FULLY ENCLOSED BULK BAG DISCHARGER Keeps the dust out of resin flakes in adhesive production

J

owat Adhesives, an international adhesives company, wanted to find a totally enclosed dust-tight Bulk Bag Discharger for its manufacturing plant.

The plant produces adhesives for a variety of industries.

“We wanted to avoid any dust contamination from the variety of resin flakes running through the Discharger used to produce our broad line of industrial adhesives,” noted Mike Kuhn, Plant Engineer at Jowat Adhesives, Inc. “We were seeking a system that was totally enclosed and didn’t have seams or small holes through which dust infiltrated and contaminated the working environment.”

Kuhn found exactly what he needed at a trade show - the ‘Spiroflow’ Universal Type 2 Bulk Bag Discharger. Spiroflow designed the Discharger to meet Jowat Adhesives’ exact specifications. Not only does the unit accept two sizes of bulk bags, it also incorporates a bag emptying station. Within two months, the unit was installed at the plant and, according to Kuhn, has been running 24/7 and operating flawlessly ever since.

“The ‘Spiroflow’ Discharger is clean, operator-friendly, easy to load, compact and takes up less space than our other Dischargers in the plant,” Kuhn said.

“Our productivity and environmental quality has also been enhanced.”

To help control the dust, the Discharger’s dual containment cabinet connects to Jowat’s central dust collection system.

An eco-friendly manufacturer, Jowat Adhesives produces environmentally-safe industrial adhesives for a variety of applications in the wood, furniture, paper, packaging, construction upholstery, automotive, textile, general assembly, mattress and foam converting industries.

The industrial adhesives manufactured at the Jowat plant include dispersion, hot melt, solvent-based, moisture curing and a variety of other adhesives.

The ‘Spiroflow’ Universal Type 2 Bulk Bag Discharger at Jowat Adhesives has a surge capacity hopper that was custom designed in stainless steel to accept resin flakes in 1,000 lb Supersacks, 500 lb Mini Sacks or 50 lb bags.

Resins are gravity fed by the Discharger through the hopper into a vacuum conveyer at the base of the Discharger. The vacuum conveyor transfers the resins from the Discharger to a process vessel in an enclosed, totally controlled dust-free manner.

According to Mathias Lee, Vice President of Sales for Spiroflow Systems, providing controllable discharge by volume of poor flowing materials is designed to eliminate any waste or spillage for increased productivity and a cleaner work environment.

The Discharger at Jowat includes spring-loaded arms on the bag support frame, an integral bag dumping station, bag spout closure bars and a base massage system.

Using a lift truck, the 500 lb and 1,000 lb bags of resin flakes are rigged onto a special lifting frame and then lifted by the lift truck onto the Discharger’s support frame located near the top of the unit. In comparison, the 50 lb bags are manually dumped into the hopper through an integral bag dumping station. The station has a chain track for easy opening and closing of the door.

“This manual dumping station lets Jowat add minor additives into the process and gives them a fall back position should the supply of material in the larger bulk bags be disrupted,” noted Lee. Spring-loaded bag support arms gradually rise and tension the bag during emptying to ensure complete discharge of the resin flakes. The arms also prevent the

bag spout or liner from sagging.

According to Kuhn, this was another feature sought by Jowat. “What this does is assure material flows as the bag gets lighter by raising it so it’s easy to empty,” he said.

A bag spout closure bar controls the flow of resins and pinch the neck of the bag above the point where the outlet spout is tied. Once the spout is untied, the pinch bars are opened to allow discharge.

Flow, in this case, only begins after the access door in the dust cabinet has been closed for greater dust containment.

An adjustable base massage system assures consistent flow by gravity of the resins through the system and prevents compaction. The reins are gravity fed through the Discharger until they are transferred to the vacuum conveyor and on to the Jowat process.

SNAP CURE EPOXY

Master Bond EP17HT-3 is a one-part epoxy that sets in 20 to 30 seconds and snap cures in only 2 to 3 minutes. As a one-part system, no mixing is required and the epoxy can be cured in sections up to 1/4” thick. Its working life is indefinite as it will not gel until heated above 200°F. Resistant to a wide range of chemicals including water, oil and most organic solvents, its features include a Shore D hardness that exceeds 85 and a tensile lap shear of 2100 psi. It is 100% reactive and contains no solvents or diluents.

Resinlab has launched a new polyurethane encapsulant, UR3005, exhibiting very low moisture absorption and high elongation at high temperatures. It has excellent moisture resistance with water pickup of less than 1% during immersion at 60°C. As a medium soft encapsulant, UR3005 induces very little stress on sensitive parts, like printed circuit board level components and associated solder joints. The twopart system gels in 10-20 minutes and full cure is typically reached in 24 hours.

These heavyduty, air-cooled, silenced, single-stage, flood lubricated rotary screw compressor packages are completely wired and plumbed. AUDITING SYSTEM

The AIReport is a sophisticated compressed air auditing system which can simultaneously analyze up to 12 compressors. Logged data will then identify where compressed air savings can be made leading to an optimized compressed air system and reduced energy costs. Up to 12 compressors can be logged simultaneously with the AIReport allowing a professional evaluation of the entire compressor station. AIReport additionally measures the associated equipment such as the compressed air dryer. Data logged can then be graphically viewed including reports on pressure dew point, flow rate, net pressure profile, etc. This data accumulates into a report which highlights the current cost of any system inefficiencies such as idling times, etc.

The SSRC Refrigerated Cycling Compressed Air Dryer is furnished in nine models, ranging from 175 to 1000 scfm. These dryers offer a wide range of operating and performance features to help users reduce energy consumption by matching power consumption to actual operating conditions. The dryer utilizes the reliable and energy-saving scroll compressor, standard on SSRC-400 to SSRC-1000 models.

Other standard features on these dryer models include a unique zero-loss drain integrated into the heat exchanger to collect condensate. As condensate builds, it activates a drain level sensor to evacuate collected material. The drain cycle continually adjusts itself to working conditions. The dryers also feature a high capacity demister separator designed to remove condensed liquids. The demister lowers the air velocity which maximizes the separation of condensate, even when the dryer is not operating on maximum flow.

The entire range has been equipped with new saver cycles on both fan and dryer, increasing the average energy savings. The introduction of the Elektronikon® allows for remote online monitoring through a simple Ethernet connection. The J11HGA-30P single-stage, gas-powered compressor meets high volume requirements while upholding a durable, compact design. The wheeled-portable J11HGA-30P includes a 30-gallon air tank and features a belt driven “J” pump, which is a single-stage, four cylinder pump with a high compression ratio for producing maximum air flow. It delivers 21.3 CFM at 100 PSI or 20.9 CFM at 125 PSI. An 11-horsepower Honda GX gasoline engine powers the compressor and the unit’s special unloading valves and large flywheel allow easy recoil starting.

The W5B-30P two-stage, electric-powered compressor is designed for producing high air flow while meeting the demand of tough jobsites.
