AIR KNIFE EPOXY SYSTEM
Master Bond EP21FL is a two-part epoxy resin system that features low to moderate viscosity. It is well suited for potting, coating and sealing electronic assemblies and excels at bonding dissimilar substrates with different coefficients of expansion. ZONE CONTROL VALVES
The Series ZV2 and 3ZV2 zone valves are suitable for use with temperature controllers and thermostats to control temperature in HVAC systems. The Eos-Array is an innovative control solution for solar photovoltaic applications. It is a combination of modules which perform the complete control of a photovoltaic plant and is extremely expandable. The core unit is the VUM-M which performs the local bus management of both measuring units, the VMUS and the VMU-P as well as the I/O unit, the VMU-O. The VMU-M assigns the proper local unit address automatically and gathers all the local measurements coming from VMU-S and VMU-P measuring units. ULTRASONIC BATHS FOR PARTS CLEANING improve safety and quality by Del Williams
E
ngineering consultant Hal Weatherly first learned about ultrasonic cleaning while working in aerospace decades ago. He used ultrasonic technology to clean hydraulic parts before assembly and to prepare clean rubber to metal bonds. In the electronics and semi-conductor industry, he relied on ultrasonic part cleaning to manufacture and control quality in computer chips. “Even a few molecules of contaminant could foul up a chip,” says Weatherly. “Since whatever we scrubbed with would have to be absolutely clean and the process absolutely consistent, there’s no way we could’ve achieved this without ultrasonic cleaning.” Today, using a new generation of advanced ultrasonic cleaning technology, engineers like Weatherly are attaining ROI in months for parts cleaning equipment while improving safety, quality and cost. Traditionally, industrial parts cleaning involved tedious, costly scouring of parts by hand with wire brushes, high-pressure spray washers and the like. It often required special handling and disposal when toxic chemical or solvent baths were used. Despite this, traditional cleaning has not always been consistent or thorough. Cracks, crevices and interior parts have been missed or inadequately cleaned when conventional equipment or human nature hasn’t been up to task. Enter the ultrasonic tank, a process enhancing, time and labour saving device that manufacturers in various industries are turning to. Instead of specially outfitted personnel scrubbing and washing for hours on end, they can simply place parts to be cleaned in a tank, flip a switch and move on to other jobs. The tanks used by many companies are manufactured by Omegasonics. Dirty or contaminated parts are typically placed in a chamber or tank containing an environmentally friendly, water-based cleaning soap. An energyconverting transducer is then electronically activated to produce some sonic frequencies approaching 40,000 cycles per second. Cleaning is accomplished as energy is released by the creation and collapse (called cavitation) of microscopic bubbles formed at these ultrasonic frequencies. The resultant shock waves break up and lift off dirt and other contaminants. Users have not only found ultrasonic part cleaning to be more cost-effective in terms of labour and time, but also found it does a better job of reaching areas unable to be cleaned by human hands and other devices. For instance, on an engineering consulting job for a manufacturer of portable air separation equipment, Weatherly was asked to improve the parts cleaning process of a medical oxygen application. A special challenge was cleaning oxygen cylinders, whose narrow openings made them difficult to clean. This was especially important because any contamination in an oxygenrich environment could be a potential fire hazard.
”The previous cleaning method, involving hand scrubbing with a soap solution and a rinse with isopropyl alcohol, was labour intensive and not entirely consistent,” says Weatherly. “By nature, people have difficulty doing something exactly the same way every time. We aimed to streamline the parts cleaning process while proactively improving quality control.” After a thorough review of the requirements, including cost analysis. Weatherly recommended and the company chose a Viking X2 portable two-stage ultrasonic cleaning system by Omegasonics. wash with a dual cartridge filtration of contaminants. To further expedite parts cleaning, a second tank provides a heated, ultrasonic rinse with single stage filtration. For each tank, separate digital ultrasonic timers and digital temperature controls allow a worker to simply put in a number of parts at once, set the controls and move on to other work. For a cleaning solution, OmegaClean was chosen, a product that removes oil, grease, carbon and other contaminants from a variety of metals. ”The ultrasonic process is the key to making parts cleaning efficient and reproducible while cutting costs,” says Weatherly.” It not only cleans easy-toreach areas more effectively, but also
hard-to-reach ones.” Since the ultrasound penetrates the oxygen cylinder wall to clean the hardto-reach inside, for instance, it’s much faster, more thorough and consistent than traditional parts cleaning methods. “Before each cylinder took 45 minutes to clean by hand,” adds Weatherly. “Now it takes just five minutes to clean each ultrasonically. We’re seeing similar benefits in a range of parts. SMART CAMERAS AND LabVIEW help develop a part finishing and inspection system
industrial design and flexibility. We also used LabVIEW to implement the inspection sequences and for the user interface. Developing the human machine interface (HMI) in LabVIEW allows the operator to quickly see the status of the system, the part under inspection and the statistics of each part as it is processed. The operator can view each of the parts presented to the vision system, a pass/fail counter that highlights the number and status of the parts processed, and the results of each inspection process on the HMI. We have used LabVIEW in similar inspection systems in which we built the code for a PC-based system. All of the code previously used for the PC was easily transferred to the NI Smart Camera, which allowed us to take advantage of the common platform.

T
o automate the deburring and inspection process for turbine airfoils for aircraft engines, AV&R Vision & Robotics designed a system that uses a six-axis robot to manipulate the airfoil to combine two critical operations. First, we deburr the airfoil using tooling chosen specifically to deburr the dovetail of the part and create a radius on each edge. Then a vision system designed for surface inspection examines the part and records the data based on the part serial number, which is also read using the vision system. We originally developed the system for a large OEM aircraft-engine manufacturer based on a lean manufacturing work flow. The operator loads the airfoil into the work cell after the grinding operation. In addition, we designed the system to be programmable so we can easily adapt for many other deburr and inspection applications including consumer goods such as wrenches, medical device implants, surgical tools, automotive components, and a variety of other aerospace engine components.
Automating the Deburring and Inspection Process
In the past, operators inspected and deburred different complex and high-precision turbine airfoils using deburring tools to finish the parts and then manually inspect the airfoils to ensure the parts were within specified tolerance. We developed a cell that can automatically perform these two processes, ensuring every part leaves the cell with the desired quality. After loading the part into the cell, the system initializes and a robot picks the part from the fixture and presents it to a deburring station that removes all of the burrs from the root of each airfoil, breaks

In addition, the vision system reads the serial number using NI optical character recognition (OCR) algorithms. After inspection, properly deburred parts are placed on the output of the cell and moved to the next production stage. We used two NI products in the finishing and inspection cell. This lift system was specifically requested for an application that raises, spins and tilts large conveyors of special liquids during the production process which improves the ergonomic conditions for workers. The manual rotate turns 360 degrees and the air brake allows it to be securely locked in any position for ease of processing and operator safety.
