Our principles About Ascension St. Vincent’s Foundation serves as the gateway to hope and health for Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia’s most vulnerable people. We raise funds and awareness to support the advanced medical treatment offered in Ascension St. Vincent’s healthcare facilities and to help care for individuals and families who are impoverished and underinsured through our community outreach ministries. Our Mission is based on the tradition of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent DePaul who founded us more than a century ago. In that spirit, we provide spiritually centered, holistic care for all people.

Mission Rooted in the loving ministry of Jesus as healer, we commit ourselves to serving all persons, with special attention to those who are poor and vulnerable. Our Catholic health ministry is dedicated to spiritually centered holistic care, which sustains and improves the health of individuals and communities. We are advocates for a compassionate and just society through our actions and our words.

Vision We envision a strong, vibrant Catholic health ministry in the United States which will lead to the transformation of healthcare. We will ensure service that is committed to health and well-being for our communities and that responds to the needs of individuals throughout the life cycle. We will expand the role of laity, in both leadership and sponsorship, to ensure a Catholic health ministry in the future.

Message of gratitude Dear Friends, First and foremost, know that all of us at the Ascension St. Vincent’s Foundation continue to pray for our patients, donors, and community during this public health crisis. In 2020, we experienced a surge in need for the services central to our Mission. The Daughters of Charity gave us our calling in 1916 to commit ourselves to serving all persons, with special attention to those who are poor and vulnerable.

We feel fortified by our history, knowing that the Daughters of Charity cared for this community a century ago when the 1918 Spanish Flu impacted the globe. Today, we are stronger than ever and better positioned to care for those we are blessed to serve.

While this year has been a challenging one, our Tom VanOsdol, President & CEO of Ascension Florida & Gulf Coast Mission has called us to reinvent healthcare delivery with Virginia and Mac at Red Rose Ball and healthcare philanthropy. We want to thank each of you for joining us on this journey as we find new and different ways to care for you and this community.

One key example of a way we’ve been able to rise to today’s healthcare crisis is the establishment of our new Mission PLUS(+) Fund. We launched this new fund to keep our outreach ministries thriving and to provide additional support for our caregivers. Thanks to you, the new Mission PLUS(+) Fund generated more than $223,000 in gifts that helped our important work continue.

Community Outreach Stories In gratitude for supporters who equip our programs to serve the community

The Mitchell* Family is caring for their newborn with support from Brighter Beginnings. The program meets monthly with a goal of reducing infant mortality through education about infant safety, breastfeeding, CPR, and more. When Mr. Mitchell lost his job, the young family was also very grateful to receive food, clothing, and diapers for the children. During the pandemic, the staff set up a monthly drive-thru to provide education and essential supplies for families like the Mitchells.

We received a call from Louise*, a leader of one of our Faith Community Nursing partners. One of her seniors, Mrs. Miller*, had recently been taken to the emergency room and was diagnosed as malnourished. Right away, our Faith Community Nursing Manager coordinated a monthly drive-thru food offering – utilized by Mrs. Miller and 35 other seniors. Mrs. Miller is doing much better and is grateful for this resource that keeps her healthy.

George*, one of our hospitalized patients, needed both home oxygen and transportation assistance upon discharge, but he did not have the financial means to arrange it or nearby family to assist. However, with help from the Good Samaritan Fund, George was safely transported home with all the medication and oxygen he needed to continue to heal and recover.

Our Mobile Health Outreach Ministry had the privilege of caring for Charlotte*, a 35-year-old woman who resides in a safe house facilitated by Her Song. Charlotte was referred to Mobile Health for migraines, insomnia, and Hepatitis C. She received primary care visits and laboratory testing from Mobile Health, and a GI specialist evaluation through our partner, WeCare. Charlotte was given medication and now has no evidence of Hepatitis C. She has made a full recovery, is now employed, and is on her way to regaining her health and independence. *All patient names and pictures were changed for privacy.

On October 24, 2019, the Florida Hospital Association presented us with two awards for our Medical Mission at Home: the Community Benefit Achievement Award and an Innovation of the Year in Patient Care Award. This program provides the underserved in our community with free basic medical care and connects participants with a medical home.

Capital Improvements Stories In gratitude for supporters who ensure our healthcare heroes have the best possible settings in which to provide care

CARDIOLOGY: The Delores Barr Weaver Heart and Vascular Pavilion opened on May 1, 2020 – just ahead of the COVID-19 surge in our region. Our pavilion has served as a critical part of our pandemic response in addition to its fulfilling its primary mission of caring for our most critically ill heart patients. Our cardiologists recently performed their 400th Watchman procedure, in which a device is implanted into the heart to prevent blood clots from forming and causing a stroke. Our cardiologists have also performed 280 AFib ablation procedures which treat irregular heart rhythms. Thank you to the more than 300 donors who made this pavilion – and the care provided within its walls – possible.

