HANDHELD METERS

The Eaton WMZT series miniature circuit breakers have been added to AutomationDirect’s product offering of circuit protection devices. The single-pole and triple-pole devices, available in sizes from 0.5-40 Amps, offer optimum and efficient protection for branch and control circuits.

Omega’s new line of handheld meters consists of high accuracy thermocouple, RTD or combined input data logging thermometers. There are three display locations on the large, easy-to-read LCD that displays the temperatures and differences of the two inputs as well as the specific function when in use. The HH100 logs data in real time PC monitoring and each channel is capable of storing up to 9999 data records per channel in the data logging mode. ROBOTIC BLAST MACHINE

The Model RB-TRR-900 robotic blasting system incorporates a component-ma­ nipulating 6-axis robot and a shuttle trans­ fer cart to fully automate processing of tray-loads of components. It is designed for precise surface preparation, shot peen­ ing and cosmetic finishing operations. The robotic blast machine is provided with a single suction-blast gun or pressure-blast nozzle that is rigidly bracketed in a fixed position inside the 42 x 42 x 42-inch blast chamber. Guide rails form a track exten­ sion into an antechamber on one side of the blast cabinet. Rolling on the track, the transfer cart bearing a tray full of compon­ ents is moved in and out of the blast en­ closure by a precision linear actuator and a pneumatically actuated vertical sliding door closes to isolate the load/unload sta­ tion from the blasting zone.

This new series of metal felt filter ele­ ments employs filter media made of thin filaments of non-woven stainless steel, which is suitable for high pressure, highly corrosive, highly viscous or radioactive applications. The metal felt employed is highly porous (up to 85%) providing very high rates. Random filter filtration (metal felt) can provide absolute particle reten­ tion, longer on-stream time and high dirt-holding capacity for under 60 micron filter elements. Metal felt filter elements are often found in demanding applica­ tions such as chemical and catalyst recov­ ery, polymer filtration, aerospace, medical and pharmaceutical, nuclear venting, food and beverage and refinery uses.

SURFACE HARDNESS COATING

Seco has announced the development of grade RX2000 featuring a surface hard­ ness coating of up to 3200 Vickers for in­ creased productivity and tool life in Seco Precimaster reaming system applications, which feature ex-changeable throw-away heads. The new RX coating has a low friction co-efficient to minimize the risk of edge build-up to improve chip evacua­ tion. In conjunction with a micro-grain substrate, this super-thin coating provides excellent surface finish, chip control and consistent tool life. The RX2000 is wellsuited for all materials except non-fer­ rous, and works well in mass production application environments that can handle increased cutting data.

NEW GRADE POLYETHYLENE

Universal Gravo Plast is now injection moulding a new grade of ultra high mo­ lecular weight polyethylene. The new grade offers the advantage of using con­ ventional injection moulding equipment and techniques to produce net shape parts without machining. VISION HELPS AUTOMATE HIGH SPEED LOADING OF TRANSPARENT CARTONS Vision sensor makes sure company’s brand is visible when packaging bottles in transparent cartons

I

t is very difficult to automate loading of bottles into transparent cartons because of the need to orient the bottles so that the right part of the label is visible. In the past, a major beverage producer had 15 people dedicated to the task of manually orienting the bottles. Recently, this producer has become the first to successfully automate high-speed carton loading with the use of a bucket autoload cartoner from AFA Nordale Packaging Systems, Brampton, Ontario that orients the bottles and places them into cartons at a speed of 450 bottles per minute.

The cartoner orients the bottles by simultaneously spinning 14 bottles while 14 Cognex Checker 3G1 vision sensors view each bottle’s label. The Checker vision sensors send a signal to stop spinning each individual bottle as soon as it sees a letter that indicates the label is in the correct position. “We tried numerous vision sensors but the Cognex Checker was the only one that was capable of accurately detecting all of the different possible colours of labels,” said David Langen, Electrical Engineer for AFA Nordale.

Difficult orientation challenge

The beverage manufacturer has seen rapid increases in demand for its products. The company’s unique packaging is one of the keys to its success. A colourful plastic sleeve encloses the bottle. The company makes several different types of drinks and each drink has its own unique package design and colour scheme.

Two bottles are packaged inside a transparent carton that highlight the unique design of each bottle. It’s critical that the bottles be oriented so that the central point of the label is visible through the transparent window of the carton.

In the past, the bottles were filled on an automated line. A crew of people was assigned to place the bottles into the cartons after filling. Automated cartoner machines have long been available but these machines have not been capable of orienting the bottles before placing them into the carton which makes them unsuitable for this application.

“With the advent of reliable machine vision systems, orienting the bottles before placing them into the cartoner has become a viable option,” Langen said. “Orienting bottles at a speed of 30 or 60 bottles per minute would

not be a major challenge. But in this application, the beverage manufacturer needs to pack 450 bottles per minute.”

