Coming unstuck in time Keeping cars on the road is what technicians will be doing for generations to come.

By Allan Janssen I’m feeling a little more jetlagged than normal after a spate of recent business travel.

It wasn’t so much the distance as the time zones that got to me though. And I don’t mean ‘time zones’ in the traditional sense – I’m talking about time travel.

That’s right. I relived much of the 20th Century in Michigan last week, visiting both the GM Heritage Center in Sterling Heights and the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn.

I walked “Highway 100” which showcases 100 years of innovation and design.

I saw the automotive industry in its infancy, when motive power was simple and rather inelegant. I saw the Quadricycle, Henry Ford’s first automobile, built in 1896 with a two-cylinder inline engine (59ci) that produced 4 horsepower. I found one of the earliest Curved Dash Oldsmobile, and marveled that this naïve little machine was once considered to be cutting-edge technology.

From there, I moved forward in time, through the stumbling advances in motive power, as Detroit ironed out its most obvious mechanical bugs and started concentrating on vehicle style.

Through the 40s and 50s, when Americans fell in love with their cars (not hard to see why). Into the 60s and 70s, when the motor industry began exploring ideals and its own Utopian visions of the future of transportation.

I studied the earliest “clean” cars with hybrid propulsion systems. I even got behind the wheel of the most outrageous concept vehicles imaginable.

And I moved into the present day, with its sophisticated computer-controlled engines, modern styling, and impressive

array of communication, navigation, and entertainment accessories.

But the most impressive part of the tour was into the future, represented by hundreds of technicians training to understand not only today’s automotive systems, but the ones that are coming down the pike, the ones that engineers are still fiddling with before finally releasing them.

I saw technicians from all parts of North America involved in a competition to prove skills that go far beyond the traditional wrench and muscle-power (see page 9). They excel at advanced electronic theory. They rely on brain power, not brawn to get the job done.

They represent the future of our industry.

And, in truth, that was the best part of my whirlwind time-tour. I have gained so much respect for the knowledge and skills automotive technicians possess.

To be able to find the smallest fault in such a complex piece of machinery, and set right the tiniest imbalance is truly remarkable.

I feel like I have witnessed the complete timeline of the motorcar, from its humblest beginnings to its impressive future still being written. And it’s clear that repair technicians will always be a very important part of the equation.

The only thing that would have made my time travel experience complete would have been if I’d done it from behind the wheel of a DeLorean DMC-12, the stainless steel wonder made all-themore famous in the Back to the Future movies.

LETTERS Flat rate doesn’t always lead to the best results RE: Working by their own rules, April 2006 I have to agree with Paul Summers from Northern Honda in North Bay in regards to flat rate. I’ve worked in flat rate shops and it’s dog-eat-dog on most days. It encourages short cuts, as you try to get the job done quickly so you can start the next one. The more jobs you can do in eight hours, the more you take home at the end of the week. But sometimes the job doesn’t get done right, and it leads to customer complaints.

Thank God I have my own shop today.

If a job takes me a little longer, I end up with a satisfied customer who will happily come back to my shop. If you can’t do a good job, then don’t do it. Give it to another mechanic.

Customers should return to OE dealers for a time RE: Lock-out situation is grave concern, May 2006 While I can’t comment specifically on the Volkswagen issue, I can say that Fords are

becoming ever more networked by the vehicle computers. As Ford moved forward into CAN networks and computer controls, more and more things have become VIN specific. ABS modules, air bags and the modules that control them, instrument clusters, and even radios.

(Anyone who takes a radio out of a Mustang, Ford 500, or Freestyle/Freestar will soon find out that it will not function until re-initialized.) Here in the U.S., independent shops have access to repair info like this. There’s a charge but it is nominal. Is it fair that a customer would be forced to take the vehicle back to the dealer for some repairs? I would say yes.

The OE manufacturers are responsible for their vehicles until the warranty runs out.

They are expected to repair them for free if a defect is found. And they have to cover the costs of any recalls. If the owner

was free to take his car anywhere he chose for warranty work as well as his maintenance, the cost of a vehicle would go through the roof. If indy shops were allowed full access to all repair information, I’d bet they would still cherry pick the choice work and send the stuff they didn’t want to the dealer… just like it has always been.

