THERMAL EXPANSION EPOXY

Formulated with a special blend of polymeric and inorganic materials, Master Bond EP30LTE-LO features dimensional stability for bonding, sealing, casting and coating applications in the aerospace, electrical, electronic, chemical, optical and computer industries. This two compound epoxy has a very low thermal expansion coefficient and cures at room temperature with 85% of its maximum strength developed within 48 hours. Faster cures are possible at elevated temperatures. It bonds well to metals, glass, ceramics, wood, vulcanized rubbers and most plastics, and produces bonds with a tensile strength of over 5,000 psi. This electrically insulative system resists thermal cycling and chemicals including water, fuels, and many acids, bases, salts and organic solvents.

The GFS series of ground fault sensors monitors all current-carrying conductors in grounded single and three-phase delta or wye systems. Columbia Machine’s palletizers have standard safety features which include Category 3 Electrical Circuits which include A-B SensaGuard dual circuit safety interlocked door switches and Sick type 4 light curtains in the discharge area. The new machine features Dual Continuous Control™ technology, which allows for a welder to adjust two dials on the control panel for a precise setting of both voltage and current. Welders can adjust the arc for a snappy “digging” arc for root and hot passes on pipe with cellulosic electrodes, or for a soft “buttery” arc for pipe welding with low hydrogen electrodes.

The SAE-300 supplies 300 amps of welding power at 60% duty cycle with a maximum output of 350 amps.

Stanley Proto has added to its line of electronic torque wrenches three new Fixed Ratcheting Head models. The new wrenches accept standard Proto sockets and come in 1/4”, 3/8”, and 1/2” drive versions with torque ranges from 25 in-lb (2.8 Nm) to 250 ft-lb (339 Nm). The wrenches are accurate to within +/-2% of indicated value in both directions. This broad accuracy range extends from 10% to 100% of Full Scale. In addition, ninety-nine “on-board” memory storage locations help improve efficiency when taking multiple torque readings.

The HT-4200 tachometer is small, thin and lightweight with a large easy-to-read LCD display. Measurement setup is as simple as applying a small piece of reflective tape marker or reflective paint to the surface of the object being measured. For operation, simply aim the HT-4200’s red light beam at the reflective marker and an on-target indicator light will flash to let you know when you’re on target. Its light beam has a range of 12 inches, allowing measurements to be taken, both quickly and safe, and with an accuracy of 1 rpm. The non-contact tachometer comes in handy when contact measurement is not possible due to access space restrictions and safety concerns. High rpm can be measured up to 50,000 rpm. The HT-4200 continually displays the updated rpm every second.

Built for torque control and durability, the cordless torque tools are built around the 10.8V and 14.4V high capacity lithium-ion battery platforms. The cordless screwdrivers are suitable for applications where air or electric power is not easily accessible. AC CIRCUIT TESTER

Extech’s CT70 AC Circuit Load Tester quickly inspects and detects circuit and wiring problems, such as poor ground impedance, false grounds, missing ground fault protection, low voltage availability under load, and high ground-to-neutral voltage. In addition, it tests GFCI and EPD circuits. The colour-coded display changes from blue to red, providing a visual alert when a problem is detected. As an AC load tester, the CT70 provides selectable loads of 12, 15 and 20 amps. SCANNING PROBE RETROFIT supercharges CMM data collection rates, allows form analysis

G

E Oil and Gas has transformed the performance of a DEA Global coordinate measuring machine (CMM) with a REVO retrofit scanning probe system from Renishaw, producing higher data collection rates to allow form analysis — a function previously not practical due to the lengthy inspection times required. The retrofit, performed by Renishaw engineers, replaced the previous head, touch trigger probe, DEA controller and PC-DMIS® software with the Renishaw Renscan5™ system, including REVO 5-axis scanning head, UCC2 controller and MODUS™ software.

The retrofit system’s ability to reduce typical inspection times will facilitate collection of the additional data necessary for form analysis. “Our inspection time on a standard impeller reduced by four times with the retrofit,” said Claudio Bartali, Manufacturing Technology Project Leader for GE Oil and Gas. “However, the exciting part will be using the massive amount of measurement data to compare the form of inspected surfaces with the 3D CAD models.”

With a requirement for 100 percent inspection, there is a high demand on the CMMs and programming systems at the GE plant. The DEA Global is used to perform dimensional inspections on

components varying in size and geometry up to 1000 mm diameter.

REVO is a contact scanning probe with two integral measuring axes that can work in a true 5-axis measuring mode when using the three axes of the CMM, allowing a completely different method of checking the impeller dimensions. The top face, for example, is measured with what Renishaw calls a “gasket scan,” a rapid sweep of the top machined face in about two seconds, gathering thousands of points. The previous method involved four touch trigger points and took close to 30 seconds. A best-fit calculation of the scanned data allows the software to plot a plane through all the points, confirming the position of the face and its relation to other surfaces. This large amount of data will be used to calculate if the surface is deformed in any way, and exactly which parts of the face deviate from the ideal CAD model of the component.

GE tested the accuracy of the new system by direct comparison of the touch trigger method and REVO. “The accuracy of measured points was at least as good, but at considerably higher speeds and while gathering so many more points,” said Paolo Trallori, Calibration and Metrology Leader for the plant. “The lightweight REVO head is extremely fast when measuring, with the speed of the machine’s axes movement no longer the limiting factor — the machine is often acting just as a carrier for the REVO,” said Trallori. “In most circumstances this means inspection moves can be 50 or 100 times faster than before. Some moves, like scanning the outside diameter of the impeller, are limited by the machine speed, but in this case REVO still reduces overall inspection time.”

