MESSAGE

FROM PRESIDENT & CHIEF

EXECUTIVE OFFICER RAY VARA

Dear Friends,

MOMENTUM. WE’VE WORKED VERY HARD THE PAST FEW YEARS to create it for our organization and I’m proud to report that, thanks in large part to your generosity, Hawai‘i Pacific Health enjoyed a very good year in 2017. Our new brand continues to communicate the clinically-integrated nature of our organization. Our high quality, strong market presence and over 70 locations provide the utmost in convenience for our valued patients.

We achieved several milestones in the past year, significant among them was the opening of West O‘ahu’s first comprehensive cancer center at Pali Momi Medical Center. The 24,000 square foot center provides coordinated cancer care including diagnosis, treatment and support services, in one convenient location for Central and West O‘ahu residents.

Straub Medical Center performs about 2,000 lifesaving heart procedures a year. In addition to highly skilled teams of specialists, our ongoing commitment is to upgrade our cardiac facilities with the latest technology. We continue to raise money for a new Hybrid Suite which will be a combination cardiovascular catheterization lab and surgical procedure room. Once completed in the Spring of 2018, the state-of-the art facility can host both catheter-based procedures and open heart surgeries.

All of these facility and service expansions are designed to further our mission of creating a healthier Hawai‘i. These projects and many more like them would not have been possible without your generous support. As a non-profit addressing the critical health care needs of our communities statewide, we count on each and every one of you and the resources you provide to fulfill our mission. We simply could not do what we do without all of us working together as a team.

At Kapi‘olani Medical Center, the state’s only medical center specializing in the care of women and children, we opened a new state-of-the-art Emergency Department in the Diamond Head Tower. Staffed with a team of board-certified adult and pediatric emergency medicine physicians, the new Emergency Department is twice as large as the old facility with 14,000 square feet of space featuring 24 private treatment rooms, including two trauma rooms and two triage rooms.

Also during the year we unveiled a new simulation lab at Wilcox Medical Center. The new lab is the only training facility of its kind on Kaua‘i featuring hightech manikins to simulate various medical scenarios for training and education purposes. The manikins can exhibit various symptoms and respond to the treatment they are receiving.

So on behalf of the more than 7,000 employees of the Hawai‘i Pacific Health family, including our four medical centers—Kapi‘olani, Pali Momi, Straub and Wilcox—and our clinics and physicians statewide, I’d like to extend a heartfelt thanks for all that you do to support us. Rest assured we will continue to do our best to help people lead healthier, happier lives by providing high quality health care to all.

Sincerely,

Medical-Surgical Nursing Staff at Pali Momi

MESSAGE

FROM SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT DAWN M. DUNBAR

Aloha from

the Foundations

of Hawai‘i Pacific Health,

WHEN WE REFLECT ON WHAT MAKES US ONE-OF-A-KIND , we may think of our DNA, fingerprints and even a signature. These are what set us apart from one another, make us different and special. In this annual report edition of Inspire we are approaching giving the same way—we are recognizing gifts are a personal choice, unique to each individual.

Almost every gift has its own story. Some are based on traumatic experiences with medical emergencies that led to life-saving care at Straub Medical Center. Others are simply a way to say thank you for a routine doctor’s visit at Wilcox Medical Center. We have donors who have contributed for 20 years or more to Kapi‘olani Medical Center who consistently want to capture that feeling of gratitude, no matter how much time has passed.

We even have donations from people who have never used our services or programs. Those include letters stating how in awe the donors are of our medical centers and how they want to ensure the care continues to be there in case they unexpectedly need it at Pali Momi Medical Center. Then there are those who donate based on the patient experience of a family member, friend or neighbor—they heard

how well someone was treated and want us to know our efforts as a not-for-profit organization don’t go unnoticed.

A Mililani man sent a note with every gift for a couple years in a row, each read “Enclosed is a portion of my tax returns. Please put it to good use.” We interpret his message, like many others, that we are trusted to do right by people’s hard-earned savings.

As you read on through this issue of Inspire you’ll hear our donors tell their stories and share why the gifts they make are meaningful to them. We captured quotes and moments in medicine to make it personal. We keep true to our mission of creating a healthier Hawai‘i by listening to what donors, community members, patients and staff tell us.

Someone or some event is always behind every donation that arrives at our desks. The closer we remain to the motivation of donors, the closer we are to our purpose and responsibility. Your inspiration to give means so much.

With appreciation,

MEN’S CANCER CARE

Patient Stan Kum with Dr. Charles Kim at the new Pali Momi Cancer Center.

Dr. Charles Kim is never really satisfied with what many would consider standard practice. He is always challenging himself to find a better path. Dr. Kim has embraced advances in medicine from the very beginning of his career. He started raising the bar right out of medical school.

“When I finished my residency, laparoscopy was just coming out,” Dr. Kim says of the surgical procedure that is performed in the abdomen or pelvis through small incisions with the aid of a small camera. “I was trained in that, but when I started working nobody was doing it in Hawai‘i or knew how to do it. So, I started doing the procedure here.”

During his training to perform this procedure, Dr. Kim was so committed to perfecting his skills that he created a makeshift surgical suite in his garage. He and a fellow physician friend built a manikin of sorts and started practicing mock minimally invasive procedures.

“We got old surgical instruments and then we got a video recorder and we recorded inside the dummy,” Dr. Kim said. “We poked holes in the canvas and then we did the surgery, watching it on an old TV set. We practiced doing prostatectomies and we did it for months.” They’d meet at six in the morning and kept at it for hours.