When OBD2 was introduced, it wasn’t because independents were screaming for it. It was mandated for all vehicles because of pressure from the American EPA and SAE. So

who will be the champion for R2R (Right to Repair)? My guess would be the Ministry of Health and Safety. I don’t think we’ll ever find someone who will scream that we need to unlock the radio though.

Restricted access to information is a growing problem RE: Lock-out situation is grave concern The lock-out is real. At our shop we work on mostly European vehicles. I’ve invested $45k or better, not including updates, in my scan equipment alone, and I still have to take vehicles to the dealer for burn-in if I buy a new comfort module or any other main fuel injection piece. This is a real problem!

Government needs to weigh in on this issue RE: Lock-out situation is grave concern I know that dealers provide a necessary service, and are usually more up-to-date than indies. But I find it strange that a government that thinks small business is the backbone of our communities takes no interest in the right-to-repair issue. We indies are being pinched out by large corporations. Of course dealers should do the warranty work. It’s called standing behind your product. I always assumed, perhaps incorrectly, that the cost of warranty repairs was built into the price of a new vehicle. But we always have, and always should be able to fix our customers cars. All of the home electronics companies release wiring diagrams to the independent TV repair shops, why is our industry different?

I can’t help but feel that some OEs feel they can’t compete with the level of customer service we indies provide, so they withhold information to force the customers to come back to them. That is not in the consumer’s best interest. It should be illegal. Where is Michael Moore?

Flushes are great, but repairs still need to be done

Cars aren’t breaking down like they used to

RE: Looking for cars to fix? April 2006 Your editorial caught my attention more than usual this time. I’ve always been an advocate that maintenance is better for the client as well as the technician, but there’s something to be careful of.

If your shop is geared up for maintenance with all the latest “triple bypass” machines, that’s great. But until you’ve had all of your client’s cars from new to start your new diet of fluid flushes, cars will continue to break down. Even the best maintained automobile wears out.

Pot holes break front ends, modules fail (and you can’t flush those), brakes wear out, and your best client still needs a second car for his college-age kids to drive.

So if all the technicians are busy flushing fluids and rotating air filter clips, diagnostic skills will fall by the wayside. Who will fix the car that has the horn blowing when you turn the wipers on?

Technicians with the ability to diagnose complex problems don’t grow on trees.

You can teach guys to hook up hoses to change fluids in a few minutes... But how will they ever learn the difference between a Zener diode and a PNP transistor?

And there’s another danger in investing in the wrong equipment for your shop.

You might have your customers on a good flush diet right, but sooner or later you’ll have to tell someone that you can’t replace his leaky heater core, his faulty airbag clockspring, or his wonky wiper linkage because you don’t have the right tools. You used your money to buy transmission dialysis equipment. The ROI on scan tools was too low and you didn’t bother to update them.

I agree maintenance is a great way to reduce cost and increase net value to the car owner. It is also highly profitable for the shop. But car manufacturers have been putting maintenance schedules in the cars they sell for 50 years... and owners have largely ignored them.

No matter how religiously the car is maintained, it will eventually need repairs.

Someone has to do it.

Now, if it’s not profitable, you’re doing it wrong! And that’s a whole different kettle of fish.

RE: Looking for cars to fix?

Shops hoping for a spike in business whenever there’s a cold snap or a long weekend are going to find themselves in trouble these days. Cars are becoming more reliable. Seeing them towed in during cold weather just doesn’t happen like it used too. Longer intervals for service are changing also. So the question is, are shops changing with the times or not? I think everyone’s learning that it’s cheaper to maintain it, than it is to repair it.

Boots in the bay As one forum member points out,‘Work is tough if your feet hurt.’

What are you wearing… on your feet, I mean. What brand or type of footwear do you wear on the job? I usually get a year out of a pair of boots. The foot-bed gets beaten down from the concrete floors. I have to replace the insoles after six months, and go through a few laces, too. Right now I’m trying a pair of Canadian-made “Canada West” boots from Winnipeg. Anyone else got a boot they swear by? Swear at?

For when it gets real cold and snowy I wear Sorel steel-toed snowmobile boots. The only time your feet get wet in those is when they sweat.

They’re like a safety tennis shoe style.

