential CAD$15 to $19 billion contract.

Since then, the rhetoric has softened somewhat. Canada recently renewed Boeing’s $313 million deal to service Canada’s Chinook Helicopters. The company was also allowed to bid on the CF-18 contract although procurement officials say past damage to the Canadian economy will play a roll in the ultimate decision.

In the grand scheme, Boeing may barely notice whatever, if any, retribution Canada brings to bear. After all, the company has been part of Canada’s aerospace industry stretching back to WWII and its Canadian subsidiary remains a major employer, with two Canadian facilities and approximately 1,600 staff. Punishing it harshly may only set off another cascade of consequences.

At the gut level though, simply rolling over sends the wrong message. Boeing says it reserves the right to sue should Canada meddle directly in Bombardier’s fortunes, but aerospace companies, Boeing included, are notorious for the creative ways governments discreetly support their largest players.

As air transparently lifts tons of metal off the ground, maybe Canada should consider a metaphorically similar policy. Airbus and Boeing’s proxy war in the regional jet market is still in its initial ramp up, but helping Bombardier, and its C Series aircraft, live well may be the best revenge.

adillac Canada recently debuted its state-of-the-art Cadillac DPi-V.R race car prototype at the Canadian Auto Show 2018 in Toronto. According to the company, the prototype was designed using elements found in the current line up of Cadillac V-Performance models, especially the CTS-V supersedan.

“Cadillac’s V-Performance production models – the ATS-V and CTS-V – are transforming our brand’s product substance, earning a place among the world’s elite high performance marques,” explained Hossein Hassani, managing director, Cadillac Canada. “The Cadillac DPi-V.R further strengthens our V-Performance portfolio, placing Cadillac into the premier series of sports car racing in North America.”

The race car prototype was developed to perform, via testing in the wind tunnel and engineering development. The design details give the DPi-V.R car its distinctive Cadillac appearance: the sheer, sculptural quality of the body and bold bodyside feature line; V-Performance wheels with Brembo brakes; V-Performance emblems; and a canopy graphic inspired by the Cadillac daylight opening.

According to the company, even small features like cooling vents and the air intake were designed in the studio, the latter in the trapezoidal shape of the Cadillac crest.

The DPi-V.R is equipped with the Rear Camera Mirror first seen on the Cadillac CT6 Sedan and available on current Cadillac CTS, XT5 and Escalade models.

The No. 10 Konica Minolta Cadillac DPi-V.R is driven by the Wayne Taylor Racing team. Wayne Taylor team members and DPi co-drivers, Jordan Taylor and Renger van der Zande, were on hand for its debut. www.gm.ca March/April | 2018

After losing a major U.S. Air Force contract, Héroux-Devtek has announced it will be cutting the workforce at its Longueuil, QC facility by approximately 60 people. Aarabi founded ModiFace 11 years ago after he realized his research into computer vision and facial tracking could be applied to the cosmetics industry, where users could see what they look like with different shades and applications of makeup.

The startup uses live video to track facial features like eyes and lips. Based on those features, it then renders different makeup, hair or skin effects. Aarabi said the company also uses artificial intelligence to “understand both faces and consumers in terms of how they interact and the shades they try on.”

Lubomira Rochet, L’Oréal’s chief digital officer, said in a statement the acquisition of ModiFace will “support the reinvention of the beauty experience around innovative services to help our customers.”

Aarabi will remain as ModiFace’s CEO and the company will continue to be based in Toronto. He explained that 60 of the company’s 70 employees, including researchers and engineers, have a connection to U of T, and that the company plans to tap the university’s vast pool of engineering and computer science talent as it continues to grow under its new owner. www.utoronto.ca modiface.com

uring January’s annual Solidworks World love-in, Dassault Systèmes made what could be perhaps its most important announcement in a decade: Desktop Solidworks is here to stay. This comes following the French company’s attempts to cloud-ify the software since 2007.

During the annual user conference this year, Solidworks CEO Gian Bassi showed a slide in which he heralded a two-pillar strategy: One pillar made of desktop Solidworks, the other online (Figure 1).

“You know how to run your business,” Bassi explained to the approximately 5,500 assembled attendees. “We want to give you choice: To grow your business now [with desktop Solidworks] and to help you for the foreseeable future [with online Solidworks].”

The admission that desktop Solidworks is a pillar was great news for the “millions of [Solidworks] users who happily use it throughout the world” (as Bassi described them), but who had suffered from uncertainty. In 2010, the company shocked its users when it proclaimed ‘Solidworks has to move to the cloud.’ Following the resulting backlash, DS changed it tune from

‘Maybe on the cloud soon’ to ‘On the desktop for maybe for another 5-10 years.’

This year, finally, it settled on ‘Yup, we consider it a pillar.’

The reason possibly for that turnaround is that the second pillar, Online Solidworks, is still relatively weak. It turns out there is no such thing, except the name given to a variety of browser-based programs running on Dassault’s 3Dexperience platform.