It was that commitment and dedication to his craft that propelled Dr. Kim to become one of the leading laparoscopic surgeons in Hawai‘i. He says it was also a case of being in the “right place at the right time.” In 2006, he took on robotic surgery by taking classes across the country to become just as proficient in what was the latest minimally invasive surgery technique at the time. Dr. Kim would then assume the role of medical director of robotic surgery at Pali Momi Medical Center, which is how he met Stan Kum.

Even before meeting Dr. Kim, Stan was certain the respected surgeon would be the one to remove a cancerous tumor on his kidney. After his diagnosis,

a trusted doctor referred him. “He called me in and said ‘If you were my grandfather, I would tell you the same thing. I suggest you have surgery and have Dr. Kim take it [the tumor] out. He’s very good.’”

A face-to-face meeting only confirmed Stan’s faith in Dr. Kim’s abilities. Dr. Kim shared a video with Stan to show him step-by-step exactly what the surgery would entail. The 87-year-old has now been cancer free for three years since that robotic surgery, which he describes as “impressive.”

“You can’t even see the scar,” Stan said. “It was only two small incisions, it was like nothing. Usually after surgery there is a pain level you have to go through for a week or two, but with robotics there was no effect. I had no pain. I was surprised.”

Results like Stan’s are part of Dr. Kim’s vision for this program and cancer care at Pali Momi. “We wanted to do high-quality, evidence-based medicine, and we started with oncology,” Dr. Kim said. “The first thing we did was start the robotic program. As a result, our outcomes were very good, and in 2017 we were in the top five percent nationally for the fewest complications.”

Robotics was just the first new technology made available at Pali Momi to male cancer patients in Central

and West O‘ahu. Next was a specialized 3T MRI, which incorporates a technology called multiparametrics that identifies potential cancerous tumors.

Pali Momi also became the first and only program in the state to offer the UroNav Fusion Biopsy System for prostate screening. This advanced UroNav technology combines a pre-biopsy MRI image with an ultrasound biopsy in real time, allowing physicians to target suspicious lesions more precisely and capture accurate tissue samples.

“Using this technique has improved our detection of prostate cancer from 20 percent to about 70 percent,” Dr. Kim said. “So, the number of unnecessary prostate biopsies has decreased.”

Another benefit of this type of testing is that the MRI fusion biopsies are meant to only detect high-grade significant cancer, not the slow-growing indolent type of prostate cancer. This allows doctors to more accurately plan treatment.

Genetic testing is now allowing doctors to detect and categorize prostate cancer even earlier. “We’re kind of on the forefront of that in Hawai‘i,” Dr. Kim said. “We actually did a bit of research on some of the biomarkers and the cost, which actually got published. In our study, we showed that we could save up to a million dollars a year.”

Genomics leads to cost savings in the form of blood tests, 4K and PCA3, that offer better screening to reveal fast- or slow-growing cancers, which helps doctors determine whether cancer treatment is needed or not.

All of these options are just some of the advantages of the new Pali Momi Cancer Center’s comprehensive care for patients. And while Dr. Kim is helping lead the charge in adding more options for detecting and treating cancer, he is confident in this progression because of the multidisciplinary team approach that Pali Momi utilizes.

“It all kind of fits together because of the Cancer Center,” Dr. Kim said. “Usually one patient has to see the urologist, radiologist and oncologist, and he sees everyone separately to get their advice. Often it gets confusing. Our multidisciplinary approach brings all of the medical specialists together as a group to talk about the patient’s best treatment plan.”

Every step forward reminds Dr. Kim how far cancer care has come since his MacGyver-style surgical setup during his humble beginnings in his garage. And after 21 years of practice, he has no plans to stop pushing to improve care and educate patients.

“We have to get the word out on men’s health. A lot of what we are doing now for prostate cancer has been done for years for breast cancer.”

AUDIOLOGY EQUIPMENT

Gifts to Kapi‘olani helped purchase minimally invasive audiology equipment to test infants for hearing impairments in the Rehabilitation Department. Every baby born at Kapi‘olani undergoes this important screening before going home. About two out of every 1,000 babies are born with some degree of hearing loss. Without newborn screening, it is difficult to detect it in the first months and years of a baby's life. Early detection of hearing loss is vital to speech and language development.

PERINATAL

NEWBORN BASSINET

Thanks to community donations, Straub was able to add a new knee positioner for orthopedic operations. The device features a single locking lever that allows surgeons to place patients’ legs into ideal positions, which reduces surgeon fatigue, allows greater access to the area and increases stabilization of the legs during surgery. Contributions to the Straub Bone & Joint Fund went to purchase this important resource.

Donors were behind the delivery of a perinatal newborn bassinet at Wilcox. The bassinet is designed to create a homey environment. The inviting baby bed features a warm wood finish, drawers and a cabinet, while still providing key functional features for care providers. Specialty furniture, such as this bassinet, helps enhance the familycentered environment while creating a calm and caring space.

CORDLESS DRILLS

Mahalo for your support of Pali Momi. Gifts to the Medical Center helped purchase two drills for the surgical team. The cordless design allows for maximum mobility and the lightweight device is ergonomic for comfort control. These new drills will enable Pali Momi surgeons to complete the most challenging sports medicine and orthopedic trauma procedures.

The Greenbaums

Reach Their Goal

“We were absolutely overwhelmed by the giving,” Ken Greenbaum said. In just three months, his family's challenge raised $350,000 for Wilcox Medical Center. The movement began when Ken and his wife, Betsy, donated $60,000 to Wilcox for their 60th wedding anniversary, then challenged others to give as well.

Soon family, friends and neighbors along with community members were adding gifts of their own in support of cancer care. Donations ranged from $10 to nearly $97,000. Ken told another couple who gave a rather large gift, “Your names should be recognized more than ours. They said ‘No, you started it and got us thinking about it.”