By maintaining constant contact with the surface in one smooth rapid move, rather than moving on and off to take single points, inspection times are reduced

and thousands of data points are gathered with the REVO system. “We will be able to certify the quality of components in terms of form tolerances, as well as simple dimensional tolerances,” said Trallori.

The Renishaw5 system has been integrated fully into GE oil and Gas’ production systems, with the Renishaw MODUS software executing inspection moves generated by a Unigraphics CAD/CAM system. The compatibility of MODUS with DMIS is very important, as the 3D CAD model generated in the original design of the component is used for everything from machining the component to verifying its quality. Each component is tracked throughout the process by its serial number, with a full record of every stage of production. The new system allows GE Oil and Gas to add extra quality data to the record and further improve machining operations.

LabVIEW AND NI PXI HARDWARE measures sound quality in an automotive production line

ci-Mech Technical Services, Milton, ON, designs, builds and integrates instrumentation and automation solutions that satisfy the requirements of fully automated assembly and test cells. Our client supplies engineered seat frames to the North American automotive industry and needed a new test system that could recognize different products and test them against appropriate parameters including sound quality. The parts must meet the highest quality standards and be 100 percent functionally tested before shipping. Our clients have to consider the showroom experience of the customer operating the seat.

Sound Quality Metrics

The core of a powered seat is the DC motor-driven leadscrew, or a direct worm drive. In a dealer’s showroom, the sound a seat makes sets the customer’s initial perception of vehicle quality. Car manufacturers have to get the sound and vibration behavior exactly right in the new car showroom because power seat noises are primarily subjective quality indicators. We make accurate measurements on the seat track in the sound-proof stations using the NI PXI-4462 24-bit dynamic signal acquisition

Noise, vibration and harshness (NVH)

specialist and NI Instruments Alliance Partner Signal X Technologies worked with Sci-Mech and the customer to measure sound quality metrics using LabVIEW and the Sound and Vibration Measurement Suite. Metrics considered include Peak A-weighted SPL, Zwicker Stationary Loudness (Sones), pseudo time varying loudness, key harmonic detection, periodic and nonperiodic impulse indicators, and rpm variation and drift.

A key requirement of the production environment is that metrics offer intuitive explanation of possible defects based on industry-standard formulations. It is notable that the metric set is a hybrid of objective and subjective parameters focused on ensuring a repeatable production process. As a set, the metrics can correlate to subjective human impressions of the sound of the seat track as well as direct indication of specific defects that will fail one or more objective metrics. This approach to noise and vibration performance assessment with Signal X technology ensures only quality seats earn a passing grade.

Functional Testing

The 15-station test line, which includes various platforms and systems, runs on a

single Ethernet network. Because of the high digital channel counts required for a project as complex as the current seat cushion assembly and test line, a desktop PC alone could not support the required number of PCI boards. We chose an NI PXI remote chassis to perform the extensive data acquisition and communicate to the PC-based controller. We also used two NI PSI-6511 industrial digital I/O modules which provide 128 bank-isolated 24 V inputs.

With bank isolation, it was possible to connect the Turck sensors directly to save assembly time, reduce circuit complexity, and decrease cost. Two NI PXI 6512 industrial digital I/O modules for the 128 bank-isolated digital outputs allowed us to connect to the devices directly from the module’s breakout box without putting every signal through an optical isolator. With so many channels, this saved setup time as well as panel space.

To control the servo motors of the system, we used an NI 7340 four-axis motion controller and an NI 7774 four-axis motion control interface to a Rockwell Control Logix 5561 controller. Full driver integration with the NI Measurement & Automation (MAX) system configuration utility offered an intui-

tive graphical user interface (GUI) for setup and troubleshooting.

To assist in the software design phase and reduce overall programming time, we used the LabVIEW State Diagram Toolkit to concurrently visualize program architecture and develop code. With the LabVIEW State Diagram Tookit, it was possible to share machine operation concepts with Sci-Mech management and the client.

We also used the NI Motion Assistant to set up the initial motion profiles. This tool helped save hours of development time and was very useful in the initial setup of our servo motors. It was possible to safely check the acceleration and deceleration ramp profiles and overall velocities of the automotive seat testing system before program implementation.

Sci-Mech with Signal X Technologies used LabVIEW and NI PXI hardware to deliver an advanced production line test system for seat tracks that incorporates sound quality as a part of the functional tests, ensuring the parts meet the highest quality standard with 100 percent testing.

PARTIAL STROKE TESTING

For partial stroke testing of valves without overshoot risk or process interruption, Netherlocks offers the FAITH test system which allows online testing of emergency shutdown (ESD) or high integrity pressure protection system (HIPPS) valves, to reduce degradation and ensure that they operate properly should the need arise. The system integrates into a valve’s static and dynamic couplings, replacing the original coupling and spool piece. During partial stroke testing, FAITH’s mechanical steel blocking pins ensure that the dynamic coupling can only turn to the preset test angle to allow flow to continue through the valve during the test without risking overshoot.

Event Updates

The SOR 1510 is a horizontally mounted, float-operated level switch suitable for plant and OEM application where open or closed contacts are required to signal presence or absence of liquid at a discrete level. The float extension arm moves a magnet which actuates or de-actuates a hermetically sealed reed switch. Actuation/de-actuation can be reversed by rotating the unit 180 degrees. The Manual Check option allows the user to verify switch integrity without removing the 1510 from the vessel or increasing or decreasing liquid levels. The automatic return feature restores the switch to operational states once the test is complete.

When hot weather causes the electronics inside a control cabinet to fail, there is a panic to get the machinery up and running again.