Steel toe and sole but very light and comfortable. When it hits 115°F outside, the parking lot is around the 140°F. You don’t want to heavy a boot on.

tor was only temporary solution. I bought a pair of boots out of Edmonton called Z-coil. They look a little goofy, but I can do 10 or 12 hours a day straight through without noticing any bother to my feet.

With my old boots I’d be in pain before morning coffee.

Hoists only go so high, and I’m 6’2” in my socks. I’m either perpetually slumping (hard on the back), or smashing my head on stuff. If I’m doing some electrical or under-dash work, I sometimes sneak on my running shoes. I know this is bad and I shouldn’t do it. Just being honest.

Just bought a new pair of Dakotas which worked well this winter. Kept my feet warm and dry.

Hopefully they’ll last more than a year.

About six months ago I bought a pair of Mechanix pit boots.

Light weight, good for working on concrete, and priced OK at $90. I’ve paid a lot more for less. I go through a pair in a year.

And they only cost $30.

I once owned a pair of CATs. Man, they were the absolute best. The most comfortable work boot I ever had. The only draw back was the $225 price tag.

You guys may think I’m crazy, but I don’t wear boots anymore. Nothing but a good pair of sneakers for me. They last five months if I’m lucky.

The wet foot syndrome is pretty much impossible to beat in the winter unless you’re wearing rubber boots!

Posted by: Trentski / 04-14-06 I wear the Dakota Met-Guard version. At first I found them a little bulky, but they save the tops of your feet if you drop things frequently. Had them since the fall and are still holding up nice. The most comfortable one I ever had were the Terra Wildsider but the leather was too high quality. Once the oil got in there they just fell apart.

ACDelco names Canada’s top TSS techs Fifteen techs vie for the three spots reserved for Canadians at ACDelco’s Technician of the Millennium competition.

By Allan Janssen Three Canadian technicians will compete in October for the prestigious title of Technician of the Millennium.

Phil Taekema of Woodriver Valley Automotive Service in Moncton, N.B, David Jaggard of Eccles Auto Service Inc. in Dundas, Ont., and Tom Bischoff of Williams Automotive Service in Kelowna, B.C. will face five U.S. competitors at the North American finals of the ACDelcosponsored competition. All are from member shops of ACDelco’s TSS (Total Service Support) banner program.

They secured their spots in the finals by beating other regional finalists in a dramatic elimination round at GM’s Heritage Center in Sterling Heights, Michigan.

The competition gave the techs two hours to find and fix five different faults on a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu LT. “This is a fantastic competition,” said Jaggard. “It’s a challenge to ask yourself, ‘Can somebody break a car that I can still fix?’”

He competed in the Central Canada region against Brandon Dmytryshyn of Locke Street Tire in Hamilton, Ont. (who placed second in his region); Jamie Bridge of Lynja Injection Services Ltd. in Napanee, Ont. (third place); Michael Lopers of Tomlin Auto Service in Oshawa, Ont.; and Paul Biggar of Drummond Service in Niagara Falls, Ont. “Competitions like this bring more awareness that technicians aren’t just hacks,” said Bischoff. “It takes a whole lot of knowledge to fix today’s cars.”

He said he’d studied wiring diagrams of the Malibu for weeks before the event.

And it seemed to pay off. Of all the competitors, he completed the test fastest.

“I’ve got adrenaline rushing through me right now,” he said after leaving the test area about 45 minutes early.

down from this!”

He competed in the Western Canada region against Murray Peissard of Winn Automotive in Kelowna (who placed second in his region); Wayne Colton of Dynamic Auto Service in Winnipeg (third place); Darshan Singh Deol of Deol Auto Service in Edmonton; and Ian Bellamy of Westview Auto Ltd. in Edmonton.

“It was a lot of fun,” said Taekema. “It was very nerve-wracking at first, but once I settled down, it was great. Then I was cruising!”

He competed in the Eastern Canada region against Charles Smith of D.C.D Auto Electric Inc. in Charlottetown (who placed second in his region); Darren Phillips of Darren Phillips Auto Repair in Lower Cloverdale, N.B (third place); Jack Estey of Craig Auto Electric in Fredericton; and Chris Grant of Sackville Auto Clinic Ltd. in Westcock, N.B. The three regional winners won a trip to the finals in Las Vegas, a new Snap-on tool box, a unique ACDelco uniform, and a commemorative plaque.