Conrad Murashige doesn’t know the Greenbaums but after learning about the challenge, his company was inspired to make a donation of $15,000. Conrad

is the president of Shioi Construction which has been in business on Kaua‘i since 1969. His company has not only worked on projects for Wilcox, many of Shioi's 150 employees depend on the center for their health services. “We have so many employees who go to the hospital, there’s always someone who recently got treated there,” Conrad said.

“Our community is so fortunate that Wilcox provides for continued improvement of equipment, like the blood product irradiator.”

Ken signs the check from Greenbaum Community Challenge. Pictured above: (from left to right) Andrew Bestwick, Dr. Jeffrey Cronk, Betsy and Ken Greenbaum, Dr. Amy Corliss and Dawn M. Dunbar

The first blood product irradiator on Kaua‘i was provided by the Greenbaum Community Challenge. “They saw the need and it was so wonderful to see the donors come together, it went beyond expectations,” Dr. Jeffrey Cronk said. As director of Oncology Services at Wilcox, he understands the instant impact of having irradiated blood products, like red blood cells and platelets, readily available. “Now if we have someone who needs an irradiated blood product because they are bleeding or need emergency surgery, all we do is put the blood in the blood product irradiator and in minutes the blood is ready to transfuse,” Dr. Cronk said. In the past, it could take hours, or even a day, to fly the treated blood from O‘ahu to Kaua‘i.

The reason irradiated blood products are so critical is that it protects individuals with significantly compromised immune systems, including chemotherapy patients and transplant candidates. White blood cells from the donor can attack the systems of people receiving the blood, causing multi-organ failure in those that develop Transfusionassociated graft-versus-host disease. Unfortunately up to 90 percent of these individuals will die of this complication. Irradiation removes the white blood cells. Wilcox needs anywhere from seven to 21 units of irradiated blood product every month for an increasing number of patients, whether it’s Kaua‘i residents or those who frequently vacation on the island. “We care for a number of patients from Stanford, U.C.S.F and across the Mid-West who want to continue their treatment with us when they are on Kaua‘i,” Dr. Cronk said. Wilcox served 5,425 infusion patients— which includes injections, infusions,

transfusions and treatments—in 2017 and nearly half of them were undergoing chemotherapy.

The blood product irradiator is a significant advancement in Wilcox’s plans to provide a comprehensive cancer care program and is a step forward to the goal of a comprehensive cancer center. “The ultimate goal would be to make the journey seamless, from the diagnosis of cancer to treatment of cancer and

patients as an accredited program by the American College of Surgeons and the Commission on Cancer. “It takes a lot of work to get to that level and meet multiple accreditation standards, then prove you are continuing to meet them each year,” Dr. Cronk said.

The Greenbaums agree, they want to see cancer care on Kaua‘i be “self-sustaining.” “If we can just help those with cancer stay closer to home instead of being transported away, it saves time, saves money and saves emotional grief and hardship on a family in crisis,” Ken said.

follow up of cancer,” Dr. Cronk said. Complementary therapies could expand care including nutritional support, art and music therapy, acupuncture, patient education resources like a research library or medical expert speakers and opportunities for clinical trial enrollment. Wilcox has already proven to deliver high-quality care to its cancer

While their family and friends have helped the cause, Ken and Betsy are already thinking about what good their 61st wedding anniversary might inspire. A nice, simple dinner for two is definitely part of their plans in 2018, but Ken says they are also considering leading another small fundraising effort for Wilcox. “I know the hospital has a huge wish list and maybe we can fulfill a small part of it,” he said. The Greenbaums’ marital bliss certainly touches many lives.

Mahalo for your generosity

The people of Kaua‘i can thank the donors of the Greenbaum Community Challenge for funding the island’s first Blood Product Irradiator. This state-of-the-art equipment can produce irradiated blood product in a moment’s notice at Wilcox Medical Center. Ken and Betsy Greenbaum kick-started the campaign in honor of their wedding anniversary. The couple celebrated “60 years of togetherness” by donating $60,000 to the Wilcox Health Foundation. Individuals and businesses joined the Greenbaum Community Challenge to ensure that generations of families on Kaua‘i would have this lifesaving technology. Wilcox Medical Center is humbled by this outpouring of support. Every donation truly made a difference!

A Walking Miracle

Le in front of the lychee tree where his burn accident occurred.

Every year, Marcus Le and his mother enjoy their family tradition of picking lychee in Wahiawa when

it’s in

season.

Last summer was no different, except this time while picking the sweet white fruit, Marcus was electrocuted by a nearby powerline. The electricity ran through his body and knocked him out. With his ankle locked onto the ladder, he hung from 34 feet above the ground. Marcus regained consciousness and came down the ladder. The 40-year-old was then taken by ambulance to the Burn Center at Straub Medical Center

It was at Straub that Marcus learned the extent of his injuries.

“The electric current went through both my hands and exited out of seven places on my body, leaving third-degree burns on my hands, abdomen and legs,” he explained. “Many doctors and nurses helped monitor me around the clock for 48 hours to make sure I was all right.”

The road to recovery would be a long one for Marcus. He spent the next six weeks in the Straub Intensive Care Unit and underwent four surgeries. “When I first arrived in the emergency room, the Straub team was super amazing. They

took such great care of me and kept everything under control, which made me feel at ease and confident that I was in good hands. I can assure the community that the staff will always treat them well.”

chemical burns, as well as severe skin diseases and any condition that requires skin grafting.

Since its inception in 1983, the Burn Center has treated more than 1,000 patients.