Historically, Dassault has failed at cloud-ifying Solidworks and made little headway in linking Solidworks with its 3Dexperience software. Dassault has shipped little, most of which has been rejected by Solidworks users. It’s no surprise, given that 3Dexperience offers users what they don’t want: A different file format (Enovia), a different kernel (CGM), a different user interface (3Dexperience), and a different price – a more expensive, subscription-only price. And, as we’ll see, even the product naming is confusing.

proceeded to ignore Solidworks for the rest of his keynote. Instead, he showed Web-based Dassault applications in the order that users might employ them in their projects. “From dream to doorstep” is how he described deploying the following five apps for designing and making a bracket, from an initial sketch to delivery

by FedEx. The company’s 3DExperience Social Collaboration Services app facilitates the dream stage by collecting all information about a design project, such as scanned-in napkin sketches and third-party parts shared from other systems. It is meant for online collaboration between designers.

The Solidworks 3DExperience PLM Services app is for tracking changes and doing other product lifecycle management tasks.

Solidworks Product Designer is a suite of programs for doing mechanical design (e.g. parts, smart assembly, motion simulation, sheet metal, drawings and BOM) – all running on the 3Dexperience platform (Figure 2). “It is art-to-part and is natively integrated with everything you have seen so far and will see today,” Bassi said. A related program, Solidworks Industrial Designer, was given only a brief mention, while Solidworks Conceptual Designer was ignored.

The Solidworks XDesign app is meant for design on-the-go, running in WebGLcompatible browsers specifically on tablets and laptops. It offers design, mass reduction and collaborative task assignment. It has Design Guidance, in that users specify connection points and force conditions, and then XDesign suggests a design. It was first introduced in 2016, but rollout has been delayed; the xdesign. solidworks.com web page still only hosts a feel-good video and the beta signup form.

3DExperience Marketplace Make is the final stage, the doorstep. This app is for finding contract manufacturers certified

by Dassault. You specify the materials for manufacturing your 3D model, get a fixedcost price and a delivery date. “We want to become the Amazon for engineers for all over the world,” Bassi proclaimed.

Bassi’s message was clear. All the design work he demo’ed using only online apps strongly suggests Dassault still aims to convert desktop Solidworks users for the recurring income and to eliminate the expense of developing in parallel an incompatible MCAD program.

What Solidworks users want to know Solidworks 2018 launched last October but, just three months later, Dassault is already showing what it might add to Solidworks 2019. At SSW 2018, Solidworks employees demo’ed an impressive list of functions that might (or might not) make it into the next release.

Perhaps the most interesting new feature is the ability to convert hand-made sketches to features automatically. Solidworks already recognizes hand-drawn lines, circles and arcs, but 2019 could add

editable splines and slot sketches. Related to this, markups (notes and simple 2D sketches) can be drawn with touch screens on top of 3D models, and then saved with the drawing (Figure 3).

Chamfers and fillets can be partial and their length can be adjusted by distance, a percentage, a reference or by dragging handles to specify the starting and ending points.

Three-D parametric textures can be applied to solid models as a single part.

The new Texturize Bodies command converts images to features.

The Surface Dial (from Microsoft) will be supported for actions like panning, zooming, rotating and accessing common commands. It looked to me like a 2D version of the 3dconnexion mouse.

Defeaturing is useful for making expansive models smaller (thereby increasing performance), for reducing over-

whelming details in 2D drawings and for hiding intellectual property from contractors. When an assembly is defeatured, Solidworks creates a “silhouette” of the model that lacks minor features, like fillets and unnecessary holes. In 2019, users may have the option to defeature an entire model, individual parts or specific bodies – such as turning a motor into a cylinder, but leaving the gearbox fully detailed.

Related to defeaturing is saving models as multi-body parts, which are more compact; in 2019, this is improved by being able to specify which details to keep. Even better, the full mass properties can be retained for these streamlined bodies. All external references can be removed with a single click.

Also in the interest in reducing detail, de-noising technology by Nvidia speeds up renderings by up to 10x by eliminating visual aspects that are unnecessary to rendered scenes.

A hyped-up feature in MCAD these days is the topology study, which optimizes mesh shapes based on stress levels, factors of safety and connection points.

The result is an organic-looking shape that sheds all material not needed for strength or connections (Figure 4).

Other CAD packages call this “generative design.” The resulting organic shapes are usually rather ugly, so a new slicing tool in SW 2019 will apply one or more planes, from which sketches are derived. You use the 2D sketches to define a new smoothly-shaped 3D part that mimics the organic shape, or else references it to other features.

When it comes to organizing 3D models, SW 2019 will group mates by status, so that the same ones are shown together in the history tree. This is useful for grouping mates with errors, as well as ones that are over-constrained, solved, suppressed or inactive.

Finally, 3D models will be exported in a virtual reality format for viewing with the eDrawing viewer and VR goggles.

Solidworks Futurama For the future, Bassi emphasized that Solidworks will benefit from more integration and automation – where more and more functions, especially simulation, are integrated into the core Solidwww.design-engineering.com

works and 3Dexperience programs. Artificial intelligence will take over some tasks, such as Design Guidance.

Dassault is also working on IoT (Internet of Things) by simulating the electrical-mechanical design process through a cloud-based add-on for Solidworks, created by third party developer, Seebo (Figure 5).