Cory Graham, ACDelco’s national sales and marketing manager, says the Technician of the Millennium competition demonstrates ACDelco’s commitment to industry-leading training, which gives technicians confidence of knowing they can fix any vehicle properly.

“Sadly a lot of shop owners have yet to realize that they have to make an investment in the gentlemen in their bays. By restricting them from going to training, and forcing them to take training on their own at nights or on weekends, they’re missing out on a lot of upgrades in the training world, ways of fixing newer technologies,” he said.

Supplier News Ideal Supply holds annual trade show in Ontario

Encouraging statistics to be released by U.S. group Central Ontario-based Ideal Supply held its annual trade show for industrial, electrical, and automotive customers. Held at the Orangeville Fairgrounds, it drew a crowd of about 1,700 customers over two days in May. It also featured a celebrity appearance by Canadian strongman Hugo Girard (six times named Canada’ strongest man, twice named North America’s strongest man, and in 2002 capturing the World’s Strongest Man title). New ‘Castrol Raceway’ open for business in Edmonton The raceway in Edmonton – once known as Budweiser Motorsport Park – is now being sponsored by Castrol. The facility became Castrol Raceway in May, following a new deal struck with Wakefield Canada, the exclusive distributor of Castrol lubricants in Canada.

Castrol Raceway houses a quarter-mile IHRA sanctioned drag strip, a three-eighths mile clay oval track, a 10-acre motocross facility and a 2.7 km road course currently under construction.

A report to be published this month is filled with positive news about the American aftermarket.

The Automotive Aftermarket Status Report, compiled by the Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Association (AASA), suggests Americans are taking better care of their cars, DIY activity is continuing to decline, and the economic forecast for the repair business is stronger than it has been for years.

AASA says unperformed maintenance – the work that is being ignored on America’s fleet of 232 million light vehicles – has dropped to $52 billion in 2005. That’s $4 billion less than it was estimated to be in 2004, and $10 billion less than the record high set in 2002.

“This drop may signify that industry efforts to educate consumers on vehicle maintenance may be paying off and that owners are indeed taking better care of their cars and trucks,” said Steve Handschuh, executive director of AASA. The Automotive Aftermarket Status Report will also contain data suggesting that all types of do-it-yourself (DIY) activity have dropped significantly over the past 10 years.

Based on comprehensive consumer surveys, the report reveals that between 1995 and 2005, “heavy” DIY activity fell from 33 per cent of the jobs to 25 per cent; “medium” DIY activity dropped from 35 per cent to 28 per cent; and the per cent of jobs in the “light” DIY service group declined from 54 per cent in 1995 to 40 per cent in 2005.

It is believed that increasing vehicle complexity and changing demographics have led to all three levels of DIY activity declining.

AASA research director Frank Hampshire notes that the DIY estimates are based on consumer purchases for DIY repairs.

Finally, the Status Report predicts that the light vehicle automotive aftermarket industry will grow 4.2 per cent in 2006.

New AASA research shows that the value of the light vehicle aftermarket (parts and labor) broke the $200 billion mark for the first time ever in 2005, finishing at $200.41 billion – a 5.2 per cent increase from 2004. The jump was the highest the industry has experienced since a 5.6 per cent increase in 2000.

If you include the $54.5 billion heavy duty aftermarket (Class 6 through 8), the total U.S. aftermarket is $255 billion – a 5.1 per cent increase over 2004.

AASA estimates that the light vehicle aftermarket will finish 2006 at nearly $209 billion. Growth will continue at a somewhat slower pace and reach $239 billion by the end of the decade.

“We expect the aftermarket to only get stronger in the years to come,” says Handschuh.

Federal budget features tool cost allowance as promised The Automotive Industries Association of Canada is pleased to report that the Conservative government has followed through with a campaign promise to address the cost of tools for skilled labor. In addition, there is now a tax credit initiative and a grant program aimed at helping employers who hire apprentices. In 2002, AIA successfully lobbied for a tool tax credit for apprentices. Since then, AIA has continued to meet with government and opposition representatives to extend this type of tax incentive to all licensed trades. The association describes this spring’s budget announcement as a vindication of its efforts.

Dear Erol: Woah! Slow down there!

If I understand you correctly, you’re not making much money, so you want to charge your customers less, and spend money advertising, so people will come in and pay you less? Is that what you’re saying?