“Burn injuries are unique in so many ways,” Dr. Robert Schulz, co-founder and director of the Burn Center, explained. “Within 24 hours, the physiologic changes brought on by the burned skin become potentially lethal. The bacterial barrier and thermoregulation is lost, toxic products from the burn lead to vascular changes that require very large amounts of IV fluid. If not provided, the blood pressure will drop to shock levels and kidney function will be lost. At that point, recovery from the burn injury becomes much more difficult. Before the Straub Burn Center was established, critical burn patients were transferred to the mainland further delaying urgent treatment.”

This year, the Straub Burn Center celebrates 35 years of providing specialized care for burn patients. As the only burn center in Hawai‘i and the Pacific Region, it plays a critical role in serving patients close to home. The team provides advanced burn and wound care for victims of thermal, electrical and

Burn injuries also require a highly coordinated, integrated, multidisciplinary team approach. "After initial resuscitation, the burns have to be washed daily by nurses specifically trained with pain management and burn dressing changes,” Dr. Schulz said. “Physical and occupational therapists work to protect patients from loss of motion and strength. Social workers have to deal with everything from loss of family members to rehabilitation after discharge. Dietary consultation becomes

Marcus still has scars from the treatment on his hands.

extremely important since patients have specific calorie demands. Chaplains and psychologists are also needed to provide emotional support for possible disfigurement and pain.” Every member of the team plays a vital role in the care, recovery and outcome of each patient.

Burns can come in many forms, and the burn spectrum ranges from the easily treatable to the severe. Many people never expect to visit the Burn Center, including Richard Malmgren. Upon returning home one day after work, Richard decided to make stovetop popcorn for him and his wife, Judie. While the oil was heating in the pan, Richard walked away for a moment. When he returned, part of the kitchen was on fire. The oil had sparked and quickly ignited the varnished cabinets above.

“So many things were rushing through my mind. I thought about getting a garden hose and all I knew was I didn’t want the fire to reach the attic, so I grabbed the pan with my hand and threw it outside to remove the fire source.”

Richard’s quick thinking saved the house but left him with severe hot oil burns on his right hand and arm. He called 911, and the next thing he remembers is waking up at the Straub Burn Center.

The burn team opted for surgery and grafted skin from Richard’s thigh to his hand. “There are a lot of things I can joke about now because my hand is not painful today,” Richard says. “Hawai‘i is very fortunate to have this resource. I have a hard time imagining how drastically different my outcome could have

been without Straub. Unless I pointed out my scars to someone, they would be unable to tell I was burned. I simply can’t provide enough praise to the folks at Straub.”

Marcus’ and Richard’s experiences haven’t shaken their optimism, if anything, it’s increased their gratitude. “With every day that goes by, I get stronger and better. That’s why I’m a walking miracle!” Marcus said. “It's been 10 months since the accident and it feels like yesterday. I just feel so blessed to be alive and share my life to impact others around me.”

BURN CENTER FUND

Donations have been key to keeping the Straub Burn Center running. “Much of this quality of care would not have been possible without the generous contributions from organizations like the Honolulu Firefighters Foundation,” Dr. Schulz said. Community donations to the Burn Center have purchased a new burn tub, upgraded facilities, paid for specialized beds and enhanced patient comfort with a multimedia entertainment system. Community contributions are also providing advanced burn life-support classes for first responders, nurses, emergency room physicians and personnel involved in transferring patients to the Burn Center. Gifts allowed the center to expand care from the tub room and offer daily washes with shower gurneys that can be sterilized more efficiently and provide more comfort to patients.

Paying it Forward

As a pediatrician, Dr. Keith Matsumoto knows the value of a long-term investment.

He’s been a staff member for Kapi‘olani Medical Center since 1982 and has watched hundreds of his patients transform from infants who spit up on his shoulder to teens inquiring about healthy habits. That’s why Dr. Matsumoto strongly believes in the role he plays in the growth and development of children. “I chose primary care because of its longitudinal approach to wellness, healthy living, prevention of disease and particularly pediatrics because of the lasting impact when embedding this approach and practice at the earliest ages.”

Dr. Matsumoto’s storied career and long history with Hawai‘i Pacific Health includes being the first pediatrician at the Straub Hawai‘i Kai Clinic, serving as the chair of the Pediatric Department at Kapi‘olani and being a hospital board member for the medical center. In his leadership roles, Dr. Matsumoto said he discovered, “Not only did Kapi‘olani have minimal endowment money but that other children’s hospitals throughout the nation had substantial endowments. Endowments enable funding of many programs or initiatives well beyond what an organization’s finances allow it to do.”

Dr. Matsumoto decided to make an impactful, enduring gift to the medical center by creating the Kapi‘olani Pediatric Endowment Fund. The fund supports the pediatric program and is designed to benefit our community for

generations to come. He urges those who are able to do the same and give lasting support to a program or service that they feel passionate about.

“My appeal to potential donors would be that our keiki are our greatest resource and our future, our legacy,” shares Dr. Matsumoto. “Endowments will enable us to provide the best care for them. I am a strong believer in ‘paying it forward’ and, in my opinion, endowments are the epitome of this concept.”

Support the Pediatric Endowment with a Gift from your IRA Endowments are permanent funds where the initial gift is invested and a portion is distributed to the recipient organization every year. These gifts can be designated in honor of someone or in memory of a loved one. The value of endowments are that they provide both short-term support and long-term stability for the medical center. By creating an endowed fund at one of the medical centers at Hawai‘i Pacific Health, you are investing in the programs and services that can transform care in ways that only the future can tell.