“IoT is making product design way more complicated,” admitted Seebo co-founder, Lio Akavia. Even though “75% of IoT projects fail,” he said, IoT is seen as useful for predictive maintenance and remote monitoring. To improve the odds, Seebo reads the Solidworks file and then does much of the IoT design work semi-automatically.

As another example of the future, tech startup, Meta Co., gave a live demo of its augmented reality hardware. On the Solidworks World stage, a four-sensor visor displayed the design environment.

Available Solidworks models were placed on virtual shelves to the right, a history tree was at the upper left (in the blue frame), and model states and animated models are gathered around the bottom of the stage on which the model sat. The model can be scaled (such as between small and 1:1) and exploded into parts.

And so it was that the 5,500 users who trekked to Solidworks World were relieved to see Solidworks staff showing off a string of remarkable functions for the 2019 release – some brand-new, others copied from competitor MCAD programs.

This is, after all, the software upon which they depend for their livelihood.

Dassault, however, wishes that the millions of Solidworks users would finally see the light and switch. The problem for Dassault is that none of the apps demo’ed is available or even has a price attached. As all traditional CAD vendors have learned to their chagrin, getting 3D design software to run efficiently in the cloud is really difficult. In the meantime, desktop CAD thrives.

Solidworks 2019 goes into beta in the second half of this year, and will ship in the fall. Solidworks World 2019 will be held February 10-13, 2019 in Dallas, Texas.

or more than 50 years, Bell’s 206 JetRanger, and its variants, dominated the single engine helicopter market. Police departments, search and rescue crews, TV news teams, tourist sightseeing operators and civilian pilots praised the ubiquitous aircraft for its mission flexibility, unparalleled safety record and low operating and maintenance costs.

In 2009, however, the subsidiary of U.S.-based aerospace, defence and security firm, Textron Inc., opted to take the popular 206 essentially out of producMarch/April | 2018

tion. But, just three years after the last 206B-3 rolled out of its Mirabel, Quebec plant, Bell looked to repeat its success with the 505 Jet Ranger X. This time around, its aircraft would be up against competitors who took advantage of the 206’s exit. To reestablish its market dominance, the company knew it would have to quickly modernize the virtues of its legendary helicopter in record time.

Borrowing only a few elements from the 206L, Bell bills the 505 as a “clean sheet” design. Featuring a Safran Arrius 2R engine and Garmin G1000H avion-

ics, this five-seat, two-blade, short light single (SLS) helicopter is one of the most technologically advanced commercial helicopters on the market. Like its predecessor, Bell wanted the 505 to maintain the 206’s reputation as light, safe and inexpensive to operate. To do that, Bell would have to control accessory costs, one of a helicopter’s most pricey operating expenses.

For the 505’s emergency float system (EFS) – which helps a helicopter stay afloat during an emergency water landing – Bell tapped Hawkesbury, Ontariobased DART Aerospace, to design the EFS on an aggressive schedule to meet early-2018 deliveries.

CoverStory 21 tively with Bell to install the float system,” explains Pablo Bravo, Director of Engineering for the San Diego Facility at DART Aerospace. “Going into the kick-off meeting, we had already done a lot of work on the flotation design and systems integration with data we had been given from Bell. We tried to do our best to frontload the project with resources to make sure that, if there were any risks down the line, we would have enough time to react.”

Tri-Bag System Initially, DART pursued a simple and conventional cylindrical design for the float system. However, as the design process progressed, the firm’s engineering team found that the float needed to adapt to account for the helicopter’s envelope size, centre of gravity, maximum gross weight and geometry, all while meeting strict performance parameters.

The typical design of this accessory includes several cylindrical floats affixed to the forward and mid-section of a helicopter’s existing skidtubes. The floats are inflated by pulling the inflation lever, which pumps compressed helium through hoses routed to each float. With a single cylindrical float system, however, the centre of buoyancy is right in the middle of the float, making it fairly static.

Instead, the DART team looked to their patented Tri-Bag Float system. In place of a single cylindrical float, this system

uses three inflatable cylindrical “bags” stacked together to act as one. The float located furthest outboard is larger relative to the inner float, which shifts the centre of buoyancy outboard and helps stabilize the helicopter. The advantage to this system, Bravo says, is that it can be adjusted to shift the centre of buoyancy in relation to a helicopter’s high centre of gravity.

Once an issue with any aspect of the float design was identified, the team was able to turn around the new design in a matter of weeks. Within six weeks from that, they were running full scale tests with the new design.

In fact, the EFS project’s greatest success, DART says, may have been the ambitious timeline to certification. The partnership was initially announced at the Heli-Expo in March 2017 with the expectation that certification would occur by the first quarter of 2018. Bell and DART Aerospace successfully secured STC approval from Transport Canada for the 505 EFS, within the original project schedule.

“DART’s on-time delivery for this project was impressive,” says LaShan Bonaparte, 505 Jet Ranger X Program Manager at Bell Helicopter Textron.

“There was great teamwork between both teams to get this kit delivered in a timely fashion allowing Bell to meet its customer commitments.”

Bell Helicopter delivered its first Bell 505 Jet Ranger X to Chandler, Arizonabased Pylon Aviation in March of last year at the Helicopter Association International’s 2017 HAI Heli-Expo in Dallas.