I guess I haven’t been making myself clear.

You have to understand that your labor rate is part of a complex equation that goes way beyond a simple comparison of what others in your area are charging. You’ve got to be smart about your labor rate – even if your competitors aren’t.

As you know, I belong to a management group that meets every other month and we share lots of information.

I can tell you the subject of labor rate comes up fairly often. I’ll never forget my very first meeting. I was talking with one of the “star” members and my hourly labor rate was $2 higher than his. I was so proud of myself and thought this guy could learn a thing or two from me.

When we got talking about sales, he said he had average monthly sales of $93,000.

Well, I was in the ballpark, with $89,000.

I was still feeling pretty good. But then I asked how many technicians he had.

Turns out he had two techs and one apprentice. Three guys? How could he be doing $93,000 a month with three guys? I had five technicians and an apprentice!

He was doing more in sales with half as many technicians and a lower labor rate?

I was instantly humbled.

Over the years, I’ve learned a lot about

this subject. Let me try to summarize the problem and the solution as I see it.

First, I can assure you that if you’re “pretty busy” but not making “buckets of money,” it’s probably not a labor-rate issue, but a proficiency problem.

Proficiency is the calculation of how many hours we sell out of the ones we “buy” from our employees. We buy eight hours of labor every day from each technician. How many of those should we sell? Well, I can tell you that for many years I sold only four or five hours a day per technician. In fact, that’s the average for an independent shop in Canada. For every eight hours a technician is there, the shop sells only four or five.

Now, imagine that one day you order eight spark plugs. They arrive later that morning. You can lay them out on the JUNE 2006

floor and count them: 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8.

Four are installed in a customer’s car, but at the end of the day, the other four are missing. You can’t find them anywhere.

They’re just gone. The next day you order eight tires and install four of them but the other four simply disappear. How long could this go on before you’d make a point of finding out where all the merchandise is going? Most people would tackle that problem the very day they notice it happening!

But for some reason, most people don’t freak out about missing hours. For every tech they hire, they lose three or four hours a day, day after day after day.

I’ve worked very hard over the years to solve this problem. It has kept me up many nights, thinking through solutions.

It’s really quite simple. If you’re not selling the eight hours per technician per day that you’re buying, you either have a productivity problem, or an efficiency problem. Or maybe you have both!

The definitions are simple: Productivity is how much time of the day a technician spends on income-producing work. Efficiency is how fast the technician is. Proficiency is the combination of the two.

And the bottom line is that nothing impacts your profitability more than productivity and efficiency. Nothing!

You need to figure out if your employees are productive. Do they spend JUNE 2006

enough time working on income-producing work? And are they efficient? Are they fast enough at it? And are they doing it right the first time? The best way to answer these questions – and find out conclusively if you have a problem – is by using a time clock or some other system to track productivity and efficiency.

Getting a clock was probably the most effective way to “diagnose” what was happening at my shop. And I’ll be candid, I fought getting one for years! I know now that it probably cost me a huge amount of money to operate so long with lost labor inventory. I wasn’t tracking the most valuable inventory I had: my technicians’ time!

Here’s what it took to wake me up.

One day at a management meeting, the facilitator asked why I still wasn’t using a time clock. I said, “Well, I talked to my technicians and they said they don’t want one.” The facilitator said, “So how long have you been working for them?”

In that workshop, we received an Excel spreadsheet that shows the impact of increasing productivity and efficiency.

You’ll see by plugging in your own numbers that by increasing productivity from 60% to 90% and efficiency from 100% to 125% you can almost double your sales.

The best part is that it is accomplished without working one more hour or increasing the labor rate. That is the power of management! If you know any-

This was the kind of system I needed in place to keep my business on the rails.

I’d learned about the importance of systems in The E-Myth but now it was time to implement!

What I really needed was: 1. A time clock for tracking each labor operation; 2. An effective scheduling system; 3. A work order flow system so I could easily track each job; and 4. A marketing system to keep a steady flow of work year round.

The result? Our shop now consistently sells between 9.0 and 9.5 hours per technician per day.

It’s really easy to tell by the dollars if there’s a problem. If you’re not doing $25,000 to $30,000 per month per technician, you have a problem! Period.

It’s all about what happens with the time.

