EXAIR’s new 110 Gallon Chip Trapper™ (patent pending) offers a fast, easy way to clean large coolant sumps. Chip Trapper removes the solids such as chips, swarf and shavings out of used coolants and other liquids. Coolant that used to last only six weeks can now last six months or more. The unit is ideal for use on machines with sumps, parts washers, tanks and other storage containers. The compressed air powered Chip Trapper vacuums the dirty coolant or liquid into the included 110 gallon drum, trapping the solids in a reusable filter bag. With the turn of the flow valve, clean liquid pumps back out. There are no motors or impellers to clog or wear out.

Abanaki’s PetroXtractor® belt skimmer is designed for groundwater remediation via existing monitoring wells or remediation wells at depths up to 100 feet regardless of fluctuating water levels.

Hydrocarbon-attracting belts are specifically designed for each type of contaminant: diesel, fuel, gasoline, LNAPLs, DNAPLs and heavy weathered oils. The PetroXtractor removes up to 12 gph of oil from water and can be installed in well casings as small as 2 inches inside diameter. It elevates skimmed oil 100 feet or more for discharge into a user-supplied 55-gallon drum.

INJECTION MOULDING TOOL

Mold-Align® is a new tool that helps improve yields and reduce defects in the injection moulding process. When placed between mould halves, it instantaneously changes colour to reveal how pressure is being distributed between the A & B halves of the mould. The process is quick and simple. Mold Align® is placed between platens on the parting line which is then subjected to pressure upon clamp closing using minimal clamp tonnage. It is then removed and the image inspected for pressure distribution and void spots.

Adjustments if needed can then be made to the platens to achieve alignment, open vents or repair mould damage.

HOIST RING SYSTEM

Carr Lane’s new plate lifting hoist ring system has a load capacity of 10,000 lbs.

The totally removable shackle assembly allows the plate surface to remain totally free of obstructions. The hoist ring’s flat base is permanently installed by cutting a hole in the plate and welding it in place, flush with the surface. The forged alloysteel shackle pivots a full 180 degrees, but does not rotate, and is made to be installed so that the lifting force is applied in the pivoted direction.

In order to permit stepper motor control in a compact, machine-mountable device, Beckhoff Automation has introduced the EP7041 EtherCAT® Motion Box. Using the EP7041 stepper motor box, small EtherCAT motion applications can now be implemented directly in the field without a protective control cabinet. Ideal for harsh environments, the compact EtherCAT module in protection class Ip67 allows the connection of Beckhoff stepper motors up to 50V DC and 5 A. An integrated incremental encoder connection on the EP7041 permits the implementation of a single servo axis with the compact IP67 module. arlock of Canada Ltd., a subsidiary of U.S.-based Garlock Sealing Technologies, has installed a solar heating wall that has reduced natural gas consumption at its Sherbrooke manufacturing plant by more than 20,000 cubic meters a year, as well as reducing release of atmospheric contaminants. The project recently won the EnPro President’s Award of Excellence for Environmental Stewardship, which was presented by Stephen Macadam, president of Garlock’s parent company, EnPro Industries, Inc., Charlotte, N.C. “The architectural integration of this new technology has had a positive impact on both our business and community,” said Christian Laurier, manager of the Sherbrooke plant. “Not only has it dramatically reduced our natural gas consumption, but it has also improved the

A wall-mounted collector preheats outside air that is drawn into the building. Connected to the building’s ventilation system, the solar wall takes in cold air through an opening under the cladding and warms it within the internal air plenum. While energy-efficiency was the prime factor in undertaking this project, innovation, clean energy and sustainability also played into the decision.

“We also wanted to promote leadership in environmental issues by sharing information with other EnPro companies,” explained Laurier. “This project is perfectly adapted to cold climates, and as such it is transferable to other EnPro facilities in northern regions.”

NEW WATERJET DEBURRING/CLEANING/ RUST INHIBITING SYSTEM

W

ith factory floor at a premium and capital equipment funds scarce, Linamar, a Tier One Canadian automotive part supplier, turned to Bertsche Engineering recently for an all-in-one part deburring, final rinse and drying solution.

Typically complex machined automotive parts with multiple intersecting holes require feature-specific part deburring to insure that parts are burr-free. After deburring, parts also need a final cleaning/ washing to insure removal of microscopic particles that might adversely affect performance. They are then preserved with a rust or oxidation inhibitor and dried for shipment (transport) to be assembled.

Usually, this involves separate pieces of equipment linked by conveyors or robots to transport parts to each machine.

To solve the problem of densely filled factory floor space, Bertsche Engineering developed a machine that handles all these processes in one machine, in one deburring cycle. The machine takes oil and chip contaminated parts, previously machined on CNC milling centres and mill/turn machines, then selectively deburrs critical features using high pressure water, blasting chips out of internal cavities, knocking off all feather-edge burrs and fan washing the outside of the part, using a CNC for full cycle control.

This process is accomplished by a series of rotating lance nozzles that probe small diameter internal holes in order to blast feather edge burrs clean at intersection points and wash chips out of deadend passages. External features are then blasted with a series of direct nozzles that release up to 10,000 psi of water at the burr while tracing the part edges. The part is then washed with high-pressure rotating fan nozzles. (Note: When required, additional mechanical wire and filament brush tooled deburring stations can be incorporated into the Bertsche system to mechanically remove burrs.)

The same machine moves the deburred part to an agitated wash and rinse station, where the part is rinsed, cleaned and preserved with an aqueous rust inhibitor (providing up to 24-day protection) and is finally dried. The part is then ready for assembly.