AFA Nordale is a leading producer of cartoner machines, whose MK-SBA compact sliding bucket autoload cartoner is used by many producers of bottled beverages. The high speed bottle infeed with quick change timing screw coupling allows for quick and accurate bottle size changeover. Digital scales allow the operator to keep track of different product configurations to further expedite changeover. So it was natural that the beverage manufacturer would ask AFA Nordale to propose a solution to automate the cartoning operation at required levels of speed.

Machine vision was critical operation

Sergiu Dinescu, Electrical Engineer, was given the lead responsibility to develop the machine. “When we were first approached by the manufacturer, it was clear that the mechanical aspects of the machine were well within requirements that we have met on many previous jobs,” Dinescu said. “The big challenge was clearly going to be our ability to orient the bottles at the high speeds required by this application. We built a test rig and evaluated demonstration sensors from all the leading vision companies. We tried each of the sensors with all of the different label types. Each sensor seemed to have problems with one or more label types.”

“For example, one sensor worked with the red labels but not with the black or blue labels,” Dinescu said. “Another sensor worked with the red and blue labels but not the black labels. We also tried reading the bar codes which were on the back of each label. The bar code readers that we tried were able to accurately locate the label. But after we read the label it was necessary to spin the bottle around just the right amount so that the front of the label would be visible in the window and we found that this was difficult to accomplish.”

“Then we tried the Cognex Checker 3G1 and found that it was able to read all of the different labels without any difficulty,” Dinescu said. “Setting up the vision sensor was very easy. We simply trained the sensor on the label and clicked on the feature that we wanted to detect. We tried several different features on the bottle and settled on the large piece of text on the front of the bottle label. From that point on, the vision sensor sent a signal whenever it saw the label. The Checker is able to detect all label colours without difficulty. We were amazed at the speed with which the sensor was able to detect the labels. Our tests on the rig showed that

it can easily exceed our customer’s requirements by detecting labels at a speed of 1000 bottles per minute.”

The Checker 3G1 integrates lighting, optics, camera, processor and I/O in an industrial IP67 housing package that fits the tight confines of automation equipment. The Checker 3G1 can be configured as a presence sensor or measurement sensor. Presence sensors verify that features are present.

Checker is also able to detect and track over 6,000 ppm in varying positions along the production line, overcoming imprecise part positioning and delivering consistent, precisely timed pass/fail results. The Cognex offering does not require a PC for setup. Instead the SensorView Teach Pendant, with its unique One-Click Setup technology, allows the user to set up jobs right on the line and have them running in a matter of minutes. A single teach pendant can be used to set up any number of Checker 3G sensors and can remain connected for real-time applications monitoring.

How the cartoner machine works

As soon as the bottle is in the proper orientation, the sensor sends a signal to the machine control system. Then a cylinder in the orienter lifts the bottle off the belt so that it stops spinning. During machine validation, the orienter demonstrated the ability to position the labels within +/- 15% of dead centre, well within the +/- 30% requirement of the bottle manufacturer. The success rate in orienting the conveyors is 99.99%. The only bottles that fail to orient properly to date have been those with the sleeves formed improperly so that the bottles get stuck and fail to rotate in the buckets.

The bottle conveyor with bottles now in the proper orientation enters the pusher section of the cartoner machine. Here, another section of conveyor carrying cartons runs parallel to and at the same speed as the bottle conveyor. The carton conveyor is fed by a device that picks up an unformed carton, presses it into the final shape and loads it into the carton conveyor.

This conveyor carries pushers driven by a cam that push two bottles at a time into a carton.

“Up to now, drink manufacturers have avoided using cartons with windows because there has been no satisfactory solution to the problem of orienting bottles at high speed,” Langen concluded. “This new machine is the first to solve this problem by combining the latest vision sensor technology with an innovative mechanical solution. The machine meets the beverage manufacturer’s requirement of 450 bottles per minute and has been tested to 600 bottles per minute. In both cases, the Cognex Checker 3G1 vision sensors have been able to align every single bottle except for those with misformed sleeves. It was much easier to set up the orienter than we expected.

We got it up and running very quickly and it has proven very stable in operation. The beverage manufacturer told us that we were the only supplier that offered a solution for automatic cartoning that did not require modifying the existing bottle or carton.”

With the critical vision problem resolved, AFA Nordale engineers designed a complete cartoner system that meets the beverage manufacturer’s requirements. After being fitted with sleeves, the bottles are laid into individual buckets that are carried by a conveyor through the machine. A device called the orienter travels beside the bottle conveyor at the same speed and simultaneously turns 14 bottles in the proper orientation. Then the orienter moves backwards into position to orient the next 14 bottles. The motion of the orienter as it moves along the line and then back to handle the next batch of bottles is similar to the head of a typewriter.