Contact our Planned Giving team at 808-535-7134 to learn how to make a gift from your IRA or create your own endowment. Your donation will have a direct impact on the health of our keiki today and far into the future.

WHEN YOU USE THE IRA CHARITABLE ROLLOVER TO MAKE A GIFT:

Your gift will be put to use today, allowing you to see the difference you are making for Kapi‘olani and the children of Hawai‘i.

You pay no income taxes on the gift. The transfer doesn’t generate taxable income or a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize your tax deductions.

If you have not yet taken your required minimum distribution for the year, your IRA charitable rollover gift can satisfy all or part of that requirement.

Next Stop: Home

Young patients have another reason to smile when they leave Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children. In January, new mini trains began giving discharged keiki rides from their rooms as a celebratory goodbye. The trains are the result of a series of events involving a premature birth, a long friendship and a donor's dying wish. Adding to this train tale, is the long journey taken to make this a reality, from the inspired idea on Maui, to creation in North Carolina and the final destination in Honolulu.

IT BEGAN WHEN Upcountry Maui couple Barry Wurst II and his wife Julia were expecting their first child. Everything was going as planned until, at 32 weeks pregnant, Julia discovered she had preeclampsia.

“I was medevacked to Kapi‘olani the same day I was diagnosed,” she said. “It was a very scary experience. I didn’t know what was going to happen.”

“I had Beatrice a few days later at Kapi‘olani and she was perfect, just really small at 3 ½ pounds. I spent some time in the Intensive Care Unit and Beatrice was in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for five weeks.”

When the healthy baby returned to Maui, the extended family shared details of Beatrice’s early arrival with friends—including Barry’s dad, Barry Wurst I. The senior Barry told his best friend Bob Douglas about the lifesaving care his granddaughter received at the state’s only children’s hospital. Bob decided he wanted to help.

Bob called the Kapi‘olani Health Foundation and said, “I’m inspired to make a gift and it’s going to be something big.”

In meetings to follow, the Kapi‘olani team got to know Bob and understand his desire to donate. Bob was legally blind and made a career of giving to others. One of the projects he started was the Christmas Cheer

Project on Maui in 1994 which gave Christmas trees and food baskets to families in need. The program grew to support Moloka‘i families as well, with as many as 100 trees and baskets donated annually in the final years of the project.

Now Bob wanted to make the road to recovery a memorable one for kids from the moment they started their journey home. “Bob was very detail oriented, and made going home so much more fun and special for our patients,” said Martha Smith, CEO of Kapi‘olani. “The trains have custom Hawai‘i license plates that say ‘Powered by Bob,’ there is a train whistle and with the press of a button, a child’s voice says ‘Next stop home.’ Bob thought of everything!”

The fun design was inspired by a similar train Bob funded for Levine Children’s Hospital in North Carolina a year before. Bob wanted trains for both hospitals, two for Kapi‘olani and another for Levine, to launch on the same day at the same time in

Bob Douglas

both states. That’s exactly what happened on January 3, 2018.

Unfortunately, the 82-year-old was not able to see his dream come true. Bob died of cancer two months before the scheduled launch. His lifelong friends, the Wurst family, represented him at the unveiling at Kapi‘olani and 2-year-old Beatrice was the train’s first passenger.

“To see my daughter filled with joy in the train as she was going down the hallway and to think she is the first of countless children who are going to be doing this is touching,” Barry Wurst II said. “This is exactly what Bob wanted.”

For Barry, Julia and Beatrice, returning to Kapi‘olani brought their story full circle. Bob’s trains will also bring closure to many who experience it.

“Bob will always be remembered for this unique gift,” Martha said. “Bob also allowed us to share the aloha spirit with Levine Children’s Hospital. Both of our facilities are focused on helping kids get healthy and these discharge trains set the tone of being on the right track when they leave us.”

Bob also made significant donations to Kapi‘olani to support pediatric oncology and women’s health, primarily ovarian cancer treatment. With all of his gifts, Bob leaves behind quite a legacy at Kapi‘olani and in Hawai‘i.

“It’s amazing that somebody could spend so much of his time giving,” Barry Wurst II said. “It’s very easy in this life to take and with Bob, he wanted so much to give. He took such great satisfaction in it to a really remarkable degree.”

ALL-STAR BROTHERS

Raising three active sons is a joy, and sometimes a scary challenge, for Kaipo and Sara Pavao.

“They are all quite different,” Kaipo said. “Kapono is strong-willed and rambunctious. The middle one, Keoni, he’s much more cautious and conservative. As for Duke, he watches and he goes for it.”

They certainly are full of energy, especially when they start talking about their favorite things. “I dirt bike ride, I play baseball and I like to play outside on my bike with my friends,” Kapono said with a big smile. “And I like popping wheelies on my bike,” Duke added.

Typical boys. But for Kapono and Duke, being typical is an achievement.

The boys were born with a rare blood disorder.

The first signs appeared when the Pavao’s first child, Kapono, was circumcised. They noticed unusual bleeding. It stopped. But as he grew, there were more troubling signs.

“Kapono was about 9 months old, he was in his walker and got a small bruise on his rib cage. The next morning it was huge, all the way up his ribs,” Sara said. “Then a couple weeks later, he had a big swollen cheek and we took him to the doctor again. He had a bruise on the muscle inside his cheek.”

Kapi‘olani patients and brothers, Kapono and Duke Pavao of Lihue, were named the sixth annual National Ace Cares for Kids All-Stars.

Before he turned 1, their son was diagnosed with severe hemophilia A. “I’ll never forget that phone call,” Sara recalled. “My knees got weak. You begin realizing how serious it is.”