One short year later, Bell has already secured 20 certifications, received more than 400 letters of intent and landed significant sales orders the Jet Ranger X, which has become the top seller of its commercial aircraft line-up.

“I’m pleasantly surprised,” Bravo says, “at how easily and quickly we were able to adapt to some of the design challenges on both the DART and Bell side to get this project up and running.”

BOUTIQUE Titan Innovative Designs’ Bryce Borgel strikes a balance between design and function with his design firm.

ith a diverse background in the oil & gas industry, structural steel and tool & die, Bryce Borgel opted to put his design and manufacturing skills to good use. In 2014, while working on his uncle’s seed farm, Borgel was struck with the idea to start his own design firm in the Edmonton, AB area.

What is your background and how did Titan Innovative Designs get started?

I initially began as a journeyman machinist in the oil and gas industry eventually moving to assembly tech in the tool making industry. I then became shop foreman, training workers and repairing oil field tools in Saudi Arabia. To finish my apprenticeship, I returned home and worked at a structural steel company.

Afterwards, I returned to NAIT in Edmonton for my mechanical engineering tech diploma, specializing in manufacturing. When I launched Titan Innovate Designs in 2014, I implemented a lot of what I learned from the oil fields, namely that I’ll take on any job, learn the best way to do it and properly execute the project. Right now, Titan is a team of four people.

In addition to myself, we have two industrial designers and a mechanical engineer.

What’s the “sweet spot” for Titan Innovative Design?

I like to use the term “manufacturing boutique” when describing the company. Basically, we can do anything in-house. We can take the load off product design companies by managing their design and manufacturing so they can focus on sales and develop new ideas.

The majority of our work is in product design, but about 20 percent of our business is in the architectural industry, which makes us unique. However, our “sweet spot” is with more traditional manufacturing companies. We usually take on 5-10 projects at a time. For being a small company, we can actually be quite nimble bringing products to market.

Do you subscribe to any particular design philosophy?

I try to put more emphasis on function than style. At the end of the day, however, products still need to sell and stir up some emotion in the consumer.

To do any product design, an ideal Titan employee would have an industrial design background for artistic ability. I find that engineers, myself included, are often analytical – we think in straight lines – and that makes it hard for us to think outside the box. When we work with an industrial designer, we can really get into organic shapes and making things look good or pleasing to the eye.

What is your firm’s design process?

Usually clients come to us with an idea. We sit down with them and explore the scope of the project. Our industrial designers will freehand draw concept and custom rendering sketches for clients to get a feel for the design.

We will then take all of the ideas, put them into a formalized sketch and work through project logistics to determine feasibility. We then move to the engineering and 3D modelling, source materials and parts and do a full 3D representation.

required to best develop the product. We try to do three rounds of changes. Through all this, we determine the ideal process for manufacturing because that really dictates the design process.

Small batch prototyping is the next phase. I work with local suppliers and companies in Canada, establishing a network where we can do concepts and designs, engineering, prototyping, small batch manufacturing, manufacturing, packaging and marketing and full patent, all within the Edmonton area.

What are some recent notable projects?

I started off wanting to do a lot of 3D printing and design. It has evolved from 3D printing to design to product development.

We have now brought one product to market, the Beadscope 360, a caulking gun nozzle accessory.

Titan was involved from concept to distribution of the Beadscope 360. The client was looking for a design where the nozzle could rotate a complete 360 degrees around the gun and still apply parallel to the gun. The nozzle had to be big enough to move enough material (silicon) to make it appealing to contractors.

We designed the tool to fit injection molding and used Solidworks to do some test samples to figure out and study the mechanics of the tool with rough aesthetics.

Which projects are you particularly proud of?

I’m really proud of all of them. But if I had to pick one, it’s Tezyzy, a construction tool. With these next-gen tools, consumers will be able to do steel stud framing with any gauge thickness and still be on center at 16 inches or 24 inches with our extension.

The client wanted a premium, high-quality construction tool. Sheet metal fabrication was the best option. The tool was designed with a high visibility color, weight and feel from an aluminum frame and placement of the magnets that makes it unique and ideal for construction framing projects. We unveiled the next-gen tool line at the INTEX EXPO in Florida at the end of March.

We believe in strong partnerships when designing and bringing products to market and I would like to acknowledge Murray Chase and his company for his help with Tezyzy.

What is one of the challenges in working in Edmonton?

In Edmonton, one of the big challenges is with the product verticals. Right now, oil and gas is so chaotic, there have been a lot of companies that have had to close. Everyone is trying to find a new vertical or new product to diversify outside of oil and gas.

Seeing this has allowed us to be more diversified. The biggest thing for us is just not following oil and gas but being open to

BALL SCREW DRUNKENNESS

In miniature applications, assuring ball screw accuracy requires more than relying solely on catalogue specifications.

uided by ISO, DIN & JIS industrial standards, many design engineers broadly define lead accuracy of ball screws only in terms of error accumulated over 300mm (V300) but often overlook the value of measuring or controlling lead accuracy per revolution (V2π).

Often referred to as ball screw drunkenness, because of the hard-to-predict wobble it introduces into ball screw operation, lead accuracy per revolution is emerging as a critical parameter in miniature screw applications where the overall travel length is less than 300mm.

