Dear friends, As GiveOut enters its third year, we are excited to launch our Partnership Portfolio 2020. At this time of fear and upheaval worldwide, providing sustainable support to the global LGBTQI movement is more important than ever. That is why GiveOut is proud to now be supporting 24 LGBTQI organisations around the world, reflecting the diversity of the global movement in geographic reach, organisation type, focus area, and approach.

Our movement continues to face huge challenges globally, from a rise in populism and hostility, to widespread human rights abuses against LGBTQI people. On top of this, LGBTQI organisations are having to adapt their ways of working and develop new services and approaches to activism in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. During this crisis, our community around the world is relying more than ever on the support - and protection - of LGBTQI organisations.

And these organisations are relying more than ever on the support of our community globally.

While the LGBTQI movement as a whole is woefully under-funded, it is in the Global South and East where organisations face particular challenges in accessing funding. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is also in these regions where health facilities and infrastructure may not be as well resourced, and where our community may face barriers to accessing healthcare.

We know that LGBTQI communities around the world are likely to be affected by the pandemic in particular ways. For example, we are disproportionately impacted by mental ill-health and social isolation, which may be exacerbated in the context of quarantine and restricted movement. And our grant partners are having to adapt in response to the pandemic - creating safe spaces during quarantine, establishing emergency funds, and moving their outreach work online.

Last year, we supported 15 LGBTQI organisations around the world. And this year we are extending our support to nine new grant partners.

We are also strengthening our ties across Eastern Europe and Central Asia through supporting the Creating Opportunities programme with ILGA-Europe, and welcoming our first grant partners in the Czech Republic and Armenia, with Trans*parent and Pink Armenia respectively.

In these unprecedented times, solidarity within our global community is crucial - reaching across regions, time zones and varying life experiences to demonstrate that the LGBTQI community is borderless.

These include the Intersex Human Rights Fund, GiveOut’s first grant partner focusing solely on intersex human rights. And Access Chapter 2, a lesbian-led South African organisation launching an Advocacy Week to bring together LGBTQI activists from across the country.

We continue to support the movement in the Caribbean through a new grant to the Jamaica Forum for Lesbians, All-Sexuals and Gays. And we have expanded our geographic reach in the Middle East and North Africa, with grants to the Arab Foundation for Freedoms and Equality, and the Arabic Media Project with OutRight Action International.

We support the long term, sustainable growth of the movement

We aim to provide long term financial support to the groups we work with. To ensure sustainability, we only support groups that, over the duration of our partnership, show evidence of actively diversifying their funding.

We support activists with resources, not strategies

We provide financial support to enable underresourced groups to carry out their activism. This support is not conditional on the organisation's work following a particular strategy or set of strategies dictated by GiveOut or our donors.

We amplify the voices of those we support

We do not carry out campaigning or advocacy work on behalf of activists, partners, groups, or the movement as a whole. We leave that work to those most familiar with the environments in which they are operating. Through our communications channels we provide opportunities for grant partners to share their work.

We use resources efficiently and transparently

We use our supporters’ donations responsibly, efficiently & effectively, working with transparency, integrity and accountability to ensure that the resources provided to grant partners are used for their intended purposes.

Spotlight: Supporting trans organising globally

The UCTRANS team

Around the world, trans people suffer widespread human rights violations, from discrimination and a lack of legal recognition, to violence and killings.

Even with an increase in funding for LGBTQI groups, trans organisations remain disproportionately underresourced. But despite this, the global trans movement is building momentum, including in the Global South and East. We are proud to support trans organisations worldwide through the Antonia and Andrea Belcher Trans Fund.

Last year saw both global and local trans organisations building the movement and collaborating to amplify their advocacy and activism. For example, in the Caribbean, GiveOut supported the establishment of the United Caribbean Trans Network (UCTRANS). This is the first regional network of trans organisations in the Caribbean, working with local communities and national governments to champion the human rights and healthcare needs of trans people. UCTRANS is working to strengthen the trans movement in the Caribbean, which is currently disconnected, providing mutual support and opportunities to share learning and best practices.

In Eastern Europe, GiveOut provided a grant to the LGBTI Equal Rights Association for Western Balkans & Turkey (ERA) to organise a three-day strategic meeting and training session bringing together trans, non-binary and intersex activists in Tirana, Albania. This resulted in the establishment of a caucus within ERA, which will enable trans, non-binary and intersex organisations in the region to work more closely together. In a climate of hostility and violence, local, regional and international collaboration between trans organisations is essential.