Hemophilia prevents the blood from clotting properly. People with it are always at risk for life-threatening bleeding as well as spontaneous bleeding in joints and muscles. Kapono has developed a factor VIII inhibitor—when the body's immune system targets the clotting agent, factor VIII, that medication is trying to replace in the blood. “Children who have hemophilia, especially severe forms like Kapono, have to replace this factor VIII every single day,” Dr. Desiree Medeiros said.

The Pavao family had to adjust to Kapono’s medical condition, from the chance for infections in a port in his chest to keeping up with a fast-moving toddler who would end up black-andblue on his forehead, arms and legs. The Kaua‘i couple started learning quickly what was minor and what was severe. “The bruising depends on where it is (and what it’s from)—taking a step, playing with toys— you get used to it and you’re keeping your eye out for anything significant,” said Kaipo.

Soon they had another baby boy, Keoni, who was born healthy. Their third son, Duke, would come a few years later and would also test positive for severe hemophilia A. This time though, they felt prepared. “When we had Duke, we were able to do the same thing we did for Kapono,”Kaipo said.

For the boys, treatment is a normal part of life. Duke has received factor VIII infusions every morning through an

IV since he was a baby. “Actually, I don’t cry when I get it, only sometimes,” the 5-year-old said. For Kapono, 9, there have been more growing pains from living with the disorder. “It doesn’t worry me as long as I know I took my shot in the morning,” he said. “My doctor and my parents’ main worry is joint bleeds. Joint bleeds hurt, sometimes it like hurts a lot and you can barely move your arm because the blood just kind of stays there.”

The boys have been treated at Kapi‘olani since they were babies at the Hemophilia and Thrombosis Treatment Center of Hawai‘i. Their story resonated with the Ace Hardware Foundation, a dedicated supporter of the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. In fact, they made a special exception to name both brothers the sixth annual National Ace Cares for Kids All-Stars.

“Ace Hardware is really a family company,” Christine Doucet of the Ace Hardware Foundation said. “So when we read Kapono’s story, one of the things that stood out was that he was very brave and he taught his little brother to be brave. That story of family and brotherhood would really speak to the people of our company.”

In January, the Ace Hardware Foundation surprised the boys with their All-Star announcement in front of classmates, teachers, family and friends at Wilcox Elementary. The first ever All-Star brothers will now be introduced to the

Ace family across the state and the nation. Kapono and Duke will also be the faces of the company’s fundraising efforts for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals this year. Last year, Ace Hardware raised $11 million for CMN Hospitals in the United States including Kapi‘olani. Kapono and Duke’s inspirational story will be shared with store owners, staff members and customers at about 5,000 stores around the world.

“To see them grow up and become allstars, and to be great examples of what your life should be like with a chronic illness. It’s inspiring,” Dr. Medeiros said.

It’s a sentiment shared by their parents. “You can be healthy and still be running around with things that don’t affect what you do every day,” Sara said. “It’s good for people to see that. Not everyone who goes to Kapi‘olani is sick. We definitely need their care, but they’re not just sick kids.”

Above: Part of the Ace Cares for Kids Program included a $10,000 donation from Duracell that was made to Kapi’olani Medical Center for Women & Children in honor of Kapono and Duke.

Up and Running

Kapi‘olani Medical Center’s New Emergency Department

“WORKING IN THE NEW EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT has been like a dream for me and for the entire emergency team,” Dr. Paul Eakin said. He certainly has great perspective. Dr. Eakin has been with the Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children for 15 years, and now serves as division head for Pediatric Emergency Medicine. It’s been a significant expansion. The inspiring work space is 14,000 square feet, which is twice as large as before. Its new location in the Diamond Head Tower means the department is right next to the parking garage and has allowed for eight extra rooms, for a total of 24 private rooms. “It is the fruition of

years of effort, planning and hard work. To be able to care for patients in a more private and comfortable environment has been so fulfilling,” Dr. Eakin said.

Kapi‘olani is also seeing an increase in patient visits since the new emergency department opened in December. And patients are experiencing quicker, more convenient access to family-centered care. A new satellite imaging department within the emergency department also means patients won’t have to wait for x-rays. Larger patient rooms also allow for in-room ultrasounds, eliminating the need to move people to the radiology department. All of this means family members can be in their loved one’s room if necessary and more tests are easily available. As the only medical center in the Pacific to hold a Level III pediatric trauma center designation, Kapi‘olani is critical to the health and well-being of our keiki.

A design feature that is both aesthetically pleasing as well as functionally

innovative is transparency doors. “These doors have been a really popular feature, especially for the younger patients who think that it is ‘magic’ as they watch the glass switch from clear to opaque and back,” Dr. Eakin said. “Of course it also offers improved privacy and gives us the option to see a patient in the room clearly with the door closed. Overall, the rooms are fantastic—bigger, all private and there is plenty of entertainment to enjoy on the televisions that the kids and parents appreciate.”

Kapi‘olani’s new emergency department has made an instant impact on patients, pediatric and adult, and the staff, including Dr. Eakin. “Personally, I look forward to working each shift in the ED and I am sure I will do so for years to come.”

Above: Photos of the newly expanded emergency department. Enhancements include transparency doors for patient rooms (upper left) and an upgraded nurses’ station (bottom left) that is central to patient care.

ALASKA AIRLINES $10,000 GIFT

To mark Alaska Airlines’ 10-year anniversary of its first flight to Hawai‘i, the company donated a total of $100,000 to 10 local non-profits. Kapi‘olani was among those to receive $10,000. Alaska Airlines has been a dedicated supporter of Kapi‘olani since 2012. The company has given to Kapi‘olani in various ways including donating airline tickets for the medical center’s biannual gala. Over the past decade, Alaska Airlines has made a difference for many local families, providing nearly $2.7 million in cash and in-kind support to Hawai‘i organizations.