Many engineers improperly assume that the V2π error is insignificant in relation to the overall lead accuracy, V300, and therefore ignore the error when designing a ball screw into an application.

As shown in Table 1, the lead error per revolution for a typical P5 screw can be 8µm or equal to 1/3 of the allowable lead error in 300mm (23µm).

can be challenging, even for the manufacturer, as expensive and specialized analysis equipment is necessary but not commonly available. Therefore, many manufacturers rely on manual, individual measurements versus dynamic, continuous measurements that measure and record 100% positional accuracy throughout full travel. For example, a Ø12mm ball screw with a 2mm lead has 150 pitches over 300mm and may require more than 600 measurements

to accurately portray the screw characteristics.

Therefore, when some manufacturers receive requests for assemblies for precision applications with strokes of less than 300mm, they typically manufacture a screw with the V300 accuracy graded in a longer screw and deliver the customer a short segment that falls within their requirement.

As an example, if the customer specifies a P5 (23µm/300mm) screw with 125mm of travel, the manufacturer might start with a two-meter length of P5 screw and cut off a 250mm section to machine.

That gives the customer what they asked for but may not address the actual performance parameters that impact the critical motion requirements of the application. The result could be costly rework and delays in the OEM’s ability to meet their customers’ requirements.

Consider the case of a medical fluid pump manufacturer who had specified P5 accuracy and 150mm of travel length for a new medical device. Because they aren’t screw experts, they only specified a lead accuracy of 23µm/300mm in their specification document. Although the pump manufacturer had no way of independently measuring screw accuracy, they were able to measure fluid dispersion dynamically, correlate this data to the screw accuracy and ultimately reject standard screw product that met the original requested accuracy.

Specifically designed miniature ball screws, like these by Thomson Industries, eliminate ball screw drunkenness due to the company’s dedicated measurement device that grades screw accuracy per international standards.

Specifying accumulated error over 300mm was ultimately determined to be irrelevant for this application and a customized specification was necessary to achieve desired performance.

By correlating the dynamic fluid dispersion data with the dynamic screw performance, linear component manufacturer, Thomson Industries, was able to explicitly identify screw characteristics that negatively impacted pump performance. This data was then used to revise the screw specifications and eliminate undesired error from the system.

Ball screws in context The solution to accounting for ball screw drunkenness, of course, is to specify product with an awareness of the full application context. ISO/DIN/JIS specifications are a good place to begin product understanding, but the process should not end there. Lead accuracy is only one part of the overall story and must be interpreted within the context of other parameters. In addition to the desired lead accuracy of the application and related drunkenness, the context includes end machining, journal runout, straightness and geometric tolerances of the overall system.

Although most of the discussion is typically focused on the screw performance in terms of positional accuracy, the corresponding ball nut further complicates the analysis. Because the nut is the interface between the screw and the load, the drunkenness effect can be filtered or amplified by the nut’s interaction with multiple pitches of the screw. Most ball nuts have 3-10 loaded turns of ball bearings and, therefore, are within contact with multiple threads on the screw simultaneously. Hence, it is vital to measure the accuracy using a single gauge ball to accurately map a screw.

For applications requiring more than 300mm of travel length, this may not be a problem. It becomes increasingly critical, however, when in context of today’s trend toward miniature products. Miniature ball screws – with 1, 2 or 3mm leads in full stroke ranges of 100 or 200mm – are not uncommon, and specifying cumulative error over 300mm is all but meaningless.

Factoring in production costs Accurate, full context specifications can also impact the cost of production and the price. Thread rolling screws is a far less expensive production process than thread grinding, and the requirement of the V300 parameter is a deciding factor in selecting the manufacturing method. The improvement of modern thread rolling equipment can produce V300 values typical of P3 screws.

Controlling drunkenness with the rolling process, however, is much more complicated and typically requires achieving a lead accuracy one level better than specified (i.e. a P3 screw may be specified in place of a P5). Alternatively, customers can always choose the traditional thread grinding process to improve drunkenness, which can increase the price by 5-10 times over the rolled version.

Another solution for a precision application would entail specifying V300 accuracy for a short stroke application, buying a less expensive rolled product and then using software to reach the required precision. Although lead error may wobble throughout the stroke, this error is repeatable and can be mapped and corrected by software.

Because the mapping process itself takes time and must be supported by rotary encoders, optical monitoring or other secondary feedback solutions, the total solution may be more expensive to implement. Software and hardware solutions can also be combined in highprecision applications to provide the most accurate systems.

Managing ball screw drunkenness in miniature applications will require a concerted effort by end users, manufacturers and standards groups. End users must

recognize that the stated catalogue specifications of the ball screw are only one factor and must draw on the resources of their suppliers to help them match the product that will meet their needs most cost effectively.

The right supplier will provide the resources and encouragement to make it possible for their customers to understand and identify what they actually require

Video Cameras Basler unveiled eight ace U models with the Global Shutter CMOS sensors IMX287 and IMX273 from Sony’s Pregius line.

