Oculus allow sunlight to partially penetrate the building during the day.

Layered timber panel creates a smooth interior through the application of ruled surface.

The dark carbonised timber facade wraps around the sides, concealing the interior.

The carbonised timber hides the pattern, encouraging tactile experience, and acts as a celebration of the presence of the bushfire in the continent.

The pavilion is fully made using timber through digital fabrication method. • •

The facade is generated from the reductive fabrication of dark carbonised wood The interior is generated from layering wood that used subtractive fabrication method

The opening allows the landscape to spill into the pavilion.

The platforms are designed to be both for stairs and seats. The shape and height encourage informal use.

Through the use of the dark coloured base, from afar the pavilion looks like it is floating.

The Sylvan from afar. The seemingly simple yet rough and patterned facade ignites curiousity and demands the users to experience it directly.

Several effects are achievable by the pavilion’s light and shadow throughout different period of time.

•

• The entrance where the volume of users is smaller is adjusted accordingly.

Through this side, the landscape is allowed to flow in and the opening encourages users to exit through this side.

The entrance where the volume of users is higher is made bigger.

Through the use of stairs and the manipulation of the entrance height, users are more aware of their presence and movement entering the pavilion.

The pavilion contrasts the shape, texture and the colour of the timber.

The pavilion will be an architecture that plays around with the users’ expectation.

The aim is to design a structure that initiates formal behaviour while encouraging informal behaviour.

During the morning and the late afternoon sunlight will penetrate the pavilion, warming the users inside.

During mid-day sunlight only partially enters the pavilion through the oculus, providing shade for the users during the hot summer day During the afternoon where public speeches will be held, the sunlight will shine on the speaker, acting as a spotlight.