A VISIT FROM KURT SUZUKI

Kurt and Renee Suzuki are dedicated supporters of Kapi‘olani. One of the ways they support the medical center is through their charity event, A Taste of Hawai‘i. The fundraising gala is hosted by Maui boy and MLB All-Star, Kurt Suzuki, in partnership with celebrity chef, Alan Wong. The fourth annual A Taste of Hawai‘i in January was an evening of world-class dining and entertainment. Alan and four other celebrity chefs hosted their own gourmet food stations, each paired with a professional athlete. The Kurt Suzuki Family Foundation uses this event to help raise money and awareness for pediatric cancer treatment at Kapi‘olani. As part of this annual event, the Suzukis always make time to meet with hospitalized keiki, going room to room to deliver autographed souvenirs and inspire the kids to stay strong.

Kurt Suzuki and one of the oncology patients he surprised during a recent visit to Kapi‘olani.

Sex Abuse Treatment Center’s (SATC) Luncheon

IN NOVEMBER Kapi‘olani Medical Center hosted the Sex Abuse Treatment Center’s (SATC) 19th annual It’s Not Your Fault Benefit Luncheon. SATC is the only program of its kind in Hawai‘i, and gifts help sustain vital and comprehensive services for survivors of sexual violence. At the event, guests learned about the RESPECT campaign which promotes a culture of respect and prevention of sexual violence. SATC promotes the campaign message “Know the line. RESPECT the line. Protect the line.” The event raised $76,189 for SATC through donations, table sponsorships and a lucky drawing.

BRA Day at Pali Momi

IN HONOR OF BREAST RECONSTRUCTION AWARENESS DAY in October, Pali Momi Medical Center invited breast cancer survivors for an evening of yoga and special wellness activities that included massages and facials. BRA Day supports women through their fight with breast cancer, which is the most common cancer diagnosed in women in the United States. Breast reconstruction can be one of the steps in the healing process. Unfortunately, one in five women who do not have breast reconstruction did not know about the procedure or that it is typically covered by insurance. The Pali Momi Women’s Center team wants to embrace survivors on their road to recovery and help them learn about available options. Proceeds from this event went to support the Women’s Center Fund for the purchase of patient outreach materials, medical equipment and programs that help provide the highest level of care for women in our community.

Sitting on the other side of care

As a clinical patient experience manager, Crystal Theel is accustomed to walking the halls of Pali Momi Medical Center. But in the summer of 2017, she entered the emergency department as the concerned family member of a patient. Crystal’s father and stepmother, Paula, were vacationing in Hawai‘i, when Paula developed a cough that became progressively worse. A lung and blood cancer survivor, Paula is vulnerable to various illnesses so to be safe, Crystal and her father took Paula to an urgent

care clinic by their home in Kapolei. Paula was given antibiotics and an inhaler, but she continued to deteriorate. The family decided to take her to the Emergency Department at Pali Momi.

The staff immediately took Paula to a triage nurse and then into a room where the ED team diagnosed her with sepsis. “There wasn’t a step missed by the staff,” Crystal recalls, “One of the nurses was an angel. My dad is nonmedical and was very worried, so she interpreted in layman’s terms physician updates, procedures and lab results. We were informed every step of the way, which made us feel safe and cared about.”

Once Paula was stabilized, she was transported to the fourth floor to

While the family’s vacation took an unexpected turn that transformed a scheduled 10-day trip to almost three weeks, Crystal expressed her gratitude saying, “Thank you Pali Momi ED, fourth floor team, all of our amazing physicians and thank you to my Pali Momi ‘ohana for all the prayers, love and most importantly, thank you to everyone for treating us like family.”

PUSHING RESEARCH FORWARD

STRAUB MEDICAL CENTER IS TRAINING FUTURE PHYSICIANS not only how to be great doctors, but to also be strong researchers. Thanks to a donation to the Straub Bone & Joint Center, students at the University of Hawai‘i, John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) have the opportunity to research sports medicine while completing their medical training. This teaching effort is led by Dr. Justin Young, a Straub sports medicine physician. “Research is not our main role, but we do it to help better care for our patients,” Dr. Young said.

Every year, Straub encourages students in the program to submit research to the American Society for Sports Medicine. Those selected have the opportunity to present their findings to a national audience at the American Society for Sports Medicine meeting, and by publishing the research in professional journals.

This year, two JABSOM students were selected. Donated funds to Straub’s Bone & Joint Center are helping to pay for their conference fees, travel and accommodations. One of the students, Leina‘ala Song, will speak about an innovative way to treat tennis elbow. “This research experience will help expand my perspective as a physician because it will provide experience, mentorship, and connections with physicians and students around the nation with the same passion for sports medicine,” Leina‘ala said.“I am so honored and grateful for this opportunity.”

From left to right, Dr. Andrew Nichols, Michele Saruwatari, Dr Jennifer King and Dr. Justin Young at the 2017 American Society for Sports Medicine meeting.

STRAUB DONOR BRUNCH

Noa Yee was the featured speaker at a recent Straub Donor Brunch. Noa is an aspiring physician with a patient story of his own that he remembers every time he treats people. During his senior year at Tufts University, Noa contracted a bacterial infection that eventually sent him into emergency surgery at Straub Medical Center. He underwent eight procedures before completely recovering. Noa credits Straub for saving his life and confirming his desire to be a doctor in Hawai‘i. Hawai‘i Pacific Health helped him get his start in its Summer Student Research Program (SSRP). SSRP is an eightweek program that provides college undergraduates with a unique opportunity for mentorship by physicians as well as a backstage pass to medicine and hands-on experience in clinical research.