Here’s a great new book that I think will help you. It’s called The Number One Thing You Need To Know by Marcus Buckingham. I’ll admit, I found the first part of the book tough. I just wasn’t getting the point. My patience paid off though, because he has great things to say about managing, leading and sustained personal success. I think it will help you build your team and work out the bugs of implementing systems. It’s what us leaders have to do!

Well, I’m outa here. Kerry and I have our “date night” tonight and I have some errands to do as part of a few extra surprises for her. Wow, we’ve been married for 20 years and we still pull lots of fun surprises. It’s a blast.

Former tech made the jump to high-performance work… and hasn’t looked back since.

I

t doesn’t matter whether it’s an Acura on a road course, a CASCAR Sportsman car at Autodrome Ste. Eustache, a Dwarf car at Oswego, N.Y., or a high-performance remote-controlled car on an indoor track. If it races, Jocelyn Laliberte will either want to wrench on it or control it.

cian just outside of Montreal, before his career became a wild ride that led him to a number of race tracks throughout Quebec, Ontario, and New York.

“The shop I was at was closing. I’d been working on cars, and liked it, but I still remember the day I was under the car and had a big chunk of snow go right down my neck. That’s when I started

thinking about working on race cars fulltime,” he says.

Laliberte’s talent and work ethic became apparent in his first racing adventure: piloting go-karts.

“My first year, I struggled,” he admits.

“My motors were getting outperformed every week, so I figured the best way to beat that problem was to [work on them] CANADIAN TECHNICIAN 17

myself. I came out the next season and kicked butt with my own motors.”

His successes led to some freelance work, so he formed his own company and began tweaking motors for racers who were looking for the same horsepower and handling that he’d achieved.

Ultimately he was hired by a wellknown road racing shoe Francois Audette, as the full-time car chief for an Acura in the Firehawk series, responsible for all the maintenance at the shop during the week. For two seasons he cut his teeth with Francois, until an accident ended his benefactor’s career. Laliberte returned to his own company, Performance Plus, where he built race engines, and set them up for other racers, and fixed them when they needed repair.

In 1996, Laliberte climbed behind the wheel again, as he started shoeing a Dwarf-style car in the Legends class at Ste. Eustache, and the Ottodrome in Ottawa.

“I started to get the hang of it after the first few nights,” he recalls. “I improved and started running in the top five. I had great horsepower. I was building my own motors, and was able to use quite a bit of theory that I learned from karting to make horsepower. It was first race car I had driven with suspension. I was able to use some of the things on the Formula Ford such as the bump-steer, and how it affected the roll center. Those things weren’t common in the class at the time, and my experience gave me an advantage.”

Laliberte was prepared to take a step back from racing again in 1999 to concentrate on his growing racing business… but then he got an offer from Quebec racing legend Claude Leclerc to drive Leclerc’s back-up car in the 1999 Cari-All 300 at Ste. Eustache.

“I had a great debut. It was my first time in a full-sized stock car and I was able to stay out of trouble all day and come home with a fifth-place finish. At the time, Claude’s sponsor was looking for a second car at Ste. Eustache, and I got the offer.”

The full-time job with Claude involved prepping both cars. Again, he brought with him some unique ideas about suspension, learned from the Dwarf car, to apply to the CASCAR – though on a different scale.

“The CASCAR, whew! It was a fullsized purpose-built race car with a ton of horsepower,” he says. “It was a blast to drive. On a road course, a driver can help a bad setup so much, but on an oval, a driver can only do so much if his setup is bad. So I really concentrated on learning how adjustments affected the car.”

In 2001, Francois Audette resurfaced – with an exciting new offer.

“Francois had started a Formula Ford team for his two sons Mathieu and Remy.

I’d been working on cars, and liked it, but I still remember the day I was under the car and had a big chunk of snow go right down my neck.

That’s when I started thinking about working on race cars full-time.”

They were both aspiring drivers, and I was able to help them become better racers. I taught them what to ‘feel’ in a race car, and how they could overcome an illhandling car by taking different lines through the corners. Those lessons came from watching their dad race, and racing karts myself.”

Laliberte left Audette’s team after two seasons to once again concentrate on his business and his own racing program. He built a Suzuki Swift to race in the MiniStock class at Ste. Eustache and traveled as far as Oswego, New York for the ‘Race of Champions’ in his four-cylinder racer.