The cameras offer VGA and 1.6 megapixel resolutions and deliver up to 520 frames per second. The IMX273 sensor has a pixel size of 3.45µm while the IMX287 sensor has an edge length of 6.9µm. Both sensors have the Ultra Short Exposure Time feature, which allows exposure times of up to one microsecond (1µs).

Over the summer, for example, Festo launched its VTEM Motion Terminal, a series of programmable pneumatic valves and manifold that can be configured and controlled via smartphone-like apps. The company also unveiled its CPX-IoT Gateway, which connects field-level, Industry 4.0-ready components, like the Motion Terminal, to the Festo Cloud service via an OPC UA interface. Going forward, Festo says it will design more of its components to acquire and pre-sort data for analysis.

According to the National Fluid Power Association (NFPA), the industry experienced a healthy uptick in activity at the beginning of the year. Shipments of fluid power products for January 2018, for example, increased 15.4% compared to January 2017, and increased 17.2% when compared to the previous month. Similarly, mobile hydraulic, industrial hydraulic and pneumatic shipments increased in January 2018 when compared to January 2017 as well as compared to December 2017. This data is based on collected sales data from more than 85 manufacturers of fluid power products as part of the NFPA’s Confidential Shipment Statistics (CSS) program. www.nfpa.com

HYDRAULICS Machine builder expands energy-saving hydraulic unit into stand-alone OEM venture.

JC Engineering is a custom machine tool builder in Huntington Beach, California, specializing in metal-spinning machines for such applications as sheet spinning, flow forming, wheel spinning and rotary forging. The company’s machines are found worldwide, producing end products such as car wheels, aircraft engine housings, spacecraft fuel tanks and welding gas cylinders.

MJC machines typically utilize very large volumes of hydraulic power in operation.

About three years ago, MJC President Carl Lorentzen began investigating the configuration of the hydraulic units used on his company’s machinery. Lorentzen had a great interest in servo-pump technology, having read about its application in other industrial uses such as injection molding machines, extruders, cranes, lifts and other materials handling equipment.

“We had looked at a variety of ways to improve the energy efficiency of our machines,” Lorentzen says. “Being a California company, there are substantial incentives offered here for documented energy savings in machine building and operations. Plus, I felt it was simply the right course of action to do our part in protecting natural resources.”

He also cited a recent incident, where MJC changed insurance carriers and, as part of the company safety audit, sound levels were tested and the hydraulic power units were a concern. Lastly, as MJC sells its machines to premier OEMs around the world, issues involving big data capture, IIoT and Industry 4.0 integration were surfacing from customers.

All these factors caused a “light bulb moment” for the builder. MJC began serious investigation into the application

of servo-pump technology to replace the constant motor operation on the main hydraulic unit of the machines, in a concerted effort to reduce energy consumption, noise and, owing to the smaller hydraulic reservoirs needed, the machine footprint. These definable upsides for MJC machine design and the company’s marketing of its equipment caused considerable excitement for Lorentzen.

“We are fortunate to have on our staff an amazing group of electrical, hydraulic, controls and mechanical engineering talents,” he says. “All these engineers had the same reaction I did, and we began to rethink our hydraulic power units from the ground up.”

Lorentzen also turned to Siemens, a longtime supplier, for further assistance.

A team led by Chris Britton, the Siemens sales manager for the region, assisted with various application engineering studies, energy and controls testing to affect the optimum design, all while working in concert with the MJC team.

A further advantage quickly emerged, as the Green Hydraulic Power unit (GHP) began to take shape. Little or no external cooling was required to dissipate the ambient heat of the unit.

From the OEM perspective, MJC benefitted from the conceptualization, engineering and commissioning tools offered by Siemens in the build-up of the GHP units. Sizer, for example, orchestrated the integrated data across the entire platform of drives technology, enabling the MJC engineering team to match the most suitable products to the specific requirements of the end user applications. This enabled a drastic reduction in the engineering time on subsequent unit designs. MCAD likewise enabled the importing of all motor specifications to match the requirements of each job.

Finally, for the end-user, the Siemens TIA Portal provides faster commissioning, increases productivity and facilitates comprehensive data capture. This benefits both operations/ maintenance personnel and the integration of the data into a “digital factory” mode, as the system’s condition monitoring and diagnostics can reside in the cloud or otherwise be networked to a controls communication stream. Depending on the drives technology selected, it’s also possible for the end user to perform online configuration of the drives via their web server.

GKN Aerospace in Orangeburg, South Carolina was the first customer for whom an entirely new MJC spinforming machine was built, utilizing a complete, and now duly named, Green Hydraulic Power unit. MJC’s Vice-President, Per Carlson, and his hydraulic engineer, Jerry Wang, designed the unit.

design,” he adds. “It quickly became clear to us we had a real gem here, as GHP can be used as an OE component or retrofitted onto an existing piece of machinery in the field. That includes practically every machine we’ve built ourselves.”

More than a dozen MJC machines with GHP units have been built and installed to date with no issues reported.

Lorentzen cites the extended warranty on the Siemens components, which constitute the majority of those used on the GHP, as a further upside.

“We had a very dynamic interaction with the Siemens engineering team to make this unit come alive,” Machuca adds. “We frankly didn’t know what to expect at the outset, but the results have been very pleasing, so far. And we’ve only just begun.”