Straub relies on donations to help fund programs and services in support of Straub’s mission to create a healthier Hawai‘i. In recognition of one of the most successful fundraising years for Straub, the foundation held a brunch to thank supporters, show them how donations have been used and share the possibilities with continued support.

During Catholic Schools’ Week, the students of St. Catherine Elementary School in Kapa‘a on Kaua‘i recently donated 180 goodie bags to Wilcox Medical Center for hospitalized keiki and their siblings. Teachers provided the bags, and families sent in non-perishable items such as coloring books, crayons, toys, puzzles, stuffed animals and more. The festivities included the school’s annual pet blessing, which Wilcox’s Chief Canine Officer, Rudy, participated in. The pet blessing has become a tradition and the school has blessed animals ranging from a tiny fish to a horse for good wishes!

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

We all hope our loved ones will never have to deal with a medical emergency. But if and when they do, Wilcox Medical Center staff will be prepared. Wilcox recently unveiled a new simulation lab. The lab features high-tech manikins that the nurses, medical team and staff will use to practice procedures they rarely see, such as high-risk births and sepsis, in a realistic and risk-free environment. Wilcox’s location and responsibility as the primary stroke center and trauma center for the island means many critically sick and injured patients come from all over the island seeking care.

The Sim Lab has already proven invaluable for staff education, and ultimately patient care. “We recently trained ICU staff on critical, life-saving equipment we have only used a few times,” said Wilcox nurse educator Joey Stearns. “That refresher was well timed as we had a patient come into the hospital just three days later in need of that very equipment.”

The Wilcox lab features five simulation manikins including a child, a man and a woman known as “Sim Mom” that simulates various birthing complications and includes a newborn manikin. The

“It was truly our pleasure to do this for Wilcox, a medical center that our community is fortunate to have. We know firsthand how dedicated your doctors, nurses and entire staff are to the patients. Our community is blessed to have all of you looking out for us.”

manikins are linked to a state-of-the-art training system that nurse educators can use to make the manikins exhibit various symptoms, conditions and care responses for the most realistic experience possible.

Donations helped create this learning environment that helps medical professionals react seamlessly in emergency situations. “The generosity of donors has been a blessing to Wilcox, making us well-equipped to train staff and improve care for all of our patients here,” Stearns said.

TORCH RELAY

Torch Relay is a unique multi-day event that spans the country. People in different cities walk or run part of the relay to raise money for their local children’s hospital. Marriott’s Residence Inn Maui-Wailea hosted Hawai‘i’s Torch Relay segment that brought together teams, friends and ‘ohana to support Kapi‘olani. One of the biggest cheerleaders was Maui’s own Ashlyn Melcher. Because of a rare case of Hydrops Fetalis, excessive fluid in her body and lungs, Ashlyn was born with a one percent chance of survival. She is now a thriving musician and athlete because of the care she received at Kapi‘olani. The Torch Relay raised more than $19,000 for Kapi‘olani Children’s Miracle Network!

ACE SHOOTOUT

PANDA EXPRESS

Panda Express is a longtime partner and a leader in corporate fundraising for CMN hospitals. The family-owned business continues to break its own records year after year. Hawai‘i’s 38 Panda Express locations raised a record $279,592 for Kapi‘olani CMN last year, becoming the second highest fundraising partner! Panda’s culture of giving back is demonstrated every day as associates ask each customer if they would like to donate to Kapi‘olani through a donation box or change round-up campaign at the register.

MARRIOTT

The 21st annual Ace Shootout brought together sports legends to compete in an exciting day of golf on the Mauna Lani golf course. For the past 21 years, Ace Hardware has been hosting the Ace Shootout and raised more than $20 million for CMN Hospitals nationwide. Additional ways our 23 local Ace Hardware locations give to Kapi‘olani, Hawai‘i’s only CMN Hospital, are through the Ace Bucket Day, round-up campaigns in store, Radiothon and the annual Hawai‘i Ace Hardware retailers’ golf tournament.

Marriott International holds the honorable distinction of being Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals’ longest corporate partner! Hawai‘i Marriott properties have been showing their commitment to Kapi‘olani CMN for years through unique fundraising efforts. This year, Marriott associates and guests collected contributions by hosting large-scale events, doing icon balloon campaigns, donating bungalow rental fees, pool parties, root beer float days, and more. Marriott also participated in Radiothon by volunteering to answer phones and brought in the most pledges from friends and family!

WALMART AND SAM’S CLUB RECORD FINISH

In six weeks Walmart and Sam's Club raised $232,084 in Hawaii. Kapi‘olani partnered with 10 Walmart stores and two Sam’s Clubs in the islands for the fundraiser. Shoppers were asked to give to Kapi‘olani at the register. Employees also hosted food sales, held manager competitions and paid for dress down days. The donation will help purchase a stateof-the-art ultrasound machine that can easily be moved throughout the hospital and used in patient rooms. In addition to the campaign, the Walmart Foundation gifted two ride-on toy cars for Kapi‘olani’s rehabilitation department.

PICTURE PERFECT BANDAGE SELFIES!

Thank you to everyone who proudly sported bandages to support Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children. Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals across the country rely on donations to help provide care no matter a child’s illness or injury. During Children’s Hospitals Week, Kapi‘olani supporters spread this message by wearing a bandage, taking a photo and sharing it on social media. From corporate partners to patients and local celebrities, every selfie was a reminder that Kapi‘olani is Hawai‘i’s only Children’s Miracle Network Hospital!