Late in the season, Laliberte destroyed his Swift in a crash.

“It was a bad wreck,” he says. “The car was cut in half and the engine wound up about 400 feet from the car. I had a destroyed race car, but my sponsors wanted me to continue racing, in a truck.

We bought a truck that wasn’t in very good shape and rebuilt it from the ground up. So far, we’ve done very well with it. It’s a GM stock frame with a fiberglass body. We have load bolts in it, and some items are fabricated, such as the control arms.”

The big change in the Ste. Eustache Pro Truck division is a new crate motor rule, with everyone racing powerplants from General Motors.

“I love them,” exclaims Laliberte. “You save so much time in preparation, and you don’t have to worry at all. It allows my team to spend one less night at the shop working on the car,” he laughs.

“—or maybe one more night working on the chassis.”

Laliberte is a firm believer that if a technician is a race fan, working on a team will make him that much better of a technician back at the shop.

“You learn to use a lot of logic to solve problems,” he explains. “You see things that you don’t see on the street, and when you’re under the pressure of competition, you have to be able to fix those problems quickly.”

There are lessons for this determined racer and engine builder even at Circuit Telejuide Ste. Roc, the indoor track for remote controlled cars that he manages in his spare time.

More than 100 members race gas- and electric-powered remote controlled cars there, often with big budgets, complete race teams, and big-name sponsors The track is also an oval (with an optional road course on the infield), and measures 161 feet, complete with eight degrees of banking in the corners, which works out to a scale 3/10th-mile surface. He has applied his race experience to this new venue with great success.

“I know from working on real race cars that everything has to be straight, and clean. You can’t have anything binding up,” he says. “You have to respect measurements and clearances. When you’re racing a miniature car, it’s much the same as it is at the track, you have to keep a clear head, and not get too excited and start making mistakes. In a lot of ways it’s just like real racing – only smaller.”

At both tracks, the full-size and the miniature, he says racers have to stay on their toes and handle any eventuality.

“When the feature starts, you have to be there,” he says. “That’s pressure!”

Fortunately, Laliberte thrives on that kind of pressure. And he’s always prepared for the next turn on the crazy ride his career has become.

Breaking THE CODES

A simple emissions problem can affect many systems.

Finding the root problem hinges on how you read the DTCs.

T

he interconnection between automotive systems and components grows more complex with each model year.

For example, there’s no question that emission problems can lead to drive-ability and engine management problems.

Emission controls are constantly monitored by the vehicle’s on-board computer. When an emission control problem or component fails and causes tailpipe emissions to exceed a preset standard, the on-board computer will activate the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) lamp. A diagnostic trouble code (DTC) will be set by the end of a second trip if the fault is repeated or remains 20 CANADIAN TECHNICIAN

from a previous trip or failure.

The most common emission-related problems and DTCs, shown from test lane test results over the last few years, represent six major areas or systems to be concerned with: the O2 sensor, the air-fuel mixture, engine misfire, exhaust gas recirculation, catalyst (catalytic converter), and evaporative emission system (EVAP).

P0133, P0134, and P0141 O2 sensor codes and systems will rank right up there at the top of any emission program and testing. The O2 DTCs are either slow (P0133), zero activity (P0134), or a heater problem (P0141).

All of these will cause a

driveability issue as the O2 sensor is considered to be a major control component of all OBD systems. A slow activity sensor usually is a contamination problem with high mileage and improper engine oil control ranking high as the root cause of the problem. A heater circuit is used on most OBD vehicles to assure a rapid report from the sensor to the on-board computer. AC compressor Four Seasons has released valuable tech information on avoiding compressor body leaks. It’s well known that Harrison 6 cylinder compressors, particularly the DA6, HR6, HD6 and HT6 models can have body leaks. Since most of these brackets are cast aluminum, warping is highly unlikely as a cause of leaking. HT6 uses a single solid bracket and the key to avoiding leaks and other problems is a solid fit of the compressor

in the cradle and bolt torquing.

