OIL SKIMMERS MEET UNIQUE NEEDS of the automotive industry

A

banaki oil skimmers offer cost-effective ways to solve a variety of issues related to recycling, parts manufacturing and assembly within the automotive industry. Recently, a large automaker required assistance in retrieving over sprayed automotive wax from their wash water system. The automaker was sacrificing time and money at the hands of aging, labourintensive equipment that offered poor removal rates.

The oil skimmers are simple, dependable and effective tools for removing oil, grease, and other hydrocarbons from water. The specially designed pick-up unit for this application uses infrared heaters located in the rear of the skimmer, overhead convex heaters, and heated chutes intended to soften the automotive wax, making it easier to separate from water. The design uses the difference in specific gravity and surface tension between oil and water to pick up wax, oil, grease, and other hydrocarbons as the belt passes through the wash water. The belt travels into the wash water, picking up the wax as it passes through. It then travels through an infrared heater hood and is then scraped of the wax by tandem wiper blades. The wax then tumbles into the wax receptacles.

The hard, abrasive resistant construction of the ceramic wiper blades offers more efficient removal rates than standard wiper blades. According to the automaker, the new custom-designed solution solved a problem that units costing 10 times as much, failed to solve. The end result is that wash water life has been extended by several weeks and spray nozzles are no longer getting plugged by wax.

used oil filters that handles approximately 50,000 used oil filters every day and recovers up to 800,000 gallons of waste oil annually that had an issue effectively skimming oil. The company was first using a sucker vacuum truck to skim oil off the surface. This method proved to be too time consuming, messy and inefficient. Either too much oil remained on the water or too much water was sucked up with the oil when the oil film thinned. To solve the problem, the Abanaki Oil Grabber Model MB was installed. It uses two 8” wide belts and stationary wiper blades to skim the water surface to remove up to 200 gallons of oil per hour. The unit is critical to the recycling process, is virtually maintenancefree, and operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

MIST COLLECTOR REDUCES OILY SMOKE I n a recent case study, Donaldson Torit® Clears the Smoke at United Gear Assembly, published by Donaldson Company, Inc., the company provides an overview of how the installation of a Donaldson Torit® WSO Mist Collector dramatically reduced oily smoke generated from hobbers at the United Gear & Assembly manufacturing facility. Additionally, it reduced maintenance time and cost.

Commenting on WSO’s performance, Tom Huppert, in charge of maintenance at United Gear & Assembly, was quoted as saying: “We mounted a WSO-15 right on our gear hobber and it did the trick. We had tried other collectors. They vibrated too loudly, their filters had to be changed

too often — which added to our cost — or parts and service were not immediately available to us. The Donaldson WSOs have far met our expectation in all levels of performance.”

The WSO Mist Collector provides filter solutions for the three mist categories: water-soluble coolants, straight oil, and the most challenging — oily smoke. The VHT High-Temp replacement duck bill sleeve is designed for the VacuValve® dust collector valve series.
