Knotted and twisted, cracked by the cold Tramontane wind and the arid summer sun are the barks of the olive trees, and the hands of the farmers who have been taking care of them for centuries. The seasons mark a profound symbiosis.
The landscape is outlined by the wide curves of the olive tree foliage. The thin branches, the small leaves, dotted by the black of the olives in the harvest season.
The cold took with it the rustle of the sorghum brooms in the dusty countryside, to collect olives. The children’s laughter mingled with the red soil on their old shoes. The rhythmic, metallic sound of the sorter machines and the pungent smell of the fi rst oil.
Poi i primi rami nudi. Che sono diventati alberi. E campagne, terreni e territori.
Paesaggio.
Xylella Fastidiosa. Fastidiosa come uno spiritello cattivo, devastante e inafferrabile.
Then the fi rst bare branches. Which became trees. And countryside, lands, territories.
Landscape.
What took away the soul of the olive trees was a bacterium:
Xylella Fastidiosa. Unpleasant as an evil spirit, devastating and elusive.
Out of a heritage of 60 million trees, 21 million have died. 730,000 have been eradicated, because there is no cure.
40% of Apulia’s territory has been affected.
2013. The year when Salento’s long winter began.
The hands and hearts of farmers never stopped taking care of the olive trees like sick children. Young new trees have taken the place of those that are no longer there, and slowly the green of their leaves is coming back to the countryside.
We’re working tirelessly for the new spring’s sprouts.