First, to assure a solid fit in the cradle, try to rock it. If the compressor goes back and forth, place a shim or standard washer between the compressor and the bracket. Then, torque the four bolts evenly and alternately, making sure the compressor remains solid in the cradle before the bolts are torqued. Unless they are torqued properly, as the bracket materials is heated

and cooled in the engine compartment, the bracket and compressor can twist or rock to conform to each other. In addition to avoiding body seal leaks and increasing the compressor life span, careful cradle fit and proper torquing will also reduce vibration and noise. “Yeah, yeah,” he complained.

“Everybody wants it yesterday. Look, that’s quite a blockage you’ve got there.

Don’t know what it is or who put it there, but I’m gonna have to break out the snake to fix it.”

Tooner watched with interest as the plumber brought in a coil of flexible steel cable and sent it spinning down the pipes to chew its way through the mess inside.

The toilet was flowing freely in minutes, with Beanie standing first in line to test drive it.

“Hmm,” said Tooner, “that gives me an idea…”

Back in the shop, he removed the throttle body assembly and attached an old piece of parking brake cable to his cordless drill. Feeding it into the EGR port, he spun it at slow speed, soaking it well with carb cleaner until the cable suddenly burst through the blocked port into the plenum. It wasn’t long before the EGR port was completely free and functional once more.

“And the best part,” bragged Tooner later, “is that I not only didn’t have to replace the upper manifold; I didn’t even have to remove it!”

“Let’s hear it for Tooner,” I said, raising my coffee mug in salute, now full for the first time in a month since Beanie took our advice about not reusing the coffee filters.

“Hey,” said Quigley after taking a sip of his java. “What are all these floaty things in here?”

“Let me guess,” said Basil, picking coffee grinds out of his teeth. “Beanie, instead of using old filters that are plugged and moldy, you’ve now decided to not use any filter at all, right?”

“You got it,” grinned The Bean. “It’s a little chunky, but now we’ve got flow!”

The Car Side

Coffee makers, toilets, EGRs… they all benefit from a good steady stream.

“H

ouston, I think we have a problem,” said Basil as he put down his empty coffee mug.

Beanie went over and gave the coffeemaker a shake. “Hey, it ain’t my fault; I started a new batch over 15 minutes ago.” He stared at the slow dribble coming out of the basket. “I don’t know why it’s taking so long.”

“Just a suggestion,” I said, “but maybe you should replace the filter more than once a week.”

“Ahem.” Basil cleared his throat. “I wasn’t referring to the lack of hot caffeinated liquids, as disturbing as that is; it’s those loud noises across the hall that concern me.”

We all stopped to listen to the unpleasantries emanating from the staff washroom. I did a quick head count and came up minus a technician. “Hey, Toon!”

I hollered. “Everything okay in there?”

The washroom door burst open, revealing Tooner in full outrage. “Okay?” he growled through clenched teeth.

“Sure, except for a plugged toilet and some water-logged coveralls!”

By this time unpleasant odors were wafting towards the lunchroom. “Oh, look at the time,” said Quigley. “Beanie, I’ll take a rain check on that coffee refill.” But Beanie was already out the door, with Basil close on his heels.

“Sorry,” said Tooner. “Did I do that?”

“Good guess,” I said as I held my breath and dialed up the local plumber.

Once our cantankerous technician was reclothed and sanitized, he came out front looking for his next job. “Take this one,” said Quigley, handing him the keys to a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix with a 3.1 litre V6. “The MIL lamp is on, and the code is P0401; insufficient EGR flow.”

“Huh,” said Tooner, reaching for the work order. “Today is our day for plugged systems… and you can take that clothes peg off your nose, Quig. It was 30 CANADIAN TECHNICIAN

only funny for the first 10 minutes.”

Quigley obliged and picked up a handwritten note off the service counter.

“Apparently the owner had the car to another shop where they told him the EGR passage was restricted, and that it needed a new upper intake manifold.”

Tooner’s eyebrows shot up. “That sounds drastic. I’ll see what I can do.”

A short time later he called me over for a consultation. “Well, the port is definitely plugged,” he said. “I pulled the EGR valve and started poking at the carbon buildup, but the passage takes a pretty sharp bend,

ending up right behind the throttle plates.” He manually opened the throttle body and shone a light inside. “I suppose I could remove the throttle body and clean the exit port, but it sure would be nice to clean the whole passage.”

I noticed a spray can on the work bench. “Isn’t the carb cleaner helping at all?”

“Not much,” he grunted. “Already used a whole can. That stuff is really caked in there.”