GiveOut has also supported several trans organisations in their community focused work. This includes TransWave, Jamaica’s first non-profit organisation dedicated solely to promoting the health and wellbeing of trans, gender non-conforming, and intersex communities. With GiveOut’s support in 2019, TransWave launched their Trans Emergency Fund to provide assistance to trans and gender non-conforming Jamaicans facing an unforeseen crisis. This is the first fund of its kind in the region, making it a groundbreaking initiative to support the local community.

There are inadequate legal protections to safeguard the human rights of trans people. In India, GiveOut is proud to support The Centre for Law and Policy Research (CLPR), a legal research organisation dedicated to the defence of constitutional values in India. It has worked extensively on the rights of trans people, and is currently working to contest the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019. The trans community have raised several concerns with this new law, particularly in regard to its lack of clarity and unequal treatment of trans people. For example, sexual assault against a trans person carries a sentence of only two years’ imprisonment, whereas for the rest of the population the sentence is up to 10 years.

CLPR therefore plays a fundamental role in ensuring that the human rights and dignity of trans people in India are protected and advanced.

CLPR celebrates Pride in India

Finally, education continues to be an important strategy in seeking to advance trans human rights. Under the Suki Sandhu LGBTQI Asia Fund with GiveOut, we supported Solidarity and Action Against the HIV Infection in India (SAATHII) to launch an activist fellowship programme.

SAATHII supported two trans activists working in rural India to focus on their activism full time. Revathi, one of these fellows, adapted her internationally acclaimed autobiography Vellai Mozhi (‘The Truth About Me’) into a play about the hijra community in India. She performed this across India and also delivered lectures on LGBTQI issues to engage with new communities.

GiveOut will continue to support the essential work of trans organisations in movement building and local activism in 2020.

GiveOut’s Grant Partners 2020

Introducing GiveOut’s Grant Partners Access Chapter 2 Southern Africa, New Grant (E) Access Chapter 2 works to protect and promote the human rights of LGBTQI people, women and girls in South Africa. The organisation seeks to uphold South Africa’s bill of rights, found in Chapter 2 of the country’s Constitution, which guarantees civil, political and socioeconomic rights for all. GiveOut supported Access Chapter 2’s inaugural Advocacy Week, bringing together a new generation of LGBTQI activists from across South Africa for training sessions, workshops, and knowledge sharing to build the regional movement.

Arab Foundation for Freedoms and Equality (AFE), MENA New Grant AFE is a leading LGBTQI organisation in the MENA region working to encourage and support activists campaigning for sexual and bodily rights and gender equality. It supports Human Rights activists in their work by building their capacity, providing needsbased funding, and supporting activists in emergency situations. AFE will use GiveOut’s grant to pay a new Head of Queer Women's Network as it continues to work at the centre of a diverse, expanding, and complex movement.

Arabic Media Project, OutRight Action International MENA, New Grant (A) OutRight Action International is a leading LGBTQI human rights advocacy organisation based in New York, USA. Under its Arab Media Project, OutRight has been monitoring local and national newspapers, radio, TV channels, and social media with partners from the MENA region, and provides training to improve reporting of LGBTQI issues in the media. GiveOut’s grant will support further training of journalists working in the MENA region, and the production of a media training guide to help make coverage of LGBTQI communities in the Arab-speaking world more accurate and fair.

ASEAN SOGIE Caucus (ASC), Southeast Asia Regrant (S) ASC is a network of LGBTQI human rights organisations working across Southeast Asia. In 5 out of 11 countries in Southeast Asia, consensual same-sex sexual relations are criminalised, and LGBTQI people often face violence and discrimination. GiveOut's grant supported ASC's small grants programme to grassroots LGBTQI activists to develop their advocacy capacity, and the production of Lupah Sug, a film about being LGBTQI and Muslim in the Philippines. GiveOut will continue to support ASC’s small grants programme and work with LGBTQI organisations in the face of the COVID-19 crisis.

Centre for Law and Policy Research (CLPR) India, Regrant (T) CLPR is a legal research organisation dedicated to the defence of constitutional values in India, and provides free legal representation to trans communities. GiveOut supported CLPR’s work to provide free legal representation to trans people across India, resulting in a number of legal victories such as the right to change name and gender in educational documents. This year, CLPR will challenge the widely criticised Transgender Persons Act and continue to support trans communities through their Trans Law Cell and Database.