Further options under development for GHP include Siemens Scalance wireless control, kW torque setpoint on pressure, fail-safe compatibility, custom touchscreen and other monitoring and maintenance tools for operation and unit data transmission in an Industry 4.0 environment, over a Profinet industrial Ethernet protocol.

When equipped with the high-level Safety Integrated PLC from Siemens and other required components, the GHP is suitable for severe environments such as oil rigs, chemical processing equipment and other challenging work environment applications.

Currently, machines with this green hydraulic unit are in operation at industry giants like Meritor, SpaceX, Worthington and multiple plants of GKN Aerospace.

Most have been in use for six months to a year without performance issues.

“We can say with high certainty our customers are experiencing up to 90% energy savings, plus the quieter operation and reduced carbon footprint as additional positives,” Lorentzen states. “I’m certainly glad I read what others were doing with servo-pump technology, as it’s made a big and very positive impact on our company.”

EVENTFUL YEAR CFPA regional events for 2018 promise something for everyone.

e at the Canadian Fluid Power Association pride ourselves chiefly in two ways. The first is our passion for growing the fluid power industry within Canada, which involves education, promotion, economic insight, industry relations and career growth. The other point of pride is our epic association events; we are known for our engaging, entertaining and educational meetings and occasions.

I’d like to formally invite you to make the scene at one or all our engaging association events. Spread evenly through the year, these events have something to offer everyone in our unique industry. Although our Annual General Meeting and Golf Tournament typically experience the largest attendance draw, we have more to offer as well. I’ll take this time to share our event calendar with you, organized chronologically.

Not including board of director’s meetings, our next event is the Western Regional Meeting for product specialists, managers and senior executives.

Following a CFPA update presentation and a networking lunch, the meeting will kick off with a presentation by Ian Miller of Motion Canada on the finer points of Industry 4.0, including the Industrial Internet of Things. After a short break, Ashley Harrison, also of Motion Canada, will provide insight on the challenging topic of Dealing with a New Generation of Fluid Power Professionals. To round out the afternoon, David Gray explores Energy Trends, Threats and Opportunities.

The last presentation shifts into a round table general discussion which includes your favourite cocktail, and then the day is topped off by a remarkable dinner. Our venue this year is the Sandman Edmonton South hotel. As of this writing, the number of pre-registrants already exceeds our previous record of attendees. Mark your calendar for April 26th and sign up on our website while there is still space.

Up next will be our famous Fluid Power Challenge, which has been so successful in Canada it was adopted by the NFPA and has grown into one of the premiere fluid power events in North America. Our event will take place on May 10th at North Kipling Junior Middle School in Toronto, with the workshop event taking place four weeks prior on April 19th.

DE: From your company’s perspective, how is the Canadian fluid power market doing this year?

Caryes Allan, Vice President, Higginson Equipment Inc: As Vice Chair of the Canadian Fluid Power Association (CFPA), I do hear a lot of feedback from many of the big players in our industry; most of them are growing and optimistic about 2018.

From Higginson’s point of view, we have had the best start in years in 2018, especially with our air cylinders for the trucking industry. We’ve never seen such a huge increase for the start of the year and it’s remained consistent.

Kevin O’Doherty, District Manager, SunSource: We’re very optimistic that 2018 will continue in the same vein as 2017 which was a strong year on both sides of the border. In Canada, we don’t have as broad a geographic footprint as we do in the U.S., so we don’t always get the benefits of the booming markets.

We are a bit more restricted to business west of Manitoba. But in Ontario, all three lines of our business (industrial, mobile and after-market) performed well in 2017. Our first quarter suggests 2018 will be a continuation of that. I think Canada is going through a natural resource expansion presently, which is supporting our mobile and industrial segments plus growth in the auto parts sector.

Frank Pirri, Sales and Product Manager, Flodraulic: For us, 2018 has been fairly busy and it hasn’t slowed down. It may have to do with our customer base, which is mainly small to medium sized OEMs in the mobile market. They’ve seen a lot of new projects come on-line recently. We’ve even seen some growth in the west, particularly Alberta. It may also have to due with the fact that we focus on integration. We don’t just provide a valve or a pump in a box but the whole system that includes the hydraulics, electronics and controls. Customers, March/April | 2018

believe the fluid power industry is on the radar or will be affected. I think President Trump has other plans. I can say that we have seen a consistent increase in border clearance delays, both importing and exporting, than in previous years.

So it’s a concern if that will continue.

Pirri – Flodraulic: So far, everybody has kept their marching boots on and soldiered on but things can turn on a dime. The market was shaken up a bit a couple of months ago when talks about NAFTA came up and then about steel tariffs. Since then, things seem to have gone back to where they were, for the time being at least. If the U.S. is intent on becoming isolationist, that's a concern since I could see that negatively affecting Canada. For those of our customers who are OEMs, most of their sales are in the U.S. For now, there isn’t much concern, but things can change rapidly.