FAMILY BIRTH PLACE: Carlee* was born on January 7, 2020. She was immediately admitted to our NICU with pulmonary hypertension. Eleven days later, Carlee was safely discharged home. Her parents were so grateful that they could remain by Carlee’s bedside throughout her stay. The Foundation’s purchase of comfortable NICU furniture enabled this family to be together. *Patient name and photo changed for privacy.

UPCOMING: Since 2004, our Mobile Health Outreach Ministry has provided free care in St. Johns County.

After discovering that more than half of patients in St. Johns County requiring hospital admission leave the county, we made the informed decision to build Ascension St. Vincent’s St. Johns County. This 147-million-dollar facility is expected to open in 2022 with 56 beds and will provide 600 new jobs. We are thrilled to expand our care.

Medical Technology Stories In gratitude for supporters who allow us to provide tailored treatment options for our patients

Early Detection: Sarah* was prenatally diagnosed with a fetal heart defect in which the right side was larger than the left side. Thanks to the Foundation’s purchase of the Neonatal Echo Probe the medical team was well-prepared for Sarah. After being born on February 3, 2020 at just over 6 lbs., Sarah was able to have this critical test the very next day, and be discharged the day after that – with her parents remaining by her side the entire time. Without this essential technology, newly born Sarah would have needed to be transferred out of our hospital just for this test. *Patient name and photo changed for privacy.

Caring Connections: An anonymous donor came to us early in the pandemic, searching for a creative way to help our COVID-19 hospitalized patients feel less isolated.

With this generous donor’s help, we were able to purchase iPads for hospitalized COVID-19 patients that were used to video conference with their families. This kept our patients’ loved ones safe, but allowed for much-needed connection. More than 100 ICU patients were able to virtually visit with their loved ones, thanks to this technology.

Enhanced Screenings: The Foundation works alongside the medical team at Ascension St. Vincent’s to identify new technologies that improve the accuracy of screenings for various diseases, abnormalities, and other conditions. The EonDirect Lung is the industry-leading incidental pulmonary nodule and lung cancer screening software solution, and Ascension St. Vincent’s is the first to have this software in the region. The Welch Allyn® Q-Stress® Cardiac Stress Testing System was also recently purchased to help our Waycross Cardiology group provide top-of-the-line screenings for heart conditions.

Our continued response to COVID-19 Everything we do is motivated by our desire to provide compassionate, personalized, and safe care while also providing our associates with a healthy work environment. Our COVID-19 response is made possible by the hard work and dedication of our leaders, physicians, associates, volunteers, and supporters. We will continue to work together to keep our community healthy and safe.

COVID-19 testing Our Ascension St. Vincent’s team worked around-the-clock during a weekend to open Jacksonville’s very first COVID-19 drive-thru testing site on March 17, 2020. They conducted nearly 13,000 COVID-19 tests. Based on community needs, we have transitioned this testing to our urgent care locations.

Mission PLUS(+) Fund This new fund keeps our outreach ministries thriving and supports our caregivers. Many of our associates had spouses who lost their income during the pandemic. Thanks to donors contributing more than $223,000 to this fund, 421 associates received emergency financial assistance for rent/mortgage payments, utility bills, car payments, and groceries.

Mobile Health Outreach Ministry Thanks in part to Mission PLUS(+) Funds, Mobile Health has continued caring for patients on the go, away from the hospitals.

Even during a pandemic, it is critical to manage chronic conditions.

Our care team kept the community safe in a variety of ways, including implementing universal masking, providing COVID-19 screenings, and administering free flu vaccines.

Recognition for our pandemic response Both the Jacksonville Business Journal and the First Coast Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals recognized us for our continued comprehensive response to the COVID-19 pandemic. We are honored by these recognitions and are blessed to care for this community.

Shircliff Society

Council President: Ty King Established in 2011, the Shircliff Society engages and inspires young professionals to become advocates for a compassionate and just society through volunteerism and philanthropy. The Society is named after Robert T. “Bob” Shircliff (1928-2020) who helped transform Jacksonville with his philanthropy. Shircliff members raised funds for technology at the Family Birth Place.

Twenty years ago, on November 1, 1999, the Daughters of Charity made history when they formed Ascension.

Today, Ascension, is one of the leading non-profit and Catholic health systems in the United States. We honor our historic founders and associates for answering the call to serve our communities, and trust in the hope of healing and renewal in our work, our ministry, and our world.
