Structural systems, below ground

The Queenscliff House is located on a sandy site next to the beach.

Excavation below ground is constrained by the site’s surrounding where an existing house is located next to the site. Thus a piling wall is constructed so that the house next to the site would not collapse or lose its structural strength (not shown due to it being off section).

The overall form of the house is also adjusted so that the structural system below ground would not interfere with the existing storm-water pipe that run through the site area (not shown due to it being off section).

Off-site soil is brought to ease the construction for the footings, as the soil on site would add unwanted variables into the construction.

Strip Footing

Due to the site being on a sandy area, a combination of strip and pad footing is used. The slab foundation is used sparsely since its weakness to cracking that could compromise the structural integrity of the house and is difficult and extensive to repair.

2. Structural Systems, above ground Due to the location of the house that is prone to salt spray, galvanised steel members are the primary component of the load bearing structural system. Thus, extensive additional finish is done to achieve the final timber aged look of the house, hiding the steel members. However, the primary structure does define the final volume of the house.

The in-situ concrete wall does carry the wooden language of the house by using wood casting. Serving both as an architectural element and structural system.

3. Internal (non-load bearing) partitions All the rooms are partitioned in a way so that the users can experience the outdoor view from any room in the house.

North-West direct sunlight is prioritised for the outdoor deck.

Sliding Door

The window facing the courtyard can be lifted to make the space bigger.

The living space on the second level is spacious without partitions.

Most of the internal partitions in the house uses the stud wall.

4. Environmental Protections

The house hides all of its environmental protections to reach the final aged timber finish.

Furthermore, the creation of the courtyard is to create an outdoor space for the client that is protected from the wind coming from and to the sea.

5. Mechanical and electrical systems Similar to the environmental protection, to achieve the clean finish all of the mechanical and electrical system of the house is hidden. All services are put in a room which allows ease of access for maintenance.

Downpipes are hidden within the wall to achieve the clean finish.

Down-light need to be well insulated to prevent thermal leak.

Hydronic Trench is more energy and cost efficient as it does not need to push the hot air into the room as it travels up naturally.

6. Physical Enclosures systems

The physical enclosure expresses the quality of the building. Raw, untreated grade 1 spotted gum timber is used for the facade to get a driftwood look. On the other hand, the interior is done using highly finished timber. The timber finish is carried from the interior to the exterior.