The orienter contains one friction belt that spins all of the bottles and 14 cylinders, one for each bottle. At the core of this next generation release, Lincoln has patented a wire and flux delivery system that expands the possible applications for robotic submerged arc beyond the normal restrictions of previous mechanized operation. The new, integrated torch design with streamlined flux delivery allows the user to incorporate robotic SAW solutions on corners and path variations, previously not possible with other mechanized gravity flux delivery systems. The new Power Wave machine features new iArc™ digital controls, resulting in faster arc response and greater arc stability.

The Tri-Mark® Metalloy B-2-S and Metalloy B3-S low alloy submerged arc electrodes both provide weld deposits that withstand elevated service temperatures and improve productivity. The Metalloy B2-S submerged arc electrode deposits weld metal with 1 1/4 percent chrome and 1/2 percent molybdenum and can be used for high service temperature applications, including heat exchangers, boiler and power piping, and valves. The Metalloy B3-S electrodes provide a weld deposit with 2 1/4 percent chrome and 1 percent molybdenum, while also creating weld deposits that maintain high strength and provide good oxidation resistance at service temperatures up to 425°C. Sunnen’s new match honing process produces bore specifications to match the measured size of individual pins, plungers or pistons that may have dimensional inconsistencies due to special plating, coating or other treatment. Match honing is an ideal technology for achieving ultraprecise fit between mating parts of fuel injectors, piston pumps, cartridge valves and similar products that use coatings or other treatments on male component parts that make it impossible to achieve consistent diameter size. The SV-1015 honing system uses integrated air gaging for closed loop of finished bore size to “match” the size of each male component that is measured on the machine immediately prior to the honing cycle. Using Sunnen’s super abrasive MMT tool, the air-gage-equipped machine can automatically control hole size without operator intervention, working in a size range of 3-65 mm diameter.

Ultrasonic Welding (USW) is a joining technique that uses high frequency ultrasonic acoustic vibrations to create solidstate welds. It is used for joining dissimilar materials which are thin malleable metals as well as plastics and thermoplastics. Routine use of Pressurex® during the set up of ultrasonic welders helps ensure proper contact pressure and alignment between the horn and the anvil, which results in weld of greater bond strength and lower rejected product.

Pres­­surex® is an easy-to-use tool that reveals the distribution and magnitude of pressure between any two contacting surfaces. When placed between the horn and the anvil of the ultrasonic bonder, the film instantaneously and permanently changes colour directly proportional to the pressure applied. The precise pressure magnitude is then easily determined by comparing colour variation results to a colour corelation chart. Pressurex® is extremely thin and flexible, which enables it to conform to curved surfaces.

The Royal Rota-Rack® is a lean device that enables any bar-fed CNC lathe to run unattended for extended periods of time. DeWALT announces the launch of a new line of Next Generation Extended Performance (XP) Grinding Wheel Abrasives that are suitable for welders, fabricators and ship builders tasked with a variety of applications including metal grinding, pipe beveling, and root grinding. New CYCLO CUT Max-Flute highperformance end mills innovate titanium roughing with a 16-flute design capable of high removal rates at low torque. The high-density end mills run at 2037 rpm and 231 IPM to achieve removal rates of up to 8 in3/min with only 25 lft lb of torque and 9 hp. Max-Flute tools use shallow, radial widths of cut, which transfers less heat to the cutting tool and allows high surface speeds for roughing titanium, inconel and other high temperature alloys that have traditionally required high torque at low rpm to achieve desired removal rates. Max-Flute tools are designed with a differential pitch on the tool flutes to break up harmonics and reduce chatter.

The Series PS model 3015 is a short gantry, 2D flying optic laser system capable of handling 60” wide x 120” long workpieces. With the short gantry arrangement, operator vision is enhanced on the machine, plus the more compact design facilitates a high degree of regulation in the cutting process. Model PS 3015 features rapid single axis speed of 4724 ipm, simultaneous X-Y axis speed of 7900 ipm, driven by twin servos on the gantry and maximum cutting speed of 1181 ipm, all with positioning accuracies better than +/- 0.004” per 118” of travel and repeatability to 0.001”. A dual shuttle pallet system is onboard to maintain optimum productivity in processing.

MACHINING CENTRE PROCESS CONTROLLER

The ESAB A2-A6 Process Controller PEK system is adapted for use with ESAB’s automatic power sources LAF 631/1001/1251/1601 and TAF 801/1251 and can be used for submerged arc welding, GMAW welding and arc gouging.

The control system is connected to the power source via a control cable and incorporates a CAN bus system for data transfer. The system is designed for ease of use with a clear text menu and a large display to keep the user informed about main parameters such as current, voltage and travel speed. PEK allows the user to define limits for the settings as well as for the measured parameters and will alert the user if the weld parameters move outside the allowed limits.
