These new Hinge Clamps are ideal for clamping in narrow recesses. This is due to a special linkage that moves the clamping arm forward as it pivots into clamping position, allowing the clamp to exert nearly perfectly vertical clamping force. The clamping arm retracts fully for clear loading from above. Double acting, with a maximum operating pressure of 3600 psi max, the clamp is designed for 500,000 cycles, and contains a swivel contact bolt and reinforced hinge mechanism for added flexibility. Designed for manifold mounting, the clamp is available in more than 100 different variations with clamping forces from 500 to 3200 lbs., with optional position sensing.

Pressurex Zero® pressure-indicating sensor film measures and maps very low contact pressures. It is an easy-to-use flexible film that is placed between contacting or mating surfaces to instantly and accurately measure and map pressure magnitude and distribution. Variations in contact surface pressure is immediately visible by the impression made on the film. The spatial resolution of the film is fine enough to expose minute surface defects and other imperfections. The range for Pressurex Zero® is 7.2 – 28 psi. Pressurex® comes in the form of a thin clear plastic sheet (4 or 8 mil), physically similar in appearance to paper. It is available in eight different pressure ranges. When placed between contacting surfaces, it instantaneously and permanently changes colour directly proportional to the actual pressure applied. The precise pressure magnitude is easily determined by comparing colour variation results to a colour correlation chart.

DC GEARMOTORS

The new series of fractional horsepower DC gearmotors features right angle worm gearing. Designed to also function as Von Weise Drop-In Replacements, the VWDIR23 gearmotors are available in 6 standard 90 volt DC input models. With gear ratios from 37:1 to 525:1, corresponding fixed output speeds range from 90 to 3rpm, and output torques from 34 to 250 in-lbs (3.8 to 28.3 N-m). These drop-in replacements for VW23 and VW33 gearmotors feature 1/10 or 1/20 hp (75 or 150 watt) permanent magnet DC motors with replaceable brushes, grease lubrication for long life and all-position mounting, with left, right or dual output shafts with a 100 lb (45.4kg) overhung load rating.

PRESSURE COMPENSATION

It has become important to provide a protected enclosure environment for valuable and crucial electrical and electronic components. In a tightly closed enclosure, pressure differentials can occur during extreme temperature variations, such as day/night operation. When this occurs, the risk of dust and humidity being absorbed into the control panel increases dramatically. The DA084 series has a high degree of protection and has a NEMA 3 (IP45) rating. The easily installed, specially designed pressure compensation plug DA084 permits a controlled change in pressure. The DA084’s material is plastic according to UL94 V-0 and this series comes with an operator’s manual.

Production Manager Bob Smith is responsible for keeping things flowing smoothly on the production floor and meeting day-to-day scheduling demands, which can often include some potentially stress-inducing quick turnarounds and deadlines. However, there was one fairly substantial bump in the road.

FIBER OPTIC CABLE keeps steel fabrication flowing

T

he production of building systems has become increasingly sophisticated and customer driven in recent years, incorporating integrated data communications and dynamic manufacturing systems to meet demands for timely and customized deliveries.

New Millennium Building Systems seeks to not only achieve those standards but also to gain a competitive advantage by continually raising customer expectations to a level that is difficult for rival suppliers to reach. This entails offering the right variety of products and maintaining agility in production processes so that customers know they can depend on quality and scheduled deliveries.

New Millennium, a wholly owned subsidiary of conglomerate Steel Dynamics, Inc. manufactures a range of steel joists, girders, and decking for non-residential construction projects. In 2006 Millennium purchased joist-maker John H. Hancock and decided to renovate and expand the newly acquired operation in order to improve customer service and increase competitive pricing, plus expand product and geographic coverage. Five manufacturing plants now share resources and coordinate efforts to be the most customer-oriented joist company serving North America. ”Our expansion program involved not only construction and renovation, but also system upgrades,” explains Ricky Gillenwater, IT Director at the Salem facility. “We recognized early on that this would depend on advanced capabilities in data communications, which in turn would require the right communications infrastructure — fiber optic cabling throughout all the structures in our complex.”

To accomplish this, Gillenwater’s team contracted with Professional Network Services, Inc. (PNS), a full-service voice and data integration provider. PNS is a specialist in physical layer copper and fiber optic cabling, LANs and WANs, including wireless networking, PBX and other communications systems. ”As part of the renovation project, New Millennium wanted to upgrade its voice and data network,” explains Don Daniel, PNS Area Sales Manager and Executive Project Manager. “That included laying fiber optic on their campus to connect five manufacturing buildings with the main

temporarily installing fiber optic cabling between those buildings and the manufacturing plants. ”That expedited the installation of our networks within the manufacturing sites,” Gillenwater says. “We were able to get our fiber backbones in and connect them with the copper connections to our TLC (Total Logistic Control) based computers and other devices. That way we hit the ground running.”

Daniel saw no problem with the temporary fiber installation. His firm is a reseller of Optical Cable Corporation (OCC), which manufactures a broad line of cables and accessories and has distributors in Quebec and Vancouver. . By using OCC ruggedized fiber optic cable, PNS could easily handle installation stresses as well as environmental and mechanical stresses over time.

The temporary fiber cable installation was easy to relocate to New Millennium’s new headquarters building once construction was completed. Now fiber cable runs from the main office to each of the plants and the satellite office. Each fiber optic branch acts like a main distribution hub in each of the manufacturing facilities. In the main production facility copper wires branch off the hub into different areas where they are connected to workstations and PCs supporting TLC programs. ”Running the fiber out there has given us the ability to report our production real time,” Gillenwater explains. “We also create bundle tags, bar code labels that are generated from the data that is pushed down to those machines from the main office. The network enables us to stay current with our inventory on hand and just gives us a better handle, from the office, on what’s going on in the plant.”

Gillenwater adds that production is now scheduled out in the plant, and everything flows in line from there. Actual production data is reported back to the office. ”We are also pushing data down to the machines,” he says. “We are in the process of sending information to the machines so that they can actually function off that data rather than having to key in the data.”

Gillenwater says that the new fiberbased approach to data communications is having a dramatic effect on business capabilities. He says that not only is production capacity improved, but so is turnaround. And that means a higher level of customer satisfaction.

When using the HT-6100 engine tachometer in combination with an Ono Sokki detector, rpm measurement can be performed on virtually any engine type.

It is used for research and/or production measurement of rpm on gasoline and diesel engines (two and four cycle engines having from one to eight cylinders). The HT-6100 uses a large 5-digit LCD with backlight to display the actual rpm being captured and with a measurement range of 120 to 20,000 rpm. A large array of detectors and detection methods support measurement on various engine types.