Coalition for Sexual & Bodily Rights in Muslim Societies (CSBR), Asia & MENA Regrant (S) CSBR is a network of groups advocating internationally on behalf of their communities in Muslim societies, encouraging the interaction of faith-based organisations with bodily and sexual rights advocates. It is the only international ‘solidarity network’ of its kind, serving a faithbased demographic and uniting LGBTQI activists in the MENA region. GiveOut’s last grant supported CSBR’s core costs and their ‘Stories of Faith & Sexuality’ programme, with a five-day strategic convening held in May 2019 in Nepal on trans rights. In 2020, GiveOut’s grant will support CSBR’s core costs as they expand their work on healing, wellbeing, mental health, and trauma.

Creating Opportunities, ILGA-Europe Europe, New Grant The Creating Opportunities programme, run by ILGA Europe, supports LGBTQI campaigning activities in Europe and Central Asia. It is both a fund and a hub of resources and expertise, providing strategic support and flexible, responsive funding. The programme supports new organisations, under-represented groups, and individual activists working in hostile environments and situations where it is challenging to gain access to funding.

Campaigns supported in 2018 range from intersex awareness projects in France, Russia and Serbia, to legal gender recognition in the Czech Republic. GiveOut’s grant will support the Creating Opportunities programme to work with LGBTQI organisations in Eastern Europe and Central Asia using its regional expertise.

EQUAL GROUND, Sri Lanka, Regrant (S) EQUAL GROUND works to promote the equal civil, political, economic and socio-cultural rights of the LGBTQI community in Sri Lanka. LGBTQI people in Sri Lanka face discrimination at every level of society, with the Penal Code criminalising same-sex relations for men and women. Last year GiveOut’s grant supported EQUAL GROUND’s core costs, allowing the organisation to organise the largest ever pride event in Columbo, and to implement its ‘Know Your Rights’ campaign to empower LGBTQI Sri Lankans about their legal rights. GiveOut’s grant in 2020 will support EQUAL GROUND as they adapt to the unfolding COVID-19 crisis.

LGBTI Equal Rights Association for Western Balkans & Turkey (ERA) (T) LGBTI ERA is the regional LGBTQI network in the Western Balkans and Turkey, working towards rights and equality. This is a particularly hostile region for trans communities, with 80% of trans people having experienced discrimination or harassment in the past 12 months. In 2019, GiveOut provided a grant to ERA to organise a two-day strategic meeting in Tirana, Albania to connect and empower trans, intersex and nonbinary activists. This resulted in the creation of a trans, intersex, and nonbinary caucus within ERA, which GiveOut's grant will continue to support.

International Trans Fund Regrant ITF is a trans activist and funder-led participatory grant-making fund, aiming to increase the capacity of trans movements to selforganise and advocate for trans people’s rights, self-determination and wellbeing. It provides grants to small, trans-led organisations worldwide working in their local communities to destigmatise and decriminalise transgender identities and bodies. In 2019 GiveOut provided a core grant to the ITF to sustain and amplify its work funding trans activists, with 38 trans organisations supported in its most recent grant cycle. This year, GiveOut will support ITF to further develop its capacity building and outreach work in the Global South and East, creating opportunities for a more diverse range of trans organisations to access funding and support.

The Intersex Human Rights Fund (IHRF), International New Grant Launched in 2015, the IHRF is the first funding vehicle dedicated to resourcing the intersex movement globally. Established by the Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice (Astraea), the IHRF supports intersex activists to address the human rights violations they face and to promote the agency and autonomy of intersex people through providing the resources and capacities needed to realise their rights. GiveOut is supporting the IHRF with a grant towards the their grant-making work in the Global South and East.

IraQueer Iraq, Regrant (A) IraQueer is Iraq's first and leading LGBTQI human rights organisation. Although Iraqi law does not expressly prohibit consensual same-sex sexual activity, the LGBTQI community in Iraq faces discrimination, threats, physical attacks, and killings.

IraQueer sees a lack of visibility and effective advocacy as the main obstacles to LGBTQI acceptance. GiveOut supported IraQueer to hire a communications officer and to continue its knowledge production work. This included a podcast which has so far attracted 6 million listeners. With GiveOut’s continued support, IraQueer plans to introduce a second paid part time member of staff to document stoies and human rights violations of LGBTQI Iraqis to support its advocacy and knowledge production work.