O’Doherty – SunSource: We have a neutral position on NAFTA. It’s an ongoing discussion that could stretch out for some time, so we don’t see it having an immediate impact on us as a company. Regionally, however, I think it will impact certain businesses or areas of Canada that are market specific, like soft wood lumber. So it hasn’t impacted demand yet, in that their production remains strong, but it may be affecting

their name or that designation on their resume, employers and clients are assured that this person knows what they’re doing. Since there are only a few select colleges that offer fluid power courses, International Fluid Power Society (IFPS) certification is particularly important for graduates and the younger generation entering the industry. While the IFPS has chapters throughout the U.S., there aren’t any in Canada. So, we at the CFPA, are currently working with both organizations to open the first IFPS Canadian chapter in Ontario, probably around October/November 2018.

Pirri – Flodraulic: There are licensed electricians and certified mechanics but, for the fluid power industry, there hasn’t always been something like that. I’ve been a certified fluid power specialist since 1994, but since then, the IFPS has really ramped up certification for fluid power. It promotes confidence with the end customer so they know sales people and technicians are accredited and fluent in the technology. It’s like dealing with a licensed electrician; there’s a comfort level in that the person you’re talking to is knowledgeable of the product and its application to make the end customer’s product more efficient.

O’Doherty – SunSource: Accreditation lends credibility, especially to the technicians and the younger people coming into the industry. Fluid power isn’t a recognized trade or a licensed profession like you’d have with an electrician or an engineer. It’s also a diverse subject with a broad range of technologies lumped under the fluid power name. So the accreditation the CFPA and IFPS are working on will give credibility to those in the industry and set a standard for a base level of knowledge customers, vendors and employers can rely on.

It used to be that students could get a degree to become a Certified Engineering Technologist with a specialty in fluid power. Now, these programs have changed, which has prompted companies to increase their in-house training.

DE: How does your company cope with the challenge of finding qualified job applicants?

Allan – Higginson: At Higginson, we hire based on company culture, first. All of our hires go through a team “fit” interview and then we test them on their skills. From there, we train internally, send employees to school and promote from within.

Obviously, our senior position require a certain amount of experience in the industry but in general we focus on whether job applicants will mesh well with our company culture.

Pirri – Flodraulic: Part of the challenge stems from the fact that the community colleges no longer provide fluid power specific programs. Every year, Flodraulic sponsors a student at Centennial College, but none of those students have said they plan to go into fluid power. They typically like electronics, robotics or something else. Fluid power is everywhere around us but it still isn’t a well-known technology and so doesn’t have the same appeal. Beyond searching LinkedIn and other common strategies, we promote internally and invest in entry-level employees who are a good fit. Also, we’ve hired a number of students through our college and university co-op programs. Where we’ve had the most success is in our electronics group. A lot of the students who get hired there inevitably cross over into our electro-hydraulics group.

O’Doherty – SunSource: It’s easy to find people. Finding people who are immediately qualified for the positions that need filling today is the real challenge. The strategy most of us have is to find people who you can run through an internal development program. As an example, we are always out recruiting students from various colleges and universities and run them through SunSource University. It’s a broad range of disciplines that we run students through over two to three years. The disconnect is that there appears to be more jobs in fluid power right now than there are people who have the base qualifications to fill them.

Hydraulic Actuators

Bimba launched its Compact Hydraulic series of actuators, offered in two series: Medium (CMH) and High Pressure (CHH).

The CMH offers pressures up to 2030 PSI (140 Bar) whereas the CHH offers pressures up to 3000 PSI (206 Bar). Both series feature extended cylinder life through numerous standard features, including a hard-chrome plated steel piston rod that reduces wear on the rod wiper and seal. The CMH can provide an optional switch slot to easily integrate position sensing without compromising the space-saving design. Accumulator Bladders

Parker Hannifin has launched a range of bladders for hydraulic accumulators installed in nuclear applications.

The N1 Bladder Mix is currently the only bladder material available that meets the PMUC standard for nuclear applications. Offering a maximum working pressure of 300 Bar, the N1 Bladder has an operating temperature range of -25° to +175°C. Low levels of sulphur and halogenous content (less than 200 ppm each) have enabled the N1 Bladder Mix to meet nuclear application requirements. The product also features high chemical compatibility, making it suitable to use with borated water or other common nuclear fluids. The N1 Bladder Mix has been made available for 0.5 litre to 575 litre bladder accumulators. www.parker.com

Enerpac introduced its DuroTech Series of airdriven power units.

The series offers a dual ram pump with a steel reservoir and protective steel shroud. According to the company, the unit’s dual ram pump action offers high-oil capacity and automatic pressure control. Additionally, it requires no air lubrication, runs cool and has reduced noise levels. Additional features include a four-station DO3 manifold with cover plates; an air filter/ regulator with built-in air pressure gauge; an 8-gallon all metal reservoir and an oil level sight glass. www.enerpac.com

Venturi Valves

Enerpac introduced Venturi valves that draw the oil from the cylinder and back to the pump’s reservoir at a much faster rate. Venturi valves are available in both manual and electric configurations. Enerpac also offers retrofit kits for field installation on existing pumps for manual valves and solenoid operated valves.

Venturi valves are designed to improve the efficiency of high tonnage cylinders. The retraction speed for spring return models can be slower than desired. Balluff added its BTL6 rod style linear position sensor with IO-Link 1.1 interface to its sensor portfolio.