Jamaica Forum for Lesbians, AllSexuals and Gays (J-FLAG) Jamaica, New Grant (A) J-FLAG is the leading human rights and social justice organisation working for LGBTQI people in Jamaica. Although same-sex relations are criminalised in Jamaica, attitudes are changing as a result of the work of J-FLAG and others, with the country celebrating its fourth annual Pride festival last year. However, following a fire at the end of 2018, J-FLAG’s “Rainbow House” office space and LGBTQI community hub was destroyed.

GiveOut’s grant is supporting J-FLAG to re-establish Rainbow House, providing an important space for the LGBTQI community in Jamaica to organise and access support.

Kaleidoscope Trust International, Regrant (A) Based in the UK, the Kaleidoscope Trust works to uphold the human rights of LGBTQI people in Commonwealth countries, two-thirds of which criminalise same-sex relations. They are also a founding member of The Commonwealth Equality Network (TCEN), which supports and connects LGBTQI activists. In April 2018, GiveOut funded TCEN activists Zeleca Julien (Trinidad & Tobago) and Melusi Simelane (eSwatini) to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in London. This resulted in the UK government expressing regret for colonial era laws that criminalise same-sex relations, committing to support decriminalisation, and announcing new funds for LGBTQI human rights. In 2020, GiveOut will continue to support the Kaleidoscope Trust’s work with TCEN.

OutRight Action International, International, Regrant OutRight Action International is a leading international LGBTQI human rights advocacy organisation based in New York. They play a crucial role in the global movement, undertaking research, convening meetings of activists and community leaders, and engaging in advocacy work. Every December, OutRight hosts global LGBTQI activists at the UN in New York for ‘Advocacy Week’. GiveOut's grant is supporting activists to participate in Advocacy Week, enabling them to work with country missions and other activists to engage decision-makers about LGBTQI human rights worldwide.

Pink Armenia Armenia, New Grant (A) Pink (“Public Information and Need of Knowledge”) Armenia, is an advocacy organisation that raises public awareness about sexual and reproductive health, HIV/AIDS and equal rights for LGBTQI people in Armenia. In 2019, ILGA Europe ranked Armenia 47th out of 49 European countries for its protections of LGBTQI rights, just behind Russia. Pink Armenia publishes objective information in Armenian covering sexual orientation, gender identity, sexual health, homophobia and other topics, to raise awareness and promote understanding of LGBTQI issues within the community and among the general public. They also provide training to journalists to improve reporting on LGBTQI issues.

GiveOut’s grant will support Pink Armenia’s core costs as they continue their work to promote understanding and acceptance.

SAATHII India, Regrant (S) SAATHII was originally established to meet the needs of the HIV+ population in India, but has since expanded its focus to support LGBTQI human rights activism. Despite the recent decriminalisation of same-sex relations in India, the situation for LGBTQI people remains challenging. GiveOut supported SAATHII to establish its first LGBTQI activist Fellowship Programme, to empower grassroots activism through arts and culture, sensitisation projects and advocacy. SAATHII was able to support two fellows, both of whom are trans activists working in rural India. In 2020, SAATHII will continue its work with hard-to-reach activists and communities through its Fellowship Programme.

The Other Foundation Southern Africa, Regrant (E) The Other Foundation works to advance equality and freedom in Southern Africa, with a focus on sexual orientation and gender identity. It holds two grant-making rounds annually, with the first allocated to general LGBTQI groups, and the second to lesbian and transgender projects and organisations. GiveOut supported The Other Foundation’s core costs, with the organisation supporting the successful campaign for decriminalisation in Botswana, and holding its largest ever kopano (family gathering) of LGBTQI activists from the region. This year, GiveOut will continue to support The Other Foundation’s work to advance the human rights of LGBTQI people across Southern Africa.

Trans*parent Czech Republic, New Grant (T) Trans*parent is the only group advocating for the rights of trans and gender non-conforming people in the Czech Republic.

Despite the Czech Republic’s apparently progressive stance on LGB human rights, there are no provisions preventing discrimination against the trans community, and forced sterilisation is compulsory for legal gender recognition and for changing gender markers. Trans*parent's primary focus is on changing this discriminatory legislation, and providing support groups and services for local trans communities. GiveOut's grant will support Trans*parent’s core costs and work with trans and gender non-conforming people.

Tonga Leitis Association (TLA) Tonga, Regrant (T) TLA is Tonga’s only organisation focusing on trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming issues and communities, and has been active for almost 30 years. It is part of The Asia Pacific Transgender Network Foundation and a member of The Commonwealth Equality Network (TCEN). GiveOut supported TLA to pay two more staff members, and to take their education programmes on LGBTQI issues to the outer islands. This year, TLA will continue their advocacy and training work, and host a Rainbow Family Convening, the first of its kind in the South Pacific region.

TransWave Jamaica, Regrant (T) TransWave is Jamaica’s first non-profit organisation dedicated solely to promoting the health and wellbeing of trans, gender non-conforming and intersex communities. Its advocacy focuses on legal gender recognition, non-discrimination, and access to affordable gender-affirming and transition-related healthcare.

GiveOut supported TransWave to increase the visibility and acceptance of the trans community through creating engaging online and social media content, mobilising around Jamaica Pride, running a regular support group, and establishing an emergency fund for trans individuals at risk. This year GiveOut's grant will support TransWave to expand their Trans Emergency Fund, hold the third instalment of their Gender Freedom fashion show, and establish a wellness and team-building project.

UCTRANS Caribbean, Regrant (T) Established in 2019, UCTRANS is a network of trans activists and organisations from 10 Caribbean countries. Across the Caribbean, trans people face discrimination and widespread physical and sexual violence. But the trans movement is disconnected, offering few opportunities to share learning and best practices. UCTRANS aims to build the capacity of transgender organisations and those working with trans people regionally to advance human rights, promote sexual and reproductive health, and increase wellbeing.

In 2019, GiveOut provided a grant to support the establishment UCTRANS, allowing members of its board to meet in person for their first strategic meeting. With GiveOut’s continued support, UCTRANS will solidify, strengthen, and focus the network.

UHAI EASHRI East Africa, Regrant UHAI-EASHRI is an activist-led fund for sex workers and sexual and gender minorities, based in East Africa. They provide vital support to the Pan-African movement for equality and dignity through participatory grant-making, capacity building, convening support, advocacy, knowledge building and documentation. In 2019, GiveOut supported UHAI’s core costs to facilitate their continued work of resourcing and enhancing the financial and technical capacity of LGBTQI organisations. UHAI provided almost $1.5m in grants through their grant portfolios. GiveOut will continue to support UHAI’s work, allowing them to remain responsive to ongoing movement needs in the region.

Special Focus Funds The Antonia & Andrea Belcher Trans Fund

The Suki Sandhu LGBTQI Asia Fund

The Antonia & Andrea Belcher Trans Fund has been established to support trans activism globally, and is generously sponsored by trans businesswoman Antonia Belcher and her wife Andrea. Across the world, trans people suffer widespread human rights violations. From discrimination and a lack of legal recognition or status, to violence and killings. Despite growth in LGBTQI funding, trans organisations are deeply under-resourced, with a recent survey finding that more than half of trans groups globally had annual budgets of less than US$10,000 (£7,500). So far, the Fund has supported trans groups in India, the Western Balkans & Turkey, Tonga and the Caribbean.

The Suki Sandhu LGBTQI Asia Fund has been established to support LGBTQI activism in Asia. Across the region, LGBTQI people are facing human rights abuses from discrimination to violence. But LGBTQI activists are campaigning for change and having impact, with recent, uneven victories in the region for trans rights, the decriminalisation of same-sex relations, and marriage equality. The Fund has supported groups building the movement in South East Asia, raising awareness in Muslimmajority countries, campaigning for decriminalisation in Sri Lanka, and working to support the trans community in India.

The Emerald 50 Fund

The GAY TIMES Amplifund

The Emerald 50 Fund has been established to support LGBTQI activism in Southern Africa and is sponsored by Steve Wardlaw and his company Emerald Life, an inclusive insurance provider.

Across Southern Africa, LGBTQI people face human rights violations in law, policy and practice. And in many countries colonial era laws criminalise consensual same-sex relations.

Throughout the region, LBT women in particular face discrimination, harassment and violence. So far grants under the fund have been provided to The Other Foundation, and the Southern African human rights group Access Chapter 2, which is providing advocacy training to LGBTQI activists.

Amplifund has been established in partnership with GAY TIMES to support LGBTQI activists around the world in their campaigning and media work.

The first three organisations supported under the fund were J-FLAG, IraQueer, and the Kaleidoscope Trust. Amplifund is supported by GAY TIMES' corporate partnerships, subscriptions and individual donations.

Through the fund, GAY TIMES and GiveOut aim to bring more diverse voices to the forefront of mainstream LGBTQI media.
